Box office 2022: After The Kashmir Files, Uunchai earns more on Monday than its opening day :Bollywood Box Office – Bollywood Hungama

Sooraj Barjatya’s Uunchai achieved a rare feat at the box office on Monday by earning more than what it did on its opening day. After scoring Rs. 1.81 crores on Friday, the film saw a hike in numbers on Monday as it amassed Rs. 1.88 crores, which is a 3.87% hike.

For those not in the know, generally movies go through a fall in numbers on Monday as compared to what they earn on their opening day. That’s the reason why the first Monday is often funnily referred to as ‘Khooni Monday.’

Uunchai, which stars Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani and Parineeti Chopra, has succeeded in doing this because of the positive word-of-mouth and reviews.

The producers Rajshri Productions also used an old strategy of releasing the film only in a limited number of screens (483) on Friday and gradually increased them from the second day onwards with the increase in demand. This is also a major reason for the film’s good performance on its first Monday.

The only other original Hindi films to achieve a similar feat in 2022 include The Kashmir Files, Khuda Hafiz: Chapter II – Agni Pariksha, Badhaai Do, Laal Singh Chaddha and the Hindi version of Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.

Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files holds the number one position in the list by a huge margin. The Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumaar, Pallavi Joshi and Chinmay Mandlekar-starrer opened at a decent Rs. 3.55 crore. But the film’s numbers saw a humongous jump on its first Monday as it collected Rs. 15.05 crore. It’s a staggering growth of 323%. In fact, this is an all-time record for a first Monday.

The Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha is the surprise entry in the list since the film turned out to be a disaster at the box office. The official remake of the Hollywood classic Forrest Gump saw a 8.4% gain on its first Monday (Rs 7.87 crore) as compared to its opening figure of Rs 7.26 crore. However, the Monday jump wasn’t organic since it was a big Independence Day holiday.

Similarly, Khuda Haafiz: Chapter II – Agnipariksha has acquired the second place in the 2022 list because of the same reason. Starring Vidyut Jammwal in the lead, the movie opened at Rs 1.31 crores on Friday. It saw a hike in numbers on Monday as it made Rs 1.70 crore simply because it was a national holiday for the festival of Eid-ul-Azha.

The Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar-starrer Badhaai Do also had a hike in numbers on Monday (Rs 1.85 crores) than its Friday number of Rs 1.65 crores because of Valentine’s Day. Although it’s not a big festival in India, the day is celebrated by a section of the audience in the country.

The gain of 4.8% for R Madhavan’s Rocketry on its first Monday is attributed to the positive response for its content.

However out of the six films achieving this feat in 2022, only The Kashmir Files and Uunchai have proved to be successful with the latter still having a long way to go before completing its box office journey. Interestingly, Anupam Kher plays a pivotal role in both the movies.

Not a single Hindi movie achieved this feat in the last two years largely because cinema halls were shut for a substantial period because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rainn Wilson announces name change to raise climate change awareness | CNN

CNN
 —

Rainn Wilson has “changed” his name and is inviting others to do the same.

“The Office” actor debuted “Rainnfall Heat Wave Rising Sea Levels Wilson” on social media Thursday as a way to raise awareness about the climate control crisis.

“As a cheap little stunt to help save planet Earth, I’ve changed my name on Twitter, Instagram and even on my fancy writing paper,” he said in a video he shared on his verified social media accounts.

In the Twitter thread that included the video, Wilson added that he was unable to change his name on Twitter “… because Elon,” referencing guidelines implemented on the platform by new owner Elon Musk.

Wilson encouraged his followers to visit environmental advocacy group Arctic Basecamp’s “Arctic Name Changer” to get their own names to be used on their social media profiles in the hopes of capturing the attention of the world leaders assembling in Egypt for the COP27 international climate change conference.

“And if enough of us do this, then maybe @cop27_egypt will be where our world leaders sit up and notice Arctic risks and introduce a solution,” he tweeted. “Make Arctic Name Changer a Game Changer!”

5 Most Sensible Hollywood Movies of All Time – Movierdo

Sensible movies have always had their place in all film industries since the dawn of film industry. Hollywood has always been a pioneer in giving the most sensible movies to the world. Here is a list of some of the must watch Hollywood movies that relatable to the title.

