Right then, that’s all from this game, and this brings an end to the Super Four stage of the 2023 Asia Cup. After nearly three weeks of riveting action, we are down to the final between India and Sri Lanka. A mouthwatering contest awaits us on September 17, with the first ball to be bowled at 3.00 pm IST (9.30 am GMT). As always, you can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh is the Player of the Match for his all-round performance. He says that they wanted to give the youngsters a chance and planned that spin would be useful on this pitch. He adds that he wanted to regain his batting form after a poor Asia Cup and says that as the ball gets older it is easier to hit. He adds that the off spinner was very useful and appreciates Tanzim Hasan Sakib who bowled brilliantly and got important wickets. On the World Cup preparation, he says that the team looks good and is confident that they will be a side to fear.

Time for the presentations…

India’s skipper Rohit Sharma says that the changes were because he wanted to give some game time to the youngsters. He says that Axar’s batting was brilliant and was brilliant out there even after being hit. He credits the opposition bowlers for bowling good lengths and even Gill’s hundred for keeping them in the game. Credits Gill for his game sense and confidence and says that he has clarity for what he has to do out in the middle and that he is there at each practice.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib is up for a chat. He says that the wicket of Rohit Sharma is his debut wicket and it felt like a dream. Adds that he focuses on the line and length He says he prepares for longer spells. He mentions that the last ball the yorker was planned and he backed himself. He also says that he is going home after winning against India and on a positive note.

Earlier in the game, after Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first, Bangladesh were rocked early as they lost both openers inside the first four overs. They were pegged back even more by the Indian seamers and found themselves struggling at 59-4. Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy then got together and forged a solid recovery with a 101-run stand. Shakib’s 80 and Towhid’s 54 allowed Bangladesh to get their innings on track. Towards the end, contributions from Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan helped Bangladesh post a competitive total on the board. For India, Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 3 for 65 from his ten overs.

To be fair to India, they made five changes in their quest to test the bench strength, but they were outplayed by a spirited Bangladesh side. In their pursuit of 266 on a tricky surface, India were off to a shaky start as they lost their in-form skipper Rohit Sharma on the second legal ball of the chase. The move to send debutant Tilak Varma at 3 did not work out, as an error in judgement led to his downfall. Shubman Gill and KL Rahul showed good application against the moving new ball and calmed the nerves in the dressing room. Just when it looked like the two batters had got their eye in, Rahul perished which put India in more trouble. Despite the fall of wickets at the other end, Shubman Gill stood strong and kept the scoreboard ticking from one end. After reaching yet another sublime hundred, he began to up the ante but lost his wicket in the process and took India’s hopes with him. The hopes were reignited when Axar Patel was batting but his departure in the penultimate over, sealed his side’s fate.

Bangladesh halt India’s juggernaut with a stunning victory! Shakib Al Hasan’s men punch above their weight to bow out of the Asia Cup on a high. They get the better of India in Men’s Asia Cup cricket for the first time since 2012. Having finished strongly with the bat, Bangladesh were expected to take the momentum into their bowling effort, and they certainly did. Playing in his maiden ODI game, Tanzim Hasan Sakib accounted for Rohit Sharma in his first over before breaching the defence of Tilak Varma in the following over. What did not help Bangladesh’s cause was that the experienced Mustafizur Rahman lacked rhythm and could not support the debutant from the other end. In the middle phase, it was a trial by spin by Bangladesh, with the spin quartet bowling with excellent control and being rewarded with wickets at regular intervals. At the death, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mustafizur Rahman held their nerves to seal a memorable victory.

Dasun Shanaka is seen giving final instructions in the Sri Lankan huddle before they disperse. They are followed by the two Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Kasun Rajitha has the new ball in hand and will start the proceedings for Sri Lanka. Off we go…

We are moments away from the start of this crucial Super Four clash, but before that, the match officials and the two sets of players will line up for the national anthems. It will be Sri Lanka’s national anthem first, followed by the national anthem of India.

Dasun Shanaka, the captain of Sri Lanka, says that they would have batted first as well. Adds that the wicket looks good and runs on the board are always handy. Shares that the players are in a good state of mind and are eager to compete. Feels that India are a strong team and they will have to play their best cricket to get over the line. Ends by informing that they are going with an unchanged team.

India’s skipper Rohit Sharma informs that they will bat first. Mentions that it is a challenge to play three consecutive days but feels that they are ready for this fixture. Adds that they did a pool session straight after the game for recovery. Shares that it was a good game for them against Pakistan where they did well with both bat and ball. Reckons that today is a new day and it is a fresh start. Also says that the looks different than the last game and does not have any grass. Informs that they are going with 3 spinners with Axar Patel coming in for Shardul Thakur.

