24 Common Plants and Flowers That Are Poisonous to Pets | Wealth of Geeks

Nature is full of surprises. A mountain’s majestic presence explodes with scorching hot magma; a river’s gentle flow can pull us under at any given moment—and the most enchanting flowers conceal toxic remedies.

We love our pets–sometimes more than our human counterparts–so we do our best to provide them with the best life possible. It’s our job to keep them safe and, sometimes, to keep nature’s cruel intentions at bay.

1. Chrysanthemum

Image Credit: Savina Nataliia / Shutterstock.

Chrysanthemums, or ‘mums’ as we often call them–are those pretty flowers that line your porch every time autumn rolls around. Besides helping us change seasons, they’re a natural line of defense against mosquitoes. Finally–we can sit out back and enjoy our decks thanks to the oil from some chrysanthemum species.

The same elements that repel those little bloodsuckers can also cause harm to our canine and feline companions. Combined with other compounds like sesquiterpene and lactones, a curious dog or cat might end up with symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, wobbly movements, or even skin irritation. We all know how curiosity ends for the cat.

2. Lemongrass

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is a versatile botanical powerhouse that gives off a refreshing citrus aroma. While typically known for its mosquito-repelling abilities, lemongrass is also cherished in the perfume industry for its lemony smell. Nutritionists might even recommend adding it to your diet for its antioxidant properties. In countries like Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, lemongrass goes by the name “fever grass” and is brewed into a tea believed to fend off fevers and cold symptoms.

However, if you’re a pet parent, keeping lemongrass in your home cautiously is best. The plant’s essential oils and cyanogenic glycosides tend to upset our furry friends’ stomachs. So, while you might enjoy lemongrass for its many benefits, keeping it out of the tasting range of your pups and kitties is wise.

3. Amaryllis

Amarylis Flower

The Amaryllis is rooted in Greek legend and embodies determination and strength while adding a naturally beautiful touch to most living spaces. And it’s quite a low-maintenance flower, which is great news for all of us lacking a green thumb–you don’t even have to water it, thanks to its naturally waxed bulb.

But the flower’s alluring nature can turn sour quickly for our pets. Amaryllis contains substances like lycorine. They’re poisonous to pets and can lead to vomiting, lethargy, and even tremors. So, if you’re juggling your love of plants and natural decor with pet care, we suggest keeping the Amaryllis out of reach. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

4. Fern Palm

Anything that connects me to the dinosaurs is cool in our book, and the Fern Palm brings the Jurassic Era into our homes. Nowadays, folks consider it a symbol of endurance that spans millennia. Asia particularly reveres it as one of the four holy plants, and you can typically find it gracing their temple gardens.

The Fern Palm is quite dangerous for the dogs and cats in our lives. It houses toxins like Cycasin and B-methylamino-L-alanine. Ingesting even small amounts can lead to severe symptoms such as vomiting (which may include blood), dark stools, and jaundice. In severe cases, your pet might experience liver failure or even death. Just one or two seeds can put the whole awful scenario into motion. Yes–it’s a fun and historical plant, but keep it well beyond your pet’s reach.

5. Geranium

geranium

Geraniums are a familiar sight on balconies and have found a special place in the hearts of the Swiss, who’ve embraced the geranium as a symbol of their national identity. The scented geranium is also a culinary artist’s dream. We can feast both our human eyes and stomachs on these edible treats. They elevate ordinary dishes into extraordinary experiences with their unique essential oils.

However, it’s a bit of a different tale for our pets. Despite some culinary and aesthetic virtues for humans, geraniums contain essential oils that can upset our pets’ stomachs, with cats being particularly sensitive to their effects. Larger exposures might even lead to more severe symptoms like ataxia, muscle weakness, depression, or hypothermia.

6. Daffodil

Daffodil

With their sunny disposition, daffodils have a way of bringing the freshness of spring indoors. But unbeknownst to most, they’re best kept in their own company. These deceptively enchanting flowers secrete a sap that’s not too friendly to other flowers. You can tame them a bit with a 24-hour soak, but bouquets beware.

Still, boisterous bouquets are just the tip of the iceberg. There’s also a cautionary note for all of us pet owners. Daffodils contain lycorine and other alkaloids that can be toxic to dogs, cats, and even horses. Ingesting parts of the flower–especially the bulbs–can lead to symptoms ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to more severe reactions like convulsions and cardiac arrhythmias.

7. Lavender

Purity, devotion, serenity, and calmness. These are just a few feelings deeply ingrained in how lavender touches our lives. We rely on it to fend off sleepless nights, and its romantic nature makes it a sought-after guest in wedding bouquets. Yes–the vision of lavender fills our minds with endless purple fields. But lavender’s color palette encompasses white, pink, and even yellow.

But just when we thought lavender could do no wrong, here comes a warning for us pet parents. Compounds like linalool and linalyl acetate, while soothing to us, can upset our furry friends. It can lead to nausea and vomiting in dogs and cats.

8. Chives

Chives

Growing chives in your home is a smart move for your wallet and a great way to boost your green thumb confidence. They’re simple to cultivate and offer fresh harvests time and again. From a nutritional standpoint, chives pack a punch well above their weight class. A mere tablespoon brings protein, calcium, and a lineup of vitamins like A, C, and K–all great news for humans.

It’s not all good news for those of us with pets running amuck in our homes. Chives contain N-propyl disulfide, a substance that’s no friend to dogs or cats. If they ingest chives, you may start to see symptoms develop like vomiting, hemolytic anemia, and blood in their urine. Overall weakness and an increased heart rate are among other noticeable symptoms. So, while we savor the many benefits of chives in our kitchen, keeping them out of paw’s reach is crucial.

9. Iron Cross Begonia

Iron Cross Begonia

The Iron Cross Begonia brings a touch of the exotic to your indoor garden. Its distinctive “iron cross” foliage thrives in the shade rather than direct sunlight. It’s why it makes such a great houseplant. But beyond ornamental appeal, the Iron Cross Begonia’s therapeutic capabilities might surprise you. For us humans, its natural enzymes can aid the digestive process, and its anti-inflammatory properties relieve pain or swelling.

However, its therapeutic nature doesn’t extend to dogs or cats. All begonia species, including the Iron Cross, contain soluble calcium oxalates. This is toxic for our pets. Symptoms like vomiting and excessive salivation are particularly pronounced if your dog or cat feasts on the plant’s roots.

10. Iris

Iris
Image Credit: Beautiful landscape / Shutterstock.

The Greek goddess Iris traversed the heavens and earth, leaving a trail of colorful flowers in her wake. Thus, the iris we know and love today blooms in spectacular colors. Beyond its visual appeal, the iris offers a fragrant contribution to the world of scents. Orris Root, derived from the iris, is a cherished ingredient in perfumery. You’ll find its delicate aroma anywhere from perfumes and potpourri to gin. Yes, you read that correctly–the unique iris scent adds a subtle layer of complexity to certain gin brands.

The toxic nature of the iris knocks this beautifully smelling flower down a few pegs for us pet owners. Containing pentacyclic terpenoids, irises can pose a risk to dogs and cats. The highest concentration of these toxic compounds is found in the rhizomes. If ingested, it can lead to symptoms like salivation, vomiting, drooling, lethargy, and diarrhea.

11. Peony

Peony

The peony bears a name birthed from ancient lore. Legend says that Paeon used the peony to heal a wound on Zeus. That story alone graced the flower with a legacy of healing and protection. In a more modern sense, peonies carry some hefty health benefits. Studies show signs of immune support and anti-inflammatory properties, supporting their historical use in Chinese medicine. But let’s not forget the romantic angle. These beauties signify love; perhaps only the red rose carries more weight.

