Shubman Gill wins the Player of the Match for his brilliant knock of 85 runs from 92 balls. He starts by saying that it was a very special knock since it was his first fifty of the tour. Shares that it was a pretty good wicket to bat on. Adds that the wicket got tougher to bat as the ball got old. Reckons that as an opener, it is about assessing the conditions as early as possible. Feels that it is important to keep putting pressure on the opposition in the ODI format. Ends by saying that he tries to play his own game and does not think of external factors.

Earlier in the match, after being put to bat. Indian batters came out and meant only business from the get go. Despite Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma being rested for this match, it was the opening pair of Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill that set the tone for the visitors. In total, 4 batters got to their half-centuries, a few stuck for long after that, while a few slipped out soon after getting 50 runs. Nevertheless, one of them was the stand-in skipper, Hardik Pandya, who took the matter into his own hands at the very end, and made sure to take his side to a gigantic total. During the chase, Indian bowlers did not give the batters any sniff and took the game away from them quite comfortably.

This is what an Indian side is capable of. It was a dominating performance by the Indian bowlers from the get go. At first, it is Mukesh Kumar who set the tone with his incredible new ball bowling. The bolwer who made his debut in this series, certainly kept things tight and broke the back bone of this batting line up. He picked up three wickets inside the first Powerplay. Then, Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav did what they did best, and kept picking wickets at will. At one point, they had the opposition teetering at 88-8, but that 9th wicket-stand delayed the win for the visitors. That’s when ‘Lord Thakur’ put his hand up and broke this stand and soon got the final wicket to complete his four-wicket haul.

To be honest, it was a sorry outing for the hosts especially with the bat in hand. No one could really put their hand up in the top order, it was mostly a one man show by Alick Athanaze who racked up some crucial runs from the top-order department. No other batter could really do anything with the bat which made it more difficult for the hosts to get near this huge target. It was the 9th wicket stand of 55 runs that stood out for the hosts, but they eventually bundled out only for 151 runs, which is not even the half of what India scored.

An emphatic win for India. They have won the final match of this ODI series and with this win, they even seal the series. The match was certainly over a long time back, but a gritty stand between Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie meant that West Indies do not lose by an embarrassing margin here, nevertheless, they will be gutted with their performance in the final outing.

UPDATE – 10.42 pm IST (5.12 pm GMT) – Oops! It has started to rain again! The trend of a wicket bringing about rain has continued even in the ODI series. The ground staff rush in with the covers and have now covered the entire square. The rain has come at the wrong time for the West Indies who were into India’s tail and were just two wickets away from bowling them out. Just as we type, the rain has subsided and the ground staff have removed the covers as well. Stick around as resumption is not far away.

Drinks Break! India find themselves in a lot of trouble at 167-7. The onus is on Shardul Thakur to bat with the tail and take the visitors to a respectable total on what is a tough wicket to bat on. On the other hand, West Indies have done an exceptional job with the ball but the job is not yet over. They cannot afford to be complacent and need to wrap the innings as quickly as possible. Players took unpaid leave and played on unsafe pitches en route to World Cup, report finds

The global players’ union FIFPro has called on FIFA and its six member confederations to drastically improve the conditions, compensation and medical care for all players competing in future Women’s World Cup qualifiers after a new report found myriad problems with the path towards the 2023 tournament.

Compiled over a two-year period, the inaugural report surveyed 362 players who took part in World Cup qualifiers, focusing on both the global perspective as well as the specific contexts of each confederation: the OFC (Oceania), AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), UEFA (Europe), CONMEBOL (South America), and CONCACAF (North & Central America and the Caribbean).

Through anonymised online and in-person surveys, they were asked about various aspects of their experiences including travel and accommodation, pre-tournament health checks, pitch quality, recovery facilities, food, mental health support, match scheduling and payment.

The report found various qualifying paths fell short of minimum standards in many categories, with “multiple inconsistencies in the scheduling, duration, format and conditions between tournaments”. 

Sixty-six per cent of respondents said they had to take unpaid leave from other jobs in order to participate in their respective confederation competitions, which also double as qualifying pathways for World Cups and Olympic Games, with almost one-third saying they had not been paid to play at all.

