With the amount of international and league cricket action offered this year, it would be a humungous task to truly list out moments that defined this year as their magnitude is different to diverse set of people worldwide.

Nonetheless, here are some top cricket moments of the year, without any ranking:

Virat Kohli completes 50th ODI century

Just a decade back, Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries looked impossible to break. Then stepped up a youngster from Delhi, piling up runs and centuries at a rate never seen before every year.

On that eventful November 15 this year during the ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final at Wankhede Stadium against New Zealand, Virat became the first player to make 50 ODI centuries, achieving this feat in front of the legend himself, who was clapping for him in the audience.

In a chase of 292 runs against Afghanistan, Australia was in a spot of bother at 91/7. With a World Cup semifinal spot on the line, even one single mistake could have sent the great Australian empire of cricket crumbling to heaps, out of contention for the semis.

The gulf of championship titles and big match experience was exposed and sent Afghanistan packing out of the contention for semifinals.

West Indies knocked out of ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers

In one of the most shocking and unexpected games of all time, the Netherlands, led by a century from Teja Nidamanuru (111) managed to tie West Indies’ total of 374 runs.

Later on, star all-rounder Logan van Beek smashed an experienced Jason Holder for 30 runs in the Super Over and also defended it with his sharp bowling. Outthrown were the two-time champions out of an ICC Cricket World Cup for the first time ever.

Coming to the match, Afghanistan opted to bat first. Zadran held one end steady while Rahmat Shah (30), skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (26), Azmatullah Omarzai (22) made valuable contributions to take Afghanistan near the 230-run mark. Then in the final few overs, Zadran accelerated while Rashid Khan (35* in 18 balls, with two fours and three sixes) played a cameo to take Afghanistan to 291/5 in 50 overs.

Josh Hazlewood (2/39) was the pick of the bowlers for Australia. Adam Zampa, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell took a wicket each.

In the chase of 292, Australia was once in a spot of huge bother at 91/7, but then Glenn Maxwell joined forces with skipper Pat Cummins for a historic double century stand. Maxwell battled heat and cramps to smash Australia’s first-ever ODI double century, ending at 201* in just 128 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes. Pat Cummins finished at 12*.

Rashid Khan, Naveen-ul-Haq and Azhmatullah Omarzai got two wickets each.

Now with six wins in eight games and 12 points, Australia is in semis along with India and South Africa. Afghanistan have a game to go against South Africa and a win there will keep their hopes of semis alive.

Maxwell won the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Chasing a target of 200, MI reached home in 16.3 overs. Besides Suryakumar, Nehal Wadhera also played a crucial knock off 52 not out off 34 balls. It was Ishan Kishan’s 42 off 21 that had set the tone for MI in the big chase. Earlier, RCB posted 199 for 6 in 20 overs. Glenn Maxwell scored 68 off 33 while Faf du Plessis hit 65 off 41. Defending the total of 126 for 9, RCB bundled out LSG for 108 in 19.5 overs. Karn Sharma (2 for 20) and Josh Hazlewood (2 for 15) were the pick of the bowlers for RCB. Earlier, Naveen-ul-Haq picked three wickets (3 for 30) as LSG restricted RCB to a below-par total on the sluggish surfaceof Lucknow. Faf du Plessis top-scored for RCB with 44 off 40 balls.
