How Is MI Looking At Their Captaincy Swap Move After Disappointing IPL 2024? | Cricket News

Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) became the first side to be knocked out in the IPL 2024 season. The Mumbai-based franchise entered the competition under a new skipper, Hardik Pandya, and unfortunately, the Indian star all-rounder couldn’t replicate his Gujarat Titans success this year at MI. The star-studded Mumbai side lost their ninth game of the season against Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata on Saturday and are currently reeling at the ninth position on the points table with only four wins in 13 games so far.

The power-packed batting unit didn’t glue up to perform well with the bat in one of the most explosive seasons this year. The top order led by veteran Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan has fired only in bits and pieces, while the middle order comprising Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya looked inconsistent throughout the season.

Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s stellar performances with the ball, the bowling unit has also looked clueless, leaking runs for most of the tournament. The spin department consisting of Piyush Chawla, Mohammad Nabi, and Shreyas Gopal didn’t make a difference either.

This year, MI had a captaincy change that sparked controversy, with Hardik taking over for Rohit. The franchise’s fans did not take it well, even booing the all-rounder in the first few games at the Wankhede Stadium.

The captaincy swap left the team divided and scattered which also affected the dressing room atmosphere. Hence, it led the renowned MI side to their worst-ever IPL season in the tournament’s history.

Well, the franchises are bound to have a bad season once in a while but let’s discuss what has haunted Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2024 season under new skipper Hardik Pandya.

MI’s legacy

Once upon a time in the late 2010s, there was a power-packed Mumbai Indians side that could beat any T20 XI in the world.

The Mumbai-based franchise became one of the strongest sides under skipper Rohit Sharma’s helm and went on to lift the IPL title record five times – 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

Apart from IPL, Mumbai has also clinched the Champions League T20 title twice in 2011 and 2013.

The franchise built its core squad around captain Rohit Sharma which comprised the likes of Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Quinton de Kock and Trent Boult.

But, for the past few years, MI has looked rusty after losing its core group of players since the end of the 2021 IPL season. They have only made the playoffs once (2023) in the last four seasons including the ongoing IPL 2024.

Hardik taking over leadership duties for Rohit

After a couple of below-par seasons from the team, MI owners might have brought in Hardik Pandya for Rohit Sharma as captain keeping the former’s successful campaigns at Gujarat Titans in mind.

In November 2023, MI traded all-rounder Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in an all-cash deal through the trading window. This transaction provided the necessary funds for MI to finalize another all-cash deal with Gujarat Titans (GT) to acquire the services of Hardik Pandya.

This can also be termed as a tactical move by the franchise considering the team’s future and Rohit edging closer to the end of his career.

Even mathematically, Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful captains in the IPL history with 89 wins in 158 games for MI, boosting a win percentage of 56.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya’s stint as Gujarat Titans’ captain has also mesmerized the world as the two-year-old franchise reached the IPL finals in 2022 (champions) and 2023 consecutively.

As GT’s captain, Hardik had won 22 of the 31 matches he played for the Ahmedabad-based side. The star all-rounder boosted a magnificent win percentage of 71 which caught the eyes of MI’s management.

What’s wrong with Hardik’s captaincy in IPL 2024?

MI under Hardik Pandya looked unsettled in their IPL 2024 opener against GT where they failed to complete an easy run chase in Ahmedabad. Except for Jasprit Bumrah (20 wickets) none of the Mumbai star players have been consistent this year.

Even Hardik’s own performances didn’t help this season; having managed only 200 runs with the bat he is yet to score a half-century. While the fast bowler in him has probably delivered 11 wickets in as many innings.

There might be numerous factors for the downfall of Mumbai Indians this season but former IPL star batter AB de Villiers reckons Hardik Pandya’s captaincy style as one of the major reasons for MI’s collapse.

“The captaincy style of Hardik Pandya is quite bravado. It’s ego-driven in a way, chest out,” de Villiers said in a recent video on his YouTube channel. “I don’t think how he walks on the field is always genuine, but he has decided that is his way of captaincy. Almost like MS (Dhoni). Cool, calm, collective, always got your chest out. But when you play with a lot of experienced players, guys who have been around for ages… They don’t buy into that. It worked at GT, where it was a younger team. Sometimes, inexperienced players love to follow that kind of leadership.”

