Trade predicts that Prabhas-starrer Salaaar’s Hindi version will cross Adipurush’s Hindi collections; Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki will collect Rs. 220-225 crores in its lifetime :Bollywood Box Office – Bollywood Hungama

A lot was expected from the big Christmas releases, Dunki, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Salaar, starring Prabhas. Also, while Dunki was directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Salaar was helmed by Prashanth Neel of KGF fame. These filmmakers have a separate fan base. As a result, the hopes were immense. While the films did well, a lot more was expected from them. We spoke to the trade about their performance at the ticket window.

Trade analyst Atul Mohan said, “People expected more from Dunki as it was directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Also, Shah Rukh Khan’s dream run was going on.” He added, “The plot was superb. Unusually such films show characters struggling to reach foreign shares. But in this film, unko Dunki maarke wapis aana pad raha hai. This was quite fresh. With a plot like this, that too coming from Rajkumar Hirani, anybody would jump at it.”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst opined, “Dunki, in my opinion, is a fantastic movie. It is message-oriented and has a lot of soul. The film has to be watched with a heart and not with conventional logic. The mood of the nation was action-oriented. That could be the reason (why it underperformed). Also, the promotions could have been a little better. They underplayed the film, relying a bit too much on word of mouth.”

He also said, “Salaar affected the film more. If Salaar had not released, Dunki would have collected Rs. 30 crores more and would have had first-week collections of Rs. 180 crores.” Dunki collected Rs. 149.77 crores in its first week.

Atul Mohan further explained, “The jokes didn’t land well. But the big problem was that people had too many expectations. People went for a film like Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, for example, without much hope. And it worked. But with Dunki, people expected the moon. It’s not like it has faced outright rejection. Moviegoers don’t mind the film but they come out of the theatre and say, ‘Thoda aur accha ho sakta tha’.”

When asked how much the film will collect in its lifetime, Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur predicted, “Dunki will collect Rs. 220-225 crores in its lifetime. It’ll definitely cross the Rs. 200 crore mark. It doesn’t have strong competition until Republic Day when Fighter releases. Also, on New Year, people will want to watch light, masti waali film.”

Atul Mohan and Girish Johar also agreed and felt that Merry Christmas, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif and which releases on January 12, is not a strong competition. Dunki, along with Salaar, has a clean run for a month, as a result. Girish said, “Dunki has a couple of weeks more to score. I hope it picks up over the second weekend. Rs. 200 crores plus is a given. Anything above Rs. 225 crores will be a bonus.”

Trade predicts that Prabhas-starrer Salaaar’s Hindi version will cross Adipurush’s Hindi collections; Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki will collect Rs. 220-225 crores in its lifetime

Salaar collected Rs. 87.75 crores in week 1 and experts feel that it’ll cross the Rs. 135.04 crore collections of Prabhas’ previous film, Adipurush. Raj Bansal stated, “Salaar will 100% collect more than Adipurush’s Hindi collections.”

Girish Johar explained why it didn’t perform up to the mark, “Marvel superhero fatigue has set in. A similar scenario might emerge with these action films. Throughout Salaar, the tempo is so high that you are always alert while watching it. You are not consuming or feeling the film. Action, obviously, is praiseworthy. But the audience is saying ‘Ab ho gaya yeh sab. Thoda dil bhi chhu ke jaao’. Thankfully, the twist in the climax worked. Or else, the film would have fallen flat.”

Calling the fight scenes as ‘tappa action’, Girish complained, “How many times you’ll see heroes attacking baddies with such force that they bounce and fall? If you see the film from a particular point of view, it just has slow-motion action. Nothing else.”

As for the lifetime, he said, “The response is muted and not as big as was expected from the makers of KGF – Chapter 2 (2022). Rs. 90 crores toh ho hi gaya hai. Rs. 135 crores toh ho hi jaayega.”

Atul Mohan exulted, “Rs. 125 crores would be the best case scenario for Salaar. After delivering a film like KGF – Chapter 2, agar aap Rs. 125 crores mein nipat jaate ho, toh phir kya faayda?”

Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi made his displeasure clear over the fight that erupted over the sharing of screens between the two films, “What happened last week was not business. It was ugly and uncalled for and showed our industry in a really bad light. It only led to a lose-lose situation. It hampered the business of both films. It’s not like one benefited over the other. Both lost out on the business because the advance just didn’t open on time beyond the national chains till the day of release. A lot of business, which could have happened due to these advance ticket sales, didn’t happen. I hope that we can leave aside our squabbles and egos and try to think a little more holistically and sensibly. Here, we literally witnessed a scenario where two production houses and distributors, who were at each other’s neck, ensured that hundreds of distributors all over the country, faced financial losses. That’s not healthy. I really hope we can be a little more sensible and mature in the year ahead so that such scenarios are handled with some dignity and grace.”

He signed off by saying, “I am not talking about these movies in particular. But movies that have hype and not-so-great content can benefit from advances opening up early and having a certain amount of sales. God forbid the advance don’t happen until release day and the content is not up to the mark, you miss out on a chunk of business that could have happened.”

