As Russia mourns concert hall attack, some families wonder if loved ones are alive | CBC News

Family and friends of those still missing after an attack that killed more than 130 people at a suburban Moscow concert hall waited for news of their loved ones as Russia observed a day of national mourning on Sunday.

Events at cultural institutions were cancelled, flags were lowered to half-mast and television entertainment and advertising were suspended, according to state news agency RIA Novosti. A steady stream of people added to a makeshift memorial near the burnt-out concert hall, creating a huge mound of flowers.

“People came to a concert, some people came to relax with their families, and any one of us could have been in that situation. And I want to express my condolences to all the families that were affected here and I want to pay tribute to these people,” Andrey Kondakov, one of the mourners who came to lay flowers at the memorial, told The Associated Press.

“It is a tragedy that has affected our entire country,” kindergarten employee Marina Korshunova said. “It just doesn’t even make sense that small children were affected by this event.” Three children were among the dead.

The attack, which has been claimed by an affiliate of ISIS, is the deadliest on Russian soil in years.

As rescuers continue to search the damaged building and the death toll rises as more bodies are found, some families still don’t know if relatives who went to the event targeted by gunmen on Friday are alive. Moscow’s Department of Health said Sunday it has begun identifying the bodies of those killed via DNA testing, which will need at least two weeks.

Igor Pogadaev was desperately seeking any details of his wife’s whereabouts after she went to the concert and stopped responding to his messages.

He hasn’t seen a message from Yana Pogadaeva since she sent her husband two photos from the Crocus City Hall music venue.

No information from hotline

After Pogadaev saw the reports of gunmen opening fire on concertgoers, he rushed to the site, but couldn’t find her in the numerous ambulances or among the hundreds of people who had made their way out of the venue.

“I went around, searched, I asked everyone, I showed photographs. No one saw anything, no one could say anything,” Pogadaev told the AP in a video message.

He watched flames bursting out of the building as he made frantic calls to a hotline for relatives of the victims, but received no information.

Video shows panic, people fleeing as shots heard in Russian concert hall

Video obtained by Reuters from Telegram channel Ostorozhno Novosti on Friday shows people in a concert hall outside Moscow fleeing and shouting ‘close the doors’ amid the sounds of gunfire.

As the death toll mounted on Saturday, Pogodaev scoured hospitals in the Russian capital and the Moscow region, looking for information on newly admitted patients.

But his wife wasn’t among the 154 reported injured, nor on the list of 50 victims authorities have already identified, he said.

Refusing to believe that his wife could be one of the 137 people who died in the attack, Pogadaev still hasn’t gone home.

“I couldn’t be alone anymore, it’s very difficult, so I drove to my friend’s,” he said. “Now at least I’ll be with someone.”

The Moscow Region’s Emergency Situations Ministry posted a video Sunday showing equipment dismantling the damaged music venue to give rescuers access.

Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin appears to be trying to tie Ukraine to the attack, something the Ukrainian government firmly denies.

ISIS claims responsibility for Moscow-area concert hall attack

ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack on a Moscow-area concert hall that killed dozens of people and injured more than 100.

Russian authorities arrested four suspected attackers on Saturday, Putin said in an nighttime address to the nation, among 11 people detained on suspicion of involvement in the attack. He said that they were captured while fleeing to Ukraine.

Though no court hearing has been officially announced, there was a heavy police presence around Moscow’s Basmanny District Court on Sunday. Police tried to drive journalists away from the court.

Putin called the attack “a bloody, barbaric terrorist act” and said Russian authorities captured the four suspects as they were trying to escape to Ukraine through a “window” prepared for them on the Ukrainian side of the border.

Russian media broadcast videos that apparently showed the detention and interrogation of the suspects, including one who told the cameras he was approached by an unidentified assistant to an Islamic preacher via a messaging app and paid to take part in the raid.

Kyiv strongly denied any involvement, and ISIS’s Afghanistan affiliate, ISIS-K, claimed responsibility.

WATCH | ISIS-K has been fixated on Russia for the past 2 years:

Moscow concert hall attack: Why ISIS would target Russia

ISIS is claiming responsibility for a Moscow-area concert hall attack that’s left dozens dead. CBC’s Ben Makuch, a national security reporter who has covered ISIS for more than a decade, explains why the terrorist group would target Russia.

Putin didn’t mention ISIS in his speech to the nation, and Kyiv accused him and other Russian politicians of falsely linking Ukraine to the assault to stoke fervor for Russia’s fight in Ukraine, which recently entered its third year.

U.S. intelligence officials said they had confirmed the ISIS affiliate’s claim.

“ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack. There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever,” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement.

The U.S. shared information with Russia in early March about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow, and issued a public warning to Americans in Russia, Watson said.

The raid was a major embarrassment for the Russian leader and happened just days after he cemented his grip on the country for another six years in a vote that followed the harshest crackdown on dissent since the Soviet times.

Some commentators on Russian social media questioned how authorities, who have relentlessly suppressed any opposition activities and muzzled independent media, failed to prevent the attack despite the U.S. warnings.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that the U.S. condemned the attack and said that ISIS is a “common terrorist enemy that must be defeated everywhere.”