Furthermore, the RCB legend shared his personal experience playing under Graeme Smith in the National team.

“I remember Graeme Smith. He was out there for the team. All I needed to do as a youngster was to follow. Now there’s a Rohit (Sharma), there’s a (Jasprit) Bumrah. They go like, ‘All we need you to be is calm. Give us a bit of input on how to win matches. We don’t need the bravado. I’m not having a go at Hardik. I love watching him play. I love him putting out his chest because I was like that. I believed that as a batter, sometimes you’ve got to fake it to make it,” de Villiers added.

As per a report, the senior MI players have expressed their views to the coaching staff on the way the team is being led and their perspectives on the team’s underwhelming results.

What’s next for MI?

With the top-four spots out of reach, Mumbai Indians will only play for pride in their final league game against Lucknow Super Giants. While there are a lot of learnings and takeaways for the much-important mega-auction ahead of their next season in 2025.

Indian Stars’ Performance In IPL After T20 WC Squad Selection: Rohit’s Form A Concern, Hardik A Positive | Cricket News

The Indian cricket team’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 to be held in the West Indies and the United States was announced on Tuesday, April 30. Since then, all the 15 players selected for India’s squad for the T20 World Cup have played at least one game for their respective franchises in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Here we take a look at how these Indian players have performed since their selection in the T20 World Cup squad.

Rohit Sharma (captain)
Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has registered a string of low scores since the announcement of the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. Mumbai Indians’ star opening batter scored just four runs off five balls against Lucknow Super Giants on the very day the squad was announced. Two days later, Rohit managed 12-ball 11 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede. The right-handed opener was once again dismissed cheaply as he scored four runs against SunRisers Hyderabad in MI’s previous outing on May 6. Overall, Rohit has scored just 19 runs in three matches since the squad announcement.

Yashasvi Jaiswal
Flamboyant left-handed batter Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrated his inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad with a scintillating fifty against SunRisers Hyderabad. Chasing 202, Rajasthan Royals’ dashing opener slammed 67 off 40 balls, laced with seven fours and two sixes. Despite his brilliant half-century, RR lost the game by just one run in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Jaiswal scored just four runs against Delhi Capitals in RR’s previous fixture. Since the squad announcement, the 22-year-old has scored 71 runs in two games.

Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has been in magnificent form in the ongoing Indian Premier League. Opening the batting for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kohli continued his good run after he scored a 27-ball 42 against Gujarat Titans before scoring a 92 against Punjab Kings. But, it also has to be kept in mind that Virat was dropped twice during his stay at the crease. Kohli was also given apt support by Rajat Patidar who scored a half-century to help RCB put 241/7 on the board.

Suryakumar Yadav
India’s swashbuckling batter Suryakumar Yadav has produced some outstanding knocks since the squad announcement for the T20 World Cup. Mumbai Indians’ accomplished batter scored a match-winning hundred against SunRisers Hyderabad in their last game. MI were reduced to 31/3 in 4.1 overs while chasing SRH’s 173/8. Batting at number four, Suryakumar smashed 102 not out off just 51 balls to guide MI to a seven-wicket win at Wankhede. Earlier, the right-handed batter hammered a 35-ball 56 against Kolkata Knight Riders while other MI batters struggled on that night. However, he was dismissed for 10 against Lucknow Super Giants on the day the squad was announced. Overall, Suryakumar has scored 168 runs in three games since the squad announcement.

Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper)
Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has been one of the standout wicketkeeper-batters in IPL 2024. The hard-hitting southpaw has amassed 413 runs in 12 games at an average of 41.30 and a strike rate of 156.43. He has registered three fifties this season. Since India’s T20 World Cup squad announcement, Pant has featured in just one game against Rajasthan Royals in Delhi. Batting at No.5, the southpaw scored 15 off 13 balls against RR before he fell to Yuzvendra Chahal. His cameo guided DC to a massive 221/8, which they later defended and won by 20 runs.

Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper)
Sanju Samson pipped KL Rahul to be included in India’s 15-member T20 World Cup. Following the announcement, Rajasthan Royals’ captain was dismissed for a duck against SunRisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad. However, Samson soon bounced back against Delhi Capitals in RR’s previous outing. Chasing 222, Samson led from the front as he smashed 86 off just 46 balls which kept RR in the hunt. His knock included eight fours and six maximums. Despite Samson’s brilliant knock, RR fell short by 20 runs.

Hardik Pandya
MI captain Hardik Pandya has produced few impressive bowling performances since the squad announcement for the T20 World Cup. On the day the squad was announced, Hardik was dismissed for a golden duck against Lucknow Super Giants. Defending 144, India’s star all-rounder later bagged the important wickets of KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda to finish with figures of 2/26. Hardik then once again claimed two wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders despite conceding 44 runs in his four overs. In the batting department, he continued to struggle as he scored just one run at Wankhede. In their last game, Hardik took three wickets for 31 runs to help MI restrict SRH to 173/8. MI later chased down the target in 17.2 overs courtesy Suryakumar’s ton.

Shivam Dube
Chennai Super Kings’ Shivam Dube has suffered a shocking loss of form since his inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad. The hard-hitting left-hander was dismissed for a duck in the very first ball against Punjab Kings in Chennai before being dismissed for 13-ball 21 against Gujarat in Ahmedabad. On the positive front, Dube dismissed Jonny Bairstow in Chennai to bag his first wicket in IPL 2024, when CSK took on PBKS in Dharamsala.

Ravindra Jadeja
India’s star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has had a mixed bag since the announcement of the 15-member squad for T20 World Cup 2024. The 35-year-old scored just two runs off four deliveries and claimed no wickets against Punjab Kings in Chennai. Later in Dharamsala, Jadeja was adjudged the Player of the Match for his all-round performance against Punjab Kings. Jadeja then scored a 10-ball 18 against Gujarat as CSK ended up on the losing side.

Axar Patel
Another spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel has contributed with both bat and ball in the only game that he has played since the squad announcement. Batting at No.4, Delhi Capitals’ all-rounder Axar scored 15 off 10 balls against Rajasthan Royals to help his side post 221/8 in their 20 overs. Later, Axar dismissed Jos Buttler to finish with figures of 1/25 to guide the Capitals to a 20-run victory in Delhi.

Kuldeep Yadav
Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been one of the standout bowlers in IPL 2024. The 29-year-old has bagged 14 wickets in nine matches at an average of 20.64 and an economy of 8.25. Since India’s T20 World Cup squad announcement, Kuldeep has featured in just one game for Delhi Capitals. Defending 222 against RR, Kuldeep dismissed Donovan Ferreira and Ravichandran Ashwin in the 18th over to power DC to a convincing victory in the end.

Yuzvendra Chahal
Following his inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been expensive in both the games that he has played since the announcement. SunRisers Hyderabad batters smashed Chahal to all parts of the ground as he conceded 62 runs in his four overs in Hyderabad. Later against Delhi Capitals, Chahal took the important wicket of Rishabh Pant. However, the 33-year-old conceded 48 runs in his four overs.

Jasprit Bumrah
Indian cricket team’s bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has continued his good form even after the squad announcement for the T20 World Cup. Bumrah produced an economical spell of none for 17 against Lucknow Super Giants while defending just 144. Against Kolkata Knight Riders, Bumrah was the wrecker-in-chief for MI as he picked up three wickets for 18 runs in his 3.5 overs to bowl them out for 169. India’s right-arm pacer once again bowled an economical spell against an in-form SunRisers Hyderabad’s batting line-up. Bumrah finished with figures of 1/23. He is the current Purple Cap holder in IPL 2024 with 18 wickets in 12 matches.

