From Lootere to Ae Watan Mere Watan, Here are the Top Weekly OTT Releases

This week, we have a piping hot buffet of new digital releases across genres. We have two Indian originals, post-theatrical releases, a high-budget sci-fi saga, and Marvel Studio’s hit series making a return.

One of the major releases of the week is Sara Ali Khan’s Ae Watan Mere Watan which will take you to the pre-Indepence Bombay. Khan is seen playing the celebrated freedom fighter, Usha Mehta. While the gallant leader dedicated her entire life to India, this Amazon Original will take you to the Quit India Movement, when the college-going Usha started an illegal radio station to broadcast messages from prominent leaders from various secret locations.

Next in Line is Hansal Mehta’s Lootere which will revolve around a cargo ship hijacked by Somalian pirates in Africa. The show gives a refreshing break from repetitive plotlines in crime thrillers and will keep you guessing what comes next.

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem is another big-budget release of the week. It offers an impressive cocktail of cultural, social, and scientific conundrums.

Marvel Studios also have a big release in the form of X-Men’ 97 which is a revival of sorts for the long-running hit show, X-Men: The Animated Series. However, whether the show sets the stage for other live adaptations is yet to be confirmed. Another major release by Marvel lined up for release this year is Wolverine & Deadpool.

Besides the ones listed below, Netflix’s biography film Shirley is also a good binge-watch option for the weekend, which brings from the page of American history the rivetting tale of Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to be elected to the United States Congress.

True crime documentary enthusiasts could watch Netflix’s Homicide: New York, in which investigators, officers, and detectives discuss some of the most notorious murder cases.

With that, here are the top OTT releases of the week that we recommend.

Ae Watan Mere Watan

When: Now Streaming

Where: Prime Video

During the Quit India Movement of 1942, a young college student in Bombay recognised the power of radio and started an illegal secret radio station to broadcast messages from Mahatma Gandhi and other prominent leaders across India, with the help of a few amateur radio operators.

While this endeavour lasted only three months, it played an important role in India’s struggle for Independence.

In this biopic, Sara Ali Khan plays the college student Usha Mehta, who later emerged as an important figure in Indian history. The film will tell you in detail how the rebellious freedom fighter started and continued to operate this station from various undisclosed locations and the various challenges she faced.

The fact that she was a Gandhian and her father, a judge under the British Raj, opposed her actions is also portrayed.

Fighter

When: Now Streaming

Where: Netflix

Fighter is a visually striking patriotic drama about a few fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force who have vowed to protect their nation against all threats and dangers. Among these valiant officers are Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Karan Singh Grover and Manushi Chillar, headed by squadron leader Anil Kapoor. Hrithik’s character is a rebel who doesn’t shy away from bending the rules when it comes to justice, an attitude that doesn’t sit well with Anil Kapoor’s squadron leader, putting the two at loggerheads with each other in almost every scene.

If you find yourself amazed at the mannerisms of a few characters coming off as too professional, that’s because those are real-life Indian Air Force cadets bringing a slice of their everyday lives to the silver screen. You’ll also find plenty of references to the 2019 Pulwama attack, the 2019 Balakot airstrike and the 2019 India–Pakistan border skirmishes.

Since Fighter has used the same cinematographic techniques as Dune and other James Bonde movies, it offers plenty of jaw-dropping aerial action sequences, some of which are likely to remind you of Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick.

Lootere

When: Now Streaming

Where: Hotstar

Hansal Mehta’s (Scam 1992) will take you to the Somalian waters where a cargo ship with an Asian crew gets hijacked by Somalian pirates. The ship is owned by Vikrant, a nicotine-addicted businessman of Indian origin who has a lot more on stake than what appears at the surface and is desperately counting on it being retrieved. Rajat Kapoor plays the captain of the ship and delivers a fine performance.

The eight-episode-long show will give you a taste of crime, corruption, and dark secrets harbouring in African waters, with a special focus on Indian businessmen established there for decades. Get ready for thrill, knotty twists, a flavour of dark murkiness of the crime world.

The first two episodes have been released, and the other eight will be out every week. Shot in Hindi, Lootere can also be streamed in Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, and Kannada.

