How close are the Blue Jays’ top hitting prospects to playing in the majors?

KANSAS CITY — Some top Blue Jays prospects are putting up eye-catching offensive numbers at triple-A, and their production has not escaped the attention of decision makers on the big-league team.

In Spencer Horwitz (.353/.488/.485, 1 HR), Addison Barger (.314/.435/.586, 3 HR) and Orelvis Martinez (.333/.392/.681, 6 HR), the Blue Jays have a trio of promising young hitters atop their triple-A batting order. Each one could help at the big-league level this season, and some may be big-league ready now.

At the same time there’s more to big-league performance than hitting, which adds nuance to the question of how soon the team’s top triple-A bats might help at the highest level.

“Three in particular are doing really well,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “We want them to continue to keep getting better and make tough decisions for us. It was a good week for them especially Orelvis. But their development is important and playing every day is important, so it’s definitely a balance.”

Take Martinez, for instance. Now 22 years old, he’s playing full-time at second base for the first time and he has five errors to his name in just 15 games. Maybe he’ll be able to handle the position with time, but regular playing time is likely required to reach that answer.

“Errors are going to happen, but I think him getting the reps there is key for his development,” Schneider said. “We know he can hit. It’s about making his whole game a little more tight.”

If the Blue Jays were to promote him now, they’d either have to accept a major defensive downgrade up the middle (highly unappealing) or stall the overall development of a top prospect (also unappealing).

With that in mind, Horwitz and Barger may be closer to the big-leagues (all three are on the 40-man roster). Since the 26-year-old Horwitz has already reached — and succeeded in — the majors, he’d be a logical candidate for a promotion if someone like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Justin Turner or Daniel Vogelbach were to hit the injured list.

});
});

Meanwhile, Barger might be best positioned to get the call if an infielder or outfielder went down. The big-armed 24-year-old’s been playing third base and right field in the minors, giving him valuable versatility.

Also worth noting: while former top prospects like David Price, Evan Longoria and Kris Bryant were previously held in the minors to suppress their service time, that doesn’t appear to be a concern here. At this point, the Blue Jays could call up Martinez or Barger tomorrow or on Sept. 1 with no difference in their projected timelines to free agency.

In time, all three Blue Jays prospects will surely get their chances in the big-leagues, but on a contending team variables like defence, baserunning and preparation must also be considered when weighing promotions. Because mistakes at the minor-league level are to be expected, but in the majors results are paramount, so there’s less room for patience.

“You want them to be doing well, not just offensively, but you want them to be doing well baseball wise,” Schneider said. “You’ve got to have guys play the game. To me it’s kind of a lost art. Guys can hit the ball hard and throw it hard, but you’ve got to play. It’s going to win you or lose you games. The whole package matters.”

MANOAH’S PATH BACK

After a strong showing at triple-A in which he allowed two runs in 5.2 innings while striking out five on Friday, starter Alek Manoah will return to the mound soon for another rehab outing with the Buffalo Bisons.

The start will take place Wednesday or Thursday depending on weather, and after throwing 92 pitches Friday, he’s not expected to have any restrictions on workload. So, how soon might he back in the majors, and under what circumstances?

Manoah is “on a good track,” Schneider said, and now the Blue Jays want him to build on what he did against the Columbus Clippers. The manager watched the entire outing on video and came away impressed with Manoah’s command and the shape and speed of his slider.

“And a lot of his misses were good,” Schneider added. “They were close.”

Of course, Manoah is just one part of the equation for the Blue Jays. Their rotation has been their biggest strength so far this year, so there’s not exactly a need to rush a pitcher whose rehab window extends to May 6.

Plus, they “definitely want to keep (Yariel Rodriguez) on turn” as a starter for the time being. With all of that in mind, it stands to reason that the Blue Jays will proceed deliberately with Manoah, knowing that these logjams tend to resolve themselves with time.

“A lot of it is how he is and how we are,” Schneider said. “So a good problem to have. But yeah, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

GRADUAL PROGRESSION FOR VOTTO

When Joey Votto rolled his ankle in a spring game on March 17, he wasn’t expected to miss this much time, but he remains on the sidelines with no timetable for getting into a game.

“He’s ramping up baseball activity, and running more but it’s still kind of been the same for about a week or 10 days,” Schneider said. “Not hitting live (batting practice) or anything like that. Kind of just on the same slow track.”

Schneider said there’s no additional injury, but noted Votto wants to be fully ready once he does get into minor-league games.

“Probably just a 40-year-old taking a little bit longer to heal.”

