Pietrangelo posts three points for Golden Knights in comeback win over Canucks

Alex Pietrangelo scored and notched a pair of assists as the Vegas Golden Knights topped the Vancouver Canucks 5-4 in an offensive firestorm Monday.

William Carrier put away a pair of goals for the Golden Knights (15-4-1) while Mark Stone scored and contributed a helper. Reilly Smith also found the back of the net for Vegas, and Jack Eichel and Alec Martinez each had two assists.

The Canucks (6-10-3) got a goal and an assist from Andrei Kuzmenko. Bo Horvat, Luke Schenn and Elias Pettersson also scored and Quinn Hughes notched a pair of helpers.

Logan Thompson made 25 saves for Vegas and Vancouver’s Thatcher Demko stopped 33-of-38 shots.

Monday marked the seventh time this season the Canucks have given up a multi-goal lead in a loss.

The visitors held a 2-1 advantage heading into the third period, where the offence erupted for both sides.

Pietrangelo put away the game winner 14:14 into the final frame, collecting a puck from Stone and sending a backhanded shot past Demko from the low slow.

Another goal was disallowed after Stone sent a puck through Demko’s pads 10:08 into the period. Vancouver challenged, arguing the puck went out of play and after video review, officials agreed, saying it hit the lens of a camera in the corner before popping back out onto the ice.

There were no questions when Smith shovelled a puck into the Vancouver net 8:57 into the frame to tie the game at 4-4.

Carrier made it 4-3 with his second goal of the night 6:54 into the third, sending in a rebound from the top of the crease for his sixth of the season.

Thirty-three seconds earlier, Vancouver took a two-goal lead 6:11 into the final frame when Pettersson blasted a one-timer from the bottom of the slot. Thompson saved the initial shot but the Swedish centre crashed the net and poked the rebound in past the netminder.

Schenn fired a wrist shot from the boards 5:35 into the third and the puck ricocheted in off Golden Knights’ defenceman Nicolas Hauge to give the home side a 3-2 lead.

Horvat drew the Canucks even 1:47 into the frame with a wrist shot from the hash marks. The Vancouver captain has 15 goals on the season, the second most in the NHL behind Connor McDavid (16).

Two goals in quick succession put the Golden Knights ahead midway through the second.

Stone redirected an Eichel shot in from the slot 14:52 into the frame before Eichel’s shot bounced off Carrier, stationed in front of the net, and in past Demko 49 seconds later.

The Canucks went up 1-0 earlier in the period when Brock Boeser danced around Zach Whitecloud and threw a puck into the crease, where Kuzmenko tapped it in for his eighth goal of the season.

The play extended Boeser’s point streak to seven games with two goals and six assists across the stretch.

MAN ADVANTAGE

Both sides went 0 for 1 on the power play.

MARKING MILESTONES

Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault played his 500th regular-season NHL game Monday. Now in his 10th season, the 31-year-old centre suited up for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers before Vegas selected him in the 2017 expansion draft. Vancouver defenceman Ethan Bear made his 200th regular-season appearance.

UP NEXT

The Canucks will kick off a three-game road trip Wednesday against the Avalanche in Colorado. The Golden Knights will host the Ottawa Senators the same night.

LIVE: Feisty Ronaldo defends explosive interview

Ronaldo’s rift with Manchester United last week went from bad to worse when he said he felt “betrayed” by the club, claimed senior figures were trying to force him out of Old Trafford and ripped manager Erik ten Hag, among a host of inflammatory comments.

Addressing his comments publicly for the first time, the megastar striker said he did not regret the timing despite the feud potentially hindering Portugal’s build-up to the World Cup in Qatar.

“Timing is always timing,” Ronaldo said on Monday.

“From your side it is easy to look at how we can choose timings.

“Sometimes you write truths, sometimes you write lies.

“I don’t have to worry what others think. I talk when I want to. Everybody knows who I am, what I believe in.”

Portugal teammates Bernado Silva and Ruben Neves have both been asked about the Ronaldo fiasco at media conferences on the brink of the World Cup.

“We were playing around last week,” Ronaldo said on Monday.

“His plane was late, and I asked him, ‘Did you come by boat?’.

“Please, don’t ask players about me; ask about the World Cup.”

Portugal will begin its World Cup campaign against Ghana at 3am on Friday (AEDT).

