RR vs DC Live Score: Here’s what Sanju Samson said at the toss

We would have bowled first, dew could come in the second innings. Both pitches have an even covering of grass, but the last match was an afternoon game. All the 10 teams are geared up and prepared well, we just need to follow the process and not think too much, then we will be fine. Same team for us.

  • 19:11 (IST)

RR vs DC Live Score: Here’s what Rishabh Pant said at the toss

We’ll bowl first. The wicket looks fine and we want to use it, there might be some dew in the 2nd innings. Feels good to play 100 matches for the same franchise, but every game is important for me. Most of the concerns are regarding injury, but these are things you can’t control. Two changes for us – Ishant hasn’t recovered, Shai Hope has a back spasm. Anrich Nortje and Mukesh Kumar come in.

  • 19:00 (IST)

RR vs DC Live Score: Toss

Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to bowl against Rajasthan Royals in their IPL 2024 match on Thursday in Jaipur.

  • 18:50 (IST)

RR vs DC Live Score: Pitch report

“It’s a fresh surface tonight. 67m square boundaries on both sides and a 76m straight boundary. We’re playing on pitch number 5 today, it is absolutely rock hard, but there are some cracks which move as you press. It means that the bounce could be low with the new ball, it means the tactics could be similar to that of the last game. It wouldn’t be surprising that the Royals could be wanting to bat first again today,” reckon Simon Katich and Samuel Badree

  • 18:46 (IST)

RR vs DC Live Score: Here’s what Nandre Burger said before the match

“It is always good to start the tournament with a win, especially at home. The crowd has been great and the mood in the team is really good. Major part is field placings, the ball is hit to different parts here (in India), so you need to adjust more tactically rather than technically. It’s pretty chilled, everyone knows what they’re expected to do, it’s a great atmosphere (in the team).”

This is the impact Jasprit Bumrah makes. SRH were scoring at 14.64 runs per over before this, yet Bumrah bowled a 7-run over. The over even had a no-ball and a free-hit followed, yet Bumrah managed to keep it economical. Sensational stuff!

    LIVE Score: Abhishek is OUT!

Abhishek Sharma is out at the score of 62 off 23 balls. What a knock this is from the southpaw! He duly maintained the momentum despite SRH losing the wicket of Travis Head. Hyderabad’s scoring rate is 14.64 at the moment and they should aim to continue like that.

IPL 2024 Live Score: Abhishek slams historic fifty

Abhishek Sharma slammed his half-century in 16 balls after slamming the first three balls of Kwena Maphaka for a four and two sixes. It is the fastest half-century by an SRH batter. Sunrisers Hyderabad are litreally toying with Mumbai Indians here. Forget about 200, SRH could get to 250 or even register the highest score of IPL. In cricket, you never know!

LIVE Score: WICKET! Head is OUT!

This is a big-big wicket for Mumbai Indians. Gerald Coetzee has got the danger man Travis Head. However, Head seems to have already done his job. He departs at the score of 62 off 24 balls. Head wanted to play an upper cut but failed to time his shot properly and handed a catch to Naman Dhir. The fielder came a bit forward while taking the catch at deep backward point.

LIVE Score: Poor bowling, superb batting

21 runs came off Piyush Chawla’s first over. While the Mumbai Indians spinner bowled poorly in the over, Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma took full advantage of that. He slammed three sixes in the over. SRH are on top of this game.

IPL 2024 Live Score: Fifty for Travis Head!

What a sensational start this is for Sunrisers Hyderabad! It is Travis Head who deserves the credit for this. He is currently batting on 59 off 20 balls after slamming his fifty off 18 balls. Mumbai Indians are clearly on the back foot, only because of this man, who is literally butchering their bowlers.

    IPL 2024 Live Score: OUT!

The 77-run partnership between Rohit and Brevis has been broken by Sai Kishore. Rohit wanted to play a sweep shot on it but missed it completely. • 22:23 (IST)

    GT vs MI Live: SIX!

Sai Kishore was bowling really well to Dewald Brevis with good length deliveries angling into the batter. But on the fifth ball, the spinner erred in his length was bowling it fuller outside off stump. Brevis boasted his class by slamming the ball over extra cover for a six. Mumbai Indians need 72 runs in 54 balls.

  • 22:20 (IST)

IPL 2024 Live Score: Expensive over

Not a good IPL debut for Spencer Johnson with the ball. The spinners had caused a bit of worry to Mumbai Indians’ batters Rohit Sharma and Dewalad Brevis but once the duo got pace, their eyes lit up. First Brevis slammed a six and then Rohit smashed two fours to make it a 17-run over.

    MI 88/2 (10)

  • 22:15 (IST)

    GT vs MI Live: FOUR!

This is what you call experience. Sai Kishore was bowling slower ones to keep Dewald Brevis in check. Rohit spotted this so when he got the strike after the second ball of the over, he played a reverse sweep to score a boundary, beating the short third man. 7 runs came off the over. Mumbai Indians need 98 runs in 66 balls.