However, the beauty and symbolism of peonies come with a caveat for all of us pet parents. The presence of phenol in peonies can cause adverse reactions in dogs and cats, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and depression.

12. Carnation

Carnation

Carnations, known as the “Flowers of the Gods,” hold a celestial place in the floral world. This heavenly association isn’t just in the name; carnations carry deep symbolism, particularly in Christian traditions, where they are believed to have first grown from the Virgin Mary’s tears. Beyond their mythological significance, varying carnation colors convey unique messages: white for purity, red for deep love, and pink for gratitude–to name a few.

We must note that carnations are not entirely benign regarding our pets despite their divine beauty and rich symbolism. If ingested, carnations can cause mild gastrointestinal upset and dermatitis. Let’s admire their beauty while keeping a mindful distance for the safety of dogs and cats.

13. Florida Beauty

Florida Beauty plant

The Florida Beauty can infuse any space with a hint of tropical appeal. Its leaves feature spots that evolve from bright yellow to a serene creamy white as the plant ages. Belonging to the easy-going Dracaena family, the Florida Beauty is a godsend for less-than-capable gardeners seeking an easy houseplant to spruce things up. There’s nothing better than a low-fuss green companion to make your living space more lively.

As pet owners, it’s important to know that the Florida Beauty’s has a less inviting side. Saponins compounds that, while contributing to the plant’s resilience, pose risks to dogs and cats if ingested. Symptoms like vomiting (possibly with blood), depression, lack of appetite, excessive drooling, and dilated pupils (in cats) are indicators of its toxic nature.

14. Dumbcane

Dumbcane
Image Credit: Kristina Ismulyani / Shutterstock.

Also running under the aliases tropic snow and exotica perfection, dumbcane is an exquisite evergreen climber from the Araceae family. Its name actually originates from the bizarre result of chewing on its stem–temporary speechlessness. This peculiar effect is due to raphides, needle-like calcium oxalate crystals found within the plant’s cells. When the plant’s tissue is broken, these crystals can cause intense irritation to mucous membranes, leading to swelling and inflammation of the tongue and throat.

Keeping right along with its unconventional nature, we pet owners should also tread carefully. Dumbcane’s insoluble calcium oxalates and a proteolytic enzyme make it a toxic encounter for dogs and cats. Symptoms such as oral irritation, an intense burning sensation in the mouth, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing can occur if ingested. Maybe we all want to reconsider keeping this plant around the house.

15. Chamomile

Chamomile
Image Credit: Shan 16899 / Shutterstock.

Many of us love chamomile for its medicinal properties and ability to soothe us in tranquility whenever life gets a little out of hand. Chamomile tea is the go-to remedy, but there are various ways to infuse its calming vibe into our daily routine. You might also be surprised to learn that chamomile has a unique place in beer brewing. Brewers are constantly innovating, and one such creation is chamomile-infused wheat beers.

Yet despite its gentle reputation, chamomile presents a different story regarding our four-legged friends. Dogs and cats don’t share our affection for this herb due to volatile oils like bisabolol and chamazulene. Ingesting it can lead to symptoms ranging from mild contact dermatitis and gastrointestinal discomfort to more severe allergic reactions. They might even experience bleeding tendencies with long-term exposure.

16. Jade

The jade plant symbolizes prosperity and longevity, exuding an aura of ancient wisdom as it graces our homes and offices. Beyond its aesthetic and symbolic virtues, jade has many benefits, including its ability to purify indoor air. It’s also relatively low-maintenance and requires minimal care to yield maximum impact. Its medicinal properties have been know to help treat wounds and aid digestion.

We should exercise caution regarding the health of our pets when landing on a location for this mystical plant. Its leaves and stems can harm our cats and dogs. Ingestion leads to symptoms like vomiting and lethargy, necessitating a safe placement away from curious paws.

17. Daisy

Daisy

The daisy derives its name from “Daes eage” or “day’s eye” in Old English and marvelously encapsulates the essence of dawn by opening its petals each morning. But beyond their visual charm in gardens and arrangements, daisies offer unexpected versatility–from being an edible garnish rich in vitamin C to boasting medicinal properties that address a range of ailments.

Their allure is slightly marred by their toxicity to pets, attributed to compounds like sesquiterpene and lactones. These can lead to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea in dogs and cats.

18. Christmas Rose

Christmas Rose

The Christmas Rose–a misnomer for the enchanting Helleborus Niger–is a perennial marvel that flourishes in partial shade. Wrapped in myth, the Christmas Rose’s tale is quite heartwarming. Madelon was a young shepherdess who witnessed the Magi bearing gifts for the newborn Jesus. She had nothing to offer, but an angel intervened and provided her with a precious gift to present—the Christmas Rose.

Despite its ethereal beauty and mythological tales, the Christmas Rose is toxic to dogs and cats. Compounds like cardiac glycosides and saponins can induce symptoms ranging from drooling and abdominal pain to severe depression.

19. Fire Lily

The fire lily, or gloriosa lily, truly lives up to its name with petals that mimic the mesmerizing dance of flames. Revered across various cultures, the fire lily symbolizes pride and glory. Its spirited colors and elegant posture embody strength and resilience. It’s also surprisingly low-maintenance, flourishing in well-drained soils and requiring only modest watering once comfortably settled.

The fire lily’s beauty poses a potential danger to our pets. Containing compounds like lycorine poses a toxic threat to dogs and cats. Symptoms range from vomiting and salivation to more severe reactions like convulsions and tremors. This is especially true after ingesting significant amounts of the plant or, more specifically, its bulbs. Therefore, while the Fire Lily might symbolize pride and resilience, it’s essential to cultivate it with care. Keep it at a safe distance from your curious four-legged family members.

20. Parsley

Parsley
Image Credit: Oxana Denezhkina / Shutterstock.

Parsley is often seen as just a garnish, but it has an extensive history tracing back to its Mediterranean roots. Its name comes from the Greek for “rock celery,” reflecting its rugged natural habitat. Parsley is a bit of a culinary chameleon, enhancing dishes and offering natural breath-freshening properties. We wouldn’t recommend brushing your teeth with it, though.

However, despite its culinary and historical accolades, parsley has a less-than-favorable impact on our pets. It contains furanocoumarins, making it toxic to dogs and cats. While considerable amounts are required to induce effects like photosensitization, it’s a reminder that this ubiquitous herb has layers of complexity extending beyond the kitchen.

21. Azalea

Azaleas carry a wealth of symbolism, from womanhood and temperance to fragility and passion. Each color tells its own story: white for healing, yellow for friendship, and red for romance. It’s a flower celebrated across cultures and holds a particularly special place in Japan as an emblem of womanhood. They epitomize elegance and wealth in China, often gracing traditional ink paintings with their beauty.

The beauty of azaleas masks their toxicity to pets, including dogs and cats. They contain grayanotoxin, which can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to weakness and even cardiac failure.

22. Mistletoe

Mistletoe
Image Credit: Oleksandr Rybitskiy / Shutterstock.

Mistletoe is scientifically known as “Phoradendron,” which intriguingly translates to “tree thief.” Perhaps this is because mistletoe opts to siphon nutrients from its host trees through penetrating roots despite its ability to photosynthesize. But the term “mistletoe” itself has a rather humble origin. It comes from the Anglo-Saxon words “Mistal” (dung) and “tan” (twig). The whole name is inspired by how bird droppings containing mistletoe seeds facilitate its spread. In its most literal form, it means “dung-on-a-twig.”

Mistletoe berries pose a significant toxic risk to us and our pets, but they play a pivotal role in the ecosystem. It’s a crucial food source for various birds and wildlife. Still, while we understand the dangers, our pets likely do not. If your dog or cat ingests mistletoe, it can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, potentially low blood pressure, breathing difficulties, and a decreased heart rate. So let’s keep it up high, steal some kisses, and leave it at that.

