Can You Live on $40,000 a Year? – Dollarsanity

You’re scouring the job postings, searching for that perfect job.

You see a job that catches your eye. You think you’d be perfect for the position. The job description says it pays $40,000 per year.

That sounds like a pretty good salary.  But how do you know how much $40,000 per year is how much an hour?

Is that an amount you can live well on or are you going to be broke?

Before you accept that job offer, it’s important to understand just how much $40,000 per year really is.

MORE: 10 High Paying Jobs with No Experience Required

Let’s break down how much $40,000 per year equates to

40,000 per year = 19.23 per hour (40 hours per week)

40,000 per year = 153.84 per day (8 hour day)

40,000 per year = 769.23 per week (52 weeks per year)

40,000 per year = 3,333.33 per month (12 months per year)

These numbers look pretty good, right?!

Well, there’s one catch:  these are what you’d make before taxes, and we all know that Uncle Sam has to get his share of our pay, so you have to take taxes out of your paycheck to get to your “real” take-home pay.

I always figure on 25% of gross pay will go towards taxes.  This amount is an estimate and it could be higher or lower depending on what state you live in and the number of exemptions you selected.

So with taking out 25% for taxes, here’s what you’ll NET on 40,000 per year:

19.23 x 25% taxes = 4.80 for taxes.  19.23 -4.80 = 14.43 Net Per Hour.

152.84 x 25% taxes = 38.21 for taxes.  152.84 – 38.21 = 114.63 Net Per Day.

769.23 x 25% taxes = 192.30 for taxes.  769.23-192.30 = 576.93 Net Per Week.

3333.33 x 25% taxes = 833.33 for taxes.  3333.33-833.33= 2500.00 Net Per Month

Keep in mind you’ll always have to pay Federal taxes but if you live in one of the states that don’t tax wages, you won’t have to worry about losing some of your hard-earned money to the state tax man.

Here are the states that don’t tax wages. If you don’t currently live in one of these states and you’re looking to move, you may want to check into one of these states that don’t tax wages:   Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, New Hampshire, and Tennessee.

Is $40,000 A Good Salary?

Well, the answer is, that depends.  It depends on a few factors.

The number one thing to take into consideration when considering if 40,000 is a good salary is the number of people in your household that you’re supporting.

Supporting a couple obviously costs less than supporting a family.  Another thing to take into consideration that may not be so obvious is where do you live?

Another important factor to take into account when evaluating a salary is your location.

You may not have considered the fact that some cities are more expensive to live in than others.

The cost of living in Florida is going to be a lot less than what you’d have to pay to live in a big city like New York City.

For my husband and me, $40,000 is less than what we’re spending today, but if we had to make it on $40,000 we could cut back on expenses and be just fine.

Here’s what our budget would look like on $40,000 per year or $2500.00 per month.  Keep in mind the most important thing I think a person can do is to save money!

Whether you’re saving for retirement, saving to build up your emergency fund or saving for a rainy day, just stash money away every month.

This is why I list savings at the top of my budget.  And, I always try to save a minimum of 15% of take home pay.

This budget shows how to save 15% and still be able to pay for day to day life

Here is the same $2500.00, this time budgeted for a family of 4:

  • Housing:  $800
  • Savings:  $225
  • Car Pymt:  $200
  • Utilities $200
  • Insurance:  $200
  • Phone:  $50
  • Food:  $400
  • Personal:  $250
  • Entertainment:  $175

The biggest difference here in the family budget is a slightly lower savings rate, a slightly lower entertainment budge and a higher food budget.

So you can see that $40,000 per year is a livable wage for couples or families.

That said, you’ll have to be on top of your money game to make it work.  I’d recommend setting up a simple budget so you can track your expenses every month to make sure you don’t overspend.

Also, you’ll definitely want to make sure you save money each month.

Putting money away regularly is the single most important thing you can do for your financial future.

Why Is Saving So Important?

Simply put, there’s absolutely nothing like the power of compound interest.

You’ll want to start saving as early as possible and as much as possible to let your money multiple via the magic of compound interest.

According to US News and World Reports, they have some nice studies showing the power of saving only $5 per day and after 40 years, you’ll have $400,000.00.

Increase the amount to $15 per day and you’ll have a cool 1 Million dollars after 40 years.  I know some people will read that and think “but it’s going to take so long!

And that’s true, 40 years is a long time, but the way I look at it, those 40 years are going to go by one way or another.

So, whether you choose to save over those years, in the end, 40 years will still have gone by.  So you may as well use that time to your advantage and save!!   And, you should bump up your savings rate anytime you can.

How Do You Increase Savings?

Create A Budget And Stick To It

If you have a monthly budget, you have power over your money and your money is working for you.

