The year 2023 has been phenomenal for Indian cinema. From RRR‘s stupendous show at the global box office with its larger-than-life cinematic experience to Alia Bhatt casting a spell with her first Met Gala appearance, the Indian film industry made a mark on the world map. Not many would disagree that it was one of the grandest days for fans when RRR’s Naatu Naatu won the Best Original Song award at the Oscars in March. It was none other than Bollywood icon Deepika Padukone who introduced the track at the world’s biggest awards show. Now, let us take a look at the stars who made India proud on the global platform.

RRR at Golden Globe Awards – January

SS Rajamouli’s RRR was nominated in two categories – Best Orginal Song and Best Non-English Language Film.  The film was represented at the Golden Globe Awards by SS Rajamouli, Jr NTR and Ram Charan, who was accompanied by his wife Upasana Kamineni.

Best Orginal Song

Naatu Naatu, the electrifying track featuring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, won Best Original Song. It also became the first Asian song to win a Golden Globe.

MM Keeravani, in his acceptance speech, thanked the team of RRR and his wife MM Srivalli. He said, “Thank you very much HFPA [Hollywood Foreign Press Association] for this prestigious award, Golden Globe. I am very much overwhelmed with this great moment happening and I am very happy to share this excitement with my wife, who is sitting right there.”

Best Non-English Language Film

RRR missed out in this category to Argentina, 1985 from Argentina. Other nominees in the category included All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), Close (Belgium), and Decision to Leave, (South Korea).

95th Academy Awards – March

It was a gloRRRious year for India at the Academy Awards.

1. Naatu Naatu

The electrifying number from SS Rajamouli’s RRR won an Oscar in the Best Original Song category. The crazy viral track, which made everyone groove, was composed by MM Keeravani.  Singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava also performed live at the prestigious award night. The performance received a standing ovation from the audience. An Oscar-worthy show, indeed.

Oh, and, how can we not talk about Deepika Padukone, who presented the song? She became the third Indian to present at the Oscars after Persis Khambatta and Priyanka Chopra.

At the time of introducing Naatu Naatu, Deepika Padukone said, “An irresistibly catchy chorus, electrifying beats and killer dance moves to match have made this song a global sensation.”

2. The Elephant Whisperers

The Elephant Whisperers, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves, roared in the Best Documentary Short Subject category. Backed by Guneet Monga, it became the first Indian film to win an Oscar in this category and the third to be nominated.

Cannes 2023 – May

Bollywood celebrities added stardust to the French Riviera and how. Sara Ali Khan, Mrunal Thakur, Anushka Sharma and Manushi Chhillar made their red carpet debuts. They were joined by Vijay Varma, who made a comeback in the coveted event. Of course, there was Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The actress, who is a bonafide regular, turned heads in her silver hooded gown.

Aditi Rao Hydari, Esha Gupta, Diana Penty, Surveen Chawla, Sunny Leone, Urvashi Rautela, Mouni Roy, Kusha Kapila and Dolly Singh were also part of the Indian contingent at Cannes 2023.

Met Gala 2023 – May

The biggest fashion spectacle of the year paid tribute to the legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld. The theme was – Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.

1. Alia Bhatt – her first Met Gala

Alia Bhatt looked straight out of a fairy tale in her customised pearl gown. It was Alia’s debut and she nailed the Chanel bride look with her beauty and grace. The outfit featured 1,00,000 pearls.

2. Natasha Poonawalla

Style icon Natasha Poonawalla honoured Lagerfeld by staying loyal to her bold and out-of-the-box fashion choices. Natasha’s outfit was (almost) as iconic as Karl Lagerfeld himself.

3. Priyanka Chopra

There is a reason why we call Priyanka Chopra a global icon. The signature black Maison Valentino couture dress was a testament to the statement. She carried the strapless number with a dramatic slit.  The black bow detailing and leather gloves along with a black faille cape were textbook perfect. Priyanka’s plus one — Nick Jonas – opted for a Valentino Black Tie blazer, trousers and black silk faille tie.

Alia Bhatt at Gucci Show – September

Alia Bhatt is the first Indian ambassador of Gucci. The actress also attended the luxury brand’s Cruise 2024 fashion show in Seoul, South Korea, earlier this year.  She wore a black mini dress with cut-out patterns and carried a Gucci Jackie 1961 transparent bag. Alia’s tiny bag grabbed a lot of attention. Reason? It was empty.

Alia Bhatt And The Archies cast at Netflix Tudum – June

1. Alia Bhatt

Alia made her Hollywood debut with Heart of Stone. She joined her co-stars Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan in Brazil for Netflix’s annual global fan event, Tudum. The film also marked many firsts for Alia. It was her first action movie and her first after announcing pregnancy.

2. The Archies

The Archies, directed by Zoya Akhtar, was the Bollywood debut of star kids — Suhana Khan, Agastya Nanda and Khushi Kapoor. At Tudum, the makers introduced the first look of the film and team The Archies danced to the song Sunoh.

The Netflix film was released on December 7.

Emmy Awards – November

It was a proud moment for India when Vir Das won an Emmy Award for his comedy special Vir Das: Landing. He shared it with Derry Girls – Season 3.

Apart from Vir Das, Shefali Shah and Jim Sarbh were also nominated in the Best Performance (actor/actress) category.

Shefali Shah’s performance in the web series Delhi Crime Season 2 earned her an Emmy nomination. She was competing with Connie Nielsen from Denmark, Billie Piper from the UK and Karla Souza from Mexico.

Jim Sarbh was nominated for his role in Rocket Boys. He was competing against Gustavo Bassani from Argentina, Martin Freeman from the UK and Jonas Karlsson from Sweden.

Producer Ekta Kapoor was honoured with the International Emmy Directorate for her contribution to the world of television and cinema.

Paris Fashion Week October

Navya Naveli Nanda, Amitabh Bachchan’s granddaughter, made her runway debut at Paris Fashion Week 2023’s L’Oreal show. Navya was accompanied by her biggest cheerleaders — mother Shweta Nanda and grandmother, veteran actress Jaya Bachchan. Navya’s aunt, actress  Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, as always set the stage on fire with panache.

Marrakech Film Festival November

Anurag Kashyap‘s happy album with Mads Mikkelsen, renowned for his roles in movies like Hannibal, Another Round, The Hunt, and Polar, was a hit.

The filmmaker was a part of the Conversations With segment alongside The Mentalist fame Simon Baker, Faouzi Bensaïdi, Bertrand Bonello, Matt Dillon, Naomi Kawase, Viggo Mortensen and Andrew Zvyagintsev.

Academy Museum Gala – December

Deepika Padukone is a boss lady. There is no better way of saying that. She is an actress, entrepreneur and fitness enthusiast. She is also the queen of the fashion world. Proof?  Her Academy Museum Gala outfit.  The actress picked a signature Louis Vuitton gown for the evening. The single-shoulder piece featured a corset detailing that extended to a floor-sweeping trail.

Red Sea Film Festival – December

Katrina Kaif, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and Karan Johar led the celeb roll call at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt

While Katrina Kaif rested her faith in a saree for the red carpet, Alia Bhatt slipped into a floral gown with balloon sleeves.

Ranveer Singh

Now, let us focus on the powerhouse of energy and talent — Ranveer Singh. The actor received an award for being “an icon of Hindi cinema”. He was honoured by Hollywood sensation Sharon Stone.

