25 Best Websites To Get Paid To Type

Are you great at typing? If so, you can use that skill to earn cold, hard cash by getting paid to type.

Getting paid to type is an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to earn money from home. All you need is a computer and an internet connection.

Here are the top ways to get paid to type.

Sites that Pay You to Type

While typing can be a flexible side hustle for anyone, not all opportunities are equal. Some options are legitimate ways to get paid to type, while others are either scams or don’t pay well.

Ranked in order of Trustpilot scores, these are the top places to start looking for your first typing gig.

1. Freelancer

Freelancer is a website that connects clients with someone who can complete a given task. As a typist, you bid on jobs by creating the best possible pitch. If the client likes your pitch, you’ll get the gig.

It’s free to sign up for Freelancer, and you can bid on six projects per month at no cost. If you want to bid on additional projects, you’ll need to pay for a membership. This can cost up to $59.95 per month based on the membership you choose.

The great thing about Freelancer is that you can set your own rates for each project. However, you’ll want to keep in mind that you’ll be competing in a busy marketplace.

2. 2Captcha

2Captcha offers work-from-home opportunities. All you’ll need is a computer or smartphone with internet access.

Working for the site is free. However, you need to complete a quick training and pass a test to qualify for the site. This should only take a couple of minutes.

Once you are approved to work for 2Captcha, you’ll be tasked with typing out the string of letters shown in images. According to the site, there are opportunities to decode text from images 24/7.

Unfortunately, 2Captcha has low pay rates. You’ll be able to earn $0.50 for 1 to 2 hours of work

3. Rev

Rev offers freelance transcription jobs. This means that you’ll be converting audio files into text.

Working for Rev is free. Assignments include transcribing recorded interviews, podcasts and focus groups.

To become a transcriber, you’ll need to take a quiz and submit a transcript to prove your competency in the English language as well as an understanding of Rev’s stylistic rules.

Once you are accepted, you’ll have hundreds of transcription jobs to choose from.

On average, Rev transcriptionists earn $245 per month. That said, the top monthly earner has raked in $1,495

Scribie homepage

Scribie advertises the opportunity to earn between $5 to $20 per audio hour.

When you work with Scribie, you’ll receive an automated transcript to help you save time. With that, you’ll correct the transcript instead of typing out the entire thing.

The earning potential with this site varies. According to Scribie, a beginner could earn $400 per month working eight-hour days. An advanced transcriber may earn $1,600 per month

With such a wide range of compensation, expect to start on the low end and work your way up. Since its launch, the company has paid out over $3 million to its transcribers

6. TranscribeMe

TranscribeMe is a large transcription website that will pay you to convert audio files to text files. It is free to register and work for the site.

On average, those working with the website earn $250 per month. However, some top earners make $2,200 per month.

As an added perk, the company says it is looking to hire for advanced positions from the submitted transcriptions. With that, you might be able to use a transcription gig as a starting point for a new career.

7. CastingWords

CastingWords is another transcription website that pays freelancers to convert audio files to text files. You can earn between 8.5 cents to $1 per audio minute

It’s important to note that the amount you earn depends on the quality of work you turn in.

For example, if your work is graded as a nine, you’ll receive 3x of the base pay. Alternatively, if the work is graded at four or below, you won’t be paid at all.

The potential of not getting paid is definitely a downside that warrants consideration before you get started.

8. Kolotibablo

Kolotibablo pays you to pull text out of captcha images. To earn $1, you have to type out 1,000 captcha images.

Most reviewers on Trustpilot mentioned that it takes a while to earn just $1. For example, one reviewer said it took 8 hours to earn 1 dollar.

The nice thing about Fiverr is you set your rates and can create different tiers within each gig to upsell customers on other services, such as editing or freelance writing.

It’s free to create a profile and gigs, but once a buyer purchases your services, Fiverr keeps 20% of your earnings.

There are thousands of typists on Fiverr, so check out your competition and try to offer services they don’t or fill a void they leave.

19. Upwork

Upwork is another freelance marketplace, but instead of sellers posting gigs, businesses post their needs, and you apply for them. So, for example, a company could post the need for data entry services.