ISIS, which fought against Russia during its intervention in the Syrian civil war, has long targeted Russia. In a statement posted by the group’s Aamaq news agency, the ISIS Afghanistan affiliate said that it had attacked a large gathering of “Christians” in Krasnogorsk.

The group issued a new statement Saturday on Aamaq, saying the attack was carried out by four men who used automatic rifles, a pistol, knives and firebombs. It said the assailants fired at the crowd and used knives to kill some concertgoers, casting the raid as part of ISIS’s ongoing war with countries that it says are fighting against Islam.

In October 2015, a bomb planted by ISIS downed a Russian passenger plane over Sinai, killing all 224 people on board, most of them Russian vacationers returning from Egypt.

The group, which operates mainly in Syria and Iraq but also in Afghanistan and Africa, also has claimed responsibility for several attacks in Russia’s volatile Caucasus and other regions in past years. It recruited fighters from Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union.

Greener buildings gain in value, others face ‘huge problems’ as environmental rules loom over European property market

Real estate investors already battered by high interest rates now face the prospect of significant writedowns triggered by new European regulations.

Property owners across the region will need to invest vast sums in renovations to ensure their buildings aren’t emitting illegal levels of carbon dioxide or consuming excessive amounts of energy, according to lawyers advising the sector.

The situation “is causing huge problems,” said Rory Bennett, a managing associate at the real estate practice of Linklaters in London. Portfolios containing energy-inefficient buildings face “the task of expending a huge amount of capital to bring that up to scratch, together with refinancing or redeveloping at the highest interest rates we’ve seen in decades.”

This month, lawmakers in the European Union passed the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. The rollout will be gradual — lasting more than a decade — but property owners that fall too far behind risk being saddled with assets that can no longer be sold or rented.

The directive is intended to force property owners to embark on large-scale renovations to improve the environmental credentials of buildings across Europe, and ensure the bloc meets its commitment to the Paris Agreement. For now, refurbishments in the region only reduce annual energy consumption by 1%, according to the European Commission. To meet its climate requirements, the EU says property owners need to raise spending on renovations by €275 billion ($300 billion) a year.

“It’s huge sums of money,” Bennett said. “The reality is there will be some who simply can’t afford or would choose not to comply with the legislation directive on the basis that paying a penalty is, at least in the short term, easier than having to spend a huge amount of your reserves on bringing your stock up to grade.”

For real estate investors, the new wave of green requirements adds to the fallout from higher interest rates. The situation has started to attract short sellers, who are now targeting the weakest links in a global property market that’s struggling on multiple fronts.

Europe’s new energy-performance law is likely to affect tens of thousands of buildings across the region. By 2033, property owners will need to have renovated a quarter of the EU’s biggest energy-guzzling buildings. Fossil-fuel boilers are out and solar-panel-ready buildings are in. And by 2030, all new buildings must be emissions-free.

The directive is part of a package of first-ever initiatives adopted in recent years to green the EU economy, and includes legal liability for failing to address environmental harms, as well as the mandatory disclosure of energy, emissions and water-use data.

The UK also is planning rules that will force property owners to embark on environmental upgrades. Mount Street, a London-based company managing €65 billion of European real estate loans, estimates that about 70% of Britain’s commercial property currently has an energy performance certificate (EPC) grade of C or lower. That implies major upgrades ahead as the UK plan gives all building owners until April 2027 to reach a grade of at least C. By April 2030, a building’s grade can’t fall below B for it to stay operational.

Jim Gott, who manages the asset surveillance team at Mount Street, says the current proposal implies an investment need as high as £150 billion ($189 billion).

“In a lot of places, you’re going to struggle,” Gott said. “If you don’t hit those EPC targets, it becomes effectively illegal to rent the space. It will affect the capital value of the building.”

About 60% of UK warehouse space is on track to fall short of a B rating by 2030, according to law firm Ashurst, which cited data published in Logistics Matters.

Stricter EPC rules are becoming a potential “regulatory cliff edge for unrentable European offices,” said Kim Politzer, head of research for European real estate at Fidelity International. “Poorer quality buildings in secondary locations need expensive capex renovations” and “the sums are getting more difficult to add up.”

In the EU, about 85% of buildings were constructed before 2000, according to the European Commission. Because of poor energy performance, they are the single biggest users of power at a time when fossil fuels constitute two-thirds of the energy sources for heating and cooling. The EU wants the sector’s emissions cut by 60% by 2030.

Such considerations have taken on growing importance in investment negotiation and decision processes, said Jean-François Vandenberghe, a real estate specialist at Baker McKenzie. Some asset owners and managers are embracing the new trend, while others are focused on mitigating the obligations, he said.

On the flip side, buildings that are already green are more in demand than ever. In major EU markets, 22% of the office stock was certified sustainable as of mid-2023, up from 15% in 2019, according to CBRE, a real estate adviser. Other CBRE research found that when the effects of a building’s size, location, age and renovation history are accounted for, green certified buildings command a 7% rental premium.

Demand for green properties by the EU’s biggest companies currently exceeds availability by more than 50%, according to a November report by Jones Lang LaSalle Inc.

Bennett at Linklaters said he’s regularly called into meetings at which “we spend hours talking about what to do.”

For now, real estate investors are just hoping the wider economic situation improves and softens the blow of the regulatory shock ahead.

“If the economic environment picks up, interest rates will come down and that’s going to really help with the decision-making,” Bennett said. It would give real estate investors “a little bit more breathing space.”