3 Body Problem

When: Now Streaming

Where: Netflix

3 Body Problem is a Sci-Fi drama adapted from Chinese engineer-author Liu Cixin’s novel of the same name, which serves as the first in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy.

The show begins with an astrophysicist witnessing her father’s public execution during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Cut to the future, she is taken to a secret radar base by the military. Meanwhile, in the present, a lot of strange unexplained phenomena are happening – many physicists committing suicide, prominent research being discovered as wrong, and all the stars blinking on and off!

All in all, the show offers plenty of complex scientific problems, cultural challenges, extra-terrestrial dangers, and lots of suspense. The show has been adapted for television by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff, D. B. Weiss and Alexander Woo.

X-MEN ‘97

When: Now Streaming

Where: Hotstar

X-Men ’97 is a spiritual sequence to X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran on air from 1992-1995. The show picks up right after the events of the original series and introduces the viewers to a world where the X-Men leader, Professor X, is no longer in charge – leaving his proteges, Cyclops and Jean Grey, in charge.

The world still somewhat dislikes the mutant X-Men, who are anyway hell-bent on saving the world from all the dangers, irrespective of the bigotry they face on a daily basis.

Many actors from the original series have lent their voices, including Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Alyson Court, Lawrence Bayne, and Ron Rubin. The first two episodes have now been released, while the rest will be out every Wednesday at 12:30 pm IST.

He informed that this serial was commissioned by taking inspiration from the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” national campaign of the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He said that this serial, launched in August 2022, is a story of bravery in India’s freedom struggle about which very few people know. “These are the wars which got lost somewhere in the pages of history”, said the Union I & B Minister. Swaraj is the story of these countless unsung heroes and their indomitable courage, he added.

Elaborating on the series, Shri Thakur said that this series of 75 episodes covers unsung heroes of freedom struggle from all corners of our country. It helps us understand the meaning, origins and consequences of colonialism, said the Minister. He further said, In the past, the history of India was written by foreign invaders and rulers according to their political, ideological and economic interests. In this landmark serial, historical events are presented in a broader context to illustrate the concept of Swaraj, he stated. He added that this will help the national and international audience to understand the spirit of the country and our 500-year-long relentless struggle to gain independence from colonial rulers.

Speaking further on the importance of being proud of one’s own rich history, Shri Thakur said, those who do not take pride in their rich historical legacy can never create a great future. If we want to create a great future for the country, then we will have to instil pride in the young generation about our great history, he added. The Union I & B Minister reiterated that over the next 25 years of Amrit Kaal, under the able leadership of PM Narendra Modi, we will move forward at a greater pace in the direction of ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Reflecting on the role of Prasar Bharati in making this series, the Minister appreciated the role being played by Doordarshan and Akashvani in mobilizing and channelizing the emotions and spirit of the citizens in the right direction from time to time through various memorable programs.

The Minister informed the gathering about a new 52-episode serial Sardar: The Game Changer which was launched by Doordarshan on March 10, 2024, to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Union I & B Minister stated that the Government is focused on being an enabler to help the Media & Entertainment sector thrive and achieve greater heights on an international scale. He highlighted initiatives like Ease of Doing Business for the film industry, schemes like “Single window clearance” for film shooting In India and various other incentives. He urged all to create good content in Indian languages and stated that language is not a barrier for a global audience in today’s hyperconnected world. He added that regional Indian cinema has transcended geographies and reached out to a global audience based on good content. He urged the M&E sector stakeholders to make India the ‘Content Hub of the World’.

Also addressing the audience on the occasion, Shri Sushant Sreeram, Country Director, Prime Video, India stated, “This endeavour echoes the essence of our commitment to showcasing and celebrating India’s unique culture and history, and strengthening India’s creative ecosystem, as envisioned in the Letter of Engagement signed between Amazon India and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting last year”.

The Producer of Swaraj, Abhimanyu Singh stated that the serial shows the journey of India from the arrival of Vasco Da Gama in 1498 to the attainment of independence in 1947. “When Vasco Da Gama entered India, our country was the richest country at that time. India’s contribution to world GDP was around 24%. But, after the beginning of the rule of the East India Company, India’s struggle started. However, the sacrifice of our freedom fighters brought us independence”, he said.

