19.5 overs (1 Run) 1 run.

19.4 overs (1 Run) Comes from around the wicket now and bows it full around off, Jason Behrendorff stays deep and looks to heave it away but gets it off the inner half of the bat to mid-wicket. Just the single then.

Jason Behrendorff is the next man in. He needs to get a boundary here to release some pressure.

19.3 overs (0 Run) OUT! CAUGHT! Straight to the man and India now have one foot over the line here. Arshdeep Singh serves it full again on off stump, a bit in the slot and Matthew Wade decides to sweep this one over the long on fence. Wade can’t get under it and ends up hitting it down the throat of Shreyas Iyer at the long on fence. Iyer makes no mistake and Wade walks back still thinking about that wide call. 10 needed off 3 balls now.

19.2 overs (0 Run) Arshdeep Singh holding his nerve here as he nails the perfect yorker around off stump. Matthew Wade can’t get under it and can only jam it out back on the deck.

19.1 overs (0 Run) Nails the bumper does Arshdeep Singh, around off and at over 137 clicks, zipping off the deck. Matthew Wade tries to take it on and misses but is livid about not getting the wide call for height. The replays do show that it was over head height.

Can Arshdeep Singh defend 9 runs here? He has conceded 37 runs in his three overs.

18.6 overs (0 Run) Ends with a dot does Mukesh Kumar! Full and in the blockhole on middle and leg, Nathan Ellis digs it out to long on but Matthew Wade understandably denies the single. 10 needed off the final over now.

18.5 overs (1 Run) Full again on middle and leg, this is flicked away to deep mid-wicket for just a single.

18.4 overs (0 Run) Trying to be a bit too cheeky there Matthew Wade. Goes full and straight again and nails it, Wade looks to get inside the line and scoop it away but gets it off the toe end and the ball goes nowhere.

18.3 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Smashed away through the off side! Full and outside off, a bit in the slot, Matthew Wade stays deep in his crease, reaches out and hammers it through covers for a boundary. 11 needed now off 9 balls.

18.2 overs (1 Run) Full and straight, in the blockhole, Nathan Ellis jams it down to long on and turns the strike over.

18.1 overs (1 Run) A valiant effort in the deep from Ruturaj Gaikwad but Matthew Wade survives. A juicy full toss on leg stump, Wade gets down on one knee and looks to slog it over deep backward square leg but mistimes it badly. The ball goes high up and Gaikwad comes steaming in and even puts in the dive but is just unable to reach it. A single is taken.

17.6 overs (2 Runs) A couple of more runs to end the over and 15 come off it! Banged in a bit short around off, Nathan Ellis backs away and pulls it in the gap at mid-wicket and hustles back for two as well. 17 needed then off the last 12 deliveries.

17.5 overs (1 Run) Goes back to bowling over the wicket and serves a slower one into the pitch, Matthew Wade stays on the back foot and turns it onto the leg side for one.

17.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Three boundaries in a row and Matthew Wade is leading the fightback brilliantly. Avesh Khan misses his mark with the wide yorker and serves a juicy full toss, Wade slaps this one flat and through the cover region for another boundary.

17.3 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Powered away by Matthew Wade and Avesh Khan is under pressure here. Just a fraction short around off and angled in, Wade gets across a touch and muscles it away into the deep mid-wicket fence for four more.

17.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Streaky but will do! Avesh Khan sees Matthew Wade pre-meditating the scoop and goes full and wide around the tramline. Wade adjusts well and cue ends it down to third man for a boundary.

17.1 overs (0 Run) Bowls it from around the stumps and on a hard length in the channel, Matthew Wade looks to stay back and cut but is beaten on the outside edge.

16.6 overs (0 Run) Another dot to end and Australia now need 32 to win off 18 balls! Hard length again from Mukesh and around off, Nathan Ellis tentatively defends it down on the off side.

16.5 overs (0 Run) No hat-trick! Serves this one a fraction short and wide, nipping away as well. Nathan Ellis stays put and looks to slap it away but the ball zips past the outside edge. Suryakumar Yadav has a chat about going for the review but rightly decides against it.

Nathan Ellis to face the hat-trick ball.

16.4 overs (0 Run) OUT! TIMBER! Mukesh Kumar goes bang, bang! Peach of a delivery from Mukesh as he bowls it on a hard length on middle and leg. The ball skids on and Ben Dwarshuis is caught on the back foot. Dwarshuis tries to block but the ball goes through the gap between bat and pad and castles into the stumps. Mukesh Kumar on a hat-trick now and the crowd is going wild!

Ben Dwarshuis walks out to bat now.

16.3 overs (0 Run) OUT! TAKEN! Mukesh Kumar comes back strongly and picks up another timely wicket for India. Another low full toss, this time outside off and there to be put away. Matthew Short hangs deep and looks to hammer it down the ground but ends up slicing it flat to the left of point where Ruturaj Gaikwad dives it and takes an excellent low catch. Australia lose another wicket to a pretty average delivery and India slowly taking command of this game.

16.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! That has been nailed! Way too full, a low full toss in fact on middle, Matthew Short keeps the front leg out of the way and smashes it through the line and straight down the ground for aboundary.

16.1 overs (1 Run) Hits the hard length and angles it across the left-hander, a bit of an extra bounce but Matthew Wade does well to play it away square through the off side for a single.

15.6 overs (2 Runs) Goes full and gets it in the blockhole on off, Matthew Short gets a good chunk of the bat on it and hits it away in front of deep cover-point for a couple of runs. 37 needed now off 24 balls.

15.5 overs (1 Run) Short ball at the body, this one hurries onto the batter but Matthew Wade manages to pull it down to fine leg for a single.

15.4 overs (1 Run) This is bowled on a hard length again over middle, Matthew Short pushes it down on the off side and gets across for a run.

15.3 overs (1 Run) Oh, sloppy work in the field! Comes from around the wicket and serves it on a hard length around off, Matthew Wade jams it off the outside edge in front of covers. Rinku Singh there picks up the ball and fires in an unnecessary throw at the bowler’s end and gives away and extra run.

15.2 overs (1 Run) Another slower one, bowled into the pitch and outside off, this is pulled down to deep mid-wicket for only a single.

15.1 overs (2 Runs) Banged into the pitch, a slower one and bowled outside off, Matthew Short fetches and pulls it away through mid-wicket for a couple of runs.

0.6 over (1 Run) NOT OUT! Aaron Hardie bowls another quick one and on the hard length in line with middle and off. Yashasvi Jaiswal tries to play it across the line but is beaten and hit on the pads. A loud appeal which is turned down by the umpire. The Aussies have reviewed it. No spike on the Ultra Edge. The ball tracking confirms that the ball is pitching outside leg stump. Yashasvi Jaiswal survives but a brilliant over by Aaron Hardie.