  • 22:09 (IST)

    Gujarat vs Mumbai Live: SIX!

As easy as you like it. A fuller delivery from Umesh Yadav and Rohit Sharma flicked it away for a six to wide of long-on. A lot of dew has arrived and the defence of 168/6 won’t be that easy for Gujarat Titans, especially against a batting like Mumbai Indians’.

  • 21:48 (IST)

IPL 2024 Live Score: Dhir is OUT!

Naman Dhir was having a good debut with the bat but Azmatullah Omarzai has removed him. Dhir slammed the bowler for three fours and a six in the over before losing his wicket to an LBW. The ground umpire was unconvinced with the appeal and GT rightly decided to go upstairs. Ball tracking suggested that it would have hit the middle stump.

  • 21:35 (IST)

GT vs MI Live: Bizarre scenes

    GT vs MI Live: SIX!

This was a poor ball from Piyush Chawla and Sai Sudharsan has given it a perfect treatment. He slog-swept it over the backward square leg fielder for a six. Chawla has to be good with his line and length at this point in time as GT are looking to shift gears.

    GT 88/2 (10.1)

  • 20:09 (IST)

Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians LIVE Score: OUT!

    GT 64/2 (7.4)

  • 20:00 (IST)

IPL 2024 Live: End of powerplay!

It could be seen as a shared powerplay as Gujarat Titans scored 47 runs but lost the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha. WPL 2024 Final: DC struggle!

Delhi Capitals are fighting hard to post a competitive total here. The Meg Lanning side is eight down. More two overs remaining. Can they add more 10-15 runs to their score.

    WPL 2024 Final: OUT!

Radha Yadav is run out! Arundhati Reddy hit the ball on the off-side and a miscommunication in running forced Radha to return to the non-striker’s end. A direct throw from Sophie Molineux rattled the stumps at Radha’s end before the batter could even reach close to the crease.

WPL 2024 Final: 100 up for Delhi Capitals!

Delhi Capitals have raced to the mark of 100 runs in 15.5 overs. They must add another 20 to 25 runs at least in the remaining 17 balls if they wish to stand a chance in this game. This pitch has definitely slowed down but DC at least need 120 runs on the board to make a game out of it.

    WPL 2024 Final: WICKET!

Another one bitest the dust and Royal Challengers Bangalore are doing a clinical job here with the ball. They are not letting Delhi Capitals batters settle. Marizanne Kapp is the latest one to depart after hitting an Asha Sobhana delivery high in the air. Sophie Devine took the catch coming forward from long-on.

WPL 2024 Final: 43 balls since last boundary

This would explain Delhi Capitals’ poor situation better that their last boundary came 43 balls back, more than 7 overs. This is a brilliant turnaround from RCB. DC scored 64 runs in first 7 overs and the next 6 overs saw them scoring only 16 runs. As per the pitch report, a score of over 140 would be a fighting total and that too looks tough for DC from this point.

DC vs RCB, WPL 2024 Final: Good start for Asha!

DC vs RCB, WPL 2024 Final: OUT!

No relief for Delhi Capitals. Meg Lanning has been given out LBW but the batter has reviewed it. Shreyanka Patil boweld an off spin delivery that hit the front pad of Lanning. No bat involved confirms UltraEdge and ball tracking shows that it would have hit the middle stump. Lanning departs for 23 off 23 and DC are in all sorts of trouble.

Shreyas Iyer In Focus As Mumbai Take On Tamil Nadu In Ranji Trophy Semifinal | Cricket News

Out-of-favour India batter Shreyas Iyer will be motivated to prove a point and serve a timely reminder of his skillset as he gets back to domestic action when the record 41-time champions Mumbai take on Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy semifinal in Mumbai on Saturday. Dropped from the Indian Test side and discarded from BCCI’s list of contracted players after he did not make himself available for the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal due to groin and back trouble, Iyer has recovered completely to join Mumbai for the key clash.

Iyer would be key in Mumbai’s scheme of things specially against Tamil Nadu’s quality spin bowling, which has been one of their key weapons this season.

Skipper R Sai Kishore (47 wickets) and fellow left-arm spinner S Ajith Ram (41) are perched atop the list of highest wicket-takers, against whom Iyer and Co. will have a great opportunity to make a strong statement.

The semifinal promises to be an enthralling battle between Tamil Nadu’s persistent and disciplined bowlers and their batters who have piled up big runs this season versus Mumbai’s all-round strength.

Mumbai have made it to the semifinals riding on timely performances from different players barring skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who has just one fifty to show from six matches.

None of the Mumbai bowlers has even made it to the top 10 in the list of wicket-takers — Mohit Avasthi (32) is at 13th — yet they find themselves in the final four with their bowlers sharing the workload quite well.

Both Mumbai and Tamil Nadu are coming off impressive wins at the quarterfinal stage.