Only 40 per cent of those surveyed said they viewed themselves as “professional” players, defined by FIFA as anyone who has a written contract with a club and is paid more for football than the expenses they incur.

Thirty-five per cent of players identified as amateur, 16 per cent as semi-professional, while nine were uncertain of their status.

In every confederation, match payment and prize money were two of the biggest issues of the qualifying phases, with the vast majority of respondents saying payment needed significant improvement.

Last week, players from the World Cup-bound Jamaican women’s national team posted public statements saying a lack of investment had led to abandoned camps and missed compensation.

“We are not financially supported enough,” said an anonymous UEFA player.

“Some of our girls had to take unpaid vacation at work and it wasn’t sure if they can even attend the tournament.”

Over half the players surveyed were not provided with pre-tournament medical checks, while 70 per cent were not given ECG heart-health checks.

“Any stat that is below 100 per cent in terms of access to important medical checks is completely unacceptable,” said Sarah Gregorious, director of global policy and strategic relations for women’s football at FIFPro.

“We just want to work with whoever wants to work with us, particularly FIFA and the confederations, to understand why that is the case and how that can be prevented, because that is certainly not something that should be acceptable to anybody.”

Almost 40 per cent of players surveyed did not have access to mental health support, while one-third of those surveyed said there was insufficient recovery time between games, which was exacerbated by the sub-standard quality of training and match pitches, particularly outside of Europe.

Sixty-six per cent said recovery and gym facilities were not of an elite standard or did not exist at all, making it more difficult to recover from games as well as from international travel, with 59 per cent saying they flew economy — even over long distances.

Another major issue highlighted was inconsistent match scheduling.

Only UEFA has a stand-alone World Cup qualifying process separate from their continental championship, which affords players more high-quality matches and opportunities for remuneration, while the other five confederations rely on a single tournament for multiple purposes.

Some of those tournaments — like the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, in which Australia participates — are shorter in length (the 2022 tournament ran for just 18 days), and also operate outside designated FIFA windows, forcing players to choose between playing for club or country, with the tight turn-around between games also heightening risk of injury and fatigue.

One-third of players said they did not have enough recovery time between matches, with 34 per cent saying that had one rest day or fewer between arriving in camp and playing a qualifying match. Further, 39 per cent said they had one day or fewer between the end of the international window and resuming training at their clubs.

FIFPro has used the report to call on FIFA to have greater control and oversight over World Cup qualifying pathways, highlighting the need to implement global standards for player conditions in international tournaments, as well as for each confederation to conduct stand-alone qualifying tournaments outside of their continental championships.

The lack of domestic player unions in many federations — particularly those from less privileged confederations such as Oceania and Africa — had made organising and collective bargaining difficult, but ABC understands one suggestion is to establish a confederation-wide union membership system so that players can still be protected even if they don’t have their own country-specific union.

Right then, 270 runs needed for India to win and seal the series. The target is not a big one considering the pitch conditions and spin might not even play a big role during the chase but the batting has let India down so far which gives Australia more than half a chance to get the win. The Aussies started off with flying colors but Hardik Pandya changed the momentum and shifted that in favor of India. The hosts controlled the middle phase as well with the spinners bossing play. For India, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav were their best bowlers as they scalped 3 wickets each. They were well supported by Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj who took a couple of wickets each and overall, India will be pretty content with that effort.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Aussies started off sensationally as the two openers came out with a positive mindset and scored at a blistering pace. The duo of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head scored 68 for the first wicket but the middle order failed to capitalize on a brilliant platform laid by the openers. The introduction of Hardik Pandya into the attack helped the hosts as he changed the game by scalping 3 wickets in quick succession. The lower middle order along with the tail then scored some crucial runs and helped the Aussies to post a total they could fight for. Most of the Aussie batters did get starts but no one could step up and convert that into a big one.

A good fightback from India after a difficult start right at the top restricts Australia to a total of 269 runs for the loss of 10 wickets. Inspired bowling changes and a clinical fielding performance helps India to restrict the Aussies for not too many on the board in this series decider.