Rangers Women 4-1 Partick Thistle Women: Jo Potter’s side retain Sky Sports Cup with comfortable win at Tynecastle

Rangers remain on track for a domestic treble after beating Partick Thistle 4-1 at Tynecastle to retain the Sky Sports Cup.

In front of over 4,000 spectators at Tynecastle – a record for the Sky Sports Cup final – Rangers were heavy favourites to retain the trophy and didn’t disappoint despite a determined start by their part-time opponents.

Partick Thistle, competing in their first women’s cup final, had never beaten Rangers in 10 previous meetings and gave a good account of themselves early on in Edinburgh. They fell behind in the 13th minute when Mia McAulay fired home after racing onto a long ball but were soon level when a stunning Rachel Donaldson strike found the top corner from outside the area (18).

Despite impressing in the first half, the Jags trailed again 10 minutes before the break when Rachel Rowe produced her own piece of magic, and Jo Potter’s team effectively put the result beyond doubt in first-half stoppage time when Rio Hardy – who later missed an open goal – slotted past Ava Easdon following a quick-one two with Jane Ross (45+2).

Partick Thistle needed something special to turn the final around but any hopes of an incredible comeback were ended just eight minutes into the second half when Olivia McLoughlin swept home from close range to give Rangers a 4-1 lead. Rangers captain Nicola Docherty almost added a fifth goal late on but her effort struck a post and that proved to be the final action of the game.

The victory marks Potter’s first piece of silverware since taking charge of Rangers in the summer of 2023 and could be the start of a potential treble, with her side leading the Scottish Women’s Premier League by one point and already in the semi-finals of the Scottish Women’s Cup.

Rangers remain on track to become just the second Scottish team to win all three domestic trophies and the first since Glasgow City achieved the feat for the fifth time at the end of the 2014-15 season.

‘We keep our feet on the ground’ – Potter on Rangers’ treble chances

Rangers head coach Jo Potter says the unity within the squad was evident in the Sky Sports Cup final

Rangers head coach Jo Potter told Sky Sports:

“It’s tough to reflect immediately but your first thoughts go to your players. You can see how they much enjoyed it, how much they deserved it, and how much they’ve been working towards this moment. I think it might be a bit later on when I’m sat with a drink celebrating that I’ll think about myself.

“There is a lot of expectation at Rangers but we put a lot of expectation on ourselves. We hold really high standards. When you’ve been there and done it, you’ve felt what it takes to be a winner and it’s about making sure we keep that consistency so that when they step out onto stages like this it’s not too much of a difference.

“They did the job out there, especially in the second half when they took control. They made my job easier. The group is really together. They really get on and I think it shows out there. You can see what it means to the group and how much they enjoy each other’s company.”

On Rangers’ chances of winning a domestic treble, Potter added: “There was a lot of talk about it before this game and I was very quick to say: ‘You’ve not won anything yet’. I’m happy for the players who have managed to retain that trophy.

“It’s a big one ticked off, but we keep our feet on the ground and we keep grinding it out.”

Graham: It’s disappointing but I’m proud of my players

Partick Thistle boss Brian Graham says he is proud of his players despite their 4-1 defeat

Partick Thistle boss Brian Graham told Sky Sports:

“First and foremost, I’m proud of my players. I thought we had a go at the start of the game and in the first half the girls were excellent, but it was disappointing to find ourselves 3-1 down.

“It was key moments in the game. A simple ball over the top and we’re one down. A bit of magic from Rachel Donaldson gets us back in the game, but then we can’t switch off at a set-piece. It was a bit of magic from Rachel Rowe, but then you’ve got to get to half-time 2-1 down to give yourselves a chance.

“There was a moment when we probably could have held the ball in the middle of the pitch but we didn’t and Rangers went and capitalised on it by scoring the third goal. So it’s disappointing in that aspect because I didn’t believe we deserved to be 3-1 down at that point.

“But I thought the girls were a credit to the club. I’m so proud of them. It wasn’t to be our day but you’ve seen in the first half how good we can be.”

What’s next?

Rangers return to Scottish Women’s Premier League action next Sunday when they host Hibernian at Broadwood Stadium; kick-off 2pm.

Up next for Partick Thistle is a home match against Hearts on the same day at Petershill Park, with kick-off at the slightly earlier time of 12.10pm.

The Best American Fighting Films (besides Rocky)

While Rocky typically tops the list of everyone’s picks for best fighting films, there are a lot of other great ones worth checking out.

Ever since Rocky took the world by storm in 1976, people have been enamored with the idea of an underdog fighting his way to victory. There is something about two people entering an arena and just seeing who is the best. Movies help us find the themes and metaphors we can use for this mentality in our everyday life. If you’re in a funk and then play the Rocky theme, you suddenly become more motivated than ever to get over that mountain called life. With Creed IV reportedly in the works, we figured this would be a great time to put together a list of the best fighting movies other than Rocky.

Best fighting Films

Tommy returns home after a stint in the Marines to find his father has cleaned himself up. They begin training for an upcoming mixed martial arts tournament offering the sport’s biggest payday. Tommy’s estranged brother Brendan also enters the tournament, and the two end up on a collision course as each fights his way to the top. An interesting MMA film that finds a way to examine the drama of a broken home and how the characters can work toward healing.

