SRH vs MI Highlights, IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Mumbai Indians in a run-fest at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Asked to bat first, SRH posted a mammoth 277 for three, the highest total in IPL history. Travis Head, playing his first IPL game this season, blasted a 24-ball 62, while Abhishek Sharma slammed 63 off 23 to lay the foundation. Heinrich Klassen (80) and Aiden Markram (42) provided the late charge to take the hosts past the 250-mark. In reply, MI were two wicket down at the score of 66 before Tilak Varma (64 off 34) and Naman Dhir (30 off 14) stitched a solid 84-run partnership to give the side a solid hope. However, SRH dictated terms post that and MI were eventually restricted to 246/5. (Scorecard)

Gerald Coetzee has bowled a 12-run over. It could have been a really good over but Coetzee bowled a wide delivery to Aiden Markram that went away for a four runs as well. Jasprit Bumrah, Kwena Maphaka and Gerald Coetzee all have one more overs left in their respective quotas. Hardik Pandya has already bowled his four overs. SRH 180/3 (13)

  • 20:35 (IST)

    LIVE Score: Abhishek is OUT!

Abhishek Sharma is out at the score of 62 off 23 balls. What a knock this is from the southpaw! He duly maintained the momentum despite SRH losing the wicket of Travis Head. Hyderabad’s scoring rate is 14.64 at the moment and they should aim to continue like that.

  • 20:11 (IST)

LIVE Score: Poor bowling, superb batting

21 runs came off Piyush Chawla’s first over. While the Mumbai Indians spinner bowled poorly in the over, Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma took full advantage of that. He slammed three sixes in the over. SRH are on top of this game.

    SRH 102/1 (7)

  • 20:05 (IST)

IPL 2024 Live Score: Fifty for Travis Head!

What a sensational start this is for Sunrisers Hyderabad! It is Travis Head who deserves the credit for this. He is currently batting on 59 off 20 balls after slamming his fifty off 18 balls. Mumbai Indians are clearly on the back foot, only because of this man, who is literally butchering their bowlers.

    SRH 81/1 (6)

  • 19:58 (IST)

SRH vs MI Live Score: Runs keep coming for SRH

13 runs came off the Hardik Pandya over. The Mumbai Indians captain has conceded a total of 24 runs in his first two overs while taking one wicket of Mayank Agarwal. Runs keep coming for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

    Gujarat vs Mumbai Live: SIX!

As easy as you like it. A fuller delivery from Umesh Yadav and Rohit Sharma flicked it away for a six to wide of long-on. A lot of dew has arrived and the defence of 168/6 won’t be that easy for Gujarat Titans, especially against a batting like Mumbai Indians’.

IPL 2024 Live: End of powerplay!

Hardik was late in bringing Bumrah into the attack and that saw GT taking advantage of it. But once Bumrah came to bowl in the fourth over of the innings, MI have managed to make a mini comeback.

Dream went up in smoke, but MI emerged stronger

Keerthana Shankar

Mumbai Indians has the legacy of being the most successful franchise in the Indian Premier League, the biggest T20 league in the world.

The recipe to such effective campaigns had been diligent scouting to pick uncapped players and calculated buys which added immense value to the roster. However, after a dominant run in the preceding two years, MI stumbled in the 2021 season, narrowly missing out on a playoffs spot because of an inferior net run rate compared to Kolkata Knight Riders.

When the mega auction came calling in 2022, MI’s carefully curated strategy split at the seams. The franchise had to choose among its stalwarts, retaining Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Kieron Pollard. This meant it had to let go off a few members of its core squad such as Hardik and Krunal Pandya, Quinton de Kock, Trent Boult and Ishan Kishan, though the last-named was bought back later for a whopping ₹15.25 crore. A greatly diminished purse resulted in a poor show for the remainder of the auction.

Rock bottom

The 2022 season saw MI hit rock bottom when it went home with the wooden spoon. In spite of such a disappointing campaign, there was a silver lining — the discovery of Tilak Varma, a young middle-order batter who scored 397 runs (14 matches) and emerged the star in the absence of Suryakumar.