Karan Johar

Karan Johar attended the festival in the capacity of a producer. KJo represented Kill, jointly backed by Dharma Productions and Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga. The Nikhil Nagesh Bhat film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in August.

Recap 2023: Adipurush To Priyanka Chopra’s “Beef” – 10 Showbiz Controversies

Image was shared on X. (courtesy: Offladipurush)

As we inch closer to the end of 2023, there is a lot to celebrate in the world of entertainment. There were blockbuster hits, Oscar wins and some much-in-love couples exchanging vows. However, once you remove the rose-tinted glasses, you can see that 2023 was not without its red flags. From protests over the colour of an actress’ bikini to a nation coming together to joke about bad VFX in a much-awaited film, the year has been a rollercoaster ride for stakeholders of the entertainment world.

Here’s a quick look at some of the top controversies of the year that had us going, “What?!”

1. What’s in a colour – Besharam Rang

When Deepika Padukone stepped out in a bikini in Besharam Rangthe first song of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, the internet stopped to stand and stare. But while one section of the internet was waxing eloquent about Deepika’s screen presence and stunning dance movies, a bunch of viewers were not happy with one of Deepika’s costumes. The outfit’s colour sparked protests and poster burnings by right-wing groups across the country. The Censor Board recommended revisions, and in the final version, the controversial outfit appears in a scene following the contentious Besharam Rang song.

2. A furore of “epic” proportions – Adipurush

Adipurush was, without a doubt, one of the most widely anticipated films of the year. It was an adaptation of The Ramayana, India’s most important and revered epic. The film had everything going for it – a superstar cast headlined by Prabhas and Kriti Sanon, a successful director – Om Raut and dialogues by Manoj Muntashir. The film was a sure-shot box office superhit until it was not. The film was heavily criticised for lacklustre performances, poor screenplay, dialogues that fans described as lazy and disrespectful and dismal VFX. Dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir Shukla announced revisions to address viewer concerns, as memes about the film and widespread criticism affected the box-office earnings.

Certain cast members of the iconic Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana ( from the late 1980s) such as Sunil Lahri who played Lakshman, and Dipika Chikhlia who played Sita, openly criticised Adipurush. A petition was also filed seeking “revocation of the film certificate of the movie for allegedly distorting sacred texts”. It was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

3. Modifications galore – OMG 2

The impact of the Adipurush debacle was a far-reaching one. Given the furore of the lacklustre adaptation of the Ramayana, Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2, which also had a significant religious theme, went through the Revision Committee days before its release. The review resulted in 27 changes in the final cut, including both audio and visual modifications and the film being awarded an ‘A’ certificate. This came as a blow to the makers, who were touching on the importance of sex education in schools, with their film.

4. Warning! “Deep fakes” ahead

An example of technology rearing its ugly head came in the form of “deep fakes” that shook industry insiders and fans alike. Some of Indian cinema’s biggest names – predominantly women – were subjected to the menace of deep fake. Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, and Alia Bhatt, among others, fell victim to the dangerous trend. Big names in the industry such as Amitabh Bachchan, Vijay Deverakonda, Naga Chaitanya, and Mrunal Thakur, among others, highlighted the issue, calling for preventive and corrective action. The matter was also mentioned as an issue that requires attention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and an investigation is underway in Rashmika Mandanna’s case, which was the first incident that led to an avalanche of such cases.

5. Salman Khan and the tricky world of dress codes

Let us all just make peace with it. Salman Khan, controversy’s favourite child in Bollywood, is too cool for dress codes and there is no problem with this. Some fans even love him for throwing caution to the sartorial winds. But the internet had a major issue with Salman Khan when he seemed to devise his dress codes for women. Salman’s strong opinion (and alleged imposition) on how women around him should dress came to light when his Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan co-star and debutant Palak Tiwari said in an interview that Salman Khan had a “rule” for girls on set. Quoting him, she said, “Koi bhi ladki mere set pe ho (any girl on my set), neckline should be here (pointing towards the collarbone.) All the girls should be covered, like good proper girls. My mom saw me wearing full tee, joggers, full covered and going to set and she was like ‘how you are dressed so well?’ I told her ‘Salman sir ke set pe rule hai (Salman sir has this rule on set) and she was like ‘Wow! Very good’.”

The comments gained traction for all the wrong reasons, with many slamming Salman Khan for his hypocrisy and problematic views. In an attempt to explain himself – and only making this worse for himself, as per the internet – the superstar said on an episode of host Rajat Sharma’s Aap Ki Adalat, Salman said, “I feel that a woman’s body is a lot more precious, so as much as it is covered, I feel it’s better.”

6. Trisha Krishnan Vs Mansoor Ali Khan

One of the biggest hits this year was Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo starring Thalapathy Vijay. While the film made headlines for being a tremendous box office success, it also made noise for the blatant display of misogyny and glorification of rape culture by Mansoor Ali Khan, who plays a pivotal role in the movie. It all started when Mansoor in an interview, expressed disappointment about the absence of “bedroom scenes” with Trisha in Leo. He also lamented the scarcity of rape scenes in Tamil films, sparking social media outrage. Several big names including Lokesh and Chiranjeevi condemned Mansoor’s comment. The National Women’s Commission also filed a police complaint against the 61-year-old actor, booking him on charges of sexual harassment and intent to outrage a woman’s modesty for his comments. After a lacklustre apology from Mansoor Ali Khan, Trisha decided to take the high road by tweeting the Alexander Pope quote, “To err is human, to forgive is divine.”

7. The hug that broke the internet – Priyanka & Karan Johar

Priyanka Chopra made headlines in 2023 when she confirmed rumours that had been circulating for years and stated that she had moved to Hollywood because she had beef with people in Bollywood. She told podcast host Dax Shepard: “I was being pushed into a corner in the industry (Bollywood). I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game so I kind of was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break.”

The podcast went viral and fingers were pointed at Karan Johar, who was also pulled up by the internet for an old interview where he admitted to once wanting to “sabotage” the career of another outsider – Anushka Sharma.

While the internet was talking about Priyanka Chopra and KJo’s “beef” and Reddit pages were abuzz with plausible reasons for the fall-out, the two came face-to-face at the grand launch of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai. The unthinkable happened and the two hugged warmly! The video went viral in no time and the internet had a field day making memes.

8. Nana Patekar slaps a fan [or does he?]

An unflattering video of Nana Patekar hitting what appeared to be a fan asking for a selfie went viral on social media a few months ago. Hours after fans chastised the actor for slapping a fan, director Anil Sharma shared that it was a scene from his new film. “Nana has not hit anyone, rather that is a shot from my film. We were filming it on the road in the middle of Banaras, where a boy who comes near Nana has to be hit on the head. Shooting was going on and Nana also hit him…But the crowd gathered there recorded it on their mobile cameras and then leaked the shot of the film. Now, Nana is being projected as a negative and rude actor on social media, which is completely wrong. Through Aaj Tak, I would request that the fans understand the truth of this video. This is a shot from the film. Nana has not hit anyone,” he told Aaj Tak.

