Asian IPOs In U.S. Poised To Increase As Region’s Economies Recover, Nasdaq Vice Chairman Says

In 2019, the year before Covid upended global travel and business, the Nasdaq attracted 33 listings from Asia-Pacific companies. All but five were from China, underscoring the country’s heft as the world’s No. 2 economy and the strength of its tech sector. Chinese Internet billionaires that have listed their main business on the Nasdaq over the years include Robin Li, chairman of Baidu and Richard Liu of JD.com.

This year, with Asia helping to lead a global economic recovery from Covid, the number of listings from the region may beat that pre-Covid number, Vice Chairman Robert McCooey, Jr. said in an interview. “Our pipeline is super strong,” McCooey said via Zoom, noting 94 active “F-1” filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission by Asia-Pacific businesses aiming to go public.

China businesses and entrepreneurs that led the way in 2019 may have to share the stage with those from other Asia nations this year, however, McCooey said. Though it’s impossible to say for sure how many will come through, McCooey noted that only about half of those F-1 filers are from Chinese companies.

“If you rewind the clock three-four-five years, 80% of them would have been Chinese and only a small number from other parts of Asia,” including Singapore, South Korea and Japan, he said. “The fact that 50% of them come from China is great, but I think it does show where the market has shifted over the past few years,” McCooey said. “We’re casting a broader net here that includes China, but also looking at Asia (overall).”

To be sure, the Nasdaq is mostly for U.S. companies – they account for about 80% of the 4,000 businesses that trade there. Yet the remaining 20% — or about 800 — are based overseas. Among the largest are JD.com and Trip.com from China. Even amid the pandemic last year, a total of 48 international listings came to Nasdaq (including SPAC IPOs), 30 of which were from the Asia-Pacific. Some of biggest listings in 2022 were Gogoro, a Taiwan operator of a battery-swapping platform and scooter maker, and Atour Lifestyle Holdings, a mainland China hotel chain operator.

There remains an international listing backlog this year in part due to the difficulties of traveling during the pandemic, said McCooey, a 15-year Nasdaq veteran who oversees IPOs from Asia and Latin America. A shadow over China fundraising lifted in December when the U.S. regulators said they had reached an agreement over auditing of Chinese-listed firms that had caused new listings from the country to grind to a near halt. This week, Hesai Group, a supplier of sensors for self-driving vehicles whose investors include Baidu and smartphone maker Xiaomi, is expected to list. So far, there have been four other international listings on the Nasdaq this year, three of which were from the Asia-Pacific: Cetus Capital Acquisition, Quantasing Group and Lichen China.

Aside from the easing of Covid-related restrictions in China itself, hopes for a recovery in Chinese listings at the Nasdaq got a boost when China’s New York consulate chief Huang Ping came to ring an opening bell last month to mark the Lunar New Year.

Whether China gains actually materialize will also depend in part on confidence among listees and investors alike, he said. “Success begets success,” said 57-year-old McCooey. “That’s what my dad used to always say.” The more companies that go public and are successful, the more confidence others will have to follow them and go down that path, he said.

One further challenge this spring for China firms and their underwriters will be fallout from the U.S. downing of the suspected spy balloon this month, stoking Cold War fears. McCooey said he didn’t expect an impact on listings. “Tensions between the U.S. and China have gone on for decades,” he said. “They just get heightened in the press sometimes more during certain periods.”

Also potentially poised for a good year in 2023, believes McCooey: U.S. listings by companies from Southeast Asia. “There’s been a tremendous amount of growth in the companies in the region,” he said. “Companies have now grown to a size and a scale” and in industries associated with the Nasdaq such as technology, healthcare, consumer logistics, and robotics, McCooey said. “They’re interested in the U.S. market and they’re growing.”

Among the 18 Asia-Pacific companies to file F-1s since December, four have come from Singapore, including CytoMed Therapeutics, a biotech firm, and IMMRSIV, a software company.