MI had a few tough calls to make during the auction preceding IPL 2023 and it did so with renewed vigour. Once again it splurged, this time on Cameron Green, buying him for a colossal ₹17.25 crore. With 452 runs and six wickets (16 games) to his credit, the Australian all-rounder justified the move and proved a suitable replacement for the retired Pollard.

Despite the 2022 debacle, MI fans awaited the 16th season with much enthusiasm as they were promised the mouth-watering combination of Bumrah and Jofra Archer. The two have been among the best pacers of their generation and to see them bowl in tandem would have been a sight to behold. However, injuries have plagued the former since mid-2022 and though the latter did make a comeback, he was but a shadow of his former self. This not only threw MI’s bowling unit into disarray, but also the balance of the side.

Not surprisingly, MI’s performance in the first two games was nothing short of shoddy. In the opening match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis effortlessly guided their side home with 22 balls to spare. Similarly, Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane starred for long-standing rival Chennai Super Kings as it easily breached Fort Wankhede. Skipper Rohit turned up in the third game with a classy half-century, taking MI to victory against Delhi Capitals.

The biggest disappointment of the season till the fourth match, against KKR, was Suryakumar’s form. The swashbuckling batter, ranked first in ICC’s T20I rankings, was struggling to connect the ball and was even out for a golden duck while scoring only 16 runs in three games.

Tipping point

For MI, the tipping point was Suryakumar’s return to form. Despite Venkatesh Iyer’s scintillating ton, Mumbai finally flaunted its batting muscle to cruise to victory in just 17.4 overs. The outfit registered its third straight win by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad, courtesy a consummate bowling performance. Green was at the forefront with bat and ball.

The next two games — against Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans — did not end in jubilation for MI. On both occasions, Rohit’s bowlers leaked too many runs and the batters couldn’t save the side despite a valiant effort during chases.

However, in the next game versus Rajasthan Royals where Yashasvi Jaiswal took the attack to the cleaners, the MI batters clinically gunned down a mammoth target of 213. MI charted a similar course against Kings in the return fixture.

Yet, when the team met CSK in the latter’s home ground, MI once again faltered. With only four games left in the league phase, MI had to rally its troops to earn a berth in the business end. The next two matches saw MI simply blow away RCB and GT. The momentum shifted against Lucknow Super Giants where the batters narrowly missed out on taking the team over the line. Now MI’s playoffs chances did not rely only on a victory in its last game but also on the results of other fixtures.

But Green stamped his authority with a fantastic century in pursuit of 200 posted by SRH. When RCB lost its last league game to Shubman Gill’s brilliance on a rain-addled day, MI had achieved its first target. At the halfway stage, MI had won only three out of seven games. Seven more contests later, it had qualified for the playoffs in what was one of the most competitive editions ever.

MI met LSG at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in the Eliminator. Despite losing all its three previous encounters against Super Giants, this one turned out to be a walk in the park for Mumbai. Akash Madhwal demolished the Lucknow outfit, returning stupendous figures of five for five.

The next challenge was against the defending champion, Gujarat Titans, which MI had bested twice in three games before. What ensued was a breathtaking and majestic display by Gill who exposed the inconsistent bowling attack. It was ironic that Gill, whose century knocked out RCB, eliminated MI too!

MI was in cruise mode in the first half of the chase but lost its way to fall short by a distance. Once a torch-bearer for the side, Hardik Pandya became MI’s nemesis as his men extinguished the hopes of the five-time champion.

Never write off

However, MI showed time and time again why it has been a formidable side by displaying grit, resilience and determination. From lagging at the bottom to marching up the table, MI proved that it can never be written off. There have been lessons to learn from a season of contrasts.

The batters established a record for the most 200-plus totals (six times) by a team in a single edition while the bowlers conceded the most 200-plus totals (six again!) in a season. With a dynamic and deep batting line-up, if MI gives a better shape to its bowling unit, a sixth title may not be too far away.