A huge appeal for LBW but it is turned down. The bowler, Aaron Hardie seems very confident and skipper Matthew Wade does opt for the review. Nothing on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking shows that the ball is pitching outside leg. NOT OUT comes up on the big screen!

0.1 over (0 Run) Beauty! Aaron Hardie goes full just shaping on the inside. Yashasvi Jaiswal swings hard but is beaten by the swing. Good start by Hardie.

We are all set for the match to begin! The umpires are now out in the middle and the players of Australia are taking their places on the field. The Indian opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad also stride out to the middle. Aaron Hardie has been surprisingly handed the new ball and he is raring to go. Let’s play…

PITCH REPORT – Murali Kartik is pitchside. He is joined by Matthew Hayden who starts by saying that one needs to know how much is enough and the wicket is nice and hard with a layer of grass on it. Adds that the ground dimensions are 74 meters uniformly but still it is a solid wicket and dew will play a role. Kartik adds the dew will intensify at around 8 pm IST.

The Indian skipper, Suryakumar Yadav says they would have loved to bowl first but he doesn’t mind batting first. Says the wicket looks good and it is the first T20I being played here so he is excited. Informs that they have four changes in total.

Matthew Wade, the captain of Australia says that he will bowl first. Mentions that there are five changes in the squad due to the players going back to Australia. He adds that the selectors and the coaching staff helped him a lot in this series and ends by saying he looks forward to this match.

Australia (Playing XI) – Josh Philippe (In for Glenn Maxwell), Travis Head, Ben McDermott (In for Josh Inglis), Aaron Hardie, Tim David, Matthew Short (In for Marcus Stoinis), Matthew Wade (C/WK), Ben Dwarshuis (In for Kane Richardson), Chris Green (On debut) (In for Nathan Ellis), Jason Behrendorff, Tanveer Sangha.

India (Playing XI) – Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer (In for Ishan Kishan), Suryakumar Yadav (C), Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (In for Tilak Varma) (WK), Axar Patel, Deepak Chahar (In for Arshdeep Singh), Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar (In for Prasidh Krishna).

TOSS – Australia have won the toss and have elected to BOWL first.

Australia too have a new-look side, yet again, as Maxwell, Inglis and Stoinis have flown home and the likes of Ben McDermott, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Philippe and Chris Green have been included in the squad. They have a bit of momentum with the win in the previous game but given the chopping and changing of the playing XI, we have seen some patchy cricket from the Aussies. However, Jason Behrendorff has stood head and shoulders above the rest and his bowling will once again be key for the touring side. Can Australia level the series? Or will the inexperience of not playing in sub-continental conditions cost them dearly? We shall find out. Toss and team news in a bit.

India have had a couple of additions to the side with the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar coming in and Mukesh Kumar also returning to the side after his marriage. But whether they come straight into the playing XI remains to be seen and if so, who does India bench? The batting, in general, has fired and they have put more than 200 runs on the board in all the previous three games. The key for Suryakumar Yadav and co will be to tighten up the bowling a bit and get that series-clinching third win.

Hello and a warm welcome to one and all! We are in Raipur for the fourth T20I between India and Australia. The hosts currently lead the five-match series 2-1, but the Aussies pulled off a remarkable run chase in the previous game thanks to some Glenn Maxwell magic and will look to convert the momentum into a series-levelling win.

1.4 overs (1 Run) Takes pace off and bowls it around the top of off, Ruturaj Gaikwad stays watchful and dabs it down toward backward point for one.

1.3 overs (1 Run) WIDE! On a good length and on the pads, just drifting down leg, Gaikwad misses the tickle and a wide is called.

1.2 overs (1 Run) Uppish but safe! Pitched up again around off, Yashasvi Jaiswal looks to drive on the up but the ball holds a bit and Jaiswal gets it off the inner half again to the left of the bowler. The ball eludes the diving bowler and Jaiswal picks up a quick single to mid on.

1.1 overs (0 Run) Starts from over the wicket and pitches it up around off, a bit in the slot, Yashasvi Jaiswal throws his hands at it but mistimes it off the inner half of the bat.

Nathan Ellis to operate from the other end.

0.6 over (2 Runs) On a hard length again and angled into the body, again its the indifferent bounce that troubles the batter and Ruturaj Gaikwad misses the pull. The ball goes off the thigh pad down to fine leg and they pick up a couple of leg byes. 10 off the first over, a good start for India.

0.5 over (1 Run) A touch shorter over middle, Yashasvi Jaiswal awkwardly pulls it away behind square leg and picks up a single.

0.5 over (1 Run) WIDE! An attempted slower one, full and spilled way down the leg side for a wide.

0.4 over (1 Run) Hits the deck hard and angles it at the body, Ruturaj Gaikwad doesn’t quite move his feet and goes after the pull, miscuing it down to deep square leg for a run.

0.3 over (4 Runs) FOUR! Ruturaj Gaikwad is off the mark in fine fashion! Serves this one full around off, floated up and gets it to shape away. Gaikwad gets on the front foot and just leans on before caressing it through covers for a boundary.

0.2 over (1 Run) Yashasvi Jaiswal and India are off the mark! Bowls it back of a length this time over middle, Jaiswal bends his back a bit and steers it down to third man for a single.

0.1 over (0 Run) Starts off with a with a pitched-up delivery on middle, gets this one to swing back in nicely. Yashasvi Jaiswal gets his front leg out of the way and whips it straight to mid on.

We are all set for the match to begin! The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of Australia. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad are the two openers for India. Marcus Stoinis has been handed the new ball and is raring to go. Let’s play…

The Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav says that they were also looking to bowl first and with the amount of dew there has been here, it was the sensible decision. Adds that the way the boys turned up with the bat after conceding 200 plus runs was nice to see and will look to continue the same. On his captaincy, he says that he is starting to get a hang of it and ends by informing that they are going with the same eleven.

Matthew Wade, the captain of Australia says they are going to bowl. Adds that they expect dew to come later and the wicket should be good. Mentions it’s about looking at the conditions and doing accordingly. He reckons, Australia did well in the last game but India were tidy in some areas. He informs that almost everyone’s available with Adam Zampa coming in for Jason Behrendorrf and Glenn Maxwell coming in for Aaron Hardie.

Australia (Playing XI) – Steven Smith, Matthew Short, Josh Inglis, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell (In for Aaron Hardie), Tim David, Matthew Wade (C/WK), Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Tanveer Sangha, Adam Zampa (In for Jason Behrendorff).

India (Unchanged Playing XI) – Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (WK), Suryakumar Yadav (C), Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, and Prasidh Krishna.

