“This Dig At Our Country And PM…”: Virender Sehwag, Other Cricket Stars Fume Over Maldives Row | Cricket News

The controversial comments made against India by public figures in Maldives have left Indians fuming. Even renowned cricketers like Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, etc. have criticized the ‘racist’ remarks against India and encouraged fellow citizens to explore the beauty of the Indian beaches. The reactions come amid the row over derogatory and ‘anti-India’ remarks made by Maldives minister, leaders and other public figures after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the union territory of Lakshadweep.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag gave a sharp reply to the unwarranted comments against India and PM Modi.

“Whether it be the beautiful beaches of Udupi , Paradise Beach in Pondi, Neil and Havelock in Andaman, and many other beautiful beaches throughout our country, there are so many unexplored places in Bharat which have so much potential with some infrastructure support. Bharat is knowing for converting all Aapda into Avsar, and this dig at our country and our Prime Minister by Maldives ministers is a great Avsar for Bharat to create just the necessary infrastructure to make them attractive to tourists and boost our economy. Please do name your favourite unexplored beautiful places,” he wrote on X.

Ex-Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan wrote, “Having traveled the world since I was 15, every new country I visit reinforces my belief in the exceptional service offered by Indian hotels and tourism. While respecting each country’s culture, it’s disheartening to hear negative remarks about my homeland’s extraordinary hospitality.”

Former India batter Suresh Raina urged Indians to unite against Maldives’s hate and explore Indian Islands. Raina said it’s upsetting to see such criticism from the Maldives, especially because India contributes greatly to their economy, crisis management, and many other areas.

He stated now is the moment to explore the Indian Islands.

“I saw remarks from prominent public figures in the Maldives, expressing hateful and racist comments directed towards Indians. It’s disheartening to witness such negativity, especially considering that India contributes significantly to their economy, crisis management and so many other aspects. Having visited the Maldives multiple times and always expressing admiration for the destination’s beauty, I believe it’s crucial to prioritize our self-respect,” he said in a post on X.

“In light of recent events, let’s unite and choose to #ExploreIndianIslands, supporting our own vibrant tourism industry. It’s time to celebrate and appreciate the rich experiences that our own has to offer,” Raina added.

Notably, former cricketer Aakash Chopra took to social media to voice his opinion on the matter.

“‘India Out’ was a part of the manifesto. Maldives voted for it. Now, it’s up to us, Indians, to choose wisely. I know that my family will. Jai Hind,” Akash Chopra wrote on X.

Earlier, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar also took to the social media platform and lauded Sindhudurg, the coastal town in Maharashtra and its beautiful coastlines and pristine islands.

“250 days since we rang in my 50th birthday in Sindhudurg! The coastal town offered everything we wanted, and more. Gorgeous locations combined with wonderful hospitality left us with a treasure trove of memories. India is blessed with beautiful coastlines and pristine islands. With our “Atithi Devo Bhava” philosophy, we have so much to explore, so many memories waiting to be created,” Sachin posted on Sunday.

PM Modi visited the Union Territory of Lakshadweep on January 2 and shared several pictures, including an ‘exhilarating experience’ after he tried his hand at snorkelling.

In a series of posts on X, PM Modi shared pictures of the white beaches and the pristine blue skies and the ocean, and tagged them with a message that read, “For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list.”

“Recently, I had the opportunity to be among the people of Lakshadweep. I am still in awe of the stunning beauty of its islands and the incredible warmth of its people. I had the opportunity to interact with people in Agatti, Bangaram and Kavaratti. I thank the people of the islands for their hospitality. Here are some glimpses, including aerial glimpses from Lakshadweep,” PM Modi posted on X.

He added, “During my stay, I also tried snorkelling – what an exhilarating experience it was! For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list”.

Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over Rs 1,150 crore in Agatti on Tuesday.

Notably, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu is considered close to China and he even ran the electoral campaign on the line of ‘India Out’. After coming to power, he has taken several steps that have been unconventional from the point of India-Maldives ties.

