John Carpenter’s 18 Best Films Ranked and Where to Stream Them | Wealth of Geeks

John Carpenter is more than a simple film director. A talented artist, a gifted musician, an inspired writer, and a visionary director, he’s a filmmaker in the same catch-all manner as Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton.

Overseeing his movies from their inception into the final editing stages, Carpenter is responsible for writing, producing, directing, and even composing the music for some of the most decade-defining films of the ’70s and ’80s. Throughout his career, he’s redefined horror, action, and science fiction narratives, his place in genre films as clear as his contemporaries George Romero, Wes Craven, and David Cronenberg.

As fantastic as many of Carpenter’s films are, like any director, some of his movies are often regarded in a far more favorable light than others. From his earliest career successes to his later failures in the ’90s and 2000s, here is every one of John Carpenter’s movies, ranked from best to worst.

1. Halloween

On the fifteenth anniversary of the night he murdered his sister, hulking serial killer Michael Myers (Nick Castle) escapes from a mental health facility. Donning a mask, Myers returns to his hometown on Halloween night, menacing a teenage babysitter (Jamie Lee Curtis) as his psychiatrist (Donald Pleasence) avidly searches for him.

Whether Halloween is truly Carpenter’s greatest movie is debatable, but it’s most assuredly the most important in his entire filmography. Not only did the movie help elevate Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis to career stardom, and it introduced a new genre to viewers, creating the prototypical slasher that we know today. Without it, the names Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Chucky, or Ghostface would be absent from pop culture and our collective consciousness.

2. The Thing

At a remote Antarctic outpost, a team of American researchers is hunted by an alien creature able to take the physical form of its victims.

Halloween might be Carpenter’s most famous film, but The Thing is arguably his singular best accomplishment as a director. Creating an eerie atmosphere of suspense that never lets up, Carpenter builds a sense of dread that few horror movies can possess. As a result, its place in the horror community is without equal, its reputation rightfully only growing more hallowed with time.

3. Escape From New York

In a dystopian future where crime rates have risen dramatically in the U.S., Manhattan has been converted into a massive prison complex where the inmates run free. After Air Force One crashes in the city, the government sends former war hero-turned-bank robber Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) to rescue the President (Donald Pleasence).

In a decade characterized by amazing sci-fi films like The Terminator and RoboCop, Escape from New York stands apart as Carpenter’s greatest achievement in its action alone. Constructing a nightmarish version of America from the ground up, Carpenter forever left his mark on the genre with this film, directly inspiring everything from Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror to Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series.

4. Assault on Precinct 13

Channeling his fierce love for Howard Hawks, Carpenter took the premise of a Western and moved into the then-contemporary ’70s. Retaining the overall narrative tone of Hawks’ most famous movie, Rio Bravo, and crossing it with the socially tumultuous climate of its setting, the resulting film helped gain Carpenter industry recognition, clearing the way for his breakthrough Halloween.

5. They Live

They Live is the last great film in Carpenter’s career and one of his strangest. A clever satirization of capitalism and mass consumer culture, They Live belongs to the same category of weird, over-the-top, counterculture ’80s films as Repo Man. It could have been an unmitigated disaster, but Carpenter’s comic screenplay and Piper’s unexpectedly charismatic performance helped pull the whole thing off.

6. Big Trouble in Little China

After his best friend’s (Dennis Dun) fiancée is kidnapped by a centuries-old wizard (James Hong), truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) becomes embroiled in a high-stakes gang war of fantastic proportions in San Francisco’s Chinatown.

The most absurdist and comic-heavy of Carpenter and Russell’s films together, Big Trouble in Little China has also earned what is probably the largest and most dedicated cult following of Carpenter’s movies. Carpenter has always been an expert at mixing genres into one satisfying stew. Here he cooks up a comedic fantasy adventure film the likes of which we had never seen before and have yet to see duplicated since.

A cross between E.T. and Splash, Starman is (along with Dark Star) Carpenter’s most routinely overlooked film. Although not nearly as tongue-in-cheek or openly comic as Big Trouble in Little China or They Live, there’s an inherent charm that can be found in Starman that’s notably missing from Carpenter’s other films. It’s a bold stylistic departure but one that works unbelievably well.

Made in the early ’70s on a shoestring budget, Carpenter’s directorial debut, Dark Star, showed Carpenter’s immense capabilities as a director able to thrive under intense limitations. Making the most out of every last cent in his dramatically small budget, Carpenter created a three-dimensional world that was bizarre, comic, and somehow tangibly real. Moreover, it demonstrated all his clear talents to make the most out of what he had — something that would prove abundantly clear with his later work on Assault on Precinct 13 and Halloween.

In the mid-’80s, John Carpenter and Stephen King were two of the most recognizable names in horror, the idea of the two working together almost too good to be true. Though Christine pales compared to King’s collaboration with George Romero on Creepshow, Carpenter still makes a compelling film from King’s difficult-to-adapt source material. In any other director’s hands, the movie might’ve bombed; but with Carpenter overseeing the material, it became one of its era’s better King adaptations.

Obvious similarities to Stephen King’s later, far superior The Mist aside, The Fog is built around a simple but ingenious idea (what if something lurks in the fog that sweeps over your neighborhood?). While the execution is a little messy in some places, the suspenseful sequences Carpenter builds are superb, forcing you to sit at the end of your seat whenever Carpenter shows the titular fog rolling in.

When looking at the whole of his career, Carpenter peaked by the late 1980s with the release of They Live, the last great entry in his filmography. While none of his movies post-They Live measured up to the heights of his earliest successes, In the Mouth of Madness came fairly close. With its Lovecraftian themes and more dire tone, it was an ideal way to conclude Carpenter’s unofficial “Apocalypse Trilogy” (including The Thing and Prince of Darkness).

12. Prince of Darkness

Prince of Darkness’s biggest faults lay in its harebrained central premise. While the film is far from the atrocious failures of Carpenter’s later films, it was a clear drop in quality from the bone-chilling horror of The Thing, the initial entry in Carpenter’s thematically-connected “Apocalypse Trilogy” to which this belongs.

Like many of Carpenter’s lesser works, Vampires has secured a strong cult following of fans. However, that doesn’t necessarily define it as Carpenter’s definitive film. As with most of his ’90s movies onward, the movie failed to yield much of an interesting narrative, nor did it have genuinely likable characters for viewers to connect with or even root for.

More a remake than a sequel, Escape from L.A. was a risky creative decision on Carpenter’s part that left viewers scratching their heads. Some see the movie as improving Escape from New York (Carpenter’s main incentive behind the project). Still, a thinly-veiled remake was bound to elicit a mixed response from even the most dedicated Carpenter fans.

On the surface, a collaboration between John Carpenter, Chevy Chase, Sam Neill, and Darryl Hannah would be a dream come true. But, sadly, the movie flops back and forth between genres too often, not being funny enough to be a comedy and yet not serious enough to be a drama in the same mold as Starman.

With how loved the original Village of the Damned was, tackling such a popular film was bound to be challenging. Perhaps something was lost in the translation process — the original movie was so clearly embedded in British culture — but Carpenter’s finished result was another career blunder.

The movie that nearly ended Carpenter’s career, Ghosts of Mars wasn’t Carpenter’s final film, but it might as well have been. Relying on horrendous dialogue and some painfully campy performances, it’s no surprise that it would be nine long years before Carpenter made another film. Truthfully, he would’ve been better off stopping here.

Why We Love Anti-Heroes | Wealth of Geeks

I am going to ask you a question that will make you feel like you’re in tenth-grade English class again. Who is the real villain in Shakespeare’s Macbeth? Any guesses? Anyone? Beuller? Beuller?

One could make a convincing argument that the villain of Macbeth is Macbeth. After hearing a prophecy that he is to become king, he commits a series of murders to secure his fate. You could also argue that the villains in Macbeth are the three witches whose prophecy set the events in place that led to the murder of King Duncan.

If you had asked me when I first read Macbeth, I would have said that the real villain of Macbeth is the high school English teacher that made us read this instead of letting us watch Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Without a doubt, the general consensus of Shakespeare’s stans is that the big bad wolf of the Macbeth Cinematic Universe is none other than Lady Macbeth. Throughout the play, Lady Macbeth convinces her husband to go down the path of murder. Eventually (spoiler alert), things get out of hand, and Macbeth starts murdering people without her knowledge, including the wife and children of their associate, Macduff. After a sleepwalking stint that would put even Mike Birbiglia to shame, she has a self-inflicted “accident” off camera, but the damage she’s inflicted on those around her has already been done and ultimately leads to the demise of her husband at the end of the play.

Wow, that was a pretty good summary! Eat your heart out, Sparknotes.

While Lady Macbeth is arguably the evilest mind in the play, she also has some human qualities. The guilt she felt when she learned of the death of Macduff’s wife and child was so deep that she hallucinated an image of blood on her hands. Most supervillains don’t feel guilt — Thanos could have cleared double those numbers before breakfast and slept like a baby that night. Perhaps Lady Macbeth isn’t a villain; maybe she’s something more complex.

Lady Macbeth is considered one of the first examples of an Anti-hero or a protagonist that lacks the traditional qualities we expect from a conventional hero or heroine. She’s among the first of her kind, but certainly not the last, as the number of anti-heroes in media has only increased in the centuries following. And now we’re done talking about Shakespeare (I swear!) because the anti-hero trope has developed and expanded to include some of the most famous characters of all time (and one killer song by Taylor Swift.)

Heroes vs. Anti-Heroes vs. Villains

We all know what a hero looks like. A hero is courageous, kindhearted, and selfless. Always puts the needs of others before their own needs. A hero always makes the right decisions just in the nick of time. A hero has a cape that billows heroically in the breeze and has never had a bad hair day — not even once. Clark Kent, Harry Potter, and Captain America are all heroes.

We all know what a villain looks like. A villain is the guy hiding in the shadows, mashing his together, muttering “mwahaha.” He kicks puppies for fun and takes candies from babies just because it’s Thursday. Lex Luthor, Lord Voldemort, and Thanos are all villains – and they relish the title.

So what does an anti-hero look like? Is it just a mix of both?

They have a saying about greatness as it applies to heroes: “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” This is a quote from a play called Twelfth Night written by…never mind. Anyway, I believe a correlation can be made here with some slight adjustments for anti-heroes. Some are born evil and turn good. Some are born good and slowly turn bad. And others are hurricanes of chaos with short stints of humanity.