However, in a separate video, Nana Patekar said that he did slap a stranger, taking him for an actor on the set. “I don’t know who the man was. I thought he was from our team. Later we found that this man was different. We tried to find him but he ran away. Probably, one of his friends shot the entire thing. I haven’t turned down any fans for photos so far. This incident happened by mistake. I don’t know where this man came from. If there’s any misunderstanding, please forgive me. I haven’t done anything such yet,” he said in a clip, originally in Hindi. He added that he was ready to apologise to the man in person if he were to meet the young man again.

9. Sonam Kapoor Vs Rana Daggubati: ‘Guess the actress’ gone wrong

Rana Daggubati is one of the most popular names in Indian cinema, for his work as well as his off-screen persona. He is often seen cheering for his colleagues. During one such event where he was promoting Dulquer Salmaan’s King Of Kotha, Rana Daggubati said that “a big Hindi cinema heroine” had once wasted Dulquer’s time by getting on phone calls with her London-based partner while on set. The internet guessed that the Bollywood actress in question was Sonam Kapoor, who is married to London-based businessman Anand Ahuja and worked with Dulquer Salmaan in the 2019 film The Zoya Factor.

Sonam, needless to say, was not happy. However, she kept her comments limited to a cryptic post, which said, “ Small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events and great minds discuss ideas…Just a little something I would like some people to know…Especially when discussing things about people that are made up.”

Rana Daggubati followed up with an apology, which – among other things said – “I am genuinely troubled by the negativity that has been aimed at Sonam due to my comments that are totally untrue and were meant entirely in a light-hearted manner. As friends, we often exchange playful banter, and I deeply regret that my words have been misinterpreted. I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt apologies to Sonam and Dulquer, both of whom I hold in great esteem…”

10. Live Naatu Naatu at Oscars fails

While Naatu Naatu from RRR won India an Oscar in the Best Original Song category this year, the live performance of the song was criticised.  The dancers who performed, Billy Mustapha and Jason Glover, are not of Indian descent but Canadian and American, respectively. Fans argue that casting non-South Asian dancers undermines the anti-colonial essence of the song. For context, the song is originally portrayed as a dance battle in pre-independence India in the film featuring actors Ram Charan and Jr NTR. In the song, Raju [Ram Charan] and Bheem [Jr NTR], outdancing their British opponents. The irony, therefore, was unmissable.

The silver lining, however, was that the song was sung at the award show by the original voices behind the track, Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava. Further, the performance was introduced by India’s sweetheart Deepika Padukone.

Ben Dwarshuis walks out to bat now.

0.6 over (1 Run) NOT OUT! Aaron Hardie bowls another quick one and on the hard length in line with middle and off. Yashasvi Jaiswal tries to play it across the line but is beaten and hit on the pads. A loud appeal which is turned down by the umpire. The Aussies have reviewed it. No spike on the Ultra Edge. The ball tracking confirms that the ball is pitching outside leg stump. Yashasvi Jaiswal survives but a brilliant over by Aaron Hardie.

A huge appeal for LBW but it is turned down. The bowler, Aaron Hardie seems very confident and skipper Matthew Wade does opt for the review. Nothing on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking shows that the ball is pitching outside leg. NOT OUT comes up on the big screen!

0.5 over (0 Run) On the hard length and just outside off. Yashasvi Jaiswal punches it to cover but is collected by the fielder. Good fielding and even better bowling.

0.4 over (0 Run) A bit short and over middle. Yashasvi Jaiswal stands back and punches it to mid off for another dot ball.

0.3 over (0 Run) On the good length again. Yashasvi Jaiswal drives it now to the cover-point region but fails to find the gap. Three dots in a row.

0.2 over (0 Run) On length and on the off pole. Yashasvi Jaiswal drives it down to the fielder at mid off.

0.1 over (0 Run) Beauty! Aaron Hardie goes full just shaping on the inside. Yashasvi Jaiswal swings hard but is beaten by the swing. Good start by Hardie.

We are all set for the match to begin! The umpires are now out in the middle and the players of Australia are taking their places on the field. The Indian opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad also stride out to the middle. Aaron Hardie has been surprisingly handed the new ball and he is raring to go. Let’s play…

PITCH REPORT – Murali Kartik is pitchside. He is joined by Matthew Hayden who starts by saying that one needs to know how much is enough and the wicket is nice and hard with a layer of grass on it. Adds that the ground dimensions are 74 meters uniformly but still it is a solid wicket and dew will play a role. Kartik adds the dew will intensify at around 8 pm IST.

The Indian skipper, Suryakumar Yadav says they would have loved to bowl first but he doesn’t mind batting first. Says the wicket looks good and it is the first T20I being played here so he is excited. Informs that they have four changes in total.

Matthew Wade, the captain of Australia says that he will bowl first. Mentions that there are five changes in the squad due to the players going back to Australia. He adds that the selectors and the coaching staff helped him a lot in this series and ends by saying he looks forward to this match.

Australia (Playing XI) – Josh Philippe (In for Glenn Maxwell), Travis Head, Ben McDermott (In for Josh Inglis), Aaron Hardie, Tim David, Matthew Short (In for Marcus Stoinis), Matthew Wade (C/WK), Ben Dwarshuis (In for Kane Richardson), Chris Green (On debut) (In for Nathan Ellis), Jason Behrendorff, Tanveer Sangha.

India (Playing XI) – Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer (In for Ishan Kishan), Suryakumar Yadav (C), Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (In for Tilak Varma) (WK), Axar Patel, Deepak Chahar (In for Arshdeep Singh), Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar (In for Prasidh Krishna).

TOSS – Australia have won the toss and have elected to BOWL first.

Australia too have a new-look side, yet again, as Maxwell, Inglis and Stoinis have flown home and the likes of Ben McDermott, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Philippe and Chris Green have been included in the squad. They have a bit of momentum with the win in the previous game but given the chopping and changing of the playing XI, we have seen some patchy cricket from the Aussies. However, Jason Behrendorff has stood head and shoulders above the rest and his bowling will once again be key for the touring side. Can Australia level the series? Or will the inexperience of not playing in sub-continental conditions cost them dearly? We shall find out. Toss and team news in a bit.

India have had a couple of additions to the side with the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar coming in and Mukesh Kumar also returning to the side after his marriage. But whether they come straight into the playing XI remains to be seen and if so, who does India bench? The batting, in general, has fired and they have put more than 200 runs on the board in all the previous three games. The key for Suryakumar Yadav and co will be to tighten up the bowling a bit and get that series-clinching third win.

Hello and a warm welcome to one and all! We are in Raipur for the fourth T20I between India and Australia. The hosts currently lead the five-match series 2-1, but the Aussies pulled off a remarkable run chase in the previous game thanks to some Glenn Maxwell magic and will look to convert the momentum into a series-levelling win.

2.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Up and over! Floated up, full and outside off, Yashasvi Jaiswal opens up the off side and lofts it firmly over extra cover for a boundary.

2.1 overs (2 Runs) Starts off with a loosener as Maxwell floats this one well down the leg side. Josh Inglis fails to collect it as well and the batters get a run along with the wide.

1.6 overs (0 Run) A tidy first over from Ellis! Bowled on a hard length again over the stumps, Yashasvi Jaiswal looks to shuffle across and get inside the line to play the lap shot but misses out.

1.5 overs (0 Run) Hard length outside off, a bit of room to free the arms but Yashasvi Jaiswal cuts it straight on the bounce to point.