If you get a raise, the amount budgeted for savings goes up.  If you pay off a bill, that expense goes away and you can decide where you’ll put that money going forward.

It’s so great to see exactly where your money goes each month and there’s no better feeling than knowing this is YOUR budget and YOU are in control.  And, since you’re in control, you can change your budget anytime!

Try a side hustle

There are a million ways to make extra money.  With the plethora of online jobs these days, many times you don’t even have to leave your house to pull down extra cash.

I’ve had a lot of different side jobs over the years and while I haven’t loved every one of them, I have learned something from each of them and have met some really nice people.  And, I get paid!  So even if I don’t totally love the job, as long as I’m learning and getting paid, it’s a win in my book.

Raises or Anytime you get a raise or a bonus, put that amount into your savings.  You never had that extra money before so pretend you don’t have it now.  You’ll never miss it!  The same goes for cash gifts on your birthday or at Christmas time.

Wrap Up

So now you can feel confident that you know exactly how much 40,000 per year is and whether that’s a good salary for you and your family.

If you don’t think you’ll be satisfied with earning 40,000 per year, you can always take on a side gig to help increase your income.  However,  with my sample budgets,

I think you’ll see that with careful planning and sticking to a budget, it’s possible to support a couple or a family on  $40,000 per year.

Who is Captain Rex in Star Wars? | Wealth of Geeks

Over the years, Clone troopers have become a cornerstone of the Star Wars universe, existing side-by-side with other notable elements of the series like lightsabers, starfighters, and even the Force itself (things that essentially make the Star Wars series what it is).

While Stormtroopers are sure to retain their iconic pop culture status as the decades go by, Clones have steadily risen to the forefront of Star Wars’ fandom. This surge in popularity can be most directly attributed to their appearances in fan-favorite TV series, like The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Bad Batch.

In those shows (and most especially in The Clone Wars), ordinary Clone troopers are given a prominent place alongside their Jedi commanders, each Clone possessing their own distinct personality and physical appearances. For example, there’s the tactful, reserved Commander Cody, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s right-hand man in the 212th Attack Battalion; the energetic, explosive-addicted Wrecker of Clone Force 99; and the dedicated leader of the 501st Legion, Captain Rex.

Out of all the Clones featured in Star Wars’ Extended Universe, Captain Rex is given the most in-depth exploration, his character serving major or supporting roles in virtually every TV series created by Dave Filoni. The second-in-command of Anakin Skywalker and, later, Ahsoka Tano in the Clone Wars, Rex later became a hero of the Rebellion during the Galactic Civil War. He’s come face to face with some of the galaxy’s most credible foes, from Sith disciples like Asajj Ventress to infamous bounty hunters like Cad Bane.

Given Rex’s prominent place in the Star Wars universe and his personal connection to notable characters like Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka, it’s helpful to know a few things about the 501st Clone Commander, especially for those who are unfamiliar with The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, or Rebels.

At the offset of the Clone Wars, Clone commanders were assigned to serve under Jedi Knights, aiding in the Republic war effort against the encroaching Separatist forces. In the early months of the conflict, Rex and the 501st Legion were sent to join Anakin Skywalker. During these earliest days of the war, Anakin’s bravery, unorthodox approach to warfare, and absolute loyalty to the Republic came to rub off on Rex, who mirrored his Jedi commander’s personality more and more as the war went on (an attribute shared by most Clone officers in regards to their Jedi commanders).

Amid the Battle of Christophsis in 19 BBY, Anakin was ordered to take the teenage Togruta Jedi Ahsoka Tano as his padawan, overseeing her training throughout the remainder of the Clone Wars. For the next few years, Anakin, Ahsoka, and Rex all became increasingly close to each other, their relationship on the battlefield soon evolving into a personal friendship between the three. Demonstrating an undying loyalty to his friends and to the soldiers under his command, Rex routinely led the 501st Legion into some of the war’s worst battles alongside Anakin and Ahsoka, fighting on Ryloth, Felucia, Kamino, and Geonosis. As the war drew on, Rex also continued to cement his friendship with the fellow Clones he served with, most notably Commander Cody and 501st soldiers (later ARC Troopers) Echo and Fives.

In the final stages of the Clone Wars, Rex’s dedication to the Republic and his unwavering belief in its ideals started to unravel. In 20 BBY, Rex and his men participated in the costly Battle of Umbara, which saw their temporary Jedi Commander, Pong Krell, betray his men, pitting Clones against Clones in an effort to secure a Separatist victory on the planet.

One year later, Rex witnessed a dejected Ahsoka leave the Jedi Order after being wrongfully implicated in the bombing of the Jedi Temple. Not long after, Fives – who had gone rogue upon discovering a sinister plot to destroy the Jedi (known as Order 66) – was killed by his Clone brethren as part of a cover-up to ensure Order 66’s continued secrecy. While Rex was devastated to learn of his friend’s death, his early knowledge of the Clone inhibitor chips ultimately came in handy, allowing him to escape the directives of Order 66 months later.