TOSS – Australia win the toss and they will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT – Murali Kartik is pitchside. He says that only three T20 games prior to this have been played here, so, the sample size is small. Matthew Hayden joins him and says in an international game there’s always pressure and the average score is 139 but reckons the pitch looks good and might turn and bounce and there will be more runs. Kartik adds that it is dry and hard and mentions that there will be dew in the game, so, the captain winning the toss will look to chase.

Australia too had a new-look side for this series but had some experienced names in the squad. Matthew Wade donned the captain’s armband but it was former skipper Steven Smith who picked up a stellar fifty before Josh Inglis simply put the Indian bowlers to the sword and raced away to an amazing ton which helped the Aussies breach the 200-run mark but the inexperienced bowling line up failed to defend the target. They will hope to mend the little things and get back on level terms. Can Australia make it 1-1? Or will India cruise to a 2-0 lead? We shall find out. Toss and team news in a bit.

India came into this series with the dismay of the World Cup final behind them and a fairly young but T20-wise experienced side. The skipper, Suryakumar Yadav might not have had the best of times in the field as his bowlers conceded a lot of runs but certainly made a mark with the bat with a thunderous 80-run inning. Ishan Kishan too made a half-century and it was some heroics from Rinku Singh right at the death that sealed a 1-0 lead for the hosts.

Hello and a warm welcome to one and all! We are at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram for the 2nd T20I between India and Australia. It was a riveting start to the five-match series as the hosts won the contest on the final ball of the game which was a no ball despite a sensational ton by Josh Inglis that propelled Australia to 208. We can expect more fireworks from this contest as well.

India missed out with a 6th choice bowler. Even the inexperienced came into play. Although the pitch was paradise to bat but the bowlers were too short and too wide which gave Australia an easy run off. However, we feel that another option for Suryakumar Yadav could have made a difference. Right then! This is a really good pitch to bat on. India need to bat well though. Australia have to bowl more slower balls. Let’s see how things pan out.

A mammoth total by the Aussies who will be pretty happy at the break. It was two experienced players who ran the show. Steven Smith and Josh Inglis hammered India all over the ground. Smith was struggling to time but Josh Inglis was enjoying his time up the order. Steven Smith scored fifty while Josh Inglis scored a fantastic century before Tim David walked out to give a powerful finish.

19.6 overs (0 Run) Outstanding from Kumar. Goes full and outside off. David gets across but fumbles to play and gets hit on the pads. Dot to end. Australia end with 208 runs.

19.5 overs (0 Run) Excellent from Kumar! A yorker on off. David jams it out back to the bowler. Just superb.

19.4 overs (1 Run) JUST ONE! Too full and on middle, Stoinis plays it to long on for a single.

19.4 overs (2 Runs) A full toss, outside off. David doesn’t time it well as he hits it to deep cover. Just 3 runs till now. No, no, the siren rings. No ball is called as Mukesh Kumar has overstepped. Free-hit next.

19.3 overs (1 Run) Very full and outside off, Stoinis drives it to deep cover for a single. Good last over from Mukesh Kumar. Can he end well?

19.2 overs (1 Run) Well bowled! A yorker slanting on leg. David falls over as he digs it out to cover for a single. India think it is off the pads and takes it upstairs. It hits the boot but the ball was sliding down. Clearly not out.

19.1 overs (0 Run) David missed out there. A full toss on off, David hits it straight to covers.

Mukesh Kumar to bowl the final over.

18.6 overs (1 Run) Tim keeps the strike. Full and on off, it is hit to long off for one.

18.5 overs (6 Runs) SIX! There is a reason David was so eager for that single. 200 up for the Aussies. This is full and outside off, David smokes it over extra-cover for a biggie.

18.4 overs (1 Run) Short and outside off, Marcus Stoinis drops it to point and takes a single. David runs to the danger side and makes it with a dive.

18.3 overs (1 Run) Full and on off, this is pushed to long off for a single.

18.3 overs (1 Run) Wide! This is full and wide of off. David steps across to swing but misses. Arshdeep Singh is not happy as he feels David moved across.

18.2 overs (0 Run) Goes full and outside off, David hits it straight to cover.

18.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! powered! Length ball, outside off. David muscles it over covers and it races to the fence. Australia looking for 220 here.

18.1 overs (1 Run) Wide! Slower one but again way outside off, David leaves it for a wide.

18.1 overs (1 Run) Wide! Full and way outside off. David swings and misses.

17.6 overs (2 Runs) DROPPED! Two drop catches, a run out chance missed by Ravi Bishnoi and goes for fifty with the ball as well. Not a good day till now for him. Length and outside off, Stoinis swings and hits it over covers, not of the middle. Ravi Bishnoi runs back from infield, tries to take over his shoulder but misses.

17.5 overs (1 Run) Drops it short and on middle, David pulls off the higher part of the blade to deep square leg for one.

17.4 overs (0 Run) A slower bumper on leg, David looks to pull but misses.

17.3 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Off the mark in style. A length ball, outside off, David punches it through point and it goes to the fence.

Tim David comes in to give a powerful finish.

17.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! GONE! End of a brilliant knock from Inglis! Prasidh Krishna bowls an off-cutter, lands it on the pads. Inglis tries to go over square leg but fails to power and Yashasvi Jaiswal holds his nerves in the deep. Superb knock from Inglis.

17.1 overs (1 Run) Good run from Inglis! Outside off, this is tapped to point. Marcus Stoinis wasn’t looking for a run but Inglis calls and makes his ground easily.

16.6 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Fourth boundary of the over. India looking all over the place. This is full and outside off, Inglis carves it over point and it races to the fence. 18 runs of this one.

16.5 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Inglis won’t mind at all. He is enjoying his own show. Shorter and on middle, Inglis looks to pull but top edges it over the keeper and to fine leg.

16.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! CENTURY FOR INGLIS! A huge roar from Inglis as he reaches the landmark. His first century. Bowls it wide again, outside off, Inglis gets some bat on it and the ball rolls past third man for a boundary.

16.4 overs (1 Run) Wide! Tries to stay away from the arc but bowls it over the tramline, WIDED.

16.3 overs (0 Run) A slower length ball, outside off, Inglis swings and misses.

16.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! That is outrageous. Suryakumar Yadav is impressed as well. Full and outside off, Inglis switch-hits, plays it over short third for a boundary. Inglis is 2 runs away now for a ton.

16.1 overs (1 Run) Length ball, outside off, this is dropped to cover for a single.

Arshdeep Singh is into the attack.

15.6 overs (0 Run) A huge appeal for caught behind but nothing given. Ishan Kishan convinces Suryakumar Yadav to take it upstairs. UltraEdge shows NO SPIKE. NOT OUT. A widish yorker, outside off. Inglis looks to drive but misses. There was a spike but it was off the blade hitting the turf.