FURTHER INJURY NOTES

Reliever Chad Green (shoulder) is meeting with a team doctor in Toronto to determine next steps. In the meantime, he’s not throwing. … Left-handed pitching prospect Brandon Barriera is visiting with Dr. Keith Meister this week after experiencing elbow soreness. … Right-handed pitching prospect Landen Maroudis is getting an MRI after experiencing forearm soreness.

NBA: No Giannis? No Kawhi? No problem just yet for Bucks, Clippers

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers remain unsure just when they’ll have their top players back on the floor.

So far, they’ve still managed to do just fine in their respective NBA first-round playoff series.

Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo hasn’t played since straining his left calf April 9 and Los Angeles’ Kawhi Leonard has been unavailable all month with inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee. Neither team has said anything about their potential availability Tuesday when the Bucks attempt to take a 2-0 lead over the Indiana Pacers and the Clippers try to maintain home-court advantage against the Dallas Mavericks.

READ: NBA: Antetokounmpo injury casts shadow over Bucks’ series vs Pacers

Bucks coach Doc Rivers said Antetokounmpo “went through a pretty good brisk workout” on Sunday and had been on the court four straight days before taking a maintenance day Monday. The NBA released an injury report Monday night that listed Antetokounmpo as doubtful for Game 2.

Leonard participated in a non-contact practice with the Clippers on Monday and was listed as questionable.

“He’s got to go through practice today, and we’ll see,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said about Leonard’s status for Game 2.

READ: NBA: Clippers beat Mavericks in Game 1 without Kawhi Leonard

While the Bucks and Clippers are missing team leaders, the Phoenix Suns have their star trio intact with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal all healthy. But the Suns find themselves in a more precarious position as they try to avoid falling behind 2-0 in their first-round series with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Timberwolves won 120-95 on their home court in Game 1 by flustering Booker into a 5-for-16 shooting performance.

Booker likened the Game 1 flop to Phoenix’s opening loss in the first round last year at home against the Clippers. The Suns snapped back to take the series in five.

“I’m not saying we’re going to win the next four games, but there was a lot of overreacting after we lost Game 1 to the Clippers,” Booker said after practice on Monday. “It’s just a series.”

SUNS at TIMBERWOLVES

Minnesota leads 1-0. Game 2, 7:30 p.m. EDT, TNT

— NEED TO KNOW: The Timberwolves leaned on their NBA-leading defense in Game 1 with relentless efforts by Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker to help keep Booker and Beal relatively quiet. Their 52-28 rebounding edge was the best postseason margin in franchise history. And they turned 22-year-old superstar Anthony Edwards loose for 33 points.

— KEEP AN EYE ON: Timberwolves reserves. Naz Reid, who’s a finalist for the Sixth Man of the Year award, missed the 2023 postseason with a broken left wrist. He was a beast off the bench along with Alexander-Walker as the backups outscored the Suns bench 41-18.

— INJURY WATCH: The Suns lost sharpshooter Grayson Allen to a sprained right ankle in Game 1, and he was questionable for Game 2 after going 0 for 3 from the floor in 25 minutes in the opener. Minnesota’s Kyle Anderson suffered a hip pointer in a Game 1 collision with Beal’s knee and was limited to 5 minutes. Anderson practiced Monday.

— PRESSURE IS ON: Suns coach Frank Vogel. When the Suns remade their roster over the past year, it wasn’t with the intent of going one-and-done in the playoffs. Vogel — in his first season with Phoenix after coaching the Los Angeles Lakers to the 2020 championship in the pandemic bubble — and his assistants will certainly have some counterpunches ready for defending Edwards and getting Booker going.

PACERS at BUCKS

Milwaukee leads 1-0. Game 2, 8:30 p.m. EDT, NBA TV

— NEED TO KNOW: Damian Lillard scored all 35 of his points in the first half as the Bucks defeated Indiana 109-94 while holding the Pacers to their lowest point total of the season. The Pacers have lost 10 straight postseason games.

— KEEP AN EYE ON: The tempo. The Pacers won four of five regular-season matchups with Milwaukee because the older Bucks roster couldn’t keep up with fast-paced Indiana, which scored a league-high 123.3 points per game. The Bucks controlled the tempo much better Sunday and didn’t allow the Pacers many transition opportunities.

— INJURY WATCH: All eyes are on Antetokounmpo as the Bucks await word on the availability of their two-time MVP.

— PRESSURE IS ON: Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton. The two-time All-Star averaged 27 points against the Bucks during the regular season but attempted only seven shots in Game 1 and was limited to nine points. The pressure also is on all of Indiana’s outside shooters after the Pacers went 8 of 39 from 3-point range Sunday.