23. Poinsettia

Poinsettia

We often associate Poinsettias with the holiday season; their red hues have also earned them nicknames like the lobster flower and the flame-flower. The flower earned its name from Joel Roberts Poinsett—an American physician, diplomat, and botanist born in the 18th century. Poinsettias are quite the spectacle in their natural habitat, capable of reaching up to 12 feet in height.

Despite their widespread popularity, it’s crucial to note that poinsettias have an irritant sap that can be toxic to pets such as dogs and cats. While their toxicity is often exaggerated, the sap can still irritate the mouth and stomach and sometimes lead to vomiting.

24. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus
Image Credit: New Africa / Shutterstock.

Eucalyptus leaves are highly sought after for their refreshing scent and therapeutic essential oils. The enchanting aroma of eucalyptus enhances the ambiance of homes worldwide and brings aesthetic appeal to boot. Fresh eucalyptus branches can maintain their freshness and scent for up to three weeks when you keep them in water. Dried eucalyptus preserves its form and fragrance for a more lasting decoration.

Stay mindful of eucalyptus’ toxicity to pets, including dogs and cats. The essential oils, particularly eucalyptol, can cause adverse reactions such as salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. So, while eucalyptus brings a touch of nature and freshness indoors, placing it safely away from pets is crucial for their well-being.

Every Kevin Smith Movie Ranked Best to Worst | Wealth of Geeks

Kevin Smith is a man of many talents and interests. A proficient writer, a skilled comedian, a self-professed comic book aficionado, and a highly inventive creative mind, Smith has earned a reputation as one of the most original filmmakers today. In a career spanning just over 30 years, he’s managed to amass a loyal following of fans for his brilliant films, paving his own succinct cinematic universe in the process.

Breaking into the industry as a young, unknown director from suburban New Jersey, Smith helped change the industry format for independent films with his breakout sensation, Clerks (now recognized by the Library of Congress for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance).

From such humble beginnings, Smith gained traction as a creative auteur, overseeing plans for his interconnected universe, the View Askewniverse. Besides being a simple one-trick pony alone, Smith has also directed numerous other movies outside his cinematic universe, including horror, romantic comedies, and fantasy films.

From his earliest career success with Clerks to the so-so films of his later career, here’s every one of Kevin Smith’s movies, ranked from best to worst.

Clerks

Over the course of a day, best friends/store clerks Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) experience the headaches that come with their job, including annoying customers, malfunctioning store equipment, and problems stemming from their romantic relationships.

It’s impossible to overstate how important Clerks was for the growth of the indie film movement. A marvel of 1990s low-budget cinema alongside other influential movies Reservoir Dogs, Slacker, and Pi, it proved you didn’t need an extensive budget or valuable connections in the industry to make a film. All you needed was a strong script, an affordable camera, and some trusty friends by your side, and suddenly, you have the potential to make a truly great film.

Chasing Amy

Chasing Amy

Holden (Ben Affleck) and his best friend Banky (Jason Lee) are two comic book artists who meet Amy (Joey Lauren Adams), a colleague in their field, at a comic book convention. Immediately smitten with Amy, Holden’s hopes for a relationship are jeopardized when he learns she is a lesbian.

A romantic comedy by way of Kevin Smith might seem like an odd combination. But with Smith’s superior writing abilities coupled with some superb performances from its cast, Chasing Amy goes from a potentially disastrous-sounding rom-com into something lighter, funnier, and surprisingly more emotional. After his admittedly weaker second film with Mallrats, Chasing Amy cemented his reputation as a filmmaker, showing audiences he was here to stay.

Dogma

Dogma

When two exiled angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) discover a loophole in Catholic dogma that would allow them to enter Heaven, the universe itself is put into jeopardy. Choosing a savior from the masses, God selects an ordinary abortion clinic worker (Linda Fiorentino) to stop the two from completing their plan.

Though firmly embedded in Smith’s cinematic universe, Dogma is single-handedly unlike any other film directed by Smith. Satirizing Catholicism and the Catholic Church, it utilizes a wide web of stories and characters derived from the Bible and Smith’s previous films, featuring notable appearances from the demon Azrael (Jason Lee), the angel Metatron (Alan Rickman), and Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Smith, respectively).

Clerks II

Clerks II

Recently let go from their longtime positions as store clerks, Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) find new jobs at the fast food restaurant Mooby’s, using their newfound employment to examine their lives.

With how universally well-received Clerks was, Smith seemed to be treading on uncertain ground when it came time for a sequel. Fortunately, with a larger budget and assortment of stars at his disposal (like Rosario Dawson, Wanda Sykes, and Ben Affleck), Clerks II ultimately prevailed, boasting just as much humor and comic book-centric dialogue as the original.

Mallrats

Stan Lee, Jason Lee, Mallrats (1995)

Coming to terms with the end of their previous relationships, two best friends (Jason Lee and Jeremy London) spend their time at their local mall, looking to distract themselves from their romantic failures.

After Clerks, Smith embarked on his second entry in the View Askewniverse with Mallrats. Not nearly as revolutionary as Smith’s debut, Mallrats has enough of a lightweight charm to satisfy most viewers, quickly becoming a well-loved cult classic in the years since its release.

Zack and Miri

Zack and Miri

In desperate need of some quick cash, lifelong best friends Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) decide to make an adult film together, discovering long-dormant feelings for each other along the way.

Based on its humor, romantic undertones, and main cast listing, Zack and Miri seems more like a Judd Apatow film than a Kevin Smith movie. A humorously raunchy film nearly on par with the excellence of Chasing Amy, it doesn’t necessarily have the same strong narrative as that aforementioned film. Still, the chemistry between Rogen and Banks makes it well worth watching.

Clerks III

Clerks III, Rosario Dawson

Suffering a heart attack, the now middle-aged Randal (Jeff Anderson) gains a new lease on life, deciding to make a movie with his best friends Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Elias (Trevor Fehrman) about their formative years as clerks.

Smith’s most recent film, Clerks III, might be the final entry in Smith’s Clerks trilogy (although it’s unlikely we’ve seen the last of Anderson’s trash-talking, ornery video store clerk, Randal). Packing a surprising amount of emotion, Clerks III may not match the humor or originality of its two preceding films, but it serves as a fond farewell to the series that made Smith an overnight success in the first place.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Peeved that they’ve been cheated out of a lucrative payday when a movie starring their fictional counterparts is green-lit for production, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) depart for Los Angeles to sabotage the movie’s production.

With how popular Smith’s breakout characters Jay and Silent Bob had proven to be with audiences in the ’90s, it seemed only a matter of time before they received their own feature film. The resulting effort proved to be one of Smith’s most ambitious, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back serving as the director’s most full-fledged exploration of his View Askewniverse, as seen from the appearances from Mallrats’ Brodie, Chasing Amy’s Holden, and Clerks’ Dante and Randal.

Red State

Red State

In the Midwest, a trio of teenagers (Kyle Gallner, Michael Angarano, and Nicholas Braun) are captured and held hostage by members of a fanatical cult. As they prepare to sacrifice the young men in a holy ceremony, the church is besieged by AFT agents, leading to a tense stand-off between the two groups.

There’s a lot going on in Red State, Smith’s follow-up to his critically panned 2010 film Cop Out. Essentially, it is two films in one, so he might’ve been better off splitting the movie into two rather than cramming a teen horror film into a hostage crisis movie. Because of this, the movie tends to feel bloated and overstuffed – though Smith manages to usher some great performances out of Michael Parks, Stephen Root, and John Goodman.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot
Image Credit: Saban Films, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Accidentally signing away their legal rights to their fictional comic book counterparts, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) race to Los Angeles to stop a movie featuring their likeness from being made.