IPL 2023: MI vs SRH | Green, Rohit keep Mumbai hopes alive for a spot in play-offs

Cameron Green’s magnificent maiden century (100 not out) and Rohit Sharma’s half century powered Mumbai Indians to a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last league match of the IPL in Mumbai on May 21.

Mumbai knocked off the target of 201 with 12 balls and eight wickets to spare to accumulate 16 points from 14 matches. But their fate will be decided after the match in Bengaluru — which is experiencing rain — between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans later in the day.

If the contest between RCB and GT is washed out, Mumbai will make it to the final four, but if the hosts win, they will qualify on the basis of better Net Run Rate. MI currently have NRR of -0.044 as against +0.180 of RCB.

With an inferior NRR, MI had the improbable task of scoring 201 in 11.4 overs or 70 balls if they had to get past RCB on the table.

Green smacked eight fours and eight sixes during his unbeaten 100 which came off just 47 balls. He added 53 runs with Suryakumar Yadav (25 not out) for the unbroken third wicket to take MI over the line.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar drew the first blood when he dismissed Ishan Kishan (14) in the third over. Rohit got a lifeline in the fifth over when Sanvir Singh dropped a difficult catch at midwicket off Nitish Kumar Reddy.

But Green provided the impetus, as his four boundaries and a couple of sixes took MI to 60/1 after the powerplay.

While Green brought up his fifty off only 20 balls, in the ninth over, Rohit was off to a modest start, hitting his first six only on the 22nd ball that he faced.

The MI skipper completed his second fifty of this IPL, off 31 balls, and his second-wicket stand with Green took the total past the 100-run mark. Soon after this, Rohit got another reprieve when Sanvir spilled a regulation catch at cover off Kartik Tyagi.

However, a sensational catch from Reddy had Mayank Dagar celebrating Rohit’s wicket wildly in the 14th over. Rohit’s 56 came off 37 balls (8x4s, 1x6s), having added 128 off 65 balls with Green.

Earlier, Unheralded Uttarakhand pacer Akash Madhwal nailed his yorkers consistently at the death as Mumbai Indians restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad to 200 for 5 in their final IPL encounter, here on Sunday.

With one eye on Bengaluru weather where RCB is taking on Gujarat Titans, Madhwal’s four-wicket haul ensured that SRH ended with at least 15 short of what could be considered a par-score on a flat Wankhede track.

This was after a century opening stand between seasoned opener Mayank Agarwal (83 off 45 balls) and rookie Vivrant Sharma (69 off 47 balls) threatened to take the game away, in the IPL here on Sunday.

The pair of Agarwal and Vivrant put on the best opening stand for SRH this season, reaching 53/0 after the powerplay without taking any undue risks, and eventually putting on 140 for the seventh century stand of this IPL.

Courtesy Madhwal’s 4 for 37, which included two lethal block-hole deliveries to clean up in-form Heinrich Klaasen (18) and Harry Brook (0), SRH managed only 26 in last three overs.

For a bowling unit that has allowed contests to drift away, here at the Wankhede Stadium on several occasions, MI made regular inroads to keep SRH within reach.

However, the task is an improbable one for MI as they will have to score 201 in just 11.4 overs, or in 70 balls, to overtake Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Net Run Rate.

Playing in his third game this season and for the first time as an opener, the left-handed Vivrant gave a fine example of himself with strokes on both the sides of the wickets.

Vivrant struck seven fours and a six to bring up his maiden IPL half-century in the 10th over, as SRH cruised in the first half of the contest unscathed and unperturbed by MI’s bowlers.

Agarwal too ended his drought, hitting a six and a four off Jason Behrendorff in the 13th over to bring up his first fifty of this season, and celebrated with a gesture that batters usually do upon reaching the three-figure mark – taking off the helmet and arms stretched wide.

On a benign pitch with extreme hot and humid conditions, there was also not much that the Mumbai bowlers could do, on what also has been batting-friendly surface here.

With no movement or turn off the surface, the MI bowlers had to contend with bowling disciplined line and lengths, and to their credit, they never really allowed the SRH openers to get away.