Sri Lanka (Unchanged Playing XI) – Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis (WK), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka (C), Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Matheesha Pathirana.

PITCH REPORT – Sanjay Manjrekar is pitchside. He starts by saying that bounce on all venues has been similar. Adds that almost 70% of the wickets have been picked up by pacers. Matthew Hayden joins him and says that this pitch looks different than the previous game. Shares that this surface looks like Colombo of old times. Mentions that the pitch does not have much grass and feels that spin will play a big role. Reckons that the new ball might slide onto the bat.

Regardless of the outcome, fans are in for an exciting match, as both teams are in peak form. We hope the rain stays away, allowing us to witness a full match. It’s India versus Sri Lanka in the Super 4 of the Asia Cup, and it’s about to kick off. Stay tuned for an action-packed encounter!

Sri Lanka has been a formidable side in this tournament, boasting a 13-match winning streak in ODIs and remaining undefeated in the Asia Cup so far. In their previous game, they defeated Bangladesh convincingly, with Sadeera Samarawickrama scoring a brilliant 93 off just 72 balls, helping Sri Lanka reach a competitive total of 257. The bowlers, led by captain Dasun Shanaka, along with spin sensation Maheesh Theekshana and rising star Matheesha Pathirana, picked up 3 wickets each to dismiss Bangladesh for 236 runs. Sri Lanka may have a slight advantage, considering India is playing back-to-back games in two days, potentially affecting player fitness due to limited rest.

India put on a stellar performance in their previous outing against Pakistan, with their top-order batsmen in exceptional form. KL Rahul, returning from injury, made an impressive unbeaten 111, while the ever-reliable Virat Kohli notched up another century with 122 runs. The opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill also put on a remarkable display, adding 123 runs for the first wicket. With batsmen in top form, India aims to continue their winning streak. Kuldeep Yadav was a standout performer, claiming his second 5-wicket haul against Pakistan. The bowling unit, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Hardik Pandya, also impressed with their swinging deliveries. India is clearly performing like the champion team they are and will be determined to secure another win tonight.

Hello everyone joining us today as we prepare for the next chapter of the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup, featuring an exciting clash between India and Sri Lanka live from Colombo, set to start shortly. This match pits the top two teams against each other, with the winner likely securing the top spot and advancing directly to the finals. Both teams have won one game each and currently sit with 2 points apiece, with India leading due to a superior Net Run Rate.

Right then, folks, we are afraid it is bad news for today as rain has played the show spoiler once again for the much-awaited India vs Pakistan clash. Earlier, we saw Babar Azam winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave a fantastic start to the innings as they brought up their respective half-centuries. Shadab Khan dismissed Rohit Sharma after he had smashed the leg spinner all around the ground while Shaheen Afridi dismissed Shubman Gill. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul looked well-settled on the pitch and on the way to build a steady partnership but then came the downpour. We saw the covers being removed and inspections happening for a brief period of time but just as things were looking good, the rain arrived again bringing the end of the game for today. Thanks to a reserve day kept for this clash, we will see play resuming from where it stopped, on 11th September at 3 pm IST (9:30 am GMT), and it will remain a 50-overs contest. Our coverage will start an hour earlier until then goodbye and cheers.

UPDATE 8:42 pm IST (3.12 pm GMT) – More bad news folks. The rain has intensified and though the covers are on the ground, more delay is expected. We hope that it passes soon and we can get to see at least some action further in the match. So, hang tight folks as we get you more updates.

UPDATE 8.32 pm IST (3.02 pm GMT) – Just as the umpires started walking out for the inspection, the ground staff are getting the covers back on. There seems to be a light passing shower but given the hard work the ground staff have put in, the logical decision is to get the covers back on. All we can now do is hang tight. Stick around for more updates.

UPDATE 8.11 pm IST (2.41 pm GMT) – The umpires were out for their inspection a few minutes back and that one particular damp patch is still a concern. The ground staff have brought out a makeshift triple-fan set up mounted on a wheelbarrow sort of thing in order to dry that area as the wait for an official word continues. Stay tuned as we might get some official news soon. There is yet another inspection scheduled for 8.30 pm IST (3 pm GMT).

UPDATE 7.40 pm IST (2.10 pm GMT) – Right then, live visuals from the ground show that the inspection is going on and the umpires are having a discussion with the ground staff as well. There are still some damp patches that are of concern but thankfully, the weather has stayed dry for quite some time now. We shall get some official news soon, stay tuned. A few minutes later, the umpires go off again and have a word with the captains, explaining that there are still areas of concern on the outfield. No official word yet but there might be another inspection later on. And, we do have the time of the next inspection, it’s 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT) as there seems to be one area of particular concern that the umpires want to revisit.