After his disappointing work on Tusk and Yoga Hosers, Smith returned to the View Askewniverse with his 2019 film, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. A tongue-in-cheek remake of his own Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, like Smith’s 2001 film, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot offers fans another fanciful journey into Smith’s cinematic universe, even if it does little else to distinguish itself from Smith’s previous Jay and Silent Bob movie.

Jersey Girl

Jersey Girl

After his wife passes away in childbirth, an influential New York publicist (Ben Affleck) tries to raise his daughter (Raquel Castro) with the help of his father (George Carlin).

Smith’s first film outside the View Askewniverse, Jersey Girl is a surprisingly orthodox romantic comedy bearing little of Smith’s creative signatures. The experiment didn’t exactly pay off, with critics demolishing the film upon its release (not to mention taking a critical beating at the box office).

Tusk

Tusk Johnny Depp

Looking for an interesting subject for an interview, a podcast host (Justin Long) agrees to a conversation with an enigmatic man (Michael Parks) who has a deep-seated obsession with a beloved walrus from his past.

Tusk marks another attempt by Smith to start his own cinematic universe, a Canadian foil to his New Jersey-centric View Askewniverse. Unfortunately, Tusk and its spiritual successor, Yoga Hosers, don’t come anywhere close to matching the worst the View Askewniverse has to offer. It’s low on jokes, short on scares, and – despite an occasional glimmer of promise, is undoubtedly one of Smith’s worst efforts to date.

Yoga Hosers

Yoga Hosers (2016) Movie

Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith) are two best friends living in Winnipeg who spend the majority of their time doing yoga and distracting themselves on their phones. Navigating the awkward waters of high school social cliques, the Colleens soon came face to face with an undead evil menacing their community.

The second entry in Smith’s ongoing True North trilogy, Yoga Hosers is only slightly below the series’ previous entry (Tusk) in terms of quality and its lackadaisical humor. Neither funny nor scary, Smith plays with some interesting ideas in his script – the inclusion of Johnny Depp’s Guy LaPointe from Tusk and the sinister real-life Canadian Nazi Adrien Arcand, first and foremost – but it gets mangled beyond repair in its final delivery.

Cop Out

Cop Out

After the prized baseball card he planned on selling to finance his daughter’s wedding was stolen, a New York police officer (Bruce Willis) and his partner (Tracy Morgan) set out to track the thieves down.

The first and so far only movie Smith didn’t personally work on the script for, Cop Out is perhaps most famous for the notorious backstage animosity between Smith and his leading star, Bruce Willis. While it’s easy to blame the two’s turbulent attitude towards one another behind the scenes for Cop Out’s lack of success, there’s no scenario where a movie as painfully unfunny, cliché, and sluggishly paced as this one would’ve worked out well.

The 27 Most Loved Dogs From TV and Movies | Wealth of Geeks

Dogs have always been man’s best friend, so they’ve naturally made their way onto screens big and small. Movies and TV shows are full of fictional dogs that we love almost as much as our own companions, from heroic canines to silly puppies. Their fluffy tails and floppy ears make us fall in love at the first tail wag, and their stories can be inspiring and comforting.

These pooches may be fictitious, but they’ve left a very real paw print on our hearts.

1. Scooby-Doo

Of course, Scooby-Doo and his Scooby Snacks will always be fan favorites. Scooby is one of the most famous fictional dogs of all time, with his goofy way of speaking and the way he’s traversed generations of television and movies. We’ll give Scrappy an honorable mention, but it’s hard to trust him after his hijinks on Spooky Island.

2. Marley

Marley and Me

Marley is the titular figure from Marley & Me and will always have a special place in our hearts. Viewers watch him grow from the littlest puppy to an old, mellow dog who loves his family more than anything. The movie’s heart-wrenching and painfully realistic ending only pushes him further into our hearts.

3. Dug

up 1
Image Credit: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Many dog owners wonder what their dogs think about it. In Up, Dug’s dialogue gives us all a little insight into what goes through canine minds. He’s a hilarious and lovable character with a naivety that makes us want to scoop him up and love him.

4. Snoopy

It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown (1992)

For many people, Snoopy is the most iconic animated dog. He jumped from the comic strips onto our screens and never looked back. This little black and white beagle has a distinct and sometimes negative personality, with gluttonous behavior and a lazy attitude, but his sass is part of why so many love him.

5. Lassie

Lassie and Timmy get ready for bed.

Lassie is one of the most heroic canines ever and is admired as a courageous dog with incredible intelligence. She’s starred in both movies and TV shows as a faithful pet who goes above and beyond to protect, care for, and be alongside her family. It’s safe to say we’d all be lucky to be companions with such a brilliant animal.

6. Seymour

Jurassic Bark- Futurama
Image Credit: 20th Century Fox Television.

If you’ve never seen the Futurama episode “Jurassic Bark,” be prepared for heartbreak. Seymour is Fry’s dog from the past, and in this episode, we find out that this loving and determined little dog waited the rest of his life for Fry to return after he disappeared into the future. Futurama is typically funny, but Seymour’s storyline will bring you to tears.

7. Old Yeller

Old Yeller Movie (1957)

Again, get ready for some brutal heartbreak if you don’t know the story of Old Yeller. This faithful dog sacrifices himself to save his owners, fighting off a wolf but getting injured in the process. Many of us didn’t know what true tragedy was until we saw this movie as children, and the ending breaks us every time.

8. Mr. Peanutbutter

BoJack Horseman Animated Series

Mr. Peanutbutter is one of the most lovable dogs, with a charming naivety and sparky personality. He’s one of the main characters in BoJack Horseman and has a lightness that makes him adorable and hilarious. Some find him annoying, but many people think he’s the best character in the show.

9. Balto

Balto

While no one seems to talk about this movie, most people saw it as a child and loved the main character. Balto has similar vibes to Lassie, rushing to deliver medicine to sick children and saving the day occasionally. He’s courageous but conflicted because some people fear his wolf ancestry.

10. Blue

Blue's Clues (1995)

Blue’s Clues was a major part of many of our childhoods, and while the cheerful human host was replaced, Blue never went anywhere. Even though the show ended in 2006, many people still think about Blue fondly as the colorful little dog they solved mysteries with.

11. Pluto

Mickey and Pluto hugging

An honorable mention goes to Goofy, but most people think Pluto is the best dog in the Mickey Mouse universe. This amusing scamp is loyal and smart but also incredibly funny when pretending to be a human. As one of the only non-anthropomorphic characters from the Mickey Mouse universe, he acts more like a real dog with his energetic nature.

12. Air Bud

Air Bud
Image Credit: Buena Vista Pictures Distribution.

There are roughly a dozen movies in the Air Bud franchise, showing how much people adore him. This talented pup is not only an impressive basketball player but also a dear companion who helps his owner through tragedies and conflicts. And we love seeing him become a father of the little Buddies!

13. Jake the Dog

Adventure Time - intro

This dog has a bold personality and a strong sense of loyalty. He is Finn the Human’s best friend on Adventure Time, and he is always up for a crazy journey. He doesn’t have the innocence of other beloved fictional dogs, but his realistic human demeanor makes him a unique and hilarious TV dog.

14. Clifford

Clifford the big red dog

Clifford has the sweet demeanor of any lovable dog, but he’s special because he’s roughly the size of a house and has bright firetruck-red fur. This fictional dog has a funky appearance, but his endearing and gentle nature gives him a cozy and loving aura. Clifford the Big Red Dog may be an unorthodox pup, but his big heart makes him endlessly lovable.

