>>Cannes 2024 highlights

The Indian film contingent not only dazzled at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival but also had a milestone outing with eight films. Payal Kapadia’s debut fiction feature, All We Imagine As Lightthe first Indian production in the competition in three decades — received an enthusiastic eight-minute standing ovation. Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal’s debut production Girls Will Be Girls was screened while Sahana Goswami and Sandhya Suri’s Santoshpremiered in the Un Certain Regard section.

A restored version of Shyam Benegal’s Manthan was showcased under the Cannes Classics segment. Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov’s Hindi-language film The Shamelessalso premiered at the festival. Producer Guneet Monga and Women In Film Los Angeles (WIF) launched a new initiative to support women filmmakers in India and the Indian Ambassador to France invited global filmmakers to explore business opportunities in India.

Bollywood celebrities fulfilled their democratic duty by stepping out to vote in Phase 5 of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Exercising their franchise in the nationwide elections, Hindi film stars led by example and urged fellow citizens to vote. Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Rajkummar Rao, Jahnvi Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor voted on Monday. Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, who are expecting their first child, also stepped out to exercise their democratic right. Other celebrities who were photographed casting their votes included Dharmendra, Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Sanya Malhotra, Suniel Shetty, filmmakers Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar Ashutosh Gowariker, Kabir Khan and others

Rajinkanth’s ‘Coolie’ makers in trouble as Ilaiyaraaja issues legal notice

Ace composer Ilaiyaraaja issued a legal notice to Sun Pictures over the allegedly illegal use of the song ‘Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa’ from the 1983 film ‘Thanga Magan’ in their upcoming Rajinikanth-starrer ‘Coolie’. The notice states the use of the song as an intentional breach of the composer’s rights. It demands Sun Pictures to either obtain consent from Ilaiyaraaja or to remove the track from ‘Coolie’.

Deepika Padukone has been selected as one of the presenters at the upcoming BAFTA Awards alongside celebrities like former England football star David Beckham, singer Dua Lipa and Cate Blanchett. Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Margot Robbie, Cillian Murphy and other Oscar nominees caught up at the Beverly Hilton for the annual Academy Award nominees luncheon.

The Directors Guild Awards took place this week and Christopher Nolan was awarded the top prize for ‘Oppenheimer’ while Celine Song got an award for first-time directorial achievement for her romantic drama ‘Past Lives’. Veteran actor Sigourney Weaver won the International Goya Award in recognition of what the Spanish Film Academy dubbed an impressive career, during which she brought to life “independent, complex and strong female characters”. Actor Brad Pitt presented his friend and actor Bradley Cooper with one of the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s top honours, Outstanding Performer of the Year, for his work starring as Leonard Bernstein in the biopic ‘Maestro’.

Talks have broken off between Hollywood actors and studios, killing any hopes that the strike by performers was coming to an end after nearly three months. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists resumed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in strike talks. When negotiations resumed with writers last month, their strike ended five days later, but similar progress was not made with the actors union. The studios walked away from talks after seeing the actors’ most recent proposal on Wednesday.