READ: NBA: Damian Lillard shoots Bucks past Pacers in Game 1

MAVERICKS at CLIPPERS

Los Angeles leads 1-0. Game 2, 10 p.m. EDT, TNT

— NEED TO KNOW: James Harden had 28 points and Ivica Zubac had 20 points and 15 rebounds in the Clippers’ 109-97 Game 1 triumph. The Mavericks scored just eight second-quarter points and trailed 56-30 at halftime.

— KEEP AN EYE ON: The Clippers’ ability to keep switching things up. Lue is a master strategist who knows Doncic and Irving will pounce if the Clippers keep feeding them a steady diet of the same defensive looks. The Mavs scored 25 points in transition and 25 points at the free-throw line. “We got to do a good job of playing defense without fouling, especially when they get in the bonus,” Lue said.

— INJURY WATCH: Leonard hasn’t played since March 31 and hasn’t participated in any contact practices.

— PRESSURE IS ON: Dallas’ supporting cast. Luka Doncic scored 33 points and Kyrie Irving had 31 in Game 1, but the other Mavericks combined to score just 33 points while shooting 10 of 36 from the floor.

FA Women’s National League Plate: Kira Rai caps dream Manchester return with historic Derby County cup win

Kira Rai retuned to Manchester and delivered on her promise to change English football after helping Derby County Women win their first-ever national trophy.

Rai – who is Derby County’s number 15 and in her 15th year with the club – started the 3-0 win as the Ewe Rams beat Cambridge United to lift the FA Women’s National League Plate at Broadhurst Park, home of FC United of Manchester.

Eleanor Ashton scored a penalty, with captain Amy Sims adding a second, before a thunderbolt late on from Emily Joyce sealed victory to put gloss on the scoreline.

Derby winger Rai told Sky Sports News ahead of the final that the squad are all “proud to play for this club and fight for this badge”. Ironically, Rai would become the first Derby County player ever to be booked in major women’s cup final following a mistimed first-half tackle.

Head coach Sam Griffiths said after the cup triumph she hopes winning a trophy can be a catalyst for long-term progress for the Ewes in coming seasons.

Derby County footballer Kira Rai issued a rallying cry as she became the first women’s footballer to present an accolade at the Asian Media Awards

In October last year, Rai became the first South Asian heritage footballer, male or female, ever to present an award at the annual Asian Media Awards. Premier League legend Alan Shearer is the only other footballer to have been bestowed with the honour.

Before presenting the award, trailblazer Rai addressed dignitaries at the Manchester awards ceremony, including some of the most recognisable journalists from Britain’s South Asian community, explaining her role in driving change in the English game, alongside her football club and Sky Sports.

And just six months later, Rai who rounded off the scoring for her side in the Plate quarter-final, has now helped Derby County Women earn the first piece of major silverware in their history.

“It’s an incredible feeling. What a moment this is for Derby County supporters,” Rai told Sky Sports News after the final whistle.

“I’m just so proud to be a part of a squad and a group of staff that have written their name into Derby County’s history books.

“So many people have played their part in building women’s football at Derby and helping us get here. We’re really grateful to all of them for paving the way for us.”

Asked what impact she hopes her winning a trophy with Derby might have on diverse ethnic representation in women’s football, Rai said: “It’s obvious there aren’t enough girls on the pitch who look like me. We need to see more, and more than anything I hope this can be another step towards changing that.”

Joyce told Rams TV after the game she was “buzzing” with her world-class strike.

She added: “I’m just so happy to get the win, especially for (our coach) Sam.

“Many of us have been with her from the RTC (Regional Talent Club academy pathway) all the way through, so it’s lovely to lift some silverware with her.”

Derby skipper Sims said: “I think there was a bit of an expectation for us to go and win the plate, but to actually go and do it is something else.

“It’s massive, we’ve not won anything since our academy days, so to actually get to senior level, get to play together and to actually win something with Derby is incredible.

Derby County’s men also earned victory over Cambridge United at the weekend and need just a point from their last game to secure automatic promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship

“Hopefully the men can top it off with an automatic promotion as well but to win any trophy with Derby is absolutely incredible.”

The rise of Kira Rai

Kira Rai Derby

Rai started out at Burton Albion, before joining Derby County while still at primary school. She has played in every age-group side and is in her 15th year at the club.

The attacker has been sponsored by official Derby County supporters’ club the Punjabi Rams for a number of years now.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Rai, who featured in last year’s inaugural South Asians in Football Team of the Season, said she feels fortunate to have the support of everyone at the football club including the Punjabi Rams.