15. Milo

Max the Dog playing Milo in the Mask

Milo is Stanley’s dog in The Mask and isn’t as smart or wholesome as other lovable fictional dogs, but his crazy antics and boisterous personality make him a favorite. At one point in the film, he wears the mask and becomes a hulking canine who defends his owner but doesn’t want to return the mask, showcasing his feisty ways.

16. Fang

Hugo the dog playing Fang, Hagrid's dog

Fang is Hagrid’s massive dog in the Harry Potter series. He doesn’t show up too much in the films, but the few times he does appear, he’s lamblike and slobbery. His cowardly nature only makes him more endearing, as you would expect him to be brave and strong!

17. Max

Max the dog
Image Credit: Cat in the Hat Productions and MGM Animation/Visual Arts.

Max is the Grinch’s dog in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and he’s one of the best-animated dogs because of his exhausted attitude. He’s a devoted companion to the Grinch but also wants his master to be kinder and only seems happy when the Grinch is doing good. And few things are as precious as Max tipping over when wearing the heavy antler headband.

18. Brian Griffin

Brian and Lois Griffin

Brian Griffin does not have the cute and loyal traits of many people’s favorite pups, but we love him because of his snark and intelligence. While he enjoys martinis and logical arguments, he slips into instinctual dog behavior every once in a while, like growling at the mailman or chasing after a ball.

19. Hooch

Turner and Hooch

Tom Hanks is one of the most respected and admired actors of our time, but Hooch steals the spotlight in the movie Turner & Hooch. Hooch is a devoted companion and is all tail-wags most of the time, but he also steps up to serve justice when he needs to.

20. Bruiser

Legally Blonde Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Cauffiel, Alanna Ubach

Elle Woods has a tough time making friends at Harvard, but Bruiser is always there for her. He was always by her side and would follow her wherever she went. In Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Elle repays his unwavering loyalty by trying to free his mother from a testing lab.

21. Zero

Nightmare Before Christmas Zero

Do ghost dogs count? They do! Zero is Jack’s ghostly pet in The Nightmare Before Christmas who follows him around. His floppy ears, floating body, and bright red nose make him one of the most unusual fictional dogs, but he’s just as cute and rambunctious as any other movie or TV dog.

22. Charlie

All Dogs Go To Heaven

Charlie is the main character in the strange film All Dogs Go to Heaven. He’s voiced by Burt Reynolds, so it’s hard not to love him! Charlie is a flawed character worthy of redemption, making him one of the more complex animated dogs we can’t help but root for.

23. Toto

The Wizard of Oz Toto

Of course, Toto is Dorothy’s little dog in The Wizard of Oz, and he’s the spark that ignites the plot. The relationship between Dorothy and Toto drives Dorothy to run away, and he shows similar devotion to her when she’s in trouble. While he may be little, he is a mighty pup.

24. Pongo and Perdita

101 Dalmatians
Image Credit: Buena Vista Pictures Distribution.

Choosing one over the other felt wrong, so we’re including both Pongo and Perdita from 101 Dalmatians. These loving parents are fiercely faithful to their owners as well as each other, and even though they’re dogs, they’re also couple goals. Who could forget their beautiful little dog wedding?

25. Lady and Tramp

Lady and The Tramp Animated Movie

I couldn’t choose between these two because they’re a package deal! Lady and Tramp are an even more special couple because they have a Romeo-and-Juliet-type love that defies the expectations surrounding them. Tramp’s frisky nature and Lady’s bewitching sweetness make them a precious pair.

26. Bolt

Bolt John Travolta

Bolt is a favorite fictional dog because he thinks he’s as brave and bright as canines like Lassie, Hooch, and Air Bud until he realizes he’s just an average dog. His determination and eventual humility make him a delightful dog to watch grow and go on adventures.

27. Copper

The Fox and the Hound Corey Feldman, Keith Coogan

The Fox and the Hound is a story of an unlikely but wholesome friendship that will warm your heart. The hound, Copper, is beyond kind and innocent throughout the movie, and when it comes down to it, he chooses his lifelong friend over what he is expected to do, and we’ll always love him for that.

The Best Paul Giamatti Movies and TV Shows, Ranked | Wealth of Geeks

Since his theatrical debut in the late 1980s, Paul Giamatti has climbed to the forefront of the film industry, etching out his own definitive place in the annals of pop culture. Though not a mainstream actor in the same mold as Leonardo DiCaprio or Brad Pitt, Giamatti has earned a reputation for his willingness to take on eccentric characters time and time again.

In particular, Giamatti has proven himself adept at portraying cantankerous individuals with a soft-hearted interior, a common trait seen in most Paul Giamatti movies and TV shows, like Sideways, John Adams, Billions, and The Holdovers.

1. John Adams (2008)

While most viewers could recognize Giamatti when John Adams aired on HBO, the series only solidified Giamatti’s place as a multi-faceted actor of startling dramatic range.

Portraying the second, often overlooked U.S. president, Giamatti brings out all the contrasting elements of his real-life counterpart, from Adams’ deep intelligence and proficient wisdom to his paranoia, narcissism, and infamous fiery temper.

2. Sideways (2004)

sideways 1

Though Giamatti had an active career throughout the 1990s, his breakthrough performance came with 2004’s Sideways. Giamatti’s first collaboration with director Alexander Payne, Giamatti stars in the film as Miles, a frustrated novelist coming to terms with his dwindling career and overarching depression.

Although an often difficult personality when interacting with others, Miles also shows a deep affinity for the finer things in life, pouring his love into the miraculous wonders of vintage Pinot Noir. To date, Sideways remains one of the defining Paul Giamatti movies.

3. The Holdovers (2023)

The Holdovers Movie (2023)

Like Giamatti’s previous characterization of John Adams and Sideways’ Miles, The Holdovers Paul Hunham shares the same inherent flaws and strengths as many of Giamatti’s most well-known characters.

A depressed, disgruntled private school teacher struggling with alcoholism, Giamatti weaves enough redeeming qualities to Hunham’s character for viewers to sympathize with. As a result, the film leaves audiences with a deeper understanding of Hunham’s gruff exterior and authoritarian teaching style, making his gradual transformation much more meaningful to witness.

4. American Splendor (2003)

Paul Giamatti and Hope Davis in American Splendor (2003)

A genre-bending biographical drama, American Splendor offers a complex look at the life and career of underground comic book creator, Harvey Pekar, the author of the popular American Splendor series. In one of Giamatti’s first breakout performances, the actor encapsulates a sweeping portrait of Pekar, from his earliest days as a despondent file clerk to his rapid rise in the comic book medium.

With his gravel voice and physical body language, Giamatti makes for a dead ringer when it comes to Pekar, handing in yet another moving biographical performance.

5. Billions (2016-2023)

Billions Paul Giamatti

Next to John Adams, Giamatti’s best television role came with the Showtime series Billions. As New York District Attorney Chuck Rhoades, Giamatti displays the same undying loyalty to law, order, and morality as his earlier presidential counterpart, chasing after billionaires who feel they’re above common societal rules.

Despite his noble intentions, Rhoades still agonizes over the lack of recognition he receives for his work–a recurring character flaw that flares up throughout Billions.

6. Cinderella Man (2005)

Russell Crowe and Paul Giamatti in Cinderella Man (2005).

A film that further cemented Giamatti’s place as an awe-inspiring actor of first-rate abilities, Cinderella Man sees Giamatti portray the real-world boxing manager Joe Gould.

A faithful confidant and inspirational figure in boxer James J. Braddock’s (Russell Crowe) life, Gould’s overarching belief in Braddock’s potential gives the titular Cinderella Man the confidence to step back in the ring. A harrowing sports biopic, it also landed Giamatti an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

7. Barney’s Version (2010)

Anna Hopkins and Paul Giamatti in Barney's Version (2010).

