A fresh approach to freedom camping

This summer, new regulations should bring most of our freedom camping troubles to an end and allow this classic Kiwi tradition to continue for those who stick to the rules.

Those troubles ballooned with the tourism boom, specifically the 2011 Rugby World Cup which prompted the government to pass the Freedom Camping Act. Anticipating a flood of campervan travellers and not enough places for them to stay, the act was designed to assist local councils and DOC manage their freedom camping sites by giving them increased powers.

In effect, the new legislation created more problems than it solved, promoting Aotearoa as a soft-touch for illegal freedom camping which exploded across the motu. Once-peaceful reserves burst at the seams with beaten-up people movers, fake self-containment stickers were a dime a dozen, and locals were screaming blue murder as they trudged through poo. All this while hard-working holiday parks were losing business hand over fist.

Sorting out the Freedom Camping Act was essential, and of June this year it’s done.

How to be self-contained

The privilege of freedom camping hinges largely on self-containment, which is the ability to carry all your own waste (toilet and rubbish) and water (fresh and dirty) in a secure and sanitary manner.

The new Self-Contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Act, passed in June this year, amends the original Freedom Camping Act to tighten up the rules around this.

The upshot is that you can only freedom camp if your vehicle has a plumbed-in toilet, so those porta potties simply won’t cut the mustard any more. The standards for fresh and wastewater systems, ventilation and rubbish storage have also been tweaked.

There are more than 600 designated sites across the country.

VANESSA LAURIE/Stuff

There are more than 600 designated sites across the country.

While these rules don’t apply to tenters not travelling in a vehicle, they do apply to the rooftop tents you see on the top of Land Cruisers and suchlike.

The new standards will be regulated by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board, which is also responsible for approving vehicle certifiers. By early 2024, you should see certification services start popping up across the country.

Certification will likely cost $120 and comes with a new, green sticker. Anyone who wants to freedom camp will need to have one displayed on their vehicle by June 2025. Until then, the old blue sticker will do even if you still have a portable toilet.

There are increased fines for rule-breakers. The new infringement regime includes a $400 ping for camping outside of permitted areas, up to $1800 for displaying a fake sticker, and up to $2400 for leaving waste or causing damage.

None of this will bother responsible freedom campers, of course, nor people experiencing homelessness. In a compassionate move we can all be proud of, the new act compels enforcement officers to distinguish between freedom campers and the homeless, referring the latter to social support agencies instead.

A question remains as to what will happen in working-visa hotpots like Queenstown where the critical housing shortage forces foreign workers to live in cars. Let’s hope our compassion and manaakitanga sees this trouble sorted too.

Where you can freedom camp

Certified as self-contained, you’re set to freedom camp in more than 600 designated sites across the country.

A good place to find them is Campermate, New Zealand’s largest camping database accessible via a free app or website. It lists specific rules and facilities for every mapped freedom camp, which is particularly handy given that they vary so widely across locations and council boundaries.

Some places will have potable water and flushing toilets, while others will not. Some stipulate a two-night maximum, while others allow longer stays. When it comes to freedom camping, local knowledge is vital.

Another reliable source of information is the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA), a membership-based organisation representing private motorhome and caravan travellers. The association is in rude health, the membership having exploded since Covid.

If you’re serious about self-contained camping, it’s well worth joining the NZMCA for various benefits including a comprehensive database of campsites including a bunch of cheap members-only campsites. They also offer self-containment certification via authorised officers.

Your major considerations are power, water and waste.

Being off-grid requires careful planning around power usage. Fortunately, ever-improving portable solar and battery tech should keep the cellphone charged and lights on at night.

Cooking is commonly done on gas, either a portable stove, gas cooktop or barbecue. Just remember that good ventilation is essential when cooking inside a vehicle.

Freedom campsites usually have a water on tap or other source, but check ahead to be sure of the supply, and note any signage regarding boiling or treating. To be legally self-contained, you’ll need to have securely fitted water storage for at least four litres per day per person for at least three days.

Many freedom camping spots also provide toilets, but be ready and able to use your own. You’ll also need to work out when and where you’ll dispose of its contents at a dump station, the designated public sewers where all your wastewater should go. Note that your vehicle must have sufficient onboard storage to hold every drop of wastewater potentially generated from your fresh water and other sources.

Dump stations can be located via Campermate and other online sources.

Rubbish bins are seldom provided, so carry plenty of rubbish bags and be prepared to take it all away with you. This includes food waste, which can be harmful to wildlife.

Keen to dip a toe in the water but not quite ready to take the full plunge? Fair enough – the simple life ain’t for everyone! But between its fun-factor, back-to-nature-buzz and low-environmental footprint, I’d argue that good old Kiwi camping is the ultimate holiday.

As well as around 600 freedom camps there are 1200 other options ranging from low-cost council reserves and DOC camps to utterly excellent holiday parks with powered sites, awesome communal facilities and a growing number of comfy cabins and motel rooms.

Bobby Charlton, the Manchester United and England soccer great, dies at 86

Bobby Charlton, an English soccer icon who survived a plane crash that decimated a Manchester United team destined for greatness to become the heartbeat of his country’s 1966 World Cup-winning team, has died. He was 86.

A statement from Charlton’s family, released by United, said he died Saturday surrounded by his family.

An extravagantly gifted midfielder with a ferocious shot, Charlton was the leading scorer for both United (249 goals) and England (49 goals) for more than 40 years until being overtaken by Wayne Rooney.

“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world,” United said.

“He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game.”

Alex Ferguson, who managed United from 1986-2013, said before Charlton’s death that he “is the greatest Manchester United player of all time — and that’s saying something.”

“Bobby Charlton is absolutely without peer in the history of the English game,” Ferguson said.

Charlton was also renowned for his humility, discipline and sportsmanship. He was never sent off in 758 appearances for United from 1956-73 or 106 internationals for England from 1958-70.

Charlton played with George Best and Denis Law in the so-called “Trinity” that led United to the 1968 European Cup after surviving the 1958 Munich crash that wiped out the celebrated “Busby Babes” team. He won three English league titles at United, and one FA Cup.

“For a footballer, he offered an unparalleled combination of grace, power and precision,” said former United defender Bill Foulkes, another survivor of the Munich air crash.

“It added up to a greatness and something more — something I can only call beauty.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described Charlton as a “football legend whose impact on the game spanned generations.” United great David Beckham said Charlton was “truly a national hero.” British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called him ”one of the game’s greatest players.”

Charlton’s England scoring record stood for 45 years until Rooney scored his 50th goal for the national team in September 2015. Three of his England goals came in the World Cup in 1966, during which Charlton played every minute for the team and stood out especially in the semifinals when he scored twice against Portugal to lead England to a first major final.

England beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time in the final.

Although Ryan Giggs beat Charlton’s appearance record for United in 2008, his scoring record for the club lasted another nine years. It was only in 2017 — 44 years after Charlton last wore the famous red jersey of England’s most successful club — that Rooney scored his 250th goal for United.

After retiring in 1973, Charlton went into coaching and founded a youth scheme that included Beckham among its participants.

After brief spells in charge of Preston, Wigan and Irish side Waterford, Charlton returned to United in 1984 as a director and persuaded the board in 1986 to appoint Ferguson, who delivered 38 trophies during nearly 27 years in charge.