1.4 overs (1 Run) Takes pace off and bowls it around the top of off, Ruturaj Gaikwad stays watchful and dabs it down toward backward point for one.

1.3 overs (0 Run) Goes full now and looks to attack the batter’s pads, Ruturaj Gaikwad flicks it straight to the man at mid-wicket.

1.3 overs (1 Run) WIDE! On a good length and on the pads, just drifting down leg, Gaikwad misses the tickle and a wide is called.

1.2 overs (1 Run) Uppish but safe! Pitched up again around off, Yashasvi Jaiswal looks to drive on the up but the ball holds a bit and Jaiswal gets it off the inner half again to the left of the bowler. The ball eludes the diving bowler and Jaiswal picks up a quick single to mid on.

1.1 overs (0 Run) Starts from over the wicket and pitches it up around off, a bit in the slot, Yashasvi Jaiswal throws his hands at it but mistimes it off the inner half of the bat.

Nathan Ellis to operate from the other end.

0.6 over (2 Runs) On a hard length again and angled into the body, again its the indifferent bounce that troubles the batter and Ruturaj Gaikwad misses the pull. The ball goes off the thigh pad down to fine leg and they pick up a couple of leg byes. 10 off the first over, a good start for India.

0.5 over (1 Run) A touch shorter over middle, Yashasvi Jaiswal awkwardly pulls it away behind square leg and picks up a single.

0.5 over (1 Run) WIDE! An attempted slower one, full and spilled way down the leg side for a wide.

0.4 over (1 Run) Hits the deck hard and angles it at the body, Ruturaj Gaikwad doesn’t quite move his feet and goes after the pull, miscuing it down to deep square leg for a run.

0.3 over (4 Runs) FOUR! Ruturaj Gaikwad is off the mark in fine fashion! Serves this one full around off, floated up and gets it to shape away. Gaikwad gets on the front foot and just leans on before caressing it through covers for a boundary.

0.2 over (1 Run) Yashasvi Jaiswal and India are off the mark! Bowls it back of a length this time over middle, Jaiswal bends his back a bit and steers it down to third man for a single.

0.1 over (0 Run) Starts off with a with a pitched-up delivery on middle, gets this one to swing back in nicely. Yashasvi Jaiswal gets his front leg out of the way and whips it straight to mid on.

We are all set for the match to begin! The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of Australia. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad are the two openers for India. Marcus Stoinis has been handed the new ball and is raring to go. Let’s play…

The Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav says that they were also looking to bowl first and with the amount of dew there has been here, it was the sensible decision. Adds that the way the boys turned up with the bat after conceding 200 plus runs was nice to see and will look to continue the same. On his captaincy, he says that he is starting to get a hang of it and ends by informing that they are going with the same eleven.

Matthew Wade, the captain of Australia says they are going to bowl. Adds that they expect dew to come later and the wicket should be good. Mentions it’s about looking at the conditions and doing accordingly. He reckons, Australia did well in the last game but India were tidy in some areas. He informs that almost everyone’s available with Adam Zampa coming in for Jason Behrendorrf and Glenn Maxwell coming in for Aaron Hardie.

Australia (Playing XI) – Steven Smith, Matthew Short, Josh Inglis, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell (In for Aaron Hardie), Tim David, Matthew Wade (C/WK), Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Tanveer Sangha, Adam Zampa (In for Jason Behrendorff).

India (Unchanged Playing XI) – Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (WK), Suryakumar Yadav (C), Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, and Prasidh Krishna.

TOSS – Australia win the toss and they will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT – Murali Kartik is pitchside. He says that only three T20 games prior to this have been played here, so, the sample size is small. Matthew Hayden joins him and says in an international game there’s always pressure and the average score is 139 but reckons the pitch looks good and might turn and bounce and there will be more runs. Kartik adds that it is dry and hard and mentions that there will be dew in the game, so, the captain winning the toss will look to chase.

Australia too had a new-look side for this series but had some experienced names in the squad. Matthew Wade donned the captain’s armband but it was former skipper Steven Smith who picked up a stellar fifty before Josh Inglis simply put the Indian bowlers to the sword and raced away to an amazing ton which helped the Aussies breach the 200-run mark but the inexperienced bowling line up failed to defend the target. They will hope to mend the little things and get back on level terms. Can Australia make it 1-1? Or will India cruise to a 2-0 lead? We shall find out. Toss and team news in a bit.

India came into this series with the dismay of the World Cup final behind them and a fairly young but T20-wise experienced side. The skipper, Suryakumar Yadav might not have had the best of times in the field as his bowlers conceded a lot of runs but certainly made a mark with the bat with a thunderous 80-run inning. Ishan Kishan too made a half-century and it was some heroics from Rinku Singh right at the death that sealed a 1-0 lead for the hosts.

Hello and a warm welcome to one and all! We are at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram for the 2nd T20I between India and Australia. It was a riveting start to the five-match series as the hosts won the contest on the final ball of the game which was a no ball despite a sensational ton by Josh Inglis that propelled Australia to 208. We can expect more fireworks from this contest as well.

India missed out with a 6th choice bowler. Even the inexperienced came into play. Although the pitch was paradise to bat but the bowlers were too short and too wide which gave Australia an easy run off. However, we feel that another option for Suryakumar Yadav could have made a difference. Right then! This is a really good pitch to bat on. India need to bat well though. Australia have to bowl more slower balls. Let’s see how things pan out.

A mammoth total by the Aussies who will be pretty happy at the break. It was two experienced players who ran the show. Steven Smith and Josh Inglis hammered India all over the ground. Smith was struggling to time but Josh Inglis was enjoying his time up the order. Steven Smith scored fifty while Josh Inglis scored a fantastic century before Tim David walked out to give a powerful finish.

19.6 overs (0 Run) Outstanding from Kumar. Goes full and outside off. David gets across but fumbles to play and gets hit on the pads. Dot to end. Australia end with 208 runs.

19.5 overs (0 Run) Excellent from Kumar! A yorker on off. David jams it out back to the bowler. Just superb.

19.4 overs (1 Run) JUST ONE! Too full and on middle, Stoinis plays it to long on for a single.

19.4 overs (2 Runs) A full toss, outside off. David doesn’t time it well as he hits it to deep cover. Just 3 runs till now. No, no, the siren rings. No ball is called as Mukesh Kumar has overstepped. Free-hit next.

19.3 overs (1 Run) Very full and outside off, Stoinis drives it to deep cover for a single. Good last over from Mukesh Kumar. Can he end well?

19.2 overs (1 Run) Well bowled! A yorker slanting on leg. David falls over as he digs it out to cover for a single. India think it is off the pads and takes it upstairs. It hits the boot but the ball was sliding down. Clearly not out.

19.1 overs (0 Run) David missed out there. A full toss on off, David hits it straight to covers.

Mukesh Kumar to bowl the final over.

18.6 overs (1 Run) Tim keeps the strike. Full and on off, it is hit to long off for one.

18.5 overs (6 Runs) SIX! There is a reason David was so eager for that single. 200 up for the Aussies. This is full and outside off, David smokes it over extra-cover for a biggie.

18.4 overs (1 Run) Short and outside off, Marcus Stoinis drops it to point and takes a single. David runs to the danger side and makes it with a dive.

18.3 overs (1 Run) Full and on off, this is pushed to long off for a single.

