NHL Power Rankings: What’s the vibe at the quarter mark for all 32 teams?

Once we’re one-quarter of the way through an NHL season, there’s a tendency to start examining hard figures.

How many points is the Art Ross leader on pace for? How many teams on the outside of the playoff picture at this point in the year typically climb back in? Is league-wide scoring up or down from past years?

All those number-driven topics have merit and, frankly, you can find all kinds of stuff on the web — starting with this fine website — that address those queries.

In this particular space, though, we’re going to lean more on gut than melon. With all but two teams — Washington and Ottawa — having played their 20th game of the season, we’re devoting this edition of the power rankings to something entirely unscientific: A good ol’ fashioned vibe check.

With 25 per cent of the season in the books, here’s how it feels around all 32 teams.

1. New York Rangers (16-4-1) The Rangers have been a rock-solid squad with very strong special teams. Adam Fox returning after a month-long absence on Wednesday should help this club — which ranks middle-of-the-pack in terms of goals per game (3.29) — score more, too. Party on.

2. Los Angeles Kings (13-4-3) The vibes are always horrible for the opponent in Kings games because L.A. is such a smothering outfit. Nobody is giving up fewer goals per game than the Kings at 2.35.

3. Boston Bruins (14-4-3) We should have asked last week, before the B’s endured their second, third and fourth regulation-time losses of the season. Despite the small skid, things are pretty great on an Atlantic-leading team that saw its top two centres retire in the summer.

4. Vegas Golden Knights (14-5-4) The feeling is certainly great around the goalies. Adin Hill and Logan Thompson have combined to provide the second-best five-on-five save percentage in the NHL (.935).

5. Colorado Avalanche (15-6-0) The Avs are cranking things up, with seven wins in their past eight games. They’re averaging 4.6 goals per game during that stretch while giving up just 2.0.

6. Dallas Stars (13-5-2) The Stars entered the season as a team many thought could win the Cup, and nothing has happened that would dispel that notion. Still, you’d love to see Jason Robertson — sitting on six goals — get on a nice heater.

7. Florida Panthers (13-7-2) There’s probably a soft case to be made that the Panthers’ season has been more impressive than anybody’s, given their top-two D-men — Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour — just joined the team less than two weeks ago. That, combined with fighting off any hangover from appearing in the Cup final, is really impressive.

8. Vancouver Canucks (15-7-1) Do a quarter-mark awards check and you’ll find the Canucks have players firmly in the mix for the Hart (Quinn Hughes), the Art Ross (Hughes, J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson), the Vezina (Thatcher Demko) and the Rocket Richard (Brock Boeser). Any questions?

9. Washington Capitals (11-6-2) Alex Ovechkin isn’t really scoring and the power play scored zero — zero! — goals in November on 28 opportunities. Yet, somehow, a Caps club many predicted would again miss the post-season is feeling more than OK, sitting third in the Metro with games in hand on every squad in the division.

10. Toronto Maple Leafs (11-6-3) The Leafs are probably the best example of a team where things feel just kind of … off? The record is fine; William Nylander is out of this world and Auston Matthews is on pace for 57 goals, yet there’s no denying — from Mitch Marner not being his elite self to an already questionable defence corps being banged up — things just don’t seem right with the Buds.

11. Detroit Red Wings (11-7-3) The vibes were pretty good in Detroit even before Patrick Kane joined the mix. It officially feels like making the playoffs is now a possibility.

12. Carolina Hurricanes (13-8-0) They’re getting there. The Canes are 10-4-0 in their past 14 after a six-game roadie to kick off the year turned in a 2-4-0 mark. Recovering from knee surgery, Andrei Svechnikov didn’t play his first game until Oct. 27 and scored his first goal on Sunday. (He was actually a late scratch ahead of Carolina’s win in Philadelphia Tuesday night). Frederik Andersen is also dealing with a  blood-clotting issue, which leaves the goaltending duties to Antti Raanta and Pytor Kochetkov, neither of whom have a save percentage over .900. Still, throw out a recent 8-2 thrashing at the hands of Tampa Bay and it seems like the Canes are rounding into form.

13. Winnipeg Jets (12-7-2) Two days before the season began, Jets fans likely felt as though they were cheering for — at best — a bubble playoff team that might have to trade its No. 1 centre and/or No. 1 goalie this season to prevent losing either Mark Scheifele or Connor Hellebuyck for nothing as UFAs next summer. Well, one day before the season began, both guys re-upped on eight-year deals and the Jets have the inside track on a playoff berth in the West.

14. Tampa Bay Lighting (10-8-5) Andrei Vasilevskiy has been back for only two starts, so the vibes in Tampa will probably uptick based on his presence alone. If GM Julien BriseBois can find a way to acquire an impact defenceman, the mood will improve that much more.

15. Philadelphia Flyers (11-10-1) Philly fans had basically been told to brace for a tanking year, yet here they — with pretty legit underlying numbers — holding down a playoff spot one-quarter of the way into the season. That’s probably got some Flyers fans delighted, while others might be lamenting the chance to add a top-three draft pick.

16. Pittsburgh Penguins (10-10-1) Tense. After the Penguins missed the playoffs for the first time since 2006, this season began with a serious sense of urgency. We’ve seen two coaching changes in the NHL this season and it feels like we’re a four-game Penguins skid from a third.

17. New Jersey Devils (10-10-1) The idea this team could miss the playoffs was inconceivable before the season, but injuries to both Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes changed the calculous. Both are back, but it’s still panic time — or very close to it — in Jersey.

18. St. Louis Blues (11-9-1) The mood has certainly improved this month. St. Louis scored a microscopic 1.86 goals-per-game in October — worse than everybody, save San Jose — but have bumped that up to 3.36 in November, which at least puts them in the middle of the pack.