Knighted in 1994 by Queen Elizabeth II, Charlton remains a mainstay at Old Trafford, featuring alongside Best and Law on a statue outside United’s stadium.

Charlton avoided the controversies and distractions that damaged the career of Best, with his style and demeanor bringing a popularity that transcended the tribalism of club and international football.

“I felt he could be a bit aloof,” the late Best said in a 2001 magazine interview. “We were never at each other’s throats, we simply didn’t go and have a pint together.”

In November 2020, it was announced that Charlton had been diagnosed with dementia, the same disease that afflicted his brother Jack — who died in 2020 at age 85 — and another World Cup winner, Nobby Stiles.

Charlton’s death left Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat trick in the 1966 final, as the only surviving member of that England team.

“We will never forget him and nor will all of football,” Hurst said of Charlton on X, formerly known as Twitter. “A great colleague and friend, he will be sorely missed by all of the country beyond sport alone.”

Robert Charlton was born Oct. 11, 1937, in the coal-mining town of Ashington, northeast England, and his talent was obvious from a young age.

“We realized Bobby was going to be a bit special as a player when he was about 5 years old,” said Jack, his older brother. “He was always kicking a football or a tennis ball against a wall and when it bounced back it stuck to him like a magnet.”

Charlton wrote in 2007 that his family sometimes relied on illegally caught salmon or rabbit to ward off hunger, while his father — also named Robert — gathered coal washed up on local beaches and sold it to bolster his income.

His father’s commitment to his mining colleagues meant that in 1966 he missed Charlton scoring both goals against Portugal in that World Cup semifinal because he didn’t want someone else to have to cover for him in the pit. He was, however, persuaded to attend the final when the Charlton brothers lifted the trophy.

Charlton’s playing career began far from home in Manchester after leaving school at 15, making his United debut three years later against Charlton in 1956.

Within two years, tragedy struck the tight-knit group of United players whose relationship was forged as trainees in austere conditions. The team was still celebrating winning at Red Star Belgrade to secure a place in the European Cup semifinals when their plane caught fire on its third attempt to take off in heavy snow after a refueling stop in Germany.

Charlton miraculously emerged from the smoldering wreckage with only light head injuries and picked his way through the wreckage to help survivors. Spotting manager Matt Busby groaning in agony on the smoke-shrouded runway, Charlton rushed to help the father-figure who had promoted him to the first team.

But eight members of the “Busby Babes” team packed with bright prospects were among the 21 fatalities. They included Duncan Edwards, considered one of England’s most talented players at 21.

“Sometimes it engulfs me with terrible anger and regret and sadness — and guilt that I walked away and found so much,” Charlton wrote in 2007.

Charlton became driven by a lingering obligation to preserve the memories of the Munich dead, returning to action less than four weeks later and helping a hurriedly assembled team of survivors and stand-ins reach that season’s FA Cup final.

Busby rebuilt his team around Charlton, adding the 1965 and 1967 English league titles to the championship they won in 1957.

“There was always one great hope — the return to greatness of my beloved club,” Charlton said.

The biggest prize of his club career arrived in 1968 as United became the first English club to become champion of Europe. Charlton scored twice in a 4-1 extra-time win over a Benfica team containing Portugal great Eusebio.

But Charlton is perhaps best known for being part of the England team that won the World Cup. It remains England’s only major title in men’s soccer.

Charlton and his brother fell out over Jack’s public assertion that Bobby’s wife caused him to become estranged from his mother. But the pair reconciled and Jack presented Bobby with a lifetime achievement trophy at the 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.

“We have had our public disputes, proving that in any family discord can sometimes disrupt the force of love and blood, but throughout that time I never lost the sense of wonder and gratitude that we were together in 1966 on such a great day in the history of our nation’s sport,” Bobby Charlton said.

Charlton was rarely seen in public in the final years of his life after being diagnosed with dementia. He was never forgotten, though.

“This man, from day one, was everything I wanted to be,” United striker Marcus Rashford wrote of Charlton after hearing about the diagnosis. “Kind, professional, caring, talented.”

Another former United player, Phil Neville, said Charlton deserved to stand alongside the likes of Pele, Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi as a soccer great, because of what he achieved and the way he did it.

“He’s up there with those players,” Neville said on NBC on Saturday.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, whom he married in 1961, and his two daughters.

THE WILD BEAST OF THE WEST IS IN ITS DEATH THROES & MUST BE PUT OUT OF ITS MISERY

The idea was simple, even though it is based upon a thoroughly false premise. Drain Russia in every possible way that doesn’t involve too much blood and treasure of your own using another nation to do this. Then, when the job is done and Russia is weak enough its present governing elite can be relatively easily be usurped and replaced.

Within the premise above is the  erroneous projection that Russia has the intent to take all of Ukraine. This was never true (though the practicalities flowing from western insistence on keeping the conflict going may well result in this outcome). The premise is that those governing Russia presently wish to reconstitute the Soviet Union. Whether the projection or premise are believed 100% by all within Washington and beyond or are only tactics used to instill fear, obedience and consent doesn’t affect the way a world war may eventuate from such tactics.

Attempting by every means possible to weaken Russia is an act of war in and of itself and upping the level to which you attempt to do this amounts to seeking to “bring on” a world war whether this is the conscious intent or not. Russia however, neither wishes to take all Ukraine or to reconstitute the Soviet Union. Russia wants to keep NATO away from its borders and safeguard the security of the Russian-speaking people of the Donbass in perpetuity. That is about it. Defeating the present regime in Kiev will effectively bring about the secondary goals, of de-Nazifying and de-militarising Ukraine. The president and government taking over from the present incumbents will certainly NEVER allow a repeat of past event.s

The agenda at work in Ukraine however, does not emanate from within Ukraine, it emanates primarily from the USA and in particular from President Joe Biden, supported by a group of rabid U.S. neoconservatives and by America’s allies, the UK, most of the EU plus New Zealand and Australia. The ‘Global Majority’ though, stand increasingly against this clearly perceived elite push for endless war from the USA. Despite this opposition there is no sign to date of any reduction in the fervor to maintain this war effort by the USA, still glued to false narratives, premises and projections as described above. This urgent do or die response by western elites seeing no alternative course to secure the continuance of their power and its increase can only be ended by their total defeat.

The Russian authorities must now surely be fully aware of the agenda behind all of the above, that is, to strengthen the power and influence of the West that badly needs shoring up, that this is a do or die situation for them and is fueling all we see happening now, and has done since 9/11. The Russians must now surely see there will be no end to the provocations, to the aggression, to the epithets thrown or the lies told, to the creation of hatred and loathing, or the to the demands for consent to ever more war… no matter HOW much it all costs. Sense has departed. Logical thought has been dispensed with. A wild and desperate western elite rage to keep what they have and have so much more that they want and a determination to do everything possible to get it, has replaced all true rationality among U.S. political and media elites.

While western leaders simply repeat the same memes and tropes that keep their misguided prejudices firmly in place, those on the Russian and Chinese side have strove constantly to keep cool heads, to strategize against the manically irresponsible and desperation-based policies of the West. Akin to taming a terminally wounded animal that senses its imminent death, this is far from an easy task. That wild animal has no rational impulse inside its being except to survive, this overrides all else and it is this that generates the adrenalin-infused attacks it makes wherever its imagined enemies lie.