18.3 overs (1 Run) Wide! This is full and wide of off. David steps across to swing but misses. Arshdeep Singh is not happy as he feels David moved across.

18.2 overs (0 Run) Goes full and outside off, David hits it straight to cover.

18.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! powered! Length ball, outside off. David muscles it over covers and it races to the fence. Australia looking for 220 here.

18.1 overs (1 Run) Wide! Slower one but again way outside off, David leaves it for a wide.

18.1 overs (1 Run) Wide! Full and way outside off. David swings and misses.

17.6 overs (2 Runs) DROPPED! Two drop catches, a run out chance missed by Ravi Bishnoi and goes for fifty with the ball as well. Not a good day till now for him. Length and outside off, Stoinis swings and hits it over covers, not of the middle. Ravi Bishnoi runs back from infield, tries to take over his shoulder but misses.

17.5 overs (1 Run) Drops it short and on middle, David pulls off the higher part of the blade to deep square leg for one.

17.4 overs (0 Run) A slower bumper on leg, David looks to pull but misses.

17.3 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Off the mark in style. A length ball, outside off, David punches it through point and it goes to the fence.

Tim David comes in to give a powerful finish.

17.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! GONE! End of a brilliant knock from Inglis! Prasidh Krishna bowls an off-cutter, lands it on the pads. Inglis tries to go over square leg but fails to power and Yashasvi Jaiswal holds his nerves in the deep. Superb knock from Inglis.

17.1 overs (1 Run) Good run from Inglis! Outside off, this is tapped to point. Marcus Stoinis wasn’t looking for a run but Inglis calls and makes his ground easily.

16.6 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Fourth boundary of the over. India looking all over the place. This is full and outside off, Inglis carves it over point and it races to the fence. 18 runs of this one.

16.5 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Inglis won’t mind at all. He is enjoying his own show. Shorter and on middle, Inglis looks to pull but top edges it over the keeper and to fine leg.

16.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! CENTURY FOR INGLIS! A huge roar from Inglis as he reaches the landmark. His first century. Bowls it wide again, outside off, Inglis gets some bat on it and the ball rolls past third man for a boundary.

16.4 overs (1 Run) Wide! Tries to stay away from the arc but bowls it over the tramline, WIDED.

16.3 overs (0 Run) A slower length ball, outside off, Inglis swings and misses.

16.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! That is outrageous. Suryakumar Yadav is impressed as well. Full and outside off, Inglis switch-hits, plays it over short third for a boundary. Inglis is 2 runs away now for a ton.

16.1 overs (1 Run) Length ball, outside off, this is dropped to cover for a single.

Arshdeep Singh is into the attack.

15.6 overs (0 Run) A huge appeal for caught behind but nothing given. Ishan Kishan convinces Suryakumar Yadav to take it upstairs. UltraEdge shows NO SPIKE. NOT OUT. A widish yorker, outside off. Inglis looks to drive but misses. There was a spike but it was off the blade hitting the turf.

Marcus Stoinis walks to the middle.

15.5 overs (0 Run) OUT! RUN OUT! Fifty and out for Smith! This is on a length and outside off. Smith gets across and paddles it to short fine leg. Fumbles as he plays and also while running across. Prasidh Krishna was quick to pick up and throw it back to Mukesh Kumar who clips the bails off.

A run out appeal is taken upstairs…

15.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Fifty for Smith! Started slowly but is looking to end on a high note now. Length ball, outside off, Smith cuts it through point for a boundary.

15.3 overs (2 Runs) A full toss on off. Smith lofts it over to long off for a couple of runs.

15.2 overs (0 Run) Short again but this time outside off. Smith looks to pull but misses.

15.1 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Short, slow and on middle, Smith pulls it late behind square leg for a boundary.

We are all set for the run chase. The umpires are out on the field. The Aussies are seen in a huddle along the boundary line taking some final instructions before walking out on the field to take their respective positions.

Right then, that is it from the first innings and it was an exciting one as expected. The Aussies were off to a great start and were looking to breach the 400-run mark but a complete bowling effort by the Indians managed to restrict the Aussies to just over 350. Apart from the top 4, none of the batters could keep the momentum going and runs coming. The target for India is 353 and they have to chase it in 50 overs. Will Australia defend the target or will India pull off the highest run chase on this ground? It will be an interesting chase where all questions will be answered. So grab a cup of coffee and join us in a while for the exciting run chase.

Mitchell Marsh is in for a chat. He starts by saying that these are probably the hottest conditions he has batted in. Mentions that it is a beautiful wicket and hopes to defend the total. Shares that after assessing the conditions quickly, it was important to get as many as possible in the powerplay. Credits David Warner for the way he batted. Feels that it would have been nice to get a hundred but the kind of platform they set was the way they wanted to bat. Reckons that it was tough to bat as the ball got softer and the change of pace worked as well. Feels that we are in for an exciting chase.

The Indians started off their bowling innings really poorly and got hit all around the ground in the opening overs. Prasidh Krishna gave them the first breakthrough after dismissing Warner and giving some hope to his team. The next strong partnership was broken by the spinner Kuldeep Yadav who dismissed the dangerous-looking Marsh before he could reach his century. Not taking timely wickets in the middle phases allowed the Aussies to build strong partnerships but after Mohammed Siraj trapped Smith in front of the stumps, the wickets kept coming in regular intervals. The pressure was not completely off until Marnus Labuschagne was on the crease and the job of dismissing him was completed by the star speedster, Jasprit Bumrah. A good bowling effort towards the end by the Indians managed to keep the Aussies from reaching 400 which was looking very near from the way they were batting. The target for India now is 353 runs and it will be the highest chase on this ground.

After Australia won the toss and chose to bat first, they got off to a great start thanks to the explosive opening pair of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh. They both took apart the Indian bowling attack in the opening phases. Warner was the first batter to depart which brought in Steven Smith. He also complemented Marsh and built a strong partnership with him. They both managed to reach their half-centuries with Marsh departing when he was just short of a century. Marnus Labuschagne was the next batter in and he also batted well. Smith was dismissed after scoring 74 runs. After that none of the batters could keep the momentum going and wickets kept falling on the other end. Marnus Labuschagne was still going strong but he too fell under pressure after scoring a good 72 runs. The Aussies had to press pause on their momentum towards the end as wickets were falling quickly. At one point in the innings they were looking to cross 400 but now they have to be content with 352 on the board.

A good comeback from India towards the middle and the end of the innings. They managed to restrict the Aussies to a score of 352, thanks to a good bowling effort and the captaincy of Rohit Sharma who managed his bowlers well. Mitchell Marsh was the top scorer for Australia and Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker for the Men in Blue as he took 3 wickets. A very eventful first innings comes to an end as Australia registers the highest score on this ground.

49.6 overs (1 Run) Was that a chance? A single nonetheless for Australia to end the innings! Siraj goes short this time, a bit slower, at the batter, Pat Cummins goes for the pull but gets a top edge. The ball lobs behind the wicket where KL Rahul dives forward but fails to cling on. The ball pops out of the gloves and the batters run a single. Australia end up with 352 on the board!

49.5 overs (2 Runs) 350 comes up for Australia! Nails the yorker, on middle and leg, Pat Cummins creates room and jams it out in the vacant mid-wicket region for two runs more.

