Right then, Bangladesh have posted a fighting albeit under-par total on the board but their bowlers will need to be at their absolute best if they are to defend this and upset the hosts. India have a long batting order and with most of the batters in form will fancy themselves to gun this down and maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament. But if Hardik Pandya is unable to take the field and Bangladesh do get early wickets, it could turn out to be quite a contest. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

Ravindra Jadeja is down for a quick chat. He says that the wicket looks very good and there was no turn. Adds that if they play normal cricket, they should get over the line. On his celebration, he says that it was for the fielding coach who gives out the best fielder award after the game and he wants to get his hands on that trophy. Mentions that it looks like a flat wicket and hopes that the batters can get the job done. Also says that when there is no turn for the spinner, you have to bowl wicket-to-wicket and keep the lines tight.

India, on the other hand, will be happy with the way they recovered after that big opening partnership. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah bowled well with the new ball but without any rewards. They suffered a setback when Hardik Pandya got injured just after bowling three balls and Virat Kohli finished the over which got the crowd going. It was once again the magic of Kuldeep Yadav that provided them the crucial breakthrough which was followed up well by Ravindra Jadeja who got two important wickets as well. A scintillating catch from KL Rahul behind the stumps got Siraj his first wicket which put more pressure on the batters and the hosts managed to squeeze in some cheap overs. Then Jadeja produced another stunner to give Bumrah his first wicket. They kept the pressure on with both pacers getting one more wicket each in the death overs while Shardul Thakur who had another off day got one too in the end.

Bangladesh found it a bit hard initially against the Indian pacers but their openers did not throw their wickets away and once their eyes were set started the counter-attack. They targeted Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur and racked up some beautiful boundaries. Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan created a bit of history as they added 93 runs together which is also the highest opening partnership for Bangladesh in ODI World Cups. Tanzid finally showed why he was backed and made a fine fifty but got out just after reaching it. Das lost a couple of partners and then decided to change gears, it worked for him as he brought up his second half-century of the tournament but got out on 66 going for a big one as well. Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hridoy steadied the ship for them after that but the latter struggled throughout and caved under pressure as he made 16 off 35 balls which cost him side a lot of deliveries. Rahim departed after a well-made 38 but the experience of Mahmudullah came in handy as he provided the finishing touches with a decent knock of 46 off just 36 balls and a few lusty blows from Nasum Ahmed and cracking six of the last ball from Shoriful helped them get to a competitive total.

Another good bowling performance from India! They would have hoped to finish even better but will be pleased with the overall effort. Bangladesh will be kicking themselves for not fully capitalising on the start given by their openers and has to settle for 256 runs.

49.6 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Oh, that is some way to finish off the innings! Jasprit Bumrah bangs this one in a bit and pushes it outside off, trying to keep the ball away from the hitting arc. Shoriful Islam backs away and just frees his arms, slapping the ball up and over the cover-point fence for a biggie. Shoriful brings out a cheeky smile and Bangladesh end up with 256/8!

49.5 overs (0 Run) Back of a length and angled into the body, Shoriful Islam gets cramped for room but manages to block it out.

49.4 overs (1 Run) We have gone from cricket to tennis now! Mustafizur Rahman early to back away and Jasprit Bumrah angles in a bumper right at the helmet. Fizz brings out the forehand smash and gets it through extra cover for a single. The 250 is up for Bangladesh!

49.3 overs (1 Run) Full and outside off, in the blockshole once again. Shoriful Islam backs away and pushes it out to mid off for one.

Shoriful Islam comes out to the middle now.

49.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! TIMBER! Jasprit Bumrah with a trademark yorker and he gets the job done. Goes full and straight, at over 140 clicks and gets it right at the base of the middle stump. The ball swerves a bit in the air as Mahmudullah tries desperately to keep it out but the ball hits the toe and smashes into the stumps. End of a fighting knock by Mahmudullah and Bumrah gets his second wicket.

49.1 overs (0 Run) Very full, in the blockhole around off and angling in. Mahmudullah looks to jam it out but gets an inside edge onto the pads. Interestingly, Rohit Sharma has gone for the review for an LBW but the replays clearly show that there was a big inside edge. One taken more in hope more than anything else.

