How long does election uncertainty weigh on the economy?

If NZ First needs to be a late addition to the coalition mix, expect the process of policy compromise and culling to be extended into the second half of next month.

Gareth Kiernan is chief forecaster at Infometrics.

OPINION: A lot of business questions in the election lead-up focus on the possible pause in economic activity due to uncertainty before the polls. The common logic is that firms will wait to see how their operating environment might change post-election before committing to big investment or other spending decisions.

A lot of central government work also grinds to a halt because there’s no point starting a project that will be consigned to the scrapheap in three months’ time. But now that we’ve all been out and voted – with a by-election to go in Port Waikato – we can all get on with things again, right?

Not so fast! Although Saturday night’s result suggests that coalition negotiations between National and ACT will be a lot simpler than if NZ First was involved as well, special votes mean that Winston Peters is not entirely out of the equation. We won’t get certainty about the future direction of government until the final counts are in on November 3, and if NZ First needs to be a late addition to the coalition mix, expect the process of policy compromise and culling to be extended into the second half of next month.

Once the negotiations are done and dusted, the new administration will want to hurry things along, with a likely “100-day plan” and mini-Budget before Christmas so that key tax and spending changes can be implemented by April next year. National’s campaign has also emphasised its desire to fast-track key infrastructure projects and improve on Labour’s perceived lack of delivery throughout the last few years.

Infometrics chief forecaster Gareth Kiernan says once coalition negotiations are done and dusted, the new administration will want to hurry things along.

Chris McKeen/Stuff

Infometrics chief forecaster Gareth Kiernan says once coalition negotiations are done and dusted, the new administration will want to hurry things along.

But even for projects that are reasonably advanced in terms of planning and design, National is likely to find that hurrying these projects into the construction phase is easier said than done, especially given that resources in the infrastructure sector are still highly stretched. More broadly, implementing significant changes to government departmental priorities is like turning around an oil tanker – it’s a big ship, and it takes time for the effects of changes to become apparent.

What does the data tell us?

We’ve looked through GDP data around election time over the last 30 years to see whether there are any discernible trends in different parts of the economy. Our chart shows the quarterly growth rates for each variable from one quarter before the election to two quarters after. We’ve limited our analysis to elections since 1996, on the basis that MMP provides more post-election uncertainty than first past the post. We’ve also excluded 2020 because the pandemic had such a massive effect on many of the economic outcomes that year.

Government consumption shows the most consistent quarterly differences, with strong spending growth during the election quarter followed by a lack of growth the following quarter. Rather than a cynical last-ditch attempt by the incumbent administration to boost economic activity at election time, this pattern is more likely to reflect genuine spending associated with the election. For example, this year’s estimated election cost of $180 million could add as much as 0.9% to government consumption in a three-month period.

Weakness in household spending around and immediately following election time is perhaps more pronounced than might have been expected, and it suggests that consumers go into their shells around polling time. Government investment spending looks to be weaker after an election, although these quarter-to-quarter figures are notoriously volatile, so it’s difficult to draw a particularly firm conclusion from the data. Business investment also tends to be quite noisy, but the data doesn’t seem to support the orthodox thinking that firms pause their capex spending around election time.

DAVID WHITE/STUFF

‘We, here, have done the impossible,’ Winston Peters tells supporters as election results come in.

Maybe it’s just a Wellington thing

Sometimes in Wellington, we probably overstate the short-term effects of government on the broader economy. This viewpoint reflects central government’s outsized role in Wellington, with the sector’s share of the region’s economy almost three times the size of its share nationwide.

If there’s one indicator that demonstrates the government-centric nature of Wellington, it’s house prices. In our chart, ignore the fact that house prices have risen faster around the times Labour has been elected, compared to National, because that gap will largely be due to other influences on the housing market. Instead, look at Wellington’s performance compared to the rest of the country for the year around polling time.

Across the last 11 elections, house prices in the Wellington urban area have outperformed the nationwide average by 3.3 percentage points when a Labour-led government has been elected, but they have fallen behind the nationwide average by 4.4 percentage points when a National-led government has been elected. There are clear effects on confidence in the region’s housing market, and presumably its job market as well, depending on which party is calling the shots.

Things are unlikely to be any different after the 2023 election result. National’s aim to reduce departmental spending suggests that Wellington’s property market and, by extension, its economy will struggle to keep up with the rest of the country in coming months.

With the election now over, any pause in activity around the rest of the country while the make-up of the next government is confirmed is likely to be more short-lived than in Wellington. Nevertheless, it will still take time for political leaders to truly stamp their mark on economic outcomes during the next three years.

England 30-24 Fiji: Owen Farrell kicks Steve Borthwick’s side into Rugby World Cup semi-finals

Owen Farrell’s magical boot led England into the Rugby World Cup semi-finals at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille on Sunday

Owen Farrell helped boot England into their sixth Rugby World Cup semi-final after surviving an incredible late fightback from Fiji at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille on Sunday.

England topped Pool D with four victories from four, but they took on a Fiji side in the last eight who inflicted their last defeat in the build-up to this tournament.

Steve Bortwick’s side appeared to be cruising into the semi-finals at 24-10 ahead deep in the second half but the Pacific Islanders mounted a sensational fightback to level matters with 10 minutes to go before Farrell’s boot rescued England and secured a 30-24 victory.

England – Tries: Tuilagi (14) Marchant (23). Cons: Farrell. Pens: Farrell (11,34,38,54,78). Drop goal: Farrell (72).

Fiji – Tries: Mata (28) Ravai (64) Botitu (68). Cons: Lomani, Kuruvoli (2). Pens: Lomani (20).

George Ford, the architect of England’s critical pool-stage victory over Argentina, dropped to the bench with captain Farrell moving from inside centre and Joe Marchant joining Manu Tuilagi in midfield.

Elsewhere, Harlequins playmaker Marcus Smith was preferred to Freddie Steward and made only a second Test start in the full-back position.

After a cagey opening 10 minutes, referee Mathieu Raynal handed England the chance to open the scoring in front of the posts after Fiji were penalised for not rolling away and Farrell duly obliged.

Moments later, England went through two phases from the lineout before the dangerous Tuilagi spun away and dived down in the corner for his 20th try for his country and an 8-0 lead after Farrell hit the post with his conversion.