>> Talks break off between striking Hollywood actors and studios

Talks have broken off between Hollywood actors and studios, killing any hopes that the strike by performers was coming to an end after nearly three months. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists resumed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in strike talks. When negotiations resumed with writers last month, their strike ended five days later, but similar progress was not made with the actors union. The studios walked away from talks after seeing the actors’ most recent proposal on Wednesday.

Jawan Frenzy: Dahi Handi To Fireworks, Could Shah Rukh Khan Fans Be More Excited?

A glimpse of Jawan fever. (courtesy: YouTube)

New Delhi:

It’s Jawan day, guys. Of course, we can’t keep calm. After all, it’s Shah Rukh Khan’s much-awaited action entertainer we are talking about. The Atlee directorial also stars Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi and Deepika Padukone (in an extended cameo). Fans have made a bee-line to theatres for the early morning shows. From people dancing to dhol beats to Jawan-themed cakes, several videos and pictures, from across India, have surfaced online which capture the craze and excitement of SRK fans. A page dedicated to Shah Rukh Khan, on X (formerly called Twitter),  has shared a series of videos, showcasing people grooving and dancing to the song,  Zinda Banda, inside the theatres. “Mental Mass Hysteria! The crowd has gone absolutely berserk as #ZindaBanda plays!!! Jawan tsunami is here and how!!!” read the tweet.

Now, take a look at how fans gave a “dahi handi” salute to ‘King Khan’ aka Shah Rukh Khan on Jawan release day.

As per fans, Jawan “is not just a movie, it’s a festival of excitement and love for SRK.” In the video, which was recorded outside theatres in Mumbai’s Andheri, fans take the SRK fever to a “whole new level with drums, dhol, and epic dancing.”

Some people, in Patna, arrived at theatres dressed as one of Shah Rukh Khan’s characters in Jawan. Can you guess which look? Of course, the bandage one.

In the Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh, SRK fans burst crackers to celebrate Jawan’s release.

Fans, from Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district, have turned “the streets into a carnival.” We don’t blame them.

Videos from outside Bangalore’s Urvashi theatre showcase fans turning the cinema into a “festival of fire colours.”

This scene outside theatres in Kolkata will make you scream ‘Shah Rukh…Shah Rukh.

Now, take a look at Jawan-themed cake.

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan also reacted to one of the videos from the film’s early morning show. In the clip, fans could be seen chanting “India ki shaan Shah Rukh Khan” in unison. Re-tweeting the post, SRK wrote, “Love you boys and girls I hope you enjoy the entertainment. I kept awake to see you go to the theatre. Big love and thanks.”

Jawan is produced by Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.

30 Years of Maya Memsaab EXCLUSIVE: Deepa Sahi gives a RARE interview; says “Shah Rukh Khan was a child at heart and a THOROUGH gentleman”; opens up on lovemaking scenes: “I did get giggly at first but then you got to do what you got to do” : Bollywood News – Bollywood Hungama

The acclaimed film Maya Memsaab (1993) recently completed 30 years, on July 2. The film featured Deepa Sahi in a lead role while Shah Rukh Khan, Raj Babbar and Farooq Sheikh appeared in supporting roles. The actress delivered a stupendous performance in this Ketan Mehta-directorial, which was adapted from the French novel, ‘Madame Bovary’. Deepa Sahi, who debuted with Govind Nihalani’s Party (1984) delivered memorable performances in several films. She later turned producer and even director. Moreover, she also runs Maya Movies and a successful animation company, Cosmos-Maya. Incidentally, both companies are named after Deepa Sahi’s character in Maya Memsaab.

30 Years of Maya Memsaab EXCLUSIVE: Deepa Sahi gives a RARE interview; says “Shah Rukh Khan was a child at heart and a THOROUGH gentleman”; opens up on lovemaking scenes: “I did get giggly at first but then you got to do what you got to do”

The actress-entrepreneur has been away from the public eye for a long time. But on our request, she agreed to give a rare, exclusive interview to Bollywood Hungama about Maya Memsaab, working with her hubby Ketan Mehta and a lot more.

Ketan Mehta said that you were the one who recommended the book ‘Madame Bovary’ to him. When he decided to cast you, were you nervous or scared since it was quite a bold character for the early 90s? Or were you excited to take up the challenge?
I thought I was not experienced enough in life and should wait a few years to do such a complex role. But the director insisted that he could not imagine anyone else doing it. So, I was like, “What the heck? If the director is so confident, why am I being diffident”? I loved the imagery in the book, some of which stayed with me. For example, I can’t recall the exact phrase, but it compared a woman’s desires to a veil (and virtually every society has a veil as part of a woman’s attire); the veil that is “free floating at one end and tied at another!” Also. Ketan wrote some amazing dialogues which are so deep. For instance, about Maya, he says “Samajhna to asambhav hai, sambhav hai anubhav ho jaaye” or “sapno ko chhoote hi, unka rang kyon ud jaata hai?” These are life-defining lines!