Mohammed Siraj
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has featured in two games since the announcement of the 15-member squad for T20 World Cup 2024. Playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Siraj bowled an impressive spell against last season’s finalist Gujarat Titans at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on May 4. Siraj finished with figures of 2/29 to help bundle out GT for 147 in 19.3 overs. Siraj then picked up 3 wickets for 43 runs against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala.

Arshdeep Singh
Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has produced a few lacklustre performances since his inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad. While Punjab Kings’ star pacer Arshdeep dismissed Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, he conceded 52 runs in his four overs in Chennai. Later in Dharamsala against the same opponents, Arshdeep was once again expensive as he gave away 42 runs in his four overs. Even against RCB, Arshdeep leaked 41 runs in just 3 overs.

RR vs MI Live Score: Here’s what MI skipper Sanju Samson said at the toss

“We had a slightly different idea about the toss so it’s okay. You know the nature of the tournament, it’s a very long tournament, we had a five day break and we discussed about our plans, it’s about focusing about the system and the process. We have played lots of games here, we know how the wicket behaves. MI are known to come back hard in the tournament so we have to play well. • 18:51 (IST)

RR vs MI Live Score: Pitch report

“There’s been four games (at this venue this season), teams batting first have won twice, teams fielding first have also won twice. Spinners haven’t necessarily dominated over seamers. When you look at the team scores, they have been around 180-190, high, but not too high at the same time. Tonight, we are in the middle as well – boundary sizes square – 67m either side, straight – 76m. This pitch looks very very beautiful, it’s dry, it’s hard and it’s even. Why isn’t there a score over 200? I think one of the reasons is players presently like bounce and there’s not a lot of moisture in this pitch,” said Natalie Germanos and Brian Lara.

  • 18:28 (IST)

RR vs MI Live Score: RR’s strong batting

For RR, Riyan Parag has been the batter of the season. The young Assam batter has reinvented himself and his 318 runs is one of the reasons why RR find themselves at the top of the pecking order. While the batting has revolved around him, skipper Sanju Samson too has produced some fine knocks for the team, aggregating 276 runs so far.

Asked to bat first, SRH posted a mammoth 277 for three, the highest total in IPL history. Travis Head, playing his first IPL game this season, blasted a 24-ball 62, while Abhishek Sharma slammed 63 off 23 to lay the foundation. Heinrich Klassen (80) and Aiden Markram (42) provided the late charge to take the hosts past the 250-mark. In reply, MI were two wicket down at the score of 66 before Tilak Varma (64 off 34) and Naman Dhir (30 off 14) stitched a solid 84-run partnership to give the side a solid hope. However, SRH dictated terms post that and MI were eventually restricted to 246/5. (Scorecard)

This is a big-big wicket for Mumbai Indians. Gerald Coetzee has got the danger man Travis Head. However, Head seems to have already done his job. He departs at the score of 62 off 24 balls. Head wanted to play an upper cut but failed to time his shot properly and handed a catch to Naman Dhir. The fielder came a bit forward while taking the catch at deep backward point.

Mumbai Indians are clearly on the back foot, only because of this man, who is literally butchering their bowlers.

The 77-run partnership between Rohit and Brevis has been broken by Sai Kishore. Rohit wanted to play a sweep shot on it but missed it completely. Mumbai Indians need 72 runs in 54 balls.

    GT vs MI Live: FOUR!

This is what you call experience. Sai Kishore was bowling slower ones to keep Dewald Brevis in check. Gujarat vs Mumbai Live: SIX!

As easy as you like it. A fuller delivery from Umesh Yadav and Rohit Sharma flicked it away for a six to wide of long-on. A lot of dew has arrived and the defence of 168/6 won’t be that easy for Gujarat Titans, especially against a batting like Mumbai Indians’.

IPL 2024 Live Score: Dhir is OUT!

Naman Dhir was having a good debut with the bat but Azmatullah Omarzai has removed him. Dhir slammed the bowler for three fours and a six in the over before losing his wicket to an LBW. GT vs MI Live: SIX!

This was a poor ball from Piyush Chawla and Sai Sudharsan has given it a perfect treatment. He slog-swept it over the backward square leg fielder for a six. Chawla has to be good with his line and length at this point in time as GT are looking to shift gears.