Scrum half Frank Lomani made up for an earlier missed penalty by converting with his second attempt to get Fiji on the board but it was the men in white who continued their bright start when Joe Marchant barrowed over from close range with Farrell putting over the extras for a comfortable 15-3 lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the Fijians when wing Vinaya Habosi caught Smith full in the face with his head and was sent to the sin-bin for 10 minutes.

However, despite being down to 14-players, No 8 Viliame Mata produced a moment of magic to outfox the England defence with a neat show and go to cross over the whitewash. Lomani converted to reduce the deficit to 15-10.

Farrell and England’s breakdown success delighted Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, in the stands, by completing a penalty hat-trick as further cracks appeared in Fiji’s discipline, and Borthwick’s side led by 11 points at the break.

Both sides hardly charged into the quarter-finals in a blaze of glory, but they were desperate to grasp a glorious opportunity to progress, especially as Fiji upped the tempo at the start of the second half.

Despite looking dangerous, Fiji were continually being beaten to the breakdown and were caught offside. Farrell slotted over his fourth penalty to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The Pacific Island nation recorded their first-ever win over England when the two teams last met – a 30-22 triumph in a World Cup warm-up match at Twickenham back in August and some wonderful rugby enabled them to close the gap to within punching distance when Peni Ravai burst through to get over the line with Kuruvoli converting.

Fiji were not going quietly and in an incredible turnaround they sliced England apart to score again through Vilimoni Botitu under the posts with Kuruvoli’s second successful conversion tying things up at 24-24 with 10 to go.

A pulsating finale continued at pace, with Farrell then dropping a goal to put England three points ahead, and after Ben Earl’s stunning break resulted in another Farrell penalty, Fiji were unable to pull off a late miracle.

The vagaries of the draw presented a less-than-perilous route to the semi-finals for England and, having now navigated it, they will be out to seize their opportunity at reaching a fourth World Cup final next Saturday.

Farrell: We had to find a way to win I Borthwick: We are determined to be successful

Owen Farrell, speaking to ITV

“It was what we expected. They are a tough, tough team that can turn it on in the blink of an eye. I thought we started the game really well. We really got after it in that first half.

“We always knew Fiji were going to have some good patches and they did. To find a way to win and get through to the semi-finals is a big step forward but we know we have plenty of work to do.”

England head coach Steve Borthwick, speaking to ITV

“I thought the players were magnificent. The whole squad has worked very, very hard to get that result tonight,” said Borthwick.

“I have to give immense credit to Fiji. They played tremendously well tonight and they have had a fantastic World Cup. I am obviously delighted we found a way to win that game.

“I thought the vast majority of the game we were in control. There was a spell in the second half were they scored two back-to-back tries.

“What I was really pleased with was how the players handled it thereafter.

“A lot has been written about these players and this England team over the last period of time and what I see is a group of players that can handle and rise to these occasions.

“We don’t forget that many people said that we weren’t going to make it out of the group and then there was firmness that we would lose tonight.

“These players will be written off again I am pretty sure but when I see these players, I see a fantastic group of people who are determined to be successful, determined to be the best versions of themselves.”

Fiji coach Simon Raiwalui was nearly in tears in his post-match interview. “This is just the beginning for this Fiji team,” he says. “I couldn’t be prouder.”

Struggling With Bills? 27 Practical Tips for Finding Support in Crisis | Wealth of Geeks

We aren’t all financially comfortable with a sizeable nest egg to fall back on. Sometimes, many of us find our saves struggling and panicking. Have you ever sat and stared at your bank account and a stack of unopened mail and said, “I can’t pay my bills?” It’s stressful, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Many of us have been in that same position. Let’s look at the best tips for getting out of financial trouble.

1. Research Where Can You Turn To Get Help With Money

Assuming you have exhausted the simple resources like asking your friends, neighbors, and family, and it just wasn’t in the cards, where do you go next?

If you put aside the time frame and urgency issue, you can start by looking online for local resources and ways to get help through free grants or other assistance. This is an excellent place to start, and you might be surprised at how much assistance you can get in the short term.

2. Don’t Ignore Your Creditors

When people don’t have the money to pay their bills, they stop opening their mail. They can’t bear to look at the balance they owe, but knowing where you stand is essential. Ignoring your bills and creditors will worsen when your services are shut off or your debts get sent to collections.

Instead, contact your creditors and explain your situation. Let them know if there are extenuating circumstances like temporary unemployment, unexpected medical bills, or something similar. Tell them you want to pay your bills, but you need some flexibility right now, like a lower minimum payment, an extended due date, or a reduced interest rate.

3. Sell Your Stuff

It’s time to hustle and find some additional money. Sell your junk. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Your old music CDs, video games, books, clothes, etc., can get you some fast cash.

Even items that don’t work can have value…as many people will purchase electronic or mechanical items for parts. It’s true that this isn’t a sustainable long-term solution, but it does help you dig out of this current financial mess.

4. Ask for a Raise

Ask your boss for a raise if you think you deserve one. Make sure you point out all the contributions you’ve made and the reasons you’re worth more. It doesn’t hurt to ask; it will at least give you some feedback on whether you’re progressing at work and will see more money soon.

5. Start a Side Hustle

Get a second job or a side hustle to earn additional money. Even a part-time gig at a fast food restaurant 10 hours a week will make you several hundred a month and maybe some free food. Or work for yourself by babysitting, dog walking, selling crafts, or one of the hundreds of other ways you can make a little extra dough.

When you find that additional income, ensure it goes toward paying off your bills and doesn’t get squandered. Some side hustles take time, but it gives you a longer-term solution to your financial woes.

6. Track Expenses and Start Budgeting

making a budget to manage expenses

Do you have a budget? If not, track your expenses to see your monthly spending. If you already have a budget, you may need to manage it better. Your income can only go so far, and when overspending on credit cards or other debt payments, disaster approaches.

You may find that you’re spending all or even more than you make. Your income may be irregular, like earned on commission, tips, bonuses, or overtime. Any of these factors can make your finances easier to manage.