49.4 overs (2 Runs) Slanting in, at the batter, on a length, Pat Cummins clears his front leg and swings across the line. Miscues his shot in front of deep backward square leg for two runs more.

49.3 overs (1 Run) Pulls his length back a bit and serves it on off, Mitchell Starc looks to turn it on the leg side. Gets an inside edge onto his pads and the ball drops on the off side for a single.

49.2 overs (0 Run) Angling away, on a good length, outside off, Mitchell Starc hangs back and drills it straight back to the bowler.

49.1 overs (1 Run) Low full toss, at the stumps, Pat Cummins swats it to deep backward square leg and takes a single.

Mitchell Starc is the new batter in.

48.6 overs (0 Run) OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Jasprit Bumrah gets his reward for some smart bowling! Keeps it on a length, near the tramline on off, slower as well, Marnus Labuschagne moves across to the off side and swings through the line to go down the ground. He has to generate pace and ends up holding out to Shreyas Iyer at long on who does the rest. Marnus Labuschagne would have wanted to bat through but has done his job.

48.5 overs (2 Runs) Yet another off pace delivery, outside off, Marnus Labuschagne shuffles in the crease and lofts it over extra cover for a couple of runs more.

48.4 overs (0 Run) Excellent! Another slower delivery, fuller in length, Marnus Labuschagne stays leg side of the ball and tries to carve it on the off side but misses.

48.3 overs (1 Run) Keeps it away from the batter again, slower delivery and on a length, outside off, Pat Cummins toe-ends his shot towards extra cover and runs a single.

48.2 overs (1 Run) Loopy delivery, low full toss, outside off, Marnus Labuschagne slices it wide of extra cover and takes a single.

48.1 overs (0 Run) Takes pace off again and bowls it on a length, on the tramline on off, Marnus Labuschagne walks across to paddle it away but misses.

48.1 overs (1 Run) WIDE! Serves a slower delivery, full and near the tramline on off, Marnus Labuschagne reaches out to go through the off side. The umpire deems it was beyond the tramline and signals a wide.

47.6 overs (0 Run) On a yorker length, on middle, Pat Cummins digs it out back to the bowler.

47.5 overs (1 Run) Low full toss, at the pads, Marnus Labuschagne helps it down to fine leg and takes a single.

47.4 overs (0 Run) On off and middle, on a length, Marnus Labuschagne tries to go down the ground but mistimes his shot towards mid off.

47.3 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Crunched! Continues to bowl on length, outside off, Marnus Labuschagne backs away and slaps it past extra cover for a boundary.

47.2 overs (1 Run) Angling in, on a length, on middle and leg, Pat Cummins slogs it towards deep mid-wicket where Virat Kohli swoops in and keeps it to a single.

47.1 overs (0 Run) Slower delivery, on a length, over middle and leg, Pat Cummins goes for a heave across the line but connects with thin air. KL Rahul dives to his left and prevents any runs.

46.6 overs (1 Run) Low full toss, on leg, Pat Cummins clips it through mid-wicket and keeps the strike with a single.

46.5 overs (1 Run) Fullish delivery again, slower this time, on off, Marnus Labuschagne eases it in front of backward point and sets off for a quick single. Ravindra Jadeja hurls a wayward throw at the non-striker’s end but it is backed up well.

46.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Excellent placement! Bumrah hurls it at the toes, on a fullish length, Marnus Labuschagne flicks it sweetly and gets it in the gap towards deep backward square leg. Virat Kohli at deep square leg, sprints and puts in a dive to his right but in vain. IND vs AUS: 3rd ODI: Marnus Labuschagne hits Jasprit Bumrah for a 4! AUS 332/6 (46.4 Ov). CRR: 7.11

46.3 overs (0 Run) At the stumps, on a length, Marnus Labuschagne makes room and swats it straight to mid-wicket. Kuldeep Yadav has a shy at the non-striker’s end but does not hit. Would not have mattered anyway as Pat Cummins was in.

46.2 overs (1 Run) Executes the yorker again, on middle and leg, Pat Cummins knocks it to the right of Jasprit Bumrah and takes a single.

46.1 overs (1 Run) Bowls a slower bouncer, on off, Marnus Labuschagne rises and ramps it down to third man for a single.

45.6 overs (1 Run) Full again and slanting in, on leg, Marnus Labuschagne flicks it through square leg and retains the strike with a single.

45.5 overs (2 Runs) Buzzers! Fullish delivery, at the stumps, Marnus Labuschagne clips it off his toes but straight to mid-wicket. The fielder hits the stumps at the non-striker’s end and the ball deflects towards long off, allowing the batters to run two.

45.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Dismissed! Mohammed Siraj rolls his fingers over the ball and bowls it short, on off, Marnus Labuschagne rides on top of the bounce and pulls it in front of square for a boundary. IND vs AUS: 3rd ODI: Marnus Labuschagne hits Mohammed Siraj for a 4! AUS 323/6 (45.4 Ov). CRR: 7.07

45.3 overs (1 Run) Tailing in, on a yorker length, on off, Pat Cummins clears his front leg and jams it out down to long on for a single.

45.2 overs (0 Run) Pace on this time, on a length, on off, Pat Cummins stands tall and pushes it straight to extra cover.

45.1 overs (0 Run) Takes pace off and goes into the wicket, on middle, Pat Cummins sways away and lets the ball pass.

45.1 overs (1 Run) WIDE! Siraj looks to go full but sprays it down leg, Pat Cummins lets it go for a wide.

Right then, that’s all from this game. India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series and will eye a whitewash now. The third and final ODI of the series will take place on Wednesday, the 27th of September, at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. The first ball will be bowled at 1.30 pm IST (8.00 am GMT), but you can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, goodbye and take care!

Shreyas Iyer is the Player of the Match for his brilliant hundred. Says that it was a rollercoaster ride for the last few months but he is feeling good now and credits his friends and family for supporting him in such a tough phase. Adds that he watched the games from his home and just wanted to go out there to perform. Tells that he always believed in his own abilities and he is really happy that everything worked out in this game. Mentions that his plan initially was to play in the V and not complicate things as he was batting brilliantly in the nets, and he backed himself to put away the loose balls as well. Says that he is happy to bat in any spot, whatever the team needs. Further adds that Virat Kohli is one of the best in the game, and he can’t steal that number 3 position from him but there is a lot to learn. Ends by saying he wants to keep the momentum going and maintain the same rhythm.

India’s skipper KL Rahul says that when he saw the wicket in the morning, he did not think it would spin that much. Mentions that having quality spinners in the side does help. Adds that having 400 on the board also helped. Feels that selection is a headache for the coach and Rohit Sharma and whoever gets picked has a job to do. Shares that sitting out can be hard despite scoring runs. Reckons that when you travel every day, it is important to get used to lights. Adds that fielding is related to how fresh you are.

Steven Smith, the captain of Australia says that potentially they could have batted first looking at how the ball was turning later in the game. Praises Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer for their excellent hundreds and also credits KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav for their contributions with the bat. Tells that they like to chase but after the rain, the wicket got a bit sticky and started to spin and it was always going to be challenging chasing 400 but they were a good way off. Mentions that they have now lost a few games, in South Africa and now here and you don’t really want to be going to a big event like this. Says that there are a few things to sort out and once they get there, they know they will be a better side. Further adds that he doesn’t know if they will experiment again but hopes to come back stronger in the next game. Ends by saying that both teams are preparing for the World Cup and India have outplayed them in both games here.