Jasprit Bumrah (9-1-33-1) to bowl the last over. Can he keep Bangladesh under 260? Let’s find out.

48.6 overs (0 Run) Full and on the stumps, Mustafizur Rahman hits it down to long on but stays where he is and Mahmudullah will keep strike for the final over.

48.5 overs (0 Run) Hard length on leg stump, cramping the batter for room. Mustafizur Rahman tries to back away but only manages to force it out to short extra cover.

48.4 overs (1 Run) Very full and wide, executed better by Siraj and Mahmudullah only manages to squeeze it away wide of third man for a single.

48.4 overs (1 Run) Wide! Full and wide outside off, sprayed beyond the tramline and Mahmudullah leaves it alone.

48.3 overs (6 Runs) SIX! What a strike! Mohammed Siraj misses his mark and serves it in the slot and around middle. Mahmudullah holds hi shape well and hoicks it over the long on fence for a biggie.

48.2 overs (0 Run) Eyeing up that leg side once again. Full and outside off, Mahmudullah walks across to slog it away but cue-ends it back to the bowler who makes a half-stop.

48.1 overs (2 Runs) Hard length well outside off, Mahmudullah is early to walk a long way across the off stump and lifts it high toward wide long off. The ball falls safely and Mahmudullah gets back on strike with a brace.

47.6 overs (0 Run) Ends with a bumper as this is bowled over the stumps and angled in. Mustafizur Rahman ducks under it.

47.5 overs (0 Run) Nails the yorker again, at 144.5 clicks and right on the leg peg. Mustafizur Rahman does manage to keep it out toward mid on but that’s top-tier bowling from Bumrah.

47.4 overs (0 Run) Comes from around the wicket and attacks the pads at 145 clicks with a length ball, angling in. Mustafizur Rahman does well to stay back and gets some bat on it.

47.3 overs (1 Run) Gets the yorker in this time, at 141.9 clicks and tailing in from outside off. Mahmudullah digs it out to extra cover for a single.

47.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Excellent placement! On a good length but well outside off, Mahmudullah stays put and lets the ball come on before opening the bat face and guiding it in between backward point and short third for a boundary. Crucial knock thus far from Mahmudullah here.

47.1 overs (0 Run) Slower one, full and outside off, just inside the tramline. Mahmudullah looks to drive but is beaten.

46.6 overs (0 Run) Short ball over the stumps again and getting a bit of oomph off the deck. Mustafizur Rahman stays inside the line and watches it sail through to the keeper.

Mustafizur Rahman walks out to bat now.

46.5 overs (0 Run) OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Mohammed Siraj sticks to his strength and gets his man eventually. Banged in short over middle and leg, with a bit of pace behind it as well. Nasum Ahmed stays deep and makes room, trying to go for the pull but only manages a thin edge through to the keeper and KL Rahul gobbles up the chance with ease.

46.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Finds the gap well! Takes pace off this time and bowls it on a shortish length outside off, Nasum Ahmed backs away and thumps it in between mid off and the cover region for a second boundary in the over.

46.3 overs (0 Run) Banged in shorter this time, over middle and leg and at almost 140 clicks. Nasum Ahmed once again looks to back away and take it on but misses.

46.2 overs (0 Run) Hard length over the leg stump, Nasum Ahmed backs away and looks to heave it over mid-wicket but only connects with thin air.

Slight halt! It seems like Mohammed Siraj has hurt his finger while trying to stop the ball. The physio is in to check on him now. He looks fine to continue..

46.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! That is a cracking shot! Overpitched on the stumps, Nasum Ahmed drills it back with venom and a bit uppishly as well. Mohammed Siraj tries to get two hands on it but the ball flicks the fingers of the left hand and races away down the ground for a boundary.

Mohammed Siraj (8-0-42-1) replaces Jasprit Bumrah.

45.6 overs (1 Run) Bowls the off-cutter now, on a good length and well outside off. Nasum Ahmed reaches out and manages to tap it in front of extra cover for a single.

45.5 overs (1 Run) Pitched up outside off, punched away off the front foot and through covers for a single.