7. Ditch The Credit Cards

Eliminate using all credit cards until you can pay them off in full. After that, only use credit cards when it is figured into your monthly income plan, or don’t use them at all. (If you do wind up using a credit card, make sure it has no annual fee, a good rewards program, and a low-interest rate.)

8. Reduce Utility Bills

Save on your utilities; wear a sweater in winter and open the windows in summer to save on energy costs if you’re paying for them.

9. Save on Transportation Costs

That car you drive at $300-$400+ per month may also have to go. Do some research to see if you could trade in your car or find a less expensive option. Right now, reliable transportation is more important than fancy.

And while you’re at it, shop around on your car insurance to see where you can save.

10. Save Money on Groceries

Find ways to reduce your grocery bill. Shop the sales, use coupons, plan your meals, and make smart choices to reduce your food budget while still eating healthy.

11. Get Help With Critical Expenses

When you’ve fallen into hard financial times and need help, paying for monthly expenses like food and utilities is often your first and most significant concern. Many public assistance programs are in place to help struggling people.

Programs work like loans for utilities, which you will sometimes have to repay. However, many others are gifted as grants through various organizations.

12. Low-Income Resources

getting financial help

There are local, state, and federal resources that can help eligible low-income individuals struggling to pay their utility bills. Most of these assistance programs are temporary and meant to help you out of a challenging situation and back onto solid financial footing. However, some programs are offered as grants, which means they can be paid.

There are wide ranges of trusted financial opportunities, including assistance for personal bills, transportation, and medical needs offered as benefits or grants.

13. LIHEAP

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) block grant is funded by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and provides two basic types of services.

Eligible low-income households receive financial assistance to offset the costs of heating and cooling dwellings and weather their dwellings to make them more energy efficient by local governmental and nonprofit organizations.

14. Other Assistance Programs

Many states offer additional assistance programs, in addition to LIHEAP, that can help you and your family. They also help you save energy and reduce your electric bill through easy and sometimes free energy-saving methods. Please contact your state websites to find out where help is offered.

15. HRRP

The Heating Repair & Replacement Program is another federal government-funded program offered in your local community. It may be called slightly different names in each state but functions similarly in most parts of the country. It is often used in conjunction with the weatherization program.

16. Weatherization Assistance Program

This program offers weather stripping, wall and attic insulation, minor home repairs, and furnace tune-ups. There may be other related energy-saving measures that will help people lower their electric bills and save money. It can repair or replace heating units, appliances, furnaces, and other home upgrades.

17. Free Air Conditioner

Free air conditioning units and window fans are available during the summer months. The assistance is usually provided as part of LIHEAP, or charities such as the Salvation Army offer them to low-income families. The free air conditioning units are often combined with emergency utility bill assistance to help keep a struggling family cool.

Many states, particularly those in the south and west, provide financial assistance during the summer to pay cooling and electric bills. Emergency cash assistance, grants, and more, such as free box fans or air conditioning units, may be offered.

18. Get Your Electricity Back On

Person screwing in a lightbulb

If your electricity has been shut off, it can be difficult for you to reconnect in a timely manner. You can use assistance programs to get your power turned back on. The programs are offered at the federal and state levels for aid with electric, utility, water, or heating bills.

You can even receive grant money to pay electric or energy bills, apply for emergency hardship funds, and get assistance paying any deposit to reconnect utility service.

If you use oil for heating, you can qualify for free or low-cost fuel. The same is true for homes that are heated by firewood. Government programs and charities will help low-income households that use this as a heat source.

19. Balanced Payment Plans

working out a balanced payment plan

Many utility companies offer these to help pay and manage your bills. These plans provide the customer a way of paying their electric bill at a monthly flat rate year-round so families can budget for the seasonal spikes in their heating or cooling costs.

The payments you need to make do not dramatically increase during the winter or summer months. For example, if your annual electric bill is $1,800, you may pay a flat fee of $150 per month rather than a higher amount in the summer or winter.

20. Contact Your Utility Company

A struggling customer should always contact their utility company to find out about any programs they offer. Call the customer service number on your bill. They even may cancel the charges you owe if you are income-qualified.

21. Get a Home Energy Audit

Utility companies will offer HEA’s as a free service or provide it for a very low fee. These audits will help homeowners identify where improvements or updates can be made to reduce energy usage. Some utility companies will even contribute towards fixing the home if you meet the income criteria.

22. LIHWAP (Low Income Household Water Assistance Program)

Many companies offer payment plans, rebates, or financial help with your water bill. They also receive grants from charities that allow them to provide free audits to help reduce your usage.

23. Dollar Energy Fund

The Dollar Energy Fund is a charitable program that has existed for almost 30 years and relies on donations. Hundreds of thousands have received grants for paying their utilities from this fund. The fund is available in West Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, California, Connecticut, Texas, Kentucky, and Virginia.

24. Operation Roundup

This assistance program, offered by many utility companies, provides cash grants to help pay utility, heating, and other bills. You can also get help with rent, medical expenses, or food. Many small utility company cooperatives also provide Operation Round Up.

25. Telephone and Internet

person using call phone outside

Low-income families can receive discounts on their monthly phone bills from Lifeline, free cellular phones, or even savings on their high-speed cable internet connection. Some of these services are combined with other electric bill programs as well.

26. Free Legal Assistance

getting legal advice

Most states have non-profit law firms that can advise low-to-moderate-income individuals, the elderly, and the disabled on their legal rights regarding utility service disconnections. Priority is given to the elderly and people with medical conditions. Lawyers can provide free legal advice to help individuals keep their power on.

27. Solve The Long Term Problem

person with savings in a piggybank

To make sure you can pay your bills in the future and even start to set aside some savings (especially that all-important emergency fund), you need to live within your means. Simply enough, you either need to earn more, spend less, or, most likely, do both.

If your earnings fall short, consider your current circumstances to determine where to improve. Do you need more education? Can you get additional training to supplement your skills at work?

If you’ve settled for a dead-end job, it may be time to start looking for another opportunity while still employed. It’s always easier to find work when you’ve still got a job.

But don’t ignore the other half of the equation. Reducing your expenses should be an ongoing effort. The lower your spending, the more flexibility and security you will have.

Star Trek Nemesis: Revisiting the Worst Star Trek Movie Ever

2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis was a financial and critical failure, but is it as bad as Trekkies remember? Yes. Yes it is.