19. Nashville Predators 11-10-0 Two weeks ago, this team was ahead of only Edmonton and San Jose in the Western Conference standings. Today, they occupy a wild-card spot thanks to a six-game run. Of course, much of that has to do with Juuse Saros finding his game of late. The ceiling still might not be too high in Nashville, but making the playoffs is back on the table.

20. Buffalo Sabres (10-10-2) Tage Thompson is injured and the team is on the outside of the playoff picture. That makes for some all-too-familiar bad vibes in Buffalo. However, if Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen can stay on a hot streak — undefeated in his past three games, with a .941 save percentage — there would be a huge spike in happiness.

21. New York Islanders (8-7-6) A seven-game losing streak had some people wondering about big change, but nothing of the sort happened. This squad gives stale vibes harder than any other organization.

22. Arizona Coyotes (10-9-2) I mean, it’s never great times in the desert. But having a teenager such as Logan Cooley in the mix is invigorating and Lawson Crouse — with 10 goals in November — is only one off the league lead for the month.

23. Edmonton Oilers (8-12-1) Let’s live in the here and now: Connor McDavid has 12 points (!) in his past three games and if the Oilers can turn a three-game winning streak into a seven-game run, they’ll actually be back to .500 — and, in the West, that gets you a playoff spot.

24. Montreal Canadiens (10-10-2) Juraj Slafkovsky has started collecting points recently and, in a year when nobody expects Montreal to make the playoffs, that determines the mood of the fanbase as much as anything.

25. Calgary Flames (9-10-3) We’re just starting to dip our toe into NHL trade season and the Flames — with some legit players on the verge of free agency — could be the squad everything revolves around. Change is in the air.

26. Seattle Kraken (8-10-5) Some stops are needed to make Seattle feel better. Like last season, the team’s five-on-five save percentage ranks in the bottom third of the league.

27. Ottawa Senators (8-9-0) From the Shane Pinto suspension to the Pierre Dorion firing, the Sens have to be in the running for worst vibes out there. This was a playoffs-or-bust year and it’s skewing hard toward the latter.

28. Columbus Blue Jackets (7-13-4) Nobody entered the season with worse vibes thanks to the Mike Babcock fiasco and things haven’t really improved from there. Despite better results lately, it’s still a pretty miserable scene in Ohio.

29. Anaheim Ducks (9-13-0) The ups and downs are fine because the team is so young, and all you have to do is watch Mason McTavish, Leo Carlsson and Pavel Mintyukov play to feel fantastic about where it is going.

30. Minnesota Wild (6-10-4) The Wild are 1-0 under John Hynes, but the fact they’ve already had a coach fired tells you all you need to know about this season. Among other things, Minny needs Kirill Kaprizov to start scoring and Filip Gustavsson to start stopping.

31. Chicago Blackhawks (7-13-0) Even with Connor Bedard’s rookie brilliance, it feels like there’s a black cloud over this franchise.

32. San Jose Sharks (5-15-2) A record as bad as the Sharks is also inherently hopeful. The vibe basically comes down to what happens at the draft lottery seven months from now.

ABOUT THE MATCH

Nigeria will host Silvéria Nédio tutored Cape Verde in the first leg of the qualifier at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Thursday, November 30, 2023 by 4pm before travelling to the western coast of the African continent for the return leg in Praia on December 5.

The Nigeria women’s national team reached this final stage of the qualification series following the withdrawal of Sao Tome and Principe Women’s national team from a second-round fixture, back in September 2023.

For Cape Verde to reach this final qualifcation round, they defeated Liberia 6-2 on aggregate in September 2023.

The WAFU A Women’s Championship finalists have seen their reputation soar significantly in 2023 and will add more weight if they upset the Super Falcons to book a 2024 WAFCON ticket.

Whereas, Cape Verde are ranked 133rd in the world and 19th in Africa, the Super Falcons of Nigeria occupy 32nd place in the world and are the best in Africa.

With 101-places separating both teams, it is Nigeria who are favourites to qualify for another WAFCON tournament but should be wary of this free scoring Cape Verde Women’s national team that have scored 19 goals in their last six games while conceeding only 4 goals.

The aggregate winner of the match books qualification for the 2024 Women;s Africa Cup of Nations tournament which will be hosted by Morocco.

TEAM NEWS

Super Eagles of Nigeria Stand-in coach, Justin Madugu will be without some key players.

FC Barcelona star, Asisat Oshoala headlines this list which includes, Michelle Alozie, Halimatu Ayinde, Jennifer Echegini, Ifeoma Onumonu and Ashleigh Plumptre who has not played for the team post 2023 women’s world cup for personal reasons.

Coach Justin Madugu will be banking on experienced names like goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, Atletico Madrid forward Rasheedat Ajibade, Sevilla midfielder, Toni Payne and Racing Louisville of USA striker Uchenna Kanu to lift his young charges past Cape Verde.

For Cape Verde, no fewer than 11 foreign-based players who ply their trades in the Portuguese and Spain have been invited by Coach Silvéria Nédio to face Nigeria.

The teams top-scorer and most capped player, Irlanda Lopes ( 27) of Portuguese club Amora headlines the Cape Verde player list.

Other foriegn based players available for Cape Verde are defenders Leonilde Rodrigues (25) of Portuguese club Amora and Adriana Semedo (24) of Real Zaragoza, Spain; Forwards Ivania Moreira ( 30) of Racing Power, Melatcha (23) of Portugal Damaiense, Evy Pereira (29) of Racing Power and newly invited duo, Letícia dos Santos of Sport Club Mirandela, Portugal and Netherlands-born Jolina Amani (24) of FC Braga.