Surviving Order 66

In 19 BBY, a joyful Rex was reunited with Ahsoka Tano, having been ordered to aid the former Jedi in her mission to liberate Mandalore from Maul’s Shadow Collective. Donning customized helmets to reflect their new Jedi commander, Rex broke off a small contingent of the 501st Legion and reorganized them into the 332nd Company. Joining Ahsoka and Mandalorian loyalists led by Bo-Katan Kryze, Rex and the 332nd Company quickly overwhelmed Maul’s forces on the planet’s surface, capturing the former Sith Lord and freeing the planet from Maul’s puppet government.

As they traveled back to Coruscant onboard a Republic Star Destroyer, Chancellor Palpatine formally issued Order 66, triggering every Clones’ inhibitor chip, effectively turning them against their Jedi commanders. Like all of his fellow Clones, Rex promptly set his sights on terminating Ahsoka, although he managed to fight the effects of his chip long enough to warn Ahsoka of the betrayal, telling her to remove his inhibitor chip the first chance she had.

Momentarily fleeing the now homicidal Clones, Ahsoka managed to stun Rex long enough to surgically remove the chip, restoring Rex to his former, even-tempered self. Recognizing the danger to Ahsoka’s life, Rex and Ahsoka tried to escape from the ship before the 332nd Company could close in. Around the same time, a recently-escaped Maul began damaging the vessel beyond repair, sending the Destroyer crashing into a nearby moon. Escaping in the nick of time onboard a stolen Y-wing, Ahsoka and Rex buried the fallen Clones on the moon’s surface, making it appear as though they perished in the crash. They then secretly attended the funeral service of Padmé Amidala on Naboo.

On the Run

Having faked their deaths, Rex separated from Ahsoka, fleeing into the largely chaotic Outer Rims in the hopes of outrunning the Empire’s increasingly tight grip over the galaxy. Living a fugitive lifestyle, Rex rapidly moved from planet to planet, carrying on the Republic’s main ideals in his own private war against the newly-formed Empire. Recruiting two smugglers who happened to be former acquaintances of Ahsoka (Trace and Rafa Martez) to his cause, Rex eventually reunited with the members of Clone Force 99, who had similarly gone rogue and were working against the Empire.

While the Bad Batch never formally agreed to join Rex’s freedom-fighting group – believing that fighting on behalf of the Republic was a lost cause – they did aid in several of Rex’s missions, including rescuing the captured Clone commando Gregor. As Rex continued to carry out his crusade against Palpatine’s new regime, he began to notice that an increasingly larger number of Clone troopers had started to revert back to their former personalities – the effects of the inhibitor chips slowly wearing off. Seeing this, Rex began to focus more of his time rehabilitating his Clone brothers, providing them with safety once they snapped out of their Imperial-induced trance.

Combating the Empire

For the next decade, Rex helps rescue and reform veterans of the Clone Wars whom he knew and served with, moving into a residence with Gregor and Commander Wolffe on Seelos. In 4 BBY, Rex is contacted by the crew of the Ghost on behalf of Ahsoka, who is searching for potential members for her growing underground resistance movement. Mutually distrustful of each other at first, the former Clone commanders eventually agree to pool their efforts with the Lothal Rebel cell, aiding them in various sabotage missions against the Empire. Having joined this new Rebel group, Rex once again met with Ahsoka, 15 years after their previous encounter during Order 66.

Though he was initially disdainful towards the Clones for their role in the Great Jedi Purge, Ghost crew member Kanan Jarrus was to put aside his past animosity long enough to form a rich friendship with Rex as they carried out missions together. While he was physically much older as a result of the Clones’ advanced aging process, Rex demonstrated the same ferocity and bravery he had exhibited in the Clone Wars during this time. His service would come at a cost – with Gregor losing his life during the Rebellion’s repeated clashes with the Empire – but Rex’s military expertise helped the Alliance gain a valuable edge over the Empire in the early days of the Galactic Civil War.

After helping the Ghost crew liberate the planet of Lothal from the Empire, Rex was promoted to the rank of commander within the Rebel Alliance, serving the Rebellion with outright dedication and loyalty. Most tellingly, Rex was handpicked by Han Solo for an elite task force assigned to infiltrate the Imperial facility on Endor. As a ferocious dogfight took place in space and as his former Jedi master, Anakin Skywalker, redeemed himself by killing the tyrannical Emperor, Rex faithfully fought in the Battle of Endor, surviving the conflict and living to see the end of not one, but two momentous wars in the galaxy.

1. Mod Santorini, Greece

Santorini. Greece.