Star Trek: Insurrection was a disappointing entry for the Next Generation crew – both creatively and at the box office. It made $117 million worldwide, which was only about $30 million less than Star Trek: First Contact, but the budget was pretty hefty, thanks mainly to salaries, with the film costing $70 million, making it the most expensive Trek movie to date. While the studio likely eeked out a profit once it hit home video, the margins were slim. Thus, Paramount, which still hoped the franchise could bounce back in another movie, opted to shake things up for the ambitious Star Trek Nemesis. Yet, all the pricey talent they went after, at the sacrifice of some of TNG’s key creative players, could save the movie from being an all-out disaster that ended the Next Generation crew’s adventures on the big screen for good.

Jump back to 1998. Star Trek: Insurrection wasn’t a hit, and many assumed that was it for the Next Gen crew. It looked, for a while, like the whole franchise was dying, with Deep Space Nine ending in 1999 and Star Trek Voyager ending in 2001. Neither show was popular enough for the crew to cross over to the big screen. Paramount, for their next Star Trek show, tried to dial down the “trek-ness” of the franchise, making a prequel show called Star Trek Enterprise, starring Scott Bakula, which, in a bonehead movie, had a widely mocked Diane Warren song left over from the movie Patch Adams as its theme.

It was this mentality that infected Star Trek Nemesis. Some of the ideas were sound. Paramount hired screenwriter John Logan, who had written Gladiator, to pen the script, which would center around Picard meeting a younger clone of himself that the Romulan Empire created. While it wasn’t being called a “farewell” film, it did seem like Paramount was looking for a way to scale down the cast in future instalments. The movie opens with Riker and Troi being married, with them departing at the end of the film so that Riker can command the Titan. Brent Spiner also got his long-held wish to have Data get killed off, in a fashion, with him them finding an android resembling Data called B-4, that Data manages to download all of his memories into before dying. A bit of a cop-out.

It was the choice of directors that really sunk Nemesis. While Jonathan Frakes had become a good director for the studio, they decided to bring in an “action” director for a fresh look at the material. Rather than an A-lister, they chose Stuart Baird, who was best known as an editor. He had directed Executive Decision and The Fugitive sequel U.S Marshalls. Still, he also had a reputation as a fix-it editor who could save movies in trouble. The legend goes that Baird managed to whip Paramount’s Tomb Raider into shape and that the directing job on Nemesis was his reward for saving that troubled film.

Whatever the case, Baird admitted to not knowing much about the franchise. He made a point of not consulting with Frakes on-set, with the excuse being that he was fishing his own directorial vehicle for Paramount, the teen film Clockstoppers. In the commentary track for Insurrection, Marina Sirtis calls Baird an idiot. At the same time, Levar Burton said he didn’t even bother to watch Next Generation episodes and thought Geordi was an alien. Baird got into hot water when the DVD came out, admitting on the commonalty track that he couldn’t remember the names of his actors – which I’m sure went down like a lead balloon on set. Maybe that’s why Frakes, in a masterful moment of pique, refused to shave his back for a shirtless love scene with Marina Sirtis, forcing the studio to CGI out his back rug.

Star Trek nemesis tom hardy

Of everyone, though, the one who got dealt the unkindest cut was poor Will Wheaton, who was supposed to make his triumphant return as Wesley Crusher. Well, he’s back – sort of. You can see him smiling in the Troi-Riker wedding sequence, but he has no dialogue. He was essentially an extra. Ouch.

If the movie is remembered for anything now, it’s for being one of Tom Hardy’s first movies. He plays Shinzon, the young clone of Picard, and indeed, he looks a lot like a young Patrick Stewart here, as it was before he started packing on muscle. It did less than nothing for his career, with Hardy admitting that he took the movie failing to heart, diving into booze, drugs and depression, and finally pulling himself together years later when he reinvented himself for Bronson. To note, Stewart himself thought Hardy’s career would never take off, only to be proven very wrong in the years to follow.

So how does Star Trek Nemesis hold up? Not well. It was bad in 2002, and it’s bad now, with Baird a lame choice to helm a Trek film. I understand why he was brought on, as they wanted to make the movie harder-edged and more action-packed, which is why there’s a car chase early in the film. Still, the choices here are bizarre, including a weird moment where Shinzon psychically rapes Troi, and the rest of the cast, including Worf, Crusher and Geordi, have nothing to do in the film. At least Riker gets to fight the secondary bad guy, Ron Perlman’s Reman Viceroy. The CGI is quite bad here, considering this came out the same year as The Two Towers, although the saving grace is that Jerry Goldsmith is around to contribute his final motion picture score before passing away.

Star Trek nemesis tom hardy

In the end, Nemesis was a box office disaster. It only grossed $67 million WORLDWIDE, having come out opposite steep competition that included not only The Two Towers but also Die Another Day and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Next to those movies, Star Trek seemed old hat, and Patrick Stewart went merrily back to the MCU to continue playing Charles Xavier, a role that finally allowed him to escape some of his Star Trek typecasting.

Indeed, with the franchise later rebooted by J.J. Abrams, it looked like the Next Generation crew was going to go out with a whimper, but the rise of streaming led to a new show, Star Trek Picard, which, after two mediocre seasons, ended with a season-long arc that reunited the crew for one last adventure that many said played out like the last great Next Generation film. But what about that Trek reboot? We’ll talk about it in our next Trek Revisited episode!

A Week on From the Hamas Terror Attack – What Now?

Whenever a terror attack occurs, as a broadcaster, I try to report facts and avoid hyperbole. Had I been on air last Saturday morning, I would have done just that. But when I finally got on air, on Monday evening, we knew the facts. We knew what had happened. It was beyond doubt that Hamas had murdered 1400 Israeli men, women and children. I decided that “on the hand this, and on the other hand approach” was not one I was prepared to take.