Russia will, despite everything,l see this episode through to its final end. The only alternative to this is to allow the destruction of Russia by the forces reigned against it. Therefore there IS no choice but to see this through by every means required. In saying this it must be done while retaining the keenest eye on the most effective means of doing it. And this is what we have seen from Russia since February 24th 2022 and ever since the West-assisted coup in Kiev of 2014. Russia has been playing its cards very carefully as those it is playing against are both powerful and ruthless. Those western political and media elites, taken over by mass irrational impulses through desperation regarding the potential loss of their power, status and influence, are willing to contemplate ANY action now.

Russia may yet be defeated in this duel to end all duels now taking place in Ukraine. If so then we move forward to the projection that is ultimately desired by the U.S. elites, a totally weakened Russia that can be hollowed out, carved up and made amenable to take over by individuals aligned firmly with the West. The western powers then apply similar tactics to China, another even more delusionary goal than that currently being forwarded against Russia. Endless war with its attendant mass deaths and destruction doesn’t faze U.S. neoconservatives a bit. Bring it on they would say. Happily for us the ‘Global Majority’ now aligned ever more firmly alongside both Russia and China will, unless there is some further unforeseeable catastrophic occurrence, stop the West’s ultimate goal in its tracks.

The wild, fatally-wounded animal of the West, in its rage to keep its power and stave off its diminishment is inadvertently only creating more and more opposition to its retention of that power. The majority of the world rejects the brutality and total selfish nature of that power, its unending desire to gather ever more to it and the completely unrelenting addicted nature of that quest. Having emerged from under its threatening grasp the global majority is moving ever closer toward those who offer vitally protective sanctuary. The wild beast that is the western world and more specifically the commonality of its elites, can harm the world less each day that now dawns.

None of this stops western elites for playing out their utterly dysfunctional mental states and fomenting the continuance of their activities that will continue to cause mass death and destruction for some time still to come. But the period of time within which they can continue is rapidly shrinking. You can almost feel it now in the air, the time of their demise has come, the end of their brutal period of dominance is ending…and almost every move they now make only hastens their demise.

Chelsea 2-2 Arsenal: Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard grab comeback point for Gunners

Arsenal battled back from two goals down to salvage their unbeaten record and a point at Chelsea, with a full-blooded London derby eventually ending in a 2-2 draw after goalkeeper errors at both ends.

The visitors looked on course for their first defeat of the season to their rejuvenated neighbours when David Raya was caught out by Mykhailo Mudryk’s mishit cross at the start of the second half. They were already trailing to Cole Palmer’s first-half penalty and had seemed short on ideas in attack.

But Robert Sanchez’s poor pass out at the other end allowed Declan Rice to shoot into an empty net from 30 yards and Leandro Trossard sent the travelling supporters into delirium when he tucked in a wonderfully whipped cross from fit-again Bukayo Saka at the back post with six minutes of the 90 remaining.

Leandro Trossard finds the equaliser for Arsenal at Stamford Bridge

Man City’s win earlier in the day saw the defending champions recover top spot in the Premier League table following their defeat at the Emirates before the international break but Arsenal’s fight back means they are second only on goal difference. Their comeback maintains their positive momentum.

Arteta, though, will have questions to answer about his goalkeeper. Raya looked nervous in the first half against City but survived. Against Chelsea he was exposed. Arsenal’s alternative keeper Aaron Ramsdale was at home following the birth of his son but Arteta will surely be weighing up whether to reinstate his former No 1 for Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Sevilla.

For Pochettino and Chelsea, they avoided a record fourth-straight Premier League loss at home to Arsenal but will be kicking themselves for not capitalising on another performance which demonstrated the strides they are making. They at least edge into the top 10 with this draw.

Pre-match mark of respect

There was a period of silence before kick-off as a mark of respect to those affected by the escalating crisis in the Israel-Hamas war.

How Arsenal grabbed a point in west London…

Chelsea have a wretched recent record on their home ground but back-to-back wins on the road before the international break had instilled growing confidence and they came flying out of the blocks against their neighbours, with Enzo Fernandez shooting narrowly over inside a minute.

In contrast, Arsenal couldn’t get going, with Chelsea’s determination to make an early mark on the match spilling over when Palmer trod on Gabriel Jesus’ ankle and was booked. Oleksandr Zinchenko saw yellow for a trip on a too-quick Mudryk soon after as the contest heated up in the October rain.

Team news

  • Chelsea made two changes, with Mykhailo Mudryk and Malo Gusto in for Armando Broja and Axel Disasi. Fit-again captain Reece James was on the bench.
  • Arsenal made two changes, with Bukayo Saka back fit and Gabriel Martinelli also starting in the frontline. Leandro Trossard and Eddie Nketiah made way.

Throughout that early period Raheem Sterling had looked dangerous running into the right channel and it was his cross which led to the penalty. Mudryk’s flick gave Saliba no time to react and with the handball rule interpreted as it is at the moment, contact with his raised arm meant a penalty was inevitable once VAR Jarred Gillet took a look and sent referee Chris Kavanagh to the pitchside monitor.

Palmer had to fend off Sterling to take the spot-kick but after the wild start to the game his strike was composed, sending Raya the wrong way. The 21-year-old went close to a second 15 minutes later when he lashed just past a post and the signs are there that the summer recruit from Man City has found his feet at Chelsea now.

Cole Palmer puts the home side ahead against Arsenal

Arsenal offered nothing in that first 45 in an attacking sense and a nightmare moment for Raya at the start of the second half doubled their trouble. Mudryk’s miscued cross floated over the Arsenal keeper, who had strayed too far from his line, and dropped inside the back post. A revived Mudryk lapped up the applause.

Raya was wobbling when he then sent a slack pass straight to Palmer on the edge of the box – although he just about managed to recover to block the shot.

At the other end, Arsenal threatened from a series of corners, with Takehiro Tomiyasu heading over as Robert Sanchez clattered into opponents and team-mates alike, but it was Chelsea who recovered to look most likely to score next, with Nicolas Jackson closed down by Raya before Palmer curled wide.

But Sanchez handed Arsenal a way back, with his pass out allowing Rice to pounce from long-range. It was another glaring goalkeeper error and this one turned the tide.

Declan Rice pounces on a Robert Sanchez error to bring one back for Arsenal

Moments after Chelsea supporters had celebrated the introduction of fit-again captain Reece James, it was another sub who made a decisive impact, with Trossard expertly guiding in Saka’s cross after escaping Malo Gusto’s attentions.

The Arsenal fans celebrated the equaliser as emphatically as they celebrated the winner against Man City a fortnight ago. It was worth two points less but could be another important moment in this season’s title race.

Pochettino: Game was under control until Sanchez error

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino: “Until the we conceded the first goal the game was under control, we didn’t concede many chances to an amazing team. I’m disappointed because I think we dropped two points.

“Today we are in an era of football where we want to play from the back. Mistakes can happen in football. It was unlucky. This goal gave the belief to Arsenal. At the same time I’m so happy because we were very competitive and we need to feel proud of our performance and players. The game was closer to 3-0 than 2-1.”

Arteta critical of penalty call but says: Our reaction was phenomenal to going 2-0 down

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta: “The start of the game, we didn’t play with enough purpose and clarity. We didn’t win enough duels in tight areas and then they escaped from that. Credit to them because they are a top side full of top players. When we don’t have those two things we become an average team. The way the team reacted [to going 2-0 down] is phenomenal. That’s the part I loved. And that the dressing room was quiet [afterwards] – because they want more.