Time for the presentation ceremony…

Earlier in the game, it was Australia’s stand-in skipper Steven Smith who called it right and inserted India into bat. Returning to the side, Josh Hazelwood drew first blood for Australia by getting rid of Ruturaj Gaikwad in his second over. Coming in at number 3, Shreyas Iyer came out all guns firing and was quick to put the pressure back on the Aussie bowlers. Shubman Gill continued his purple patch and got India off to a flying start with Iyer. Both batters notched up entertaining hundreds and, by doing so, took their side to a commanding position. After this 200-run stand was broken, Ishan Kishan played a quickfire cameo before KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav took the innings forward. It was Suryakumar who went into overdrive towards the back end of the innings and remained unbeaten on 72 to propel India close to 400. In what was an off day for their bowlers, Cameron Green ended with two wickets for Australia but was the most expensive bowler.

Having to chase a mammoth total, Australia were off to the worst possible start as they were two down with not much on the board. David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne kept the scoreboard ticking by pouncing on the loose deliveries offered by the Indians. The game’s second rain interruption came at the most inopportune time for Australia, as the loss of two wickets meant that the revised target was 317 in 33 overs. With his ambidexterity, Warner went on to reach fifty, but the same approach led to his downfall. In what was a bizarre LBW dismissal, Warner failed to recognize that he had gotten a bottom edge and decided not to review. Who knows, had he reviewed, things might well have panned out differently for Australia. With a mountain to climb, the rest of the batters had to go for their shots as well and perished at regular intervals in doing so. At 140-8, it seemed to be all over for visitors but Sean Abbott and Josh Hazlewood decided to have some fun with a 77-run stand. Abbott’s swashbuckling fifty was one of the positives for Australia in what was a disappointing loss for them.

After an outstanding effort with the bat, India needed to back it up, and they certainly did that too in a dominating fashion. Playing in place of Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for this game, Prasidh Krishna wasted no time in making an impression. The lanky seamer dismissed Matthew Short on his second ball before nipping Steven Smith for a golden duck. The Indian seamers were unable to keep the pressure on as they bowled a bit too short and allowed the Aussie batters to free their arms. The rain break allowed the hosts to regroup and assess their plans, which they indeed did. Post-resumption, Ravichandran Ashwin was given the ball from one end, and with his guile and deception, he dismantled the Australian middle order. His spin partner, Ravindra Jadeja, got into the wicket-taking act and used the favourable conditions to his advantage to pile more misery on Australia. Towards the end, complacency crept in with a few lapses in the field which allowed the tail to wag. Mohammad Shami broke the annoying stand before Ravindra Jadeja castled Sean Abbott to complete the formalities.

India seal the series with another comprehensive victory! KL Rahul’s men trounce Australia with a convincing margin of 99 runs. This victory ensures that the Men in Blue will enter the ODI World Cup as the top-ranked ODI side. On the other hand, Australia have been outplayed with both bat and ball here in Indore, and this series loss has come as a dent in their preparations for the upcoming mega event.

Right then, Australia have posted a fighting total on the board, but their bowlers will need to be absolutely on point to stop the hosts. India will be confident that they have enough quality in their ranks to gun this total down and take an early lead in the series. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

The man of the moment for India, Mohammad Shami, is in for a chat. He says that the pacers enjoy each other’s success. Adds that this is the result of them spending the last 7-8 years together. Reckons that with the new ball, he has the responsibility of setting the tempo. Feels that there was not much help from the surface and hence, it was important to use the cutters.

India, on the other hand, was very good with the ball and KL Rahul utilised his assets well but he will be a bit disappointed with his keeping in this game. They played with only five bowlers but that did not affect them that much. Mohammad Shami set the tone by getting rid of Mitchell Marsh early and when the hosts needed a breakthrough, it was him again who dismissed Steven Smith. However, Shreyas Iyer will think that if he hadn’t dropped David Warner then they could have restricted the Aussies to a lower total. Ravindra Jadeja got the big wicket of Warner while Ravichandran Ashwin on his comeback got the in-form Marnus Labuschagne which helped India gain control of this game. At the death, they did concede a few boundaries, but Shami ran through the lower middle order of the visitors and registered a fine five-for while Shardul Thakur remained the only one without a wicket in this game.

Australia struggled initially and losing Mitchell Marsh in the very first over did not help either. Steven Smith wasn’t able to find his timing right but David Warner looked good and played more freely after getting a life as he went on to register a nice half-century but got out just after which shifted the momentum a bit. They added 94 runs together but the visitors failed to build long partnerships after that as both Smith and Marnus Labuschagne couldn’t convert their starts into a big score. Despite their long batting order, they were not that aggressive and it looked like they went into a shell. Cameron Green also got a start but a huge mix-up in the middle with Josh Inglis cost him his wicket. However, a 62-run stand between Inglis and Marcus Stoinis towards the end of the innings took Australia to a competitive score.

A quality bowling performance from India! Mohammad Shami led from the front with a brilliant five-wicket haul which is also the first by any Indian bowler against the Aussies on home soil that helped the hosts restrict Australia to 276. The visitors will be a bit unhappy as looking at their team, they would have hoped for something around or over 300, but their bowlers will like this challenge against this top opposition.

49.6 overs (2 Runs) OUT! RUN OUT! Australia have been bowled out on the last ball of their innings! Shardul Thakur bowls full and near the tramline on off, Pat Cummins makes room and has to reach out for the delivery. Carves it towards deep point where Suryakumar Yadav relays the back towards Ravindra Jadeja. The latter fails to pick it up cleanly and the batters think of stealing a third. Jadeja recovers well and fires an accurate throw to KL Rahul at the batting end, who takes the bails off calmly to catch Adam Zampa well short of his crease. Australia end up with 276 on the board!

49.5 overs (2 Runs) Executes the yorker, at the toes, Pat Cummins jams it out towards the vacant mid-wicket region and calls for two immediately. Ravichandran Ashwin from square leg is late to set off and does not hurl the best of throws towards the bowler. Two runs taken rather comfortably.

49.4 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Pat Cummins finds the fence again! Shardul Thakur once again pitches this one up around off, Pat Cummins backs away a bit and smacks it through covers for a boundary. IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: Pat Cummins hits Shardul Thakur for a 4! AUS 272/9 (49.4 Ov). CRR: 5.48

49.3 overs (0 Run) An appeal for caught-behind, but turned down! KL Rahul goes for the review! This is full and outside off, Pat Cummins throws his bat at it but misses as Rahul collects it. However, UltraEdge shows no bat involved and it is Not Out. India lose their review!

49.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Deft touch! Shardul Thakur bowls this right in the blackhole, on off, Pat Cummins opens the face of the bat just in time and squeezes it towards the third man fence for a boundary. IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: Pat Cummins hits Shardul Thakur for a 4! AUS 268/9 (49.2 Ov). CRR: 5.43

49.1 overs (1 Run) Back of a length, on middle, Adam Zampa tucks it towards deep square leg and gets off strike.

Shardul Thakur to bowl the last over. He has conceded 65 runs in his nine overs.