A colourful programme organized on the occasion showcased India’s rich art and culture and varied dance forms. A scintillating performance on a musical narrative depicted the indomitable spirit of millions of ordinary Indians who fought for the freedom of the motherland over the last five centuries.

The telecast of the serial Swaraj began on August 14, 2022, in Hindi on DD National and subsequently in nine regional languages (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Odia, and Assamese) on the regional networks of Doordarshan. Six Films From Pre-Independence India to Stream This Republic Day

Republic Day movie recommendations are often a compilation of patriotic movies, which we have probably already seen a few times over the years. I was about to do the same when I got into thinking if there was another way of feeling more connected to our roots through the lens of cinema, and bingo! What could be a better way to do this than peeping back in time captured by the classic movies shot in pre-Independence India? These films were impacted by the ongoing struggle for independence and rightly capture the essence of that era.

However, to look for films shot before 1947 available to stream on OTT today isn’t an easy task. While most platforms have “retro” “classics” or “old” genres, you’ll probably wind up with hits from the later parts of Indian cinema – a brilliant array of films starring Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, or Dilip Kumar.

While I was counting on Netflix the most, I couldn’t find a single title from the era in its long list of recommendations (believe me, I tried every cheat code and hack). Even Prime Video had just one – Mehboob Khan’s Humayun.

JioCinema, however, will let you stream plenty of these classics, free of cost (of course, with some annoying advertisements at the beginning of the film) Besides the ones recommended below from JioCinema, you could also go for Shah Jehan (1946), Sikandar (1943), Tansen (1943) and Pukar (1949) available on the streaming platform.

Next in line was Sheemaroo’s own OTT platform SheemarooMe, which is still harbouring films from the bygone days of even 1920s. While you might still have to battle a few ads here and there, if you aren’t a subscriber, for an ardent admirer of retro films this could be their next favourite website!

While YouTube itself doesn’t have many films from the pre-Independent era to rent or buy, some channels like Ultra Movies and Shemaroo have uploaded complete films for cinema lovers including Neel Kamal (1947), Achhut Kanya (1936), and Amar Jyoti (1936).

If you have an Amazon Prime Subscription, you could also go for an add-on for Eros Now – which includes plenty of such titles like the iconic Devdas (1935), Khazanchi (1941), and Anmol Ghadi (1946). While the original Eros site and application are down, the Eros Now channel on Prime’s Video is working just fine.

With that being said, get ready to take a trip back in time this Republic Day with these rare cinematic pieces. Here are our picks for six classic Indian films shot before 1947, available to stream in 2024. Happy binge-watching!

Bhakta Pralhad (1926)

Where: SheemaroMe

By 1926, silent films had already been around in India for around 13 years. At this time, mythological and religious storylines dominated the cinema.

Bhakta Pralhad is yet another classic by the father of Indian Cinema, Dada Saheb Phalke. It tells the mythological legend of demon king Hiranyakashyap and his defiant son Prahalad, who is a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap did everything — from burning Prahalad with oil to getting him trampled under elephants — to stop him from worshipping Vishnu, but Prahalad’s faith remained unscathed. Per the legend, the film shows the Lord finally appearing to his rescue and killing his demon father. The film was later remade in most of the Indian languages.

Now, let’s not forget the fact that this was the time when the cinema was still relatively new to colonised India and the viewers were strongly associating the actors with their mythological roles outside of the theatre as well. Interestingly, this is also the time when buses were introduced in India, in the coastal city of Mumbai.

Dharmatma (1935)

Where: ShemarooMe

Dharmatma came to the Indian audience when social injustice and untouchability made the rule of the day. It is a biopic of Sant Eknath – a philosopher, saint, and poet from 16th century Maharashtra. The film particularly focuses on his humanitarian defence of the ‘untouchable’ castes.

Dharmatma provides a rare glimpse into the deeply troubling social fabric of that time. The bilingual film was shot in both Hindi and Marathi and was one of the only four films made on casteism at that time.