45.4 overs (6 Runs) SIX! BANG! Mahmudullah laying into Shardul Thakur here. Banged into the pitch and over off stump, Mahmudullah gets on top of the bounce and pulls it flat, just over the mid-wicket fence and picks up a maximum. 13 off the over already!

45.3 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Poor delivery from Shardul Thakur as he bowls a half-volley down leg, Mahmudullah whips it away to the right of deep backward square leg for a boundary.

45.2 overs (2 Runs) Nicely played by Mahmudullah. Good length over middle, Mahmudullah hops back and tucks it away with soft hands toward the vacant mid-wicket region and picks up a couple of runs.

45.1 overs (1 Run) Swung away for one! Banged in short over leg stump, Nasum Ahmed backs away and pulls it down crisply to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Right then, that’s all from this game, and this brings an end to the Super Four stage of the 2023 Asia Cup. After nearly three weeks of riveting action, we are down to the final between India and Sri Lanka. A mouthwatering contest awaits us on September 17, with the first ball to be bowled at 3.00 pm IST (9.30 am GMT). As always, you can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh is the Player of the Match for his all-round performance. He says that they wanted to give the youngsters a chance and planned that spin would be useful on this pitch. He adds that he wanted to regain his batting form after a poor Asia Cup and says that as the ball gets older it is easier to hit. He adds that the off spinner was very useful and appreciates Tanzim Hasan Sakib who bowled brilliantly and got important wickets. On the World Cup preparation, he says that the team looks good and is confident that they will be a side to fear.

Time for the presentations…

India’s skipper Rohit Sharma says that the changes were because he wanted to give some game time to the youngsters. He says that Axar’s batting was brilliant and was brilliant out there even after being hit. He credits the opposition bowlers for bowling good lengths and even Gill’s hundred for keeping them in the game. Credits Gill for his game sense and confidence and says that he has clarity for what he has to do out in the middle and that he is there at each practice.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib is up for a chat. He says that the wicket of Rohit Sharma is his debut wicket and it felt like a dream. Adds that he focuses on the line and length He says he prepares for longer spells. He mentions that the last ball the yorker was planned and he backed himself. He also says that he is going home after winning against India and on a positive note.

Earlier in the game, after Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first, Bangladesh were rocked early as they lost both openers inside the first four overs. They were pegged back even more by the Indian seamers and found themselves struggling at 59-4. Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy then got together and forged a solid recovery with a 101-run stand. Shakib’s 80 and Towhid’s 54 allowed Bangladesh to get their innings on track. Towards the end, contributions from Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan helped Bangladesh post a competitive total on the board. For India, Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 3 for 65 from his ten overs.

To be fair to India, they made five changes in their quest to test the bench strength, but they were outplayed by a spirited Bangladesh side. In their pursuit of 266 on a tricky surface, India were off to a shaky start as they lost their in-form skipper Rohit Sharma on the second legal ball of the chase. The move to send debutant Tilak Varma at 3 did not work out, as an error in judgement led to his downfall. Shubman Gill and KL Rahul showed good application against the moving new ball and calmed the nerves in the dressing room. Just when it looked like the two batters had got their eye in, Rahul perished which put India in more trouble. Despite the fall of wickets at the other end, Shubman Gill stood strong and kept the scoreboard ticking from one end. After reaching yet another sublime hundred, he began to up the ante but lost his wicket in the process and took India’s hopes with him. The hopes were reignited when Axar Patel was batting but his departure in the penultimate over, sealed his side’s fate.

Bangladesh halt India’s juggernaut with a stunning victory! Shakib Al Hasan’s men punch above their weight to bow out of the Asia Cup on a high. They get the better of India in Men’s Asia Cup cricket for the first time since 2012. Having finished strongly with the bat, Bangladesh were expected to take the momentum into their bowling effort, and they certainly did. Playing in his maiden ODI game, Tanzim Hasan Sakib accounted for Rohit Sharma in his first over before breaching the defence of Tilak Varma in the following over. What did not help Bangladesh’s cause was that the experienced Mustafizur Rahman lacked rhythm and could not support the debutant from the other end. In the middle phase, it was a trial by spin by Bangladesh, with the spin quartet bowling with excellent control and being rewarded with wickets at regular intervals. At the death, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mustafizur Rahman held their nerves to seal a memorable victory.