The first breakthrough came in the 14th over when Madhwal had Vivrat caught at deep mid-wicket, with his 69 off 47 balls (9 fours, 2 sixes) being the highest score since the first IPL for any Indian player in a debut innings.

Madhwal continued to use the short ball well and in the 17th over, he had Agarwal caught behind for 83, which came off 46 balls including eight fours and four sixes.

Games like that happen, we made some errors and we accepted that. It’s important how you come back from that situation, that’s critical. We had a good chat and hopefully we can turn things around. We’ve got 2 changes – Hrithik Shokeen misses out from the last game. Kumar Kartikeya is going to play. Jofra is not well. Riley is back.”

GT vs MI, Live Score: Pitch report

“The highest number of sixes on an average has been hit at this venue along with Eden Gardens. This isn’t the smallest of venues either. Square boundaries – 63 metres and 68 metres, straight down the ground it’s 74 metres. It’s unusually humid here. On the wicket, it’s moist, not tacky in any way but certainly got some moisture in it. Don’t be surprised if the fastmen do come into play in the powerplay. Even though it’s red soil, I think it’ll bounce traditionally but it’ll just grip a little bit because of the extra moisture in it. The batters through the middle will be finding it very difficult this evening. Dew hasn’t had a massive effect so far. It’s overcast, chances are it (dew) might not have tonight either. Six out of six games – chasing teams have won.”

GT vs MI, Live Score: Fiery batting order of GT

While Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill have scored runs at the top and Hardik top-scored in their last match, GT were about 10-15 runs short against LSG, mainly due to their slow batting in middle overs, something the team will need to address.

  • 17:28 (IST)

Led by Rashid Khan, Gujarat’s spin department looks potent with fellow Afghan wrist spinner Noor Ahmad and Jayant Thakur delivering under pressure against LSG.

GT vs MI, Live Score: Mohammed Shami’s quality bowling

  • 16:52 (IST)

GT vs MI, Live Score: Strong batting unit of MI

While Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan have given a good start to the team on most occasions, Suryakumar Yadav’s return to form is a big positive for MI, who have been served well by the overseas duo of Cameron Green and Tim David.

  • 16:51 (IST)

GT vs MI, Live Score: Impressive bowling from the spinners

  • 16:48 (IST)

GT vs MI, Live Score: Below par show from MI pacers

  • 16:33 (IST)

GT vs MI, Live Score: MI’s poor death bowling

Mumbai were let down by their death over bowling as they conceded 96 runs in the final five overs to allow PBKS post 214 for 8, and they will have to sort out their bowling ahead of the GT clash.

  • 16:29 (IST)

Sachin Tendulkar Celebrates 50th Birthday: The A To Z Of ‘Master Blaster’ | Cricket News

To the Indians, Sachin Tendulkar is the man for “all seasons”. It has been 10 years since he bid farewell to international cricket, leaving the nation full of moist eyes. As India’s favourite son completes his 50th birthday, PTI chronicles his life and times in an alphabetical manner. It could be people, places and events related to the great man, which have dominated our lives for a better part of three-and-a-half decades.

A (Anjali, Arjun, Ajit) As Sachin Tendulkar maintains, better-half Anjali is the “best partnership” of his life. Son Arjun is carrying forward the Tendulkar legacy on the cricket pitch. And, had it not been for brother Ajit’s efforts, who knows we would been deprived of the batting wizardry of the man from Bandra.

B (Bristol) The venue will always have an emotional connect with Tendulkar. It was here that he scored 140 against Kenya but, more importantly, it came less than a week after the death of his father, Professor Ramesh Tendulkar.

C (Centurion) The venue in South Africa where Tendulkar perhaps played one of his greatest ODI knocks — 98 versus Pakistan during the 2003 World Cup. The six off pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar over point will always be remembered by fans.

D (‘The Don’) Sir Don Bradman will forever remain the ‘Greatest’ with his average of 99.94. But when ‘The Don’ said the “little fella’s” batting style resembled his, the debate on contemporary cricket’s best batter ended there.