Best fighting Films

A martial arts team is assembled for the United States to compete in a Tae Kwon Do tournament in Korea. Everyone on the team has to put their personal problems aside to co-exist, but that is easier said than done. While they combat the other teams in the tournament, they must also keep an eye on each other. This film is reportedly UFC legend Chuck Liddell’s favorite martial arts movie. The sequels shifted gears and became full-on action movies – and speaking of those, we suggest giving the action-oriented Best of the Best 2 a shot.

Best fighting Films

One of my personal favorites on the list. This film is supposed to be based on the true story of an American soldier named Frank Dux. He goes AWOL to enter a secret underground tournament (much bigger and more organized than your typical underground fight club) called the Kumite. The world’s best martial arts fighters show up to compete but quickly find that the tournament is serious business. The reigning hand to hand combat champion has no problem killing his opponents to keep his title. While Frank dodges officers sent to drag him back to the military, he begins a relationship with an American journalist who wants to report on the famed event. A Jean Claude Van Damme classic that any fight fan should check out. Even though it is kind of a cheese-fest, Bloodsport is still one of the best fighting films of all time.

Best fighting Films

You’re about to say this is a hockey movie, not a fighting movie. Well, I would say it is actually both. A struggling hockey team is on the verge of closing. The coach/player, Reggie Dunlop, decides how to help the team get attention and a wider audience is to bring in the Hansen brothers. A group of goonish hockey players likes to start fights and cause violence on the ice. It quickly catches on, and the team sees a much-needed boost. The fights in this film are a lot of fun to watch, bringing about its own sort of comedy. Maybe not as serious as Creed III but still a great fighting film.

Best fighting Films

Frustrated and conflicted teenager Diana is close to being kicked out of high school for fighting. She is introduced to the boxing world as she searches for something to grab onto. Her father disapproves, but she finds that she has natural talent as she keeps training. To claim her future, she begins to push herself further into the world of boxing and hopes to find everything she’s looking for. This film was Michelle Rodriguez’s first film and put her on the map. This movie actually has a lot in common with Creed III.

Best fighting Films

Based on the true story of Micky Ward. His older brother Dickie got some boxing acclaim when he faced Sugar Ray Leonard back in 1978. Now Dickie has fallen into a life of drugs and crime but still trains Micky. As Micky sees those around him falling to the wayside, he decides he needs a change if his boxing career will ever move forward. This causes a rift in his family as his mother is his manager, and his brother has been training him. Can he move forward without them?

Best fighting Films

Another JCVD classic. In this one, he plays Kurt Sloane. He is the corner man for his kickboxing champion brother Eric. Eric ends up paralyzed when he steps into the ring with Tong Po. Kurt thinks Po injured him on purpose and seeks revenge. He wants to train to fight him in the ring, but no one will take him. Finally, he finds an old kickboxing trainer who lives alone in the mountains. His methods are unconventional, but Kurt sticks with it to learn what he needs to avenge his injured brother.

Best fighting Films

Martial Arts Expert Michael Jai White takes over the title role of George Chambers from Ving Rhames in the first film. Chambers goes to Russia but finds he is sent to prison for bogus drug possession charges. The warden says that if he fights in the underground fighting league within the prison he will help him get an early release. He turns him down at first but is soon forced to agree. He begins to train to take on the reigning champ with the help of another prisoner who has knowledge of how to win. To get out of Russia with his life, he has to win. This underseen movie is great and earns its status as one of the best fighting films. The sequel, Undisputed 3: Redemption, does something interesting and makes this movie’s antagonist, the Russian fighter Boyka (played by Scott Adkins), the hero.

Best fighting Films

Maggie wants to train with the best to become a professional boxer and finds legendary trainer Frankie Dunn. At first, he refuses to train her. His personal life has been in tatters as his relationship with his daughter has fallen apart. When he sees she has natural talent, he finally relents. The two form a powerful bond that helps them get what they want most in life. Special note – this is the only movie ever to make our editor-in-chief Chris Bumbray cry in a theater.

Best fighting Films

Light heavyweight champion boxer Billy Hope is on top of the world when his wife is shot during an altercation with another boxer. After her death, Billy begins a spiral of self-destruction, leading to his daughter being taken away from him. He knows he has to rebuild his life and seeks out trainer Tick Wills. If he is going to get his life back on track and his daughter back, he knows he has to start at the bottom and fight back to the top.

raging bull Oscar

Raging Bull (1980)

Would we consider this a true-fighting film? Granted, the bone-shattering fight sequences in Martin Scorsese’s boxing classic are considered legendary, but it’s less about fighting as a sport than a psychological deep dive into its protagonist. Indeed, Robert De Niro’s Jake LaMotta is one of the most compelling characters ever featured in a film like this, and it remains the definitive boxing bio. Again though, it’s much less about the sport of boxing than the insecurities of its horrifically flawed anti-hero.

Are you excited about Creed IV? What are your favorite fighting films? Let us know in the comments.

    IPL 2024 Live Score: OUT!

The 77-run partnership between Rohit and Brevis has been broken by Sai Kishore. Rohit wanted to play a sweep shot on it but missed it completely. The ball struck him right in front of the stumps and umpire had no hesitation in raising his finger. Rohit still decided to go upstairs but could not save himself. He departed for 43 off 29 balls.