Marcus Stoinis walks to the middle.

15.5 overs (0 Run) OUT! RUN OUT! Fifty and out for Smith! This is on a length and outside off. Smith gets across and paddles it to short fine leg. Fumbles as he plays and also while running across. Prasidh Krishna was quick to pick up and throw it back to Mukesh Kumar who clips the bails off.

A run out appeal is taken upstairs…

15.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Fifty for Smith! Started slowly but is looking to end on a high note now. Length ball, outside off, Smith cuts it through point for a boundary.

15.3 overs (2 Runs) A full toss on off. Smith lofts it over to long off for a couple of runs.

15.2 overs (0 Run) Short again but this time outside off. Smith looks to pull but misses.

15.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Short, slow and on middle, Smith pulls it late behind square leg for a boundary.

We are all set for the run chase. The umpires are out on the field. The Aussies are seen in a huddle along the boundary line taking some final instructions before walking out on the field to take their respective positions.

Right then, that is it from the first innings and it was an exciting one as expected. The Aussies were off to a great start and were looking to breach the 400-run mark but a complete bowling effort by the Indians managed to restrict the Aussies to just over 350. Apart from the top 4, none of the batters could keep the momentum going and runs coming. The target for India is 353 and they have to chase it in 50 overs. Will Australia defend the target or will India pull off the highest run chase on this ground? It will be an interesting chase where all questions will be answered. So grab a cup of coffee and join us in a while for the exciting run chase.

Mitchell Marsh is in for a chat. He starts by saying that these are probably the hottest conditions he has batted in. Mentions that it is a beautiful wicket and hopes to defend the total. Shares that after assessing the conditions quickly, it was important to get as many as possible in the powerplay. Credits David Warner for the way he batted. Feels that it would have been nice to get a hundred but the kind of platform they set was the way they wanted to bat. Reckons that it was tough to bat as the ball got softer and the change of pace worked as well. Feels that we are in for an exciting chase.

The Indians started off their bowling innings really poorly and got hit all around the ground in the opening overs. Prasidh Krishna gave them the first breakthrough after dismissing Warner and giving some hope to his team. The next strong partnership was broken by the spinner Kuldeep Yadav who dismissed the dangerous-looking Marsh before he could reach his century. Not taking timely wickets in the middle phases allowed the Aussies to build strong partnerships but after Mohammed Siraj trapped Smith in front of the stumps, the wickets kept coming in regular intervals. The pressure was not completely off until Marnus Labuschagne was on the crease and the job of dismissing him was completed by the star speedster, Jasprit Bumrah. A good bowling effort towards the end by the Indians managed to keep the Aussies from reaching 400 which was looking very near from the way they were batting. The target for India now is 353 runs and it will be the highest chase on this ground.

After Australia won the toss and chose to bat first, they got off to a great start thanks to the explosive opening pair of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh. They both took apart the Indian bowling attack in the opening phases. Warner was the first batter to depart which brought in Steven Smith. He also complemented Marsh and built a strong partnership with him. They both managed to reach their half-centuries with Marsh departing when he was just short of a century. Marnus Labuschagne was the next batter in and he also batted well. Smith was dismissed after scoring 74 runs. After that none of the batters could keep the momentum going and wickets kept falling on the other end. Marnus Labuschagne was still going strong but he too fell under pressure after scoring a good 72 runs. The Aussies had to press pause on their momentum towards the end as wickets were falling quickly. At one point in the innings they were looking to cross 400 but now they have to be content with 352 on the board.

A good comeback from India towards the middle and the end of the innings. They managed to restrict the Aussies to a score of 352, thanks to a good bowling effort and the captaincy of Rohit Sharma who managed his bowlers well. Mitchell Marsh was the top scorer for Australia and Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker for the Men in Blue as he took 3 wickets. A very eventful first innings comes to an end as Australia registers the highest score on this ground.

49.6 overs (1 Run) Was that a chance? A single nonetheless for Australia to end the innings! Siraj goes short this time, a bit slower, at the batter, Pat Cummins goes for the pull but gets a top edge. The ball lobs behind the wicket where KL Rahul dives forward but fails to cling on. The ball pops out of the gloves and the batters run a single. Australia end up with 352 on the board!

49.4 overs (2 Runs) Slanting in, at the batter, on a length, Pat Cummins clears his front leg and swings across the line. Miscues his shot in front of deep backward square leg for two runs more.

49.3 overs (1 Run) Pulls his length back a bit and serves it on off, Mitchell Starc looks to turn it on the leg side. Gets an inside edge onto his pads and the ball drops on the off side for a single.

49.2 overs (0 Run) Angling away, on a good length, outside off, Mitchell Starc hangs back and drills it straight back to the bowler.

49.1 overs (1 Run) Low full toss, at the stumps, Pat Cummins swats it to deep backward square leg and takes a single.

Mitchell Starc is the new batter in.

48.6 overs (0 Run) OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Jasprit Bumrah gets his reward for some smart bowling! Keeps it on a length, near the tramline on off, slower as well, Marnus Labuschagne moves across to the off side and swings through the line to go down the ground. He has to generate pace and ends up holding out to Shreyas Iyer at long on who does the rest. Marnus Labuschagne would have wanted to bat through but has done his job.

48.5 overs (2 Runs) Yet another off pace delivery, outside off, Marnus Labuschagne shuffles in the crease and lofts it over extra cover for a couple of runs more.

48.4 overs (0 Run) Excellent! Another slower delivery, fuller in length, Marnus Labuschagne stays leg side of the ball and tries to carve it on the off side but misses.

48.3 overs (1 Run) Keeps it away from the batter again, slower delivery and on a length, outside off, Pat Cummins toe-ends his shot towards extra cover and runs a single.

48.2 overs (1 Run) Loopy delivery, low full toss, outside off, Marnus Labuschagne slices it wide of extra cover and takes a single.

48.1 overs (0 Run) Takes pace off again and bowls it on a length, on the tramline on off, Marnus Labuschagne walks across to paddle it away but misses.

48.1 overs (1 Run) WIDE! Serves a slower delivery, full and near the tramline on off, Marnus Labuschagne reaches out to go through the off side. The umpire deems it was beyond the tramline and signals a wide.

47.6 overs (0 Run) On a yorker length, on middle, Pat Cummins digs it out back to the bowler.

47.4 overs (0 Run) On off and middle, on a length, Marnus Labuschagne tries to go down the ground but mistimes his shot towards mid off.

47.3 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Crunched! Continues to bowl on length, outside off, Marnus Labuschagne backs away and slaps it past extra cover for a boundary.

47.2 overs (1 Run) Angling in, on a length, on middle and leg, Pat Cummins slogs it towards deep mid-wicket where Virat Kohli swoops in and keeps it to a single.