48.6 overs (6 Runs) SIX! Up, up and away! Mohammad Shami serves this full and in the slot, on middle, Pat Cummins clears his front leg away and smokes it way over the long on fence for a biggie. IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: It's a SIX! Pat Cummins hits Mohammad Shami. AUS 263/9 (49.0 Ov). CRR: 5.37

48.5 overs (1 Run) On a yorker length, on middle, Adam Zampa gets his bat down in time and jams it out to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Adam Zampa is the last man in.

48.4 overs (0 Run) OUT! DRAGGED ON! Five-wicket haul for Mohammad Shami! Bowls yet another off cutter, on a good length, on off, Sean Abbott gives himself room to slap it through the off side. Swings his bat a bit too hard and ends up chopping the ball back onto the stumps. Sham is delighted and so he should be. Australia continue to lose wickets towards the backend.

48.3 overs (2 Runs) At the stumps, full in length, Sean Abbott drives it hard and back past the bowler for a couple of runs.

Sean Abbott comes out to the middle now.

48.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! TAKEN! Mohammad Shami rolls his fingers over the ball and serves it on middle, on a good length, Matthew Short waits for the ball to arrive and swats it across the line. Does not get the elevation and hits it flat and straight down the throat of deep mid-wicket where Suryakumar Yadav does the rest. Shami has four now, can he finish with a five-wicket haul? IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: WICKET! Matthew Short c Suryakumar Yadav b Mohammad Shami 2 (4b, 0x4, 0x6). AUS 254/8 (48.2 Ov). CRR: 5.26

48.1 overs (1 Run) Full and on middle, Pat Cummins backs away and drills it down to long on for a single.

47.6 overs (0 Run) Takes pace once more, on a length, Matthew Short swings across the line, only to connect with thin air.

47.5 overs (1 Run) In the air…but safe! Pace off again, on a length, outside off, Pat Cummins tries to go down the ground but gets undone by the lack of pace. Skies it high in the air but luckily for him, the ball drops right between backtracking Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer sprinting in from extra cover.

47.4 overs (1 Run) Fullish delivery, on middle, Matthew Short squeezes it out to long on for a single.

47.3 overs (1 Run) Another off pace delivery, short and on off, Pat Cummins dabs it towards backward point and opens his account with a single. Jadeja wanted to have a shy at the stumps but Bumrah instructed him not to.

Pat Cummins is the next man in.

47.2 overs (0 Run) OUT! CAUGHT! Jasprit Bumrah gets into the wicket-taking act now! Australia are losing their way as they have now lost both set batters. Bumrah hurls another off cutter, back of a length, outside off, Josh Inglis reaches out to go through the off side but does not read the change of pace. Gets foxed and plays his shot way too early. Ends up lobbing it tamely towards extra cover where Shreyas Iyer completes the easies of catches. Bumrah has his first wicket and Australia are now 7 down. IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: WICKET! Josh Inglis c Shreyas Iyer b Jasprit Bumrah 45 (45b, 3x4, 2x6). AUS 250/7 (47.2 Ov). CRR: 5.28

47.1 overs (0 Run) Bowls a off cutter, on a length, outside off, Josh Inglis goes for the reverse paddle but it does not come off.

46.6 overs (1 Run) Just outside off, on a length, Josh Inglis dabs it to the left of backward point and gets across for a quick single. Jadeja throws at the batting end but does not hit.

46.5 overs (1 Run) Lands it on the off stump line, on a good length, Matthew Short pushes it towards extra without any foot movement. Takes a single and opens his account in ODI cricket.

Matthew Short comes out to the middle now on his debut.

46.4 overs (0 Run) OUT! CLEANED HIM UP! Mohammad Shami has the last laugh as he gets his man eventually! Continues to bowl from over the wicket and bowls straight at the stumps, on a length, a hint of tail in, Marcus Stoinis clears his front leg and goes for a mighty heave across the line. He misses it altogether and sees his woodwork rattled. Australia needed Stoinis to bat through but he departs in his quest to take Shami on.

46.3 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Powered down the ground! In the slot by Mohammad Shami, on middle, Marcus Stoinis stays put and with a still head, thumps it back over the umpire’s head for four more runs. IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: Marcus Stoinis hits Mohammad Shami for a 4! AUS 248/5 (46.3 Ov). CRR: 5.33

46.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Innovation at it’s best! Shami looks to bowl on a yorker length but serves a low full toss, on middle, Marcus Stoinis shuffles to the off side and paddles it well wide of short fine leg for a boundary. IND vs AUS: 1st ODI: Marcus Stoinis hits Mohammad Shami for a 4! AUS 244/5 (46.2 Ov). CRR: 5.27

46.1 overs (2 Runs) 2 Leg byes! Bowls it at the pads, on a good length, Marcus Stoinis tries to help it away by using the pace of the ball. The ball drops in the vacant backward square leg region off his pads for a couple of leg byes.

45.6 overs (0 Run) Nails the yorker, on middle, Josh Inglis gets his bat down in time and digs it out back to the bowler.

45.5 overs (2 Runs) Strays down leg, on a good length, Josh Inglis gets inside the line and tickles it to the left of fine leg. Comes back for the second run with ease. Good running!

45.4 overs (0 Run) Back of a length on this occasion, outside off, Josh Inglis looks to get on top of the bounce to punch it through the off side. Miscues it towards backward square leg.

45.3 overs (0 Run) Takes pace off and bowls an off cutter, on a length, on the off stump line, Josh Inglis has a swipe across the line but gets undone by the lack of pace. Gets an inside edge onto his pads and the ball rolls behind the wicket.

Supreme Court has prepared a ‘platform’ to assess ‘top’ 50 judges before appointment in the apex court: CJI

Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Friday said the apex court with a young team of distinguished scholars, interns and law researchers had prepared a “broad platform” to assess every one of the “top 50 judges” in the country who would be considered for appointment as judges of the Supreme Court. “One of the criticisms about the collegium system is that we have no factual data to evaluate people whom we are considering for appointment to the Supreme Court,” Chief Justice Chandrachud noted. Wrong to assess economic activity on GDP alone: Finance Ministry

The Finance Ministry on September 15 scotched aspersions cast by “certain sections” on the credibility of Indian GDP data, which showed a 7.8% uptick in the first quarter of this year, stressing that Indian GDP data is not seasonally adjusted and is finalised three years later so “it is wrong to look at the underlying economic activity based on GDP indicators alone”. “Ideally, critics would have done well to look at several other growth indicators to see if other data match their conclusions. Purchasing Managers’ Indices indicate that the manufacturing and services sectors are growing. Bank credit growth is in double digits. Consumption is improving, and the government has vigorously ramped up capital expenditure,” the Ministry said in a long post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Premadasa Stadium here. Mustafizur Rahman took three wickets, including two in the penultimate over including the crucial one of Axar to derail India’s victory march.

North Korea’s Kim gets a close look at Russian fighter jets as his tour narrows its focus to weapons

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un peered into the cockpit of Russia’s most advanced fighter jet as he toured an aircraft factory Friday on an extended trip that has raised concerns about banned weapons transfer deals between the increasingly isolated countries. Since entering Russia aboard his armored train on Tuesday, Mr. Kim has met President Vladimir Putin and visited weapons and technology sites, underscoring deepening ties between the two nations locked in separate confrontations with the West. Foreign governments and experts speculate Mr. Kim will likely supply ammunition to Russia for its war efforts in Ukraine in exchange for receiving advanced weapons or technology from Russia.