F1: Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc hails big step forward as runner-up

Formula One F1 – Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – November 20, 2022 Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc celebrates with a trophy on the podium after finishing in second place in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix REUTERS/Aleksandra Szmigiel

ABU DHABI—Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc hailed a big step forward as Formula One championship runner-up on Sunday and hoped to go one better next season.

The Monegasque finished second to Red Bull’s double world champion Max Verstappen in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“Considering where we were last year, it’s a really big step forward,” said the 25-year-old, who won three of the season’s 22 races while teammate Carlos Sainz triumphed once.

Ferrari finished as championship runners-up to Red Bull, after ending last year third and without a win. They also drew a blank in 2020, when they were sixth overall.

Ferrari had 12 pole positions this year, the most of any team and 10 more than last season, as well as 16 podium finishes.

Leclerc had been seventh overall in 2021, with Sainz fifth, and this season has been his best yet in Formula One even if Ferrari fans are disappointed the team fell short again.

“I think we improved throughout the end of the season in terms of strategy,” said Leclerc, who won two of the year’s first three races before his title bid fell apart in a mix of mechanical unreliability, driver errors and strategy mistakes.

“We still need to work in terms of race pace, because on Sunday we seem to struggle a bit more. But we’ll push during the winter break in order to catch them back a little.”

Leclerc made a one-stop strategy work on Sunday while Perez pitted twice and was unable to rein in his rival despite an exciting late chase.

“I’m confident that in terms of pace, we will manage to catch Red Bull back next year,” said Leclerc.

Team boss Mattia Binotto said the team had succeeded in getting back to being competitive.

“We can put 2022 behind us knowing that we made a lot of progress and, as from Tuesday, we will start preparing for the new challenge that awaits us in 2023,” he said.

Hogs’ Sanders, Jefferson force upset of No. 14 Rebels

AP

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — – Quarterback KJ Jefferson returned. So did Arkansas’ offensive firepower. But Rocket Sanders grabbed the spotlight.

Sanders rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns, including a 68-yarder on the opening drive of the second half, in a 42-27 rout of No. 14 Ole Miss on Saturday night.

“He played extremely well,” Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said. “Any running back that carries the ball for 100, 150 yards, they’ve got to have a break, most of the time, they’ve got to have one or two that’ll be a 30-, 40-yard pop. Certainly, that’s what he (got) tonight.”

The Razorbacks had a 35-6 halftime lead, and the Rebels’ 21 fourth-quarter points made the game appear closer than it was.

Sanders averaged 9.7 yards on 24 carries, helping Arkansas (6-5, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) snap a two-game skid and become bowl-eligible. He gained 153 yards in the first half.

Jefferson returned from an injury, going 17 of 22 passing for 168 yards and three scores. Matt Landers added two touchdown receptions for the Hogs.

Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3, No. 14 CFP) moved the ball and had chances early. But holding penalties nullified two touchdown passes from Jaxson Dart. The Rebels lost a fumble, were forced to settle for two field goals on promising drives and missed a field-goal try.

“Very discouraging, obviously,” coach Lane Kiffin said. “I didn’t feel we were flat. We were moving the ball. We just played really poor in the red zone. Two touchdown passes called back, and we didn’t tackle very well. It just shows you the value of turnovers. Give those guys credit. Senior night, they played really hard, ran the ball really well.”

The Rebels had two 200-yard rushers – Quinshon Judkins (214) and Zach Evans (207) – but still trailed by 36 points at one point.

Arkansas linebacker Drew Sanders picked off a Dart pass, setting up Sanders’ 8-yard scoring run just before halftime for the 35-6 cushion.

In the fourth, Judkins scored on a 1-yard run, Evans had a 48-yard TD and Dart passed 13 yards to Malik Heath for a score. Dart went 21 of 36 passing for 240 yards.

THE TAKEAWAY

Ole Miss: The Rebels were outclassed in the wake of a tough 30-24 loss to Alabama, but they can’t let the setback linger since bitter rival Mississippi State looms.

Arkansas: The Razorbacks looked like a different team, especially on offense, after being upset by Liberty and dropping a tight game against LSU.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Ole Miss will almost certainly tumble out of the Top 25.

“Didn’t they know that they were going to Australia for T20 World Cup?” – Salman Butt reckons sacked Indian selectors paid price for poor thought process

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has opined that the Chetan Sharma-led Indian selection committee paid the price for picking a poor team for the T20 World Cup 2022, not keeping the conditions in mind. Pointing to the absence of a genuine fast bowler, he stated that the Men in Blue suffered due to a lack of resources at their disposal.