Evil had been perpetrated by child killing terrorists against a people, some of whom had living memory of the holocaust. But it wasn’t just an attack on innocent Israeli civilians, it was a deliberate attack on the Israeli state. It is part of Hamas’s constitution that they want to see not just Israel obliterated, but every Jew killed. And yet some people, mainly on the left, in this country give them a free pass because they object to the way Israel has treated Gaza. It is undeniably true that Israel has made some terrible mistakes in the past in its treatment of Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank, but nothing, nothing can excuse the perpetration of a terrorist act which in numbers killed in proportion to the population, was three times worse than 9/11. I’m sick of hearing people half heartedly condemning last Saturday’s attacks then adding the word ‘but’. There is no ‘but’. You either know the difference between right and wrong or you don’t. That’s why I have used the phrase ‘I stand with Israel’, and to show my support I have added an Israeli flag to my Twitter profile, just as I did with Ukraine’s.

That doesn’t mean, as some have suggested, that I support the deliberate killing of innocent civilians in Gaza. Of course I do not. One Twitter idiot even accused me of supporting genocide. Wow. But I do support Israel’s right to defend itself and its people, and I do support any attempts to root out Hamas terrorists in Gaza and kill them. All of them.

Netanyahu, a politician I do not have a lot of time for, and have criticized many times in the past, has said Israel is at war. That was a totally understandable response to what has happened. Warfare, though, has rules. William Hague, in an excellent article in The Times on Wednesday, warned that Israel should be careful to avoid losing the very public support which had initially be expressed. He said that in the past Israel had done just that, by going in too hard with its allies finding it difficult to defend some of its actions. Punishment and retribution attacks, while understandable, should be avoided at all costs. Targeted attacks on targets to destroy Hamas infrastructure or personnel are totally justifiable and defendable. But let us not be naïve innocents here. In acts of war there are always civilian casualties. Steps should be taken to minimize those casualties, but those who say that one civilian casualty is a reason for not taking any action are demonstrating they are pacificists, rather than defenders of peace. History teaches us that if you don’t stand up to dictators or terror groups, it just emboldens them. Had people with these views won the battle of public opinion in the 1930s and 1940s I’d be writing this newsletter in German.

British Jews are now fearful too. Antisemitic attacks have multiplied by a factor of ten over the last week. I read out an email from a listener called Emmanuel at the end of this week’s For the Many podcast. It moved me to tears.

“I can’t express to you enough the pain of having read the comments made by some, incapable of denouncing such crimes, of naming a terrorist a terrorist, or trying to establish equivalences between the actions of a terrorist group and a state, rather to state an obvious fact: what happened in the morning of October 7 was a crime against humanity and the biggest attempt at ethnic cleansing of the Jews since the holocaust.

“Others have chosen silence. Those who defend all causes, social justice warriors in a permanent fight for equality, those with whom I fight against all inequalities and discrimination, ecology, feminism, have disappeared for 4 days. This leaves many thinking that when it comes to Jews, universal principles don’t apply. The deafening silence of our non-Jewish friends is causing an unspeakable pain to many, especially me, a Jew who has always worked to defend the Palestinian cause and the fight against the occupation. To see videos scrolling online with people from all over the world chanting “gas the Jews” without any of my friends wondering how their Jewish friends are doing is devastating and deeply revealing. To have the biggest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust without any of my friends wondering how their Jewish friends are doing is devastating and deeply revealing. This reaction shows the extent to which Jews, not for the first time in history, are alone in the face of hatred and terror. This indifference chills me.”

What chills me is that in 1945, when we discovered the full horrifying truth about the Nazi death camps, we vowed to never let it happen again. And yet this weekend we allowed a pro Palestinian march to proceed through central London with people (some, not all) chanting “Death to Jews”. And the police stood by doing nothing. Is it any wonder that British Jews are worried?

The people who chant these things are more concerned about debating the method of Hamas murdering babies than the fact that they were murdered in the first place. “Of course Hamas didn’t behead babies”, they complain to anyone who repeats the report that they did. The fact that it is undeniable that the babies were indeed murdered though, doesn’t seem to horrify them at all. I find this incomprehensible.

They don’t condemn the taking of hostages. In fact they don’t like this mentioned at all. There is a simple reason for this. They know that the hostages are in Gaza, and that very fact gives Israel all the justification it needs to launch a ground invasion, just as any other country would do in order to find and rescue its citizens.

There is little point at this moment of speculating about how peace can be restored. We don’t know how this is going to play out. Will Hezbollah become involved? Syria? Is this all part of a wider Iranian plot to destabilise the region in order to prevent Israel and Saudi Arabia becoming closer, as seemed to be the case only ten days ago?

You simply cannot expect Israel to sit round a table with people who want their destruction. The Palestinian Authority is so weak and devoid of leadership that it has almost descended into irrelevance. There was a time that it spoke for the West Bank and Gaza. That hasn’t been the case for a long time. The only hope is that at some point, a Mandela type figure emerges, who can unify the Palestinians and is someone who the Israelis can do business with. There is little sign of that happening at the moment, but one can but hope.

Israel’s strategy now should at least bear in mind the effect of its actions on any potential deal with Saudi Arabia. If a deal with the Saudis can still be achieved, that would indeed be a bitter blow to Hamas, and in turn Iran.

Mountains, Shine, and Falls: Blairsville GA Girl’s Getaway | Wealth of Geeks

The North Georgia mountains are a popular escape, but what city do you pick for a girl’s weekend? The answer is Blairsville GA. Exhilarating outdoor fun, moonshine, and picturesque waterfalls are just a few of the city’s highlights. Centrally located near North Carolina and an easy destination to drive to from the Atlanta airport, Blairsville is the girl’s weekend getaway that you’re craving.

There’s an adventure around every corner in Blairsville, and there’s no better way to explore it than with a group of girlfriends. It’s a haven for nature lovers with plenty of lakes, hiking trails, and waterfalls. Even the famous Appalachian trail winds through Blairsville. When you’re ready to recoup from the excitement, Blairsville has plenty of local, chef-owned restaurants to enjoy and craft cocktails to drink. It’s the perfect mountain getaway for a weekend; a few days is enough time to complete all these must-dos!

The Best Blairsville GA Girl’s Getaway Ideas

Unless you’re exploring the downtown Blairsville area, be prepared for a bit of driving between destinations, with steep elevation changes at times. Weather can change quickly in the mountains, so it’s best to plan for any weather.