47.1 overs (0 Run) Slower delivery, on a length, over middle and leg, Pat Cummins goes for a heave across the line but connects with thin air. KL Rahul dives to his left and prevents any runs.

46.6 overs (1 Run) Low full toss, on leg, Pat Cummins clips it through mid-wicket and keeps the strike with a single.

46.5 overs (1 Run) Fullish delivery again, slower this time, on off, Marnus Labuschagne eases it in front of backward point and sets off for a quick single. Ravindra Jadeja hurls a wayward throw at the non-striker’s end but it is backed up well.

46.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Excellent placement! Bumrah hurls it at the toes, on a fullish length, Marnus Labuschagne flicks it sweetly and gets it in the gap towards deep backward square leg. Virat Kohli at deep square leg, sprints and puts in a dive to his right but in vain. IND vs AUS: 3rd ODI: Marnus Labuschagne hits Jasprit Bumrah for a 4! AUS 332/6 (46.4 Ov). CRR: 7.11

46.3 overs (0 Run) At the stumps, on a length, Marnus Labuschagne makes room and swats it straight to mid-wicket. Kuldeep Yadav has a shy at the non-striker’s end but does not hit. Would not have mattered anyway as Pat Cummins was in.

46.2 overs (1 Run) Executes the yorker again, on middle and leg, Pat Cummins knocks it to the right of Jasprit Bumrah and takes a single.

46.1 overs (1 Run) Bowls a slower bouncer, on off, Marnus Labuschagne rises and ramps it down to third man for a single.

45.6 overs (1 Run) Full again and slanting in, on leg, Marnus Labuschagne flicks it through square leg and retains the strike with a single.

45.5 overs (2 Runs) Buzzers! Fullish delivery, at the stumps, Marnus Labuschagne clips it off his toes but straight to mid-wicket. The fielder hits the stumps at the non-striker’s end and the ball deflects towards long off, allowing the batters to run two.

Right then, that’s all from this game. India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series and will eye a whitewash now. The third and final ODI of the series will take place on Wednesday, the 27th of September, at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. The first ball will be bowled at 1.30 pm IST (8.00 am GMT), but you can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, goodbye and take care!

Shreyas Iyer is the Player of the Match for his brilliant hundred. Says that it was a rollercoaster ride for the last few months but he is feeling good now and credits his friends and family for supporting him in such a tough phase. Adds that he watched the games from his home and just wanted to go out there to perform. Tells that he always believed in his own abilities and he is really happy that everything worked out in this game. Mentions that his plan initially was to play in the V and not complicate things as he was batting brilliantly in the nets, and he backed himself to put away the loose balls as well. Says that he is happy to bat in any spot, whatever the team needs. Further adds that Virat Kohli is one of the best in the game, and he can’t steal that number 3 position from him but there is a lot to learn. Ends by saying he wants to keep the momentum going and maintain the same rhythm.

India’s skipper KL Rahul says that when he saw the wicket in the morning, he did not think it would spin that much. Mentions that having quality spinners in the side does help. Adds that having 400 on the board also helped. Feels that selection is a headache for the coach and Rohit Sharma and whoever gets picked has a job to do. Shares that sitting out can be hard despite scoring runs. Reckons that when you travel every day, it is important to get used to lights. Adds that fielding is related to how fresh you are.

Steven Smith, the captain of Australia says that potentially they could have batted first looking at how the ball was turning later in the game. Praises Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer for their excellent hundreds and also credits KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav for their contributions with the bat. Tells that they like to chase but after the rain, the wicket got a bit sticky and started to spin and it was always going to be challenging chasing 400 but they were a good way off. Mentions that they have now lost a few games, in South Africa and now here and you don’t really want to be going to a big event like this. Says that there are a few things to sort out and once they get there, they know they will be a better side. Further adds that he doesn’t know if they will experiment again but hopes to come back stronger in the next game. Ends by saying that both teams are preparing for the World Cup and India have outplayed them in both games here.

Time for the presentation ceremony…

Earlier in the game, it was Australia’s stand-in skipper Steven Smith who called it right and inserted India into bat. Returning to the side, Josh Hazelwood drew first blood for Australia by getting rid of Ruturaj Gaikwad in his second over. Coming in at number 3, Shreyas Iyer came out all guns firing and was quick to put the pressure back on the Aussie bowlers. Shubman Gill continued his purple patch and got India off to a flying start with Iyer. Both batters notched up entertaining hundreds and, by doing so, took their side to a commanding position. After this 200-run stand was broken, Ishan Kishan played a quickfire cameo before KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav took the innings forward. It was Suryakumar who went into overdrive towards the back end of the innings and remained unbeaten on 72 to propel India close to 400. In what was an off day for their bowlers, Cameron Green ended with two wickets for Australia but was the most expensive bowler.

Having to chase a mammoth total, Australia were off to the worst possible start as they were two down with not much on the board. David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne kept the scoreboard ticking by pouncing on the loose deliveries offered by the Indians. The game’s second rain interruption came at the most inopportune time for Australia, as the loss of two wickets meant that the revised target was 317 in 33 overs. With his ambidexterity, Warner went on to reach fifty, but the same approach led to his downfall. In what was a bizarre LBW dismissal, Warner failed to recognize that he had gotten a bottom edge and decided not to review. Who knows, had he reviewed, things might well have panned out differently for Australia. With a mountain to climb, the rest of the batters had to go for their shots as well and perished at regular intervals in doing so. At 140-8, it seemed to be all over for visitors but Sean Abbott and Josh Hazlewood decided to have some fun with a 77-run stand. Abbott’s swashbuckling fifty was one of the positives for Australia in what was a disappointing loss for them.

After an outstanding effort with the bat, India needed to back it up, and they certainly did that too in a dominating fashion. Playing in place of Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for this game, Prasidh Krishna wasted no time in making an impression. The lanky seamer dismissed Matthew Short on his second ball before nipping Steven Smith for a golden duck. The Indian seamers were unable to keep the pressure on as they bowled a bit too short and allowed the Aussie batters to free their arms. The rain break allowed the hosts to regroup and assess their plans, which they indeed did. Post-resumption, Ravichandran Ashwin was given the ball from one end, and with his guile and deception, he dismantled the Australian middle order. His spin partner, Ravindra Jadeja, got into the wicket-taking act and used the favourable conditions to his advantage to pile more misery on Australia. Towards the end, complacency crept in with a few lapses in the field which allowed the tail to wag. Mohammad Shami broke the annoying stand before Ravindra Jadeja castled Sean Abbott to complete the formalities.