Then, every interested data entry provider would ‘apply’ for the job by bidding their price and turnaround time.

Businesses review the offers and may choose a handful to interview. They’ll then narrow their selection to one person and award the job.

Like Fiverr, Upwork keeps 20% of your fees up on jobs up to $500, 10% on jobs $500 – $10,000, and 5% on jobs $10,000 or higher.

What is the best way to get paid to type?

The best way to get paid to type depends on your interests and goals. You could pursue captioning, captcha typing, transcription, data entry, micro tasks and more.

With so many options, you’ll need to decide which method piques your interest. If you aren’t interested in the option you choose, you might not stick with it.

The most important Irish American moments in history

From John F. Kennedy’s election to Riverdance and the Quiet Man, Irish Americans have left quite a mark on the world.

John F. Kennedy’s Election

In November 1960 John F Kennedy, the great-grandson of impoverished Irish emigrants, was elected President of the United States. Ireland and Irish America would never to be the same again.

The young American president was the embodiment of the American dream for so many Irish who had left. Suddenly Ireland was not so old-fashioned and set in its ways with Kennedy’s arrival.

A new dawn beckoned and in America, it became known as the Age of Camelot. On his visit to Ireland in June 1963 Kennedy got an incredible welcome. Ireland changed after his visit and a new confidence became evident.

America would never be the same either.

Here are just some highlights from JFK’s speech in the Dail (Ireland’s Parliament) during his trip:

The Charge of the Irish Brigade

Fighting 69th.

During the United States Civil War 250,000 Irish fought on the Union side. The most famous Irish unit was the Irish Brigade, led by the heroic figure Thomas Meagher, who was banished from Ireland after the 1848 abortive uprising.

He helped form the Irish Brigade which distinguished itself so much that President Lincoln personally visited and thanked them. “Thank God for the Irish flag” Lincoln stated, kissing the flag on a visit to General McClellan’s headquarters.

They lost 60 percent of their force at the Battle of Antietam, where they were thrown at the center of the Confederate line. At Fredericksburg, the Irish Brigade was devastated after being ordered to take on rebel forces, who held the high ground and were behind a stone wall and march across a field with no cover.

Up until the Civil War, many considered the Irish, not loyal Americans. Thanks to the Irish Brigade the patriotism of the Irish in America was never questioned again. Apart from the Iron Brigade, the elite fighting force, no brigade lost more men.

The 1965 Immigration Act

The 1965 Immigration Act, driven to passage by Senator Ted Kennedy, changed the Irish community in America forever and not for the better.

The act raised quotas from countries that had been previously disadvantaged, namely those in Asia and Latin America, and established a system under which an immigrant with family in the United States was given preference.

This proved prejudicial to European countries like Ireland, whose immigration figures had slowed. Official statistics showed a drastic reduction in the number of legal Irish immigrants, with more than 70,000 coming to this country in the decade 1956 to 1965, compared with only 10,000 plus in 1976 to 1985.

Kennedy apologized for outlawing the Irish in a 2006 statement:

“What we were trying to do was eliminate discrimination that existed in the law, but the way that that legislation was developed worked in a very dramatic and significant way against the Irish.”

Lunch Atop a Skyscraper

The iconic shot, Lunch Atop a Skyscrapper.

The iconic shot, Lunch Atop a Skyscrapper.

This iconic photograph, taken in 1932, shows 12 workers, legs dangling, eating lunch atop a steel beam 850-feet up in the sky. It has become one of the most famous New York images. The story of New York was the story of skyscrapers, and the story of the Irish was that they helped build them.

The Irish built much of America. They dug the canals, laid the rails for the railways and created the road network with picks and axes.

There were maybe two or four Irishmen balanced on the beam that September day in 1932 depending on who you believe, but it was a powerful picture that resonates to the present day. It represents the working-class Irish in a unique way.

The Quiet Man

Still from The Quiet Man, starring Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne.

Generations of Bowery music hall shows in the 19th century had played out a sentimental version of old Ireland for millions of immigrants. Songs like “Christmas in Killarney” and “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” had their start in Tin Pan Alley.

Then came “The Quiet Man,” the moment that vision of Ireland, held so dear, skipped to the silver screen and presented the lovable rural Irish as characters and rogues.