“It’s massive to have their support,” she said.

“Within Derby I’ve always been pushed, I’ve had a lot of support from the club, but then to have your own little community within a club is massive.

A young Kira Rai tells Sky Sports News she feels lucky to enjoy the support of fans’ group the Punjabi Rams

“I feel that’s quite a unique thing for me to have and I feel lucky to have that. And obviously, being a Punjabi girl, having their support [is an amazing feeling].

“It’s like you have your own community behind you and you want to be an inspiration for them, but they are also an inspiration for me. They highlight and show football in a South Asian setting is normal.”

Fleet-footed winger Rai is the first Punjabi player ever to pull on a Derby County shirt and score at Pride Park Stadium.

She worked with Sky Sports News journalist and FA Level 2 scout Dev Trehan to devise and deliver the Seeing is Believing girls’ football initiative in 2021, designed to encourage more South Asian female participation in the game.

Rai also agreed to have her story showcased as part of the world’s first exhibition documenting the journey of South Asian heritage women’s footballers in the modern English game.

The display was launched at Stamford Bridge and has gone on show at Wembley Stadium, as well as at community hubs across the country.

It is currently on display at the Wolves Museum at the club’s Molineux Stadium and has now been seen by tens of thousands of people, raising positive awareness about South Asian trailblazers in the women’s game.

Britain’s first turbaned Sikh Member of Parliament, Tan Dhesi, visited the showcase last year at Singh Sabha Sports Centre in his home constituency of Slough.

“Everyone is very proud to see it hosted at Singh Sabha Slough Sports Centre, which is a major hub of activity for young people, especially those of South Asian heritage,” Dhesi said.

Tan Dhesi timeline

“And when they come along and see this exhibition, they now have role models [that they never knew existed] that they too can aspire to be like and emulate. They can go away thinking ‘if she can do it, why can’t I?’.

“Representation matters and it does not matter what sphere that is in. It’s wonderful to see the advances that South Asian heritage female players have made, particularly in the last decade.”

Speaking at the inaugural Women’s Copa Del CL charity tournament at St George’s Park, former England international and non-independent director of the FA Women’s National Board Eartha Pond hailed the timeline as a celebration of “greatness” in the game.

“I played with a lot of South Asian players, even from grassroots level at 14. They have been playing and I just don’t think it has been captured,” she said.

Hanaah ward Trehan Rai Singh Savage

Derby County legends Hannah Ward and Kiran Singh Savage join Dev Trehan and Kira Rai in support of next generation talent Riya Mannu, who was aged 15 at the time

“So it’s great to see the showcase, very, very pleasing. It’s just about celebrating, there is so much greatness within the game, and it’s not just about diversity in terms of colour, it’s also about diversity in terms of mindset, experiences, and cultures. That’s what Britain brings.”

The first-of-its-kind timeline features 20 current and former players from South Asian backgrounds, with Rai and West Brom starlet Mariam Mahmood making a dual entry after a historic game at The Hawthorns last year.

Sky Sports exclusively revealed in 2022 that West Bromwich Albion Women would be hosting Derby at The Hawthorns.

And in November of that year, the pair both netted in just the second ever women’s game played at the famous stadium, which has been home to West Brom’s men’s team for 124 years.

Mahmood: Our stories matter

“It’s great to feature in the timeline alongside Kira,” said Mahmood. “Seeing us feature on the boards shows how far we have come, but also shows how much further we have to go.

“Education and bridging the gap in knowledge about South Asians in football remains a major issue. Our stories matter and I hope this raises positive awareness and encourages more children, particularly girls from South Asian backgrounds, to take up the game and enjoy playing football.”

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Chandarana said: “We can now see all the great things that these girls have achieved and continue to achieve, and it’s great to be a small part of it.

“I hope it gives inspiration to many more, to show that a career in football is possible for women from the South Asian community.”

Rai added: “To feature alongside some fabulous South Asian women as part of the history of the English women’s game is a matter of huge pride for me, my family and my football club.

“We know women’s football is not as diverse as it should be, and I want to play my part to help change that. I hope this inspires the next generation and gives talented girls who look like me the belief that they can also make it in the game.”