    GT 88/2 (10.1)

  • 20:09 (IST)

Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians LIVE Score: OUT!

Shubman Gill is gone and Gujarat Titans are in some real trouble here in Ahmedabad. A volley with flight and Gill decided to go downtown by jumping out of his crease. But he failed to clear Rohit Sharma at long-on. Gill departs for 31 off 22.

    GT 64/2 (7.4)

  • 20:00 (IST)

IPL 2024 Live: End of powerplay!

It could be seen as a shared powerplay as Gujarat Titans scored 47 runs but lost the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha. Stokes top-scored for the guests with 70 off 88 balls. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin bagged three wickets apiece while there were two each for Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah. In reply, Jaiswal’s impressing knock made sure India remained on top. (Scorecard)

  • 16:44 (IST)

IND vs ENG Live: Stumps on Day 1!

That is Stumps on the first day of the 1st Test between India and England in Hyderabad. The Rohit Sharma-led side will be really happy with the kind of performance. They first bowled England out for 246 and then posted 119/1, thanks to Yahsasvi Jaiswal’s 76 off only 70 balls.

    IND 119/1 (23)

  • 16:41 (IST)

    IND vs ENG Live: FOUR!

A full toss from Rehan Ahmed and Shubman Gill flicked it away for a four to wide of long-on. It was put well in the gap from the right-handed batter. That is also the first boundary from the bat of Gill. More 5 balls remaining in Day1’s play.

    IND 115/1 (22.1)

  • 16:37 (IST)

    IND vs ENG Live: SIX!

That is a superb shot from Yashsavi Jaiswal for a six. He came down the track on the bowling of Rehan Ahmed and slammed the ball over the long-on fence for a big six. India are bossing this game at the moment. They trail England by 136 runs with two overs left in the innings.

    IND 110/1 (21)

  • 16:20 (IST)

IND vs ENG Live: India aim to rebuild!

The duo of Yashsavi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill have added 7 runs off 23 balls for the second wicket so far. Gill is taking his time as he is on 3 off 19 balls.

    IND 87/1 (16)

  • 16:12 (IST)

IND vs ENG Live: England lose all 3 reviews!

With a lot of dare, England used their only remaining review on an LBW call against Shubman Gill and it failed. The ball did hit Gill’s front pad but ball projection showed that it would have went over the stumps. Gill is lucky there and so unlucky are England.

    IND 83/1 (13.2)

  • 16:07 (IST)

    IND vs ENG Live: OUT!

Here is the first breakthrough for England! Rohit Sharma jumps out of his crease to play a big shot but instead lost his wicket. He hit the ball high in the air before Ben Stokes took the catch at around the mid-on region. Rohit departs at the score of 24 off 27 balls.

  • 15:59 (IST)

  • 15:51 (IST)

    IND vs ENG Live: FOUR!

  • 15:28 (IST)

    IND vs ENG Live: FOUR!

Short ball from Tom Hartley and that was pulled away for a four from Yashasvi Jaiswal. He is playing his shots here Jaiswal and that is a good strategy considering an older ball will not be easy to score runs.

  • 15:22 (IST)

IND vs ENG Live: Foakes with a spear!

This is hilarious! Ben Foakes crashed into the stumps and took out all three pegs. He was collecting Pope’s throw and lost his focus. Even the England players are having a laugh about it.

    ENG: 226/8

  • 14:36 (IST)

IND vs ENG Live: Play resumes!

We are back! So, the third and final session begins. England, with Stokes out there in the middle, have a realistic chance of touching 250. However, he needs Wood and Leach to bat deep with him.

  • 14:00 (IST)

IND vs ENG Live: Off-Stump Flattened!

Catches Hartley off guard! He goes for a sweep but Jadeja manages to sneak in with a sharp turner. The ball drifted across from around the stumps and ripped back in from the rough

    ENG: 137/6

  • 13:00 (IST)

IND vs ENG Live: Stokes-Foakes Key!