How was it working with Shah Rukh Khan? It was his first film…
He is the most energetic and dedicated actor with an instinctive cinematic sense. One can’t learn such things. They need to be part of the personality and he surely had an instinct for that. Besides the fact that he is a thorough gentleman and caring for everyone on the sets, it is his energy that is the most infectious! Also, what I liked is that he is a kid at heart. He was always playing some game or the other and he’s also a big computer freak, which is what I am. Even then, he was into playing games on the computer.

How was your equation and experience of working with Raj Babbar and Farooq Sheikh?
Raj Babbar was a senior respected star already then and so was Farooq. As actors, they were far more experienced than me. Farooq was very disciplined and kind.

Ketan Mehta once said in an interview, “I am not that short-tempered now, but I remember when I would shoot earlier, all these actors including Shah Rukh Khan in Maya Memsaab must have been struck by my matchbox throws at them like missiles”! How was it working with such a hot-headed director?
He exaggerates! He does lose his temper in his passion once in a while, but he is hardly someone who can be called ‘hot-headed’. The best part of working with Ketan is that he pushes you to excel and has the savviest interpretations of characters and their mercurial quality. Also, he gives actors a long rope and loves them to improvise and add what he calls ‘the magic’. He understands human behaviour like no one I have met ever and is the most stimulating to work with.

Was it tough for you and Shah Rukh Khan to perform the lovemaking scene? It was quite bold even by today’s standards…
Well, I did get giggly at first (a sign of being uncomfortable) but then you got to do what you got to do. I did brood a bit about being misunderstood at the time of release, but I think 99.99 % of people got the intention. In fact, I remember at a terrace party, someone told Shakti Samanta ji, who was the Chief of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) then, that he was partial to allowing Ketan Mehta bold scenes but imposed cuts for even some dance moves for the others. And he graciously replied, “You make a piece of poetry Ketan has made, and I promise not to impose any cuts!” That was amazing!

Do you recall any memorable feedback that came your way after the release of Maya Memsaab in cinemas or film festivals?
Oh yes. There were many! It began on the day of the first public screening. I did not wait for the end and came back to the hotel. I recall I was at Ashoka Hotel in Delhi. An hour after the screening, there was a knock on my door and about 30 women came into my suite. They sat and spoke about how they had come from the screening and simply had to meet me, and it was the first film that ‘understood’ their inner core. They all had incidents to tell, and one even cried at how her ideals had let her down!

Then, I recall in Mumbai, two men in traditional dresses came all the way from Rajasthan, wearing their dhotiesangrakahas and pagris and sat in my living room. They told me how they had seen the film 17 times! They said it was about them. This is amazing as Flaubert, when asked about the book, had said “Madame Bovary, c’est moi” which means, “It’s about me”.

I have yet to visit a country where someone has not called me “Maya” from across the road or on the street. The funny thing was that I read about a dish in a Delhi hotel menu which was called ‘Maya Memsaab ki pasand’. I had so many offers to launch soaps and perfumes named after Maya Memsaab but I was never into all that. So, I refused.

Do you have any plans to return to acting? You were phenomenal in Maya Memsaab and other films, and it’ll be great to have you back on screen…
Been there done that! I am not interested anymore. Even then I was too restless to be an actor as it involves long hours of waiting and I also hated getting make-up done and dressing up. Now I am too occupied with my new media technology hubs. Yes, I do miss live-action as I have been involved in our animation studio for so many years. So, I am producing some digital series currently. But I am not acting. At one point, I was interested in playing Indira Gandhi as I find her life fascinating and her contradictions really intriguing but not anymore.

How has the MAAC and Maya Movies journey been?
My life has been good. Time has flown like crazy! I thought I would spend 6 months setting up an animation studio and then getting professionals to run it. But it consumed all of my life nearly as there were no animators when we started which we did not know. It meant setting up schools to feed the studio. We ended up having over 70 franchises and 1600 animators in-house! And films became secondary as it took up so much time. However, all was good as Ketan makes everything good for me! I’m an absolute Ketan fan and if he tells me to jump off a cliff, I would, for him! And this is strange as when we began together, I told him, I am too restless and don’t think I will last long term. He said, “We will be together as long as we want and when we don’t want we shall see”. And as you know now it’s 30 years!

Would you like to direct again?
No. That was a lark but it’s too strenuous and demanding. My real passions are travelling, cats, and the latest phenomenon, AI!

If a remake of Maya Memsaab is made, which actor would you like to see playing the role of Maya, Dr Charu Das, Rudra and Lalit?
Ha ha! I am not answering that one; it means trouble!

Lastly, you have a close bond with Ketan Mehta. He said once in an interview, “I must be the craziest man she has met in her life, but I suppose she likes my madness, my films and my world view”. Your thoughts?
As I said, in Ketan, I have a perfect soulmate. He understands me perfectly, gives me the perfect space in life, and does not try to lead my life or dictate my life. I can’t survive with anyone dictating to me and he is the one who has never ever told me what to do, eat, wear, think, when to travel. He has never said “do this” or “don’t do this”. Nor do I do that to him, as I believe only if you give space can you demand it! And I have already warned him that he cannot get rid of me, the next 7 lives at least! He is a combination of Dennis the Menace and Superman (mentally) and has the same spirit of adventure that I have. The best is that he is the most non-mercenary man I have met, with never a bad word for anyone!