Do I have examples of each of these categories? Of course, I do! Thanks for asking. And since you stuck with me through not one but two Shakespeare references, I’m going to reward you with a fun one. My personal favorite anti-hero: Deadpool.

What Does an Anti-Hero Look Like?

Deadpool, also known as “Merc with a Mouth” Wade Wilson, has been gracing the Marvel Comics world since his debut in the early nineties. He’s a former mercenary with super strength and regenerative abilities (meaning he essentially can’t die), and he’s also worked alongside one of the greatest comic book teams in history: the X-Men. This alone would qualify one as a superhero, but as Wade says in his 2016 movie starring Ryan Reynolds: “I may be super, but I’m no hero.”

He’s immature, violent, and only cares about one person: his partner, Vanessa. But he cares deeply and authentically about her. Human traits like that make Wade no villain. Wade leaps into action to save her when she’s in danger, leaving his violent and immature ways behind him (mostly). Deadpool is the poster child for a bad guy who became good because of love. But he’s not a hero, either. Alexa, play “Lover.”

Or They Can Look Like

Now let’s talk about someone that started out good and turned bad. There’s no better example of a downward spiral from “Mr. Rogers” to “Scarface” than one Walter White of a little show called Breaking Bad. A sweet, kindhearted father and high school chemistry teacher is diagnosed with inoperable cancer. Refusing to put his wife and children through financial hardship due to his terminal illness, he begins selling meth alongside his former student Jesse Pinkman.

Of course, the story is filled with twists and turns leading to Walter becoming a drug kingpin, and what’s worse… he’s good at it. Sure, a lot of people die because of Walter’s actions, both directly and indirectly. Ultimately his family gets torn apart, and…well, I don’t want to spoil it for you, but things don’t turn out well for him.

But Walter wasn’t born a villain. He started his journey towards crime due to circumstances he couldn’t control. It makes the viewer ask themselves how they would handle the situation if their health and family were on the line. Personally, I would start with a lemonade stand or a go-fund-me and would only resort to dealing meth as a last resort.

Or How About

Another example of a great antihero in modern media is Pedro Pascal’s turn as the titular character in The Mandalorian. Also known as Din Djarin, the character was inspired by another of history’s great anti-heroes: Clint Eastwood’s “The Man With No Name,” who appears in some of his earlier Spaghetti westerns such as A Fistful of Dollars. Much like this outlaw, the Mandalorian conceals a significant part of his identity — in this case, his face — which creates a mysterious and stoic air surrounding him. While being “mysterious” isn’t a stereotypically heroic trait, we still find ourselves rooting for both heroes at the end of the day.

The rise of the anti-hero has led to some of the most impactful characters in the history of television, movies, games, and comics. These pivotal characters include The Grinch, GOT’s Jaime Lannister, The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon, and Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent (especially in her solo movie.) So, why do we love these characters so much?

Why Do We Love Those Characters So Much?

I was getting to that!

In short, we love antiheroes because they reflect the duality of man – how both good and bad traits combine to create a relatable, more human character. As much as we love Superman, it’s unfair to expect everyone to be Clark Kent, a beacon for truth, justice, and the American way.

Not everyone can be Captain America, fighting alongside the troops without getting a scratch. Not everyone can be Harry Potter, conquering the darkness through the power of friendship. But there is one thing everyone can be: flawed. This is what connects us to anti-heroes and to the rest of the world: being accepting of flaws, laughing at them, and seeing heroic traits anyway. While seeing and relating to the flaws of fictional characters is a great way to pass the time, in a perfect world, we would also extend that same grace to ourselves — and each other.

12 Jaw-Dropping Moments in 1923 | Wealth of Geeks

1923, Taylor Sheridan’s second prequel series telling the story of the Dutton family’s origins, wrapped up its first season on February 26 with a doozy of a cliffhanger in true Sheridan fashion. The season was full of suspense, cliffhanger endings, and moments to shock and delight superfans of the Yellowstone franchise.

Yellowstone, available on the Paramount Network, recently finished its fifth season. Fans are eagerly awaiting the announcement of Season Six dates. The series follows the modern-day Dutton family navigating life on their Montana Ranch. 1883 provided backstory on the first generation of the Dutton family in Montana, and 1923 continues the family’s story. 1923 and 1883 are available to stream on Paramount+.

Spoiler alerts follow, so if you haven’t finished the season, bookmark this and come back later.

The biggest disappointment in Season 1 was that Spencer Dutton never does make it back to his family’s Montana ranch. The overarching plot line of the series is that Spencer needs to come home to save the family ranch and legacy, and just when we think he’s making progress, something happens.

Even though we never quite grasp that carrot Sheridan dangles in front of us, the series did have its edge-of-the-chair moments. While we’re waiting for more information on 1923’s second season (because we all want to know if Spencer makes it home to Montana), let’s take a look back at some of the most jaw-dropping moments of Season 1.

1. Eaten by a Leopard (Episode 1)

The series premiere introduces us to a new character, Spencer Dutton, played by Brandon Sklenar. This Dutton is about as far away from the family’s Montana ranch as it’s possible to get. He’s in Africa, hunting lions and leopards and running from his World War I demons.

Spencer catches the attention of a British woman on a luxury safari holiday (because he’s easy on the eyes), but unfortunately, her interest is her downfall. We see her slip from her tent in her nightgown and assume she will seek out Spencer, but something else seeks her out first.

The leopard Spencer has been hunting flies out of the grass and locks its fangs on her neck. Spencer, who has been waiting for the leopard, hears the commotion, but it’s too late. The big cat is already dragging her body up into a tree.

Spencer shoots the leopard, we see the shadow of another leopard on the tent, and his companions yell, “Spencer, there’s two of them!” and that adrenaline-charged moment is the end of Episode 1.

The woman is obviously dead, which is unfortunate in many ways. Being mauled by a leopard is surely a terrible way to go, which is compounded by the fact that we can tell Spencer wasn’t into her in the first place.

2. Teonna Rainwater Puts the Smackdown on Sister Mary (Episode 1)

Native American girls in boarding school with nuns

While it’s a rare viewer that wouldn’t agree that the ruthless nun didn’t deserve what she got, this is the first of many violent scenes between these two, played by Aminah Nieves and Jennifer Ehle, but it jumps right in and addresses the often brutal treatment of Native Americans by Catholic priests and nuns and society in general.

Teonna Rainwater is a teenager girl being held in a Catholic boarding school against her will. The first few episodes of 1923 tell the story of her abuse and of how her family is trying to rescue her. The way Native Americans are treated by white society and white landowners is a central and important theme of 1923.

3. Alexandra Runs After Spencer (Episode 2)

Lady that got killed by leopard

Even though Alexandra, played by Julia Schlaepfer (whom we’ll later learn is the Countess of Sussex), has had but two brief encounters with the brooding lion hunter Spencer Dutton, there’s some serious smolder going on between these two, which gives us clues that the posh but down to earth Alexandra will be an essential part of the 1923 storyline.

By the way, if Alexandra and Spencer aren’t giving you some major Jack and Rose Titanic vibes, just wait for it.

As Spencer heads off on his next adventure, he tips his hat to Alexandra, who is standing with a group of her fancy friends, and starts driving away. We see Alexandra’s internal struggle, and then she quickly has an “Oh, what the heck” moment, collects her bag, and sprints after Spencer’s car. Her parting shot to her stupefied fiancée is to encourage him to find someone who loves him, and then she rides into the sunset with her true love.

4. The Near-Miss Hanging of Banner Creighton (Episode 2)

Jilted Arthur boarding the ship

Banner Creighton, played by Jerome Flynn, is one of the show’s antagonists. Creighton is a sheep farmer at odds with the current Dutton patriarch, Jacob Dutton, played by Harrison Ford. Creighton’s sheep are grazing on Dutton’s grasslands, and there’s not enough grass to go around. Dutton asserts that his family was the first to claim the land and that Creighton’s lack of pastures for his sheep isn’t a good reason for sneaking onto Dutton’s property.

When one of Creighton’s trespassing sheep herders shoots at Jack Dutton (Jacob’s nephew), played by Darren Mann, Jacob and his men confiscate the sheep and gift them to the local reservation. But the Duttons aren’t content to leave it there. They place nooses around the necks of Creighton and some of his men, sit them atop their horses, and ride away, leaving them for dead.

The next scene shows Creighton still alive, seated atop his horse, and still with the noose around his neck. His compadres didn’t fare as well. Their horses are absent, and their bodies swing lifelessly from their nooses.

Fortunately for Creighton, he has a loyal horse, manages to cut himself down, and lives to see another day. Even though we’re programmed to see any character played by Harrison Ford as a good guy, we realize this one is kind of complicated, and we find ourselves rooting for Creighton, even if just for a minute.

5. Spencer and Alexandra Spend the Night in a Tree (episode 3)

Jacob Dutton played by Harrison Ford defends his family against the ambush

Spencer and Alexandra are on an African adventure and unexpectedly startle a bull elephant, which makes mincemeat of their jeep. The night is falling, and the couple seeks shelter in a tree where they watch a pride of lions feasting on the unfortunate elephant who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Unfortunately for our lovebirds, the lions get a whiff of the humans up in the tree and begin to circle. Despite being told to be quiet (which I don’t entirely get because the lions’ sense of smell would overrule the quiet game), Alexandra screams, and it borders on annoying. It was the first time I experienced a dislike for Alexandra, but fortunately, that was short-lived.

Just as it looks like Spencer and Alexandra are lion chow, help arrives, and the couple is rescued.

6. The Ambush and Banner Creighton’s Revenge (Episode 3)

Jack Dutton played by Darren Man

Meanwhile, back in Montana, the Dutton family is traveling home from a trip to the bustling metropolis of Bozeman. Everyone’s happy, relaxed, and not expecting to be ambushed by Banner Creighton and his band of merry men because everyone assumed Creighton was swinging from a tree.

Creighton’s gang opens fires on the Dutton party, wounding Jacob, Jack, and Jack’s finance Elizabeth, played by Michelle Randolph. Jack’s father, John, played by James Badge Dale, whom the internet assumes is the grandfather of Kevin Costner’s character in Yellowstone, is shot in the eye and dies.

This is the fan reminder that Taylor Sheridan has no qualms about killing off the good guys, and the episode ends without us knowing whether or not Jake and the fiancée will make it.