“There’s been a lot of money that has left other parts of Asia (and) come into Singapore. It’s looked at as kind of the Switzerland of Southeast Asia and warm and welcoming,” he said. “A lot of people are comfortable there, a lot of businesses are comfortable there, and the business climate is good there. There just are a lot of factors that are working in (Singapore’s) favor right now. And then obviously, with some of the geopolitical tensions that have gone on, companies (will) try to remove themselves from that.

Although India hasn’t accounted for many international Nasdaq issuers of late, owing to restrictions by the country on direct overseas listings (companies have to list at home first), McCooey said he’s also optimistic that more businesses from that country will also seek to tap U.S. markets.

“I’ve been a huge believer in India for years,” said McCooey, a graduate of College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. “It’s just too large, and an amazing market for us not to think about it that way. It just takes a while.”

Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023: India’s Dominance At Home, Mixed Results Down Under | Cricket News

The latest edition of the Border Gavaskar Trophy will kick start on February 9 in Nagpur. While Team India aim to retain the trophy after a historic win in Down Under, Australia will look to win their first Test series in India since 2004-05. Instituted in 1996 and named after legendary batters Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar, the Border Gavaskar Trophy has had its moments of glory, where history was rewritten, records were shattered, and careers were molded.

Impregnable Home Turf

The inaugural one-match series in 1996 began on a winning note for India, as they beat Australia on the back of Nayan Mongia‘s 152. This was also Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar‘s first match as Test captain.

The 1996 series also heralded the era of India’s domination against Australia at home. India have won 16 out of the 25 Tests at home since 1996, losing only 5 and drawing the rest.

For some perspective: In the previous 25 Test matches played at home, India won only five Tests.

Team India’s home dominance peaked during the 2012-13 series, when the MS Dhoni-led team whitewashed the visitors 4-0 for the first time. Team India’s domination comes out even stronger if one considers the period between 2005 and 2017, when they lost only one Test match – Pune, 2017.

The only time Team India failed to defend their home turf was in 2004, when they lost 2-1.

Australian batters have struggled on the turning tracks of India – from Ricky Ponting, who is the second-highest run scorer in the tournament, in the 2000s to David Warner in the present. The turning tracks did not help spin wizard Shane Warne either, who averaged 43 in India. The only exception is Nathan Lyon, who has scalped 34 wickets at a healthy average of 30.

Mixed Fortunes Down Under

While Team India have been dominant at home, they have had mixed fortunes Down Under. Between 1999-2000 (the first overseas Border Gavaskar Series) and 2014-15, India won just two Test matches – Adelaide, 2003 and Perth, 2008.

India also suffered two humiliating whitewashes in Australia – 1999-2000 and 2011-12. The latter series witnessed the decline of India’s batting ‘quartet’ – Sehwag, Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman. Eventually, Dravid and Laxman never played an international game for India.

The 2014-15 series saw the emergence of Kohli as a captain-batter, but it is now remembered more for the unexpected Test retirement of Dhoni. India lost the series 2-0, both Kohli and Dhoni losing and drawing one Test each.

However, under Kohli, India scripted history in 2018-19 as they became the first Asian team to win a series in Australia. The heroes of this unprecedented feat were Cheteshwar Pujara – 521 runs – and Jasprit Bumrah – 21 wickets. However, Australia were without the services of their two biggest batters, Steve Smith and Warner.

Two years later, India made a dramatic comeback in the series after a humiliating defeat in the first Test at Adelaide. This Test gained infamy as Team India were bowled out for 36, their lowest ever team total. The next three Tests were nothing short of a fairy tale for India.

Despite missing the services of Kohli, battling searing pace bowling, and a growing injury list, India won the series 2-1. The architects of the series victory were Ajinkya Rahane (112 in Melbourne), Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin in the drawn Sydney Test, and Rishabh Pant in the historic Brisbane Test. In winning the Brisbane Test, India became the first team in 32 years to win at the ‘The Gabba’.