Brasstown Bald

Whether you’re looking for a fitness challenge or want to take the shuttle, Brasstown Bald is Georgia’s highest peak. It towers at 4,784 feet above the Chattahoochee National Forest. Take the short (but extremely steep) hiking path to the top of the mountain, or hop aboard one of the continuous shuttle buses for a shortcut to the top. The top of the mountain has views of four different states: Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina

A museum at the top of Brasstown Bald has tons of Georgia history. Climbing to the top is worth the moments of zen you’ll find as you admire one of the state’s best views. I love going in October for a view of peak leaf season. However, the panorama views are worth it every time of the year.

Shop & Dine in Downtown Blairsville

A Blairsville, Georgia, girl’s weekend is complete with shopping and good eats. The downtown city square was built around its iconic Historic Union County Courthouse in 1899. Park around the square and enjoy an afternoon of boutique shopping.

That courthouse building still stands in the center of downtown Blairsville. Find local fudge shops, clothing boutiques, and farm-to-table southern restaurants to enjoy. The local Cabin Coffee Co. is the perfect spot for a morning cup of joe, and Lucky’s Taqueria is the best way to cap off a girl’s day. They’re just two of the great dining options in Blairsville.

Kick back and grab a craft cocktail at Grandaddy Mimm’s Distilling Co. Half distillery and half bar; Grandaddy Mimm’s is a Blairsville GA must-do. Their cocktail menu changes seasonally with fresh flavors and concoctions featuring their famous moonshine.

County music star Tommy Townsend owns Grandaddy Mimm’s Distilling Co. He uses family recipes passed down by his grandfather Jack McClure – a notorious bootlegger from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Grandaddy Mimm’s moonshine is created in Blairsville, and guests can tour the facility. Learn the history of moonshine, watch the distilling process, and see how it’s bottled. After the 30-minute tour, pick eight samples for $5 to taste!

Hike Helton Creek Falls

After a short drive through the North Georgia backroads, you’ll stumble across one of the most beautiful waterfalls. Helton Creek Falls is a two-layer waterfall that only requires a quarter-mile hike to see its beauty. The trail accesses the lower falls at both the bottom and the top of the falls and ends at the bottom of the upper falls.

There are several spots along the trail to catch your breath and many unique Instagram-worthy photo spots. Wear your hiking shoes, girls, and pack a delicious snack to enjoy at the top of the falls.

Odom Springs Vineyards

Enjoy the lush rolling hills of North Georgia at the family-owned Odom Springs Vineyards. Farming is a way of life in Appalachian history, and the Odom family celebrates that with over 60 acres of farm for their vineyard. Discover dry reds and whites, red blends, and even a blush wine as part of the Odom Springs Vineyards label.

The vineyard is a perfect place to relax, and they also have the Odom Springs Lodge to stay at. The lodge accommodates up to 12 guests and is near the area’s best attractions.

Located inside Vogel State Park, Trahlyta Falls is another family-friendly hike beginners can do. The hike is an easy 0.8-mile trail that begins at the Visitor Center. It circles the picturesque Trahlyta Lake and offers clear views of Blood Mountain.

After a short descent to reach a set of wooden stairs, the observation platform at the bottom gets you right up close to the 110-foot-tall waterfall. If you’re looking for a slightly less adventurous way to see Trahlyta Falls, check out the view from Gainesville Highway. Pullover just before the main entrance to Vogel State Park and admire the falls from just outside your car.

If your dreamy North Georgia adventure is more tame, check out the beautiful Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway. Also known as Hwy 348, the road stretches 23 miles from Helen to Blairsville GA.

Drive along and admire the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain vistas. It’s one of the most beautiful drives in the fall season. Take advantage of the three roadside scenic overlooks along the highway, which offer picture-perfect views (especially during fall foliage season).

Mountain Crossings at Neel Gap

The Civilian Conservation Corps built Mountain Crossings, which started construction on the stone building in 1934 and finished in 1937. Coincidentally, the same year, the Appalachian Trail was completed. Since 1983, it’s been an outfitter and gift shop along the Appalachian Trail. The coolest part of Mountain Crossings is the only spot where the Appalachian Trail passes through a building. Hikers venture through this local tourism destination on their way to Maine.

It’s an exciting place to learn about hiking and check out the Appalachian Trail. Girlfriends can visit Mountain Crossings for the spectacular views, listen to incredible stories, and find a unique souvenir. If you feel more adventurous, walk a few miles of the Appalachian Trail!

Streets ‘reek of blood:’ Gazans run out of time after Israel’s evacuation deadline – Egypt Independent

CNN  —  Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been fleeing south through the battered streets of Gaza after the Israeli military told them to leave northern areas of the densely populated strip.

Parts of the south are becoming even more crowded and overstretched, Gazans say, as waves of Palestinians abandon their homes in the wake of Israel’s statement, which came ahead of an anticipated ground assault by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

More than half of Gaza’s 2 million residents live in the northern section that Israel said should evacuate. Many families, some of whom were already internally displaced, are now crammed into an even smaller portion of the 140-square-mile territory.

The IDF said Saturday it would allow safe movement on specified streets between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. local time (3 – 9 a.m. ET). Residents were advised to use this window to move from the northern Beit Hanoun to Khan Yunis in the south – a roughly 20-mile distance of rubble-strewn streets.

The evacuation statement has been described by rights groups as well as some neighboring countries as a breach of international humanitarian law. Jordan’s foreign minister described it as a “war crime.”

The UN’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which was forced to move its central operations from Gaza City to a location in southern Gaza following the Israeli statement, on Saturday described the evacuation as an “exodus,” and said that “nearly 1 million people have been displaced in one week alone.”

The evacuation advisory came after Israel imposed a complete siege on Gaza in response to a brutal attack launched a week ago by Hamas, which left at least 1,300 dead in Israel.

At least 2,215 civilians, including 724 children and 458 women, have been killed in Gaza, according to the Palestinian health ministry, as the Israeli military continues to pound the territory.

Palestinians who fled south, and those who are still north, are rapidly running out of food and water. There is no more electricity, and those with fuel-powered generators will soon live in complete blackout. Internet access, through which residents communicate their plight to the world, is also shrinking.

Mohamed Hamed, a 36-year-old resident of Gaza City, moved southward to Nuseirat, a refugee camp some five kilometers north-east of Deir al-Balah – which he was told was safe.