7. Teonna Beats Sister Mary with a Bag of Bibles (Episode 4)

Father Renaud

Teonna Rainwater continues to endure abuse from sadistic Sister Mary throughout the first few episodes. By the time Episode 4 rolls around, she’s had enough and decides to run away from the school.

Good call, Teonna. She goes out with a bang, filling a pillowcase with Bibles and beating Sister Mary with them before suffocating her. Whether we want to call that poetic justice or irony, we’re not shedding any tears over the nun’s passing.

8. Emma Dutton’s Suicide (Episode 4)

Emma Dutton

John Dutton’s wife, played by Marley Shelton, is still reeling from losing her husband in the ambush. Episode three shows her digging a grave in the family plot, and early in Episode four, we see why.

Emma takes her own life by shooting herself, and while we only see the outside of the house and hear the gunshot, it’s a powerful moment and drives home the point of how hard life has gotten for the Dutton family in Montana.

9. The (Predictable) Sinking of the Tugboat (Episode 5)

Donald Whitfield played by Timothy Dalton

When Alex and Spencer board a rickety-looking tugboat in Mombasa piloted by a captain who appears to have consumption, emphysema, or maybe both, we see the writing on the wall. The previews leading up to Episode 5 show Alex being tossed around on a boat at sea, so we’re primed for some shipwreck-y mishap, but that doesn’t make it any less of a moment when it happens.

The end of the episode is a cliffhanger where Aunt Cara, played by Helen Mirren, back home on the ranch, reads Spencer’s telegram announcing his homecoming with tears of relief. The camera pans to a shot of the overturned tugboat with no survivors in sight. Even though the rickety tugboat and the rickety captain didn’t survive the voyage was unsurprising that the end-of-episode visual manages to be a gut-puncher.

10. Comeuppance for the Evil Priests (Episode 7)

Banner Creighton played by Jerome Flynn

Although the scenes of the Catholic clergy abusing the young Native Americans are hard to watch, seeing them get what they deserve is satisfying. When Teonna runs away from school after punching the cruel Sister Mary with a pillowcase full of Bibles, the priest in charge of the school, Father Renaud, played by Sebastian Roché, sends three of his priests after her on horseback. Mind you, they don’t appear to be carrying the necessary supplies for an open-ended excursion out into the badlands, but I guess we’re not supposed to notice that.

The priests eventually catch up to Teonna, who is now disguised as a boy, and traveling with her father, Runs His Horse, played by Michael Greyeyes, and a young Native American boy, Pete, played by Cole Brings Plenty.

Fun fact: Brings Plenty is the nephew of Yellowstone actor and 1923 consultant Mo Brings Plenty, who plays Thomas Rainwater’s right-hand man, Mo, in Yellowstone.

The priests initially capture Pete to take him to their school, but Teonna and her father fight back, eventually killing all the priests. Runs His Horse shows he means business by scalping one of them and announcing that he’s “eaten the man’s soul.” We don’t see what he did, but his blood-smeared mouth gives us a clue that he took a literal bite out of the guy.

Before heading toward Wyoming, Runs His Horse writes “Child Killer” on the priest’s bare chests in blood so whoever happens upon the bodies knows exactly what’s up at that Catholic school in Bozeman. That is if the wolves and cougars don’t get to them first.

11. Prohibition-Era BSDM (Episode 7)

Alexandra and Spencer run away together

While I didn’t find this moment jaw-dropping, the internet clutches its collective pearls over two scenes where villanous Donald Whitfield, played by Timothy Dalton, whips two prostitutes and forces them to whip each other. Both drawn-out scenes involve nudity and abuse of power.  Whitfield is Jacob Dutton’s archnemisis and joins forces with Banner Creighton with the goal of taking over the Dutton’s land to mine it. It was hard for me to see the former James Bond as such a bad guy but Whitfield has zero redeeming characteristics.

Even though the Yellowstone franchise has showcased powerful female characters, like Cara, Margaret, and Beth Dutton, the scenes showing the prostitutes being whipped were a sobering reminder that women’s options were limited in the 1920s and that these women were victims. The extended nudity had some shock value, but it’s definitely got the internet having conversations about the show, which is likely what Sheridan intended all along.

12. Spencer Yeets Arthur (Episode 8)

Spencer and Alexandra as they prepare to board the tugboat in Mombasa

Newlyweds Spencer and Alex (we’ve been calling her Alex since the tree incident) finally start heading back to civilization. Still, they have the misfortune of traveling on the same ocean liner as the Earl of Sussex (AKA Alex’s former fiancée, Arthur, whom she jilted in Episode 2.) Apparently he’s still too brokenhearted to go find someone who really loves him, so things are awkward.

Alex initially decides they’ll hole up in their stateroom to avoid Arthur, played by Rafe Soule, and his posse, but then changes her tune and decides to flaunt her happiness (and her hunky new husband) in the fancy people’s dining area.

We can understand Arthur’s jealousy and bitterness, but he’s a snot that doesn’t know when to quit, which turns out to be his downfall. He challenges Spencer to a duel with swords up on deck and ends up pushing Arthur overboard to defend himself (after Arthur loses the duel, he picks up a revolver and charges at Spencer, which turns out to be a fatal mistake.) A dumb way to die, but no one was all that sorry to see this guy go.

And yes, I know some consider “yeet” an annoying slang term, but after watching Arthur whiz through the air into the ocean blue, I decided “yeet” was the best word to describe it.

What Will Season 2 Bring?

Jack Dutton played by Darren Man

Although we know there will be a second season of 1923, we don’t yet have a timetable for when that will be released.

The biggest fan speculation involves wondering whether Spencer will make it back to Montana to save the ranch, which is silly because the ranch is still in the family in the present-day Yellowstone series, and the current patriarch, John Dutton III, played by Kevin Costner, has made several references to the ranch always being in his family.

Whether Spencer makes it back or not, we know the Duttons don’t lose their land, at least not permanently. But we’re all rooting for Spencer and Alex, who were separated at the end of the season finale.

There’s also a plethora of internet speculation on the Dutton family tree and which yet-to-be-born baby will turn out to be John Dutton, Jr., played by Dabney Coleman in a brief cameo in Yellowstone’s Season Two finale.

Only the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan knows, and he’s not telling. The rest of us will just have to wait…and guess!

Going Through a Relationship Breakup? : 7 Positive Things To Do | Wealth of Geeks

Relationship breakups are one of those life events that almost everyone goes through at least once. The causes for this circumstance are subjective and unique to each person, and simply having a heart increases the likelihood of heartbreak.

So, what to do after a breakup? Suppose you’re facing a situation like this. In that case, you may want to have activity ideas to help you navigate the wave of emotional struggle like most humans do to thrive in discomfort.

Breakups are difficult to deal with, whether it’s a friendship, a family, or a love relationship. This blog post will explore seven positive things to do after a breakup to feel better and help you move forward.

What To Do After a Relationship Breakup?

Breakups can be tricky, and taking care of yourself during this time is essential. While it’s natural to feel sad or angry after a relationship breakup, it’s also an opportunity to focus on yourself and your well-being.

Acknowledging these thoughts is the first thing you want to do after breaking up. The goal will never be to avoid what you genuinely feel because, as the saying goes, rain must fall before the sun may shine.

Our emotional lives try to find a balance in a world of polarities, that’s why “although breakups are stressful events, they have the potential to produce positive outcomes,” according to author Lewandowski in “Promoting positive emotions following relationship dissolution through writing” for The Journal of Positive Psychology, “research has established that positive emotions can occur following a breakup, particularly when the previous relationship did not expand the self, and when personal growth occurred after the breakup.”

1. Focus On Self-care

After a breakup, focusing on yourself and prioritizing self-care is important. The science behind doing activities out of fun is that it will remind you how significant it is to build a personal space of confidence, love, and comfort, which will help you to feel better about yourself by having some “me” time.

A list of self-care activities may include:

  • Dine in a nice restaurant.
  • Get new clothes.
  • Thrift books and films.
  • Have a night out by yourself.
  • Go on a road trip near your home.

You may also like: Crush Your Dating Anxiety with These 6 Mind-Blowing Techniques

  • Walk under the morning sun.
  • Do a particular skincare night routine.
  • Dance to music you never hear.
  • Take a relaxing bath.
  • Embrace your feelings (or, to say it in a better way: cry a little).

Setting goals for yourself is a healthy way to move forward after a breakup. It can be helpful to focus on something positive and productive, like a new fitness goal, a career goal, or a little personal project (as little as practicing a new morning routine). By setting goals and working towards them, you feel more in control of your life and more optimistic about the uncertain future.

2. Try To Avoid Their Social Media Profiles for a While

This online relationship platform user believes that “the movies make us think that there’s something our exes can tell us that will free us from our mind-prison.” While it could be like this in some relationships, breakups are not recipes that follow the same steps for everyone.

This belief is like a coping mechanism for a search for answers or peace. That’s why a no-contact rule can help you to move on, even if the split was a mutual agreement between the parties involved.

The power of silence after a breakup does not imply avoiding your ex; instead, it focuses on reconnecting with oneself to reflect on what happened and move ahead. With this awareness, you may add new colors to your relationship painting and find previously unnoticed angles of the situation.

3. Reconnect With a Hobby

Do you remember when you were a kid? Playful games kept you busy (not avoidant!) while you learned something new, thanks to your imagination. When you create something with your hands, whether it’s a recipe, a painting, a sport, or a meditation activity, you’re reconnecting with a part of yourself that your younger self has cherished forever.

Engaging in hobbies will also help you to discover new passions, learn new skills, and connect with others. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s essential to take the time to prioritize your pastimes and make time for the things that bring us joy after feeling down.

“Leisure activities (e.g., vacations, siestas, coffee breaks) may serve as “breathers” that provide a chance to take a break, engage in a pleasurable diversionary activity, and consequently induce positive emotions and reduce stress,” researchers suggest, “enjoyable activities may also act as “restorers” that facilitate the individual’s recovery from stress by replenishing damaged or depleted resources.”

4. Keep Contact With Your Loved Ones

When going through a breakup, isolating yourself and withdrawing from others can be easy. Don’t be afraid to reach out to loved ones for comfort and support. The power of a kind word or a simple gesture can go a long way in maintaining your relationships alive.

Sometimes just having someone to talk to can make all the difference during a rupture. It could be a weekly phone call, a monthly video chat, a small gesture like sending a thoughtful message, or even just liking a post on social media. It will be enough to strengthen your bonds and make you feel supported by your loved ones.