E (Eden Gardens) Wankhede, where Tendulkar played his 200th Test, might be his soul but Eden Gardens, where he played his 199th game, remains one of his favourite grounds. Tendulkar the bowler attained superstardom when he bowled the epic last over in the Hero Cup semi-final against South Africa in 1993. India managed to defend 195 by restricting the Proteas to 193/9, with Tendulkar conceding just three runs in the 50th over.

F (Ferrari) Tendulkar’s favourite car and also his favourite Formula One team. He was the proud owner of a gleaming red Ferrari back in the day when the company decided to present him one in 2002 for equalling the record of 29 Test centuries by Sir Don.

G (Gujranwala)Tendulkar ended his ODI career with 49 hundreds but the first of his 463 games was played in this Pakistani city. How much did he score on debut? Well, he didn’t trouble the scorers.

H (Harris Shield) The famous Mumbai Inter-school cricket tournament, where the world first came to know about Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar after his 664-run stand with Vinod Kambli.

I (Inzamam ul Haq) The former Pakistan captain had an interesting story to tell. His son Ibtisam was a big fan of Tendulkar. During the 2004 historic tour of Pakistan, Inzamam actually brought his school-going son during an Indian practice session to introduce him to Tendulkar.

J (John McEnroe) Tendulkar is a tennis buff and during his teenage years, he used to be a big fan of American John McEnroe. Old-timers say that, like McEnroe in the early 80s, the curly-haired Indian genius could be seen moving around his housing society wearing a red headband.

K (Vinod Kambli) Tendulkar’s childhood buddy, Kambli was his partner in that world-record stand of 664 runs in Harris Shield. Kambli’s famous comment on Tendulkar is still one of the most quotable quotes: “Sachin went to the top riding a lift. I had to take the staircase”.

L (Brian Lara) The debate on who between the two was the bigger cricketer will never cease. But to enjoy Sachin Tendulkar’s class, one also needs to appreciate Brian Lara’s panache. The two lit up the 90s like never before and the mutual respect was there for everyone to see. They brought so much grace into rivalry.

M (Glenn McGrath)Tendulkar versus McGrath was the contest that made Test cricket so lively. The two master operators gave it their all when they were competing against each other. Not even an inch of territory was conceded, and their duels in the 1990s and 2000s remain one of the most fascinating rivalries of all time.

N (Narsingh Deonarine) Narsingh Deonarine’s international career is nothing to write home about but the West Indian cricketer will forever cherish being the last-ever bowler to dismiss Tendulkar in international cricket — during the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium in 2013. Sachin was dismissed for 74 by the off-spinner in a match India won by an innings and 126 runs.

O (Old Trafford) No cricket venue in the world is more dear to Tendulkar’s heart than Old Trafford in Manchester. This is the ground where he scored the first of his 100 international hundreds. The unbeaten 119 enabled India to save the second Test of the 1990 series against England.

P (Peshawar) It was the venue where world cricket first took note of the teenage Indian prodigy who hit 53 off just 18 balls. It was an exhibition match curtailed due to rain, but Sachin played a T20-style innings to regale the spectators and make a lasting impression on them.

Q (Abdul Qadir) When we talk about that Peshawar game, can Abdul Qadir be far behind? On several occasions, Tendulkar has recounted the instance where Qadir tried to sledge him after he had launched into Mushtaq Ahmed. “Bacche ko kya marte ho, humein maar ke dikhao? The rest is history as Tendulkar clobbered Qadir for 28 runs in an over.

R (Rahul Dravid) An excellent batter in his own right, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar are the most successful Test-batting pair with 20 century-plus stands between them and 6,920 cumulative runs in partnerships.

S (Shivaji Park Gymkhana) This is where it all started. Under the watchful eyes of Ramakant Achrekar, Tendulkar learnt the ropes of the game at this very ground, considered to be the cradle of Mumbai cricket.

T (Toronto)The Skating and Curling Club ground at Toronto will always be special for Tendulkar. It was here that he got his first ‘Man of the Match’ award as captain after scoring an unbeaten 89 off 89 balls in a winning cause against Pakistan.