On the Chelsea penalty for Saliba’s handball: “The law is clear in where the ball has to be in relation to action. It’s impossible to jump without lifting your hands. Mechanically it’s impossible.”

Opta stats: One win in 12 Premier League games at home for Chelsea

  • Chelsea have won just one of their last 12 home Premier League games (D6 L5), a 3-0 victory against Luton at Stamford Bridge at the end of August.
  • Following Leandro Trossard’s equaliser, Arsenal have now had five goals scored by substitutes in the Premier League this season with only Brighton having more (7).
  • Cole Palmer’s opener for Chelsea was the first away goal Arsenal have conceded in the Premier League since May at Nottingham Forest, ending their run of 355 minutes without conceding on the road in the competition.

What’s next?

Chelsea are back in Premier League action next Saturday when they host Brentford; kick-off 12.30pm.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are in Champions League action on Tuesday with a trip to Sevilla; kick-off 8pm.

Their next Premier League assignment is against Sheffield United at Emirates Stadium on Saturday October 28; kick-off 3pm.

Can Biden Hand Out $100 Billion In Climate Grants Before Trump Is Reelected Or Released From Prison?

‘Joe Biden rides a unicorn prancing through a solar farm, with wind turbines in the near distance.’ Generated by Substack’s AI and cleaned up in photoshoop. Oh, lookit the MC Escher harness thingy, too.

Damn, we really wish the rest of America would please just come to its senses and fall in love with Joe Biden’s signature climate bill, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) like we have. The name is a big part of the problem. “Inflation reduction” was a concession to get Joe Manchin on board. Can laws get better names retroactively, maybe something as simple as the “American Climate Plan”?

It’s the biggest climate action the US has ever taken, and while it got attention recently on the first anniversary of its signing, we sometimes think we should be going up to people in the street and telling them just how much it’s already doing in moving the US toward a renewable energy economy. That long-delayed transition is no longer a “gonna happen,” it’s a “happening right now” — just this week, the London-based energy think tank Ember released an analysis that found roughly half the world’s economies are “five years past peak fossil-fuelled power generation” (silly British spelling!). Obviously that’s not due to the IRA, from just over a year ago, but it’s a measure of progress.

Have We Mentioned Just How Amazing The Climate Bill Is? Let Us Do So ONCE MORE

As Yr Wonkette has reported previously, the tax incentives in the IRA — both for buyers of EVs and for manufacturers — have already led to a boom in planned US battery factories, as well as a lot of other clean energy investments. Goldman Sachs estimated earlier this year that, since the programs run through 2032 and have no spending cap, total IRA investments in clean energy will approach $1.2 trillion over the next decade, spurring Crom only knows how much in spin-off investments, jobs, and growth.

On Thursday, Heatmap published an update on another tranche of spending built into the IRA, its $110 billion in grant programs, of which the administration has awarded the first $11.8 billion so far. But what a range of grants! Let us nerd out together:

There’s more than $100 million for protecting the Pacific Ocean’s salmon and steelhead fisheries.

Hundreds of millions more to plant urban canopies in Atlanta, Phoenix, and dozens of other cities.

$1 billion for two new weather research ships for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and tens of millions for mapping the best “fuel breaks” — roads, rivers, and other natural features that will slow wildfires in Colorado, Wyoming, and other states.

Most initial funding has gone to existing federal programs, to fund climate programs in the Agriculture Department, to upgrade the nation’s national energy research labs, to hire more conservation scientists for US Fish and Wildlife, to make federal buildings more energy efficient, and so on. The second-largest single grant, around $3 billion, has already gone to the Postal Service to fund an entirely new fleet of delivery vehicles, the vast majority of which will be EVs. (They should start hitting the streets in 2026.)

So far, new programs created by the IRA are still ramping up, and haven’t yet started funding grants, because that’s how government programs do unless you’re trying to shovel money out during a pandemic to prevent an economic crash. (Yes! You can absolutely say the climate crisis calls for similar alacrity, albeit with more oversight to prevent grifting.)

Heatmap offers some for-instances where the programs are still coming on line:

The EPA has yet to start making grants from its $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, for instance, a multi-purpose fund which will eventually help capitalize dozens of green banks and provide loans to cut the cost of rooftop solar.

The EPA has also yet to disburse money from its new programs to reduce air pollution from ports, cut methane emissions from oil-and-gas infrastructure, and help environmental-justice organizations.

The IRA also provided nearly $10 billion to the USDA to help rural electric cooperatives decarbonize their power plants; that money has yet to flow as well.

But that doesn’t mean everyone at EPA just farts around all day reading Wonkette and picking fights on Twitter, because a lot of people have already moved to Bluesky. (Here’s a little Easter Egg for attentive readers: I had five Bluesky invite codes for alert readers, but they are all now distributed. Read Wonkette carefully and you may spot the next bunch I give away!) Rather, the White House explained in a statement that it’s already “launched” $70 billion in IRA grant and rebate programs, which Heatmap translates to mean that the feds “may have opened up applications to receive funding from those programs, but not yet awarded any money from them.”

For an analogy, consider the the pace of another major Biden climate program, this one under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Its $5 billion “National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI)” program granted states funds to build out a network of EV charging stations. Joe Biden signed the BIL into law on November 15, 2021, but that didn’t make charging stations just start popping up like itinerant preachers on college campuses on a nice spring day.

The Departments of Energy and Transportation had to design the NEVI grant program, then states had to apply to for approval of their plans, set up their own bidding processes and determine where stations would go, and all that. That’s why it took not quite two years after BIL passed for Ohio to announce last week (without even thanking Joe!) that it had become the first state to break ground on a fast-charging station funded by the program.

Gov. Mike DeWine (R) Very Proud Of New EV Charging Stations Ohio Building All By Itself!

Gov. Mike DeWine (R) Very Proud Of New EV Charging Stations Ohio Building All By Itself!

Joe Biden Signs Infrastructure Bill! Everyone Thank The Last Guy For Some Reason We Guess!

Joe Biden Signs Infrastructure Bill! Everyone Thank The Last Guy For Some Reason We Guess!

People should start seeing NEVI-funded charging stations around the country in 2024 going forward. Oh, hey, want to see how your own state’s doing with its EV charging station progress? There’s a federal website for that! Thanks a lot, Biden!

In other words, look for the pace of IRA grant spending to pick up in the coming year and beyond, and for example, for those rural electric co-ops to start greening up, at least in places where Trumpers aren’t fretting that solar panels will poison the groundwater. (They won’t.)

There’s some concern that IRA money needs to go out before the end of 2024, to get climate progress into the pipeline before any chance that Donald Trump might return to the White House and mandate that coal be served with all school lunches. The IRA would have to be repealed by Congress to fully reverse it, but any Republican administration could certainly use the levers of executive power to effectively gut much of it, as that “Project 2025” wet dream for dismantling democracy from the Heritage Foundation lays out.

Of more immediate concern to many Democrats is that some of the IRA’s key rebate programs for home energy upgrades — particularly a program promoting energy efficiency/weatherization, and another focused on electrifying homes — aren’t yet available to consumers. The Energy Department hasn’t yet finalized the necessary rules, which leaves states waiting for the funding that will help them set up and administer the rebates.