Your heart is crushed today, but being in touch with those who love you reminds you that you’re not alone in this challenging time; even though a breakup is your suffering, you don’t have to walk through this emotional journey alone. Strong relationships with family and friends contribute to a sense of intimacy and fulfillment because showing your care for others in your life will result in the same kindness being returned to you.

5. Give Yourself The Chance To Meet New People

How to reconnect after a relationship break? The best trick to meeting new people is joining a club or organization that interests you. Whether it’s a sports team, book club, or volunteer group, you’ll be able to connect with people who share your passions and hobbies. This shared interest is a great conversation starter, don’t be hesitant to express your ideas and desires – it’s an excellent opportunity to bond with someone through a mutual mindset.

If you’re feeling like stepping out of your comfort zone, you can even try to attend events or activities that you wouldn’t usually go to most of the time or dare to start conversations with people you encounter daily.

Remember that everyone is in the same boat – most people are happy to meet up and make connections. Remember to be patient and creative – you never know who you might meet and what kind of unique opportunities and friendships could come from meeting new people!

6. Journal

“Early theoretical work suggested that expressive writing produced physiological release, thus reducing health risks and physiological strain associated with prolonged inhibition of the desire to disclose.” as referenced in Mending Broken Hearts: Effects of Expressive Writing on Mood, Cognitive Processing, Social Adjustment, and Health Following a Relationship Breakup, “Writing also might facilitate organizing the event into a coherent narrative or story, which allows new perspectives, problem definitions, or coping strategies to emerge,” researchers discuss.

Journaling is a helpful tool that can positively impact your mental health and well-being; all you need is a notebook, a pen, and a few minutes each day to write down your thoughts and feelings regarding your breakup. As you train your brain to be more aware of what you’re experiencing, you’ll be able to detect patterns in your thinking and behavior that may be holding you back. If possible, you can reinterpret the split in a more beneficial way.

7. Ask for Professional Help

It could be because of the fast-paced environment generated by social media, but emotions, including painful ones, have a suggested deadline in today’s culture. It’s common to believe that if you don’t “notice” significant progress after a few months of attempting to move on, then something must be wrong with you.

This is far away from reality.

Don’t try to suppress your feelings or rush the healing process. Everyone has their timeline for recovering, so be patient with yourself. We forget that grief follows its path and things unfold how they’re meant to be; if you think that seeking professional support may be helpful to your process, it is time to meet with a qualified psychotherapist (especially if you want to learn how to move on after a breakup when you’re still in love.)

Breakups are not easy for many people, but with time and new coping strategies that remind you to be kind to yourself and take things one day at a time, you can get through it. It hurts today, but it will get better tomorrow (and you will begin again.)

Now, after reading all of these positive tips, what do you think are the things to not do after a breakup? Have you regretted one of those things?

How To Manifest Someone: 4 Steps To Attract Love & Abundance Into Your Life | Wealth of Geeks

The concept of manifestation is not always taken seriously. Many people are either confused or suspicious about its efficacy. However, if you know how to practice visualization techniques well and are committed to acting toward fulfilling your desires, manifestation can feel much more tangible than you might expect.

Once you truly embrace the fact that your mind and your capable hands have the power to manifest the dream life you want, an endless door of opportunities will be opened to you.

So, if you have been looking for someone to fill a special role in your life and bring about love and abundance, practicing manifestation can be a smart move to start working towards transforming that wish into reality.

Don’t worry if you haven’t yet learned how to go about it. We will share some insights on how to manifest someone and helpful tools you can use to do it. Let’s start by understanding what it means to manifest someone.

What Is Manifestation?

In simple terms, manifesting means transforming your intangible desires into a reality using your intentional positive energy. This means that you should be able to manifest anything you want, whether it is a dream job, car, money, or even a soulmate, by focusing your thoughts, feelings, and energy on the object of your desires.

Manifestation is based on the law of attraction, which states that we draw into our lives whatever we concentrate on and give energy to, whether it be something good or bad.

It is predicated on the notion that everything in the cosmos, including our thoughts and emotions, is composed of energy vibrations. Hence, we can attract positive events by concentrating our thoughts and feelings on them. This is accomplished by combining visualization techniques and acting toward our desired goals.

In essence, the so-called “Law of Attraction “uses the power of our ideas and beliefs to help us manifest the life we want by connecting to the higher vibrational frequency of the universe.

To dive even deeper into this law and learn how to manifest in all areas of your life, check out this complete manifestation guide.

Busting 3 Myths About Manifestation

People tend to have a lot of unfavorable perceptions and presumptions about the manifestation process. To help convince the skeptics, we look at three of the most common myths about manifestation and explain why this practice is worth your efforts after all.

1. Manifestation Is Not Magic

The idea that manifestation is a magical or mystical technique with no foundation in reality or science is one of the most pervasive misconceptions out there. This is untrue, though, as manifestation is founded on quantum physics principles, which show that our ideas and beliefs significantly impact the physical world around us.

Quantum physics recognizes that everything in the universe is interrelated and that our thoughts and beliefs may affect our environment. The smallest constituents of matter (such as atoms and subatomic particles) are not simply random, independent entities but are related and subject to the observer’s experience. In other words, the behavior and characteristics of these particles might change due to observation or measurement.

While manifesting, concentrating our thoughts and beliefs on the results we want can impact the energy and vibrations of the universe and draw those results to us. Everything in the cosmos is formed of energy and vibrations, and our ideas and beliefs can either positively or negatively influence these vibrations.

In addition, quantum physics has demonstrated that space and time are malleable and subject to the observer’s experience. By altering our perceptions and beliefs, we may alter how time and space feel to us, thereby designing a new reality for ourselves.

2. Manifestation Is Not All About Money and Greed

Some individuals might also link materialism or greed to manifestation, claiming it is all about accumulating wealth and material stuff. Although people can indeed use manifestation to reach their financial objectives and draw wealth into their life, this is just one type of wish that people may have.

In actuality, manifestation may be applied to any area of life, including health, relationships, and personal growth. It can allow individuals to cultivate a feeling of purpose, fulfillment, and abundance in all areas of their lives.

3. Manifestation Is Not an Instant Solution

Finally, some may believe that manifestation is a shortcut or quick fix to success and doesn’t require effort or hard work. In fact, it is quite the opposite – manifestation is a practice that calls for persistent effort, devotion, and a readiness to take inspired action to achieve your objectives.

Even though the universe works in unfathomable ways to assist you in realizing your dreams, you still need to play a part by acting and seizing the opportunities that come your way.

What Does It Mean To Manifest Someone?

In essence, when you say “manifest someone,” it refers to the idea of using the law of attraction to bring a specific person into your life. This could be someone you have a crush on, a dream partner, an ex-partner you want to get back together with, new people and friendships, or simply someone you admire and want to build a relationship with.

People set out to manifest someone for a variety of reasons. For some, it may be a longing for intimacy, love, or connection. They can be looking for true love, a partner who will encourage and support them, share their hobbies and interests, and allow them to develop and learn. Others may seek to reignite an old romance.

Whatever the motivation, manifesting a person necessitates a high degree of self-awareness and clarity around what you want and need in a relationship. It entails being open to the unexpected and trusting in the universe to direct you toward the ideal partner while also concentrating your thoughts, feelings, and actions on attracting someone who matches your desires and ideals.

While the concept of manifestation has become popular in recent years, and we will show you how to use this practice best to achieve your desires, it’s also important to respect the other person’s autonomy and free will. Humans have free will and can change their course of life the way they want. So, if your ex isn’t interested in you anymore, no form of manifesting can help you bring them back.

Similarly, if someone is not meant to be, trying to make them materialize into your life forcefully isn’t something that will benefit either of you. So in the course of this article, try to remember the do’s and don’ts of attracting your crush or ideal partner with a manifestation ritual. It should be an energetic match for both parties.

How To Manifest Someone in 4 Steps

As you will have gathered by now, we are strong advocates of the power of manifestation and the understanding that it is not just a magical solution to all your problems. As with the success of anything, it requires commitment, consistency, and dedication.

Below you will find our list of recommendations on how to manifest someone using the power of your thoughts and actions.

1. Start by Putting You First

While manifesting, it’s crucial to be mentally, emotionally, and physically in your best shape since it enables us to match our energy with our goals. When we care for our bodies by providing them with appropriate rest, exercise, and nutrition, we are in good physical health, which gives us additional vigor and energy to concentrate on our objectives.

Likewise, having mental clarity and strength allows us to be free of mental clutter, negative thoughts, and negative self-talk that might prevent us from fulfilling our goals. This enables us to have a constructive mindset that aligns with our objectives.

When we are emotionally clear, we are free from common limiting beliefs like fear, doubt, and low self-esteem that might prevent us from achieving our goals. As a result, it is simpler for us to feel worthy of love and attract what we want because we can be in an emotional state that is in harmony with our desires.

You may have heard the popular phrase, “feeling is healing.” It is commonly used in cognitive behavioral therapy. The philosophy is based on the changes in feelings and inner talk to bring about behavior change.

For example, positive affirmations have long been used to rewire the subconscious mind to balance the body’s energetic centers, eliminate negative beliefs, improve self-esteem, establish a positive mindset, and encourage self-love.

With your emotional and mental state in check, taking actions aligned with your manifestations is easier. Clarity on something or about someone you want in your life activates your RAS (aka “Reticular Activating System”). It filters the irrelevant information and helps you focus on the important things.

For example, by removing old clutter from your physical or digital environment by deleting photos and documents you no longer need and removing items that remind you of negative experiences, you can make space for fresh energy to fill and flow through you.

2. Be Clear on What You Want

Next on our list of vital tools and techniques to master so that you can manifest the person of your dreams is visualization. Visualization is a technique often associated with manifestation. It involves using your imagination to create a clear picture of what you want to attract into your life.

When we envision, we effectively make a mental image of the desired result and imagine that we’ve already had it. It is simpler to believe that we can truly manifest love when we can visualize ourselves already having done so. It enables us to access positive emotions, such as happiness, joy, and contentment, which put out good vibes and energy into the universe, drawing more good high vibrations and energy our way.

