With the trade deadline one week away, the Toronto Blue Jays have the potential to make some noise.
If the Blue Jays want to make a run at winning the American League East, MLB Network insider Jon Morosi thinks Toronto must make some key additions — and he has Chicago White Sox second baseman Tim Anderson and Detroit Tigers right-hander Michael Lorenzen as potential targets.
Anderson, a two-time all-star, has seen his numbers drop this year (.241/.281/.283) with no homers and 17 RBI, but he has picked up the pace recently, hitting .417 in his past seven games.
If the Blue Jays land Anderson, Morosi thinks 2023 all-star Whit Merrifield can see more time in the outfield.
“(Anderson’s) full-season numbers are not good and not going to be good just because he struggled for a long time, but he’s been a lot better since the break and still has really good bat-to-ball skills,” Morosi said. “I believe the bigger games at this time of year is when you need someone who just puts the ball in play and can move the line and move the runner and Tim does that.”

Lorenzen was Detroit’s lone all-star this year. He is 5-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 17 starts.
“I think Lorenzen with Toronto would be a great fit,” Morosi said. “I think he can start and if all of a sudden things going well with (Hyun Jin) Ryu or (Alek) Manoah, Michael can be back there in the bullpen.”
Lorenzen was mostly a reliever with the Cincinnati Reds from 2016-21 before becoming a starter with the Los Angeles Angels last year.
Morosi says Cardinals starters Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery also could make sense for the Blue Jays. He notes the Tampa Bay Rays, who are second in the AL East behind the Baltimore Orioles and ahead of the Blue Jays, also are looking for starting pitching.
The Orioles are 2.5 games up on Tampa and 6.5 ahead of the Blue Jays, who hold down the third and final wild-card spot.
A problem for the Blue Jays when it comes to making deals could be their prospect system, which is not as highly rated as some fellow contenders — especially Baltimore.
Meanwhile, Morosi wondered whether hard-throwing reliever Nate Pearson could be a trade chip for the Blue Jays. He was recently demoted to triple-A Buffalo.

“Is there a team out there that’s looked at him and says ‘you know what, I think he could start,’” Morosi said.
The former top prospect was a starter before injuries started adding up. The Blue Jays have used him out of the bullpen the past three years.
Morosi wondered aloud if Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington, a former Blue Jays executive, could have his eye on Pearson. He also mentioned the Tigers and White Sox as possibilities for Pearson with the Blue Jays looking for a win-now starter in return.
“I think the Blue Jays have a number of needs that are moderate needs,” Morosi said. “They don’t have a ton of glaring needs, but they are needs. If they want to catch a team with all the energy and excitement the Orioles have right now, they’ve got to get better.”