Overlooking Santorini’s sun-drenched Cycladic architecture and the sparkling Aegean Sea beyond, Mod Santorini is the first vegan and sustainable accommodation on the island. The hotel is owned by Anargyros Fousteris and Christina Boutros, both passionate vegans and animal lovers who are dedicated to creating a destination for like-minded travelers. Their hotel has become just that—a haven for earth-conscious guests unwilling to sacrifice comfort or style.

From the homecooked plant-based breakfast to the toiletries and cleaning products used in the rooms, the property comes together to create a truly holistic wellness retreat. One of the highlights? All the rooms include minibars featuring local vegan wine (wine is often filtered using animal products such as bone marrow, egg whites, or fish bladders.)

2. Saorsa 1875, Scotland

Scotland.

The U.K.’s first fully vegan hotel, this eclectic property in the highland town of Pitlochry is set in a Gothic-Revival style building straight from the pages of a moody Victorian novel. While Saorsa 1875 provides cozy communal space and 11 hip, design-forward rooms with highlands views, the property is all about the food.

The chic, pub-style restaurant is 100 percent vegan, and its inventive menu of globally inspired dishes is laser-focused on providing local, seasonal, and even foraged produce. After lunch or dinner, lounge by the roaring fire with a creative cocktail, a local craft beer, or a glass from the exquisitely curated wine list.

3. La Vimea Vegan Hotel, Italy

Set in Naturno against a backdrop of the Tyrolean mountains, this woodsy adults-only getaway imbues wellness with a decidedly Italian flair. The minimalist vibe and chalet-style atmosphere give La Vimea Vegan Hotel that old-school Italian charm. Relaxation seekers will revel in the natural swimming pond, yoga and meditation classes, and spa treatments using only organic and plant-based products.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite on a hike through the Texel Group Nature Park in South Tyrol (just a short walk from the hotel), take a seat in the property’s gourmet restaurant for a scrumptious vegan meal bursting with color and creativity.

All things wellness are also offered, including a healing studio for reiki, yoga, and sound healing, plus individually designed paintings in each room that activate your different chakras.

This rustic retreat on the island of Mallorca is an animal lover’s paradise. The family-owned, farmhouse-style property was one of the first 100 percent vegan hotels in all of Europe and is located within a seven-acre conservation area filled with roaming wildlife. Villa Vegana’s remote location among palm trees and local flora feels miles away from the demands of reality, and the panoramic views of the Tramuntana Mountains give the location an even more dreamlike feel. A global menu of vegan comfort food features unique interpretations of dishes from as far-flung as Peru, Scandinavia, and India.

8. The Farm at San Benito, Philippines

San Benito Phillipines.

This remote, eco-chic resort is surrounded by 128 acres of lush tropical jungle only 90 minutes south of Manila. While the property is a plant-based destination, the medical wellness program takes the vegan lifestyle a step further by incorporating raw food options, detox cleanses, and holistic medical consultations. Lounge about in your luxurious suite or villa with a private jungle-view pool before grabbing a bite in one of three farm-to-table restaurants (vegan, vegetarian, and pescatarian). But perhaps the piece de resistance of The Farm at San Benito is the holistic medical sanctuary spa featuring hydrotherapy, medical advice, and traditional Philippine healing treatments using 100 percent virgin coconut oil.

Knowing that your vacation features mindful, sustainable food, drink, room, and beauty options that are good for both animals and the environment makes a getaway at a vegan hotel the ultimate in guilt-free mind and body relaxation.

12 Stores Like Walmart for Budget Shopping – Dollarsanity

Like most people, you’ve likely shopped at Walmart at some point.

The retail giant is known for its wide selection of products at low prices, making it a go-to destination for budget-conscious shoppers. But what if you’re looking for something different or just want to mix up your shopping routine?

Fortunately, there are plenty of stores like Walmart out there that offer a similar shopping experience but with their unique flair. Let’s check some of the best alternatives to Walmart and what sets them apart.

Target – A Walmart Rival

Target has long been a rival to Walmart and for good reason.

They are Walmart with a touch of fashion-forward sensibilities. The two stores are often compared due to their similar merchandise offerings and low prices.

Target is known for its trendy and stylish home décor, clothing, and accessories. Similar to Walmart, Target features a grocery section, but with a slightly upscale feel.

Another feature that sets Target apart is its use of designer collaborations, such as its partnership with Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia line.

Dollar Tree – Cheap But Cheerful

If your main reason for shopping at Walmart is to snag a bargain, consider heading to the nearest Dollar Tree. From food to toys, the store has a broad range of items priced at, you guessed it, one dollar (or sometimes less).

While the quality may sometimes be the highest, Dollar Tree has a wide variety of inexpensive everyday items that are perfect for stretching your dollar a little bit further.