U (U2) Tendulkar is a Lata Mangeshkar devotee but when it comes to English songs, he is a big fan of world famous Irish rock band U2. His favourite U2 song is “Where Streets Have No Name”.

V (Virat Kohli) The day Tendulkar retired, Virat Kohli gifted his chain, which was his father’s memory, to Tendulkar and sang “Tujh Mein Rabh Dikhtar Hai” inside the Wankhede dressing room.

W (Wimbledon) A tournament Tendulkar has hardly missed. The legend makes an annual pilgrimage to SW19 and can be seen sitting in one of the VIP zones watching marquee Centre Court matches.

X (St Xavier’s School) It was this particular school against whom Tendulkar and Kambli, playing for Sharadashram Vidyamandir, scored 664 runs in Harris Shield.

Y (Yorkshire) English county side Yorkshire has been in the midst of several racism allegations but in 1990, they received Tendulkar with open arms. The Indian icon was the first overseas player recruited by the club.

Z (Zimbabwe) Zimbabwe bowler Henry Olonga had rattled Tendulkar with a bouncer that the Indian fended and was out caught by close-in fielders during a league game of the 1998 Champions Trophy in Sharjah. However, in the final the icon scored 124 runs as India won by 10 wickets with 120 balls to spare.

IPL Turns ‘Sweet 16’: Dhoni’s CSK, Rohit’s MI Remain Premier Contenders As Kohli’s RCB Eye Fresh Start | Cricket News

The never-ending speculations about Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s impending ‘last dance’, Virat Kohli’s endless pursuit of an elusive silverware and Rohit Sharma’s customary nonchalance are things that make the IPL starting Friday a heady cocktail of cricket and entertainment. Megastars Dhoni, Kohli and Rohit have been the IPL’s driving force in the past 15 seasons, getting the cricket crazy Indian fans hooked on the event for nearly two months every year. As it enters the 16th season, innovations introduced in the form of potential game changer like the ‘Impact Player’ rule, DRS on wides and waist-high no balls, and two broadcasting giants locked in an ugly war of ‘TV vs Digital’ act as ingredients garnishing the mouth-watering dish, which will be devoured by millions for more than 50 days.

However, the product will remain the driving force and players the main stakeholders, as the likes of Dhoni, Kohli and Rohit set the narratives for their respective franchises with amazing fan bases.

Nearing 42, Dhoni has defied the law of diminishing returns when it comes to his manic following among CSK fans, who thronged the Chepauk to see their ‘Thala’ hit towering sixes at his spiritual home.

They say it will be his last year in the ‘canary yellow’ jersey, but when it comes to MSD, never say never. Even Rohit agrees with that, and won’t be surprised if his “captain” continues playing till 45.

Having finished outside the play-offs in 2022, Dhoni would like to equal Mumbai Indians’ record with five titles, and he knows how to get the best out of the resources available at his disposal.

He will have Ben Stokes in his roster to give him the firepower in batting — in powerplay and at the back-end.

Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad both understand the grammar of IPL cricket and Ambati Rayudu with the willow and Deepak Chahar with the white Kookaburra have all been there and done that.

CSK have never been a grooming school. There it’s more about the finished product or those in whom the skipper sees the potential, like he saw in Simarjeet Singh last year, or someone like Matheesa Pathirana, who could be an ‘Impact Player’ if the CSK begin with three foreigners. Stokes, Moeen Ali and Conway look sure-shot starters as of now.

For Rohit, it will be a season in which he would like to sing the redemption song. Rohit has a casual exterior but scratch the surface, and he can be as intense as anybody, and being the most successful skipper in the history of IPL, losing isn’t an option.

Before last year, Rohit never knew what it feels to be the wooden spooner. This season however, Mumbai Indians appear to be the team to beat, at least on paper.

A lot will depend on the skipper’s own batting form and the two marquee men in Ishan Kishan and the world’s No. 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav, who would like to brush off the three first-ball ducks against Australia recently as an aberration in an otherwise sterling journey.

Jofra Archer’s presence does boost the pace attack, but Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, to some extent, nullifies the advantage.