India seal the series with another comprehensive victory! KL Rahul’s men trounce Australia with a convincing margin of 99 runs. This victory ensures that the Men in Blue will enter the ODI World Cup as the top-ranked ODI side. On the other hand, Australia have been outplayed with both bat and ball here in Indore, and this series loss has come as a dent in their preparations for the upcoming mega event.

28.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! CASTLED! All over for Australia! Another beauty of a delivery to end proceedings here! Jadeja floats this up, full and around middle, turns away sharply, Sean Abbott backs away to fend it away but gets beaten by the huge turn as the ball goes through to rattle the stumps once again. INDIA WIN BY 99 RUNS (DLS)!

28.1 overs (0 Run) Short and turning away, on off, Sean Abbott backs away and slaps it towards deep cover. Refuses the single.

Spencer Johnson is the last man in.

27.6 overs (0 Run) OUT! BOWLED’EM! India finally gets their ninth wicket! Mohammad Shami serves this full and in line with the stumps, slower too, Josh Hazlewood gets stuck in his crease as he tries to block it out but misses it completely and the middle stump is uprooted. India one wicket away from the win now!

27.5 overs (1 Run) Full again and outside off, Sean Abbott drills it towards covers for one.

27.4 overs (2 Runs) Pitched up and around off Sean Abbott drives it through covers for a brace.

27.3 overs (1 Run) Run out chance..missed! A low full toss, on off, Josh Hazlewood digs it out towards point and sets off for the run, Ravindra Jadeja has a shy at the bowler’s end but misses with Hazlewood well short of his crease.

27.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! A streaky one now! This is on a good length and on off, Josh Hazlewood slashes and gets an outside edge towards third man again where Shardul Thakur runs to his right and dives but makes a mess of that as the ball rolls to the fence for a boundary. IND vs AUS: 2nd ODI: Josh Hazlewood hits Mohammad Shami for a 4! AUS 213/8 (27.2 Ov). Target: 317; RRR: 18.35

27.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Good shot! Mohammad Shami serves this full and outside off Josh Hazlewood throws his bat at it and slices it wide of third man for a boundary. IND vs AUS: 2nd ODI: Josh Hazlewood hits Mohammad Shami for a 4! AUS 209/8 (27.1 Ov). Target: 317; RRR: 18.51

26.6 overs (0 Run) Slower through the air, on leg, turning in sharply, Sean Abbott looks to work it away but misses and gets hit on the pads, Hazlewood wants the run but he is sent back.

26.5 overs (0 Run) Short and around off, Sean Abbott chops it down to the pitch and towards point.

26.4 overs (0 Run) BEATEN! This is quicker, full and on off, turns away, Sean Abbott looks to play at it but gets beaten on the outside edge.

26.3 overs (6 Runs) SIX! FIFTY FOR ABBOTT! A quick-fire knock and he brings up his maiden ODI half-century in style as well. This is flighted, full and on middle, Sean Abbott clears his front leg and tonks it over the long on fence for a maximum. IND vs AUS: 2nd ODI: FIFTY! Sean Abbott completes 51 (29b, 4x4, 5x6). 26.1 overs (0 Run) Flatter, full and on leg, Sean Abbott flicks it uppishly but safely towards deep mid-wicket and refuses the run again.

25.6 overs (0 Run) Another slower one now, full and on middle, Josh Hazlewood pushes it towards covers but Abbott denies the run.

25.5 overs (1 Run) A low full toss, on middle, Sean Abbott drills it towards long on for a run.

25.4 overs (0 Run) Pitched up and on middle, Sean Abbott slices it towards deep point for a single.

25.3 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! A boundary now! Mohammad Shami lands this on a hard length and on middle, Sean Abbott stays in his crease and heaves it towards the deep mid-wicket fence for four more runs. IND vs AUS: 2nd ODI: Sean Abbott hits Mohammad Shami for a 4! AUS 198/8 (25.3 Ov). Target: 317; RRR: 15.87

25.2 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Massive hit! Mohammad Shami tries the slower one but serves this full and in the slot, on middle, Sean Abbott waits for it and smokes it over the deep mid-wicket fence for a biggie. That also brings up the 50-run partnership between these two batters. IND vs AUS: 2nd ODI: It's a SIX! Sean Abbott hits Mohammad Shami. AUS 194/8 (25.2 Ov). Target: 317; RRR: 16.04

25.1 overs (0 Run) Full and on middle, Sean Abbott drives it straight to mid off.

Right then, Australia have posted a fighting total on the board, but their bowlers will need to be absolutely on point to stop the hosts. India will be confident that they have enough quality in their ranks to gun this total down and take an early lead in the series. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

The man of the moment for India, Mohammad Shami, is in for a chat. He says that the pacers enjoy each other’s success. Adds that this is the result of them spending the last 7-8 years together. Reckons that with the new ball, he has the responsibility of setting the tempo. Feels that there was not much help from the surface and hence, it was important to use the cutters.

India, on the other hand, was very good with the ball and KL Rahul utilised his assets well but he will be a bit disappointed with his keeping in this game. They played with only five bowlers but that did not affect them that much. Mohammad Shami set the tone by getting rid of Mitchell Marsh early and when the hosts needed a breakthrough, it was him again who dismissed Steven Smith. However, Shreyas Iyer will think that if he hadn’t dropped David Warner then they could have restricted the Aussies to a lower total. Ravindra Jadeja got the big wicket of Warner while Ravichandran Ashwin on his comeback got the in-form Marnus Labuschagne which helped India gain control of this game. At the death, they did concede a few boundaries, but Shami ran through the lower middle order of the visitors and registered a fine five-for while Shardul Thakur remained the only one without a wicket in this game.

Australia struggled initially and losing Mitchell Marsh in the very first over did not help either. Steven Smith wasn’t able to find his timing right but David Warner looked good and played more freely after getting a life as he went on to register a nice half-century but got out just after which shifted the momentum a bit. They added 94 runs together but the visitors failed to build long partnerships after that as both Smith and Marnus Labuschagne couldn’t convert their starts into a big score. Despite their long batting order, they were not that aggressive and it looked like they went into a shell. Cameron Green also got a start but a huge mix-up in the middle with Josh Inglis cost him his wicket. However, a 62-run stand between Inglis and Marcus Stoinis towards the end of the innings took Australia to a competitive score.

A quality bowling performance from India! Mohammad Shami led from the front with a brilliant five-wicket haul which is also the first by any Indian bowler against the Aussies on home soil that helped the hosts restrict Australia to 276. The visitors will be a bit unhappy as looking at their team, they would have hoped for something around or over 300, but their bowlers will like this challenge against this top opposition.