Maureen O’Hara the red-headed colleen became the very emblem of Ireland while John Wayne, as the returned Yank who gets the lady, was living nearly every immigrant’s dream. For better or worse “The Quiet Man” is fixed forever as an image of Ireland for millions of Americans.

Al Smith runs for president

Before John F. Kennedy there was Al Smith, the first Irish Catholic to have had a serious shot at the White House.

Smith was beloved in his Lower East Side district in New York and heavily influenced Franklin Roosevelt and his New Deal policies.

When Smith ran for president in 1928, the forces of reaction, such as the Ku Klux Klan, were quick to condemn him. The Know-Nothings said he would dig a secret tunnel to the Vatican and America would be swarmed by priests.

He lost but left his mark as the first Catholic to have had a shot at being president. The Al Smith dinner remains the largest annual political dinner in New York.

James Braddock vs Joe Louis

The son of Irish immigrants, Braddock was the last Irish-American heavyweight champion, a tradition that had lasted all the way back to John L Sullivan, in 1882, through Gentleman Jim Corbett, Jack Dempsey, and Gene Tunney.

The handover to African American champion Joe Louis occurred in 1937 and Braddock would never fight again after being knocked out in the eighth round. The era of Irish champions was over, and the Cinderella Man knew it and retired. African Americans would go on to dominate the division.

President Clinton’s visit to Northern Ireland, November 1995

President Bill Clinton during his visit to Northern Ireland, November 1995.

President Bill Clinton during his visit to Northern Ireland, November 1995.

President Clinton fulfilled the dreams of generations of Irish Americans by using the power of the United States to bring peace to Ireland. Irish American groups, after centuries of effort, finally got an American president to get involved. His impact was incredible.

The apex of his efforts was his visit to Northern Ireland in 1995. Hundreds of thousands turned out to see him in Derry and Belfast. He promised he would stay with them on the peace effort come what may, a promise he kept.

Michael Flatley, Jean Butler perform Riverdance

Jean Butler and Michael Flatley, the Irish American stars of Riverdance.

Jean Butler and Michael Flatley, the Irish American stars of Riverdance.

Irish dance was stuck in a deeply conservative mode, put there by tradition, history, and a watchful Church that wanted nothing to do with Irish girls and boys performing sexy dances.

Rigid positions and rigid bodies were the rule before “Riverdance.”

It would likely have died on the vine but for “Riverdance,” the interval act at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, which introduced the world to Jean Butler and Michael Flatley, both Irish Americans, with the help of creators Moya Doherty and John McColgan.

Suddenly Irish dance was fiery and sexy, full of vim and vigor. There was a massive response from the audience. Irish dance would never be the same again.

Sam Powell: New Warrington Wolves signing leaves behind home comforts at Wigan Warriors for next chapter

Sam Powell is embarking on a new start with Warrington in 2024

It had almost got to a point where it was difficult to imagine Sam Powell wearing anything other than a Wigan Warriors shirt in the Betfred Super League, let alone pulling on the colours of one of their most bitter rivals.

Yet that will be the case from next season after the hooker agreed the short move down the M6 to Warrington Wolves, bringing to a close 15 years at his hometown club which began with him joining Wigan’s academy as a 16-year-old and ended with October’s Grand Final triumph.

Loan spells with South Wales Scorpions and Workington Town in the early days of his professional career aside, Powell has known little else but the Warriors during a career which has seen him rack up 273 appearances in all competition for the club, plus be part of two Grand Final wins.

Yet the desire to move on after an at-times challenging 2023 campaign which included being sidelined for eight weeks with a shoulder injury and the opportunity to work under rugby league icon Sam Burgess as Powell considers his career beyond playing saw him decide to swap the cherry and white for the primrose and blue.

“I’ve never been closed-minded to think I was going to spend my whole career at Wigan,” Powell said. “The way it was going, it probably looked like that, but it’s professional sport at the end of the day and it comes down to a matter of things.

“I look back at my Wigan career now with my wife and my kids, and I’ve got nothing but great memories. They were good times, but I haven’t got long left in the game so I just want to enjoy myself here and give my input where I can.