Midfielders Kleydiana Borges (28) of Vitória de Guimarães, Eleia Vieira ( 23) of Portugal Amora and Sasha Wahnon ( 26) of Portugal Amora complete the professional players called up to do battle with the Super Falcons of Nigeria.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Nigeria’s stand-in coach Justin Madugu and midfielder Toni Payne say the Super Falcons would not underrate their opponents, who are ranked 133rd in the world by FIFA.

Madugu said “Gone are the days when people play football with names, and when you hear a particular country, people assume they are not a football country without us knowing how much they have invested into their game.

“Over the past three years, Cape Verde have greatly improved, and they have invested so much in their game. The first major tournament they performed in was in WAFU in 2020 and they came fourth. This year, they also did well getting to the final and only losing to Senegal by just one goal.

“People do not realise they have as many as 11 of their professional players playing in Portugal, they have that experience and the home-based players at home are coming from two major teams so they have the advantage of having that understanding since they have been together for quite a while.

He continued ” You will not just assume that it will be a stroll in the park, certainly, we are not taking anything for granted, look at the results across Africa now and you can’t take anybody for granted, if you do that, it’s at your own peril.”

“We all know what is at stake, the players themselves know what is at stake, the players that are here, you can see that they are not taking anything for granted and the ones that are not here, we know they are also prepared.

“You must put in every effort to ensure that you win, no one is just going to come to the field and just allow you to get whatever you want, they will put up a fight, so you  must be ready for the fight so that at the end of the day, you get the result you deserve.”

On the absence of some key players like Asisat Oshoala, the coach added , “We are without a few regular players for various reasons but we are not here to dwell on that. The Super Falcons’ team remains the Super Falcons anytime, any day, and anywhere. We have players in camp who will do justice to the badge and get us the qualification ticket to the AFCON.

“Surely, we would have wanted a couple more days for the team to train together, but the fixture is the fixture and the window is the window, and we just have to make do with what we have and get the best out of the arrangement. Everyone in camp will play their part for the Super Falcons to qualify for Morocco 2024.”

For midfielder Payne, the Falcons will be wary of their not too popular opposition.

“I haven’t heard much about them, they are a little bit unknown in terms of how they play. We will see some videos to know more about them,” Payne told NFF TV.

”We just build on what we normally do and focus on ourselves. Our way of playing is keeping the ball. We can’t afford to take them for granted.

“We believe if we have the ball it will be difficult for the opponent to score. We will try and stick to our plan and get a win.” she concluded.

Arsenal 6-0 RC Lens: Gunners through to Champions League last-16 as Group B winners after stunning first half

Arsenal cruised through to the Champions League last-16 as group winners after a breathtaking first half saw them beat Lens 6-0 at the Emirates.

The pressure had been turned back on the Gunners by PSV, whose late comeback win against Sevilla in the early kick-off meant Arsenal needed a point to qualify for the knockout rounds.

And they answered the call emphatically. In fact, it took just 13 minutes in the first half for Arsenal to dismantle their opponents, who had beaten them 2-1 in the reverse fixture in October.

Kai Havertz (13) began the glut, scoring in his second successive game, before Gabriel Jesus (21) doubled. Bukayo Saka (23) – continuing his fine form in the Champions League this season – bundled home the next, but the best came from a fine, solo effort from Gabriel Martinelli (27).

His effort was perhaps matched by Martin Odegaard’s (45+1) brilliant strike on the stroke of half-time, whipping home a thunderous volley. Jorginho (86) then rounded off a statement Arsenal performance from the penalty spot after European debutant Abduqodir Khusanov was penalised for handball.

The result sees the Gunners through as Group B winners with 12 points, with PSV joining them in the knockout rounds. They face each other in the final group game in a fortnight’s time. Lens, meanwhile, have been knocked out of the Champions League.

Reflecting on the performance after the game, Mikel Arteta said: “It was a genuine dream. We had a chance to qualify today and we’ve done it in a really convincing way against a really good side. The team from the beginning showed a lot of aggression and determination to go for the game.

“It’s great we’re able to win in this way and we showed at home not to concede any goals and score a lot which is a positive factor. The players need to believe we can do that against big opponents.”

Brilliant Bukayo

  • Bukayo Saka is the third player on record (2003-04 onwards) to both score and assist in three consecutive home games in the UEFA Champions League, after Karim Benzema (4 in 2011-12) and Luis Suárez (3 in 2015-16).
  • Bukayo Saka is the first Premier League player, and second across Europe’s big-five leagues (also Florian Wirtz), to reach 10 assists in all competitions this season.
  • Bukayo Saka is the first English player to assist three or more goals in a single Champions League season for Arsenal.

How Arsenal blew Lens away

Image:
Martin Odegaard scored a fine goal late in the first half

A 13-minute blitz at the start of the first half saw Arsenal into an unassailable lead. Takehiro Tomiyasu had already sent a number of fine crosses into the area, and the Lens defence almost dealt with this one.

But the looping ball was instead nodded down by Jesus, with Havertz incoming to rifle home past Brice Samba. There was a brief VAR check for offside, but the goal stood.

Paul Merson reacts after Gabriel Martinelli put Arsenal 4-0 up inside 28 minutes against Lens in the Champions League

For the second, Bukayo Saka was the creator. He cut in from the right, with the Lens defence needing two attempts to muscle him off the ball. But after the second, the ball rolled into Jesus’ path. He dummied two defenders before sweeping home.

Team news headlines

  • Arsenal made two changes from the weekend’s win at Brentford.
  • David Raya came in for Aaron Ramsdale, while Kai Havertz replaced Leandro Trossard.

Three minutes later and Saka was on the scoresheet himself, marking the fifth anniversary of his Arsenal debut. Havertz’s initial shot was well-saved by Samba, but the 22-year-old was in the right spot to see the ball hit him on the legs and into the back of the net.