Titanic

This movie tops the list since it has captured all dimensions of human life. It’s not only a normal love story as everyone think. The movie has much more to talk about than love. It captures accurately the life of an artist and yearns for an exposure. The struggle of a budding artist is exposed through his words and is seen through his eyes. It also stands as a favourite love classic of all times. Not only the main characters, even the love story between an old couple is portrayed with such fineness and perfection. The care taken to sculpt each scene has made the movie win an Oscar and the hearts of millions. The emotions and reality are woven with each other that made it to be a masterpiece.

Brooklyn

This movie being ranked as one of the 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century by BBC has a wonderful story and screenplay. The depiction of the original life of Irish people and their customs is so precise that it was widely celebrated across Ireland. The deepest desires of a woman who wants a perfect life and her desperate need for motherly love which may seem to be available but without an understanding which is still prevailing among people is shown. This movie throws light upon a woman’s extended world which she’s free to choose according to her need. The screenplay and cast are the great strengths to the movie’s huge success both economically and critically.

Salt

Salt is known to be an action thriller movie featuring Angelina Jolie but only while critically watching one may notice that it’s a movie spun with the thread of love and patriotism. The beginning may not give many details but as we keenly notice the desires and motives of the main character slowly undress themselves. The reason for the sense of patriotism isn’t given clearly but the greatest twist takes place only when she loses the love of her life. The movie truly has a lot of chasing and fighting sequences yet the main emotions of love are the base for the strong storyline and screenplay. This gave the movie a good review and a huge Box office without deceiving Jolie’s fans and critics.

The Handmaid’s Tale

This movie is originally based upon the book “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. Being released after many years after the publication of the book didn’t reduce the reception for the movie. Though some may find this movie to be disgusting it truly expresses the way it would’ve been if the book had been real. A want for freedom and need for individuality is carefully handled by the director without affecting each character. Each character in this movie has its own emotions unlike other movies where only the main characters play a major role. Though the story is too long and hard to understand it pulls the audience into the Republic of Gilead.

Sense and Sensibility

This movie shouldn’t have occupied the last place but due to a very small difference between the movie and the original book by Jane Austen it has reached here. Jane Austen is normally known for her way of capturing humans and a certain topics such as marriage. The movie clearly depicts the life of three sisters in absolute poverty. The movie focuses mainly on the life of these three girls and their never ending dreams. Austen would have aimed at the marriage of these 3 girls in her own style which made the book unique. In the movie the life of these girls were focused more in another style. All the characters were a strong pillar to the movie which helped to achieve the dreamt results.

Amy Schumer put some heat on friend Kim Kardashian‘s ex Kanye West and his controversial anti-semitic comments. The comedian, 41, made the reference to the Chicago born rapper while discussing her husband Chris Fischer, 42, who is is on the spectrum. “My husband has autism spectrum disorder — it used to be called Asperger’s — then they found Dr. Asperger had Nazi ties…Kanye,” she said quietly on the Nov. 5 episode as she looked at her mic and said, “that’s weird.” She then said, “Isn’t that crazy?”

During the monologue, she also joked that it had become awkward to have sex with him Chris to the fact he’s her “spouse” and now “family” — effectively, she explained, her “emergency contact.” She married Gene back in 2018.

“My husband and I do have a good sex life. We have found the best weekday to have sex is always ‘to-MORROW’. We’re always like, we ate today, we won’t eat tomorrow — we don’t eat tomorrow,” she said on stage after telling the audience her doctors ordered her not to have sex for six weeks after giving birth to son Gene David Fischer, 3 (“more like six years,” she quipped). “It’s awkward having sex with your spouse — it is…I have Thanksgiving with you, I lay out your sweaters — I can’t go down on you, you’re my emergency contact. Sick!” she joked. “We can’t talk dirty to each other, we know each other too well.”

Amy also popped up in a Bachelorette inspired sketch that included surprise cameos by Chris RockJessie WilliamsJohn CenaChase Crawford, and Tyler Cameron!

“I have no doubt in my mind that my husband is in this room. In fact, I wish I could marry each and every one of you but that would be way too many husbands,” Kim said to the group. Instead of picking one of the male suitors, however, Kim revealed she had fallen for one of the show’s producers: Amy! “This might be against the rules but I really connected with one of the producers on the show. Amy S!” she declared. “Even though I’ve never dated a woman before, I feel…” Kim began as Amy also expressed her feelings back.