    GT vs MI Live: SIX!

Sai Kishore was bowling really well to Dewald Brevis with good length deliveries angling into the batter. Mumbai Indians need 72 runs in 54 balls.

    GT vs MI Live: FOUR!

This is what you call experience. Sai Kishore was bowling slower ones to keep Dewald Brevis in check. Rohit spotted this so when he got the strike after the second ball of the over, he played a reverse sweep to score a boundary, beating the short third man. 7 runs came off the over. Mumbai Indians need 98 runs in 66 balls.

    IPL 2024 Live Score: SIX!

Pressure was piling on Brevis and he has now played a big shot for a six. Rashid Khan gave some flight and Brewis tonked him over the long-off fielder for a biggie. This will give some relief to Brevis, who was strike at a rate less than 100 before this six.

As easy as you like it. A fuller delivery from Umesh Yadav and Rohit Sharma flicked it away for a six to wide of long-on. A lot of dew has arrived and the defence of 168/6 won’t be that easy for Gujarat Titans, especially against a batting like Mumbai Indians’.

Naman Dhir was having a good debut with the bat but Azmatullah Omarzai has removed him. Dhir slammed the bowler for three fours and a six in the over before losing his wicket to an LBW. The ground umpire was unconvinced with the appeal and GT rightly decided to go upstairs. Ball tracking suggested that it would have hit the middle stump.

Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony against Kavanaugh made her a target. But she would do it again | CBC Radio

The Sunday Magazine20:34Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony against Kavanaugh made her a target. But she would do it again

Christine Blasey Ford says it was her civic duty to testify against Brett Kavanaugh in 2018. And if she could go back in time, she would do it all over again.

Ford, a California psychology professor, was propelled into the public sphere more than five years ago when she stood in front of the U.S. Senate judiciary committee and testified that Kavanaugh, then a U.S. Supreme Court nominee, had sexually assaulted her when they were both teenagers.

Kavanaugh vehemently denied the allegations, and ultimately, secured his position as a justice on the nation’s highest court. Ford, meanwhile, became a target for death threats and smear campaigns — something that’s taken her years to recover from.

Nevertheless, she says: “I would absolutely do it again.”

“I still have the same sense of commitment to the United States and the same sense of civic duty,” she said. “I’m proud of what I did, and I certainly paid a cost, and it was really difficult. I continue to pay a little bit for it — and I’m willing to pay for it,” Ford told The Sunday Magazine host Piya Chattopadhyay in a Canadian exclusive interview.

Ford describes her decision to testify, and the fallout she experienced afterwards, in her memoir One Way Back, which hit shelves on Thursday.

Standing in front of an oncoming train

Before she was known to the public as Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault, she was known to her loved ones as Chrissy Blasey, a psychologist, mother and avid surfer.

“I had a pretty good life. I was a university professor, working hard from August until June, and then spending nine weeks every summer on the beach and in the ocean,” she said.

It was on the beach that she first told her friends that a man being considered for the U.S. Supreme Court bench had once assaulted her, and that she intended to do something about it.

“I felt that it was my civic duty to share that information as quickly as possible,” she said.

Her friends, she says, tried to talk her out of it. But she was adamant. She’d grown up in Washington, D.C., she said, and felt a strong sense of patriotism and reverence for the court, which she says is “where we send the best of the best.”

So she wrote a letter to her representative, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, and shared an anonymous tip with the Washington Post.

Everyone she told, she says, gave her the same advice: Lawyer up.

“I didn’t really understand why I needed lawyers. I hadn’t done anything wrong, and I simply wanted to relay information that I thought was useful, to try to help the people who were making the decision,” she said.

But that’s not how it played out. Her identity was leaked to the media, forcing her to go public with her story. She was then called upon to testify at a public hearing on the allegations.

“I thought this was all going to play out privately, and that maybe there would be a private meeting with senators or officials who were considering the vote on him,” she said.

“It wasn’t terrifying until I knew that it was going to be a public situation.”

‘No turning back’

She still remembers that day, Sept. 27, 2018, when she stood in front of U.S. lawmakers and TV cameras and shared her story.

“I remember walking down the hallway and knowing there was no turning back, and I was just trying to make it to the chair,” she said.

She was in awe, she said, and frightened — but she took it one question at a time.

“I just, I guess, leaned on my sense of patriotism, my sense of doing the right thing, the way I’d been raised and that I was telling the truth,” she said.

“The chips were going to fall where they were going to fall, and I had to detach from the outcome because that was just too stressful to think about.”

WATCH | Ford and Kavanaugh testifiy:

The key moments of Kavanaugh and Blasey Ford’s dramatic testimony

Christine Blasey Ford alleges that a drunken, 17-year-old Brett Kavanaugh forced her down on a bed, groped her and tried to take off her clothes during a high school gathering in the summer of 1982. She was 15 at the time.

After she testified, it was Kavanaugh’s turn to speak. In an intense and emotional speech, he maintained he had “never sexually assaulted anyone — not in high school, not in college, not ever” and accused Ford of “totally and permanently” destroying his family and his reputation.

It was not, Ford says, entirely unexpected.

From her work in psychology, she knows this as a deflection tactic referred to as DARVO — deny, attack, and reverse victim and offender.