RR vs MI Live Score: Pitch report

“There’s been four games (at this venue this season), teams batting first have won twice, teams fielding first have also won twice. Spinners haven’t necessarily dominated over seamers. When you look at the team scores, they have been around 180-190, high, but not too high at the same time. Tonight, we are in the middle as well – boundary sizes square – 67m either side, straight – 76m. This pitch looks very very beautiful, it’s dry, it’s hard and it’s even. Why isn’t there a score over 200? I think one of the reasons is players presently like bounce and there’s not a lot of moisture in this pitch,” said Natalie Germanos and Brian Lara.

RR vs MI Live Score: RR’s strong batting

For RR, Riyan Parag has been the batter of the season. The young Assam batter has reinvented himself and his 318 runs is one of the reasons why RR find themselves at the top of the pecking order. While the batting has revolved around him, skipper Sanju Samson too has produced some fine knocks for the team, aggregating 276 runs so far.

FIDE 2024: Accolades pour in for Gukesh after historic win

People from all walks of life, including the chess community, went into a frenzy as they hailed India’s D. Gukesh as a potential “future world champion” after he etched his name in the history books by winning the prestigious Candidates tournament in Toronto.

Gukesh drew with American Hikaru Nakamura in the final round to not only win the prestigious tournament but also become the youngest ever challenger to the world title at 17.

Five-time world champion and the only other Indian to win the Candidates, the legendary Viswanathan Anand was one of the first people to congratulate the teenager.

“Congratulations to @DGukesh for becoming the youngest challenger. The @WacaChess family is so proud of what you have done. I’m personally very proud of how you played and handled tough situations. Enjoy the moment,” Anand wrote on ‘X’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed Gukesh’s inspirational win.

“India is exceptionally proud of @DGukesh on becoming the youngest-ever player to win the #FIDECandidates! Gukesh’s remarkable achievement at the Candidates in Toronto showcases his extraordinary talent and dedication. His outstanding performance and journey to the top inspires millions,” Modi wrote.

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar also congratulated Gukesh for his stupendous feat.

“What a triumph, @DGukesh! The youngest ever to win the FIDE Candidates—at only 17! Your journey from here leads to the World Championship, and we’ll be with you at every move. Go make history! #FIDECandidates,” Tendulkar tweeted.

Gukesh had become the third youngest player in history to earn the Grandmaster title at the age of 12 and English grandmaster David Howell said he knew the prodigiously talented player would go on to do great things from the moment he played his first match against the Indian.

“Congrats to Gukesh on winning the Candidates!! What a tournament I knew he was special ever since our first game. He was just 12 years old (but already a GM! ) While analysing, both his mature attitude and his calculation skills impressed me hugely. Future world champ?” Howell wrote.

Former world champion and Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik of Russia congratulated Gukesh for his astounding performance.

“What an evening Congratulations to Gukesh and special award for both Fabi, Ian for their incredible performance today. One of the most interesting games I ever saw. Bravo, REAL FIGHTERS, for giving it all. Most important, more than anything in chess in fact Full respect,” Kramnik wrote.

With the win, Gukesh bettered the legendary Garry Kasparov’s 40 year-old record. The Russian great was 22 when he qualified in 1984 to clash with compatriot Anatoly Karpov.

The Chennai-based teen will take on reigning world champion, China’s Ding Liren, for the crown later this year.

Indian grandmaster Koneru Humpy, who finished second in the women’s section, said “Congratulations to @DGukesh for becoming the youngest challenger!!” Another Indian Grandmaster Tania Sachdev said Gukesh’s win shows that “furture is here.” “GUKESH WINS THE CANDIDATES!! The future is here. It’s today. 22.04.2024 a date to remember It’s going to be Ding Liren vs Gukesh, World Chess Championship 2024” Sachdev tweeted.

Dronacharya award-winning coach Ramachandran Ramesh lauded the Indian’s inspiring run at the tournament.

“Hearty Congratulations to young @Gukesh for convincingly winning the Candidates. Inspiring performance! Whole India is proud of you!” Ramesh tweeted.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijani chess grandmaster Teimour Radjabov was left spellbound by the teenager’s achievement.

“@DGukesh congratulations, stunning! At any age, but at 17 years old… it is just WOW!” he wrote.

Industrialist Anand Mahindra predicted a long and shining future for Gukesh.

“The ICEMAN prevails!! He comes from a swelteringly hot state, but he’s shown he can keep his cool even when competitive heat is at its peak. Just 17 years old, @DGukesh has a long and shining future ahead of him. And so does Indian Chess. An entire nation stands and Cheers this Chaturanga Champ,” Mahindra wrote.

SWPL round-up: Celtic thrash Hearts to retain top spot from Rangers

Celtic remain top of the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League after cruising to a 5-0 victory over Heart of Midlothian at Celtic Park.