Some useful visualization exercises you can try include:

  • Build a vision board: A vision board depitcts your desired objective. You can make a real or digital vision board by gathering pictures, sayings, and other materials that represent the kind of relationship you want to manifest. It will keep your attention on your objective and remind you of the good feelings and emotions you wish to have in your new connection.
  • Write a love letter to your future lover: In this activity, you will write a letter to your future partner in which you will express your thanks and love for them as if you have already met them. This radiates good vibes and energy into the cosmos while assisting you in accessing the sentiments and emotions connected to being in a loving relationship.
  • Visualize your ideal relationship: Close your eyes for a short time each day, take a deep breath, focus on opening your third eye chakra, and picture yourself in the relationship of your dreams. Imagine being happy, loved, and supported by your mate. When visualizing someone, think in the present tense and try to incorporate as many senses as possible, like the scent of their cologne or perfume, the feel of their hand, or the sound of their voice. By connecting with the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of being in a loving relationship, this practice enables you to direct your attention and energy toward making that reality a reality in your life.
  • Pro Tip: Instead of visualizing a specific person, it’s better to focus on visualizing the type of relationship you want, such as a loving, supportive, and healthy partnership. You can also focus on visualizing your personal growth and happiness, which can attract positive and healthy relationships into your life.

As always, remember visualization alone is not enough to create the changes you want. You also need to take action toward your goals and be open to opportunities that come your way.

3. Describe The Exact Person You Want To Manifest

You can make different lists to help you manifest someone into your life. This is part of the visualization component of manifesting someone; however, it is also such a crucial step to any manifestation technique that it merits its own spot on this list.

You can clearly communicate your desires and what you seek in a companion to the universe by writing down the traits you want in a person. Such a list can also assist you in maintaining focus on your objective and preventing you from settling for anything less than what you genuinely desire and deserve.

Making a list can be a potent tool for introspection and personal development. It might help you become more conscious of your values and priorities and even show you where you need to improve to attract the right kind of relationship.

List the traits you want to see in your partner, but do more than just focus on the physical features. Write down the internal characteristics of the kind of person you want to manifest. For example:

  • List the feelings you want to experience by connecting with this person in reality
  • Write down what an ideal day with this person in your life would look like; ask yourself what the first date or the first time you meet them looks like
  • Specify what qualities and traits you want to draw in a companion, making it easier for you to spot them in real life
  • List the experiences you want to have together
  • Capture the range of emotions they will evoke in you and the impact that will have on your life

4. Try Journaling or Scripting

Journaling is an excellent way to determine if your current state of mind is one of scarcity or abundance. Manifestation can’t work with a scarcity mindset. Putting your manifestations on paper allows you to rewire your neural pathways while fortifying positive thoughts, feelings, and beliefs.

A manifestation journal can help you better understand what you want from a relationship and what you’re ready to give in exchange by writing down your objectives, goals, and intentions. It also lets you monitor your development and take stock of any roadblocks or difficulties.

Also, journaling can assist you in recognizing and overcoming any limiting beliefs or unfavorable thought patterns that might prevent you from creating the relationship you desire. By putting your worries and uncertainties on paper, you may start to question and reframe them to replace them with more empowering and uplifting ideas that help you realize your desires.

In addition, journaling can be a means to express gratitude for the positive aspects of your life and the progress you’ve made toward manifesting your desired relationship. This can assist you in maintaining a good outlook and a high vibration, both of which are necessary for drawing desirable circumstances into your life.

Manifesting someone into your life is possible, but it has no one-size-fits-all formula. You need to work hard on your growth to tune in to what fits your criteria and take action. You can use the ideas mentioned above as tools for a successful manifestation journey on how to manifest someone.

Every Gamera Movie Ranked | Wealth of Geeks

With the recent announcement of a new Gamera movie, the first animated film in the long-running franchise, coming to Netflix in the unspecified future, I wanted to take a look back at the giant turtle’s storied history. The Gamera franchise offered at least one movie per decade between the 1960s and the 2000s with varying degrees of success.

From his first appearance in 1965 to his most recent outing in 2006, Gamera has starred in twelve films. Some of those twelve are stone-cold classics of the kaiju genre, while others are more forgettable. In honor of the turtle’s return, I’ll look at every movie where the turtle has starred and parse through the worst and the best in the series.

12. Gamera: Super Monster (1980)

Gamera: Super Monster is literally a cash grab. The film is made up significantly of clips from not only the seven previous Gamera films but also footage from two anime series that Gamera is awkwardly spliced into and features little original content. Gamera: Super Monster was made nine years after the last installment in the franchise to help the Daiei studio make some money while they were financially struggling.

Evil Alien Invader

Gamera Super Monster

The story centers on an evil alien invader that releases Gamera’s previous foes after superheroes (who are not present in any other Gamera films) cannot stop them. It’s barely a movie, and even if you’re kind enough to call it one, it’s a very, very bad one.

11. Gamera vs. Viras (1968)

Gamera vs. Viras 1

Not nearly as guilty as Super Monster of reusing footage, but not innocent either. Gamera vs. Viras mainly focuses on a pair of Boy Scouts kidnapped by aliens from the planet Viras. The movie spends more time on the boys’ attempts to escape their captors than on Gamera. And the original footage of Gamera’s fight with the titular Viras (yes, the monster and the planet have the same name) is disappointingly lackluster.

Incredibly Anticlimactic

Gamera vs. Viras

The monster’s design also looks more like something a desperate parent would create the night before Halloween than something that belongs in a kaiju movie, and the fight feels incredibly anticlimactic.

10. Gamera vs. Zigra (1971)

Gamera vs. Zigra 1

The last film made before Super Monster, Gamera vs. Zigra, once again sees the beloved turtle face off against alien invaders. This time they’re aquatic aliens looking to take over Earth’s oceans and use humans for food.

Most Ridiculous Movie

Gamera vs. Zigra

Gamera vs. Zigra isn’t especially good, but it may be the most ridiculous movie in the series as Zigra speaks, and in the final battle, Gamera plays the other monster’s back like a xylophone. There’s a worthwhile but hamfisted message about environmentalism and overfishing in there as well.

9. Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999)

The third and final film in the trilogy of Gamera films released in the 1990s, Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris is sometimes considered one of the best entries not only in the franchise but in the kaiju genre overall. But that praise is based on the film’s significant human storyline that centers on a young girl whose family was killed during one of the turtle’s previous battles.

Interesting Narrative

Gamera 3 Revenge of Iris

It’s an undeniably interesting narrative idea for a kaiju film, but it detracts from time spent with the kaiju leading to a movie that feels more abstractly about kaiju than actually centering on them. It also doesn’t help that while the villainous Iris’s design is fantastic, we mostly see it in CGI rather than practical effects.

8. Gamera the Brave (2006)

Gamera the Brave 1

The only film that (thus far) stands alone in the Gamera franchise without a sequel, Gamera the Brave is a very different movie from the other eleven movies. It’s a much more grounded movie that centers more on the child at its center than on Gamera.

A Sweet Movie

Gamera the Brave

The story follows a young boy after he discovers a mysterious egg that hatches a small turtle he brings home as his pet. But that pet is capable of breathing fire and flying. It’s a sweet movie that includes a kaiju fight, but is much more interested in exploring the relationship between Gamera and children in a way that’s different from Gamera simply saving kids in peril as he’d done for decades before.

7. Gamera vs. Gyaos (1967)

Gamera vs. Gyaos 1

Gamera vs. Gyaos pits the turtle against the oversized bat with laser breath known as Gyaos for the first time. Volcanic eruptions awake Gyaos, and while government scientists scramble to combat the new threat, Gamera befriends a child and takes on Gyaos to protect him. While Gamera vs. Gyaos is the first film to highlight Gamera’s love for kids, it’s also one of the most brutal movies in the series.

Takes an Upswing

Gamera vs. Gyaos

We see Gyaos slice off Gamera’s arm with its laser, Gamera bite the flying kaiju’s toes off, and a very good amount of purple and blue blood. It’s not quite as good as some of the other films in the series, but this is where this list takes an upswing.

6. Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995)

Gamera Guardian of the Universe

The first of the 1990s reboot trilogy, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, once again sees the titular turtle face off against Gyaos, but this time there are three of them. The film introduces a lot of lore, establishing that Gamera was likely created by an ancient civilization and introducing a mystical pendant that allows a girl to communicate telepathically with the giant turtle.

Middle of the List

These aspects are well done, but it’s still the kaiju battles that make the movie a success and the fact that there aren’t that many that keep to the middle of this list.

5. Gamera vs. Barugon (1966)

Gamera vs. Barugon 1

Gamera’s second cinematic outing sees the titular turtle face off against the dinosaur-like Barugon, who is capable of shooting a rainbow ray attack from its back and breathing freezing air.

Surprisingly Engaging

The diametrically opposed fire and ice-breathing powers of the creatures make for a great fight, but what makes Gamera vs. Barugon stand out is its surprisingly engaging human storyline. The human story sets up the eventual Kaiju fight, but it also serves up a thrilling crime movie with some fun twists and turns.

4. Gamera vs. Guiron (1969)

Gamera vs. Guiron

The only movie in the franchise thus far to take place on another planet, Gamera vs. Guiron, transports two boys to the mysterious planet “Terra.” On Terra, the children see “space Gyaos” fight with the newly introduced Guiron, whose face is a long knife.

A Showdown

Gamera vs. Guiron 1

Guiron seems to be a protector, but it’s soon revealed that Guiron and the planet’s inhabitants are less than friendly, leading to a showdown between Gamera and Guiron. Gamera vs. Guiron offers a novel background for the fight between the monsters, and along the way, Guiron puts its face knife to good use on both Gamera and the space Gyaos.

3. Gamera vs. Jiger (1970)

Gamera vs. Jiger

In which Gamera becomes pregnant, sort of. The titular antagonist here is awoken by the removal of a statue on Wester Island and, in one of her battles with Gamera, uses a stinger to lay an egg in his lung. While Gamera vs. Guiron offers viewers the unique background of another planet, Gamera vs. Jiger provides a look inside Gamera.

Large-Scale Final Fight

The children who lead the movie have to travel inside the giant turtle to save him from the baby Jiger growing in his lung. Of course, the film delivers a large-scale final fight, and it’s one of the best and funniest in the series as we see Gamera use telephone poles as earplugs at one point.

2. Gamera, the Giant Monster (1965)

Gamera the Giant Monster 1

The first Gamera movie ever made remains one of the best. Gamera, the Giant Monster is obviously just a cash-in on the previous success of Godzilla, and its sequels, but it’s an incredibly effective one. Unlike Godzilla’s first outing, which spends significant time establishing its allegorical intent, Gamera, the Giant Monster is interested only in delivering over-the-top kaiju action. And it succeeds.