Yes, we are both crazy. I remember we had a pact that on every first monsoon shower, whatever the time, we have to drop whatever we are doing, meet up at Marine Drive and dance in the first rain together. We did that all for the first 10 years that we were together, till we got too damned busy! My mother often said “Ek hi thaili ke chatte batte” to us but in a good way!

Shah Rukh Khan allegedly begged former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede to not implicate Aryan in drugs bust case in leaked WhatsApp chats: “His spirit will be destroyed because of some vested people” : Bollywood News – Bollywood Hungama

It seems like the cruise drug bust case of 2021 by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) which left superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan in jail for 28 days is still very much in the spotlight. After Junior Khan was bailed and the charges against him were dropped, the case officer Sameer Wankhede has been in the news. The former NCB officer, who led the drugs bust case and has been accused of attempting to allegedly extort a whopping Rs. 25 crore from Shah Rukh Khan, produced the conversations on WhatsApp that he allegedly had with SRK.

Shah Rukh Khan allegedly begged former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede to not implicate Aryan in drugs bust case in leaked WhatsApp chats: “His spirit will be destroyed because of some vested people”

Now, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has accused Wankhede of allegedly extorting money from Shah Rukh Khan. Wankhede has filed a petition in court in response to the case against him and submitted a series of chats which he allegedly exchanged with a person named “Shahrukh Khan”.  As per a report by India Today TV, they have accessed the alleged WhatsApp chats between Wankhede and SRK in which the superstar begs to let go off Aryan Khan and not implicate him in a case that will leave him broken. The first part of the text reads, “Get your guys to go slow for Gods sake. I swear I will stand by you at all times to come and assist you with what all you are trying to achieve good. It’s a man’s promise and you know me enough to know I am good for it. I beg you to please have mercy in me and my family. We are a simple set of people and my son has been a bit wayward, but he doesn’t deserve being in a jail like a hardened criminal. You also know that. Please have a heart man, please I beg you.”

The next part reads, “I beg you man, please don’t let him be in that jail. He will break as a human being. His spirit will be destroyed because of some vested people. You promised you will reform my child not put him in a place where he may come out completely battered and broken.”

“If in any way without losing your integrity as an officer of law, you can help with whatever manner possible please. I will always be indebted. I don’t know the technicalities but if the department in charge feels all is ok and to your satisfaction. If then your authority furnishes a ‘ short reply ‘ with whatever conditions your team may have. I promise you whatever cooperation you would need from him will be done to the best of his abilities. Just please consider this request favourably it will be a huge favour because the family just wants him home, and not get stamped with having been a convict in a notorious prison. It will really help with his future and that’s why I am making this, beyond reasonable request as a father. I hope you consider it please, for his sake,” the text continues.

He adds, “Please tell them to go easy man and let me get my son home. Please. There is nothing more I can say or do but beg you. You have noticed my behaviour through all this. You know I would never stand by anything against what you are doing. I believed it when you said you are thinking of Aryan as your own and want to make him a better person. I haven’t done anything to not help my son get that reformation. I haven’t been in press. I haven’t made a statement. I have just believed in your goodness. Please please don’t let me down as a father.”

“As a good man, why would you subject him to this for some selfish people doing what they are doing. I promise you I will go to them and beg them to not say another word in front of you. Will use everything in my power to make sure they listen and retract whatever they have said. I promise you I will do all of it and won’t shirk away from begging them to stop. But please send my son home. You also know in your heart it’s been a bit too harsh for him by now. Please please I beg you as a father,” the text concludes.

In an earlier report in 2021, a witness of the NCB named Prabhakar Raghoji Sail recalled a call that was made by other witnesses KP Gosavi and Sanvile D’Souza to Shah Rukh Khan, demanding Rs. 25 crores from the superstar after the NCB authorities arrested Aryan Khan in the case. In the report, Sail had also asserted that after much deliberation, they had settled to Rs. 18 crores, followed by which the amount was to be distributed among NCB officers. He had said to Indian Express, “Out of the total Rs. 18 crores, Rs. 8 crore was meant for Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede while the balance amount was to be shared among them.”

As per recent reports, the CBI officers claim that the NCB officer Sameer Wankhede’s recent expenditure on foreign trips and luxurious purchases have ‘not been clearly justified’ when compared to his ‘declared income’. These reports suggest that Wankhede has once again been accused of corruption and bribery over his failure to submit an explanation regarding his recent over-the-top expenses. Although Sail passed away last year due to heart failure, the same allegations have been placed by the CBI officers after their raids at Wankhede’s residence.