That was, without doubt, one of the best halves of football the Matildas have played under Tony Gustavsson.

Almost from the opening whistle, they were intense, organised, and direct in their attacking moves. They know exactly where Spain’s weak-points are, and have been pressing and pushing and prodding them all half.

Spain have had a handful of decent chances, though, mostly coming from delightful little through-balls that carved open Australia’s back-line. You have to wonder whether a more experienced starting line-up would have made that opening 45 a much more even contest.

Daryl Mitchell (59* off 30 balls) is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. Mitchell says that it’s always nice to contribute to a score and hopes that they take a bit of momentum into the rest of the series. Says that spin was difficult to get away and applauds the partnership between Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips that got them back into the game and it was his job to take the bowlers on in the end. Adds that it’s about trusting his skills and staying clear and it doesn’t always come off in T20 cricket but that’s the nature of the game.

Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand says that it was a bit of a shock for everyone to see how the ball spun in the second innings. Adds that after a lot of runs in the ODIs, it was nice to see the ball spin. Tells that they never felt safe at any point and knew they needed to bowl well. Mentions that taking three wickets in the Powerplay set the tone for them. Says that they thought about bowling first at the toss because of the dew but the condition never got worse. Ends by saying it was nice to start the series with a win.

The Indian skipper, Hardik Pandya says that no one even thought that the wicket would play like that and the opposition played a bit better than them. Adds that the new ball was turning more than the old ball and the bounce was a surprising factor as well but they did pull it back with the bat and Washington Sundar played really well. Mentions that the wicket wasn’t a 176-run wicket and they did falter with the ball having conceded 20-25 runs extra but also recognizes that this is a young team and hopes that they will learn from this. Adds that Sundar was phenomenal and the way he batted and bowled, it is a big plus for them.

The Presentation ceremony…

Michael Bracewell comes down for a quick chat. He says that they were surprised with the amount of turn that was there and says that they were happy that they bowled second. Adds that for his first wicket, he just wanted to skid the ball and it worked out in the end. Mentions that Santner as a leader is great and he oozes confidence which helps the team. Tells that there was a bit of moisture in the end and the dew wasn’t a factor. Says that it was a disappointing ODI series, but to bounce back like this is nice for them and they look to continue the momentum.

Earlier in the game, Hardik Pandya won the toss and put New Zealand into bat first due to the dew factor and the Indian pacers didn’t get off to a good start either. Finn Allen took them on but Washington Sundar was able to get rid of him early and after that the Indian spinners dominated play. Devon Conway though kept playing his shots and was well-supported by Daryl Mitchell at the other end. Conway got to fifty and then got out but a barrage of boundaries in the final over from Mitchell took New Zealand to a more than a defendable score of 176. Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav bowled really well but the pacers were taken to the cleaners. Coming to the chase, it was a similar story as the Kiwi spinners bossed proceedings but were able to break partnerships more frequently. Their skipper, Mitchell Santner led from the front with the ball and ensured that they got their first win of the tour.

Needing 177 for victory, India got off to a woeful start as their top three were bundled out with the score being just 15. Then came the repair work by the captain and vice-captain as Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav added on 68 runs. SKY looked well in control before chipping one straight to long on and fell short of his fifty. Pandya followed suit and it was Washington Sundar who showed a lot of class as he took on the Kiwi pacers and ripped them apart at the death before eventually falling for 50 in the final over. It was a bridge a bit too far once Yadav and Pandya fell and India will now look to bounce back in the next game.

Having set an above-par total, the Kiwis had the momentum coming into the chase with that 27-run final over. Their spinners came out all guns blazing and picked up early wickets to set the tone. After being kept at bay by Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya for a while, Ish Sodhi broke the vital stand by getting rid of Yadav and that opened the floodgates. They were able to get rid of Pandya soon and run a rampage through the lower order before facing stiff resistance from Washington Sundar in the death overs. In the end, the runs on the board and the spinners took them over the line.

A pretty solid win in the end for New Zealand and they have bounced back after the hammering in the ODI series to take the lead in the T20I series. India will be disappointed with their overall effort as they were outplayed in every department.