As a result, some of the rebates won’t be available until next year, which has led to frustration for consumers who want to green up their homes and for companies who’d be happy to install insulation, better windows, efficient appliances, and smart circuit breaker panels. Potential customers are holding off on projects until the rebates are available, and that in turn means companies aren’t yet staffing up to meet the demand.

Share

That will of course get worked out, the sooner the better, and there are other factors — especially current high interest rates — that are holding back some parts of the energy transition. (My personal pet theory is that the Energy Department regulators might be doing their damnedest to bulletproof the rules from legal challenges, and that takes time and deliberation. This is pure speculation on my part, but informed by the rightwing reaction to many other federal programs like Obamacare, EPA regulations, and Biden’s student loan forgiveness proposal.)

Happily, Heatmap notes, while consumers and contractors await the availability of those grant programs, another IRA program is already up and running that’ll augment the green transition: a “$200 million program meant to train home contractors to install heat pumps and other home efficiency measures” will begin awarding grants on November 1.

Oh no, jobs, clean energy, and economic growth! Sounds like hell, huh?

In Israel, Tribe of Nova festival survivors seek solace in trance music culture

From our special correspondent in Israel – The Tribe of Nova was the first time one of the world’s most famous psychedelic trance (or psytrance) festivals took place in Israel. It turned out to be the country’s worst terror attack. For psytrance music followers, the time for therapy to prevent post-traumatic stress disorder has come.

“It was the most amazing minute of my life. All my people were there. The sky was beautiful. The birds were beautiful in the sky. The music, everything was so amazing. I felt like the whole world has a way for salvation. And then it happened. So this is what makes it horrible. Because it was the most beautiful moment,” psychotherapist and clinical social worker Einat Haimovich tells FRANCE 24.

Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, Haimovich has been listening to the survivors of the Tribe of Nova music festival. She has heard stories like this a lot. Far too many.

Read more‘We survived by playing dead’: Hamas attack turned Israeli rave into nightmare

Some 260 people were killed and dozens more kidnapped among the 3,500 or so who had flocked from all over the world to celebrate the values of “free love and free spirit, preservation of the environment, appreciation of natural values” promoted by the festival. “Many people that I spoke to said it was the best party they have ever been in,” Haimovich says.

“[Everything was] sunny and beautiful. [Everything was about] friendship and love … [and] in a minute [’s time] … dark[ness] came into our lives,” she adds.

The social worker was due to travel to Greece that day to celebrate her 50th birthday.

Instead, Haimovich, along with her partner Iftach Shahar created a place to welcome members of their psychedelic trance music community.

“I [originally] built this place for Dhamma (editor’s note: Buddha’s doctrine) teaching and meditation,” Shahar says.

“[But] after we understood the situation here in Israel … we opened it especially for the people that came back from the festival. But we are open for everybody. We are not making any selection. Anyone that feels that he needs to talk and needs a big hug. We are here to hug him … be with them for a while and cry with them and maybe laugh with them,” he says.

The refuge, located in a moshav, a cooperative farmers’ village south of Tel Aviv, was ready in less than 10 days. The set-up is simple but welcoming: a large wooden terrace, second-hand furniture, an open-plan kitchen and, behind it, a room entirely dedicated to meditation. Everthing is set against soothing background music made up of the metallic jingling of wind chimes.

‘Hippies in our souls’

“I think that the trance community here started in after the first intifada in Israel (editor’s note: 1987-1993),” Haimovich says.

“After that we all felt like we need to bring our free spirit, to bring our love, to bring the idea of peace. We [are] all like hippies in our souls even though we had to fight in the war,” she says.

Since then, Israel’s psytrance music scene has grown massive. The Tribe of Nova was the first Israeli edition of the Brazilian psytrance festival Universo Paralello, one of the best known in the world. But it became the worst terror attack in Israel’s history.

Apart from the volunteers, the place Haimovich and Shahar created is for the moment depressingly empty.

“We just opened yesterday. So people still don’t know about this place,” Shahar says, noting that only six people came the previous day.

“I believe that next week … people will start coming,” he adds.

Like other Israeli therapists, Haimovich began talking to victims through Zen Zones, groups set up to help people whose psychedelic journeys were not going as planned.

“It was there they [were] sending us their name and we’re calling them and we start talking to them … Many therapists in Israel start[ed] talking to them on the phone to help overcome the trauma through grounding, breathing … talking about the guilt, the fear, [and] everything that they’ve been through in that horrible day,” Haimovich says.

The nightmare had lasted during 12 hours for the victims, Haimovich adds.

Soon it became clear that the victims needed a place.

“Not for therapy but to be together, to sit down, to eat something, to drink coffee, to do some art, to paint, to play music … to get back to their lives, to what they knew of themselves before,” she says.

“The idea is that the people who need therapy … long-term therapy, will go to therapy, and they can come here just to be themselves,” Haimovich says.

Every day, five to 10 people, all volunteers, will take turns to welcome them. Each with his or her own tools and techniques. Among them, dance therapist Tal Weiss Sade explains her methods.

“My perspective is always the body,” she says, kneeling in the meditation room.

“In trauma the body is quick to speak and we need a lot of … grounding,” Weiss Sade says, adding that she uses Tibetan bowls, ocean drums and sand-filled cushions that she places on the body.

“That heavy touch [is] very relaxing … like an ocean … [which helps] lower our anxiety levels,” she says.

Weiss Sade readily admits that helping the survivors allowed her to breathe a little. To escape the four walls of her home, where she lives with her daughters.

“This is … what’s so beautiful in Israel. The civilians, the communities here are amazing,” Haimovich says.

“Everybody … volunteers to do something … [Even though] the country is not really working … the people working here are amazing … We hold a hope that something good will happen in Israel after this terrible, terrible thing that happened here,” she says.

Shahar meanwhile hopes to help the festivalgoers who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

“You know [the series] Fauda (editor’s note: an Israeli television series about a special forces unit going undercover among the Arab population)? I was in Gaza streets walking dressed as a woman. The fighting there was very bad at the time… In half a year, nine guys from my unit died and me and my friends in the unit killed hundreds,” Shahar recalls, suddenly seized by a rush of emotion.

“So I came out of the army with very strong PTSD … and it took 25 years to understand how to deal with my PTSD,” he says.

Saved by psychedelic therapies

Shahar says he went through 25 years of wandering accompanied by alcohol and drugs.

“After a while, I understood that it’s either I choose death [or] I choose life … slowly I started recovering and then Buddhism and meditation came in and [I started] working with psychedelics and medicine. And slowly, slowly I started to, to touch my traumas and deal with them. And today I can say that I’m okay, but I’m not cured,” Shahar says.

Recounting his first psychedelic trip, Shahar says he had had to take 10 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms for it to work, whereas today he only needs “2 grams [and] I’m like in heaven”.

Shahar says he saw himself in a cradle at a year-and-a-half old.

“I was crying, crying, crying, crying and nobody came to me and then I looked at that baby and … it’s the same feeling that I’m feeling now. It was depression. And I went to that baby … and I hugged him and I said, everything will be okay and sorry. And the day after I woke up … no [more] depression like a miracle,” he says.

Shahar then began taking other psychedelics such as LSD, and managed to deal with army-related traumas.