Giamatti’s proficiency as an actor has always involved his ability to portray two conflicting emotions at once. Like most well-known Paul Giamatti movies, Barney’s Version displays this talent to extreme effect, showcasing an alcoholic producer’s (Giamatti) romantic escapades through three turbulent marriages.

Though he meets heartbreak and tragedy around every corner, Giamatti’s Barney never sheds his persistent romantic worldview, even as his personal life spirals out of control.

8. Private Parts (1997)

Howard Stern and Paul Giamatti in Private Parts (1997).
Image Credit: Northern Lights Entertainment; Rysher Entertainment.

An early role for Giamatti, Private Parts finds Giamatti in the supporting role of Kenny “Pig Vomit” Rushton, the on-screen foil to Howard Stern’s rebellious radio personality. T

he personification of traditional entertainment values, Rushton’s conservative approach to radio meshes well with Stern’s brash, crude, often vulgar on-air hijinks, allowing for plenty of comedic and dramatic moments between the two.

9. The Ides of March (2011)

Paul Giamatti and Ryan Gosling in The Ides of March (2011).
Image Credit: Saeed Adyani; CTMG; Sony Pictures Releasing.

An unsung addition to Giamatti’s filmography, The Ides of March focuses on the nightmarish transformation most individuals attached to politics experience at some point in their careers.

A recurring professional rival to Ryan Gosling’s idealistic press secretary, Giamatti’s jaded Paul Zara acts as a fascinating future incarnation of Gosling’s character, showing his younger counterpart what the price of success in politics looks like.

10. Man on the Moon (1999)

Danny DeVito and Paul Giamatti in Man on the Moon (1999).
Image Credit: Youtube.com/Rotten Tomatoes Classic Trailers.

Another early yet integral role for Giamatti, Man on the Moon documents the eventful life of groundbreaking comedian, Andy Kaufman (Jim Carrey).

An ideal creative collaborator to Kaufman, Giamatti’s Bob Zmuda appears willing and ready to commit to any one of Kaufman’s outlandish bits, contributing to each joke with total dedication (especially Kaufman’s infamous alter ego, Tony Clifton).

11. Win Win (2011)

Paul Giamatti and Alex Shaffer in Win Win (2011).

Another overlooked entry in Giamatti’s past body of work, Win Win offers up a heartrending story about the power of escape through sports.

As anxiety-riddled wrestling coach Mike Flaherty, Giamatti pines after a form of stress relief granted to him via coaching his team. Taking a troubled young man (Alex Shaffer) under his wing, Flaherty undergoes a startling metamorphosis, learning to tackle his own issues head-on rather than running and hiding from them.

12. Straight Outta Compton (2015)

Paul Giamatti in Straight Outta Compton (2015).

Yet another ensemble film that Giamatti appeared in, Straight Outta Compton, chronicles the early days of the influential rap group N.W.A. In the film, Giamatti appears in the supporting role of Jerry Heller, the music manager responsible for launching N.W.A. to new heights in the music industry, all the while embezzling from his clients’ lucrative contracts.

A shadowy figure in Straight Outta Compton, Giamatti’s imminent charisma makes him the ideal antagonistic manager–a figure who seems harmless and well-meaning yet harbors his own self-interested motives.

13. The Last Station (2009)

Paul Giamatti and Patrick Kennedy in The Last Station (2009).
Image Warner EgoliTossell / ZepyhrFilms.

A stunning biographical drama film centered around iconic Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer), The Last Station focuses on the intense legal battle for Tolstoy’s copyrighted works. Standing in sharp opposition to Tolstoy’s wife (Helen Mirren), Giamatti’s literary scholar, Chertkov, attempts to distribute Tolstoy’s to the public domain, robbing the writer’s family of their rightful monetary inheritance.

With both sides justified in their respective positions, The Last Station does an amicable job showing the larger complications around Tolstoy’s estate, as well as the public’s access to an author’s work.

14. 12 Years a Slave (2013)

Paul Giamatti in 12 Years a Slave (2013).
Image Credit: Jaap Buitendijk; Plan B Entertainment; Summit Entertainment; Regency Enterprises; River Road Enterprises; Film4 Entertainment.

Though relegated to a mere supporting role, Giamatti uses every second of his limited screen time in 12 Years a Slave to get under viewers’ skin.

Popping up in the film as a diabolical New Orleans trader of enslaved persons, Giamatti’s Theophilus Freeman underscores the disturbing levels of casual racism and bigotry that permeated through the South before the Civil War.

15. Saving Mr. Banks (2013)

Paul Giamatti in Saving Mr. Banks (2013).

If 12 Years a Slave showed Giamatti at his most unsettling, Saving Mr. Banks finds the actor at his most gregarious and sociable. As Ralph, Giamatti acts as the personal Disney-appointed driver to Emma Thompson’s P.L. Travers.

Perfect opposites in both their personality and appearance, Giamatti’s Ralph maintains some inspired chemistry with Thompson, providing Saving Mr. Banks with some of its most cathartic moments.

16. Love & Mercy (2014)

Paul Giamatti in Love & Mercy (2014).
Image Credit: Battle Mountain Films; River Road Entertainment.

Next to 12 Years a Slave’s Theophilus Freeman, Giamatti’s appearance in 2014’s Love & Mercy ranks as one of the actor’s most nefarious roles. In the film, Giamatti appears as the unconventional psychologist Eugene Landy–a mental health professional known for his controversial treatment methods.

Manipulating, abusing, and berating Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson (John Cusack), Giamatti’s terrifying portrayal of Landy proves powerful enough to chill audience members to the bone.

17. White Fang (2018)

Paul Giamatti as Beauty Smith in White Fang (2018). Snapshot taken from the original trailer debut in English.

An animated adaptation of Jack London’s classic novel, White Fang follows an independent-minded wolfdog’s adventures in the Alaskan wilderness.

Forced to participate in barbaric dog fights for his cruel master (Giamatti), White Fang soon earns the love and attention of a more benevolent owner (Nick Offerman), allowing him to overcome his tumultuous upbringing and violent past.

18. The Illusionist (2006)

Paul Giamatti in The Illusionist (2006).
Image Credit: Bob Yari Productions; Contagious Entertainment; Miracle Pictures; Stillking Films.

Another successful outing for Giamatti, The Illusionist also serves as an effective mystery film that draws on several satisfying plot twists.

As Chief Inspector Uhl, Giamatti’s government official investigates the talented Eisenheim (Edward Norton), attempting to unravel the magician’s elaborate tricks to advance his career. Despite their status as adversaries, Uhl accepts Eisenheim’s prodigious talents, acknowledging his opponent’s ability to fool him with admirable disbelief.

19. Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)

Paul Giamatti in Gunpowder Milkshake (2021).
Image Credit: StudioCanal; The Picture Company; Studio Babelsberg; Canal+; Ciné+.

One of Giamatti’s more recent films, Gunpowder Milkshake doesn’t measure up to the best of Giamatti’s earlier films. A boilerplate action thriller, the film follows a reformed assassin (Karen Gillan) attempting to protect a young girl (Chloe Coleman) from her former employer (Giamatti).

The closest thing Gillan’s hitwoman has to a father, Giamatti’s Nathan displays conflicting emotions as the de facto antagonist, torn between his love and affection for Gillan and his pragmatic duties as a criminal mastermind.

20. Planet of the Apes (2001)

Paul Giamatti in Planet of the Apes (2001).
Image Credit: 20th Century Fox; The Zanuck Company.

Though far from a great movie, certain elements of Tim Burton’s 2001 Planet of the Apes remake deserve praise. In addition to the film’s incredible makeup and visual design, the cast does a fantastic job in each of their respective roles, as seen with Giamatti’s portrayal of the orangutan human trader, Limbo.