Young Musheer Khan’s unbeaten 203 allowed Mumbai a slender lead which swelled to an insurmountable 605 courtesy a historic show from tailenders Tanush Kotian and Tushar Deshpande against Baroda. While Tamil Nadu stopped defending champions Saurashtra.

A standout feature in Tamil Nadu’s impressive run this year has been the fact that they have bowled out each of their opponents twice in all Ranji matches this season irrespective of the outcome.

Both Mumbai and Tamil Nadu have lost only one match each. While Tamil Nadu only rose to find their best form after an away defeat to Gujarat in their season-opener, Mumbai’s narrow loss to Uttar Pradesh only proved to be a minor blip.

It remains to be seen if N Jagadeesan (821 runs) rediscovers his form which helped him register consecutive scores of 245 not out and 321 earlier in the tournament. The right-hander has not crossed fifty in his last seven innings.

However, Baba Indrajith’s (686 runs) enviable consistency has done wonders for Tamil Nadu, with the 29-year-old being on a run-making spree with scores of 80, 187, 98 and 48 in last three matches.

Tamil Nadu have also been strengthened by the inclusion of all-rounder Washington Sundar, who has been released from the Indian Test side.

On what is expected to be a batting-friendly surface, Mumbai’s deep batting line-up with Prithvi Shaw and Bhupen Lalwani at the top and all-rounder Shardul Thakur and even Shams Mulani in the lower-order, the hosts will fancy putting up a big score.

For Tamil Nadu, it would be imperative to keep working with their strengths — if Jagadeesan, Indrajith and Pradosh Ranjan Paul form the fulcrum of their batting, seamer Sandeep Warrier has provided adequate support to the spin duo of Sai Kishore and Ajith.

Mumbai: Ajinkya Rahane (c), Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Bhupen Lalwani, Amogh Bhatkal, Musheer Khan, Prasad Pawar (wk), Hardik Tamore (wk), Shardul Thakur, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Aditya Dhumal, Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Avasthi, Royston Dias, Dhawal Kulkarni.

Tamil Nadu: R Sai Kishore (c), Pradosh Ranjan Paul (vc), Baba Indrajith, Narayan Jagadeesan (wk), Suresh Lokeshwar (wk), Sai Sudharsan, Vijay Shankar, Vimal Khumar, Balasubramaniam Sachin, Washington Sundar, Sandeep Warrier, Trilok Nag, T Natarajan, Mohammed Mohammed, S Ajith Ram.

Gritty Madhya Pradesh look to outwit formidable Vidarbha

A resolute Madhya Pradesh is faced with the daunting task of taming Vidarbha in their home ground, which the hosts have turned into an impregnable citadel this season, when the familiar foes clash in the Ranji Trophy semifinal.

Two-time champions Vidarbha have played four matches at the VCA Stadium this season, and they have won three of them with the solitary defeat coming against Saurashtra.

Those victories have come with convincing margins too – seven wickets against Services, 115 runs against Haryana and 127 runs against Karnataka in the quarterfinals.

The biggest strength of Vidarbha throughout this season has been the collective contribution of their batsmen.

They have found different heroes in veteran Karun Nair (515 runs), import from Delhi Dhruv Shorey (496), top-order batter Atharva Taide (488) and skipper Akshay Wadkar (452). All of them have bailed them out of the woods on different occasions.

The Nagpur pitch has often acted as an ally of the batters but Vidarbha have also been fortunate to have the services of two lion-hearted bowlers – pacer Aditya Thakare and left-arm spinner Aditya Sarwate.

They have grabbed 68 wickets together so far this season, seldom allowing their opponents to dictate the course of the match.

Sarwate’s four-wicket burst against Karnataka is a pointer.

Karnataka had reached 103 for 1 while chasing 371 at close on Day 4, but Sarwate bowled an excellent spell on the fifth day to bundle out the visitors for 243.

But then giving an upper-hand to Vidarbha based on that bull run at home could be a tad not fair as well.

Madhya Pradesh, the 2022 champions, have walked through rings of fire to enter the last four stage.

They managed just three outright wins in eight league matches while fiercely battling in other games to gain first innings lead.

Even in their quarterfinal match against Andhra, MP were on the brink of elimination before clawing back to eke out a four-run win.

The biggest positive for them this season has been the renewed hunger for runs shown by Venkatesh Iyer. Having lost his way in the India scheme of things, Iyer has amassed 528 runs at an average of 52 with a hundred and four fifties.

The left-hander has been well-supported by Himanshu Mantri (513) and Yash Dubey (510). They have shouldered the responsibility of MP’s batting in the absence of Rajat Patidar, who is away on national duty.

MP’s bowling will revolve around the versatile Kumar Kartikeya, who can bowl both orthodox left-arm spin as well as the left-arm wrist spin version.

The Mumbai Indians all-rounder has contributed 38 wickets to his team’s bowling chart this year.