“I look at it as a massive positive because I want to coach after I finish playing. I’ve got a chance to work under Sam and see how he does things, and I’ve been under four quality coaches, so the more the merrier.”

Powell already has some coaching experience under his belt after spending time working with Wigan’s youngsters over the past two seasons, and he intends to speak to Warrington director of rugby Gary Chambers to pursue the same opportunity with his new club.

The lessons from his former Warriors bosses Michael Maguire, Shaun Wane, Adrian Lam and Matt Peet have stood the 31-year-old in good stead and Powell is eager to keep gathering as much practical knowledge as possible for when the time eventually comes to hang up his boots.

“First of all, it’s what I see myself doing after the game, so I don’t see the point in waiting until after I’ve finished playing to gain that experience,” Powell, who has found his coaching work so far to be rewarding as well, said.

“Just looking at lads when they came in from signing as scholarship players, they make such a change in two years, and you can have a big influence on people in whether they want to choose rugby league or it’s not for them.

I look back at my Wigan career now with my wife and my kids, and I’ve got nothing but great memories. They were good times, but I haven’t got long left in the game so I just want to enjoy myself here and give my input where I can.

New Warrington signing Sam Powell

“I just enjoy seeing them come in as boys and leaving as young men into the first team and giving them certain aspects, not even in rugby league but lessons in life they can take forward whatever they choose.”

The emergence of Brad O’Neill as Wigan’s starting hooker during Powell’s injury-enforced absence and the signing of ex-Leeds Rhinos No 9 Kruise Leeming for the new season meant the former England Knights international would have likely faced stiff competition for playing time in 2024.

However, he finds himself in a similar position at Warrington because, even with Daryl Clark moving to St Helens, the Wolves have England international Danny Walker and Brad Dwyer, back at the Halliwell Jones Stadium after spells with Leeds and Hull FC, in their ranks too.

Powell accepts he may have to be deployed in the halves as he was at times during his Wigan career to get more minutes with the Wolves, but although he would rather play in his normal position, he is happy to take on another position if needed.

New Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess says that his side 'just need a little bit of tidying up' and discusses his coaching style.

“I don’t mind,” Powell said. “My preference would be hooker, but I just want to be on the field playing.

“Danny and Brad are quality players, probably a little bit different to me and how I play my game. All three of us will be striving to get game time and that’s one of my goals.

“It’s a quality squad here with really good players, and I just wanted to be around it.”

Powell has had to hit the ground running with the Wolves, having only linked up with his new team-mates earlier this week with pre-season training already in full swing.

His first competitive outing at the Halliwell Jones Stadium is likely to come in Round 2 of the 2024 Super League season when Warrington host Hull FC in their first home game of the campaign on Friday, February 23.

It is a venue he knows all about from his Wigan days, although this time Powell is looking forward to having the home fans behind him rather than against him.

“I’ve come very open-minded,” Powell said. “Although I know people who play for the club at Warrington, I don’t know too much about it.

“I started a few days ago and that’s something I’m going to have to learn very quickly. I’ve been through the history of the club and trying to get a sense of what it means to the fans, because they’re so passionate.

“I love playing here on Friday nights and it’s something I want to be a part of.”

Israel informs Arab states it wants buffer zone in post-war Gaza: Sources

Israel has informed several Arab states that it wants to carve out a buffer zone on the Palestinian side of Gaza’s border to prevent future attacks as part of proposals for the enclave after war ends, Egyptian and regional sources said.

According to three regional sources, Israel related its plans to its neighbours Egypt and Jordan, along with the United Arab Emirates, which normalised ties with Israel in 2020.

They also said that Saudi Arabia, which does not have ties with Israel and which halted a U.S.-mediated normalisation process after the Gaza war flared on Oct. 7, had been informed. The sources did not say how the information reached Riyadh, which officially does not have direct communication channels with Israel. Non-Arab Turkey was also told, the sources said.

The initiative does not indicate an imminent end to Israel’s offensive – which resumed on Friday after a seven-day truce – but it shows Israel is reaching out beyond established Arab mediators, such as Egypt or Qatar, as it seeks to shape a post-war Gaza.