A Strange Bond

Gamera the Giant Monster

The film’s simple premise of a creature awoken by nuclear explosions scouring the Earth for energy lets it focus on delightfully realized kaiju destruction without much concern for narrative. Not to say there isn’t a story here; in fact, we can already see the threads of Gamera’s friendship with all children as he develops a strange bond with a sympathetic child.

1. Gamera 2: Attack of Legion (1996)

Gamera 2 Attack of Legion

The second film in the 1990s trilogy of films, Gamera 2: Attack of Legion, is not only the best Gamera film, but also one of the best kaiju films ever made and a great horror movie in its own right. The film centers on another alien invasion of Earth (or rather Japan) as the creatures known as “Legion” arrive via a meteor and quickly set about terraforming cities that can serve as launching pads for more invasive meteors to other planets.

Frightening Creature Designs

Gamera 2 Attack of Legion 1

Before Gamera’s return, the movie plays like something closer to War of the Worlds than a classic kaiju film. And the genuinely frightening creature designs only make the movie’s horror all the more effective. But when Gamera does arrive and take on the “Mother Legion” creature, the film delivers the best kaiju fight in the entirety of the series, something that’s quite a feat in a franchise of twelve movies.

Adulting 101: 9 Steps of Personal Finances for Grown-Ups | Wealth of Geeks

Turning 18 make legally make you an adult, but that doesn’t mean you’re ready to live your life as one. Adulting 101 is so important, especially when it comes to managing your personal finances as a “grown-up” (no matter how grown up you may already be)!

On Your Own

There’s a long list of basics you need to be financially secure. They’re not new concepts, and they’re not complicated, but it seems so many of us fail to grasp the true importance of these things. These concepts create the safety net you’ll need when jumping from the nest and being in charge of your life.

Adulting 101: 9 Steps of Personal Finances for Grown-Ups

These nine important financial concepts will give you the tools you need to live as a financially sound adult.

1. You Need a Budget

budget estimates your incoming income and outgoing expenses over a specified future period and is usually adjusted regularly. In essence, budgeting is creating a plan to use the money you earn to pay your bills, spend, and save.

Budgets can be made for a person, a group of people, a business, a government, or just about anything else that makes and spends money.

How you manage your budget is a personal decision, but you’ll want to find a way that makes it easy for you to enter transactions and check in often.

Managing your monthly expenses prepares you for life’s unpredictable events and gives you greater control over your finances.

Budgeting doesn’t have to be boring, doesn’t require you to be good at math, and doesn’t mean you can’t buy the things you want. It simply means that you’ll know where your money comes from and, more importantly, where it goes.

2. Checking and Savings Accounts

Bank accounts are an easy way to safely access your money. You don’t need to go to the bank in the 21st century and can do all your business online or with an ATM/debit card when needed.

Getting “free” accounts is relatively simple, too, so you can avoid being riddled with monthly banking fees.

3. Establish Your Emergency Fund

An emergency fund refers to money you stash away for a rainy day (and yes, it should be in a savings account of its own so that you can use that money in times of financial distress). The purpose is to be prepared to handle unanticipated expenses such as an illness, job loss, or major home repairs.

It’s usually quantified as how many months’ worth of your expenses it will cover. Typical advice is to have three to six months’ worth of expenses. Still, it might be wise to have more in times of economic stress, such as during a pandemic or recession.

You’ll want to keep your emergency fund fairly liquid, so you can avoid borrowing and high-interest debt options, such as credit cards or unsecured loans.

4. Save for Retirement

If you’re just starting your career, you’re probably not putting too much thought into retirement. But, although it is decades away, it’s never too early to begin saving and planning.

The number one rule of thumb is to begin saving for retirement as soon as you get your first job! Find out if your employer offers a 401(k) retirement savings plan, and if so, sign up for it and start contributing. If not, you can always save on your own in an IRA.

Time is your best friend when saving for retirement. The money you put away from your paycheck will grow for decades and benefit from the interest earned on interest. That’s called compounding, and those who take advantage of it early typically retire very comfortably.

5. Get Insured

Accidents and disasters will happen. If you aren’t flush with cash to handle them, you could face substantial financial setbacks as a result. Insurance is a way to protect your life, health, ability to earn an income and keep a roof over your head when things go wrong. Simply put, it’s a protection plan for you and your finances.

There are many types of insurance, and it’s unlikely you’ll need them all when you first go out alone. However, if you have loved ones or assets worth protecting, you probably need at least a few types of coverage.

When picking any insurance plan, consider how much value it needs to cover. You also need to know how much premium you can afford per month.

In many kinds of insurance, like auto insurance, choosing a deductible is another factor in picking a plan. A larger deductible will decrease your monthly premiums. But it also means you will have a higher out-of-pocket cost per claim until your deductible is met.

6. Manage Your Credit

A good credit score is used for more than just getting a credit card or a loan. Credit scores demonstrate your history of paying your debts to any entity that loans you money.

Three credit agencies monitor your credit and rate you. They are TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. You can ruin your credit rating if you overextend yourself and cannot pay your debts.

In addition, general cost of living expenses take a toll on people’s paychecks, and businesses have good reason to insist that you have good credit before providing products or services to you on credit. Even employers run credit checks to see whether you can be trusted with company finances or other assets. If you have a history of being financially irresponsible, you may run into problems finding work.

You are entitled by law to a free credit report from each of the major credit bureaus once per year. You can request these reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. There are also several credit monitoring apps and services, some of which are free, that allow you to track your credit throughout the year.

It’s easier to start with responsible action and good credit than it is to fix and improve your credit score after you have had a problem. And if you’ve already found yourself dealing with high-interest debt, it’s best to make a plan to pay it off as soon as possible.

7. Start Investing

In order to build your wealth, you will want to invest your money. Investing allows you to use your money to potentially make more money at high rates of return.

Not everyone invests and that is because they may not have the “extra money” beyond their normal bills and everyday costs of living to be comfortable doing so. But if you have the funds and don’t invest, you’re missing out on opportunities to increase your financial worth.

And while investing is one of the best ways to build wealth over time, it can be risky and it’s always possible your investments will lose money.

8. File Your Tax Returns

When you earn money, whether it’s from an employer or self-employment, you must pay your taxes… it’s the law. If you are self-employed, you need to file quarterly payments, which are only estimates of the amount you could owe.

The idea is to pay “your fair share” and not more. That means trying to calculate what you owe accurately and not looking forward to a big refund due to overpayment at the tax year’s end. Mastering this skill means you get to hold on to more of your money throughout the year instead of loaning it to the government interest-free.

Filing your tax returns can seem daunting, but there are many available and affordable apps and software programs that will guide you through the process and help you to file electronically. And if your taxes are particularly complicated, you can always hire an accountant.

9. Plan Your Estate

Being an adult also means thinking about the future in ways that are not always pleasant. Planning in case of your death or serious injury or illness – or estate planning – is a way to ensure your affairs are in order should something happen to you.

A living will is a formal, legal, written document put in place to ensure your specific desires are known about the types of medical treatments you want in the event you’re unable to communicate them. A living will is also used to spell out end-of-life medical care wishes including preferences about pain management, organ donation, and more.

A power of attorney (POA) is a legal document that grants authority to a named person to act on your behalf should you be unable to act on your own. The power a POA grants can be limited in nature, or it can be sweeping and broad. The named POA may be charged with making medical, financial, business-related, or property decisions on your behalf.

A combined advance directive (or healthcare directive) is essentially a hybrid of a living will and a durable healthcare power of attorney. Together, they make sure your wishes are documented and that you’ve named an advocate to make decisions for you. Whether you have a living will, a POA, or both, you want to be covered.

Finally, if you have assets to go to your loved ones in case of your death (or if you need to appoint a guardian for your minor children), you’ll need a will. A will documents your final wishes.

These legal documents can be drawn up by an attorney, or you can use DIY software/websites to create your own. To ensure they are legal, you will need to follow your state’s laws, such as having witnesses and being notarized.

Final Thoughts

Life is great; unfortunately, not every day is roses and sunshine. Adulting means knowing how to prepare for tough days.

You still have family and friends to advise you, but ultimately you have to make the grown-up decisions. Read, talk, seek help, and use the internet to answer questions.

10 Films That Are Just as Amazing Today as When They Were Released | Wealth of Geeks

Since the dawn of the motion picture, the world has been treated to some fantastic movies. However, even some of the best ones age badly and, with time, lose their appeal to audiences. But some age like fine wines, maintaining their lure or even getting better.

1. Starship Troopers (1997)

Reddit loves Starship Troopers. u/Lonack answered, “Starship Troopers. The satire only gets better with time.” u/Hophop241 responded with a lovely story, saying, “Yes!!! I met Casper Van Dien at a convention about 7 years ago. Extremely nice and down to earth guy. We literally had a conversation about how this movie “holds up”, and it does!!”

When it was released, Starship Troopers was ripped to shreds by critics and fans alike; it barely made a profit at the global box office. The film’s anti-fascist satire was badly received, as audiences weren’t expecting that subject material from a sci-fi action film. But it’s been reevaluated and is now recognized as one of the finest sci-fi movies ever made.

2. The Princess Bride (1987)

The Princess Bride!” answered u/shbm333, which prompted u/Libriomancer to reply, “It’s one of the advantages that the more character-driven movies have, the set pieces can look dated, but the characters are timeless. The fight with the ROUS probably looked dated at the time and will always look dated. The banter between the man in black and the trio, though, will forever feel fresh.”

Never were more valid words spoken (or typed). The Princess Bride is a delight from beginning to end. It’s clever, romantic, and funny, with a cast of talented stars who all perform brilliantly.

3. Clueless (1995)

u/MobileDeparture7379 responded with “Clueless.” u/thesephantomhands agreed, saying, “That movie has no business being as good as it is. I keep finding new lines that crack me up. One of my favorites to bust out of nowhere is “excuse me Ms. Dione…”

When a movie has enough packed into it to keep finding new things to laugh at, it’s doing something right. Amy Heckerling’s coming-of-age teen comedy undoubtedly fits that criterion.