Rosa Short Film Review

★★

Directed by: #BijanKarim

Starring: #AldenDoyle, #KellenJackson, #SuchitraVanRielBarrett

Short Film Review by: Alexandra James

Rosa is a short film about 3 friends, Adrian, Kyra, and Rosa. However, Rosa has faded away, where to and how is not exactly clear. The audience are left in a state of confusion in terms of the time frame of this. However, Rosa’s disappearance has left Adrian and Kyra in a state of loneliness and uncertainty, especially in terms of love and their feelings towards one another. Director Bijan Karim explores the vulnerability of the characters and how loss can often draw people closer together, but this can also bring forth complications such as guilt or betrayal. It is sometimes difficult to separate that need for comfort and actual love. This certainly seems to be the case between Adrian and Kyra, a mixture of emotions combined with young naivety leads to an uneasy relationship between the two.

The story begins with Kyra and Adrian alone in the woods together sharing a personal moment, they smoke weed and Adrian shares how he cut his hand. They then spend the night together in the forest, a quiet spot where Kyra escapes to so that she can be alone but has now chosen to share this space with Adrian. The location here was beautiful, the crystal-clear river flowing, the deep greens of the overhanging trees as well as the isolated feel of the forest itself was truly captivating and picturesque.

There is chemistry between the two characters, but it appears very repressed at times as if they are unwilling to share their true feelings towards each other and perhaps Rosa is at the source of this emotional distance. However, this is not entirely clear, the storyline is often missing pieces of information which would help to patch together the narrative. The film needed to provide detail surrounding the characters so that the audience can understand the relationship between them and their missing friend so that we can fully digest this piece. The facts do not need to be explicitly told and spelled out to the audience; however, some background information would have encouraged more of a fascination with the characters and their lives from the audience perspective.

It was difficult to understand a lot of the dialogue throughout this short, sound was an element which could have been improved as the background noise whether this be wind, trees or traffic buried the voice of the actors which in turn made some scenes hard to follow. Sound is crucial as the audience need to focus on the words, meaning, tone, and delivery as this allows us to establish the relationship or connection between the characters. This would be something to develop upon to help aid the storyline and for it to flow a lot smoother.

14 Super Engrossing Movies Like Wolf Of Wall Street

The controversial and wildly successful The Wolf of Wall Street from Martin Scorsese is the kind of film that keeps you on the edge. It is based on a 500+ page memoir of Jordan Belfort, a former stockbroker and a financial criminal. He pleaded guilty and spent 22 months in prison for fraud and money laundering schemes. The book chronicles in detail the decadent lifestyle of Belfort and his fellow corrupt stockbrokers. Belfort reigned his company like a cult leader, manipulating and baiting his enthusiastic band of brokers with money, power, drugs and sex.

Played remarkably by Leonardo DiCaprio, Belfort meticulously captures the mindset of an insatiable, young, wayward stockbroker’s financial shenanigans. The adaptation does dangerously straddle the lines between satirizing the American corporate culture and glorifying bad behavior. At the same time, Scorsese provides some interesting social subtext lacking in Belfort’s memoir. Excessive in style and unbridled in its approach, it makes for an insanely thrilling ride. Martin Scorsese’s signature style of freeze-frames, long tracking shots and voice-over-narration make this film a true classic for all cinema lovers. So, if you enjoy films that make you say ‘This Guy!,’ you might enjoy our list:

Movies Like Wolf Of Wall Street

14. The Founder (2016)

John Lee Hancock’s biographical film, The Founder chronicles the story of Ray Kroc played by Michael Keaton. It narrates how Ray the traveling salesman made McDonald’s into the fast-food giant it is today. While The Founder shows that Ray brought the idea of franchise to McDonald, it is not the truth in real-life. McDonald brothers already had 20 franchises before offering the US franchise rights to Ray.

A dark and at times an inspiring tale of the American Dream, The Founder puts to light how no corporate elite made it where they are today without stomping on a few people along the way. The film features strong performances from Michael Keaton, Nick Offerman and John Carrol Lynch, who play Richard and Maurice McDonald. Like Belfort in Wolf of Wall Street, it’s hard to root for Keaton’s Ray Kroc whose triumph comes from the ruin and misery of many. And the film is unabashed, unapologetic in portraying this side of his character.

13. Boiler Room (2000)

Ben Younger’s Boiler Room is a story about a college dropout who lands a job at an investment firm as a broker. Seth (Giovanni Ribisi) bears a striking resemblance to Belfort and the film chronicles his life and how he succumbs to power and greed. This movie set the template for films like The Wolf of Wall Street and gave its audience a look into the murky side of the sharply dressed men working at a high stake job. Boiler Room sees solid performances from the likes of Vin Diesel and Scott Caan and an appearance from Ben Affleck. It appears to be an authentic, honest portrayal of life at Wall Street, eventually highlighting how everything in life comes at a cost.