“It becomes: I ruined his life. So I become the offender and he becomes the victim. And it’s just a playbook that’s used so often that it’s very predictable,” she said.

CBC reached out to Kavanaugh, who declined to comment for this story.

The next few months, Ford says, were intense.

“My family, we were living away from home. It wasn’t safe to be at home, so we were gone for three and a half months and living with security detail,” she said.

“But on the other hand, I had this outpouring of support from all 50 states, and 42 countries — handwritten letters that were just so powerful and heartwarming and heartbreaking.”

Since the day of her testimony, Ford says she’s received more than 100,000 handwritten letters of support — including several boxes from Canada. Many are from people who told her they experienced sexual assault themselves.

“They are how I got through — and how my family got through — the ordeal was this incredible, outpouring of support from all over the country and all over the world. I’m really grateful,” she said.

A woman sits in an office at a table writing. The table, and the entire room around her, are stacked with boxes upon boxes of letters.
Since she testified against Brett Kavanaugh, Ford says she has received more than 100,000 handwritten letters of support from all over the world. (Raincoast Books)

That, she says, is ultimately why she stands by her decision despite everything she’s been through, and why she decided to write a memoir.

“It’s a huge thank you [to the letter writers],” she said.

“I wish I could write to them individually. I started and tried, and I wrote back to all the people who are over 90 years of age, and that took me so long. And I thought even if I spend every day doing this, I won’t necessarily be able to get to everyone.

“So this is my first thank you to them. And hopefully there’ll be other ways that I can thank them as well.”

Global Gold Analyticals: 24.3.2024

Weekly Technical and Fundamental Analysis of Gold – March 24

The global gold ounce managed to set a new and historic record for itself and its supporters by the week ending March 22. However, from the second half of last week, global gold began to decline or, better said, corrected itself.

The main reason for gold’s return to the downside was strong data from the United States that caused all speculations about the start of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate reduction process to diminish.

Last week’s events for gold:

Last week, on the first working day of the Forex market, the global gold opened at a price of 2156 and went up to 2163 dollars; in fact, the global ounce ended its first day in a calm and low volatility state.

The main reason for this session’s inactivity was the important meeting of the Federal Reserve on Wednesday, where the whole market was waiting to hear news and statements from Federal Reserve officials.

On Tuesday, gold was in a similar situation to the previous day and after opening at 2160, it dropped to 2147 and finally closed at 2157, ending its working day.

Then came Wednesday, the day when the entire market awaited the Federal Reserve’s statement in March.

Last Wednesday, as predicted, the Federal Reserve left its interest rates unchanged in the range of 5.25 to 5.5 percent.

What was important for traders and the entire market was reading the prediction of the future economic situation of the United States, which is famous for the Dot Plot chart.

The March Dot Plot chart showed that Federal Reserve officials are still expecting three interest rate cuts of 75 basis points for the current year 2024. This prediction was consistent with December 2023.

The initial market reaction to this news was that the yield on U.S. ten-year Treasury bonds began to decline and had negative effects on the U.S. dollar. The reason for this reaction was that traders started speculating that the Federal Reserve will reduce its rates from June onwards.

It is worth mentioning that the well-known interest rate predictor tool CME Group showed a decrease in the probability of the Federal Reserve leaving its rates unchanged in June from 40% to 25% before the statement and reading of the dot plot chart.

Jerome Powell, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, adopted a relatively optimistic tone about the future inflation outlook of the United States in a press conference after this important meeting, forcing the dollar to remain under downward pressure.

Powell admitted that inflation numbers in January and February have been “very high,” but emphasized that these data have not changed the overall story about inflation reduction and he and his colleagues have inferred that this issue is mostly due to seasonal effects.

As the selling of the US dollar increased in the Asian trading session on Thursday, XAU/USD started its upward rally towards its highest historical record of $2220.

However, later on the same Thursday, due to the release of strong economic data from the US, the dollar began to strengthen against its competitors, causing global gold to start returning to the downside.

Further details of the reports on Thursday are as follows:

  • The US Department of Labor reported that initial claims for unemployment benefits for the week ending March 16 decreased to 210,000.
  • In addition, the World S&P Institute announced that the US composite purchasing managers’ index in March increased to 52.2% in the initial estimate, indicating that economic activities in the US private sector have grown at an acceptable pace.
  • Chris Williamson, Senior Business Economist at the World S&P Institute, commented on the survey findings about PMI: The increasing rise in costs along with strengthening pricing power against the backdrop of recent demand growth signifies renewed inflationary pressures in March.
  • Meanwhile, the unexpected decision of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) to reduce interest rates by 25 basis points and the negative statement from the Bank of England’s (BoE) Monetary Policy Committee led to capital outflows from the British pound and Swiss franc.

This important factor caused the dollar to rise further on Thursday.

In fact, two members of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England named Jonathan Haskel and Catherine Mann, who had voted for a 25-basis-point rate hike in the previous meeting, this time voted to keep interest rates unchanged at their current levels, while Swati Dingra continued to push for a 25-basis-point rate cut.

Ultimately, due to the strengthening of the US dollar overall on the last trading day of the week, global gold continued its decline to below $2160 and ultimately ended the week at $2165.

Gold outlook for the upcoming week:

On Monday, with the start of the forex trading week, no significant news is expected for the dollar and gold, and important news is actually expected to start from Tuesday.