No Arab states have shown any willingness to police or administer Gaza in future and most have roundly condemned Israel’s offensive that has killed more than 15,000 people and levelled swathes of Gaza’s urban areas. Hamas killed 1,200 people in its Oct. 7 raid and took more than 200 hostages.

“Israel wants this buffer zone between Gaza and Israel from the north to the south to prevent any Hamas or other militants from infiltrating or attacking Israel,” said a senior regional security official, one of the three regional sources who asked not to be identified by nationality.

The Egyptian, Saudi, Qatari and Turkish governments did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Jordanian officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

A UAE official did not respond directly when asked if Abu Dhabi had been told about the buffer zone, but said: “The UAE will support any future post-war arrangements agreed upon by all the concerned parties” to achieve stability and a Palestinian state.

Asked about plans for a buffer zone, Ophir Falk, foreign policy adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told Reuters: “The plan is more detailed than that. It’s based on a three-tier process for the day after Hamas.”

Outlining the Israeli government’s position, he said the three tiers involved destroying Hamas, demilitarising Gaza and de-radicalising the enclave.

“A buffer zone may be part of the demilitarisation process,” he said. He declined to offer details when asked whether those plans had been raised with international partners, including Arab states.

Arab states have dismissed as impossible Israel’s goal of wiping out Hamas, saying it was more than simply a militant force that could be defeated.

Squeezing Palestinians

Israel has suggested in the past it was considering a buffer zone inside Gaza, but the sources said it was now presenting them to Arab states as part of its future security plans for Gaza. Israeli troops withdrew from the enclave in 2005.

A U.S. official, who declined to be identified, said Israel had “floated” the buffer zone idea without saying to whom. But the official also repeated Washington’s opposition to any plan that reduced the size of Palestinian territory.

Jordan, Egypt and other Arab states have voiced fears that Israel wants to squeeze Palestinians out of Gaza, repeating the dispossession of land Palestinians suffered when Israel was created in 1948. The Israeli government denies any such aim.

A senior Israeli security source said the buffer zone idea was “being examined”, adding: “It is not clear at the moment how deep this will be and whether it could be 1 km or 2 km or hundreds of metres (inside Gaza).”

Any encroachment into Gaza, which is about 40 km (25 miles) long and between about 5 km (3 miles) and 12 km (7.5 miles) wide, would cram its 2.3 million people into an even smaller area.

In Washington, an Israeli official said the Israeli defense establishment was talking about “some kind of security buffer on the Gaza side of the border so that Hamas cannot gather military capabilities close to the border and surprise Israel again.”

“It is a security measure, not a political one,” the official said on condition of anonymity. “We do not intend to remain on the Gaza side of the border.”

Till now, Egypt, the first Arab state to sign a peace deal with Israel, and Qatar, which does not have formal ties but keeps communication channels open, have been at the centre of mediation talks with Israel that have focused on exchanging hostages held by Hamas for Palestinians in Israeli jails.

Shifting focus

Two Egyptian security sources said Israel had raised the idea in mediation talks with Egypt and Qatar of disarming northern Gaza and setting up a buffer zone in north Gaza with international supervision.

The sources said several Arab states opposed this. While Arab states might not oppose a security barrier between the two sides, there was disagreement over where it was located, they added.

The Egyptian sources said Israel had said in a meeting in Cairo in November that the Hamas leaders should be tried internationally in return for a full ceasefire. Mediators said the issue should be postponed until after the war to avoid derailing talks about hostage releases, the sources said.

A source in the Israeli prime minister’s office declined to address the reports, adding: “Netanyahu’s War Cabinet has defined the war missions: destroy Hamas and bring all the hostages back home, and we will continue until we complete our missions.”

One of the Egyptian sources said Israel, in its discussions with Egypt and Qatar, had shifted from a focus on retaliation earlier in the crisis towards showing a greater willingness to “rethink its demands as mediation continued.”

The regional sources compared the Gaza buffer zone plan to the “security zone” Israel once had in south Lebanon. Israel evacuated that zone, which was about 15 km (10 miles) deep, in 2000 after years of fighting and attacks by Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

They also said Israel’s plan for post-war Gaza included deporting leaders of Hamas, an action that would also mirror the Israeli campaign in Lebanon in the 1980s when it drove out the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which had launched attacks from Lebanon into Israel.