“I froze, you know, and people like were hurt and I couldn’t do anything. And then I started to understand that all these years of drinking and taking drugs and running away, because I forgot that situation,” he says.

Considered 60-percent disabled by the Israeli army due to PTSD, Shahar admits that he has been going through a difficult time since the Hamas attack.

“I built this place for people who I know are going through hell.”

Read moreIsrael’s Negev Bedouins, forgotten victims of the Hamas attack, rally to provide aid

Shahar is convinced that many of the survivors of the attack are in the limbo he was in 25 years ago.

“They are now sitting in their homes and smoking weed like crazy or maybe trying to work with themselves with psychedelics, which is very bad because you need people who know how to work and how to take you through the trip … So yeah, we need to take them by the ear and bring them here,” he says.

Haimovich, however, warns that she will not be using any psychedelic therapy.

“It’s not legal here. So we’re just doing the preparation and the integration,” she says.

The psychologist then recalls that many festivalgoers were on drugs and in a state of ecstasy when the attack began.

“Some of them ran, hid, helped other people to hide … not moving for six hours. They really are heroes. It is amazing to hear the stories. They found power in the most terrible moments of their lives, to talk to their moms and to tell them thank you,” she says.

Haimovich does not hesitate for a second when asked whether the psytrance scene, firmly established in Israel for decades, can survive such a trauma.

“We believe that all of us are one and this is what’s happening in these parties … People died while doing this [so] we must continue the legacy that they left us. This is the legacy of love and peace,” she says.

Beware of the body-snatchers: National Trust faces fresh battle with right-wing insurgents

For the third consecutive year, a dark and sinister force is at play, abetted by a cynical right-wing press, attempting to present Europe’s biggest conservation charity as some kind of dangerously radical cake-and-countryside organisation.

It’s that time of the year again, the run-up to the National Trust’s AGM, when 5.37 million members can have a say on the work and management of Britain’s best-loved heritage institution. But for the third consecutive year, a dark and sinister force is at play, abetted by a cynical right-wing press, attempting to present Europe’s biggest conservation charity as some kind of dangerously radical cake-and-countryside organisation, to sway public opinion, and, ultimately, to control direction.

Unlike other British cultural and environmental organisations such as Kew Gardens, the V&A, and the National History Museum, which use a supposedly unbiased public appointments process but conveniently find themselves stuffed with Tory cronies, the NT’s board is decided by members. It can therefore only be infiltrated should members vote for the infiltrators. As such, Restore Trust (RT), the opaquely funded, ‘anti-woke’ pressure group, has devoted its entire three-year existence to National Trust (NT) infiltration.

Founded in 2021 following the publication of a report by the Trust that highlighted connections between 93 of its historic places and slavery, the group is backed by multi-millionaire Tory donor Neil Record, who funds the Tufton Street charity Global Warming Policy Foundation. Restore is opposed to what it sees as the National Trust’s “modish, divisive ideologies.” There has been speculation, which the organisation rejects, that its real motivations are to stoke up culture wars and to see the NT relax the environmental protections it has on its 620,000 acres of land.

Despite its best efforts, so far, Restore infiltration has been futile. Undeterred by last year’s failed bid to take control of the Trust, when none of its candidates were elected onto the council, RT has returned with another candidacy panel, to ensure it ‘rescues’ the Trust; to, in its director Zewditu Gebreyohanes’ own words, ‘save it from ‘wokery.’

Among the candidates seeking to impose such change is former Supreme Court judge and historian Lord Jonathan Sumption. While an improvement on 2021’s RT candidate, Stephen Green of Christian Voice (perhaps even Restore realised that lobbying for someone who had lobbied against the criminalisation of marital rape and defended laws proposing the execution of some homosexuals made them look bad), Sumption’s candidacy is still worth critical scrutiny.

Described as a ‘conservative neo-liberal and libertarian,’ in the 1970s Sumption worked with Tory MP Sir Keith Joseph at the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS), of which Joseph was a cofounder, along with Margaret Thatcher. The CPS is of course a ‘Tufton Street’ resident that regularly publishes work by climate science deniers.

You often see Lord Sumption’s name tagged onto articles bleating out typical right-wing waffle in the usual Rightist places. In a recent piece in The Spectator, Sumption argued the case for leaving the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR).

A well-known critic of lockdown, in November 2020, he wrote for the Daily Mail that it was ‘morally wrong for government control freaks to tell us what we can do at Christmas.’ You get the picture.

In the run-up to this year’s AGM, the Telegraph, a longstanding National Trust opposer and Restore crusader, alongside GB News, and the Daily Mail, has been working itself up into a predictable apoplectic state.

In September, the newspaper was quick to promote Lord Sumption’s candidacy for the National Trust’s council. The article cites Sumption’s claims that the charity is being ‘undermined by woke rows.’ It continues how ‘despite his experience, he [Sumption] has not been endorsed by the Trust as one of the five preferred candidates and The Telegraph understands he was not even interviewed by the nominations committee.’

A spokesman for Restore Trust told the Telegraph: “Lord Sumption is one of the finest legal minds of his generation, as well as an exceptionally gifted historian with a passion for historic buildings. It is unbelievable that the National Trust is not jumping at the opportunity to have his advice and expertise.”

Perhaps that’s because the NT is determined not be penetrated by right-wingers who oppose some kind of imaginary ‘woke’ agenda? Instead, it is opting for candidates who are more aligned to its actual values and aims, such as James Dixon, a former civil servant and CEO of Peak District National Park Authority, who has said that his priorities include ensuring NT “properties are viable and heritage is maintained to the highest standards.”

The other independent board candidates backed by Restore Trust are Philip Gibbs, Andrew Gimson, Lady Violet Manners, and Philip Merricks.

You might recognise Andrew Gimson’s name, as he is the Telegraph’s former sketch writer, and a contributing editor to ConHome. One of his most famous ConHome pieces had to be when he argued that we are ‘suffering the excesses of woke capitalism because the Sixties generation has captured business.’

In his pitch for NT election, Gimson claimed that in recent years the Trust has “strayed from its proper purposes.”

Fellow Restore-backed candidate is Lady Violet Manners, daughter of the UKIP-supporting Duke of Rutland. The family’s estate, Belvoir Castle, has hosted fundraising events for the party. Lady Violet, a former Dolce & Gabbana model, has warned that “the Trust has become distracted by a political agenda that detracts from its mission.”

As part of its Restore profile-raising content, the Sunday Telegraph ran a simpering interview with Manners, who said she was so sick of the “wokeness” and “politicisation” of the National Trust that she was putting herself up for election as a candidate to its advisory council.

And guess who is a good friend of Lady Violet? Nigel Farage no less, who, according to Yorkshire Bylines, has been a dinner guest at the Duke of Rutland’s castle. Farage is one of several high-profile, right-wing, climate change denial political figures that want to see the National Trust under new management, along with Jacob Rees-Mogg and Susan Hill, the Tory candidate for mayor of London. In September, arch Brexiteer Farage announced he was throwing his weight behind the renewed attempt by Restore to capture the Trust.

“I hope that Restore Trust knocks a bit of common sense into what was once the great National Trust,” he said.

Which brings me onto the subject of common sense.