In one scene Jim (Ben Affleck) sneers at the new recruiters, asking them if they’ve seen Glengarry Glen Ross and as it turns out, they all have. They are all following a culture that is precarious, to say the least.

12. Thank You For Smoking (2005)

movies like wolf of Wall Street

Jason Reitman’s Thank You For Smoking features an unlikeable central character like Jordan Belfort. The film is based on a novel by Christopher Buckley. Played by Aaron Eckhart, Nick Naylor works as the lobbyist and spokesman for the American tobacco industry. Nick is an impressive spin-doctor who can sell his lies to anyone. The central story revolves around a congressional hearing as a senator oversees a campaign to put skull-and-crossbones image on every manufactured cigarette package.

The tobacco industry worries how such initiatives will impact its profit. Moreover, a hearing at the senate would bring negative press to the industry. And so, enters Nick to deal with both the problems. Like Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street, Reitman’s film works as a smart satire on the American Dream. Beneath its dark humor, the narrative also withholds a simple yet hard-hitting emotional core. The film features an excellent supporting cast including J.K. Simmons and William H. Macy.

11. Margin Call (2011)

We see the same high-stakes universe of unscrupulous, maniacal stockbrokers in this J.C. Chandor’s movie, like in Wolf of Wall Street. Featuring an Oscar-nominated original screenplay by Chandor, the story takes place on the brink of the 2007–2008 financial crisis. It unfolds over a 24-hour period and is largely set inside the sterile, vast office surroundings. Risk management experts at a Lehman Brothers-like firm uncover a crisis that could devastate Wall Street and trigger economic instability across the nation.

Margin Call deals with a very complicated subject. But the smart screenplay gives us a lot of insights about the industry’s ethical and moral corruption. The biggest strength of Margin Call, however, is the intense performances from a great ensemble cast. This includes heavyweight performers like Jeremy Irons, Paul Bettany, Kevin Spacey, and Stanley Tucci. No single actor tries to outshine the other, they all come together to effortlessly inhabit their roles and elevate the film.

10. Arbitrage (2012)

Nicholas Jarecki’s sleek, Hitchcockian thriller Arbitrage tracks down the personal and professional crisis in the life of a high-profile hedge fund magnate. Richard Gere plays the handsome and tragic hero Robert Miller. Miller is a tremendously wealthy man, blessed with a loving wife and a large family. He is celebrating his 60th birthday and might soon retire from the hedge-fund business. Soon though, we uncover his buried secrets that threaten to topple his wealth and fame.

Though financial crimes are difficult to break down in a film narrative, Jarecki does a fine job making us understand the cost of Miller’s crime. Simultaneously, Miller’s personal crisis adds more tension to the proceedings. Gere’s Miller is as much a professional liar as Belfort. They’re both power-hungry mobsters, who keep up appearances for the outside world, but smoothly swindle their clients and cover up their crimes.

9. Trainspotting (1996)

It’s crucual to watch Danny Boyle’s hard-hitting British drama which like Wolf of Wall Street also deals with the subject of addiction. On the outset, Trainspotting is a movie about substance abuse, which intimately focuses on the sheer chaos such addiction brings upon an individual’s life. The reckless lifestyle of its characters and the dark humor in this film make for a thoughtful movie experience. One of the most well received movies from the 90s, Trainspotting is a story about Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), a drug addict who wants to get clean but fails to do so due to the company he’s in.

The film is a fine commentary on what happens to an addict once the ‘fun’ wears off and the emptiness sets in. Trainspotting is packed with dark humor and lively characters and anyone who is a fan of The Wolf of Wall Street would find the film hugely entertaining.

8. Catch Me If You Can (2002)

movies like wolf of Wall Street

Leonardo DiCaprio is in absolute top form in this Steven Spielberg classic. A game of cat and mouse ensues between Carl, an FBI agent (Tom Hanks) and Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio) as the latter forges identities and swindles millions of dollars. A riveting narrative engages viewers as they eagerly await to find out who comes out on top. Similar to the end of The Wolf of Wall Street, law finally catches up to Frank but it isn’t nearly as bad and is, as a matter of fact, a satisfying one. Frank lands on the right side of the law and builds a successful career as an expert on bank fraud and forgery. DiCaprio is at his breezy best. He along with Tom Hanks make this worth your while.