Career Turning Point For Legends

The Border Gavaskar Trophy has been a witness to individual brilliance on numerous occasions, which not only rescued the team from precarious situations but also resurrected failing careers.

Long before VVS Laxman became an “Australia-specialist”, scoring over 2,400 runs and hitting six out of his 17 centuries, he was struggling to keep his place in the playing XI. In the first four years of his career, he had scored 626 runs at a paltry average of 25. But things changed dramatically for him in the second innings of the third Test in 2000, when he hit a quickfire 167 off 198 balls. Unfortunately, India faced an innings defeat but Laxman had made his mark in international cricket.

Laxman’s elegant wrist play was once again at play in the 2001 Kolkata Test, when he teamed up with Rahul Dravid to rescue India while following-on. His 281 along with Dravid’s 180 helped India set a target of 384. Harbhajan Singh’s six-wicket haul then gave the finishing touches to a famous Indian victory.

Harbhajan Singh took 32 wickets in the 2001 series – the most by an Indian bowler in a three-match series. The series turned out to be a turning point for Singh, who went on to take over 400 wickets and became the mainstay of Indian bowling attack for a decade.

While Virat Kohli – he is considered the successor to Tendulkar’s legacy – had always been known as a great Test prospect, it wasn’t before the Australia tour of 2014-15 that he came into his own. Captaining two Tests in the absence of Dhoni, Kohli scored 692 runs in the four-Test series. His captaincy debut was a blockbuster – 115 and 141 – and set the stage for his successful reign as a captain.

Records Galore For India

With 3,262 runs at an average of 56.24, Tendulkar continues to be the top scorer in the series. No one among the current crop of players comes closer.

Among the current players, Pujara with 1,893 runs is close to crossing the 2,000-run mark in the 2023 series. He needs to play two more Tests to complete 100 Tests, only the 13th Indian player to achieve this feat.

Kohli has the opportunity to improve his numbers on home turf. In 11 Test innings in India, Kohli has scored just 330 runs at an average of 33.

With 111 wickets, Anil Kumble is the leading wicket taker in the tournament. His compatriot Ashwin is fourth on the list with 89 wickets. He needs one more wicket to complete 450 Test wickets and become the second-fastest to the milestone after Muttiah Muralitharan.

Ravindra Jadeja, who is looking to make a comeback after injury, is just eight short of completing 250 Test wickets. In doing so, he will also become the latest entrant into the ‘250 wickets and 2,500 runs’ club.

Rohit Sharma will be playing his first Border Gavaskar Trophy on home turf, nearly a decade after his debut. He has played seven Tests against Australia, scoring just 408 runs at an average of 31.

China wants to reduce India’s influence in Indian Ocean region, say papers submitted at DGPs’ meet

Chinese activities and influence in India’s extended neighbourhood have grown increasingly with the sole purpose of keeping New Delhi constrained and occupied in facing the resultant challenges, according to papers submitted at a key security meeting in New Delhi.

The papers presented by Indian Police Service (IPS) officers at the just concluded conference of DGPs and IGPs submit that by providing huge amounts of money in the name of loans for developmental works in Southeast and South Asia, China wants to reduce India’s influence in the Indian Ocean region and force resolution of bilateral issues on Beijing’s terms.

Explained | China’s moves in the Indian Ocean

The three-day annual conference was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and about 350 top police officers of the country.

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), infrastructure related investments in India’s neighbouring countries through easy loans, hot borders and Line of Actual Control (LAC) are some of the tools Beijing has been using effectively, the papers say.

The last two-and-a-half decades have seen Chinese economic and military growth at a massive scale and Chinese activities and influence in India’s extended neighbourhood have grown proportionately, they find.

“All this is being done with the aim to keep India constrained and occupied in facing the resultant challenges, force resolution of bilateral issues on its own terms, modulate India’s growth story, leaving it [China] free to achieve its aim of becoming not only Asia’s pre-eminent power, but a global superpower,” according to the papers.