49.6 overs (2 Runs) OUT! RUN OUT! Australia have been bowled out on the last ball of their innings! Shardul Thakur bowls full and near the tramline on off, Pat Cummins makes room and has to reach out for the delivery. Carves it towards deep point where Suryakumar Yadav relays the back towards Ravindra Jadeja. The latter fails to pick it up cleanly and the batters think of stealing a third. Jadeja recovers well and fires an accurate throw to KL Rahul at the batting end, who takes the bails off calmly to catch Adam Zampa well short of his crease. Australia end up with 276 on the board!

49.5 overs (2 Runs) Executes the yorker, at the toes, Pat Cummins jams it out towards the vacant mid-wicket region and calls for two immediately. Ravichandran Ashwin from square leg is late to set off and does not hurl the best of throws towards the bowler. Two runs taken rather comfortably.

49.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Pat Cummins finds the fence again! Shardul Thakur once again pitches this one up around off, Pat Cummins backs away a bit and smacks it through covers for a boundary. IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: Pat Cummins hits Shardul Thakur for a 4! AUS 272/9 (49.4 Ov). CRR: 5.48

49.3 overs (0 Run) An appeal for caught-behind, but turned down! KL Rahul goes for the review! This is full and outside off, Pat Cummins throws his bat at it but misses as Rahul collects it. However, UltraEdge shows no bat involved and it is Not Out. India lose their review!

49.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Deft touch! Shardul Thakur bowls this right in the blackhole, on off, Pat Cummins opens the face of the bat just in time and squeezes it towards the third man fence for a boundary. IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: Pat Cummins hits Shardul Thakur for a 4! AUS 268/9 (49.2 Ov). CRR: 5.43

49.1 overs (1 Run) Back of a length, on middle, Adam Zampa tucks it towards deep square leg and gets off strike.

Shardul Thakur to bowl the last over. He has conceded 65 runs in his nine overs.

48.6 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Up, up and away! Mohammad Shami serves this full and in the slot, on middle, Pat Cummins clears his front leg away and smokes it way over the long on fence for a biggie. IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: It's a SIX! Pat Cummins hits Mohammad Shami. AUS 263/9 (49.0 Ov). CRR: 5.37

48.5 overs (1 Run) On a yorker length, on middle, Adam Zampa gets his bat down in time and jams it out to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Adam Zampa is the last man in.

48.4 overs (0 Run) OUT! DRAGGED ON! Five-wicket haul for Mohammad Shami! Bowls yet another off cutter, on a good length, on off, Sean Abbott gives himself room to slap it through the off side. Swings his bat a bit too hard and ends up chopping the ball back onto the stumps. Sham is delighted and so he should be. Australia continue to lose wickets towards the backend.

48.3 overs (2 Runs) At the stumps, full in length, Sean Abbott drives it hard and back past the bowler for a couple of runs.

Sean Abbott comes out to the middle now.

48.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! TAKEN! Mohammad Shami rolls his fingers over the ball and serves it on middle, on a good length, Matthew Short waits for the ball to arrive and swats it across the line. Does not get the elevation and hits it flat and straight down the throat of deep mid-wicket where Suryakumar Yadav does the rest. Shami has four now, can he finish with a five-wicket haul? India’s Test losses: a result of stereotypes and the quest for balance

A harsh summer, scorching at 30 degrees by English standards, may be sweeping across the British Isles but India failed to turn on the heat in the recently concluded World Test Championship final at London’s Oval. The tepid performance and Australia’s resultant 209-run triumph again dished out an Indian tale of being ‘so near and yet so far’ from a coveted piece of ICC silverware.

The defeatist tropes were at play yet again ranging from the insensitive ‘tigers at home, lambs abroad’ dirge on social-media to genuine queries about team-composition, decision-making and batting meltdowns. England, even in summer, can be an amalgam of warm sun, low-slung clouds, hint of rain and perhaps those odd streaks of a nip in the air. Still as a combine they cannot be reasons to bench wily spinner R. Ashwin but the team-management precisely did that, banking on a four-man seam attack and reposing faith in Ravindra Jadeja as the primary slow bowler while playing overseas.

Ashwin missed

The post-mortems have come thick and fast: Ashwin was missed, the batters didn’t contribute even if Ajinkya Rahane was exceptional in the first dig, the seamers weren’t exactly on fire and may be the turnaround from IPL was too short. All these are valid points even if we do make the concession that except in the final stretch, India has been the consistent unit across two WTC cycles, finishing runners-up in both.

Rahane was the only Indian batter to stand tall at The Oval.

However, there are other issues that simmer under the surface and perhaps remain in the backburner. Why does India at times get its playing eleven wrong when travelling abroad? It is obviously due to this quest for balance, a concept that is both utopian and utilitarian within the cricketing prism. M.S. Dhoni always wanted a seam-bowling all-rounder in Tests, someone who could bowl some overs and equally score handy runs down the order.

It meant that players ranging from Stuart Binny then to Hardik Pandya now, were all tried. The former prospered briefly before fading away while the latter now seems more inclined towards white-ball cricket and perhaps wary about his back while hurtling into bowl. In the absence of this element, team-managements have either leant on the wicketkeeper-batter like Rishabh Pant to accordingly adjust the batting and bowling arms or prop up Shardul Thakur into the all-rounder gambit or hope that the tail as a whole would wag. At times it could happen but more often than not it doesn’t.

Editorial | The second-best: on India and the World Test Championship final

And we again get back to this intangible called balance and a grim reality stares us in our face. Remember the previous generation of players? Well, there were batters, who could actually bowl. Sachin Tendulkar with his bouquet of skills – dibbly-dobblers, spin – off and leg; Sourav Ganguly – gentle seam; Virender Sehwag – off-spin, the list is longer if you get into the ODIs and T20s and factor in Yuvraj Singh, may be a Suresh Raina and a few others. What this does is that even with a beefed up batting unit and a four-man attack, India had enough players, who could turn their arm over, either to get the over-rate in track or even to prise out wickets. All these players mentioned above were fierce competitors and they were not exactly doing a holding job and hence those excessive emotions on display when they snapped up wickets. Remember, even the West Indies during those supreme days had the great Vivian Richards bowling off-spin while the four speedsters rested a bit.

Cut to the present, India’s top- and middle-order only bats, there is no itch or perhaps the skill to bowl. Kohli, a wrong-footed seamer, hasn’t bowled for long. Others seem keen on holding the willow or pouching catches within the close-in cordon and when this happens, there is unhealthy pressure on the main bowlers and then this quest for balance (read it as having a bowling-allrounder) pops up again and it then slips into stereotypes – okay it is England/Australia/ New Zealand or South Africa so let it be four seamers and one spinner! Long back, Anil Kumble had to sit on the sidelines and watch Harbhajan Singh ply his wares, now it seems it is Ashwin’s turn.