Costco – Bulk Buy, Save More

While Walmart may be the place to shop for cheap toilet paper and cleaning supplies, Costco is the go-to spot for bulk items.

You can find almost anything you need in large quantities, from groceries to electronics and home goods. Costco also features a pharmacy, a food court, and a gas station.

While the Costco membership fee is higher than your average shopping spot (around $60 per year), the benefits of bulk shopping can be significant, especially if you have a large family or run a small business.

Aldi – A German Import

Although it originated in Germany, Aldi has quickly become one of the most popular discount grocery stores in The United States. Aldi offers everyday low prices on a variety of items and fresh produce.

Unlike Walmart, Aldi has a smaller store footprint, so you don’t have to wander through massive stores to find what you need. The chains’ shopping carts are borrowed by dropping a quarter deposit, a unique feature that has proven to be a hit with frugal shoppers.

Amazon – The Mind-boggling Option

If you are looking to avoid crowds altogether, then consider Amazon. Due to its online nature, Amazon offers almost everything you could ever want, from groceries to electronics, all at the click of a button.

They also provide free and speedy shipping on many items with an Amazon Prime membership. Moreover, the online retailer has made it easy to shop for high-quality food and household necessities from the comfort of your home.

Amazon is an excellent option for those who are okay with waiting a little bit longer for their items to arrive or, in some cases, the elusive “same-day delivery option.

Big Lots – A Treasure Trove of Discount Items

If you love to bargain hunt, you should visit Big Lots. Big Lots offer discounted items in almost every category, including furniture, home decor, and groceries.

While the stores may not be as visually appealing as Walmart’s, the items available are often just as good, if not better, in quality.

Plus, with ongoing sales and even a rewards program, shopping at Big Lots feels like a treasure hunt; you never know what you might find.

Dollar General – Discount Convenience

Like Walmart, Dollar General is a discount store with an extensive range of household and grocery items. Dollar General offers the option of shopping online or going to one of their many brick-and-mortar stores.

With their Everyday Low Prices and weekly sales, Dollar General has become a popular shopping destination for those looking to save a few dollars. Plus, with their large selection of items, you can get everything from cleaning supplies to pet food in one convenient location.

While the prices can be higher, Bloomingdale’s offers sales and clearance events throughout the year. Bloomingdale’s is an excellent option if you’re looking to splurge on yourself or gift someone special.

Macy’s

Macy’s has been around for over 160 years, and it’s still going strong. You can find products that range from home furnishings to clothing and beauty products.

Macy’s has a similar feel to Walmart, with vibrant and well-organized stores. The prices can vary depending on the product, but sales and discounts are always available. You can also sign up for exclusive discounts and rewards for their loyalty program.

Kohl’s

Kohl’s is another department store that has a lot to offer shoppers. This chain has been around since the 1960s and has stores nationwide. Kohl’s offers clothing, shoes, home goods, and even electronics.

One of the things that sets Kohl’s apart from Walmart is its coupon system. You can find coupons online or in-store that give you up to 30% off your purchase. Kohl’s also has a rewards program that allows you to accumulate points to redeem for discounts.

Kohl’s has a wide range of products at multiple price points and often has sales and clearance events. If you’re looking for a store with a bit of everything, reliable quality, and great deals, Kohl’s is a top contender.

Nordstrom

Nordstrom is a department store known for its high-end products and exceptional customer service. Many people associate Nordstrom with clothing, but it has a broad range of products, including beauty, home goods, and electronics.

While Walmart focuses on affordability, Nordstrom is all about luxury. The stores are beautifully designed, and the products are meticulously curated to ensure you’re getting the best. Nordstrom offers designer clothing and accessories, making it an excellent option for shoppers who want to invest in high-quality pieces.

Nordstrom’s price points are high but they offer sales and discounts throughout the year. They also have a rewards program to earn you points for future purchases.

Overstock

Overstock is an online retailer that has been around for nearly 20 years. This store specializes in home goods and furniture but also offers clothing, electronics, and jewelry. The prices are often lower than what you’ll find at other retailers, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious shoppers.

One of the advantages of shopping at Overstock is the ability to find unique and hard-to-find items. Overstock sells products from a wide range of brands and designers, so you can find products you won’t see in other stores.

Overstock also has a rewards program that allows you to earn points toward future purchases. They frequently offer sales and promotions as well.

Final Thoughts

While Walmart may be the most well-known discount store in the US, several other options are available to shoppers looking for similar options.

These stores can provide different shopping experiences, from bulk buy savings to stylish home decor. Whether you prefer to shop in-store or online, these stores offer quality options that are affordable for any budget.

