The women’s flyweight division has been in full focus over the last several weeks and was back in the spotlight on Saturday, with Rose Namajunas and Amanda Ribas facing off in the main event of this weekend’s fight card at the UFC APEX.
Competing in the 125-pound ranks for the second time, Rose Namajunas showed she is very much a contender in her new surroundings, earning a unanimous decision victory over the Brazilian with a poised, even-keeled effort to close out the show.
Leaning on her clean footwork, crisp boxing, and ability to control the action on the canvas, “Thug Rose” was the more economical and efficient of the two on the feet, and neutralized Ribas’ attacks off her back when the two hit the ground.
While Ribas certainly had her moments, she was just a half-step behind the two-time strawweight titleholder for much of the fight, especially on the mat, where she was unable to offer any real threats and struggled to work back to her feet.
Having now garnered her first win at flyweight, Namajunas should enter the rankings when they update next week and become another name to consider in the already crowded title conversation.
Champion Alexa Grasso and former champ Valentina Shevchenko have been tapped to coach opposite one another on the forthcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter before resolving their differences in a third consecutive fight later this year, meaning there is time for a clear hierarchy in the contender ranks to be established before that one transpires.
Erin Blanchfield and Manon Fiorot are set to headline against one another next weekend in Atlantic City, with many believing the victor should be next in line to challenge for the title. Blanchfield enters with a 5-0 mark in the UFC and a 12-1 record overall, having earned consecutive victories over former title challengers Jessica Andrade and Taila Santos in 2023, while Fiorot has earned six wins in as many UFC starts and 11 straight overall, having bested Namajunas last time out and vanquished former title threats Katlyn Cerminara and Jennifer Maia prior to her win in Paris last year.
In addition to Namajunas, who could debut as high as No. 5 in the rankings, Maycee Barber has been making a strong case for contention as well, having posted her fifth straight victory earlier in the month at UFC 299 by out-hustling Cerminara. With each having fought recently and the two likely to be stationed close to one another in the rankings — Barber currently sits at No. 4 — a matchup between the two would make a great deal of sense and could fill a similar main event role on a future Fight Night event.
Beyond that six-pack of standouts, there is more talent continuing to rise the ranks that merits attention, including the Brazilian triumvirate of Natalia Silva, Ariane Lipski, and Karine Silva, Tracy Cortez, Miranda Maverick, and Canadian Jasmine Jasudavicius.
Flyweight will remain front and centre next weekend and should continue to mandate a tremendous amount of attention going forward as we build towards Grasso-Shevchenko 3 later this year.

Karl Williams pushed his record to 3-0 in the UFC and 10-1 overall with a grinding win over Justin Tafa in the co-main event. While the Australian heavyweight buzzed him a time or two, Williams was consistently able to get the fight to the canvas and keep it there, grinding out long stretches to secure the victory.
Middleweight Edmen Shahbazyan and bantamweight Payton Talbott each turned in tremendous efforts in the middle third of the main card, the former finishing in the first, while the latter got things done in the opening seconds of the second.
Early in his fight with AJ Dobson, it looked like Shahbazyan was going to get finished, as he got put on rubber legs by his fellow Dana White’s Contender Series alum. But he showed his mettle, steadying himself before clipping Dobson and sending him to the canvas, where he swarmed and put him out with a series of heavy shots.

After feeling underwhelmed with his debut performance in the UFC — a third-round submission win back in November — Talbott entered his matchup with Cameron Saaiman looking to make a statement, and that he did. In the opening, heavyweight prospect Mick Parkin maintained his pristine record, collecting his third win in as many trips into the UFC cage, out-hustling TUF winner Mohammed Usman.
But the fight everyone was talking about was the flyweight contest between a pair of members of the DWCS Class of ’23.
The second fight of the night between newcomers Andre Lima and Igor Severino was shaping up to be a barnburner until the contest was paused and eventually halted after Severino bit Lima, resulting in his getting disqualified.