From Sachin Tendulkar To R Ashwin, Cricket Stars React As Glenn Maxwell Registers “Best ODI Knock” | Cricket News

Following Glenn Maxwell’s historic double ton, cricketers from all over the world took to social media to express their admiration for what was possibly one of the best ODI innings ever. Maxwell’s historic double ton, the first-ever by an Australian in ODIs, lifted Aussies from a troublesome situation at 91/7 during a run-chase of 292 against Afghanistan and helped them script a miraculous three-wicket win at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Maxwell’s Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise drew comparisons with Virat Kohli’s 82* against Pakistan at Melbourne in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, which also came during a tense run-chase of 160.

Indian legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar called the innings the “best ODI knock”.

“A wonderful knock by @IZadran18to put Afghanistan in a good position. They started well in the 2nd half and played good cricket for 70 overs but the last 25 overs from @Gmaxi_32 was more than enough to change their fortune. From Max pressure to Max performance! This has been the best ODI knock I’ve seen in my life. #AUSvAFG,” tweeted Sachin.

“2022, MCG 2023, Wankhede Two of the greatest knocks in a chase you’ll ever see #PlayBold #ViratKohli #GlennMaxwell@imVkohli @Gmaxi_32,” tweeted RCB.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes was also in awe of his arch-rivals’ dominance after a long period of being under pressure of Afghanistan bowlers.

“My goodness Maxi,” he tweeted.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag also lauded Maxwell for batting like “a man possessed”.

“Saw this coming. 200 in a run-chase, One of the all time great one day innings by Maxwell. @Gmaxi_32 was a man possessed and great support by @patcummins30. An innings to remember for a long long time. #AUSvsAFG,” tweeted Sehwag.

Shoaib Akhtar, the legendary Pakistan pacer, lauded Maxwell for his “physical and mental genius”.

“It was an honor witnessing this mental & physical genius of @Gmaxi_32. Its one of all-time great ODI innings. #AUSvsAFG,” tweeted Akhtar.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan also rated the innings as the best ODI innings.

“The GREATEST ODI innings of time @Gmaxi_32.. You could say the GREATEST innings of all time .. #CWC2023 #India,” tweeted Vaughan.

Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opener also tweeted, “Un-freakin-believable! #Maxwell.”

South African batter Rilee Rossouw also tweeted, “Best inngs of all time!!!! WoW.”

Indian middle-order batter Cheteshwar Pujara also lauded Australia for pulling off one of the best run-chases.

“Australia pulled off a sensational victory from the jaws of defeat. @Gmaxi_32

has played a brilliant innings today. #CWC23 #AUSvAFG,” tweeted Pujara.

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also tweeted, “Stunning from Maxi #AUSvAFG #ICCMensCricketWorldCup2023.”

Sri Lankan pace legend also lauded the superhuman effort of Maxwell.

“OUT OF THIS WORLD #SuperhumanMaxwell,” tweeted Malinga.

Coming to the match, Afghanistan opted to bat first. Zadran held one end steady while Rahmat Shah (30), skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (26), Azmatullah Omarzai (22) made valuable contributions to take Afghanistan near the 230-run mark. Then in the final few overs, Zadran accelerated while Rashid Khan (35* in 18 balls, with two fours and three sixes) played a cameo to take Afghanistan to 291/5 in 50 overs.

Josh Hazlewood (2/39) was the pick of the bowlers for Australia. Adam Zampa, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell took a wicket each.

In the chase of 292, Australia was once in a spot of huge bother at 91/7, but then Glenn Maxwell joined forces with skipper Pat Cummins for a historic double century stand. Maxwell battled heat and cramps to smash Australia’s first-ever ODI double century, ending at 201* in just 128 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes. Pat Cummins finished at 12*.

Rashid Khan, Naveen-ul-Haq and Azhmatullah Omarzai got two wickets each.

Now with six wins in eight games and 12 points, Australia is in semis along with India and South Africa. Afghanistan have a game to go against South Africa and a win there will keep their hopes of semis alive.