As well as the likes of Lord Sumption and Lady Violet, Restore Trust is the natural fit for the Common Sense Group, an ultra-traditionalist group of 60 or so MPs. Since forming in the summer of 2020, the group has become synonymous with the UK Right’s ever-growing assault on their ‘woke’ enemies. Determined to persuade the notoriously impressionable Boris Johnson that Tories must engage in an all-out culture war, the group’s chair Sir John Hayes wrote “The Battle for Britain has begun… it must be won by those who, inspired by the people’s will, stand for the common good in the national interest.”

One of the first actions of the group was to write an open letter to The Telegraph, berating the National Trust for its efforts to present the multiple historical perspectives surrounding its properties (as any half decent historian would tell you. Perhaps Lord Sumption was a better lawyer than he is historian?)

The group accused the NT of being in the grip of “elite bourgeois liberals” because of the charity’s report that acknowledged links between its properties and slavery. They also called for a Charity Commission investigation into the Barnardo’s children’s charity after it published an article explaining white privilege.

The letter read: “History must neither be sanitised nor rewritten to suit “snowflake” preoccupations. A clique of powerful, privileged liberals must not be allowed to rewrite our history in their image.”

Like Restore Trust regularly spouting their anti-National Trust propaganda, Hayes and his Common Sense group have frequently published opinion columns in the same right-wing newspapers. Writing in the Express this month, Hayes argued that the ‘liberal elite are out of touch with ‘common sense.’
I won’t depress you with too many extracts, but here’s one:

“Too many twitterers and bloggers, trapped in echo chambers of their own creation, are a world away from those who know very well that, as Home Secretary Suella Braverman declared, foreign offenders should be “booted out of Britain” or that, in the Prime Minister’s words, “a man is a man, and a woman is a woman.”

More depressingly still, is how the Common Sense Group’s aim to push the government in a more hardline direction on a range of ‘culture war’ issues seems to be paying off. Our current prime minister, looking down the barrel of almost imminent electoral defeat, seems more focused on right-wing campaigns related to culture wars, migration and opposition to environmental initiatives than his two predecessors were. Then there’s our Home Secretary, the darling of the Tories’ right for her attack on ‘woke’ politics, and uncompromising approach to migration. With Sunak and Braverman leading the charge, this year’s Tory Party Conference was preoccupied with culture wars, with coherent policies on immigration, the environment and other pressing issues facing the country, taking a backseat.

Striving to stop discussions of issues like the slave trade and promote a fake and sanitised version of British history, is not unlike what Vladimir Putin and his cronies are up to in Russia. Russia’s propaganda model has been described as the ‘firehose of falsehood,’ due to the high numbers of state-run channels and messages and a shameless willingness to disseminate partial truths or outright fictions. Then there is Hungary, where Victor Orbán drives a similar right-wing authoritarian propaganda machine through state media that spurns out what has been labelled as ‘ready-made fiction direct from the government.’

Of course, discussion around culture wars and promoting a sanitised version of history inevitably leads us to America, where culture wars have polarised Americans. In recent years, US conservative politicians have increased efforts to ban books on racial and sexual identity.  A recent report by Pen America, a non-profit that supports freedom of expression in literature, found that book bans in US public schools have increased by 33 percent over the last school year. The authors whose books were targeted were “most frequently female, people of colour, and/or LGBTQ+ individuals,” read the report.

While blatant book banning has yet to arrive in Britain, there is a growing sense that this could soon change. In April, research by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (Cilip), the UK’s library and information association, found that a third of librarians had been asked by members of the public to censor or remove books and have also faced threats in discussions about the removal of books. The most targeted books involve empire, race and LGBTQ+ themes. This not to say that tastes do not change and what was enjoyed by and found acceptable to earlier generations, has much less resonance in our own age. Books, films, television programmes, and pop songs are not sacred texts, immutable to change. Reinterpretation and modification have been going on probably since the written word emerged in the ancient Middle East. That though, is long way from the kind of book banning and burning that happens in today’s America and Russia.

Restore Trust and its bid to wrestle control of the National Trust because it sees it has some kind of threat for simply maintaining a commitment to historical and cultural truths, concurs with the foreboding sense that Britain, under culture war-obsessing Tories, is creeping towards authoritarianism.

Right-Wing Media Watch – Poland’s ‘populist nightmare’ is over, but gains little attention in Britain’s right-wing press

A sigh of relief could be heard in Brussels, as the xenophobic, populist nationalists in Poland were defeated by a broad coalition of progressive parties in Sunday’s parliamentary elections. Such relief doesn’t seem to have been replicated in Britain, where reporting of the story has been notably absent, at least from the pages of the right-wing press.

Out of the nationals, only the Guardian’s frontpage made reference to the hard-right ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) heading for defeat in elections, which attracted a record turnout of 72 percent, the highest since Poland’s transition from communism in 1989.

While there is a lot of other stuff going on, it almost stands to reason that our right-wing newspapers wouldn’t want to draw attention to the booting out of a hard-right party that was allied to the Tories when Britain was in the EU. In 2009, David Cameron formed a new right-wing fringe group in Europe, known as the European Conservatives and Reformists. Labour accused the Tories of moving to the extremes of Europe after the party confirmed that its 26 MEPs would sit with Poland’s homophobic Law and Justice party, among others on the Right.

Since it came into power in 2015, the nationalist-conservative party has inflicted colossal change and damage on Poland. As Anne Applebaum writes in the Atlantic, such change has included turning state television into a propaganda tube, using state companies to fund its political campaigns, and politicising state administration. This is on top of turning the country into a combative anti-EU power, and attempting to overhaul Polish judiciary, which it believed was filled with corrupt communist-era judges.

The damage gives us a taste of what a seriously right-wing party can do. And with the Tories arguably heading that way, what it could do to Britain.

In a comment piece in the Guardian about the unseating of Law and Justice, historian and political writer Timothy Gardon Ash describes Poland’s ‘populist nightmare’ as being ‘almost over,’ noting how it is still early days and there are tough tasks ahead. Exploring why the opposition won – the largest opposition party being the Civil Coalition, which is led by Donald Tusk, former president of the European Council – the author says some voters were alarmed by opposition warnings that the ‘anti-Brussels course of PiS might lead to Polexit.”

While the threat of a Brexit-style ‘Polexit’ reportedly spooked Polish citizens into not voting for the anti-EU ruling party, the pro-Brexit Express framed its reporting of the election as being “a bitter hammer blow to many in Poland with PiS being supporters of the country leaving the European Union.” The report splashed with the headline: ‘Anti-Brexit Donald Tusk declares election victory in Poland.”

Meanwhile The Times’ acknowledged how the Polish election is ‘proof that liberals can beat populists…’ but… this ‘is no watershed’. Putting a damper on the hope that the defeat of the hard-right nationalists in Poland will mark a new brighter future for Europe, the analysis states: ‘First, the gloomy tidings for Europe’s centrists and liberals; there is little reason to believe that the Polish election heralds the beginning of a broader anti-populist fightback,” continuing that “national elections tend to be just that – national.”

Whether Britain’s anti-EU Tory press like it or not, the demise of the hard-right and change of government in Poland will almost inevitably have huge implications, both at national and international levels. Nationally, the return of Donald Tusk as the country’s next prime minister, promises to undo much of the damage, including paving the way for billions of EU-funded euros that has been withheld by Brussels over rule-of-law concerns. On an international level, Poland’s move away from populist nationalism will provide a cheery boost to mainstream parties across Europe, eight months from the pivotal EU Parliament elections. No wonder the story was given minimal editorial space in Britain’s pro-Brexit, right-wing media.