Martinelli was not to be left out on the scoring frenzy, adding Arsenal’s fourth in the 27th minute. It was a sensational solo goal, initially picking up a raking pass from Tomiyasu on the left wing, before driving into the area and firing home.

Player ratings

Arsenal: Raya (6), Tomiyasu (8), Saliba (7), Gabriel (7), Zinchenko (7), Odegaard (8), Rice (8), Havertz (8), Saka (8), Jesus (8), Martinelli (8).

Subs used: White (7), Kiwior (7), Nelson (7), Jorginho (7), Nketiah (n/a).

Lens: Samba (5), Gradit (6), Danso (6), Medina (6), Frankoweki (6), Mendy (6), Samed (6), Haidara (5), Sotoca (5), Fulgini (6), Wahi (6).

Subs used: Machado (5), Thomasson (5), El Anyaoui (5), Khusanov (4), Pereira Da Costa (5).

Player of the match: Bukayo Saka.

Lens began to find their feet between goals four and five – with the latter coming on the stroke of half-time. It was a lightening quick break from Saka, who fed Tomiyasu on the overlap. It was another fine cross into the area from the Japan international, with Odegaard incoming to volley home a superb effort to round off an equally as brilliant first half.

The second half was an exercise in game management for Arsenal, which they executed to perfection. Lens registered no shots on target after the break as the Gunners came away with a clean sheet intact.

Jorginho added a late sixth from the penalty spot

But there was a sixth goal, which came after a fairly lengthy VAR review for a penalty. It initially appeared to be focused on Khusanov’s unintentional elbow into Martinelli, but it was in fact the ball hitting the Lens defender’s arm as he held it across the Arsenal forward’s chest that was penalised for handball.

Jorginho lined the spot kick up for Arsenal, coolly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way as the Gunners cruised into the last-16 with a game to spare.

Merson: Arsenal will be feared in the Champions League

Sky Sports’ Paul Merson on Soccer Special:

“I said at the start I thought they are big players in this tournament. No one will want to play them.

“They clicked tonight – and when they start well they’re hard to beat. They will go a long way in this tournament and they’ll be right up there in the Premier League title race.

“Havertz is a confidence player and he’s playing with confidence right now. I thought he was the best player on the pitch tonight. He was elegant, he picked the right passes and made the right decisions. He’s a top player. I don’t think he’s playing in the right position but he’s still a top player.”

Arteta: We scored some wonderful goals

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to TNT Sports:

“We had the chance to qualify, to be top of the group and I think we’ve done it in a beautiful way.

“It has to be [one of the best first-half performances he’s seen], when you score five goals in the first half in the Champions League against a really good side, the boys deserve the credit, they were really good.

“You can become really sloppy and there were parts in the second half when you start to see different behaviours but the team stayed really focused. We haven’t conceded a goal in the Champions League at home so it’s good, good stats.

“We used the spaces really well, we were really efficient and scored some wonderful goals.”

Jesus: We went full gas!

Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus to TNT Sports:

“From the start we were amazing. We go full gas.

“The team performance was top – now we have to keep going because on Saturday we have another big one.

“Playing at home, our fans’ support is always amazing and they push us. Qualifying first is important, so congratulations to the whole team.”

Opta stats –

  • Arsenal’s 6-0 win is the biggest ever victory by an English team against a French opponent in European competition.
  • Arsenal’s 4-0 lead within 27 minutes was the joint-fastest an English side has ever scored four in a UEFA Champions League game, along with Manchester United v Brøndby IF in November 1998 (who went on to win the competition that season).
  • Arsenal became the first side in UEFA Champions League history to have as many as five different scorers (excl. own goals) in the first half of a match in the competition.
  • Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus became the first player to score in each of his first four UEFA Champions League appearances for an English team (four goals).

What’s next?

Patrick Kane hopes to make Red Wings debut in seven to 10 days

New Red Wings forward Patrick Kane says he hopes to make his Detroit debut in the next seven to 10 days, per Dan Rosen of NHL.com on Wednesday.

Kane, who signed a one-year, $2.75-million deal with the Red Wings on Tuesday, took the morning skate with Detroit before the team’s Wednesday game in New York against the Rangers.

Kane finished last season with the Rangers after a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Kane, who turned 35 on Nov. 19, was an unrestricted free agent rehabbing from hip resurfacing surgery in June. He has been skating since August and told The Associated Press in September that he was starting to feel like his old self again.

The three-time Stanley Cup champion with Chicago and 2016 league MVP chose Detroit over a handful of other interested teams, including his hometown Buffalo Sabres, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the reigning Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers.

Per Rosen, Kane said he has been doing full-contact drills for the past 45-60 days and has been pain-free.

Red Wings coach Derek Lalande told reporters he plans to try the four-time all-star on a line with former Blackhawks teammate Alex DeBrincat.

Kane is attempting to become only the third player to come back to the NHL from the invasive hip operation, following defenseman Ed Jovanovski and centre Nicklas Backstrom. Jovanovski played only 37 games afterward, and Backstrom recently stepped away from the Washington Capitals 47 games into his attempt amid concerns about how his artificial left hip was holding up, with a return this season unlikely.

The surgery, which tennis star Andy Murray also had, involves dislocating the upper end of the thighbone, trimming it, capping it and removing cartilage before putting it back in place. Kane’s expected recovery and rehab time was set at four to six months.

Dinesh Karthik Slams Fifty As Tamil Nadu Beat Baroda In Vijay Hazare Trophy Clash | Cricket News

Veteran Dinesh Karthik was back at his vintage best to smash a quickfire half-century as Tamil Nadu overcame a jittery start to down Baroda by 38 runs in a low-scoring group E match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy domestic one-dayers, in Mumbai on Wednesday. Put in, Tamil Nadu were reeling at 52/5 when the skipper dig in with all his experience to rescue the team with a 51-ball 68 featuring nine fours and two sixes for his 40th List A fifty.