Maxwell won the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Sachin Tendulkar Celebrates 50th Birthday: The A To Z Of ‘Master Blaster’ | Cricket News

To the Indians, Sachin Tendulkar is the man for “all seasons”. It has been 10 years since he bid farewell to international cricket, leaving the nation full of moist eyes. As India’s favourite son completes his 50th birthday, PTI chronicles his life and times in an alphabetical manner. It could be people, places and events related to the great man, which have dominated our lives for a better part of three-and-a-half decades.

A (Anjali, Arjun, Ajit) As Sachin Tendulkar maintains, better-half Anjali is the “best partnership” of his life. Son Arjun is carrying forward the Tendulkar legacy on the cricket pitch. And, had it not been for brother Ajit’s efforts, who knows we would been deprived of the batting wizardry of the man from Bandra.

B (Bristol) The venue will always have an emotional connect with Tendulkar. It was here that he scored 140 against Kenya but, more importantly, it came less than a week after the death of his father, Professor Ramesh Tendulkar.

C (Centurion) The venue in South Africa where Tendulkar perhaps played one of his greatest ODI knocks — 98 versus Pakistan during the 2003 World Cup. The six off pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar over point will always be remembered by fans.

D (‘The Don’) Sir Don Bradman will forever remain the ‘Greatest’ with his average of 99.94. But when ‘The Don’ said the “little fella’s” batting style resembled his, the debate on contemporary cricket’s best batter ended there.

E (Eden Gardens) Wankhede, where Tendulkar played his 200th Test, might be his soul but Eden Gardens, where he played his 199th game, remains one of his favourite grounds. Tendulkar the bowler attained superstardom when he bowled the epic last over in the Hero Cup semi-final against South Africa in 1993. India managed to defend 195 by restricting the Proteas to 193/9, with Tendulkar conceding just three runs in the 50th over.

F (Ferrari) Tendulkar’s favourite car and also his favourite Formula One team. He was the proud owner of a gleaming red Ferrari back in the day when the company decided to present him one in 2002 for equalling the record of 29 Test centuries by Sir Don.

G (Gujranwala)Tendulkar ended his ODI career with 49 hundreds but the first of his 463 games was played in this Pakistani city. How much did he score on debut? Well, he didn’t trouble the scorers.

H (Harris Shield) The famous Mumbai Inter-school cricket tournament, where the world first came to know about Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar after his 664-run stand with Vinod Kambli.

I (Inzamam ul Haq) The former Pakistan captain had an interesting story to tell. His son Ibtisam was a big fan of Tendulkar. During the 2004 historic tour of Pakistan, Inzamam actually brought his school-going son during an Indian practice session to introduce him to Tendulkar.

J (John McEnroe) Tendulkar is a tennis buff and during his teenage years, he used to be a big fan of American John McEnroe. Old-timers say that, like McEnroe in the early 80s, the curly-haired Indian genius could be seen moving around his housing society wearing a red headband.

K (Vinod Kambli) Tendulkar’s childhood buddy, Kambli was his partner in that world-record stand of 664 runs in Harris Shield. Kambli’s famous comment on Tendulkar is still one of the most quotable quotes: “Sachin went to the top riding a lift. I had to take the staircase”.

L (Brian Lara) The debate on who between the two was the bigger cricketer will never cease. But to enjoy Sachin Tendulkar’s class, one also needs to appreciate Brian Lara’s panache. The two lit up the 90s like never before and the mutual respect was there for everyone to see. They brought so much grace into rivalry.

M (Glenn McGrath)Tendulkar versus McGrath was the contest that made Test cricket so lively. The two master operators gave it their all when they were competing against each other. Not even an inch of territory was conceded, and their duels in the 1990s and 2000s remain one of the most fascinating rivalries of all time.

N (Narsingh Deonarine) Narsingh Deonarine’s international career is nothing to write home about but the West Indian cricketer will forever cherish being the last-ever bowler to dismiss Tendulkar in international cricket — during the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium in 2013. Sachin was dismissed for 74 by the off-spinner in a match India won by an innings and 126 runs.

O (Old Trafford) No cricket venue in the world is more dear to Tendulkar’s heart than Old Trafford in Manchester. This is the ground where he scored the first of his 100 international hundreds. The unbeaten 119 enabled India to save the second Test of the 1990 series against England.