Along with Sameer Wankhede, Vishwa Vijay Singh, and Ashish Ranjan too have been accused in the case along with KP Gosavi and Sanvile D’Souza for allegedly threatening the Khan family and using the Aryan Khan arrest case to extort a lumpsum from the wealthy film producer-entrepreneurs. The CBI has accused Gosavi of being given the privileges of accompanying the accused, coming to the NCB office even after the raid etc. because of which he even took selfies with Aryan Khan that went viral across platforms and even recorded his voice. The CBI observed that these privileges are never offered to independent witnesses. As per current reports, the CBI claims that Wankhede had given permission to Vishwa Singh for letting Gosavi handle the accused.

Jio Studios Announces 62 Indian Movies and TV Series: The Full List

Jio Studios has unveiled its expansive lineup of new movies and web series, marking the single largest slate ever produced by an Indian studio. While the production company notes over 100 fresh projects in its lineup, it has only teased 62 for now, spanning several languages and genres, and starring the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, R Madhavan, Kriti Sanon, Shraddha Kapoor, Randeep Hooda, and more. None of them has any release details for now, but they will be spread evenly across theatres and direct-to-app (OTT). Jio Studios also dropped a sizzle reel for its upcoming movies and shows, with all content expected to eventually land on the JioCinema app.

“We are in the most exciting and eventful phase of Indian entertainment, with storytelling taking centre stage in an era of explosive digital disruption,” Jyoti Deshpande, President, RIL Media and Content Business said in a prepared statement. “We have actively partnered with some of the best names in the business and newcomers alike to reach this day, when a staggering and exciting 100 content assets have been produced, ready to be showcased to the world. Our vision is to power stories that are from, by and for India and Bharat, tell stories that not only entertain but also have a purpose, partner with storytellers in every Indian language and take these stories mainstream.”

Leading the lineup is Rajkumar Hirani’s (3 Idiots) Dunki, which is reportedly based on the concept of donkey flights — a method used by Indian immigrants to illegally move to foreign countries. The film is slated to release this year and stars Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu in the lead roles. It also marks the first collaboration between Khan and Hirani, the latter of whom is known to incorporate dark comedy in his films. Meanwhile, Shahid Kapoor (Farzi) has two films lined up from Jio Studios.

Up first is Bloody Daddy, an Indian adaptation of the 2011 French film Nuit Blanche — or Sleepless Night — where a police detective gets off on the wrong foot with a drug dealer, causing his son to get held as a hostage. The film will reportedly release on Jio Cinema. Then there’s an untitled romance film with Kriti Sanon, brief glimpses of which can be seen in the sizzle reel.

Dinesh Vijan’s absurd horror-comedy universe is being expanded with sequels for both Stree and Bhediya, bringing back the original cast members. 2022’s Bhediya saw Varun Dhawan as a werewolf looking to navigate his newfound powers while trying not to devour his close friends. The film’s mid-credits scene tied into 2018’s Stree, which followed Shraddha Kapoor as a witch who hunts unsuspecting men at night. We’ve also got the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Section 84, Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan-led Zara Bachke, and Hisaab Barabar, in which R Madhavan appears to be playing a lawyer.

Nana Patekar makes his OTT debut with Laal Batti, a political thriller helmed by Prakash Jha (Gangaajal), whereas Randeep Hooda appears in Inspector Avinash, which charts the real-life super cop Avinash Mishra’s struggles against the rise of crime in 1997 Uttar Pradesh. Even Indian rapper Raftaar is making his debut in a streaming series with Bajao, which seems to be a unique blend of hip-hop culture and street crime, set against the backdrop of disco lights at a club.

Jio Studios is set to dominate in the regional space as well, offering movies and TV series in multiple languages including Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, and what the press release calls ‘South’. It also announced a multi-year collaboration with SVF Entertainment to create a ‘new era of blockbusters’ in Bengali cinema.

‘The Romantics’ docu-series review: A beginner’s guide to popular Hindi cinema

A celebration of mainstream Hindi cinema and a father and son’s passion for creative excellence, The Romantics tells the success story of Yash Raj Films to a global audience.

More than a heartfelt tribute to the ‘King of Romance,’ the biggest contribution of  The Romantics is that it captures a force called Aditya Chopra in flesh and blood. It traces how the maverick producer-director not only took the legacy of his visionary father forward, but also turned a family-run production house into a vibrant world-class studio that withstood the might of multinational behemoths by making films of different genres and budgets, and giving opportunities to diverse creative voices. Unlike the fashion industry, it saved the identity of its brand of  swadeshi entertainment from globalisation of emotions, by doing a smart mix and match of ideas.

The Romantics

Director: Smriti Mundhra

No.of episodes: 4

Cast: Aditya Chopra, Shahrukh Khan, Uday Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherji, Ranveer Singh, Pamela Chopra

Storyline: A docu-series about the legacy of director Yash Chopra and the production company Yash Raj Films

Directed by Smriti Mundhra in talking heads format, the four-part series provides an insight into how the father and son duo understood the pulse of a diverse country besotted with cinema and churned out trendsetting films over decades.