The film was originally titled “Mahatma”, but the name didn’t get a clearance from the certification board (probably because the term had become synonymous with Gandhi at the time?). This is also the year when The Government of India Act 1935 was passed by the British Parliament.

Pukar (1939)

Where: JioCinema

Get a taste of the bygone days and lengthy Urdu dialogues in a 4:3 aspect ratio with the black-and-white classic Pukar. One of the earliest Muslim social films of the time, Pukar follows the inner conflict of Mughal Emperor Jehangir – known for his “an eye for an eye” attitude – when a woman accuses his wife Noor Jahan of murdering a commoner by mistake.

It is worth mentioning that after a few months of the release – when people were probably still bringing up the film and its characters in their evening ritualistic tea breaks – British India officially declared war against Nazi Germany, during World War II. (Isn’t it intriguing to think how the timeline for wars and art co-exist?)

Kismet (1943)

Where: JioCinema

Kismet holds a special position in the history of Indian cinema for a lot of reasons. It was the first Indian blockbuster film, which grossed one crore and redefined the position of cinema in India. It is also the first one to show an anti-hero character in prominent dual roles. Packed with a bunch of patriotic songs, the film resonated with the ongoing struggle for Independence as well.

Here Ashok Kumar – an undisputed superstar of that time – steps into the shoes of a pickpocket, who doesn’t have an ounce of shame for his immoral acts. (You probably remember him from his role as Professor Sinha in Mr. India. Or is it just me?). Moral epiphanies, emotional breakthroughs, and strides of romance are in store.

Prithvi Vallabh (1943)

Where: JioCinema

Prithvi Vallabh is an ideal king for Avantipur- kind, just, and courageous; he bows his head before God and no one. Tailap, the ruler of his neighbouring state is just the opposite. Envious of Vallabh, Tailap hatches an evil plan to attack his estate and hold him captive.

Durga Khote of Mughal-E-Azam fame plays Tailap’s equally wicked sister, who plays accomplice in all his conspiracies.

Interestingly, the film was a remake of Manilal Joshi’s silent film of the same name from 1924 – which in turn was an adaptation of a Gujarati novel.

Humayun (1944)

Where: Prime Video

Another hit from Ashok Kumar around that time was this classic – the seventh-highest-grossing film of 1945. The movie brings a slice of history in the form of Mughal emperor Humayun, who was forced to flee to Iran after losing Delhi to his enemies, shortly after he was crowned after Babur’s death. Nargis (Mother India) plays Humayun’s Queen Consort Hamida Bano in the film.

Sadly, this is the only pick from the era which I could find on Prime Video. So, if the cinephile in you awakens and you decide to search for more on the platform, let me save you from the disappointing drill!

‘Mumbai Diaries’ season 2 series review: Nikkhil Advani’s medical drama is still gripping, despite gaps

A still from ‘Mumbai Diaries’ Season 2

Premiered in 2021, Mumbai Diaries 26/11 was a tense, sobering series about the human spirit under unfathomable strain. With the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks as backdrop, creator and co-director Nikkhil Advani homed in on a set of characters — doctors and nurses, cops and hotel managers — and the ties of courage and compassion that saw them through that fateful, calamitous night. After a gap of two years, a second season, also directed by Advani, is now streaming on Prime Video. It carries over the format of the first instalment: another night, another crisis, another eight episodes of Mohit Raina leaping gallantly and recklessly into action. What’s perhaps lacking is the breathless urgency of Kaushal Shah’s fluid cinematography — he’s replaced here by Malay Prakash — and a certain chokehold Advani managed to exert on his audience.

Though months have elapsed, everyone at Bombay General Hospital is palpably haunted by the events of 26/11. Dr. Kaushik Oberoi (Mohit Raina) is standing trial — in court as much as in the public eye — for medical negligence, accused of prioritising a terrorist’s life over a brave cop’s. Kaushik’s wife, Ananya (Tina Desai), is expecting again (they had a miscarriage in the past, which had strained their marriage). Compensation packages to the victim’s families have been held up due to the ongoing probe—”It’s just an excuse to not pay,” a character says bluntly. It’s now the eve of 26/7, a date infamously associated with the catastrophic Mumbai floods (which actually took place in 2005). We see signs of a steadily intensifying downpour: leaking roofs, stalled traffic, a splash of rain smudging the dress of Social Services Director Chitra Das (Konkona Sen Sharma). Soon enough, it’s an all-out deluge, marked by accidents, water-logging, and patients pouring into the emergency ward of Bombay General.