4. Galaxy Quest (1999)

MV5BMzNhMzdlNjgtNmQ2ZS00NmQ5LThmNzQtY2FhMzY0Njc4NWI5XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTIwODk1NTQ@. V1 FMjpg UX1920 e1679448960629

“By Grabthar’s hammer . . . Galaxy Quest!” answered u/Murky_Examination144. u/hygenius replied, “It’s just a perfect movie.” And u/Overall-Ad2585 followed with, “It literally is an all-time fave.”

That’s high praise for a brilliant sci-fi comedy widely considered to have stood the test of time. It’s both a spoof of cinema’s finest space adventures and a movie that captures the best parts of those space operas genuinely.

5. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Silence of the Lambs scaled

u/RosemarySaraBlack answered, “The Silence of the Lambs,” prompting u/Jibber_Fight to reply, “This is actually a great answer. I’ve rewatched it recently and holy s**t does that hold up. The last night vision scene still creeped me out and the acting is still phenomenal.”

u/Jibber_Fight is correct. The suspense and tension in The Silence of the Lambs — notably in the mentioned night vision scene — are fantastic. Anthony Hopkins is superb as Hannibal Lecter. Can you believe he only had 16 minutes of screen time?

6. Back to the Future (1985)

back-to-the-future

u/requiem7892 suggested “Back to the Future.” There was widespread agreement with this answer, with u/m1v5s6c38 replying, “A timeless classic,” and u/KryssCom saying, “It’s basically the perfect movie.”

Is there a more universally loved movie than Back to the Future? We’re hard-pressed to think of one. It’s particularly impressive for Back to the Future to be so popular now, given that there are so many plot holes and that we’ve gone past the year to which Doc Brown and Marty McFly traveled. That viewers can overlook its flaws says a lot.

7. Jurassic Park (1993)

Jurassic Park e1675659670345

Jurassic Park :)” was u/Lethal_Spectrum’s answer, and u/AmusedSiren69 replied, “Shoot her! SHOOT HER!!!! Yes best answer.”  u/Virtual_Moment_ went into more detail, saying, “Jurassic Park shows us that practical effects will always stand the test of time, sure some of the CGI shots are a bit rough to look at these days but man, the Tyrannosaurus breakout, the 2 Raptors in the Kitchen, the sick Triceratops etc. All those scenes look miles better than most of the stuff in the Jurassic world franchise.”

When practical effects are done well, they beat CGI hands down. Jurassic Park has some of the finest practical special effects ever filmed, and it looks as good today as it did in 1993.

8. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Shawshank Redemption Castle Rock Entertainment

u/JohSpell answered, “Shawshank redemption. I’ve seen it 1000 times and I still stop what I’m doing and watch whenever it comes on.” It prompted an interesting reply from u/vlkthe, who said, “I have a theory. If Americans are too productive on the weekends, the government orders some networks to start playing Shawshank. It does something to people that make them stop doing what they are doing and start watching it.”

It was inevitable that The Shawshank Redemption would appear on this list; it’s one of the finest movies ever made, and it’s timeless. Can anyone truly say they don’t watch it when it’s airing on television? We think not.

9. The Mummy (1999)

the mummy rachel weisz

A couple of users suggested this one, with u/Dramatic_Teas saying “The Mummy.” and u/iamkrisjenner saying “The Mummy (1999).” Several Redditors agreed wholeheartedly, with u/Gucci_con_queso replying to u/Dramatic_Teas saying, “I feel like it was the last good adventure movie. The sets felt so grandiose and real. Something about it had that classic Hollywood feel (aside from CGI Mummy). I love that movie so much.”

The Mummy tells a classic story that will never grow old — and it’s aided by the fact that its star, Brendan Fraser, is one of the most likable actors on the planet.

10. Spirited Away (2001)

spirited away

The list wouldn’t be complete without at least one animated movie. Luckily, u/Exact-Tank-6504 answered, “Spirited Away,” prompting u/DraconianFury42 to reply with, “Every time I watch it it’s just as magical as the first. The music always makes me teary eyed though.”

Spirited Away is a Japanese animated movie and a great movie to start with if you’re looking to get into anime. The film’s main selling point is that it looks gorgeous. It’s a classic fairytale that’s enchanting for both children and adults alike – and it won’t lose its appeal any time soon.

Small Towns, Big Fun: The Top Spots for a Family Vacation in America | Wealth of Geeks

The trend of vacationing in small towns has seen a significant rise – instead of heading to typical tourist destinations, families are finding solace in these quaint locations.

Life moves at its own pace and promotes true connection with the locals while families have plenty of time to soak up the culture and immerse themselves in an authentically charming atmosphere.

But where are the small towns Americans would most like to visit in 2023?

FamilyDestinationsGuide.com, which offers kid-friendly vacation ideas, surveyed 3,000 families to find the top 150 across the country they’d love to spend time in this year.

Holualoa, Hawaii

At number one is the tiny village of Holualoa in Hawaii. No surprise there, really, as Hawaii is so utterly beautiful, and this laid back ‘burg, on the western coast of the Big Island, has charm by the bucket load.

It’s located on the slopes of the Hualalai volcano and derives its name from the traditional – if somewhat terrifying – local practice of sledding down the mountain on long, wooden sleds.

If you enjoy a caffeine fix, you’ve come to the right place; Holualoa sits between the towns of Kailua-Kona and Keauhou in the heart of Kona coffee country. Six hundred coffee farms surround it, and every November, they hold the Kona Coffee Festival.

Ely, Nevada

In at number two was Ely, in Nevada, a 4.5-hour drive north from Las Vegas. This remote former mining mountain town, which sits at the base of the Great Basin National Park, was originally founded as a stagecoach station along the Pony Express and Central Overland route.

You can still visit the nearby Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park, where six giant beehive-shaped ovens were used to process silver ore.

Elsewhere, you can take a guided tour of the Lehman Caves, a massive cavern over 500 million years old in the Great Basin National Park, or do scenic hikes such as the Island Forest Trail or Bristlecone Pine Trail.

Anna Maria Island, Florida

Not far behind at number three is beautiful Anna Maria Island on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Seemingly preserved in time, it showcases how ‘Old Florida’ used to be, with its pastel-colored clapboard houses and old-timey storefronts.

“The island offers a lot for families to come and visit year-round, even outside of the traditional beach season. As a Florida native, my family has used Thanksgiving beach trips to Anna Maria Island to unplug and unwind for decades. We were able to take advantage of the unique beach libraries each rental home offered, and most came stocked with beach equipment like chairs, buckets, and the occasional kayak,” comments Doug Amis, owner of Cardinal Retirement Planning, Inc.

“Even with the recent more upscale restaurants entering the scene, there are still great deals and opportunities to grill (or have the Rod and Reel grill for you).”

Old Koloa Town, Hawaii

The survey also uncovered some little-known gems, such as Old Koloa Town in Hawaii at number four. A former sugar plantation village, this spot has since been reborn as a scenic destination full of art galleries, cafés, boutiques, and plenty of outdoor activities.

John Dealbreuin from Financial Freedom Countdown says, “Old Koloa Town is a great vacation destination for families due to its stunning natural beauty, an abundance of activities, and rich cultural heritage.

“Located on the beautiful island of Kauai, Koloa Town offers breathtaking views of the white sand beaches and crystal blue waters. Families can enjoy snorkeling and swimming in the ocean or explore Kauai’s many trails and natural wonders.

“Koloa Town is also home to numerous cultural sites that offer visitors insight into Hawaii’s rich history and colorful culture. The Koloa Heritage Trail comprises fourteen locations with an extensive collection of cultural, historical, and geological artifacts from the area’s past, including Moir gardens, volcanic cones, and an ancient temple – Kihahouna heiau.

“You have access to numerous galleries showing off the artistic works of local creators. Sample the local cuisine at the food trucks or the Kōloa Fish Market. Koloa Town’s many activities and attractions make it the perfect place for families to spend quality time together.”

West Yellowstone, Montana

Rounding out the list at number five is West Yellowstone, Montana. This picturesque town sits just outside of Yellowstone National Park and is home to stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife.

“West Yellowstone is full of activities that will keep your family busy for days. We chose it because we wanted to enter Yellowstone Park close to the Geysers and knew it was a busy spot with plenty of restaurants, shops, and outdoor activities. My kids loved the Grand Prismatic Spring with all the bright colors,” comments Karen Kelly from Seasonal Cravings.

Chincoteague, Virginia

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, grabbed the sixth spot on the list, and Chincoteague, Virginia, came in seventh.

“If you’re looking for a Virginia beach vacation but want to skip the summer beach crowds, head to the Eastern Shore’s Chincoteague instead. Known for its two wild herds of Chincoteague ponies, it is the state’s only resort island and offers a nature-filled, laid-back getaway without traffic jams and high-rises. Spend your days in undeveloped beauty biking, kayaking, hiking, or spotting their iconic horses,” comments travel writer Monica Fish.

Rounding out the final three spots in the top ten were Sitka, Alaska, Sedona, Arizona, and Ketchikan, Alaska.

Top 10 Small Towns in America

Unsurprisingly, two towns from both Hawaii and Alaska made it to the top 10 due to their breathtaking views: Holualoa, Old Koloa Town in Hawaii, and Sitka, Ketchikan in Alaska.

1) Holualoa, Hawaii

2) Ely, Nevada

3) Anna Maria Island, Florida

4) Old Koloa Town, Hawaii

5) West Yellowstone, Montana

6) Gatlinburg, Tennessee

7) Chincoteague, Virginia

8) Sitka, Alaska

9) Sedona, Arizona

10) Ketchikan, Alaska

America’s Happiest Seaside Town

Not included in the survey but very deserving of a special mention, Southport in North Carolina Brunswick Islands is the perfect escape from nearby cities, with its vibrant history, picturesque film settings, and charming downtown area.

This 2.2 square mile town has earned its nickname of “America’s Happiest Seaside Town” by Coastal Living Magazine, making it an ideal destination for families and couples seeking a tranquil atmosphere combined with southern hospitality.

When the entertainment industry needs a perfect beachside town to show off, Southport is their go-to. Visitors will love exploring the many movie scenes filmed in this quaint town, including popular movies such as Safe Haven and A Walk to Remember.

Follow in the footsteps of celebrities with a guidebook for an exciting journey through film sets. You may even be lucky enough to get cast as an extra on current productions.

“Visiting small towns has become increasingly popular as travelers seek authentic and personalized experiences that provide a break from the fast-paced, commercialized world. These hidden gems offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture, connect with friendly communities, and escape the stress of everyday life,” says Rose Ackermann of FamilyDestinationsGuide.com.