Snowflaking: 30 Ways to Snowflake Your Debt Away

Most people that have decided to take control of their finances and reduce their debt have come across at least one of the various debt snowball methods. Basically, creating a debt snowball is a way to arrange one’s debt so as to tackle a single debt at a time (to more efficiently pay off the debts) than trying to pay off all the debts at the same time. It’s an effective way to arrange the debt so that there is the greatest opportunity to succeed in paying it all off.

Add Debt Snowflaking To Your Debt Snowball

While the vast majority of people who adopt the debt snowball method pay what they can from their regular salary each month and leave it at that, there is a way to be even more proactive. For those who are truly serious about getting rid of the debt that they have as soon as possible, they can add debt snowflakes to the debt snowball.

The debt snowflake concept is pretty easy to understand. A snowball is simply a lot of individual snowflakes that have been combined together to make a snowball. While each individual snowflake may seem small on its own, when added together they can greatly increase the size of the snowball. The goal is to create as many new snowflakes as possible to float down and add upon your regular monthly debt snowball payment.

Create Lots of Small Earnings To Snowflake Your Debt

Snowfaking debt is creating small alternative earnings earned outside your regular income which then can be added to paying off debt. As the snowflake concept implies, the amount doesn’t matter. Whether it’s a single dollar, five dollars or even a few pennies, every little “snowflake” made can be added to further reduce debt at a faster pace.

The key to snowflaking success is to immediately pay any small amount earned directly to the top priority debt of the snowball (make sure that multiple payments toward the debt are allowed each month — in most cases they should be, but there can be exceptions). One of the reasons snowflaking often fails is that all the small amounts earned never get sent to reduce the debt. Since the amounts are often small, if they aren’t used right away to reduce the debt, they can accidentally be forgotten when the snowball payment is made. By immediately paying any small amount received also helps to show that you’re chipping away at the debt throughout the month in addition to the snowball payment. This can provide an even greater motivation to get rid of the debt as soon as possible.

If you take a survey that pays you two dollars, if you sell something you no longer need for five dollars, or if happen to find a dollar on the ground while walking across the parking lot, it should be immediately sent to reduce the top debt the snowball to increase its effectiveness. By constantly and consistently adding small snowflaking amounts in addition to the monthly debt snowball, the debt will disappear that much faster.

List Of Ways To Snowflake Your Debt

There are a wide variety of ways that you can make small amounts of money to snowflake your debt away. Take the time to brainstorm to figure out any way that you might be able to bring in a few extra dollars (or even a lot) each week in your spare time. Here are a few possible ways to consider. Obviously, not all will necessarily work for you or be something that you may feel appropriate for you, but they should help to get your creative juices flowing so that you can figure out a few money earners that will work for you:

Take Surveys

Most survey apps take a lot of time and pay little.  The one exception to this is 1Q.  It pay something like 25 cents per question, which is about TEN times higher than any of the other survey apps out there.  The advantage is they also pay you directly and immediately to your Paypal account.  Which is great because then you can send the payment to your debt right away.   I’ve used them several times, definitely recommended.

Get 1Q here.

Sell Your Spare Internet Bandwidth

Most people have wireless internet in their homes these days, and frankly, most people don’t use all of it.  There are several reputable companies that will pay you to use your spare internet.  They use it for market research purposes, such as accessing airline price ticketing info, gathering web statistics, and business processes like that.

The best app in this space is called EarnApp. They pay about 45 cents per gigabyte and also pay you automatically to Paypal.  You literally just have to install the app and collect.

Get Earn App here

Penny Hoard

There are a lot of people that penny hoard these days. Basically, the copper found in pre-1982 pennies is worth more than the penny itself. Investors want these pennies, but often don’t want to spend the time sorting them from post-1982 pennies. Since the copper is more valuable than the penny, these investors are willing to pay a premium for pre-1982 pennies that still can easily be found in circulation. Collect, sort and sell pre-1982 pennies to investors for profit — currently a $100 worth of pennies is selling for about $175 on eBay (with the buyer paying shipping). And with all those pennies, you will have plenty of activities to keep you entertained if you desire.

Collect Scrap Metals

Scrap aluminum, copper and other metals have value and can easily be sold to any metal recyclers. If you take morning or evening strolls, there is a good opportunity to find discarded scraps depending where your walks take you. If there is a lot of construction going on in your area, there may be quite a few metal scraps for the picking. You can also check with your employer who may also have some scrap metal that will simply be thrown away if they do not recycle themselves.

Sell Coupons

You know all those coupons that you end up throwing into the trash? People actually sell them and if you are good at getting a large number of them, you can make some money selling coupons as a coupon broker. Since coupons can be gathered for free with a bit of time and effort, this is one way to make money without needing a monetary investment.

Do Drug Studies

If you are willing to be a human lab rat, you can make a decent amount of money. There are actually people that do medical testing for their full time income, but even small studies with little risk can add some extra money to put toward your debts.