Veteran off-spinner Saransh Jain (27 wickets) and left-arm pacer Kulwant Khejroliya (26 wickets) have backed Kartikeya ably.

But beyond these, the biggest strength of MP is the presence of astute tactician Chandrakant Pandit, their head coach.

The stern taskmaster knows how to get the best from his wards under pressure.

In fact, Vidarbha players will vouch for that because it was Pandit who orchestrated their title run in two successive seasons – 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Vidarbha:Atharva Taide, Dhruv Shorey, Yash Rathod, Karun Nair, Akshay Wadkar (wk/captain), Mohit Kale, Aditya Sarwate, Harsh Dubey, Yash Thakur, Umesh Yadav, Aditya Thakare, Faiz Fazal, Akshay Wakhare, Sanjay Raghunath, Rajneesh Gurbani, Lalit M Yadav, Siddhesh Wath, Jitesh Sharma, Darshan Nalkande, Shubham Dubey.

Madhya Pradesh: Yash Dubey, Himanshu Mantri (wk), Harsh Gawli, Shubham S Sharma (captain), Venkatesh Iyer, Sumit Kushwah, Saransh Jain, Anubhav Agarwal, Kumar Kartikeya, Avesh Khan, Kulwant Khejroliya, Amarjeet Singh, Aditya Shrivastava, Mihir Hirwani, Rishabh Chouhan, Aryan Pandey.

Musheer Khan, Brother Of Sarfaraz Khan, Hits Double Ton For Mumbai In Ranji Trophy | Cricket News

Mumbai were ahead by 257 runs in the first innings after Musheer Khan struck an unbeaten 203, with Baroda reaching 127/2 in reply by the close of play on day two of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal on Saturday. Bhargav Bhatt toiled to return a seven-wicket haul but Musheer worked his way to a fine unbeaten double hundred, powering Mumbai to 383 in the first innings at the BKC Ground.

The visitors were then jolted early in their first innings with opening batter and India U-19 World Cup player Priyanshu Moliya (1) cleaned up by Shardul Thakur, followed by Shams Mulani striking soon to dismiss Jyotsnil Singh for 32.

Baroda were reduced to 65/2 in the 23rd over when the pair of Shashwat Rawat and skipper Vishnu Solanki got together to take their side to the end of play without any further damage.

Rawat was batting on 69 from 88 balls with the help of nine boundaries, whereas Solanki reached 23 not out from 38 balls with a couple of hits to the fence while putting on unbeaten 62 runs for the third wicket.

However, the limelight of the day was once again hogged by Musheer, who converted his maiden first-class hundred into a big score while laying down the foundation for a strong first innings total for Mumbai.

Musheer reached 203 not out from 357 balls with the help of 18 boundaries as his contribution was vital for the home team to get closer to the 400-run mark from 99/4 at one stage on the first day.

The 18-year-old right-handed batter formed a crucial eighth-wicket stand for 181 runs with wicketkeeper-batter Hardik Tamore (57), who himself struck a fine half-century under pressure.

Tamore faced as many as 248 balls and hit only three boundaries to keep the Baroda attack at bay and worked with Musheer to take Mumbai from 142/5 to 323 when the pair was separated.

The hosts were were bowled out for 383 from 140.4 overs with Bhatt adding three more wickets to his first day haul, finishing with 7/112 from as many as 42.4 overs.

Ninad Rathva also shared a heavy bowling workload, returning 38-4-86-3 to account for the remaining wickets.

Brief scores: Mumbai 383 in 140.4 overs (Prithvi Shaw 33, Musheer Khan 203*, Hardik Tamore 57; Bhargav Bhatt 7/112, Ninad Rathva 3/86) lead Baroda 127/2 in 35 overs (Jyotsnil Singh 32, Shashwat Rawat 69*; Shardul Thakur 1/25) by 257 runs.

Sai Kishore, Indrajith, Kumar hand Tamil Nadu lead vs Saurashtra

Skipper R Sai Kishore led by example before Baba Indrajith and Boopathi Kumar struck useful half-centuries to hand Tamil Nadu advantage in their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Saurasthra in Coimbatore on Saturday. Thanks to their efforts, Tamil Nadu reached 300 for six at stumps on the second day of the match, giving them a lead of 117 runs with four first-innings wickets in hand.

Resuming the day at 23 for one, night-watchman Sai Kishore (60) and opener Narayan Jagadeesan (37) managed to put on a 54-run partnership for the second wicket before Parth Bhut trapped the latter leg-before with the team score reading 63.

The hosts were in a spot of bother at 85 for three when Pradosh Ranjan Paul (13) fell to Parth Bhut, but Sai Kishore and Indrajith (80) added 49 runs for the fourth wicket to steady the ship.

Sai Kishore, who grabbed five wickets in Saurashtra’s first innings, brought up his third first-class half-century before being dismissed by Jaydev Unadkat.

Boopathi Kumar (65), along with Indrajith, then stitched an impressive 119-run stand for the fifth wicket to put their team in control.