After Hearts’ historic victory over Rangers in midweek, Celtic would have been wary of the potential for another shock but the league leaders made light work of the Edinburgh side.

Lucy Ashworth-Clifford opened the scoring with just four minutes played to ease any nerves before Murphy Agnew’s brace all but wrapped up the game with 30 minutes played.

SWPL Player of the Month for March, Natasha Flint, added Celtic’s fourth in the second half before Agnew wrapped up her hat-trick.

Celtic next face third-placed Glasgow City when they return to league action on May 1. Hearts remain fourth and will be looking to bounce back away to Rangers on the same evening.

Partick Thistle 1-3 Rangers

Rangers moved above Celtic momentarily in the league but finished the day two points behind their title rivals.

In what was a fierce match throughout, Jo Potter’s side took until the 57th minute to finally break the deadlock as Kirsty Howat opened the scoring.

With the away side dominating the match, Thistle managed to level the scoring just 10 minutes later against the run of play. Imogen Longcake capitalised on a mistake by Rangers goalkeeper Victoria Esson to score into the empty net.

As Rangers continued to push for a winner, they eventually found it through substitute Sarah Ewens who headed home from a long ball. The Gers sealed three points the dying minutes as another substitute, Rachel Rowe, found the final goal of the match.

Rangers will be seeking revenge against Hearts in their next league match on May 1 as they host the Edinburgh side at Broadwood while Partick Thistle look to rediscover winning ways at home to Hibernian the same evening.

Hibernian 0-1 Glasgow City

It was another close-fought defeat for Hibernian against a top-three side as Glasgow City ensured they remain four points behind Rangers and six behind Celtic.

The only goal of the game came with 13 minutes played as Lauren Davidson headed home an Amy Muir cross. The two former Hibees combined to haunt their former side.

Despite chances for both sides, neither could find another goal as Hibs suffered their third consecutive defeat by one goal to a top-three opponent.

Glasgow City have a chance to put themselves back in the title race when they travel to Celtic on May 1 while Hibs will be looking to end a four-game losing streak away to Partick Thistle that evening.

Hamilton Academical 0-3 Spartans

Spartans look to have moved themselves into safety, pulling seven points clear of their opponents after eventually overcoming Hamilton Accies at New Douglas Park.

The sides were level at the break but the opener came five minutes after the restart as Hannah Jordan’s attempt was deflected into the net by Megan Quinn. Five minutes later and the Edinburgh side doubled their lead as Mya Bates finished off with a nice first-time effort.

Into the final quarter of the match and Jordan ensured her name would be on the scoresheet, finishing a one-on-one with the ‘keeper.

With 15 points left to play for, Spartans look to have secured safety as they are now 10 points clear of relegation and seven clear of the relegation play-off spot. They are next away to Motherwell, a side unbeaten in their last six matches.

Hamilton Accies remain 11th, three points above bottom side Dundee United who they next face on May 1. It will be considered a crucial decider in the battle to avoid automatic relegation.

Dundee United 1-5 Aberdeen

Aberdeen fought back with five goals in the second half to keep Dundee United bottom of the ScottishPower Women’s Premier League.

The home side took a surprise lead at the break as Morgan Steedman’s long-range effort found the back of the net with 41 minutes gone.

A quarter of an hour after the restart though and the Dons were ahead as Eilidh Shore brought the sides level before Hannah Stewart found the second.

In the space of a further 15 minutes Aberdeen made it a comfortable win as Bayley Hutchison scored a hat-trick, taking her to 24 goals for the season and making her the current top goalscorer in the league.

Aberdeen remain five points clear of Motherwell in seventh and next face Montrose at Pittodrie on April 30. Dundee Untied are rooted to the foot of the table, three points behind Hamilton Accies who they face next.

Motherwell 2-1 Montrose

Motherwell made it six games undefeated with a narrow victory over Montrose at K-Park.

Kayla Jardine gave the Women of Steel the lead with 19 minutes played but Montrose would find the next goal through Demi Taylor just after the restart.

The home side got the all-important goal though, Morgan Cross finishing from close range after good work from Louisa Boyes.

Motherwell host Spartans next on Wednesday May 1 while Montrose head to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen on April 30.

‘I burn for it’: Canucks’ Miller savours shot to step up in playoffs

VANCOUVER — The irony in the evolution of J.T. Miller is that his best years in the NHL have been spent until now without the playoff hockey required to test and validate the better version of himself.

But that’s the problem with wisdom, isn’t it? Its arrival is unpredictable and very often late.