The papers on the subject “Chinese influence in the neighbourhood and implications for India” were written by some top IPS officers of the country.

China has become far more attentive to its South Asian periphery, moving beyond commercial and development engagements to more far-reaching political and security ones, according to one of the papers.

China is investing huge amounts of money in the neighbouring countries of India mainly Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka in the name of infrastructure development and other financial assistance, it said.

Without exception, India’s neighbouring countries have described China as a crucial development partner, either as a funder or in providing technological and logistical support. Additionally, it is the biggest trading partner in goods for Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and the second-largest for Nepal and the Maldives, it said.

“However, the economic element is increasingly intertwined with political, government, and people-to-people aspects of these relationships,” it said.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created opportunities for China to work directly with these countries in new ways such as the provision of medical equipment, biomedical expertise, and capital for coronavirus-related needs, it said.

These developments demonstrate that China’s presence in Southeast and South Asia is no longer predominantly economic but involves a greater, multidimensional effort to enhance its posture and further its long-term strategic interests in the region, the paper said.

“China is highly ambitious about achieving its regional power status in the Indian Ocean region. To do so Beijing wants to contain India which is the only threat before China in this region,” according to an analyst.

Radicalisation of Muslim youth a major challenge for national security

Radicalisation, particularly of the Muslim youth, is one of the key challenges for national security and it is important to take moderate Muslim leaders and clerics into confidence to counter radical organisations, according to papers submitted at the security meeting.

The papers noted that the rise in religious fundamentalism in India is primarily due to high level of indoctrination, easy availability of modern means of communication, including encrypted form, cross-border terrorism and Pakistan concentrating on encouraging these radical groups.

“Radicalisation, particularly of the Muslim youth, is one of the important challenges for national security of our country. Several radical Muslim organisations are active in India, which indulge in organised radicalisation of the Muslim youth. They have inherent tendency to corrupt minds of Muslim community, push them on the violent path and work against composite culture,” the papers noted.

In view of this, tackling radical organisations become imperative and priority in the interests of social harmony and national security.

These organisations are engaged in radical interpretation of Islamic scriptures and concepts.

They also create a sense of victimhood in Muslim psyche. In pursuit of puritanical Islam, their preaching go against modern values such as democracy and secularism.

In India, the papers revealed, the recently banned Popular Front of India (PFI), another banned group SIMI, Wahdat-e-Islami, Islamic Youth Federation, Hizb-ut Tahreer and Al-Ummah are some Muslim organisations, which fit in this category.

“Among these Muslim organisations, the PFI was the most potent radical organisation. It evolved as a national-level organisation since formation in 2006 by merging of three South India based outfits,” the papers noted.

Rise in religious fundamentalism is due to history and attending continuous religious programmes such as Dars-eQuran, Ahle-Hadith etc., high level of indoctrination, modern means of communication viz. internet, mail in coded and encrypted form, the papers said.

The cross-border terrorism and its post effects, Pakistan concentrating on encouraging these radical organisations, Muslim boys going to the Gulf countries and coming back with money and radical ideologies are some other reasons for the rise of radicalisation, according to the papers said.

The writers noted that terrorist radicalisation is a dynamic process whereby an individual comes to accept terrorist violence as a possible, perhaps even legitimate, course of action and each case of terrorist radicalisation results from the unique intersection of an enabling environment and the personal trajectory and psychology of a given individual.

Suggesting remedies, the papers noted that to tackle radical Organisations, multi-pronged approach is required, including monitoring of covert activities, creation of detailed databases on leaders and other entities of interests.

“Security agencies and state police need to be sensitised about threat to national security from radical organisations and in order to counter radical organisations, it is equally important to take moderate Muslim leaders and clerics into confidence.

“Emphasis should be given to identify and monitoring the hotspots of radicalisation and prior analysis must be done about the potentiality of a radical organisation in spreading extremism and involvement of its cadres in violent action and accordingly the plan of action should be initiated,” the papers noted.