Tamil Nadu were soon reduced to 52/6, but Karthik held fort and put together a 75-run partnership with Shahrukh Khan (31; 39b) to help them go past 150.

Lukman Meriwala (4/21 from 7 overs) and Ninad Rathva (3/23 from 7.3 overs) were the pick of the bowlers for Baroda as Tamil Nadu’s innings lasted just 33.3 overs.

In reply, Baroda were shot out for 124 in 23.3 overs with T Natarajan leading the charge in his 7-1-38-4, while spin twins Varun Chakravarthy and R Sai Kishore sharing five wickets between them.

Padikkal on song

Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal continued with his silken touch in the format, scoring a 57-ball 93 not out to steer them to a seven-wicket win over Bihar in a group C contest at Ahmedabad.

Batting at No 4, Padikkal hit nine boundaries and five sixes as Karnataka made short work of Bihar, chasing down the 218-target in just 33.4 overs.

This was the India A batter’s fourth fifty-plus score in as many matches and he also has a century to his name to be the leading rungetter of the meet.

Openers Mayank Agarwal (28) and Ravikumar Samarth (4) got out cheaply but Padikkal and Nikin Jose (69) effortlessly took their team over the line.

Jagadeesha Suchith was the pick of their bowling as he returned with a tidy 10-2-27-3 as Bihar were restricted to 217/7 after Karnataka skipper Agarwal opted to bowl.

Sakibul Gani waged a lone battle for Bihar with a 100-ball 113 not out as wickets kept on falling around him.

Shashank slams 152, grabs five-for

Shashank Singh produced a spectacular all-round effort —152 (113b) and 5/20 in five overs — as Chhattisgarh thrashed Manipur by 88 runs in a group B match at Jaipur.

Chhattisgarh lost their top three for only 16 inside nine overs after Manipur chose to bowl, but thereafter it was all about their No 5 batter Shashank who smashed 12 fours and seven sixes in his counter-attacking knock.

Skipper Amandeep Khare (88) also provided a fine support as the duo consolidated after the anxious start.

After the pair’s departure, Ajay Mandal (43 not out; 20b) propped them to an imposing 342/6.

Shashank returned to shine with the ball, grabbing a five-wicket haul as Manipur managed 254/9.

Samson flops again but Kerala win

Sanju Samson failed with the bat yet again as he was dismissed for a five-ball one, but Kerala had it easy in defeating Tripura by 119 runs in a group A clash at Alur.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Azharuddeen top-scored for Kerala with a 61-ball 58 as he, along with Rohan Kunnummal (44; 70b), gave Kerala a strong start with a 95-run opening alliance.

But Kerala suffered a middle-order collapse to be bowled out for 231 in 47.1 overs. In reply, Tripura folded for 112. Akhin Sathar, Akhil Scaria and Vaisakh Chandran took eight wickets between them.

J&K stun Delhi

Jammu and Kashmir’s new ball bowler Rasikh Salam (4/23) dismantled Delhi’s top order to complement opener Shubham Khajuria’s splendid 109 as they stunned Delhi by 75 runs in another group C clash at Ahmedabad.

Put in, J&K rode on their skipper’s century to post 299/7. In reply, Delhi were bundled out for 224 in 45.3 overs. Lalit Yadav was Delhi’s top-scorer (67) but none of their other batters could provide any resistance.

At 4 pm, JD Cagulangan, Malick Diouf and Francis Lopez were already at the court minutes before Monteverde arrived at 4:23 but the coach didn’t go straight to his Fighting Maroons.

Instead, he took a few seconds to look at the players on the other side of the court; the Green Archers.

After a stellar sophomore year, the La Salle star is set to be crowned as the Season MVP in Game 2 of the Finals on Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Quiambao, who led the Green Archers’ return to the finals after a six-year drought, was the runaway statistical leader with 97.0 Statistical Points (SPs) way ahead of University of the East guard Noy Remogat, who tallied 85.93 SPs.

In a short series such as the UAAP Finals, Maroons, Archers set out to win Game 1and gain ‘twice-to-beat’ edge for crown

In a championship series that can be considered a sprint race more than anything else, there will be no doubt that University of the Philippines (UP) and La Salle will be looking to draw first blood whatever way possible.

“There’s definitely an advantage in winning Game 1,” La Salle coach Topex Robinson told the Inquirer after preparing his Green Archers long and hard on Tuesday afternoon. “Winning the first game makes you have a twice-to-beat edge to win (the championship). So, yeah, this is big.”

The Fighting Maroons will be coming into the series-opener with an advantage in championship experience, having made it here for the third straight season and winning it all two seasons ago.

MANILA, Philippines — Former La Salle players and coach Aldin Ayo are nothing short of impressed with the play of Green Archers star Kevin Quiambao, who is on his way to becoming the first local MVP in the UAAP since 2015.

Renren Ritualo, a key member of La Salle’s “four-peat” team from 1998 to 2001, believes Quiambao’s two triple-doubles in the season — the most by a player in the Final Four era — already separates him from the rest of the league.

“How could I describe him? It’s my first time to see a player tallying a triple-double in the UAAP. Even in the PBA, it’s really hard to do that feat, especially in the collegiate and amateur. It’s only 40 minutes and he made it look so easy, his triple-doubles, did it twice. It’s really impressive,” said Ritualo during the ring ceremony of the ‘four-peat’ and 2016 teams on Monday.

Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Newcastle: Eddie Howe says referee Szymon Marciniak had to be stronger to not award late penalty

Eddie Howe says Polish referee Szymon Marciniak needed to be stronger to stick with his on-field decision as Kylian Mbappe’s last-gasp penalty denied Newcastle a famous victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

The Magpies looked to be heading for a famous 1-0 win at the Parc des Princes as they battled their way through a second-half onslaught from the hosts until match official Marciniak awarded a spot-kick against Tino Livramento after a VAR review, allowing Mbappe to level in the eighth and final minute of added time.

Howe, who said in a television interview that the official had been placed under “extreme” pressure by the PSG players, labelled a decision which cost his side two precious points “poor” in his post-match press conference.

Asked if he felt a sense of injustice, he said: “Yes, I do. It wasn’t the right decision in my opinion.

Tim Sherwood and the Soccer Special panel are incensed as PSG are awarded a late penalty for an apparent handball from Tino Livramento

“There are so many things to take into account at that moment, the speed first. It was a ricochet that when it is slowed down, looks completely different to the live event.

“The ball hits his chest first, comes up and hits his hand. But his hand is not in an unnatural position, they [his hands] are down by his side, but he is in a running motion.

“I feel it is a poor decision and it’s hugely frustrating for us as you know how little time there is left in the game. There is nothing we can do about it now.”

Speaking to TNT Sports, Howe added: “What you don’t take into account with those replays is how quick the ball goes. It hits his chest first. If it hits his hands first, well it’s still not a penalty because he’s so close. But you can make more of a case.

“It’s not a penalty when it hits his chest first and then hits his hand which is low. I’m not allowed to sum it up. I can’t say my inner thoughts obviously [I’d get in trouble].

“I thought the referee was having a good game up until this moment. He had been strong.”

The pivotal moment arrived in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Ousmane Dembele attempted to deliver the ball across the Newcastle penalty area and saw it hit Livramento’s side and rear up on to the underside of his arm.

Mr Marciniak, who had earlier seen decisions not to award spot-kicks for an Anthony Gordon challenge on Achraf Hakimi and a shout for handball against teenager midfielder Lewis Miley upheld, was advised to review the incident and this time decided to award the penalty.

Howe: We’re still alive and fighting

Sherwood reacts to Alexander Isak’s goal as Newcastle stun PSG to take the lead at the Parc des Princes

The Magpies, who had taken a 24th-minute lead through Alexander Isak, defended it for grim life until the last-gasp controversy, although they needed Pope to be at his brilliant best on several occasions.

They now need to beat AC Milan at home on December 13 and hope PSG do not win away to Borussia Dortmund to progress.

Asked if that was something to cling on to, Howe, who celebrates his 46th birthday on Wednesday, said: “Yes, I think that’s absolutely right. In the next couple of days, that will become more relevant in our thoughts, I think.

“When the draw came out, it was the ‘group of death’ and I don’t think many people gave us a chance of qualifying from it and sitting here now, I’m a little bit frustrated that it’s not in our hands because when I look back at the two Dortmund games, I felt we could have done better in those matches.

“I don’t think it’s the time for that, I think it’s probably a time to be positive and to say that if we can beat Milan, then good things can happen from it.”

Analysis: Shocking call denies Newcastle

Sky Sports’ Adam Bate:

Paris Saint-Germain scored with their 30th shot of the game and a number of those were clear opportunities so Newcastle could well have been punished earlier than they were. But it was the manner of the equaliser, a gift from the officials, that will so grate.

Mbappe did not breach the Newcastle back line with a bit of brilliance. He was handed the ball and able to convert from the penalty spot not because of a Newcastle error either. Just a desperately cruel penalty call that required a VAR review to make it happen.

The decision to award a spot-kick for the ball striking Livramento’s arm after bouncing there via his chest would have been inexplicable regardless – there was nothing unnatural about his body shape. It is called running. But it was even stranger given earlier events.

There had already been a VAR check when the ball hit the arm of Miley having bounced off another body part. On that occasion, the referee was not asked to view the monitor. It was no penalty either but the reaction time for Livramento was even less.

“It is a disgusting decision,” said Tim Sherwood, watching the game for Sky Sports. “It is ridiculous. It is impossible.” Howe appeared bereft afterwards. So close and denied not by the genius of Mbappe but by a genuinely bizarre bit of decision-making.

Mbappe: We missed too many chances

Paris Saint-Germain goalscorer Kylian Mbappe on TNT Sports:

“It’s hard when you see the game. What happened was we had so many chances to win. In football you can be so much better but don’t win.

“I try to be at my best level every night. I think I could have done more for my team. I had many chances and didn’t score more goals.

“Too many chances. You watch many games and in the Champions League you have to score when you have the opportunity.”

PSG players surround referee Marciniak appealing

For PSG boss Luis Enrique, there was a mixture of relief and frustration on a night when his side created a host of chances but were unable to take any of them until Mbappe’s late intervention.

Enrique said: “Without a doubt, we played a very great game. We deserved to win. We played better than Newcastle. The result does not reflect what happened on the pitch.

“It’s not basketball. We are one of the teams in Europe that scores the most. Sometimes the ball doesn’t want to go in.

“Sometimes the game looked like table tennis. I couldn’t believe we couldn’t score, but we carried on despite the frustration.”

2024 NRL Transfer Centre: Dogs secure TENTH signing with Sharks swap, Roosters lock down tackle king

Canterbury’s utility-heavy recruitment drive has continued with the addition of Connor Tracey from the Sharks on a three-year deal.

Tracey, a utility who has played across the backline, will join the Dogs immediately with multiple media outlets reporting that youngster Michael Gabrael, who is yet to debut in the NRL, will go the other way.

Tracey impressed late last season at fullback but is a way down the pecking order at Cronulla behind established 1 Will Kennedy and youngster Kade Dykes, who is back on deck after an ACL injury ruined his 2023.