Hamed fled the north with 30 family members, including his extended relatives, four children and his wife, who is over eight months pregnant.

“In this situation, we’re afraid that she goes into labor, and we wouldn’t know where to go,” he told CNN.

The family has no access to medical care and are crammed into a single apartment with no electricity, and quickly depleting food and water.

“There is no electricity, there is no water. Bakeries are working but these are their final hours, as the fuel they need is running out,” he said, adding that “the food we have may last us a day or two.”

Speaking to CNN by phone, Hamed said that Nuseirat is a small area yet has received large crowds of displaced Palestinians from the north. Drinking water is only available in mineral water bottles, he said, which are dwindling as crowds rush to stock up.

“Everything in supermarkets and shops was used up,” he said.

Shelling in Nuseirat is intense, but not as bad as it was in Gaza City, where neighborhoods were “entirely wiped out,” he said.

Hamed said that the time provided by the IDF for “safe passage” southward may not be enough for vast number of Palestinians that need to flee, and that some Gazans in the north refuse to leave fearing forceful displacement into Egypt.

For many, that would mean displacement for the second time. The majority of Gaza’s residents today are already refugees from areas that fell under Israeli control in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

“People are afraid of this, of being pushed to Egypt,” he said, adding that the airstrikes have been “horrifying,” with some areas being targeted for the first time despite the years of conflict between Hamas and Israel.

But not everyone in Gaza’s north has heeded the IDF’s call to move southwards. Palestinian journalist Hashem Al-Saudi and his family have only moved from east to west of Gaza City, which is among areas the IDF told civilians to evacuate.

Residents are forced to leave their homes to fill up water tanks, the 33-year-old told CNN by phone, which puts them at risk of being struck by Israeli missiles.

Food is scarce, he said, and may not last his 11-member family more than three or four days.

“I say this jokingly, but those who are on a diet are eating more than us.”

Al-Saudi says that not only do they have nowhere to stay if they moved south, but that the route itself is unsafe. “Even those who moved south were hit by airstrikes,” he told CNN.

“Nowhere is safe in the Gaza Strip, from Rafah (south) to Beit Hanoun in the north,” Al-Saudi said, adding that everywhere is targeted, including “homes, shelters hospitals and places of worship.”

“Everyone on this piece of land is targeted by the Israeli military, which from the start did not differentiate between civilian and soldier.”

CNN has geolocated and authenticated five videos from the scene of a large explosion Friday along a route for civilians south of Gaza City that Israel said the following day would be safe.

The videos show many dead bodies amid a scene of extensive destruction. Some of those bodies are on a flatbed trailer that appears to have been used to carry people away from Gaza City. They include at least several children. There are also many badly burned and damaged cars.

It’s unclear what caused the widespread devastation; the explosion occurred on Salah Al-Deen street on Friday afternoon. CNN has reached out to IDF for comment on any airstrikes in the same location.

“The situation is much worse than what you see on television,” he said. Many bodies remain unidentified, and corpses are being stored in refrigerators not made for storing human remains, Al-Saudi said.

“Streets are filled with rubble and reek of blood.”

The Israeli government launched a complete blockade on essential goods entering Gaza earlier this week, prompting warnings from human rights groups who say the siege is in violation of international law.

Israel, which administers most of the electricity, water, fuel and some of the food inside the Palestinian enclave, already imposes a stringent land, sea and air blockade, but used to permit some trade and humanitarian aid through two crossings that it controls.

Refaat Alareer, 44, a literature professor in Gaza City, said Thursday – before Israel told Gazans to evacuate – the shelves in his local supermarket are emptying every day. He has been able to buy cans of tinned tuna, adding that he avoided purchasing perishable goods because the lack of electricity means refrigerated food “will rot.”

Alareer, who lives with his wife and their six children, said his neighbors insist on leaving milk powder on the shelves – so that other parents can feed their own families.

“I’ve never seen people this disciplined,” he said. “I didn’t buy a single thing that is more expensive than it was last week.

“(What is) so beautiful about, you know, being in Gaza, being in Palestine, the solidarity.”

More than half of the residents in Gaza are food insecure and live under the poverty line, according to UNRWA. Alareer warned that blue collar workers, farmers and street vendors “will suffer the most,” from the blockade.

“We’re bracing for the worst. What happened is extremely genocidal in every sense of the word,” he added.

Aseel Mousa, a 25-year-old freelance journalist in Gaza, said she is unable to communicate with loved ones in other parts of the enclave, as electricity supplies diminish.

“We cannot connect with the world,” she told CNN on Thursday. “We hear the bombings, the air strikes and we don’t know where they are exactly.

“We cannot check up on our relatives who live in different areas of the Gaza Strip, we cannot reach them as there is no internet and there is no electricity.” She said on Friday that she relocated with her family from western Gaza to the south.

On Friday, Alareer told CNN he and his family see no choice but to remain in the north – despite Israel’s evacuation advisory – because they had “nowhere else to go.”

“Israel bombs (are) everywhere,” he said.

Gaza has already been under blockade since Hamas took control of the territory in 2007.

Egypt imposes a land blockade, while Israel imposes an air, sea and land blockade. The siege was completely tightened after Hamas’ attack on Israel a week ago, and the only remaining route into or outside of the Gaza Strip is the Rafah Crossing, which connects Gaza to Egypt’s Sinai.

While some aid has arrived in Egypt, it is yet to cross the border, which earlier this week was struck by Israel on the Palestinian side, according to Palestinian and Egyptian officials.

Egypt on Thursday stressed that its Rafah Crossing was however open, a claim CNN could not independently verify.

A Palestinian border official told CNN on Saturday morning that concrete slabs were being placed at the Rafah border crossing into Egypt, blocking all gates. The slabs were being placed by a winch visible on the Egyptian side of the crossing, the official said.

The official added that hundreds of Palestinians with foreign passports have been sat in the streets for hours, waiting to cross. “The gates are closed, and no one is being let through,” he told CNN.

CNN has reached out to Egyptian officials for comment.

Why is Japan seeking the dissolution of the controversial Unification Church? – Egypt Independent

Tokyo, Japan CNN  —  Japan’s government on Friday asked a court to order the dissolution of the Unification Church branch in Japan following the assassination of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022.