Indrajith was looking good for what would have been his 17th first-class hundred but Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, the visitors’ highest wicket-taker of the season, got rid of the seasoned TN batter, with the team score reading 253 for five.

For the addition 14 runs, Boopathi was cleaned up by Yuvrajsinh Dodiya.

Vijay Shankar (14 batting) and Mohamed Ali (17 batting) saw the day out as Tamil Nadu finished the day with their nose well ahead.

For Saurashtra, it has been a collective effort from their bowling unit with all five bowlers finding themselves among wickets.

Brief scores: Saurashtra 183 trail Tamil Nadu 300-6 (Baba Indrajith 80; Parth Bhut 2/76) by 117 runs.

Madhya Pradesh fight back against Andhra in Ranji Trophy quarterfinal

A collective bowling performance helped Madhya Pradesh stage a remarkable fightback and extend their overall lead to 83 runs at stumps on the second day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Andhra in Indore on Saturday. The 2021-22 winners MP resumed the day at 234 for 9 and they lost their last wicket without adding any run to their total. They had squandered a perfect start to their first innings when openers Yash Dubey (64) and Himanshu Mantri (49) put on 123 for the first wicket.

For Andhra, KV Sasikanth took 4 for 37 while Nithish Kumar Reddy returned with figures of 3/50. Shoaib Mohammed Khan and Girinath Reddy also chipped in with a wicket each as Andhra had a platform set to capitalise on the game.

But Madhya Pradesh bowlers joined forces to pull off a remarkable performance, bowling out Andhra for a mere 172 in their first innings to hand their side a 62-run lead.

None of the Andhra batters could make a mark against a probing MP bowling line-up. Andhra skipper and current Ranji season leading run-scorer Ricky Bhui was dismissed for 32 (53 balls, 5x4s, 1x6s) by Kulwant Khejroliya.

The damage, however, was done at the top by MP and India bowler Avesh Khan who removed Andhra opener DB Prashanth Kumar for a four-ball duck and also accounted for No. 3 Ashwin Hebbar for just one.

Anubhav Agarwal trapped K Revanth Reddy leg-before for 22 and also pinned India batter Hanuma Vihari for 14 in front of the wickets.

Late in the innings, Agarwal accounted for the dangerous Shoaib Mohammad Khan for 22 to return with a fine 18-6-33-3.

Left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya also got into the act to return 3/41 from his 19 overs, accounting for the highest-scorer of the innings Karan Shinde (38), Nithish (7) and Sasikanth (12).

The visiting side were bowled out for 172 in 68.3 overs, following which Madhya Pradesh reached 21 for no loss at stumps on the second day with an overall lead of 83 runs.

Dubey was batting on six while wicketkeeper-batter Mantri reached 50 not out with the help of three fours to make it MP’s day on Saturday.

Brief Scores: Madhya Pradesh 234 in 81.1 overs (Yash Dubey 64, Himanshu Mantri 49, Saransh Jain 41 not out; Nithish Kumar Reddy 3/50, KV Sasikanth 4/37) and 21/0 in 7 overs (Himanshu Mantri 15 not out) lead Andhra 172 in 68.3 overs (Karan Shinde 38; Anubhav Agarwal 3/38, Kumar Kartikeya 3/41) by 83 runs.

Ranji Trophy: Cheteshwar Pujara Scores 63rd First-class Ton; Saurashtra In Command | Cricket News

Seasoned Cheteshwar Pujara struck his 63rd first-class century while Prerak Mankad and Arpit Vasavada also registered hundreds to give Saurashtra a 387-run first innings lead against Manipur on Saturday. In reply, Manipur, who where bowled out for 142 in their first essay on Friday, were reeling at 55 for 3 at stumps on second day, still trailing by 332 runs.

Resuming the day at 153/3, Saurashtra’s stand-in skipper Vasavada (148) and all-rounder Mankad (173) took the Manipur bowling attack to the cleaners, while sharing a 152-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Coming in at number 6, Pujara (108 off 105 deliveries), known for his defensive style of play, showcased his class once again smashing less than a run-a-ball century, his 63rd in first class cricket.

The 36-year-old hit 12 fours and a six in his unusual knock. Pujara, who is eyeing a return to the Indian Test team, is enjoying a good Ranji season, having already notched up an unbeaten double hundred against Jharkand and another 110 in the previous game.

The Test veteran last appeared for India at the World Test Championship final against Australia in June last year and even though he has continued to pile on runs in first class cricket, the Indian selectors have preferred to look ahead, giving opportunities to youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan in the ongoing marquee series against England.

Defending champions Saurashtra declared their innings at 529 for 6 before pacer Chetan Sakariya, Veteran Saurashtra left-arm spinner Dharmendrasinh Jadeja and off-spinner Yuvrajsinh Dodiya picked up a wicket each to put Saurashtra in a commanding position.