The poorer version of Miller, when he was preoccupied with points and ice time and, in his words, “knew nothing” about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, was with the New York Rangers in the first half of his 20s. Miller was part of a Rangers organization that played 12 playoff rounds in five seasons and in 2014 lost the Stanley Cup Final.

In the five years since his 2019 trade to the Vancouver Canucks, which acted as an accelerant in Miller’s metamorphosis from the “before” to the “after” stage of himself, the power forward from East Palestine, Ohio, is 11th in NHL scoring with 402 points in 364 games.

Only five Canucks — none of them since 2011 — have posted more points in a season than the 103 Miller amassed this year before sitting out Game 82 on Thursday in Winnipeg. And yet, the All-Star centre who turned 31 in March has not played a playoff game in front of fans during these peak years.

“We had really good hockey teams,” Miller said of his formative seasons with the Rangers, who traded him in 2018 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. “But my mindset was still about me and ice time. And if you looked at my track record, my playoff stats . . . were very poor. I think that a lot of that had to do with my attitude.

“I’d play in the top-six or top-nine throughout the year, and then I get to the playoffs and didn’t play the right way, so I’d go down to the fourth line. It was kind of immaturity. You learn to grow up at some point. But weirdly enough, since I feel like I’ve learned a lot about my game, I haven’t been back to the playoffs. I haven’t been there since I was 26. That’s like 40 per cent of my career, 50 per cent of my career. That’s a big deal.”

So is the first-round series starting Sunday for the Canucks, whose core players younger than Miller have experienced only bubble hockey in the fan-less pandemic playoffs of 2020.

When they skate out into the semi-darkness and deafening roar of Rogers Arena before Game 1 against the Nashville Predators, it will be the Canuck franchise’s first home playoff game since 2015. The longest-tenured Canuck, 27-year-old winger Brock Boeser, hadn’t even been drafted when Vancouver was upset by the Calgary Flames in that year’s opening round.

As a 22-year-old, Miller logged 19 playoff games that spring for the Rangers and contributed one goal. In his first 61 playoff games, all before his 27th birthday, Miller scored three times.

[brightcove videoID=6351332944112 playerID=JCdte3tMv height=360 width=640]

“The last four years, I just feel like my brain has kind of switched to my priorities in life,” Miller told Sportsnet. “Not getting to the playoffs has driven a lot of my frustration. I don’t think anybody on this team has played a playoff game here in this building.

“We’ve done so many good things as a team this year, but it really only matters in the playoffs. And I just want to play in those games so bad, and I know everybody’s thinking the same thing.”

Miller has transformed himself since Rick Tocchet became head coach 15 months ago.

Not only has he elevated his game, he has become dependable as a player and leader. Largely gone are the tantrums and negative body language, the self-indulgent penalties and lazy plays. Miller has learned to manage his famously volatile emotions, channeling his superpowers as a player towards good.

The concept of Canuck fans chanting “J.T. Miller! J.T. Miller!”, as they have several times in recent games, would have been inconceivable two years ago unless the mob was also holding pitchforks.

But the Stanley Cup Playoffs have not seen this version of Miller.

“I try to preach best by how I play,” he explained. “But at the same time, I’m a vocal guy. Everything that I say, the things that piss me off as a leader and the things that I want to explain to the team, are all based on how it’s going to be in the playoffs.

“It’s not that the regular season is easy; it’s just that the playoffs, there is no room and it takes a mindset and (courage) to win pucks and go to the net and just get hit by people and sticks. These were things I didn’t really care about when I was younger. Now I know that if you do those things more than the other team, you’re going to win games more times than not. And the players that do that are my favorite players in the league.

“I mean, I’m obviously not comparing myself to them, but guys like (Sidney) Crosby and (Anze) Kopitar and Ryan O’Reilly — you know, those hard-nosed centremen that take a beating but do whatever it takes. I grew up watching that, watching Joe Thornton when he was with the Sharks, Jamie Benn. I love those players. As a competitor, I revered them. Those are the players I want to become.”

[brightcove videoID=6351243930112 playerID=JCdte3tMv height=360 width=640]

Miller will be playing against O’Reilly this series.

Led by O’Reilly, Filip Forsberg, Gustav Nyquist, Roman Josi and Ryan McDonagh, Nashville has far more experience than Vancouver at the top of its lineup.

Miller has played 78 playoff games. But the only post-season experience for Boeser, Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes and Thatcher Demko was in the Edmonton bubble. Defenceman Filip Hronek has never logged an NHL playoff game of any kind. Dakota Joshua has played one.