P (Peshawar) It was the venue where world cricket first took note of the teenage Indian prodigy who hit 53 off just 18 balls. It was an exhibition match curtailed due to rain, but Sachin played a T20-style innings to regale the spectators and make a lasting impression on them.

Q (Abdul Qadir) When we talk about that Peshawar game, can Abdul Qadir be far behind? On several occasions, Tendulkar has recounted the instance where Qadir tried to sledge him after he had launched into Mushtaq Ahmed. “Bacche ko kya marte ho, humein maar ke dikhao? The rest is history as Tendulkar clobbered Qadir for 28 runs in an over.

R (Rahul Dravid) An excellent batter in his own right, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar are the most successful Test-batting pair with 20 century-plus stands between them and 6,920 cumulative runs in partnerships.

S (Shivaji Park Gymkhana) This is where it all started. Under the watchful eyes of Ramakant Achrekar, Tendulkar learnt the ropes of the game at this very ground, considered to be the cradle of Mumbai cricket.

T (Toronto)The Skating and Curling Club ground at Toronto will always be special for Tendulkar. It was here that he got his first ‘Man of the Match’ award as captain after scoring an unbeaten 89 off 89 balls in a winning cause against Pakistan.

U (U2) Tendulkar is a Lata Mangeshkar devotee but when it comes to English songs, he is a big fan of world famous Irish rock band U2. His favourite U2 song is “Where Streets Have No Name”.

V (Virat Kohli) The day Tendulkar retired, Virat Kohli gifted his chain, which was his father’s memory, to Tendulkar and sang “Tujh Mein Rabh Dikhtar Hai” inside the Wankhede dressing room.

W (Wimbledon) A tournament Tendulkar has hardly missed. The legend makes an annual pilgrimage to SW19 and can be seen sitting in one of the VIP zones watching marquee Centre Court matches.

X (St Xavier’s School) It was this particular school against whom Tendulkar and Kambli, playing for Sharadashram Vidyamandir, scored 664 runs in Harris Shield.

Y (Yorkshire) English county side Yorkshire has been in the midst of several racism allegations but in 1990, they received Tendulkar with open arms. The Indian icon was the first overseas player recruited by the club.

Z (Zimbabwe) Zimbabwe bowler Henry Olonga had rattled Tendulkar with a bouncer that the Indian fended and was out caught by close-in fielders during a league game of the 1998 Champions Trophy in Sharjah. However, in the final the icon scored 124 runs as India won by 10 wickets with 120 balls to spare.

Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023: India’s Dominance At Home, Mixed Results Down Under | Cricket News

The latest edition of the Border Gavaskar Trophy will kick start on February 9 in Nagpur. While Team India aim to retain the trophy after a historic win in Down Under, Australia will look to win their first Test series in India since 2004-05. Instituted in 1996 and named after legendary batters Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar, the Border Gavaskar Trophy has had its moments of glory, where history was rewritten, records were shattered, and careers were molded.

Impregnable Home Turf

The inaugural one-match series in 1996 began on a winning note for India, as they beat Australia on the back of Nayan Mongia‘s 152. This was also Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar‘s first match as Test captain.

The 1996 series also heralded the era of India’s domination against Australia at home. India have won 16 out of the 25 Tests at home since 1996, losing only 5 and drawing the rest.

For some perspective: In the previous 25 Test matches played at home, India won only five Tests.

Team India’s home dominance peaked during the 2012-13 series, when the MS Dhoni-led team whitewashed the visitors 4-0 for the first time. Team India’s domination comes out even stronger if one considers the period between 2005 and 2017, when they lost only one Test match – Pune, 2017.

The only time Team India failed to defend their home turf was in 2004, when they lost 2-1.

Australian batters have struggled on the turning tracks of India – from Ricky Ponting, who is the second-highest run scorer in the tournament, in the 2000s to David Warner in the present. The turning tracks did not help spin wizard Shane Warne either, who averaged 43 in India. The only exception is Nathan Lyon, who has scalped 34 wickets at a healthy average of 30.