Much like Jordan Belfort, Frank is unapologetic about owning up to his mistakes and doesn’t hide away behind lousy excuses. Both lead lives of excess and immorality. Spielberg, much like Scorsese, infuses his character with stylistic flourishes, hooking the viewers throughout to these characters as they go about evading law and all sense of morality.

7. Wall Street (1987)

Oliver Stone’s Wall Street is clearly one of the most prominent films set around the murky, manipulative dealings inside the financial world. Michael Douglas’ Gordon Gekko is a man with power to manipulate and maneuver people through his words. It’s interesting how the theme of the film holds relevance to this day. It throws light on the predatory trading mentality that exists in the Capitalist paradise of Wall Street.

The viewer really gets an insight into the character of Gordon Gekko as he delivers his now famous monologue about greed and power. His powerful, intimidating voice conveys how far he’s strayed from all things moral. He doesn’t hesitate going all out for what he wants and for a second even manages to convince viewers that there is no shame in having a little bit of greed. Michael Douglas is phenomenal in this role and fittingly won an Academy Award for Best Actor. If you’ve enjoyed The Wolf of Wall Street, add this one to your watchlist.

6. The Big Short (2015)

Chronicling the events of the 2008 financial crisis, Adam McKay’s The Big Short is a good blend of both comedy and drama. The story follows a group of investors who predict the collapse of the US economy and how they bet against the mortgage market making millions of dollars along the way. It’s not all hunky dory though as the situation spirals quickly out of hand which could spell grave consequences.

Similar to Jordan Belfort, the characters in The Big Short directly address the audience directly address the audience and economist Richard Thaler goes so far as to explain the concept of subprime mortgages and synthetic collateralized debt obligations to the audience by breaking the fourth wall. The film stars Christian Bale who shines through in this film but the rest of the cast which includes the likes of Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell and Brad Pitt also do justice to their respective roles.

5. Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)

One of the most underrated films of the 1990s, David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross boasts a stellar cast with the likes of Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris and Kevin Spacey. The film offers a vivid portrayal of the cut-throat world of Wall Street and gives a remarkable insight into the life of salesmen and a system that nurtures them. The film is based on David Mamet’s Pulitzer winning 1984 play. If you liked Matthew McConaughey’s cameo in The Wolf of Wall Street, we bet you’ll love Alec Baldwin’s cameo in this one.

Baldwin’s Blake is a man who means business but his words can come across as downright absurd and at times even funny. Similar to Jordan Belfort, Blake‘s power, presence and mantra can encourage the meekest of individuals. “Coffee’s for closers” has now become an iconic dialogue and this film is definitely worth watching if you like The Wolf of Wall Street.

4. La Dolce Vita (1960)

Italian auteur Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita is considered as one of the great masterpieces of modern cinema. The iconic image of Anita Ekberg in a Roman fountain and the melancholic Marcello Mastroianni have found their place in the cinematic history’s hall of fame. The film unfolds in the form of vignettes as we follow the hedonistic, dysfunctional life of a socialite and celebrity journalist named Marcello Rubini. Fellini offers a rich visual experience, while capturing the freewheeling lifestyle of the members of a high society.

The filmmaker’s criticism of the overpowering emptiness within such an elite community is much nuanced. Fellini explores the moral decay and exposes the falsehoods of stardom. Martin Scorsese has always championed La Dolce Vita and Fellini’s body of work. In fact, Scorsese’s look at toxic cultural mindset amidst the Wall Street stockbrokers was chiefly influenced by Fellini’s aesthetic sense.

3. Casino (1995)

movies like wolf of wall street

Boasting dazzling performances from Robert de Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone, Casino is often overlooked in comparison to Goodfellas and Taxi Driver. But it’s one of Scorsese’s finest films. A tale of greed, power and loyalty, Casino much like The Wolf of Wall Street follows the gradual downfall of a corrupted individual. Neither Ace (De Niro) nor Belfort could exist if most people they deal with weren’t hopeful. But unlike Belfort, Ace isn’t here to make anyone’s dream come true but his own. A highly intense, fast-paced film Casino like The Wolf of Wall Street is full of immorality and dynamic characters which make for a fun viewing. Ace’s troubled wife Ginger played by Sharon Stone is also starkly similar to the character of Margot Robbie who plays the wife of Jordan Belfort.

Richly detailed with well written characters, Casino was classic Scorsese gangster drama, with all the Scorsese elements we love — tracking shots, voice-over narration, freeze frames and kickass jazz/rock soundtracks.