A bumbling comic relief character interested only in self-preservation, Giamatti’s egocentric portrayal of Limbo owes plenty to the larger-than-life inspiration of W.C. Fields.

The Best Audrey Hepburn Movies To Make Audiences Swoon | Wealth of Geeks

Audrey Hepburn always makes the list when audiences think of the most legendary movie stars of all time. Her beauty, style, grace, and impeccable talent dazzle fans old and new.

Hepburn’s indelible place in history does not fall into simply one category. As the star of stage and screen, she earned acclaim and legions of fans and became a fashion icon, particularly collaborating with famed designer Hubert de Givenchy. In her later years, her work as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF solidified a beauty that’s not skin deep.

That loving, generous spirit showcased through this charitable work only further illuminates what viewers see on screen. In the finest Audrey Hepburn movies ranked here, Hepburn effortlessly portrays a wide range of characters, demonstrating why she remains a Hollywood and worldwide icon.

1. Roman Holiday (1953)

With only a few minor movie credits and a starring role in the stage play Gigi to her name, Audrey Hepburn made her feature film starring debut in Roman Holiday. The film follows Princess Ann (Hepburn), the exhausted Royal, on a goodwill tour of Europe, including Rome, Italy.

Tired of every moment decided for her, she runs away on a whim. When she meets a charming reporter (Gregory Peck), he convinces her to have a day just for herself, with him acting as her tour guide. Of course, his plans to write a story about her change when romance inevitably blossoms.

Gregory Peck insisted Hepburn’s name appear above the title with his, claiming that she’d be a massive star – and boy did he call it! Hepburn lights up the screen as the sheltered but effervescent princess. She and Peck have a warm, natural rapport that gives the film its heart, stemming from the actor’s fast friendship in real life. Fun fact: Hepburn’s reaction to Peck’s joke at “The Mouth of Truth” was completely genuine, and the filmmakers decided to keep it in the film.

Roman Holiday’s heartfelt, bittersweet fairy tale remains one of the finest films ever made. For her lovely performance, Hepburn earned the Academy Award for Best Actress.

2. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

breakfast at tiffanys 1

The most iconic role in Audrey Hepburn’s career would be Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Directed by Blake Edwards, the story follows New York socialite and call girl Holly Golightly (Hepburn). Despite a life filled with parties and an air of sophistication, Holly finds herself lonely, scared, and uncertain with what she calls the “Mean Reds.” She only finds solace when she visits Tiffany’s store. That all changes when the equally lonely and guarded Paul (George Peppard) moves into her apartment building.

Without avoiding the elephant in the room, Breakfast at Tiffany’s features one glaring blemish that prevents it from being a perfect film. Filmmakers cast Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi, who gives a very offensive portrayal of an Asian man. Rooney himself admits his mistake. However, this small role should not deter fans from enjoying the rest of this splendid film.

Hepburn gives one of her most layered performances as Holly, showcasing a lively and elegant demeanor that masks the frightened girl underneath. Her wistful performance of the film’s theme, “Moon River,” demonstrates this genuine softness to her character. According to the book Audrey Hepburn by Nick Yapp, composer Henry Mancini said no one has sung the song “with more feeling or understanding.”

Peppard and Hepburn also have the most romantic and grounded chemistry of all the parings in Audrey Hepburn movies. Their story reminds audiences that true happiness comes from honesty with oneself. With a pretty and jazzy score by Mancini, terrific New York locations, romance abounding, and stunning (now iconic) fashion, Breakfast at Tiffany’s entertains and enriches viewers on all levels.

3. Charade (1963)

charade

Often called the “Best Alfred Hitchcock movie not directed by Hitchcock,” Charade features many classic elements audiences expect from that director’s repertoire: a precise directing style, memorable score, immaculate costumes, and Cary Grant. Not to take anything away from the film’s actual director, Stanley Donen, Charade does have its unique qualities. With Audrey Hepburn’s presence, the movie soars.

The story follows widowed Regina Lampbert (Hepburn), who discovers her husband’s unscrupulous past involves stolen money. Forced to flee from her husband’s partners in crime, she finds an ally in the charismatic and mysterious Peter Joshua (Grant).

With a significant age difference between the two leads (Grant, 59, and Hepburn, 34), Grant only agreed to do the film if Hepburn’s character did the romantic pursuit. Assuaging any trepidation on his part works to the film’s benefit. Seeing Hepburn charm Grant and break down his metaphoric walls gives the movie a refreshing change of pace. The two complement each other beautifully and create an enjoyable, engaging, on-screen dynamic.

Charade works well because it blends suspense, romance, and comedy. The pace never falters, the twists will genuinely surprise, and the performances will delight fans of intelligent and humorous mysteries.

4. Funny Face (1957)

funny face

Hepburn’s first musical came from this upbeat and romantic film that overflows with 1950s panache. Funny Face centers on the employees of the fashion magazine Quality. Searching for a woman to be the face of the company, their photographer, Avery (Fred Astaire), stumbles upon Jo (Hepburn), a clerk in a local bookshop. Inspired by her shy but radiant aura, Avery turns Jo’s life upside down as she becomes a fashion model.

Funny Face’s positive energy, vibrant colors, and lively music enchants viewers. Hepburn proves herself to be a fine singer and capable dancer, able to keep up with veteran Astaire. Though the May-December romance may give some viewers pause, the sweet and tender rapport between them feels believable.

Funny Face also showcases Hepburn’s effortless grace and style, with her character’s journey mirroring her status as a fashion trendsetter. Though it seems ridiculous to say such a beautiful woman has a “funny face,” the film demonstrates that outward beauty reflects the confidence and intelligence from within.

Songs such as “Think Pink” and “S’Wonderful” by George and Ira Gershwin, a fun mix of New York and Paris locations, and stunning costumes by Edith Head and Hubert de Givenchy give the movie its style. Still, the performances and romantic moments make Funny Face the most comforting of all Audrey Hepburn movies.

5. Sabrina (1954)

sabrina audrey hepurn humphrey bogart

If viewers desire another comforting and romantic film with a gentler and more wistful tone, they need look no further than Sabrina. While Roman Holiday put Hepburn on the Hollywood map, Sabrina solidified her place in cinema history. It may sound foolish to accomplish this feat with only two starring roles, but Sabrina showcases Hepburn’s talents tenfold.

Sabrina tells the story of a shy chauffeur’s daughter who’s in love with the youngest son of their wealthy employers. Heartbroken that David (William Holden) never notices her, she goes to Paris to attend culinary school. When the shy and awkward girl returns a confident and sophisticated woman, David and his older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) take notice.

Sabrina’s finest virtue lies with Hepburn’s presence. She exudes unaffected but vulnerable qualities that make her transformation authentic and meaningful. Sabrina needed to find herself before she could ever understand love. Though her chemistry with Holden outshines her dynamic with Bogart to a degree, Sabrina remains a gentle, unapologetically romantic jewel of a film.

6. The Nun’s Story (1959)

the nuns story

A film Hepburn considered her favorite, The Nun’s Story centers on the experiences of Belgian nun Marie Louise Habets before and after WWII. In the film, Gabrielle van der Mal (Hepburn) enters a convent and becomes Sister Luke.

As she learns the ways of her Order and travels to various places, such as a Sanitarium and the African Congo, her kind heart and skills as a nurse prove more than valuable. However, her Order’s stringent requirements constantly test her resolve and faith, awakening doubts within her.

Arguably her finest performance, Hepburn brings the needed gravity to her role in quiet, nuanced ways. She conveys so much with her expressive eyes and delivers lines with the necessary emotion. Though the film runs for two and a half hours, it never feels slow or boring. On the contrary, The Nun’s Story engages audiences with its meaningful tale.