Teach

If you have a skill or are good at something, offer to teach it in your spare time. It doesn’t have to be limited to academics. It could be a hobby, a passion or simply a unique skill you possess. I have a friend that takes people on hikes teaching them about edible plants in the area. I have another that teaches people to extreme coupon. You could even teach people how to debt snowball and snowflake for a nominal fee.

Find Money

There is a lot of money lying on the ground waiting to be found if you know where to look. I end up finding over $100 in coins on the ground each year and I don’t make any special effort to find them other than on my regular walks (although I do walk a lot more than the average person). If you make a concerted effort to find dropped and lost money, this could be a great way to add to your snowflaking while getting needed exercise as a bonus.

Create Crafts

If you enjoy creating things, take that passion and begin selling what you create on sites like Etsy. I have a friend that has a passion for finding sea glass that he has taken to the next step, and he’s now creating seaglass jewelry out of it. You can also go to local craft fairs to sell what you create. If you have an artistic talent that you enjoy, consider ways that you can leverage that into some extra money in your spare time.

Seasonal Yard Work

There are a lot of opportunities to do seasonal yard work for neighbors to earn a few extra bucks. Depending on the season, you can mow lawns, rake leaves, clean gutters or shovel snow (which seems quite appropriate for this article). If you are already out doing it for your own place, why not take an extra hour and do it for a neighbor as well.

Rent Out A Room

If you have an unused room, consider renting it out to earn some extra money. While there are a number of issues that you need to think carefully about and take into consideration before jumping into this option, current unused space could be a perfect option to help supercharge snowflaking your debt away.

Donate Plasma

Not only can you make some money, you help people that have a variety of diseases (often chronic, rare and serious). Plasma is a key starter material which is used for therapies that treat these conditions. For those that live in large cities, there should be a plasma clinic nearby which will pay anywhere from $25 to $50 for your plasma. Most plasma clinics allow plasma donations twice a week which would mean an extra $50 – $100 a week you could snowflake.

Sell Your Hair

There is always demand for good quality hair by wig and hair extension makers, so you may be able to sell your hair for a few bucks. Most pay somewhere in the area of $5 to $10 per ounce and require a minimum length of ten inches to sell. Hair that is thick may earn more since it weighs more. A typical hair sale will usually net the seller about $40 or so. Especially if you are looking to change your hair style (and reduce the cost of all the hair products you use for your long hair) it’s another way to add a snowflake toward your debt.

Donate Sperm

It’s possible for men to earn as much as $1,000 a month selling their sperm to sperm banks, but there is a catch. It’s not nearly as easy as it might seem and few men actually qualify to get paid for sperm donations. Not only do you need to have excellent health, you also need to be young, the correct weight, attractive, and intelligent. And that’s just the first screening process. To ultimately qualify, you need to be able to produce double the amount of sperm the average guy does and it must be “super-sperm” — sperm that is stronger and able to travel faster than normal sperm. But for those that do qualify (and are OK with the moral and ethical issues involved), it’s another option of earning money.

Sell Eggs

No, not become a farmer. Just as men can make money selling their sperm, women may be able to make money selling their eggs for a lot more money — as much as five figures. There is a very good reason for this high price. Not only do women egg donors need to be attractive, athletic, intelligent, and young (generally college age) like the men, they must also agree to a lot more invasive procedures. This can include such things as hormone injections and the eggs being harvested under anesthesia. While this certainly isn’t for most people, those who qualify and are willing would be able to add a snow avalanche to their debt snowball.

Redeem Container Deposits

If you live in a state that charges a deposit for all beverage containers when purchased at the store, collecting these cans and bottles can be a great way to snowflake. It’s simply a matter of figuring out the places where these cans and bottles are often thrown away (think events where a lot of people gather) and collecting the money. For those that don’t want to go out of their way, even picking these up on your daily route can add a few dollars a month.

Collect Game Pieces

Many large companies and restaurants have periodic games where patrons can win cash and prizes. When those games are live, many people are willing to purchase game pieces or codes that you can find for free in the trash. For example, Coke Rewards have codes on caps, and you can find many of these abandoned at large events (combine this with redeeming container deposits and it is a double win). You can keep the caps yourself to earn points for gift cards that you can sell or you can sell the caps to others collecting points online.

Help the Elderly

As the nation grows older, many people need help doing a variety of activities, often simple ones that you are already doing. For example, maybe you take a weekly trip the the farmers market and some elderly people would be interested in having you pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables for them while you are there. Maybe they need a ride to a certain destination or appointment that’s not out of your way. Helping out others doing the things that you already do can add a few dollars toward the snowflake.