On Friday, November 18, the BCCI sacked the entire selection committee led by Sharma, just days after India’s 10-wicket loss to England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final in Adelaide.

Apart from former pacer Sharma, the selection committee comprised Sunil Joshi (South Zone), Harvinder Singh (Central Zone), and Debashish Mohanty (East Zone). The BCCI has invited applications for new selectors and has set a November 28 deadline for the same.

While some feel the selection committee was made a scapegoat for Team India’s poor performance in the ICC event Down Under, Butt did not agree with the observation. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he stated:

“Yes, at times, in a culture like sub-continent, you have to show that you have sacrificed something. Some people might feel they (selectors) have been made scapegoats. But I don’t feel so. Why were fast bowlers not picked, keeping Australian conditions in mind?

“What was the reason behind not having an out-and-out fast bowler in the team? Didn’t they know that they were going to Australia for the T20 World Cup and were going to play a match in Perth?.”

India lost only one match during the Super 12 stage, going down to South Africa on a pacy surface in Perth. However, they ended up being hammered by 10 wickets in the second semi-final against the Englishmen in Adelaide.

“India did not have any venom in their bowling” – Salman Butt on Men in Blue’s semi-final loss

Reflecting on Team India’s insipid bowling performance in the semi-final contest, Butt again observed that the Men in Blue missed genuine pace. He elaborated:

“When you go to Australia, if you have an out-and-out quick bowler, he will be effective on all the grounds there. India did not have any venom in their bowling that could pose a threat to the opposition in Adelaide. Selectors have to be answerable for that.”

Defending a total of 168, India could not pick up a single wicket in the semi-final against England as the chasing side raced to victory in 16 overs.

ISL: Mumbai City FC Blank Bengaluru FC 4-0 | Football News

Mumbai City FC players celebrate© ISL

Mumbai City FC blanked the mighty Bengaluru FC 4-0 in an Indian Super League match on Thursday. Jorge Diaz (14th minute), Lalengmawia Ralte (32nd minute), Bipin Singh (58th minute) and Lallinzuala Chhangte (74th minute) were on target for Mumbai City as they maintained their second position in the league with 15 points from seven games. Hyderabad FC, with 16 points from 6 games, are on top currently.

Bengaluru, who have India captain Sunil Chhetri (came in as substitute) and Roy Krishna in their ranks, were completely outplayed as they have now slumped to 10th position with only four points from six games. This includes four successive defeats.

Mumbai drew the first blood when Alan Costa’s poor defending found Diaz displaying his poaching skills as he snapped the ball and with a deft touch put it past the goalie.

The match incidentally had to be stopped as lights went off at the stadium. The second goal came in the 32nd minute when right wing back Rahul Bheke supplied a delivery to Greg Stewart down the right edge of the penalty box. Stewart kept a beautiful cutback as Bipin Singh sold a dummy and Ralte slotted home with Bengaluru defence caught napping.

The third goal post break was effectively created by Diaz when he headed down a neat cross from wide right for Bipin to tap home.

After being 0-3 down, Chhetri was introduced into the proceedings but it hardly changed anything for Bengaluru as Chhangte rounded off the tally in the 74th minute.

Having conceded two goals due to weak defending on its left flank, it was turn for the right flank to increase the team’s miseries as Chhangte’s pile driver from a low cross down left found back of the net.

Pakistan’s Ahmed Mujtaba ready to make his ONE return after 22 months away – Sport360 News

“I am super excited, you know. It’s been a long time. Just can’t wait to step back into the cage, you know,” he said. “After fighting Rahul Raju, I had plans to go abroad, so I went to the US, I went to AKA, American Kickboxing Academy. I did my camp over there for four and a half months and it went really well. I learned a lot of great things. It was one of the best camps I’ve ever had.

“After that, I went back to Pakistan and I continued my training and I feel there’s a lot of difference in my training, I’ll deliver that on the fight night. People will see the new Wolverine, with different skills, with a different mindset, and with different power, you know.

Standing in his way of a dream return is Brazil’s Abraao Amorin, who has lost just once in his last five fights, and had a successful ONE debut in April this year when he scored a second round TKO win over Dae Song Park. Mujtaba is conscious of his opponent’s capabilities with his hands, but feels he has also seen enough to be confident heading into the clash.