Woke-Bashing of the Week – Suella Braverman doubles down on ‘woke’ policing crackdown

The Home Secretary, who loves to shout out her contempt for the ‘wokerati’, has vowed to double down on ‘woke’ policing, calling for officers to be ‘patrolling the streets, not policing pronouns.’

The comments were made at the annual Police Federation of England and Wales Conference, where Braverman said she was fighting a “campaign against political correctness in policing.”

“I’m not fighting my campaign against political correctness in policing only for the sake of the law-abiding majority who want to see officers patrolling the streets, not policing pronouns on Twitter. I also know that’s what the majority of you signed up for, too,” she told officers.

She added that anything that distracts from investigating every crime is ‘unwelcome,’ saying, “whether that’s enforcing non-existent blasphemy laws unnecessarily recording a non-crime hate incident or joining in with political demonstrations.”

Referring to Baroness Louise Casey’s findings in a review earlier this year that the Metropolitan Police was ‘institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic,’ the Home Secretary said: “I don’t believe that term is a useful one or an accurate one. It is not a term that I use when describing the police.”

The comments follow Braverman’s earlier assault on ‘woke’ police, when she said officers are not paid to ‘dance with drag queens’ or ‘wave flags.’ The remarks appeared to criticise the way officers policed LGBT+ Pride events and were made after the Home Secretary ordered a review into ‘political activism in police.’

When Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister in October 2022, he too promised to stamp out ‘woke’ policing.

The PM had made the same remarks during the Tory leadership campaign, when he said police should tackle street crime not Twitter jokes.

Ministers’ deciding that rising levels of crime in Britain is down to ‘wokeness’ in the police force is just another example of the preposterous nature of right-wingers’ all-consuming and half-baked war over ‘wokeness’ that has been escalating in recent months. It is also further proof of how desperately out of ideas the government seems to be. They can’t exactly argue that crime is on the rise because 13 years of Tory rule, marked by detrimental funding cuts, which have let the crisis spiral out of control. It’s much easier to blame ‘wokeness’ and distract from the real causes.

As for making the police less ‘woke,’ when you think about the many reports of lewd banter, and ‘everyday misogyny’ in the Met, it seems there are a number of police officers who could do with being a little more ‘woke.’

Week 7 NFL spreads and storylines: Low totals and heavyweight matchups

We’re coming off a somewhat bizarre Week 6 in the NFL.

The Browns with a backup quarterback handed the 49ers their first loss and the Jets defence shut out the Eagles during a second-half comeback to spell Philly from the ranks of the undefeated. Heck, the Bills were even one end zone incompletion away from losing to the Giants.

The NFL’s low scoring was also prevalent with 26 of the 30 teams in action posting 21 or fewer points. What can fans expect this week?

The Cowboys, Bengals, Jets, Titans, Texans and Panthers are on bye, but the five 5-1 teams at the top of the standings are all in action and three of them are featured in prime time.

There has been an abundance of low-scoring games early this season, and unders bettors have been loving life. That was especially the case in Week 6 when unders went 12-3. Can fans expect some regression as we enter the middle stretch of the regular season? Jacksonville and New Orleans kicked off Week 7 by hitting the over on Thursday by more than a converted touchdown.

There are only eight teams currently above .500 on overs and the only matchup this week featuring two those teams is Green Bay at Denver where the 45.0-point total is the third-highest of the week.

PROP WATCH: GUARANTEED SACK-FEST AT METLIFE STADIUM?

Washington allows a league-high 5.7 sacks per game and the Giants aren’t too far behind at 5.5 sacks allowed per game. Considering the Bears at 4.2 are the only other team allowing more than four sacks per game, can we expect both teams to continue struggling against the oncoming pass rush?

Commanders quarterback Sam Howell often doesn’t do himself any favours by holding onto the ball too long. Luckily for him, the Giants rank 32nd in the NFL in sacks and are the only team averaging fewer than one sack per game. Washington, meanwhile, ranks eighth averaging more than 3 sacks per game so New York pivot Tyron Taylor will need to keep his head on a swivel.

WAS Jonathan Allen to record a sack: Yes (+110) | No (-140)
WAS Da’Ron Payne to record a sack: Yes (+105) | No (-135)
WAS Montez Sweat to record a sack: Yes (-140) | No (+110)
WAS Chase Young to record a sack: Yes (-170) | No (+140)
NYG Dexter Lawrence to record a sack: Yes (+150) | No (-180)
NYG Kayvon Thibodeaux to record a sack: Yes (-115) | No (-115)
NYG Leonard Williams to record a sack: Yes (+150) | No (-180)

Sweat leads this group with 4.5 sacks this season, followed by Thibodeaux with 4.0 and Allen and Young each with 3.0 on the year so far.

WEEK 7 STORYLINES TO FOLLOW

Two heavyweight matchups in the spotlight: Detroit and Baltimore might not get as much attention as the other top teams, but there’s no hiding the fact both are among the most well-rounded rosters in the NFL this season. This huge interconference contest is the best matchup of the early slate. The Lions will be without running back David Montgomery, which puts pressure on rookie Jahmyr Gibbs who’s coming off a hamstring injury.

Is it hyperbole to dub this week’s Sunday nighter a potential Super Bowl preview when Miami visits Philadelphia in what is projected to be the highest-scoring matchup of the week?

The Eagles have only allowed two 100-yard receivers so far this season — Justin Jefferson of the Vikings put up 159 in Week 2 and Cooper Kupp of the Rams had 118 in Week 5 – but they’re preparing for an entirely different beast in the Miami passing attack. Tyrek Hill already has four outings with more than 150 yards and at least one touchdown, so the Eagles secondary will have to be dialled in. On the opposite sideline, A.J. Brown of the Eagles has at least 127 receiving yards in four consecutive games.

Can Jerry Jeudy turn things around with Denver? The Broncos selected Jeudy with the 15th-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The wide receiver has yet to record 1,000-yard season and is struggling to produce in 2023. He’s coming off one of the worst games of his NFL career – three catches for 14 yards on five targets – and was eviscerated by Steve Smith Sr. on an NFL Network pre-game broadcast. With his name swirling in trade rumours, will he and Russell Wilson be able to find a connection at home against the Packers?

Divisional matchup and backup drama: Divisional matchups often result in fireworks and there are five of those on tap this week. Buffalo and Seattle can widen their respective gaps on New England and Arizona in the standings, the Commanders and Giants could be busy sacking each other, Atlanta and Tampa Bay are set to battle it out for top spot in the NFC South, and the Chiefs and Chargers typically engage in high-scoring affairs.

If we’re in for another low-scoring week overall, some of that could end up being attributed to several backup QBs behind centre. Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson and Daniel Jones of the Giants, both of whom missed last week, are listed as questionable and both Chicago and Las Vegas will be going with backups in that matchup.

Cousins back in primetime spotlight: Week 7 is capped off with the 49ers visiting Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings. Cousins is one of those QBs who regularly struggles in primetime games. In particular, he is 2-10 all-time on Mondays during his NFL career with 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in those games. The Vikings are 0-1 in primetime games this season, losing to the Eagles in Week 2, but that one wasn’t Cousins’ fault. He threw for 364 yards and four TDs that game, but the 49ers defence poses a more difficult challenge.