From the Nehruvian idealism of  Dhool Ka Phool and  Dharmputra to the rise of the ‘Angry Young Man’ in  Deewaar and  Trishul at the time of Total Revolution and the Emergency, to engaging the NRIs and westward-looking audience in the post-liberalisation phase with Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, the series juxtaposes some of the benchmark Yash Raj Films in the context of the changing socio-political conditions and the changing economy of the country. If  Bunty Aur Babli and  Dhoom captured the urge to explore the youthful urges in the hinterland and urban India,  Chak De! India channeled the growing frustration  among women in a deeply patriarchal society.

Right from  Daag to  Lamhe, unorthodox love stories with strong female characters with an agency to decide for themselves remained the hallmark of Chopra’s creative universe. As Amitabh Bachchan says, even when he was holding guns, Chopra never lost sight of the roses on the canvas and stood by his instinct; it also reflected in  Kabhi Kabhie that followed  Deewaar. Years later, when the market became flooded with poor copies of action and violence that he unleashed on-screen, Chopra created  Chandni which changed the course of Hindi cinema in the ‘90s. If Chopra had Bachchan, Aditya cultivated Shah Rukh Khan to impersonate his idea of romance where love required parental consent.  The Romantics carries interesting snippets of how they came together on the sets of  Darr, Chopra’s dodgy attempt to humanise a stalking monster.

The series gives credit to Chopra’s wife, Pamela, for nurturing this softer side of the filmmaker and helping him develop a gaze that was always empathetic towards female characters. There are visuals of Mumtaz in the series, but no attempt has been made to clarify the actor’s bond with the director. Curiously, the makers don’t feel the need to look for a feminine force behind Aditya; in fact, he doesn’t even talk about the role of women in his life.

Shah Rukh Khan and director Yash Chopra

One of the questions that the docu-series addresses is the creative conflict between Chopra and Aditya. The son looks more prosaic in front of his poetic father. Right from  Dhool Ka Phool and  Waqt, the quirks of fate played an important role in Chopra’s films and life. While Chopra, who broke away from the long, imposing shadow of his brother B.R Chopra to start from scratch, Aditya is shown as someone who learnt his craft on the sets of his father, and by watching films and painstakingly recording audience responses and box-office numbers. As he set out to explore tales beyond the love triangles that his father explored from every possible angle, it seems Aditya desperately wanted to crack the code of box-office success. For a time period it surprisingly looked achievable, but eventually as he creatively aged, perhaps faster than his father did, Aditya realises that his mentor was right. Perhaps the series is an outcome of him nodding his head to the ephemeral nature of show business.

Having said that, his efforts to institutionalise creativity in an industry that was run more like a mom-and-pop shop, by giving chances to outside talent, are commendable. He nips the nepotism debate by saying that audience support is critical as he could not make a star out of his brother Uday despite everything at his disposal.

The series also takes into account the failures and consternations in between, but like its subjects, it doesn’t scratch much beneath the surface. Like the Chopras, it dresses up deeper truths and anguish in pristine emotions and catchy quotes.

One expected more information on the efforts of Uday, who comes across as completely different from his goofy on-screen image, to take the Yash Raj stamp to Hollywood and how big projects like  Paani fell through. There is no discussion on  Veer Zaara, the film where Chopra gauged the impact of the Partition of Punjab and whose Indo-Pak variants continue to drive YRF’s spy universe.

One also missed some important creative voices like Javed Akhtar who not only co-wrote some of his most successful films, but also turned a lyricist at his insistence with  Silsala. His co-writer Salim Khan hardly gets any screen time. Nor does Salman Khan who has given some of the biggest hits to YRF in  Sultan and Ek Tha Tiger. Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, who, along with Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, gave wings to Chopra’s poetic imagination with popular compositions that were rooted in classical music, is also sorely missed. Notably, the series talks about a concerted attempt to break the YRF image of a celebration of a well-fed Punjabi family, but Aditya’s critically acclaimed productions like  Rocket SinghTitli, and  Sandeep Aur Pinki Faraar don’t find mention. Is it still only about numbers and song and dance routines?

Right from the first episode, it is clear that Smriti seeks to present popular Hindi cinema in the light of Yash Raj Films to a non-Indian audience. So, the idea of song-and-dance to tell our stories and how deeply embedded cinema is in our lives sounds a bit redundant to the Indian audience. The Indian film fraternity’s distaste for the term Bollywood is too well known to be discussed at length. Moreover, the sameness of the talking heads format makes it a tad verbose and predictable. Still, coming at a time when  Pathaan has once again put the YRF at the pole position, it is an important document on popular Hindi cinema.

With ‘Pathaan,’ Shah Rukh Khan comes out on top of the ‘Raktabeej’ of hate

Beyond the stylish blend of unrestrained action, glamour, and punchlines delivered at a breakneck pace, Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan is a minefield of symbolism and allegorical references that make the film more than the sum of its parts.

An answer to those who want to paint the country in one colour, it has emerged as an antidote to the cancel culture. Anand is the grandson of eminent screenwriter Inder Raj Anand, an active member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association, who collaborated with Raj Kapoor on landmark films like Anari and Sangam and wrote Kalia and Shahenshah for Amitabh Bachchan.