“Israel is ready to pay a costly price to expel and evict Hamas completely from Gaza to other countries in the region similar to what it did in Lebanon, but it’s not the same. Getting rid of Hamas is difficult and not certain,” said another of the regional officials familiar with the discussions.

A senior Israeli official said Israel did not consider Hamas to be like the PLO nor believe that it would act like the PLO.

Mohammad Dahlan, Gaza’s former security chief from the Palestinian Fatah faction which was ejected from the enclave when Hamas took control in 2007, said Israel’s buffer zone plan was unrealistic and would not protect Israeli forces.

“The buffer zone could make (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu’s forces a target also in the zone,” he said.

Inexperienced Matildas fall to Canada 5-0 in opening friendly

The Matildas have recorded their heaviest defeat in 17 months, with an inexperienced line-up thrashed 5-0 by Canada.

Nichelle Prince scored a first-half brace to send Canada on its way, with Cloé Lacasse, Simi Awujo and Adriana Leon completing the rout inside 62 minutes on Saturday AEDT.

It was the Matildas’ biggest defeat and poorest performance since a similarly inexperienced line-up posted a 7-0 humiliation to Spain in 2022.

Coach Tony Gustavsson had promised an experimental squad and no players from the 4-0 Women’s World Cup win over Canada were named in the starting line-up.

Sam Kerr and Mackenzie Arnold were out injured, while Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley, Mary Fowler and Kyra Cooney-Cross were among those benched amid heavy workloads at club level.

The starting line-up in Langford had a combined 429 caps, with 281 of those between Clare Polkinghorne and Tameka Yallop.

Charlize Rule and Sarah Hunter debuted at right-back and holding midfield and were among six players with fewer than 20 caps.

On a sodden artificial pitch at Starlight Stadium, the disjointed Matildas struggled to get to grips with the surface, or a brilliant Canada.

The Matildas were overrun in midfield and had no first-half shots to Canada’s 13 and it took just 10 minutes for the hosts to take the lead.

A heavy back-pass from Rule sold Polkinghorne into trouble and, as the centre-back got the ball caught under her feet, Prince pounced.

The striker pinched the ball away and coolly finished into the bottom corner.

Teagan Micah made three brilliant saves, denying Leon in the 24th and 31st minutes and Vanessa Gilles in the 27th.

But in the 43rd minute, Ashley Lawrence burst down the right and cut back to Prince, whose first-time shot beat a disappointed Micah at the near post.

Four minutes into the second half, the defending Olympic champions all but sealed victory when Hunter dawdled on the ball and Lacasse pinched it off her, before bursting to score.

In the 55th minute, Rule’s clearing header fell to Awujo, who had time to take a touch and fire home from distance.

Seven minutes later, Leon completed the rout when she drifted unmarked between a scattered defence to score.

Gustavsson turned to more experience in Fowler, Cooney-Cross, Katrina Gorry and Alanna Kennedy for the final half-hour.

The Matildas had their first shot through Fowler in the 74th minute, with Kailen Sheridan making a comfortable save.

In her second-last match, retiring Canada great Christine Sinclair entered the fray in the 62nd minute.

The second friendly is in Vancouver on Wednesday afternoon AEDT.

Look back at how the action unfolded in our blog.

Key events

Final thoughts

Football is a cycle, and just as we saw the Matildas go through some growing pains in their early days under Tony Gustavsson, this was another moment in which we were reminded of what the next generation of players coming through the ranks looks like.

Commentator Andy Harper isn’t as forgiving of this result, though, the biggest loss Australia have copped since that 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Spain last year.

But just like that game, this was an experimental team: Five players with 15 or fewer caps, and with a number of key senior players benched until the hour mark.

“When you make bulk changes, bulk experiments, with so many young debutants, it makes it really difficult for them to shine,” Amy Chapman says on the broadcast.

She reckons a better balance needed to be struck by drip-feeding young players into the senior starting side, citing Kyra Cooney-Cross’s partnership with Katrina Gorry on the field as a big reason why she’s come such a long way so quickly. Maybe we’ll see that in the next game on Tuesday.