Mumbai Win

All-rounder Shardul Thakur‘s match haul of 10 wickets was complemented by Shivam Dube‘s counter-attacking century as Mumbai finished their group B Ranji Trophy league engagements with a resounding innings and 80 run win against Assam inside two days. The 41-times champions Mumbai have been at their ruthless best this season, capping five wins, four of them with bonus points to top the Group B standings with massive 37 points. They had already qualified before the last match and the final game was more of a warm-up before the semi-finals.

Thakur claimed 8-1-31-4 to add to his 6/21 in the first innings as Assam were folded for 108 in 33 overs with Mumbai wrapping the issue inside two days.

Mumbai encountered a solitary loss — against Uttar Pradesh — from seven matches this season, while against Chhattisgarh they bagged three points with a first innings lead.

Mumbai’s nearest rival Andhra have 25 points with their last league round fixture against Kerala in progress.

Dube, who had completed his second century in four innings on day one, ended his innings for 121 off 140 balls that included 11 fours and five sixes.

Dube now has two fifties and two centuries in six innings since his return to his state side from national duty.

Shams Mulani also chipped in with a quickfire 47-ball 31 that took Mumbai’s first innings to 272, giving them a 188-run first innings lead.

Assam in their second essay were rocked early by new ball bowler Mohit Avasthi (2/10) who removed both their openers on single digit scores.

Tushar Deshpande (2/37) and Tanush Kotian (1/5) then kept chipping away wickets before Thakur wrapped the tail in his four-wicket burst.

Andhra eyeing QF despite Kerala fightback

At Vizianagaram, visitors Kerala put up a strong fightback to post 258/3 in reply to Andhra’s 272 allout. But despite being in the backfoot, Andhra are set to finish second to join Mumbai in the last-eight.

Skipper Sachin Baby was unbeaten on 87, in company of Akshay Chandran (57) at stumps on day two.

Earlier opener Rohan Kunnummal scored 61, while Krishna Prasad got out for 43.

Abhimanyu slams double ton

India A regular Abhimanyu Easwaran struck 200 not out to put Bengal’s in driver’s seat in their match against Bihar at Eden Gardens.

Easwaran hit 23 boundaries in his unbeaten knock of 200 (291 balls) as Bengal declared on 411/5 with a big first innings lead of 316. Bihar were 32/1, trailing Bengal by 284 at close on day two.

But this peformance is little too late for Bengal who are already out of the quarters reckoning having endured two losses.

For Easwaran, who has been found wanting in big matches, this was his third first-class double hundred, first since his career-best 233 for India A against Sri Lanka A in May 2019.

Easwaran also got two reprieves en route to his double century, first he was dropped on 152 and then survived a catch off a no ball on 185.

Bengal skipper Manoj Tiwary scored 30 in what was seemed to be his final innings of his two-decade long career.

The veteran of 147 first-class and 169 List A matches was trapped lbw by Bihar spinner Ashutosh Aman.

The 38-year-old, who is also a junior minister of sports in Bengal cabinet, had announced earlier that he would call it quits after this match.

Brief Scores In Mumbai: Assam 84 and 108; 33 overs (Sumit Ghadigaonkar 30 not out; Shardul Thakur 4/31, Mohit Avasthi 2/10, Tushar Deshpande 2/37). Mumbai 272; 64.4 overs (Shivam Dube 121 not out; Dibakar Johri 5/74). Mumbai won by an innings and 80 runs. Points: Mumbai 7, Assam 0.

At Vizianagaram: Andhra 272; 96.4 overs (Ricky Bhui 87 not out, Maheep Kumar 81, Karan Shinde 43; Basil Thampi 4/48). Kerala 258/3; 81 overs (Sachin Baby 87, Rohan Kunnummal 61, Akshay Chandran 57, Krishna Prasad 43). Kerala trail by 14 runs.

At Kolkata: Bihar 95 and 32/1; 14 overs. Bengal 411/5 declared (Abhimanyu Easwaran 200 not out, Abhishek Porel 56, Manoj Tiwary 30). Bihar trail by 284 runs.

Debutant Vats, Dhull score half-centuries as Delhi end Day 2 on 187/2 vs Odisha

Yash Dhull scored an unbeaten 57 after debutant Gagan Vats hit an impressive 66 as Delhi ended the second day’s play against Odisha at 187 for 2 in an inconsequential group D Ranji Trophy match. Odisha were all out for 440 in their first innings and Delhi still need 254 runs to ensure three points from the final match of the season in which there has been more lows than highs for the team from the national capital.

The Jamia Milia Islamia strip over the years has hardly produced any outright results unless the batting side committed harakiri and it won’t be any different in this game too.

The high point of this match so far has been the performance of two debutants — left-arm spinner Sumit Mathur (4/97), who bowled as many as 45.2 overs and left-handed opener Vats, who hit nine boundaries en route his 107-ball knock.