UPDATE 6.53 pm IST (1.23 pm GMT) – The covers are almost completely off and the ground staff continues to work overtime in order to dry the ground. It surely is tough work out there for them, especially given the multiple wet patches. As mentioned earlier, priority will be given to complete the game today itself and the latest a 20-over-a-side contest can begin is 10.36 pm IST (5.06 pm GMT) with the cut-off time being 12 am IST. Also, Rohit Sharma can be seen in an elaborate discussion with the umpires trying to get an assessment of how things will proceed. Stick around as an official inspection seems imminent. Minutes later, we do get an inspection time – 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT).

UPDATE 6.15 pm IST (12.45 pm GMT) – There is a lot of activity going on at the ground as the rain seems to have stopped. The ground staff are working hard to remove the covers and get water off them and then put them back on. There is also a spot on the outfield that seems very damp and a lot of sponges are being used to dry it down. In in few minutes’ time, at 6.22 pm IST (12.52 pm GMT) to be precise we will start to lose overs but if things remain as they are, we might get some play in before the day ends. Stick around for more updates.

UPDATE 5.43 pm IST (12.13 pm GMT) – The latest visuals from the ground show that the covers are still firmly in place and the rain has come down to a light drizzle. There was a bit of delay in covering the whole ground when the rain first came pelting down which means there is water on the ground as well and a few puddles have also formed. Let’s hope for the best. Stay tuned as we bring you the latest news from the ground.

UPDATE 5.13 pm IST (11.43 am GM) – The rain is still around and seems to be exceeding its stay but it is not pelting down at the moment which is a positive time. Also, once we start losing overs, the umpires will still try to finish play if possible. Only when a 20-over-a-side contest is not possible, then the game will be moved to the reserve day and will kick on from the point the last ball is bowled. Stick around for more updates.

UPDATE 4.53 pm IST (11.23 am GMT) – Oh, dear! Where did that come from? The rain comes pelting down and the players rush off the field. The ground staff is quick to bring the covers on but it looks like more of a passing shower. Just a few moments later, the intensity has increased further and it looks like we are in for a bit of a delay. Stay tuned for further updates.

These hearings in the top court had happened years before the 2023 G-20 dinner invite described President Droupadi Murmu as the ‘President of Bharat’ sparking a row over whether the government was planning to drop ‘India’ and keep just ‘Bharat’.

Just as the players were getting ready for the run chase, there was a slight drizzle. The covers were brought on but it looks like they are being taken off which is good news.

Right then, the game is nicely poised at the halfway mark. Nepal have done exceptionally well to reach 230 and will turn up for their bowling effort with momentum behind them. This target is nowhere close to being daunting by India’s standards but loss of early wickets can put them under pressure. Will Rohit Sharma and Co. chase it down and by doing so, secure a place in the Super Four? We will find out when we return for the chase.

Aasif Sheikh is down for a chat. He says that he got the start in the early overs and wanted to bat deep but unfortunately couldn’t get there. Adds that they were looking for a score of around 250 but will take 230. mentions that they are looking to play good cricket at this level and says that the ball is doing a bit from a length so will look to hit that length. Ends by applauding the Nepali crowd that has come in huge numbers.

Playing in their first international game against India, Nepal did not get overawed by the occasion and looked confident right from the start. The two Nepal openers showed good intent and did not shy away from playing their shots. They made sure to make India pay for those dropped catches, with Kushal Bhurtel being the aggressor among the two batters in the opening stand. Once the opening stand was broken, Nepal did seem to lose their way in the middle overs, but Aasif Sheikh stood firm at the other end and brought up his fifty. At 144-6, Sompal Kami and Dipendra Singh Airee got together and put the innings back on track with a 50-run stand. When these two were batting, it looked like Nepal would cross 250 but the departure of Kami meant Nepal had to settle for 230.

Nepal lost their last 3 wickets for 2 runs and have been rolled over for 230! They fail to bat their full quota of 50 overs, but you’ve got to stand up and applaud what has been an admirable effort from the minnows. It has been a frustrating day for India so far but they will be pleased to bowl Nepal out. After Rohit Sharma won the toss and inserted Nepal into bat under favourable bowling conditions, it was far from an ideal start for them. The Indians were pretty lethargic in the field, dropping three catches in the first five overs. Moreover, they were unable to bowl tight lines and lengths consistently, which allowed Nepal to get off to a swift start. As he has done so often, Shardul Thakur helped India break the opening stand to start India’s fightback in the game. Ravindra Jadeja kept it tight from his end and dismantled the Nepali middle order. With Nepal 6 wickets down, it looked like India would run through the Nepal lower order but they were stalled by the partnership between Sompal Kami and Dipendra Singh Airee. That said, they did well not to allow the tail of Nepal to wag.