No incentive

May be this reluctance to bowl or burnish dormant bowling skills within the current Indian ranks could be attributed to a coaching structure that has throw-down specialists. At nets, there is no incentive for the batters to bowl at their bowling counterparts because the throw-down specialists would do the job. But truth be told, Tendulkar gleaned phenomenal joy in bowling an outswinger and hoodwinking Javagal Srinath or float up a googly and surprise Kumble. Yes these were nets sessions but there were layers to it.

And just as this search for balance at times means the squad’s centre of gravity dangerously tilts towards the turf and terrible defeats are suffered, another drawback has been doing the rounds without getting its share of mind-space. The old cliche was that India is the land of spin and equally its batters were resplendent against the slow art. It is not that the current practitioners of batting cannot play spin but in their emphasis on countering fierce speed merchants and perhaps in their leaning on that old battle cry of offering fire against fire, the desire to dish out some chess against spinners, of countering the twirly men with a mix of defence and attack, has been on the wane.

It is not that Indian batters have never failed against spin. Greg Matthews, Tauseef Ahmed, Saqlain Mushtaq, Ajantha Mendis and Graeme Swann, to name a few, have had their moments of success. But largely when we talk opposition spinners, there are enough batters who have taken the very best to the cleaners. Navjot Sidhu used to hoist spinners into the upper stands at will and many of his acclaimed colleagues, were equally adept at both defending against spin and striking all over the park. But currently, the dancing-down-the-pitch-and-lofting-the-spinner mode seems on the decline.

Skipper Rohit Sharma fell on the sweep against Nathan Lyon at the Oval. Sweep – conventional, slog and reverse – has its merits and readers of a certain vintage may recall Graham Gooch sweeping India out of the 1987 World Cup semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium. Still, the sweep has its risks like any across-the-line shot would entail. Even while failing against James Anderson during the 2014 tour of England, Kohli was busy finessing the slog-sweep, a ploy he wanted to use against spinner Moeen Ali. The sweep need not be avoided but a certain discretion is essential.

A pre-determined approach against the slow-art doesn’t always pay but a certain presumption and equally a sense of diffidence have marred India’s batting against spin in recent times, especially in the longer format. Perhaps it is macho to survive and quell pace but spin may not evoke such sentiments. Spin occupies a large chunk of middle overs in Tests, especially in the Indian subcontinent and even at venues like Sydney or the Oval abroad. And spin has to be countered if Tests are to last the distance.

A V.V.S. Laxman in the Hyderabad nets had to face Arshad Ayub, Venkatapathy Raju and Kanwaljit Singh. He could hone his wristy approach against spin and it came in handy against Shane Warne. Current batters don’t get such luxuries, caught up as they are with national duties and IPL jaunts. And in T20s, they are coping against spinners bowling flat, preferring a rare dot ball over an essential wicket. There is a weakness now, not due to technical flaws, but largely stemming from an attitude that obsesses over rival pace bowlers while amnesia masks the need to factor in spin.

Transition phase

As India gets into another transition phase in the forthcoming WTC cycle, these areas – be it the search for balance or even the approach against rival spinners – would be as crucial as lasting the first hour against fresh medium-pacers and stepping in with a squad that will be adaptable to all five days. Food for thought as the Indian players get a well-deserved break even if some like Ashwin would be busy playing the Tamil Nadu Premier League and some others may turn out in the Duleep Trophy.

Right then, 270 runs needed for India to win and seal the series. The target is not a big one considering the pitch conditions and spin might not even play a big role during the chase but the batting has let India down so far which gives Australia more than half a chance to get the win. Let’s see if India can turn up well and clinch the series by chasing this down. The run chase is coming up soon.

The Aussies started off with flying colors but Hardik Pandya changed the momentum and shifted that in favor of India. The hosts controlled the middle phase as well with the spinners bossing play. For India, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav were their best bowlers as they scalped 3 wickets each. They were well supported by Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj who took a couple of wickets each and overall, India will be pretty content with that effort.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Aussies started off sensationally as the two openers came out with a positive mindset and scored at a blistering pace. The duo of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head scored 68 for the first wicket but the middle order failed to capitalize on a brilliant platform laid by the openers. The introduction of Hardik Pandya into the attack helped the hosts as he changed the game by scalping 3 wickets in quick succession. The lower middle order along with the tail then scored some crucial runs and helped the Aussies to post a total they could fight for. Most of the Aussie batters did get starts but no one could step up and convert that into a big one.

A good fightback from India after a difficult start right at the top restricts Australia to a total of 269 runs for the loss of 10 wickets. Inspired bowling changes and a clinical fielding performance helps India to restrict the Aussies for not too many on the board in this series decider.

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of India, says that it is a dry pitch and it has been under covers for a long time. Adds that they will now look to bat well and defend it later. Feels that it is important to stay calm and colllected. Also says that it is important to make the right decisions. Mentions that he is not too sure how the wicket will play but hopes that there is turn on offer in the evening. Ends by informing the two changes in their team. Ishan Kishan makes way for him and Axar Patel replaces Shardul Thakur.

Steven Smith, the skipper of Australia, says that they will bowl first. Adds that it looks like a decent surface and it was under cover so there might be something. Tells that they got to a reasonable start in the last game, but building partnerships in the middle will be crucial. Mentions that it is a good learning experience for them to play on these kinds of wickets as the World Cup will be played here and is not too far away. Says they just have to play good consistent cricket and informs that they have made two changes. Nathan Ellis comes in for Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey is back for Josh Inglis.

Australia (Playing XI) – Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith (C), Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey (WK) (In for Josh Inglis), Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis (In for Glenn Maxwell), Sean Abbott, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa.

India (Playing XI) – Rohit Sharma (C) (In for Ishan Kishan), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel (In for Shardul Thakur), Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj.

TOSS – The two captains are out in the middle. The coin toss lands in the favour of Steven Smith and Australia have opted to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT – Deep Dasgupta is pitchside and says that there was some drizzle earlier, but now it is clear and the sun is out. Ajit Agarkar joins him and tells that this is black soil wicket and there are some cracks, but it won’t effect much. Says that as the pitch was under cover, batting might be a bit tricky at first, but it will get better as the game goes deep and teams will like to chase in this game.

On the other hand, Australia had an off day with the bat, but Mitchell Marsh was one of the positives for them. Mitchell Starc and Marcus Stoinis bowled their hearts out in the second half, but a low total meant they were unable to defend it. Australian fans will be hoping that their side can put in a complete performance and draw level in the series. Will the visitors manage to force a series decider? Or will we see the hosts gain an unassailable 2-0 lead? Let’s find out. Toss and team news coming up shortly…

In the first ODI, a clinical effort with the ball led by Mohammad Shami saw them bundle out Australia for 188.