Playoff inexperience is one of the Canucks’ few evident disadvantages in this series, and how they navigate it and handle the rocket-blast of emotions and ferocious intensity of playoff hockey is likely to be paramount to the outcome.

“I’m excited because I know what’s coming,” Canuck assistant coach Adam Foote, who logged 170 playoff games as a player and won a pair of Stanley Cups, told Sportsnet. “But the waves are not as high as you feel sometimes when you can just be calm. You can survive it if you stick to your staples. I know it sounds corny, but (the waves) are going to come, it’s going to happen. When you get nervous, just stick to what you do well and it will all sort itself out.”

[brightcove videoID=6351208470112 playerID=JCdte3tMv height=360 width=640]

The key is to play the same, sound way you have all season when every instinct amid the emotional typhoon of playoff hockey is to do things differently.

Miller said every single play matters. And all of those plays, no matter how little, determine success.

“Windows won’t last forever,” he said. “And I’m not getting into the window game and what that means, but when you look at the core here and how young they are, they’re not even in their prime yet. We can do something special here and we have to realize that. For the most part, teams . . . get their crack for only a couple years. And, again, I’m not labelling this group (limiting the window). But we’ve got a chance to win this year. We have a special team. We have our expectations, and we’re still building.

“I just love the playoffs. And the older I get, the more I love them because your mindset changes. And I guarantee you it will change for every single guy in here. Once you get a taste of it one time — the city, the crowd, the away crowds . . . I burn for it. It’s the greatest feeling ever.”

And you never know how long you may wait to feel it again.

Match Preview

Coming from two straight wins, Dortmund will feel capable of beating the new league champions Leverkusen. After a few shaky periods in their Champions League game against Atletico Madrid, Dortmund recovered to win 4-2 in their last game. That was their seventh win in nine matches and they failed to score only once in 10 matches. In the reverse fixture against Leverkusen, Dortmund conceded late to see the clash end 1-1. That extended their run to three unbeaten games against Leverkusen. They have four wins in the last six meetings with Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen have just one thing to play for now in the Bundesliga – maintaining their unbeaten run. Dortmund are one of the sides Leverkusen have failed to beat in the league this season. This hasn’t been an easy fixture for the German champions, and playing at the Signal Iduna makes it even tougher.

In the advent of Borussia Dortmund’s 4-2 win vs Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, they have reached a peak they have not stood on in the competition since the Jürgen Klopp era.

Despite their struggles in the Bundesliga, BVB have found themselves in the final four of Europe’s elite football competition.

Latest team news

Paris Saint-Germain faces a defensive dilemma ahead of their crucial Ligue 1 clash against Lyon at the Parc des Princes, with key absences plaguing their backline.

Center-back Presnel Kimpembe remains sidelined with an Achilles injury, while Layvin Kurzawa’s ongoing back issue limits Les Parisiens’ options at left-back, compounded by Tagliafico’s suspension following a red card in the previous match.

With defensive reshuffling on the cards, PSG’s defensive stability could face a stern test. Meanwhile, Lyon prepares for the encounter with their own adjustments, as Brazilian Henrique Silva is poised to step in to fill the void on the left side of their backline.

Additionally, the emergence of Rayan Cherki, following his impactful display off the bench, adds an intriguing dynamic to Lyon’s attacking lineup, potentially altering the starting XI composition. With both sides grappling with key personnel issues, Sunday’s clash promises to be a tactical battle of adaptability and resilience.

Paris Saint Germain vs Lyon Match Predictions

1×2 Match Prediction

As Paris Saint-Germain, despite their dominant position atop the table, have shown signs of vulnerability with just two victories in their last five outings, the remaining matches ending in draws.

Conversely, Lyon arrives in Paris boasting an impressive run of form, securing four wins in their last five matches, with just one draw. Given the contrasting trajectories of both teams, Sunday’s clash is poised to be fiercely competitive, with the potential for either side to emerge victorious or for the encounter to culminate in a hard-fought draw.

As the stakes soar and tensions mount, fans can anticipate a gripping spectacle characterized by uncertainty and unpredictability till the final whistle.

Tip – PSG to win this match or draw 1.092 odds

Corners

With both Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon showcasing a trend of fewer corner kicks in their recent encounters, Sunday’s upcoming clash at the Parc des Princes appears poised for a similar outcome.

In their respective last five matches, both PSG and Lyon have consistently recorded under 9.5 corners, indicating a propensity towards a more contained style of play rather than expansive wing play or set-piece opportunities.

As such, fans can anticipate a match characterized by tactical battles in midfield, with limited opportunities for corner kicks.