Mixed Fortunes Down Under

While Team India have been dominant at home, they have had mixed fortunes Down Under. Between 1999-2000 (the first overseas Border Gavaskar Series) and 2014-15, India won just two Test matches – Adelaide, 2003 and Perth, 2008.

India also suffered two humiliating whitewashes in Australia – 1999-2000 and 2011-12. The latter series witnessed the decline of India’s batting ‘quartet’ – Sehwag, Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman. Eventually, Dravid and Laxman never played an international game for India.

The 2014-15 series saw the emergence of Kohli as a captain-batter, but it is now remembered more for the unexpected Test retirement of Dhoni. India lost the series 2-0, both Kohli and Dhoni losing and drawing one Test each.

However, under Kohli, India scripted history in 2018-19 as they became the first Asian team to win a series in Australia. The heroes of this unprecedented feat were Cheteshwar Pujara – 521 runs – and Jasprit Bumrah – 21 wickets. However, Australia were without the services of their two biggest batters, Steve Smith and Warner.

Two years later, India made a dramatic comeback in the series after a humiliating defeat in the first Test at Adelaide. This Test gained infamy as Team India were bowled out for 36, their lowest ever team total. The next three Tests were nothing short of a fairy tale for India.

Despite missing the services of Kohli, battling searing pace bowling, and a growing injury list, India won the series 2-1. The architects of the series victory were Ajinkya Rahane (112 in Melbourne), Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin in the drawn Sydney Test, and Rishabh Pant in the historic Brisbane Test. In winning the Brisbane Test, India became the first team in 32 years to win at the ‘The Gabba’.

Career Turning Point For Legends

The Border Gavaskar Trophy has been a witness to individual brilliance on numerous occasions, which not only rescued the team from precarious situations but also resurrected failing careers.

Long before VVS Laxman became an “Australia-specialist”, scoring over 2,400 runs and hitting six out of his 17 centuries, he was struggling to keep his place in the playing XI. In the first four years of his career, he had scored 626 runs at a paltry average of 25. But things changed dramatically for him in the second innings of the third Test in 2000, when he hit a quickfire 167 off 198 balls. Unfortunately, India faced an innings defeat but Laxman had made his mark in international cricket.

Laxman’s elegant wrist play was once again at play in the 2001 Kolkata Test, when he teamed up with Rahul Dravid to rescue India while following-on. His 281 along with Dravid’s 180 helped India set a target of 384. Harbhajan Singh’s six-wicket haul then gave the finishing touches to a famous Indian victory.

Harbhajan Singh took 32 wickets in the 2001 series – the most by an Indian bowler in a three-match series. The series turned out to be a turning point for Singh, who went on to take over 400 wickets and became the mainstay of Indian bowling attack for a decade.

While Virat Kohli – he is considered the successor to Tendulkar’s legacy – had always been known as a great Test prospect, it wasn’t before the Australia tour of 2014-15 that he came into his own. Captaining two Tests in the absence of Dhoni, Kohli scored 692 runs in the four-Test series. His captaincy debut was a blockbuster – 115 and 141 – and set the stage for his successful reign as a captain.

Records Galore For India

With 3,262 runs at an average of 56.24, Tendulkar continues to be the top scorer in the series. No one among the current crop of players comes closer.

Among the current players, Pujara with 1,893 runs is close to crossing the 2,000-run mark in the 2023 series. He needs to play two more Tests to complete 100 Tests, only the 13th Indian player to achieve this feat.

Kohli has the opportunity to improve his numbers on home turf. In 11 Test innings in India, Kohli has scored just 330 runs at an average of 33.

With 111 wickets, Anil Kumble is the leading wicket taker in the tournament. His compatriot Ashwin is fourth on the list with 89 wickets. He needs one more wicket to complete 450 Test wickets and become the second-fastest to the milestone after Muttiah Muralitharan.

Ravindra Jadeja, who is looking to make a comeback after injury, is just eight short of completing 250 Test wickets. In doing so, he will also become the latest entrant into the ‘250 wickets and 2,500 runs’ club.

Rohit Sharma will be playing his first Border Gavaskar Trophy on home turf, nearly a decade after his debut. He has played seven Tests against Australia, scoring just 408 runs at an average of 31.