The 2005 Mumbai floods killed over a thousand people and brought a teeming metropolis to a halt. Though it’s clearly the inspiration here, writers Yash Chhetija and Persis Sodawaterwala also allude to more recent events. Such as a stampede on a foot overbridge that ultimately collapses combines incidents from 2017 and 2019; Mumbai recorded severe rainfalls in both those years. With buildings crumbling across the city, news anchor Mansi (Shreya Dhanwanthary) pursues a story on construction scams — a permanent talking point of the annual floods. Just as the COVID-19 pandemic added resonance to the first season, with its frontline workers risking their lives to safeguard a city, so the new season arrives amid harrowing visuals of the Sikkim flash floods, which has claimed over 20 lives so far.

Mumbai Diaries (Hindi)

Creator and director: Nikkhil Advani

Cast: Mohit Raina, Konkona Sen Sharma, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Tina Desai, Satyajeet Dubey, Mrunmayee Deshpande

Episodes: 8

Run-time: 40-55 minutes

Storyline: The management and staff at Bombay General Hospital battle a new calamity in the form of the 26/7 Mumbai floods

Advani, as before, explores precise human narratives through the prism of a larger tragedy. At its most perceptive, Mumbai Diaries continues to examine everyday heroism as a complex, prolonged, painstaking act. The trajectory of bravery is often roundabout, incidental. Two of the characters set off on personal quests and end up unlikely saviours. Others reel from immense moral and ethical quandaries: trainee doctors involving themselves to the point of breaking protocol, a nurse acting selfishly in a moment of weakness, an out-of-practice neurosurgeon shuddering to make an incision on a child’s open brain.

There’s also a thread of physical and emotional violence which runs throughout the new season of Mumbai Diaries. It is most pronounced in the subplot of Chitra and Saurav (Parambrata Chatterjee), her abusive husband who’s tracked her down to Bombay General after she disappeared on him years ago. Konkona Sen Sharma is by turns steely and tremulous in an affecting role, and Parambrata — who last played a hard-to-pin-down doctor in Bulbbul— is thrilling as a virulent agent let loose on the hospital floors. The show is further helped by the presence of old-school actors like Balaji Gauri and Sanjay Narvekar. Mohit Raina is more torn and tortured than ever before, and while he delivers an adequately inward performance as Kaushik, he’s one of those actors who are best observed in motion (his female counterpart in Hindi cinema would be Taapsee Pannu).

Konkona Sen Sharma in ‘Mumbai Diaries’ Season 2

Konkona Sen Sharma in ‘Mumbai Diaries’ Season 2

As the heavens pour down, the series swerves back and forth from relationship drama and medical thriller to disaster epic. Production designer Priya Suhass recreates the traffic snarls, the flooded streets, the railway platforms overflowing with stranded commuters and primed to erupt any moment into chaos. The gliding single takes that created a sense of immersion and urgency in the first season are minimised here in favour of more conventional shooting and editing. The visual imagination is limited at best: a hackneyed shot of Kaushik punching his framed medical degree in frustration comes to mind. A power outage in the later episodes plunges the hospital scenes into darkness. If the idea was to distinguish the climactic portions from anything that has gone before, a trading in campy horror lighting and framing does them no favours.

Nikkhil Advani has made one of the most interesting transitions from films to series in recent years. The director, at times, gives in wholeheartedly to blatant audience manipulation, and a tendency to load subplots and crises to bursting point. The flashes of wry observation — such as a conscience-stricken Mansi protests in the newsroom that she is sick of regurgitating words like ‘spirit’ and ‘hope’ — are undone by the emotive swell in the final stretch, with several characters reconciled and important learnings underlined. This approach feels less than organic. It’s resisted wonderfully by a minor character in a scene. “This is all very new for us,” he rejoins. “We are trying to understand. It will take time.”