2. The Social Network (2010)

movies like wolf of Wall Street

Based on Ben Mezrich’s Accidental Billionaire, Social Network by David Fincher is a tale of success, friendship, greed, and betrayal. Aaron Sorkin’s solid script finds the right dramatic structure to narrate the rise and rise of Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of social media giant Facebook. Played to perfection by Jesse Eisenberg, the film revolves around two law-suits filed against Zuckerberg by his friend and former employers respectively. The depositions gradually take us to the past, tracking down Zuckerberg’s journey from a Harvard University graduate to a shrewd businessman.

Similar to Wolf of Wall Street, Social Network is a detailed study of bad behavior in the corporate culture. Bolstered by Sorkin’s energetic rapid-fire dialogue and Fincher’s assured direction, the narrative dives deep into the psychology of mellow and well-to-do individuals. Critics have hailed Social Network as a story about the unattainable American Dream, further drawing comparisons with masterpieces like Citizen Kane (1941) and There Will be Blood (2007).

1. Goodfellas (1990)

Possibly the greatest crime drama film ever made, Martin Scorsese’s magnum opus is probably the most similar film to his 2013 effort both stylistically and thematically. Full of fast-cut editing and quick-paced narration, the cult classic sees career best performances from Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. Another Scorsese film which involves voice-over narration, Goodfellas is a tale of Henry Hill, a member of the mob who quickly rises to prominence on the mean streets of New York. The similarities between Henry Hill and Jordan Belfort are apparent even to the most casual of viewers and it almost seems Scorsese relied on the same two decade old tropes and techniques of his to make The Wolf of Wall Street.

Both Henry and Jordan lived a life of crime, spent considerable amounts of time in prison, cheated on their wives, and relied heavily on drugs to function in order to make it through the day. The film uses tracking shots to follow the dark lives that these characters lead, giving viewers a sense of intimate connection with them.

Conclusion

There you go! Hope you enjoy these movies just as much as The Wolf of Wall Street. I’d also recommend Safdie Brother’s Uncut Gems (2019) and Good Time (2017). If you are looking for fast paced, tightly knit storylines with stomach-churning, jaw-dropping twists and turns, these are your films. The best part about The Wolf of Wall Street is that it gets better with each viewing. If you get a chance, go watch the film again and you might figure out how to sell that forbidden pen after all.

‘House of the Dragon’: Author George RR Martin wanted a different starting point for series

The first season of ‘House of the Dragon’, which is based on Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’, ended its 10-episode run recently with a cliffhanger finale

Fire & Blood author George RR Martin has said that he had suggested a different point in his novel to start the story for the House of the Dragon series. The author said this during an exclusive interview with fellow fantasy writer David Anthony Durham for Penguin Random House.

When asked about the most difficult creative decision in the making of the series, George revealed that the writers had many possibilities for where to begin telling the story of the House of Targaryen.

“One of the writers wanted to begin it later, with Aemma dying. Skip the Great Council, skip the tournament, a scream sounds out, Aemma is dead, that’s where you begin.”

He continued, “That was one possibility. Another of the writers wanted to begin even later than that, with Viserys dying. But what happens there? Then you have to present all that material in flashbacks or dialogue, which becomes challenging, too. But we discussed all these possibilities.”

Revealing what he himself would have preferred the starting point to be, the American author said, “I would’ve begun it like 40 years earlier, with an episode I would’ve called ‘The Heir and the Spare. Jaehaerys’ two sons, Aemon and Baelon, are alive, and we see the friendship but also the rivalry between the two sides of the great house. Then Aemon dies accidentally when a Myrish crossbowman shoots him by accident on Tarth, then Jaehaerys has to decide who becomes the new heir. Is it the daughter of the son who’s just died, or the second son who has children of his own and is a man where she’s a teenager? You could’ve presented all that stuff, but then you would’ve had 40 more years, and even more.”

Ultimately, the TV series begins with the Great Council convened by King Jaehaerys Targaryen to decide whether his heir should be Princess Rhaenys, the daughter of his eldest son, or Prince Viserys, the son of his second son. Martin, who has long experience in film and television, said there’s no right or wrong answer on where to begin. “There are many ways you can approach these things and if you do it well, it can work.”

House of the Dragon, which ended with a cliffhanger finale on October 23, is the prequel to HBO’s hit fantasy series Game of Thrones and is based on Martin’s Fire & Blood novel. The second season of the series is expected to air in 2024.