The United States is set to announce durable goods orders for the month of February on Tuesday, and the Conference Board also intends to release the Investor Confidence Index for February.

The US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is also expected to release its latest estimates and evaluations for the fourth quarter US Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index on Thursday.

What is the PCE index?

The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, commonly known as the PCE index, evaluates changes in prices of goods and services purchased by consumers in the United States. The PCE index is used to record inflation across a wide range of consumer costs and reflects their behavior.

Since households are one of the fundamental components of the circular flow of the economy, their choices and decisions regarding consumption are one of the most important or perhaps the most important aspects of economic interpretations.

Keep in mind that consumers allocate a significant portion of their income to consumption during the year, and consumption accounts for almost 70% of US Gross Domestic Product. Therefore, the role of consumption and consumer spending planning in the economy is very important.

The market expects US GDP in the fourth quarter of 2023 to remain at the previous figure of 3.2%. Remember that market reaction to this report is very quick, but its effects on the market will be short-lived.

Remember, if for any reason this figure is higher than 3.2%, the US dollar will strengthen and global gold will come under downward pressure. Conversely, if the reported figure is lower than expected, the US dollar will weaken and gold will start to strengthen.

It is true that traders closely follow the important PCE index, but because the US stock and bond markets are closed on Friday due to “Easter” trading volume decreases significantly.

But don’t forget that this reaction could manifest itself on Monday with the start of the forex trading week.

If for any reason the PCE index is better than market expectations and higher than predicted, the US dollar will strengthen on the first day of the week, which is Monday.

Conversely, if the reported figure is less than 0.3%, the dollar will weaken and gold will start to strengthen.

                                            Calendar of economic indicators

Weekly Gold Technical Analysis

The price floor and ceiling for gold in the past week were $2146 and $2222. If you open a daily gold chart right now and plot an RSI indicator, you will see that the peak of this indicator is moving downwards within the overbought zone and showing a value of 64.

This means that control is still in the hands of market bulls, but global gold has finally started its correction from its historical high.

Furthermore, if you draw an ascending channel on the daily chart at this time, you will notice that global gold, which had exited its channel ceiling, has returned inside this channel.

Key Support Levels in Global Gold Analysis

If gold is to decline, the first significant support level will be the important area of $2160. If gold penetrates below this area, the next important price level is $2150. If market bears push gold lower, the next important levels will be $2140 and $2130.

Key Resistance Levels in Global Gold Analysis

If gold increases, the first important resistance level will be $2180. If gold successfully passes through this area, the next important level is $2190. If market bulls succeed in pushing gold higher, the next resistance levels will be $2200 and $2222.

Toothbrush Boy David Leavitt Throws Another Tantrum, Says the New Twitter ‘Protecting Nazis’

Poor David Leavitt. No matter how hard he tries to be taken seriously, he just keeps stepping on rakes. We’re all familiar with the ‘award-winning’ journalist’s greatest hits. Most famously, of course, in 2020, he argued with — and even called the police on — an employee at Target for refusing to sell him a toothbrush for a penny. He has never lived that down and it has earned him the nickname ‘Toothbrush Boy.’

But he’s had plenty of other embarrassing or just plain awful moments, mostly on Twitter. In 2017, he mocked the victims of a suicide bomb attack at Manchester Arena in England. He also mocked Elon Musk when one of his SpaceX rockets exploded in 2021, even though SpaceX has launched more than 300 rockets with a 99.4 percent success rate. Recently, he threw a tantrum at Musk when someone on Twitter called Leavitt the ‘c-word,’ except Twitter users buried him by showing how many times he himself has used that insult.

Maybe Leavitt just isn’t very good at tweeting.

Yesterday, Leavitt had himself another social media hissy fit, claiming that under Musk, Twitter ‘protects Nazis,’ while claiming that previous Twitter heads Jack Dorsey and Parag Agrawal banned them.

Yes, David. That’s right. Everyone who says something you don’t like is a Nazi. This guy needs to seriously consider logging off and touching some grass for a while.

See what we mean about the toothbrush thing never dying? Nor should it.

Recommended

We think that person meant to say ‘far less,’ but the point is well taken. Leavitt just can’t stand it when people he disagrees with don’t get banned from the digital public square.

If Musk banned idiots, Leavitt, David Hogg, Victor Shi, Chris Mowrey, and Harry Sisson would be in big trouble. At least those others are far too young to know better. Leavitt is not. We’re not sure how old he is, but he’s definitely too old to be throwing tantrums on Twitter whenever his feelings get hurt.

There are plenty of leftists on Twitter these days who OPENLY declare themselves to be Communists. As a reminder, Communism has killed hundreds of millions of people over the course of its history (and yes, leftists, that was ‘real’ Communism).

Holy cow … that DOES look a lot like Leavitt, come to think of it.

So does that description.

Oh, that’s right. We left that out of Leavitt’s greatest hits. He has also complained that Musk’s ‘Nazi platform’ (to use his words) … doesn’t pay him enough. LOL.

Plenty of people wondered why he would want to stick around on Twitter if it was so evil and full of Nazis.

He’ll never leave. He can’t do without the attention. Even when that attention is just people dragging him for his horrible opinions.

But Leavitt’s biggest problem will always be his total lack of self-awareness.