48.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! TIMBER! Mohammed Siraj finishes things off and picks up his third wicket as well. Full and quick at 142 clicks, sliding into the off pole. Lalit Rajbanshi stays put and looks to drive it away but is beaten all ends up. The ball goes on to castle into the off stump and Rajbanshi departs for a duck and Nepal are bundled out for 230 runs in 48.2 overs.

48.1 overs (1 Run) Good length angling onto middle, Karan KC makes room and dabs it down to third man for a single.

47.6 overs (0 Run) Full and quick outside off, Lalit Rajbanshi leaves it alone.

47.5 overs (0 Run) Fuller one on off stump, Lalit Rajbanshi toe-ends it toward backward point and looks for a single but is sent back and rightly so.

Lalit Rajbanshi is the last man in.

47.4 overs (0 Run) OUT! RUN OUT! A complete lack of communication and Nepal are nine down now. Mohammad Shami takes pace off and bowls it on a shorter length outside off. Sandeep Lamichhane taps it straight to extra cover and looks to scamper through for the single. Karan KC sends him back but its too late. The substitute fielder Axar Patel picks up the ball and throws it to the keeper. Ishan Kishan dislodges the bails and Lamichhane isn’t even in the frame.

47.3 overs (1 Run) Length ball on the stumps, Karan KC tries to back away but is hurried and gets an inside edge past leg stump for a single.

47.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! TAKEN! Well held by Ishan Kishan and Sompal Kami’s fiery knock comes to an end. Mohammad Shami serves this one on a hard length in the channel and gets it to bounce a bit extra. Kami looks to stay back and ride the bounce by guiding it fine but gets an outside edge. Kishan springs to his right and pouches it nicely. Kami is a bit distraught with that dismissal but has done a fine job for his side. IND vs NEP: Match 5: WICKET! Sompal Kami c Ishan Kishan b Mohammad Shami 48 (56b, 1x4, 2x6). NEP 228/8 (47.2 Ov). CRR: 4.82

47.1 overs (1 Run) Full and straight, in the blockhole. Sandeep Lamichhane backs away and hits it down to long on for a single.

46.6 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Sompal Kami is having a ball out there as he ends yet another over with a maximum. Mohammed Siraj persists with the short ball and bowls this one over middle. Kami stays back and drags the pull over the backward square leg fence for a biggie. Moves on to 48 now. IND vs NEP: Match 5: It's a SIX! Sompal Kami hits Mohammed Siraj. NEP 227/7 (47.0 Ov). CRR: 4.83

46.5 overs (0 Run) Good length around off, jagging back in, Sompal Kami covers the line and blocks it out.

46.4 overs (2 Runs) Another top edge that falls safe. A bumper right over middle, Sompal Kami is hurried and gets a top edge right over the keeper’s head. Kuldeep Yadav from third man moves around to his left and the batters get a coup;le of runs more.

46.3 overs (0 Run) Back of a length and around off, Sompal Kami looks to push off the back foot but is beaten on the outside edge.

46.2 overs (2 Runs) Just short! A good short ball at the body, Sompal Kami instinctively takes it on and pulls it aerially toward fine leg. Shreyas Iyer charges in from the deep but the ball lands short and Iyer does well to get his body behind the line. They get a couple of runs.

46.1 overs (1 Run) Good length around off, Sandeep Lamichhane backs away and slashes it away to deep point for a single.

45.6 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Oh, swatted away, amazing shot! Short but not short enough, around the top of middle, Sompal Kami stays back and picks it up before pulling it well over deep mid-wicket for a biggie. IND vs NEP: Match 5: It's a SIX! Sompal Kami hits Hardik Pandya. NEP 216/7 (46.0 Ov). CRR: 4.7

45.5 overs (1 Run) Well short! Banged in very short, Sandeep Lamichhane charges down the track and tries to pull but gets a top edge over short fine leg for a single.

45.4 overs (1 Run) Fullish length on the pads, Sompal Kami gets an inside edge onto the pads as he tries to flick and the ball rolls toward square leg. They pick up a single.

45.3 overs (2 Runs) Does well in the end! Shorter and slower outside off, Sompal Kami goes for the upper cut but gets a thickish edge wide of third man. Shardul Thakur there nearly overruns it but manages to get his left hand out and make the stop. Two runs are taken.

45.2 overs (0 Run) Another slower one, this is floated up full and outside off, Sompal Kami drives it firmly but straight to extra cover.

45.1 overs (0 Run) Banged in short and outside off, Sompal Kami looks to back away and cut but mistimes it to point.