“Abraao is a good fighter overall,” he said. “He just tries to swing a lot of punches. In his last fight, the first round didn’t really go really well, according to his plan. But in the second round, he got the opportunity and he won the fight, though it is a third-degree black belt, but for me, I’ve trained with black belts and with the Russian squad, so I’m ready for it.

“I don’t care whoever it is in front of me. I’ll go in the cage and I have to smash and I will win, you know.”

Mujtaba feels his well-rounded game will have answers to any question Abraao may pose, and says he is ready for any type of challenge this weekend.

“For me, I don’t care if he wants to wrestle, I’ll wrestle him,” he explains. “If he wants to do striking, I will strike with him, if he wants to do BJJ, I’ll do BJJ. I’m ready in every aspect of this art, you know, because I’ve been training for a very long time, and I feel that energy inside me and I just can’t wait for the date of the fight, you know.”

And a message for all his fans?

“All I want to say is that the Wolverine is back and I’m going to go and put the show on. And I just want to say to the fans in Singapore where people love me as well, I want to say that I’m coming to Singapore, and it’s going to be fireworks. Just be ready. And mark your calendars.”

Cristiano Ronaldo: Gary Neville says there is no way back for forward at Man Utd

Sky Sports’ Gary Neville says there is “no way back” for Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United after his explosive criticism of the club and manager Erik ten Hag.

Neville, who was himself criticised by Ronaldo during his interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV, has told Sky Sports he cannot see the Portugal forward playing for the club again.

“No, and l don’t think he wants a way back,” Neville said. “He wouldn’t have done this interview if he wanted a way back. He knew it would bring the headlines it has and be the end of his Manchester United career.”

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Speaking to Piers Morgan on TalkTV, Cristiano Ronaldo said Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville ‘don’t know what is going on’ after he received criticism from both his former team-mates

Manchester United have not yet indicated what action they make take following Ronaldo’s interview.

“I’m wondering what Man Utd are doing because the reality of it is they know they have to terminate Cristiano’s contract or they basically open up a precedent so any player can criticise them in the future,” added Neville.

“I agree with some of the things Cristiano has said and many Man Utd fans will agree with many things Cristiano has said but the reality is if you’re an employee within a business and say those things your employment has to terminate and Man Utd have to do that in the next few days.

“Cristiano probably wants that as well but it didn’t need to end like that. They could have come together a couple of weeks ago and navigated a pathway through what could have potentially been choppy seas to the shore but it’s not happened, they’ve both basically backed themselves into a corner.

What did Ronaldo say about Neville and Rooney?

“People can have their own opinions.

“They don’t really know what’s going on at the training ground, they have to listen to my point of view as well. It’s easy to criticise if they don’t know the whole story.

“They are not my friends, they are colleagues. We played together but we’re not having dinner together. It’s part of my journey, they keep criticising me with negativity every time. I can continue my trip and I have to catch up with people who like me.”

“I think he’s – over a period of many, many months – stored up pent-up frustration, he’s not done any interview at all this season for any broadcaster. United are on nearly every single week and I suspect he’s been asked to do an interview after every game, every single week and he’s chosen not to speak. He’s felt he’s needed to come out and say his piece and get off his chest what’s been bugging him.

“I don’t know what he thought in respect of what United fans would think [about the interview]. I’ve called for many years for football players to be open, to be independent thinking and come out and speak their minds and not be micro-managed with an inch of their lives by PR teams. I can’t think that’s happened here – I can’t think any PR advisor would have told him to go and do what he’s done.

“He would have done this off his own back with his own strength of character and personality. There was probably another way to do it but that was from the club’s side and Cristiano’s side, when I had that debate in the studio after the Chelsea game three or four weeks ago with Roy Keane, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Dave Jones, I urged Man Utd and Cristiano to come together that week because it was obvious the relationship was failing or had failed and to navigate a pathway to January or the World Cup where they created a truce. Exits don’t have to happen this way if both sides are proactive and mature. I’m disappointed that meeting doesn’t seem to have happened.

“Cristiano hasn’t been controlled or managed, it doesn’t look like he’s reached out to the club and opened communication lines. We’ve ended up with this quite unsavoury situation whereby it looks like Cristiano is going to end this period of his reign at Man Utd in not a great a feeling as it should be.

“He’s one of the greatest players ever to play the game in the world and certainly one of Man Utd’s greatest ever player. I remember when players left Man Utd when I was there and it didn’t always end in the right way and it never felt right. And as a fan it doesn’t feel right that someone I played with needs to leave the club in this way, or the club need to end it this way.”