But what MI is doing is to prepare a team for the next five years with young guns like Dewald Brevis, Tim David, Cameron Green, Tilak Verma, Hrithik Shokeen and Kumar Kartikeya set to serve them for the longest time. This core will be a formidable one in the years to come.

Just like Dhoni and Rohit, Kohli has landed up in every IPL with fire in his belly, but the rub of the green hasn’t gone his way.

He has had a 973-run season, in 2016, something that will be difficult to surpass even in these day and age where the shelf life of records is too less. He has played a few finals but, as far as winning the title is concerned, the IPL has had a fickle relationship with one of India’s greatest batters.

He is no longer the skipper and is probably in the best mental phase that he has been in the past three to four years.

The hunger is intact, but the desperation isn’t there. The swagger remains, but the aggression is no longer there to be found.

With Michael Bracewell, Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik ready to do the heavy-lifting, Kohli will be free to play his own game and also help skipper Faf du Plessis in putting his best foot forward.

This season holds special significance for Hardik Pandya. Having led Gujarat Titans to title triumph in only their inaugural year, the 16th IPL will be a platform for Pandya to soar higher and higher with bigger ambitions.

With coach Ashish Nehra for company, he would want the Rashid Khans, Mohammed Shamis and the Shubman Gills to maintain the tempo of last year from start to finish. An encore would certainly make him Rohit’s heir apparent in the ODI format post the World Cup.

The only tactical shift is the absence of Lockie Ferguson and the jury is still out on whether trading him to bring in Shivam Mavi was a good choice or not.

For Aiden Markram, it will be an onerous task to lift a perennially under-performing Sunrisers Hyderabad.

However, the composition is better compared to previous years with talented Indian players like Mayank Agarwal, Rahul Tripathi and Abhishek Sharma in their ranks. Glenn Phillips and Harry Brook are among some top overseas batting recruits.

However, bowling remains a worry with Umran Malik, now well studied by analysts, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar past his prime. A lot will depend on whether SRH are able to use their fourth foreign player as per conditions. There is Marco Jansen with his left-arm seamers and Adil Rashid with his wrist spinners.

Punjab Kings under Shikhar Dhawan is another team that has never believed in continuity and never got results since their runners-up finish in 2014.

They have kept on changing captains, unceremoniously dumping coaches after one bad season, and the team never had any stability. This time they have got Sam Curran in excess of USD 2 million dollars.

A good start is key but not getting Liam Livingstone (injury), Kagiso Rabada (national duty) in the first couple of games could upset the team’s tempo.

Save Arshdeep Singh, the Indian pace unit lacks quality and the PBKS could again be out of the play-off race. The team simply doesn’t inspire confidence and the composition indicates lack of proper homework.

KL Rahul is having a nightmarish 2023 and a good IPL can raise his profile which has been on a downward spiral despite him being a top performer in the league. Rahul’s captaincy has been devoid of any tangible improvisation and his style of run gathering is archaic.

LSG have a balanced team and in Gautam Gambhir a tactician par excellence, one who could safely be called the non-playing captain. The presence of utility players like Krunal Pandya, Deepak Hooda and Ayush Badoni in the middle-order adds a lot of depth, while Mark Wood’s 150 click thunderbolts will be a nightmare for the opposition.

Nicholas Pooran, who was paid an astronomical Rs 16 crore, would look to justify that billing after a forgettable last season with SRH.

When it comes to remote-control captaincy, there can’t be a better example than KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit, who will have to do all the planning and plotting on behalf of Nitish Rana, who will be leading a side that isn’t looking very strong in the absence of regular skipper Shreyas Iyer.

In fact, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine’s form will dictate how far KKR progress.

Ditto for Delhi Capitals, who will find it difficult to have anyone get remotely close to Rishabh Pant’s impact, even though David Warner wouldn’t mind winning a second IPL trophy.

Amid all the chaos in some teams, Rajasthan Royals look the most sorted outfit. The world’s most dangerous T20 hitter Jos Buttler, wily wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, and the best cricketing brain, R Ashwin, will look to ensure that the legend of skipper Sanju Samson grows exponentially.