That’s not to say Canada weren’t excellent. They were a team who have clearly played a lot of football together, and who will be thrilled to put five past the team that defeated them at the World Cup six months ago.

The field itself was tough; a slick artificial surface in the frosty rain made it really difficult for both sides, and you could see the Matildas’ confidence wane as the game wore on.

They registered just two shots all game — both coming through Mary Fowler when she came on — which, you’d hope, will be a focus for the side in their final match of the year next week.

All in all, given the gulf in experience and quality between the two sides, it’s perhaps no surprise that it ended the way it did.

How they bounce back and what changes they make before the rematch on Tuesday will determine whether the Matildas can finish their remarkable 2023 with a bang or a whimper.

Until then, thanks for joining me. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Full-time: Canada 5 – 0 Australia

What’s next?

Is there much to be gained by serving up another experimental line up on Wednesday Sam? Surely we field our strongest line up to see if we can spoil the Christine Sinclair farewell party. A big crowd deserves a competitive game.

– stumcin

It’s a good question. I think it depends on a few things: 1) how the younger players pull up after this game, 2) how the more experienced players are feeling, and 3) what Tony Gustavsson wants to work on.

I can see a situation where there’s a combination of the “two” teams we saw tonight. Where, say, a Sarah Hunter plays alongside a Katrina Gorry, or a Remy Siemsen starts up front alongside a Hayley Raso or Mary Fowler.

Seeing how some of the individuals slot into the regular starting team would be the way I approach it, personally. But I’m not Tony. So we’ll have to wait and see.

90′ 2 minutes of added time

89′ The game is winding down now

Both teams have mostly cancelled each other out in the last 15 minutes. In terms of the scoreline, it’s well out of sight, and you feel that the substitutions Gustavsson made were partly made to save the confidence of the younger players. Those on the field now didn’t really need minutes, and they’re not playing with the kind of hunger that they may have had the scores been a little closer. That’s OK though. So long as nobody gets injured, that’s what matters.

84′ Canada try the counterattack

Christine Sinclair picks up the ball in midfield and turns before charging forward after Australia’s midfielders over-committed.

Young winger Bianca St. George is tearing down the right wing, and is spotted by Sinc, who delivers a delightful outside-of-the-foot through-ball into her teammate’s path.

She tears into the box, but Alanna Kennedy is in lockstep with her. The towering centre-back throws herself across the grass as she anticipates the cross, but St. Georges loses control of the ball and it trickles out for a goal kick.

80′ Canada 5 – 0 Australia

The Matildas have looked much more composed since those substitutions were made just after the hour, but Canada aren’t letting them back into the game.

While they’re not charging forward with quite the same energy or savagery as they did early on, they still don’t look super fazed by Australia’s fresh bodies, passing the ball calmly around the back and out onto the wings before recycling it back again.

The Matildas aren’t giving up – Mary Fowler had another penalty-box entry about a minute ago – but this seems to mostly be about damage control now.

77′ Tekkers Buchanan

The Chelsea centre-back looks to be at sea, on the ball with her back to goal as Amy Sayer pressures her from behind, but the veteran does a couple of lovely step-overs and wiggles away from the young Matilda, taking on three other Aussies and jinking a lovely pass through them all.

They’re just toying with us now …

76′ Substitution Australia

Hayley Raso comes on in place of Tameka Yallop.

73′ And just as I say that!

Mary Fowler receives an incisive pass from the right wing, turning into the D at the top of the box and rocketing her foot through the rubber.

It’s almost too straight a shot, though, and it slams right into the chest of goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan for her first save of the night.

That’s something, I guess…

71′ Canada 5 – 0 Australia

With 20 minutes left, the Matildas have a mountain to climb.

They’re not going to get back into this game, you’d think, but a start would be actually having some shots at goal.

I don’t remember the last time Australia went for so long in a game without registering a single shot.

Their possession has improved since the substitutions were made, but with Mary Fowler the only recognised senior attacker on the field – with Emily Van Egmond and Tameka Yallop supporting her – you wonder whether they’ll get close enough to register even one.