Canterbury have gone utility crazy this season. Alongside Tracey, who has split his NRL time across every position between 1-7, as well as the bench, they have added Blake Taaffe, a fullback or half, Jaemon Salmon, a second rower or five eighth, Kurt Mann, a lock or back, and Drew Hutchison, a centre, half or hooker.

“I’ve always admired Connor as a footballer and I’m very excited he has joined our club,” said General Manager of Football, Phil Gould.

“We are really looking forward to welcoming him to the squad.”

The Sydney Roosters have further strengthened their backrow options with a three year extension for Nat Butcher.

The 2019 Premiership winner will remain with the club until 2027 at least, taking him close to his 30th birthday. He was the NRL’s top tackler in 2023, racking up 44.3 per game, and has been almost ever-present for Easts since making his breakthrough in first grade in 2019.

“I’ve been part of the Roosters since I was 17 and it’s my home,” he said.

“We’ve got a great crew here and I love that everyone in the building is committed to the same goal, so I’m stoked that I’ll continue to be part of this Club.”

The Titans have added to their outside back options with the signature of Harley Smith-Shields from the Canberra Raiders.

Smith-Shields has featured as a centre, wing and fullback in the capital across 15 NRL games, and was largely out of the Raiders’ team from the first 6 weeks onwards despite starting the season for Ricky Stuart’s men.

He had been a major standout at junior level and is still just 23, and will look to rebuild his career on the Gold Coast. Smith-Shield missed the entire 2022 season with an ACL injury sustained in a pre-season trial match.

“Harley has shown he has a high level of football IQ and is looking for an opportunity to take his game to the next level,” said Titans coach Des Hasler.

“He adds to our outside back stocks and I’m confident he will be pushing to be part of our first grade squad on a regular basis.

“We look forward to welcoming him to the Gold Coast and are excited to see where he can take his football at the Titans for 2024 and beyond.”

Brisbane have re-signed rising second-rower Jordan Riki for another three years, just two days after also keeping fellow back-rower Brendan Piakura at the club until the end of 2027.

It comes as Cronulla secured prop Toby Rudolf to a new two-year contract that ties him down through 2026.

The 23-year-old Riki had a breakout season in 2023 where he played 22 games and established himself as a strong ball runner and iron clad defender during the Broncos’ charge to the grand final.

Piakura, 21, had earlier inked his own three-year extension in a week where the Broncos also extended veteran winger Corey Oates for one year.

Riki made a name for himself in 2023 with the improvement in his kick-chase game which developed into one of the best of all NRL forwards.

He has now played 67 first grade games for the Broncos after making his debut in 2020 during the low point of the club securing a maiden wooden spoon.

Coach Kevin Walters said Riki was a key figure in the Broncos roster now and a vital cog in the squad he was building for the future.

“Jordan bought into what we are building here at the Broncos from the very start,” Walters said.

Brisbane have finalised a deal for veteran winger Corey Oates to remain at the club for 2024 while also adding Dragons forward Jaiyden Hunt on a two-year contract.

Rudolf has re-signed with the Sharks through to the end of 2026, having been an integral part of the club’s forward pack since his NRL debut in 2020.

A toe injury restricted him to only 15 appearances this season, but he averaged 108 metres and 30 tackles and was particularly strong to start the campaign.

“I’ve been here for my whole NRL career and I’m going to be here for a little bit more of it,” Rudolf said.

“If I can finish here that’d be the icing on top. It’s a special place and I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

Meanwhile, the NRL has granted former representative centre Michael Jennings permission to be provisionally registered with the Roosters as he looks to make a comeback next year.

Jennings has not played since he was pulled from Parramatta’s line-up on the eve of the 2020 finals series for testing positive to a performance-enhancing drug.

He was subsequently banned for three years and has also faced court during his suspension where he was found guilty of assaulting his former wife.

The NRL issued a statement to say Jennings would be allowed to sign a train-and-trial deal with the Roosters.

“The NRL continues to liaise with the Roosters regarding the conditional registration of the player to a train and trial contract. The player will be provisionally registered subject to his acceptance of the specific conditions to be imposed on his registration.”

Jennings has played 298 NRL matches for Penrith, the Roosters and Parramatta, represented NSW, Australia and Tonga in a career which kicked off in 2007.

He was a part of the Roosters’ 2013 premiership-winning side during a three-year stint at the club.

The Roosters have boosted their pack with the re-signing of young forward Siua Wong until the end of the 2026 season.

“I’ve loved the Roosters since the day I joined the club as a young teenager,” said Wong, tipped to be a long-term star.

Meanwhile, Wests Tigers winger Charlie Staines has put an end to any uncertainty over his future, inking a fresh two-year deal to stay at the NRL club until the end of 2025.

Off contract at the end of last season, Staines has technically spent the past three weeks as an unsigned free agent with no contract for 2024. The preference was always for the 23-year-old to remain at the club, but the Tigers needed to release players from their squad to accomodate that.

That became possible on Tuesday, when Triston Reilly and Brandon Webster-Mansfield were let go from the Tigers’ top 30.

Cronulla have released veteran playmaker Matt Moylan to Super League club Leigh Leopards.

The 32-year-old playmaker, who played 102 NRL games for the Sharks after 89 with Penrith, lost his No.6 position to Braydon Trindall towards the end of the 2023 season.

Leigh, who won the 2023 Challenge Cup final under head coach Adrian Lam, have confirmed the signing of Moylan who is set to partner Lachlan Lam in the halves.

Gary O’Neil: Wolves boss turns against VAR after revealing ref admitted errors in Fulham defeat

Gary O’Neil says Wolves’ controversial defeat to Fulham on Monday Night football has “finally turned me against VAR”.