The government’s move comes after a months-long probe into the church, formally known in Japan as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.

The investigation followed claims by the suspected shooter, Tetsuya Yamagami, that he fatally shot Abe because he believed the leader was associated with the church, which Yamagami blamed for bankrupting his family through the excessive donations of his mother, a member.

Earlier in January, Japanese prosecutors indicted Yamagami on murder and firearm charges.

The government’s investigation concluded that the group’s practices – including fund-raising activities that allegedly pressured followers to make exorbitant donations – violated the 1951 Religious Corporations Act.

That law allows Japanese courts to order the dissolution of a religious group if it has committed an act “clearly found to harm public welfare substantially.”

The Tokyo District Court will now make a judgment based on the evidence submitted by the government, according to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.

This is the third time the Japanese government has sought a dissolution order for a religious group accused of violating the act.

It also sought to dissolve the Aum Shinrikyo cult, after some of its members carried out a deadly 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system, which left dozens dead and thousands injured, and Myokaku-ji Temple, whose priests defrauded people by charging them for exorcisms. The courts ruled with the government on both orders.

The Unification Church in Japan has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, pledging reform and labeling the news coverage against it as “biased” and “fake.”

On Thursday, it issued a statement, saying it was “very regrettable” that the government was seeking the dissolution order, particularly as it had been “working on reforming the church” since 2009. It added that it would make legal counterarguments against the order in court.

If disbanded, the Unification Church, founded by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon in South Korea in 1954, would lose its status as a religious corporation in Japan and be deprived of tax benefits. However, it could still operate as a corporate entity.

Experts argue that an order to disband the group completely could take years to process and could even risk pushing the entity’s activities underground.

The Unification Church became known worldwide for mass weddings, in which thousands of couples get married simultaneously, with some brides and grooms meeting their betrothed for the first time on their wedding day.

Public scrutiny of the church in Japan increased after Abe was fatally shot during an election campaign speech last July.

Abe’s alleged assailant told police that his family had been ruined because of the huge donations his mother made to a religious group, which he alleged had close ties to the late former prime minister, according to NHK.

A spokesperson for the Unification Church confirmed to reporters in Tokyo that the suspect’s mother was a member, Reuters reported, but said neither Abe nor the suspected killer were members.

Following Abe’s death local media carried a series of reports claiming various other lawmakers of the country’s ruling party had links to the church, prompting Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to order an investigation.

Kishida told reporters Thursday that ruling party lawmakers had cut ties with the religious group, amid concerns that the Unification Church had been trying to wield political influence.

Since last November, Japan’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs has questioned and sought to obtain documents from the Unification Church while also collecting testimonies from around 170 people who say they were pressured into making massive donations known in Japan as “spiritual sales.”

The practice involves asking followers to buy objects like urns and amulets on the grounds that doing so will appease their ancestors and save future generations, according to Sakurai Yoshihid, a religious studies expert at Hokkaido University.

CNN has contacted the Unification Church for an official comment but has not yet heard back.

This is not the first time the Unification Church has been at the center of a controversy.

Naomi Honma, a former Unification Church member, told CNN that between 1991 and 2003, she worked on a legal case called “Give Us Back Our Youth,” a lawsuit that alleged the Unification Church had used deceptive and manipulative techniques to recruit unsuspecting members of the public.

This, they argued, had the potential to violate the freedom of thought and conscience upheld by Article 20 of Japan’s constitution.

After a 14-year trial, multiple plaintiff testimonies and a 999-page report outlining the “mind control” process of the group, the trial had its moment.

The Sapporo District Court made a landmark ruling in favor of 20 former Unification Church members who had sued the group as part of the case. It ordered the Unification Church to pay roughly 29.5 million yen ($200,000) in damages for recruiting and indoctrinating people “while hiding the church’s true identity” and for “coercing some former members into purchasing expensive items and donating large amounts of money.”

In a separate controversy, between 1987 and 2021, the Unification Church in Japan incurred claims for damages over the sale of amulets and urns that totaled around $1 billion, according to the National Lawyers Network against Spiritual Sales – a group established in 1987 specifically to oppose the Unification Church.

Nobutaka Inoue, an expert on contemporary Japanese religion at Kokugakuin University, is critical of the techniques used by the church to recruit and raise funds. However, he also notes that some of its members felt happy and at peace after making donations to the Unification Church.

Some critics of the Unification Church say the government’s actions don’t go far enough as it could still operate as a non-religious group. One option for the government would be to seek a court order stripping the church of its corporate status, too, but experts say that could take up to two years to process.

Sakurai, the religious studies expert, cautioned that if the Unification Church loses its status as a religious corporation, it would no longer be under the control of Japan’s Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, making it harder to regulate its activities.

Sakurai pointed to the case of Aum, noting that after the sarin gas attack the Japanese government revoked recognition of the group as a religious organization but continued to regulate it through a new law passed in 1999 that authorized continued police surveillance of its activities.

But making a new law that would allow the government to continue to watch over the Unification Church’s activities – even if one could be passed – would not work as well, Sakurai warned.

“(Aum) only numbers over 1,200 members or so; however, the Unification Church has penetrated many layers of Japan’s society – some members are housewives, some work in factories, others are teachers, so the police cannot watch all the movements or activities of the Unification Church,” Sakurai said.

Some experts say Japan needs to do more to educate the public about non-traditional religions, which some see as having a rising influence in society.

Kimiaki Nishida, a social psychologist and chairman of the Japan Society for Cult Prevention and Recovery (JSCPR), pointed out that state and religion were separated in Japan following World War II, and the new constitution forbade teaching religious studies at school.

This made religion essentially a taboo topic, Nishida said, and to this day, religious education is not provided at elementary, junior, or high schools in Japan, unlike in most EU member states.

This, according to Toshiyuki Tachikake, a professor at Osaka University specializing in cult countermeasures since 2009, has left students – particularly at university campuses – vulnerable to being pressured into recruitment.

He and other experts say more should be done to educate young Japanese about religion.

“We need religious education in schools. Giving someone a broad understanding of different religions and their teachings allows them to make an informed decision on whether they want to join a certain group if a recruiter ever approached them,” said Tachikake.