Sell Gift Cards

You probably have a few gift cards that you received over the holidays that you aren’t going to be using (or for a store where you don’t have anything you really want). If this is the case, sell the gift cards. There are a number of websites that specialize in buying, selling and trading gift cards and you can always do so on Craigslist or eBay as well.

Trash Trawl

People throw away a lot of things, and often times the things that they throw away have value. If you’re willing to trash trawl or dumpster dive, there is a good chance that you can find some stuff that you will be able to sell for money that you can put toward snowflaking. Remember that doing this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to actually climb into garbage bins. Often people will leave perfectly usable items on their curb for people to take for free.

Bank Account Offers

Keep an eye out for both online and offline bank account offers. The new toaster for opening a bank account in the 1950s has become a cash bonus today. Keep an eye open for these cash offers and take advantage of them when it makes sense.

Advertise on Your Car

While car wraps, where you could get a company to pay you hundreds of dollars a month to have your car wrapped in their advertising, are long gone, a new system of advertising has started to take place. With the inexpensive cost of door magnet advertising, it makes it cost effective for small local business to advertise on cars. If you know someone with a local business, ask them if they would be willing to pay you a small amount to place their advertisements on your car. It could be a win-win deal for the two of you.

Test Drive Cars

Car dealerships will sometimes offer gift cards or other items of value for free to get you into their showroom and have you take a test drive. There will certainly be a strong sales pitch, but if you know you can resist it, then it can be an easy way to earn a few extra dollars (especially if you enjoy driving cars). Just be sure that you don’t end up buying the car as doing so will completely ruin your debt snowflake plan.

Find Unclaimed Property

When bank accounts and other financial instruments go dormant and the owner can’t be located, the assets get turned over to the state. The state tries to locate the rightful owner and part of the process is having the information on the Internet. You can input your name and past addresses to see if you have any unclaimed assets out there that you didn’t know about or may have forgotten about. The first time I searched my name for unclaimed money, I found an old bank account from college with $200 in it I had forgotten about.

Garden Sitter

When people go on vacation for short periods of time, they may not need a full time house sitter, but someone to come by and pick up any mail/newspapers and water plants. This can be an easy way to make a few extra dollars. For those with a bit of flexibility, pet sitting and house sitting can bring in even more money.

Hobby

Anyone that has a hobby that is draining resources should spend some time trying to figure out a way to turn the hobby into a money maker. Hobbyists have the unique advantage of knowing what they would like to make their hobby more enjoyable, and chances are that other hobbyists would also want the same thing. By being able to provide that service or product, you can turn what was once a drain on your finances into something that helps you pay down debt.

Clean Storage Sheds

I had a friend in college who use to spend his weekends cleaning out storage sheds and other areas where junk had piled up. He charged a minimum amount as long as he could keep whatever he wanted from what he found inside, or more if he couldn’t. He found that most of the time he came out far ahead when he could keep stuff to resell, but in either case, he always made a bit of money doing a bit of dirty work that others didn’t want to do. This concept applies to all chores that need to be done around the house.

Garage Sale

Chances are that you have a lot of stuff that is sitting in the back of you closet, in the basement of your house, or in other storage areas that you never use. Snowflaking gives you the perfect opportunity to get rid of all this stuff that you never use to help reduce your debt (or find your emergency fund and recover your sanity). Clear out the storage areas of anything that you haven’t used in the past year and sell it at a garage or yard sale. If you happen to live in an area where garage sales don’t do well, consider renting a spot at your local flea market.

Sell Online

While you are cleaning out your closets for the garage sale, there is a chance that you will come across a thing or two that has more value or is a collectible. In this case, it makes sense to sell the item on eBay or Craigslist where there will be a larger audience that will appreciate it and allow you to get more for it.

Pawn

Another option to the garage sale and online selling is to take some of the things that you no longer need to your local pawn shop. This is a good place to take scrap gold or jewelry as you will get a better price than you will get from most other gold buying places. It’s certainly not where you want to take all of your items, but there may be a select few that will get a better price there than from other venues.

Return Unused Items

If you have purchased things that you have never taken out of the box and still have the receipt, take them back to the store and get a refund. While all store refund policies are different, if it’s something that hasn’t been used, it’s better to try and get your money back than let is sit unused in the box. If the store won’t take it back, add it to your garage sale or online pile of stuff to sell.

Commute Helper

While I don’t expect that anyone reading this will actually do this to make money, I wanted to include it at the end to once again emphasize what a bit of creative thinking can do when brainstorming how you can make a little extra money. When the economy was better, there was a guy that used to get paid (and paid well) to sit in people’s cars so they could use the fast commute lane on their way to and from work.

Lots Of Ways To Debt Snowflake

This is just a list of a few of the many possible ways you can make a few extra dollars here and there in your spare time after work so that you can add a few snowflakes to that snowball that you are already starting to roll.