In Pathaan, the writing refrains from demonising nationalities and religions and for a tentpole, the characters are not cardboard. Just before Partition, Prithviraj Kapoor mounted a play called Pathan that appealed for communal harmony when it was becoming increasingly impossible to believe each other. Here an Indian spy and an ex-ISI agent get over their trust deficit to save innocent lives.

After a bumper opening week, Khan likened the main actors — Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, and himself to Amar, Akbar, and Anthony, the iconic characters of the Manmohan Desai film that remains a benchmark in bringing out the secular character of the film industry. But in the expanding spy universe of Yash Raj Films, we have a spy without a first name taking on a rogue agent without a surname to safeguard the country from a weapon of mass destruction, named after a monster of Hindu mythology. One is an orphan who is brought up by the country and the other is called Jim perhaps because it rhymes with gym, the soul station of Abraham!

SHASHANK PARADE

Using the delicious liberties that a spy-thriller allows, writers Sridhar Raghavan and Abbas Tyrewala who have had a reputation of writing layered narratives in a popular idiom have shot down the possibilities of the fragile souls getting hurt and along the way have intelligently intertwined the stories of Pathaan and Shah Rukh Khan. It is hard to delineate where one segues into the other.

Unlike his contemporaries, Khan makes for a different kind of action hero. He is slightly more realistic because he does not mind getting beaten up on the screen. In fact, those who have followed his work would know that he comes into form only after he gets dirty and stained with blood.

Before the release of Pathaan, his real-life image was that of a people’s star pushed into a corner by a series of box office duds. Last year, his son had to spend days in jail on drug charges that turned out to be false and fabricated. It was followed by the boycott wave because of the ‘Muslim’ title of his comeback vehicle after the pandemic and took the form of a politically motivated controversy around the song Besharm Rang.

The repeated reference to the Japanese art of kintsugi in the film underscores Shah Rukh Khan’s ability to join broken hearts and bring people together

The repeated reference to the Japanese art of kintsugi in the film underscores Shah Rukh Khan’s ability to join broken hearts and bring people together

Khan, who loves to be snarky, maintained a dignified silence all through and focused on what he does best on the screen to get the audience by his side: fighting back after taking body blows. His return is much like the opening scene of the film where Pathaan announces his presence with “Zinda Hai” in a gravelly voice.

The repeated reference to the Japanese art of kintsugi in the film, first as a hobby and then as a philosophy, underscores Khan’s ability to join broken hearts and bring people together. Like Pathaan, he lost his parents early in life and the outsider became a star because of the love of audience.

Hailing from Peshawar, Khan’s father, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan was a follower of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan who fought for an independent and united India. So, when Afghanistan turns out to be the second home of Pathaan, it rings a bell, not only in India but in the neighbourhood that goes up to West Asia as well, and perhaps explains the film’s unprecedented success in the region which was once known for the non-violent struggle of Khudai Khidmatgars and of course the genial Kabuliwala.

John Abraham and Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Pathaan’

John Abraham and Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Pathaan’

And when he tells Jim and his gang that if they would party in Pathaan’s house, he would come for mehman nawazi (hospitality), it seems he is answering to his detractors who intruded into his personal space.

Moreover, the narrative is posited in a world where terrorism has no religion, and like many businesses these days, it is outsourced to a third party that has no direct interest in the conflict. It goes with the idea that many observers hold that organisations like Daesh are not Islamic groups in the true sense and are just a proxy of the vested interests in the West that have been created to demonise the religion and keep the oil-rich region in turmoil. Perhaps, that is why there is no mention of the U.S. and Israel in the film, and Russia is shown as a friendly ally.

In the crucial meeting of two agents in a moving train, before Tiger, his scarf (which has a startling resemblance to the Palestinian keffiyeh) makes an entry into the frame, and notably in the hands of Salman, it becomes a weapon to slay the enemies.

Over the years, a secular, well-meaning Muslim character in Hindi films is one who can hold a glass of wine. Rubina Mohsin carries forward that cliché. Evidently, a Pakistani Muslim girl in a revealing saffron outfit does not hurt the sentiments of the prude boycott crowd which was, ironically, burning Padukone’s effigies just a few weeks back. And the conservative fatwa issuing mullah cannot take umbrage because she drinks like a fish. A combination of glamour and guts, Rubina demands a separate film.

SRK and Deepika Padukone in a still from the film

SRK and Deepika Padukone in a still from the film

It might be carrying forward the Veer-Zara template in a patriarchal society, but Pathaan and Rubina’s team provides the Pakistani audience something to chew on as well. The cancer-stricken Pakistani general who outsources the operation against India admits that “the job cannot be done by a Khuda Ka Banda (believer) and that they had to make friends with a Shaitan (monster).”

Pathaan and Jim offer two sides of a soldier. Jim, a rogue Indian agent, reminds us that he has no love lost for Pakistan, does not believe in the concept of fatherland and motherland, and in the future, he could very well offer his services to India for the right price. Both Pathaan and Jim understand each other’s position. In fact, during their first meeting, Jim says that in another world, they would have been friends and Pathaan tells his superiors that they made a good soldier their enemy by not lending a helping hand during his personal crisis.