However, the third debutant leg-spinner Prince Choudhary (0/108 in 19 overs), the selection that raised eyebrows, was clobbered for the second day in a row.

Anuj Rawat, who opened the innings, scored an IPL-style 40 before perishing but young Dhull looked good during his unbeaten knock.

With no seam or swing on offer and deliveries keeping below knee roll, Dhull was able to play his favourite shots on the on-side and also hit a six over long-off off Jamala B Mahapatra’s bowling.

Earlier, starting the day at 314 for 4, former Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Biplab Samantray scored a patient hundred (110) after overnight centurion Subhransu Senapati (111) was dismissed at the start of the day.

Biplab and keeper Ashirwad Swain (46) added 111 runs for the sixth wicket as Odisha cruised along at 430 for 5 but then lost the last five wickets for only 10 runs.

Brief Scores In New Delhi: Odisha 1st Innings 440 (Subhransu Senapati 111, Biplab Samantray 110, Sumit Mathur 4/97). Delhi 1st Innings 187/2 (Gagan Vats 66, Yash Dhull 57).

In Indore: MP 200 and 2nd Innings 92/1 (Yash Dubey 57). J&K 1st Innings 242 (Abdul Samad 103, Sahil Lotra 38).

In Dehradun: Uttarakhand 1st Innings 382 (Jiwanjot Singh 139, Aditya Tare 81, Lukman Meriwala 5/64) and 2nd Innings 29/2.

Baroda 1st Innings: 180 (Shaswat Rawat 93, Deepak Dhapola 5/43).

Tamil Nadu pack off Punjab top-order after posting 435

Tamil Nadu took firm control of their Ranji Trophy Group C match by packing off the Punjab top-order after big hundreds by Baba Indrajith and Vijay Shankar powered the hosts to 435 in their first innings here on Saturday. Punjab were 141/4 at stumps on the second day, trailing by 294 runs.

Batting on 88 overnight, Shankar duly reached his century with the help of 12 fours and a six, while Indrajith went on to make 187 in 295 deliveries after resuming the day on 122.

Indrajith, who added 281 runs for the fourth wicket, found the fence 10 times and cleared it once.

During their marathon association, both Indrajith and Shankar did a lot of running, relying a lot on the singles and twos to keep the scoreboard ticking.

However, Tamil Nadu’s lower-order batters failed to contribute significantly to their total after the dismissal of Shankar to off-spinner Jassinder Singh with the score reading 388 for five.

TN skipper Sai Kishore chipped in 20 before the home team’s first innings came to an end in 131.4 overs.

Off-spinner Sukhwinder Singh was the most successful bowler for Punjab, finishing with figures of 4/99 in 31 overs.

There were two wickets apiece for Jassinder Singh and all-rounder Abhishek Sharma, who bowls left-arm spin.

In reply, at least three Punjab batters looked to have settled down nicely before losing their wickets.

Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed for 24, while Anmolpreet Singh and Nehal Wadhera got out after doing all the hard work, for 41 and 43 respectively.

At stumps, Mandeep Singh and wicketkeeper Anmol Malhotra were batting on 18 and 3 respectively.

Left-arm spinner Ajith Ram, who averages an exceptional 16.6 for his 46 wickets in nine matches, had Prabhsimran trapped in front of the wickets and bowled Wadhera to leave Punjab precariously placed at 131/4.

Brief scores: Tamil Nadu 1st innings 435 all out in 131.4 overs (Baba Indrajith 187, Vijay Shankar 130; Sukhwinder Singh 4/99) vs Karnataka 1st innings 141/4 in 46 overs (Anmolpreet Singh 41, Nehal Wadhera 43; Ajith Ram 2/34) ahead by 294 runs.

In Agartala: Tripura: 149 and 286/9 in 70 overs (Sudip Chatterjee 95, Ganesh Satish 62; Yuvraj Singh 4/84, Himanshu Sangwan 3/55) vs Railways 1st innings 105 all out in 37.3 overs (Arindam Ghosh not out 62; Manisankar Murasingh 5/28, Bikramjit Debnath 3/16) lead by 330 runs.

In Hubballi: Chandigarh 1st innings 267 all out in 106.4 overs (Karan Kaila 79; Hardik Raj 4/56, Vijaykumar Vyshak 4/77) vs Karnataka 1st innings 268/3 in 63 overs (Manish Pandey batting 102, Mayank Agarwal 57) trail by 1 run.

In Porvorim: Goa 1st innings 317 all out in 84.2 overs (Darshan Misal 89, Mohit Redkar 80; Chintan Gaja 3/56) vs Gujarat 1st innings 281/5 in 79 overs (Priyank Panchal batting 150) ahead by 36 runs.

Australia Great’s “Smart Leader” Praise For Ben Stokes Ahead Of 3rd Test Against India | Cricket News

Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell lauded England skipper Ben Stokes for his captaincy in the first two Tests of the five-match series against India, saying that his aggressive approach and attitude has given the team success and plenty of self-belief to youngsters. Chappell said that Stokes’ leadership has made sure that the five-match series between both rivals is level at 1-1 and still wide open. Chappell said that England’s great belief in Stokes shows on and off the field both and lauded England’s approach of continuously looking for wickets.

