I have always seen a lot of scams in data entry jobs from home. Either they promise very high pay which is too good to believe or they ask for upfront payment before you start the job.
I have come across many virtual data entry jobs that promise to pay $70 per hour or so, which is quite high for data entry roles.
There are hardly any typing gigs that pay so high.
Why are there so many scams with data entry jobs from home?
It is quite evident that data entry or typing jobs are hard to get and many people look for them; especially they are the most wanted jobs for anybody working from home. They seem to be the easiest option to work from home for many.
However, it is possible to find legitimate typing opportunities online, though they are fewer and they might not be very high paying ones.
Are there any entry-level data entry jobs?
Below are some websites which offer data entry jobs from home, some of them are entry-level and some need experience. If you are just getting into data entry then first check freelancing websites like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer.com. They have some short gigs and pay per project.

Transcription – Become a transcriber from home and earn $15-$20 per hour.
Voice Actor – Use your voice to earn money and earn up to $200 per finished hour.
Proofreader – Top choice for flexible work and you can earn up to $50/hr as a freelance proofreader.
Here are some legit data entry jobs from home:
Quicktate
Quicktate is a company hiring remote typists to transcribe audio files, medical reports, legal notes, letters, and notes. It requires a background check, and you need to pass a quick test before getting hired. They don’t need any prior experience.
SpeakWrite
SpeakWrite hires independent typists for remote data entry jobs. You need to have a speed of at least 60 words per minute and with 90% accuracy. For general applicants, there is a requirement of a minimum of 1-year experience.
This role is available to only US and Canadian residents, and it requires a background check. The pay is .005-.006 cents per word. If your application is accepted, then you will be asked to take a typing test.

DionData Solutions hires home-based data entry clerks. It does not regularly hire, so it’s better to check the website for current openings. It pays per piece, and you need to have a speed of 60 wpm.

MTurk
Amazon’s Mechanical Turk is more of a micro tasks place with typing gigs also available intermittently. You might not make much from these, but it’s good extra cash.
The Smart Crowd
Lionbridge is the company behind The Smart Crowd. You need to take a short qualifying test before you start. The pay is around $.60 cents for 1000 characters, and this is an extra income option.
Clickworker
Clickworker is a bit similar to Mechanical Turk. It has many other micro-tasks apart from typing projects, like data annotation, writing, translation, etc. The pay is per task. There is an assessment after you apply.
Hubstaff Talent
If you are looking to find some freelancing jobs without having to pay any fees and search for companies and businesses that recruit freelancers, then Hubstaff Talent is the place to go. It is a free platform where freelancers can register and find companies to work with.
Xerox

Cass Information Systems is a financial company hiring data entry clerks for data entry and data verification. You will have to attend on-site training before you start remote work. The company has an A+ rating on BBB.

Working Solutions is a call center company hiring for positions like customer care, sales consultant, and data entry. Founded in 1996, this is the most trusted company if you are looking for remote jobs. The application process involves filling out an online form and taking an assessment test. Once you pass the test, you can fill up all your details and start applying for the programs suitable to you. The hours are flexible and you can choose to work a minimum of 15 hours a week to 40 or more.
FlexJobs
If you are searching for legit data entry jobs, then FlexJobs is a great place. The jobs get thoroughly researched and are scam-free (something you need to focus on when looking for data entry jobs). Skills needed for a data entry job
- Typing skills are vital if you want to apply for data entry jobs. Experienced data entry workers are expected to type around 70 wpm. Accuracy is also an essential part of your typing skill. You should brush up on your typing skills before you start applying.
- Having basic computer skills like knowledge of word processors, excel, and other database software is required.
- As with other jobs, having good communication and written skills are desirable.
- Data entry is a repetitive task, which means you need a lot of focus and concentration to give your best to the job.
Tips to remember before you apply
There are a couple of things you should keep in mind when applying for data entry jobs:
- Some roles do ask for good typing speed, so check your typing speed before applying.