The Best Strategies When Playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon | Wealth of Geeks

Imagine your perfect game night. Whether it is at home with your family or a party with friends, there are the tried and true staples of games we love to play. Mystery lovers adore Clue. Strategists enjoy Risk and Monopoly (in their many forms). There’s Life and Sorry, Trivial Pursuit, and Family Feud. But a fun-filled game night can include something other than board games.

Charades and karaoke are always a hit. But if you’re a movie fan, one of the most fun games we can partake in is a lively game of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

If you are unfamiliar with the game, it was invented in 1994 by three college students, Craig Fass, Brian Turtle, and Mike Ginelli. After watching two movies with Bacon one evening back to back, they postulated that Bacon is the center of the entertainment industry. So they created this game that says almost any actor can be linked back to Bacon in six steps or less.

Their game garnered national attention when the trio appeared on The Jon Stewart Show and The Howard Stern Show (with Bacon himself) explaining the game. And thus, a phenomenon was born.

Since its inception, this game has entered the cultural zeitgeist. And while a board game version is now available, we can play this with simply a knowledge of Bacon’s filmography, the movies, and actors in general. Playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon is very simple. You can play individually or as a team.

You begin by giving the opposing player(s) an actor, who must link that actor back to Bacon in six steps or less. Sometimes you can feel stumped and thrown for a loop. But if you can employ the best methods we discuss, you will surely be a winner. If you want to dominate or impress your fellow players during your next match, several strategies will leave your competition in the dust.

The Landmark Films of Kevin Bacon

The most prevalent strategy when playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon is using the “Landmark Films” of his career. These are the movies that Bacon has starred in that bolster large and incredibly impressive ensemble casts. So when playing, chances are you will arrive at one of these films as your final degree.

And although ending with one of these movies is commonplace, that does not mean this is a rudimentary or poor strategy.

The first of these films is undoubtedly used the most as your final step: A Few Good Men. This courtroom drama from 1994 has a staggering cast of lead and supporting players that can prove key in your gameplaying. These actors include Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kevin Pollack, Keifer Sutherland, Noah Wylie, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Christopher Guest.

Actors like Cruise and Nicholson are excellent links, as both have had long and varied careers. A cruise can be linked to anyone from character actors like Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames, Oscar winners like Dustin Hoffman and Renée Zellweger, and leading ladies like Cameron Diaz and Emily Blunt. He also links current stars such as Glen Powell and Miles Teller, who starred with Cruise in the 2022 juggernaut Top Gun: Maverick.

Nicholson could be an even more helpful link to Bacon if you are given an older actor or no longer with us, as Nicholson’s career began in the 1960s. He has starred in films with performers such as Faye Dunaway, Jessica Lange, Shelley Duvall, Helen Hunt, Morgan Freeman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Angelica Huston, Reese Witherspoon, and Diane Keaton, to name a few.

All these actors, and many of Nicholson’s co-stars, have careers as illustrious as they come, providing valuable steps in the game. You will surely win this round if you can link back to Cruise or Nicholson.

Besides Cruise and Nicholson, the other actors in A Few Good Men are excellent links to employ in your game-playing strategy. Someone like Kevin Pollack is wonderful because character actors often appear in more films than the leading actor types and all kinds of genres.

Likewise, Christopher Guest is a useful link as the creator of a slew of quirky ensemble films like Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and A Prairie Home Companion. Remembering who stars in these films, you can swiftly link back to Bacon if given actors such as Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Lindsay Lohan, and more. Of course, Guest has starred in many films. If someone was attempting to stump you with someone like Wallace Shawn or Andre the Giant, one need only two steps to get to Bacon, using the film The Princess Bride, which co-stars Guest as the, ironically, six-fingered man, Count Reugan.

Even More Landmark Kevin Bacon Films

The other “Landmark Films” from Bacon’s filmography that are the best ending points for this game are undoubtedly Apollo 13, Mystic River, and JFK. The cast of Apollo 13 includes Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Ed Harris, and Gary Sinise, making it an easy step to other films such as The Green Mile, Titanic, and National Treasure: Book of Secrets. You would have an easy path. Likewise, if given character actors like Patricia Clarkson, Sam Rockwell, Diane Kruger, Kathy Bates, or Billy Zane.

Mystic River has a just as impressive and potentially helpful cast of performers: Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Laura Linney, Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden, Emmy Rossum, and Eli Wallach. Anyone of these actors is a fantastic stepping stone in your gameplay. Do you think linking Kevin Bacon to Disney darling Hayley Mills is challenging? It isn’t when using Mystic River because Mills starred in the 1960s drama The Moon-Spinners with Wallach.

And lastly, with JFK, we see a fantastic cast that includes Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Jack Lemmon, and Walter Matthau. Again, the cast is exceptional, but they tie directly into the other strategies you can employ to be the best player possible.

Genre Ensemble Films

Employing the “Landmark Films” from Bacon may be the most significant and prevalent strategy you will use because these movies can be your ending spot. But other films can be used in a similarly significant and frequent way. Namely, these are ensemble romantic and teen comedies from the 1980s to the 2000s, murder mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, and superhero films.

While there are many films in each genre, specific ones are good to keep in your back “gameplaying” pocket. Regarding romantic comedies, the pinnacle films are Love Actually and the Gary Marshall-directed holiday films Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve, and Mother’s Day. Love Actually is an obvious choice as it stars one of Bacon’s Mystic River co-stars, Laura Linney.

Moreover, its other cast members are some of Britain’s best, like Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Bill Nighy, all of which can be connected to any number of actors you could be given as a starting point.

The Gary Marshall rom-coms are also stepping stones because they star the “Who’s Who” of Hollywood, such as Julia Roberts (who would be only two degrees to Bacon, having starred in two films with Tom Hanks). The casts of these films also range from movie stars like Anne Hathaway and Bradley Cooper and character actors like Margo Martindale and Sarah Paulson.

And one must not forget a few of the notable rom-coms Bacon had starred in, namely Crazy, Stupid Love and Picture Perfect. So if needing a link from actors like Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore, or Jennifer Aniston, the path to Bacon is easy if you end on one of these charmers.

Teen Comedies

Teen comedies are also always an excellent genre to remember when strategizing. Specifically speaking, the best are She’s All That and Can’t Hardly Wait. Both movies have casts that are stacked and include actors that are still working today. Moreover, some are only a few degrees to Bacon, such as Ethan Embry (in That Thing You Do with Tom Hanks).

In the case of She’s All That, any cast member can be linked because that film features Kevin Pollack, Bacon’s co-star from A Few Good Men.

Other teen comedies you could utilize would be Easy A, The Breakfast Club, Mean Girls, and Clueless, to name a few.

Murder Mysteries

Regarding other genre films, murder mysteries, especially recent ones like Agatha Christie-based Murder and the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, and Rian Johnson’s Knives Out and Glass Onion, are imperative staples to have in your repertoire of knowledge while playing. This is not only because these films have large casts but also because they include actors of vastly different ages.

And thus, you are given links to classic and modern eras of film. Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana de Armas, and Janelle Monaé would be prime examples of this concept.

Fantasy and Sci-Fi Universes

The same strategy can apply to fantasy franchises such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and the superhero Marvel and DC universes. The number of actors in these films is vast and varied and another essential component to utilize when playing the game. Anyone from Maggie Smith, Ian McKellen, Paul Rudd, Carrie Fisher, and Robert Redford can potentially link back to Bacon.

Bacon has even starred in the genre, portraying Sebastian Shaw in X-Men: First Class alongside James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence.

The critical thing to remember is who stars in these films. With enough knowledge of the actors featured in any of these films, winning can be a walk and the park. And you will look like a star in the process. That is truly the key to mastering Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Remember The Early Films of Kevin Bacon

While Films like A Few Good Men and Mystic River will often be your last degree while playing, remembering Bacon’s earlier films can also be handy. For example, do you remember that Bacon had a small cameo in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles? If you are given or can link back to that film’s stars, Steve Martin and John Candy, that’s all you’ll need.

Films such as Footloose and Diner have strong potential to be a final step with casts that include John Lithgow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mickey Rourke, Steve Gutenberg, and Ellen Barkin.

Likewise, The River Wild and Tremors have eclectic casts of performers that have tremendous linkage potential, including heavy hitters like Meryl Streep and David Strathairn and character actors like Fred Ward and John C. Reilly.

Actors With Long Careers

When playing, your opponent or opposing team often attempts to stump you by giving you an obscure actor or one from many years ago. If you are given a performer from the classic era of film, the best strategy is to think of actors with careers that span many decades and then try to find a connection.

For example, you may think the musical actress of the 1950s, Jane Powell, would be tough to link back to Bacon. But when utilizing two actors who had long careers (Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman), a path can be achieved in less than six steps:

  1. Jane Powell was in A Date With Judy with Elizabeth Taylor
  2. Elizabeth Taylor was in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Paul Newman
  3. Paul Newman was in Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks
  4. Tom Hanks was in Apollo 13 with Kevin Bacon

Paul Newman isn’t the only actor whose career was long and, therefore, has excellent potential for your game-playing. Bacon’s JFK and Mystic River co-stars Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, and Eli Wallach are terrific examples. Some other prime examples would be Mickey Rooney, Carl Reiner, Jane Fonda, Angela Lansbury, Robert Redford, Norman Lloyd, Rita Moreno, Michael Caine, Marlon Brando, Ricardo Montalban, Eva Marie Saint, and Max von Sydow.

Bonus Round: Utilize Television

When playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, you are meant only to use films with each link. But given the different nature of television in the modern era, especially with streaming and the caliber of shows produced, you can bend the rules if you choose. Utilizing television could make gameplay easier because it broadens the possibilities.

In this day in age of film, actors no longer look at television as secondary or “less than,” so there are countless shows with high-caliber casts and guest stars. If you can link back to any actor on the show Once Upon a Time, the path to Bacon is easy because the show’s lead, Jennifer Morrison, was in Stir of Echoes with Bacon. Moreover, he has guest starred as himself on both Will & Grace and Bored to Death and starred in the Showtime Drama City on the Hill with Aldis Hodge and Jill Hennessy.

Final Thoughts

So, the next time you play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, all the strategies we’ve discussed are a surefire way to win the game. Whether you utilize one or all of these strategies, you will undoubtedly impress everyone so much that you could compete with Bacon himself. The most important thing is always to have fun and remain footloose.