“Ben Stokes’ aggressive approach to captaincy may have failed to claim victory in a hard-fought second Test but the five-match series against India is still wide open at 1-1. Much of England’s success has been attributed to Bazball – the desire to score quickly and tactically rattle the opposition – but this is a misnomer. What Stokes has really done is set out to achieve victory from ball one by playing aggressive cricket in all aspects of the game,” said Chappell while writing for ESPNCricinfo.

“Stokes has been extremely smart to adopt such an approach and his aggressive tactics have brought England great success in the win column. It’s an approach that England was extremely slow to adopt but Stokes has shown himself to be a strong-minded and smart leader,” he added.

He also said that Stokes’ captaincy has given the team belief that helps them produce something extra to gain some vital success on field, like a game-changing run-out by Stokes of Ravindra Jadeja, which shifted the game in England’s favour and made India succumb to a 28-run loss.

“The England team has great belief in Stokes and it shows both on and off the field. The team takes wickets because they are continually looking for them, and this challenge is accepted by the bowlers. One of the great benefits of this strategy is that it enthuses the best players, and they are the ones most likely to affect the final result,” said Chappell.

“The team also believe that Stokes’ aggression will help them claim the odd unexpected success. This belief is what generally leads to a team producing something extra that leads to a vital wicket. Stokes’ brilliance in the field helped him produce a run-out at a crucial time in Hyderabad – and it also helped increase team belief,” he added.

Chappell said that Stokes’ attitude has instilled a self-belief in youngsters like Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir successful. The former cricketer also said that Hartley’s 14 runs with the ball and crucial 114 runs in four innings with the bat should make a limited Jack Leach “redundant”.

“Stokes’ attitude has helped the younger players believe in themselves, and this is showing in their bowling performances. The success of young players Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir is no fluke; it epitomises the confidence instilled by Stokes’ approach,” said Chappell.

“Hartley’s success with both bat and ball should make the limited Jack Leach redundant in the Test side. One of England’s weaknesses has been their spin department, but Stokes’ positive approach suddenly means that slow bowling has a number of candidates,” he added.

Chappell also pointed out that Ollie Pope’s success at number three and rise of Harry Brook in the middle-order has made England’s batting stronger and called for England to pick up their strongest teams in future. He also criticised England for not always picking up their best wicketkeeper and not valuing the option of an extra pacer.

“The success of Ollie Pope at No. 3 and the ascent of Harry Brook as a vital middle-order player also means the batting is potentially much stronger. These marked improvements in talent should ensure that in the future England pick their strongest available team for the prevailing conditions. England has erred in the past by not picking their best wicketkeeper and by often shunning the value of extra pace. Injuries to fast bowlers aside, this should be a thing of the past,” he said.

Chappell said that England would benefit if Stokes is able to function as a full-time all-rounder and also fields in the slips, where he is “one of the best”. The former cricketer also said that England should utilise less bouncers to add an “element of surprise”.

“It will help England enormously if Stokes is once again able to function as an allrounder, as his bowling is a distinct weapon. It would also help if he fielded in the slips, especially to the spinners, as he is one of the best in that position,” said Chappell.

“The other area where England could improve is in their use of the bouncer. It’s often an overused ploy, and it must be remembered that the biggest advantage of the bouncer is the element of surprise,” he added.

Chappell also said that Stokes should look at his batting as well and be more proactive.

“One personal area Stokes could look at is his own batting. If he were more proactive at the start of each innings, it would improve his play. Stokes is a very good batter but he’s at his best when he’s looking to score,” said Chappell.

Chappell pointed out that Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is a “good leader” and the return of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja from injuries will boost the team. But he also said that the absence of star batter Virat Kohli due to personal reasons is a blow to the team.

The former cricketer also urged Indian selectors to stop overestimating Shreyas Iyer’s batting and value spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

“India is a strong side and they also have a good leader in Rohit Sharma. They will be greatly strengthened by Ravindra Jadeja’s and KL Rahul’s recovery from injury, but that Virat Kohli will not return for the rest of the series is a blow. Hopefully, the selectors will now stop overestimating Shreyas Iyer’s batting ability and learn to value Kuldeep Yadav’s wicket-taking capability more,” said Chappell.

Chappell said that the current England side looks far better from the Joe Root-led side which landed in India back in 2021 and was destroyed by Indian spinners.

“As the home side India should eventually win a tough series, but it has a real battle on their hands. England under the aggressive leadership of Stokes is a far cry from the poorly captained Joe Root team that capitulated against spin on their last tour of the country,” said Chappell.

“This India versus England contest is shaping up as it should: a tough five-match encounter between two talented sides,” he concluded.