And above all, when the film distinguishes between the nation being a mother or a lover, it gives a voice to the current dispensation’s idea of nationalism. A son cannot betray his mother but love for the beloved is based on reciprocity. During the climax when Pathaan paraphrases John F Kennedy’s iconic statement: Ask not what the country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country, it underscores the ruling party’s increasing emphasis on citizens’ duties than their rights.

No wonder, with such a rich ammunition of allegory, Pathaan has annihilated the Raktabeej of hate. At least for the time being.

Pathaan Preview: Everything You Need To Know About Shah Rukh Khan’s Big Release

Shah Rukh Khan shared this picture. (courtesy: iamsrk)

Guys, make some noise. Shah Rukh Khan is back in Pathaan style. His much-awaited film, Pathaan, has hit the theatres, and no one can keep calm. That’s the charm of everyone’s favourite King Khan. We still remember the day when Shah Rukh Khan shared the release date and said, “Jaldi milte hai Pathaan se.”  He wanted us to “remember the date”, and we all did.  Right from the superhit songs – Besharam Rang and Jhoome Jo Pathaan – to the action sequences,   the Siddharth Anand film has kept fans glued to the screens.  Pathaan, which also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, is Shah Rukh Khan’s return to a leading role four years after Zero.

On Pathaan‘s release day, we have decided take a look at the advance bookings, screen count and what the stars have to say about the film.

“Terrific Advance Booking”

Pathaanis expected to roar big time at the box office. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh reports that the film has sold 5.5 lakh tickets for its first day show. The data was calculated by the figures received from multiplex chains PVR, INOX and Cinepolis.

Massive Screen Count

Pathaan has created history by becoming the first Indian film to be released in more than 100 countries. The Shah Rukh Khan film will be released in 5,200 screens at home and 2,500 screens abroad.

Besharam Rang Controversy

This was the first song released by the makers of Pathaan. Be it Shah Rukh Khan’s abs or Deepika Padukone’s dance moves, the track became an instant hit. But it also became controversial over Deepika’s orange bikini with complaints being filed as well as calls for boycott. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had advised certain modifications in the film, including in its songs, and submit a revised version.

Prasoon Joshi, the chairman of CBFC, told NDTV, “As far as costume colours are concerned, the committee has stayed unbiased. When the film comes out, the reflection of this balanced approach will be clear to everyone.”

Deepika Padukone’s  “Most Difficult Workout, Diet”

As per the makers, Deepika Padukone “is a total “femme fatale” in #Pathaan as she “transforms into a spy with a license to kill!” She looks amazing in the songs and the trailer but little did we know about the behind-the-scenes hard work. In a video released by Yash Raj Films,  Deepika said, “It’s probably the hardest I’ve ever worked to get in any kind of shape for a film, for a character. So I’m not going to get into the specifics of what the routine was but I can tell you that it was one of the most difficult workout regimes, one of the most difficult diets that I was on.”

Deepika Padukone also spoke about her “favourite” co-star Shah Rukh Khan. “Shah Rukh and I have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to work in some incredible movies starting with ‘Om Shanti Om‘! I’m collaborating with my most favourite co-star Shah Rukh. We have a beautiful relationship and I think the audience always sees that in the movies that we do.”

John Abraham Is “A Cold-Blooded, Menacing, Evil Force Of Nature”

John Abraham will be seen as the leader of a terror organisation called Outfit X in Pathaan. Talking about his character, John said, “”You can’t try and act cool, you have to be cool.”

On his face-off with Shah Rukh Khan in the film, John said, “When Pathaan clashes with Jim, expect fireworks, expect something out of the ordinary, expect larger than life action, an edge of the seat kind of thriller experience.”

Talking about Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback, he added, “I don’t think just the entire nation, I think the entire world wants to see Shah Rukh Khan on screen including myself. And I think he more than delivered the goods. He’s fantastic in this film.”

Shah Rukh Khan, “Action Hero” – Finally

It was Shah Rukh Khan’s dream to play an action hero on-screen. We aren’t saying this, the makers of Pathaan have announced it on Twitter. “King Khan’s 32-year-old dream comes true as he turns an action hero in Pathaan,” read the text attached to a video released by Yash Raj on Twitter.

In the clip, Shah Rukh Khan made quite a few revelations. Of course, SRK spoke about co-star Deepika Padukone, who, as per the actor, appears “tougher” than him in the action sequences. He said, “You need someone of the stature of Deepika Padukone. To be able to pull off song sequence like Besharam Rang and then you know to be able to do an action where she takes a guy and pulls him right over herself and beats him. And, you believe it. She is tough enough to do that. I think she is tougher than me in the action scenes. So, that kind of a combination could have only been achieved with someone like Deepika.”

In Pathaan, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone play the roles of covert agents who work together to save India. John Abraham is Jim, the leader of a private terror group, whose only mission is to destroy India.