The Wolves boss re-watched several incidents from their 3-2 loss at Craven Cottage with the match officials and revealed referee Michael Salisbury admitted to two errors.

O’Neil said the referee conceded VAR should have advised him to overturn his decision to award Wolves their first penalty when Nelson Semedo got his foot to the ball before making contact with Tom Cairney.

Speaking to Sky Sports, O’Neil said: “Nelson plays the ball and doesn’t touch Cairney. I’ve watched it back with the referee and to be fair, he says he thinks they got it wrong and he should have been sent to the monitor.

“It doesn’t help me and it doesn’t help all the fans that have travelled all this way to help their team. It doesn’t help the players, who are feeling frustrated again.”

Willian converted the penalty to make the score 2-1 to Fulham, and he repeated the trick in stoppage time to seal the win when VAR advised Salisbury to overturn his decision not to give a penalty when Joao Gomes made contact with Harry Wilson.

“The one on Wilson, we disagree on a little bit,” said O’Neil. “He thinks there’s enough contact there to give a penalty. I think it’s really soft.”

O’Neil also felt Carlos Vinicius should have been sent off for making contact with Max Kilman’s head when he confronted the Wolves captain, and that Tim Ream should have received a second yellow card when he fouled Hee-Chan Hwang for the visitors’ penalty.

On the decision not to give Ream a second booking, O’Neil said: “We had an interesting debate. He thought the pen was enough.

“[One of my staff said] by the letter of the law Ream should be sent off.”

Highlights from Fulham’s Premier League match against Wolves

O’Neill also revealed the officials admitted Vinicius should have been dismissed, saying: “He said it was a soft headbutt – I said that was crazy. We can headbutt people on a football pitch as long as it’s deemed soft or not hard enough?

“They’ve since come out after that and said by letter of law we got that one wrong – that should be a red card.

How VAR has haunted Wolves this season…

  • August 14 – Wolves were wrongly denied a stoppage-time penalty on the opening weekend of the season in their defeat at Man Utd
  • September 23 – Luton were awarded a controversial penalty as Wolves were denied victory in a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road
  • October 28 – Newcastle were wrongly awarded a penalty in the 2-2 draw at Molineux after Hee-Chan Hwang was deemed to have fouled Fabian Schar in the box
  • November 4 – An independent panel reportedly unanimously agreed Sheffield United should not have been awarded a stoppage-time penalty in their 2-1 home win over Wolves
  • November 27 – Wolves boss O’Neil reveals referee admitted VAR should have advised him to overturn first Fulham penalty in 3-2 defeat at Craven Cottage, and that Carlos Vinicius should have been sent off for headbutting Max Kilman

“Do I need to tell Max to roll around on the floor when someone headbutts him? I don’t want to. Do I want my players to surround the referee for a second booking for Ream?

“You can argue that two of them could go against us but all four go against us. It’s a tough one for the lads, supporters and myself to take.”

Wolves had already had four controversial penalty decisions go against them this season, and O’Neil added: “We’ve been here a lot this season. We didn’t deserve that.”

O’Neil: I wanted VAR but it’s causing problems

O’Neil believes Wolves have already been denied seven points by officiating errors this season, saying: “Bad luck keeps going against us. I’ve had a real, grown-up conversation.

“I’m trying to remain calm. I’m not angry with anybody. I’m not abusing anyone. It’s just a conversation around, ‘come on guys, it’s six or seven points that have gone against us’.

“I’m managing a big football club here – the difference you’re making to my reputation, the club’s progression up the league, people’s livelihoods is huge.

“It can’t be with all the technology, in the best league in the world, it can’t be OK. We should discuss the game really but unfortunately we have to discuss this.”

O’Neil has previously spoken to Howard Webb, the head of referees’ body PGMOL this season, but said: “I won’t be calling anybody. What can I do?

“I’ve got two options. I keep behaving in the way that I should and make my players behave in the way we should. We respect everybody and the decision-making.

“Or we start to go, ‘that’s not working. We’re going to have to make some noise’. They are the two decisions I have.

“I’ve been really honest. I’d rather be a decent human being and answer things honestly but things need to get better.

“I can’t accept us being on the wrong end of decisions as often as we are. That needs to get better.”

O’Neil conceded he may be at the end of his tether with VAR, explaining: “I’ve always been for VAR but I think it’s causing a big problem at the moment.

“Maybe tonight has finally turned me against VAR. I thought it would probably help but it doesn’t seem to be.”

Carra: Ref harsh to give first Fulham penalty

The Monday Night Football panel discuss whether Fulham were right to be awarded both their penalties against Wolves

Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher on Fulham’s first penalty:

“I think it’s extremely harsh. We speak about wanting the on-field referees to make the decision. There’s no doubt Semedo gets something on the ball. He stands on his big toe.

“You can look at lots of different angles. I think it’s harsh. I’m not a massive fan of VAR slowing things down. We’re talking about a toe. After the ref has given the decision, VAR have got a problem because we’re in the territory of ‘clear and obvious’.

“This phrase ‘clear and obvious’ is a grey area. Different people have different opinions – how far does it have to go before it’s a howler?”

Carra: VAR wrong to advise ref to give second Fulham pen

Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher on VAR helping to give Fulham’s second penalty:

“Again, it’s harsh. The referee has got a great position, sees it and shakes his head straight away.

“When you slow it down it looks worse. When you watch at full speed, like the ref did from five or six yards away, it’s harsh.

“I think it’s more of a penalty than the first one – but the problem for me is, after the ref doesn’t give it on field, the decision shouldn’t be overturned. That’s my feeling.

“I don’t think it is a penalty. The ref has a great view. VAR thinks that’s a clear and obvious error. I don’t see it.”