Leavitt will never get it. Because the worst thing that he could ever imagine would be looking into a mirror (figuratively, that is).

We’re sure he’ll never do that. So, maybe we’ll just go with another toothbrush reminder:

Never let him forget it, Twitter. Never.

For 2024 Paris Olympics, Colombes’ historic stadium regains its former lustre

One of France’s most historic sporting venues, the Colombes stadium northwest of the French capital was the principal venue when Paris hosted the Olympic Games in 1924. After undergoing thorough renovations, the site will recover some of its former glory by again playing host to Olympic sport this summer.

The refurbished Yves-du-Manoir stadium in Colombes was inaugurated this week in great style, in the presence of Paris Olympics organising head Tony Estanguet, French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra and other dignitaries.

“It’s a wonderful nod to history, to France‘s sporting heritage,” said three-time Olympic medallist Estanguet at the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday. The Colombes stadium will be the only Paris 2024 venue to host Olympic events for a second time: at this year’s Games, the stadium will be the site of the field hockey matches.

In the run-up to the Games, the century-old stadium underwent 22 months of renovation. Two synthetic field hockey pitches were built, one with seating for 1,000 spectators. The 6,000-spectator stands on the main pitch, a vestige of the original stadium, were refitted and will be supplemented by temporary stands installed for the Games.

The nerve centre of the 1924 Olympic Games

A century ago, the Colombes stadium was the epicentre of the Paris Games, and it was even the site of the opening ceremony on July 5, 1924.  Today, it’s hard to imagine “the 20,000 spectators squeezed into the standing room” for the opening, says historian Michaël Delépine.

“It was the nerve centre of the Games. Just behind it was the first Olympic village. It was a bit spartan, with little wooden huts,” says Delépine, author of the book Le Bel Endormi: Histoire du stade de Colombes (“Sleeping beauty: History of the Colombes stadium”).

The eighth Olympiad of the modern era, in 1924, featured 3,089 athletes, 135 of whom were women, representing 44 nations and competing in 17 sports. The Colombes stadium hosted football, equestrian events, rugby, gymnastics and, above all, track and field.

At the time, it was the “Flying Finns” who dominated the middle- and long-distance races. Paavo Nurmi and his compatriot Ville Ritola performed heroically, winning nine gold medals between them.

An homage to ‘Flying Scotsman’ Eric Liddell

Perhaps the best-known rivalry from the 1924 Games was between British sprinters Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, whose story features in the 1981 movie “Chariots of Fire”.

A plaque in honour of Liddell was unveiled at the Colombes stadium this week. The French consul general in Scotland, Stéphane Pailler, who organised the ceremony, noted that “Eric Liddell left his mark on the Olympic Games because he gave up running on Sundays for religious reasons. Knowing that he would not be able to compete in the 100-meter event, for which he was one of the favourites, he decided to compete in another event, the 400 meters. Not only did he win the gold medal in this event, he also broke the world record for the discipline.”

Born in China to Scottish missionary parents, Liddell himself became a minister and returned to China, where he died in a Japanese prison camp in 1945. Stephen Shin’s 2016 film “On Wings of Eagles” recounts his tragic end. “His sporting and human legacy remains a symbol of friendship between France, Scotland and the UK. A legend. A legacy. A source of inspiration,” the new memorial at Colombes reads.

Following the success of the 1924 Games, the Colombes site – officially named the Yves-du-Manoir Olympic Stadium from 1928 in honour of a Racing Club de France rugby player who died in a plane crash – became a key venue for French sport. “Colombes attracted the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen and the most celebrated spectators,” says Delépine.

The stadium was the scene of 17 world records between 1924 and 1980, 42 French Cup finals between 1924 and 1971, and 79 matches of the French national football team. It also hosted Italy’s victory over Hungary in the 1938 football World Cup final;  the French national rugby  team’s first victory over New Zealand’s All Blacks in 1954; Pelé‘s only match on French soil with Brazil’s Seleçao in 1963; the European Cup quarter-final between Johan Cruyff’s Ajax and Benfica on March 5, 1969, with a record 63,638 spectators; and, not least, the world middle-weight boxing title match between Frenchman Jean-Claude Bouttier and Argentina’s Carlos Monzon in 1972, with 40,000 spectators in attendance.

A stadium reborn

Colombes fell from favour with the opening of the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris in 1972, but was given a second lease on life at the turn of the 2000s when Racing Club de France sold it to the local authorities, who promoted it as a venue for amateur sports.

The Colombes stadium will regain its Olympic lustre by hosting field hockey matches from July 27 to August 9. “It’s obviously moving to see this venue host another Olympiad. This stadium, which is sometimes labelled as a stadium of the past and hasn’t hosted a major event for several decades, is proving that we can write a new page, one of the finest in its history, 100 years on,” Delépine says.

After the Games, the 18-hectare site, which also includes football and rugby pitches and a running track, will also welcome the headquarters of the French field hockey federation. The new stadium is intended to benefit “local residents, with sports activities open to associations, schools and perhaps even universities”, Oudéa-Castéra said at the inauguration.

For Delépine, the story of Colombes’ Stade Yves-du-Manoir is just beginning: “We can imagine that in decades to come, there will still be sport in Colombes, and hopefully both at the elite and the amateur level.”