The Nun’s Story also further ignited Hepburn’s giving spirit. Interacting with the people of Africa inspired her work with UNICEF later in life. As Nick Yapp states, “…the suffering she saw in the leper colonies, asylums, and orphanages of the Congo was to claim a stake in her future life.”

The Nun’s Story provides viewers with a beautiful film. For Hepburn, it earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination, but something else even more important – a glimpse into the horrors of the world outside of herself.

7. Wait Until Dark (1967)

wait until dark

Hepburn’s most frightening film, Wait Until Dark, delivers another extraordinary Hepburn performance and a chilling, edge-of-your-seat thriller. The movie revolves around Susy Hendrix (Hepburn), a blind woman and newlywed. After her husband innocently agrees to hold onto a doll for a stranger, he leaves it with his wife. However, neither realize its actual contents: drugs. Soon, with her husband gone, three criminals seeking these narcotics terrorize Susy.

Wait Until Dark bolsters a terrific supporting cast of Alan Arkin and Richard Crenna. It also features what only the best suspense films possess: genuine, nail-biting moments of tension. As Susy finds a way to defend herself despite her lack of sight, viewers will empathize and find themselves holding their breath.

The riveting film earned Hepburn another Best Actress Oscar nomination and deserves to sit alongside the finest suspense films of the era.

8. Always (1989)

always audrey hepburn

A remake of the 1943 film A Guy Named Joe, Always tells the story of deceased pilot Pete Sandich (Richard Dreyfuss), whose spirit subconsciously helps his grief-stricken love Dorinda (Holly Hunter) move on with life. In the film, Hepburn plays Hap, an angel who guides Pete and gives him the advice he needs to think beyond himself so he can move on to Heaven.

In her final film before her death, Hepburn’s role feels more like a cameo. Dreyfuss, Hunter, John Goodman, and Brad Johnson provide the movie’s primary storyline. This heartfelt and touching film demonstrates the power of selflessness and true love. Each actor delivers some of their finest work. Still, though Hepburn only appears for a few minutes, she leaves a lasting impact.

Always will surprise and move many watchers to tears in one of director Steven Spielberg’s most underrated and overlooked movies.

9. My Fair Lady (1964)

My Fair Lady

Another of Hepburn’s seminal films, My Fair Lady, has so much going for it. For its impressive production quality, the film won eight richly deserved Oscars. Indeed, the sets, gorgeous costumes, and glorious song after song will sweep musical lovers away to another time.

The story (based on the stage musical and George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion) follows the flower girl, Eliza Doolittle (Hepburn), and Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison), the stuffy professor determined to make her a proper lady.

Hepburn sparkles in this role, making Eliza’s transformation a joy to witness. However, filmmakers chose to dub her singing with soprano Marni Nixon, whose tone and vocal range exceed Hepburn’s capabilities. The world will never know if audiences would have been critical of Hepburn’s singing, but her acting performance still deserves recognition.

Though the love story between Eliza and Higgins can be challenging to accept, the rest of the film shines so brightly that it makes up for any flaws in the romance.

10. How To Steal a Million (1966)

how to steal a million

An often underappreciated movie in Hepburn’s career, How to Steal a Million, has a superb visual style, intriguing plot, and fabulous fashion. The film centers on Nicole Bonnet, the daughter of an art forger and cat burglar Simon Dermott, who joins forces to steal a painting from a museum and protect her father’s reputation.

How to Steal a Million steals the hearts of moviegoers who enjoy fun and stylish heist films like Ocean’s 11. Though a bit too long, the movie remains engaging, aided by the incredible cast of Hepburn, Peter O’Toole, Eli Wallach, and Charles Boyer. Nicole and Simon make for a more good-natured Bonnie and Clyde, inspiring many viewers to find their own metaphoric partner in crime – and love.

11. Paris When It Sizzles (1964)

paris when it sizzles

Paris When It Sizzles reunites Hepburn with her Sabrina co-star William Holden in one of the silliest, campiest, and most delightful movies of both their careers. The movie centers on screenplay writer Richard Benson, who hires the effervescent, no-nonsense Gaby as his typist.

When Gaby discovers Richard spends all his time drinking instead of writing, the two find a way of working together that breaks his writer’s block. The pair imagine themselves in the story, creating a film within a film and blurring the romantic line between reality and fiction.

Paris When It Sizzles will charm Hepburn and Holden fans and those who love films that blend fantasy and reality. The film features a meta, breaking-the-fourth-wall style, hilarious sight gags, and an elegant production design. The juxtaposition between the sophisticated French design and the slapstick comedy inspires many laughs. Much like a fish-out-of-water scenario, these opposing elements give the film its charming humor.

12. The Children’s Hour (1961)

the childrens hour

Hepburn’s darkest, saddest film, The Children’s Hour, features one of her career’s most resonant and tragic stories. The movie centers on Karen Wright (Hepburn) and Martha Dobie (Shirley MacLaine), two teachers and the heads of the Dobie School for Girls. After a string of bad behavior, punishments, and overhearing arguments, the spiteful student Mary accuses Karen and Martha of having a romantic relationship.

With censors still in place in 1961, no one used the specific terms, but the apparent implications became clear. Without the benefit of particular dialogue, this film’s message must come across through subtlety, subtext, and acting. The story’s immense sadness, aided by the performances, makes The Children’s Hour an affecting look at the consequences of hate, lies, manipulation, and individual ostracism. The lack of empathy reigns supreme, creating a film with a clear message that will remain with viewers.

13. Love in the Afternoon (1957)

Gary Cooper and Audrey Hepburn in Love in the Afternoon (1957)
Image Credit: Allied Artists Pictures Corporation.

Another film featuring a May-December romance, Love in the Afternoon, benefits from Gary Cooper’s stoic and imposing presence, which complements Hepburn’s lively, tenacious spirit. In the film, private detective Claude Chavasse (Maurice Chevalier) discovers the affair between a client’s wife and the notorious lady’s man, Frank Flannegan (Cooper).

With the client intent on killing Frank, Chavasse’s daughter Ariana (Hepburn) rushes to prevent his murder. Of course, what neither anticipated occurs when the two fall for each other.

Though slow-moving at times, Love in the Afternoon has many virtues. The black-and-white film, with its hazy sheen and frequent shadows, adds to the melancholic tone. Romantic but not saccharine, the film also features sophistication and dry humor, unlike any of Hepburn’s other films. Ultimately, the film demonstrates the failings of stubborn pride and the beauty of ageless connections.

14. Green Mansions (1959)

green mansions

Although many critics and film enthusiasts panned Green Mansions, many Hepburn fans have great affection for It. Although miscast by today’s standards, like some other classic films, judging the film at face value and by its core themes illuminates its fine qualities.

The story follows a young Venezuelan man (Anthony Perkins) who flees the revolution after the death of his father. In the jungle he meets Rima (Hepburn), a quiet and enchanting girl, at home with nature. That includes a beautiful fawn that Hepburn later adopted as a pet.

With white-washing and problematic story elements, Green Mansions will appeal to only some. Still, the movie (directed by Hepburn’s husband at the time, Mel Ferrer) has a sense of wonder about the natural world that remains relevant today. A year before his iconic role in Psycho, Perkins doesn’t live up to Hepburn’s other leading men. Still, his gentle demeanor matches the softness in Hepburn’s ethereal Rima.

Consequently, Perkins and Hepburn’s rapport creates a serene atmosphere that matches what Green Mansions ultimately wants its viewers to experience and take away: no force, however strong or violent, can stand between the deepest love.

15. Robin and Marian (1976)

Audrey Hepburn and Sean Connery in Robin and Marian (1976)

Most films about Robin Hood tell sweeping tales of the legendary hero in his prime. Robin and Marian tells a much different story. In the movie, Robin (Sean Connery) and “Little” John (Nicol Williamson) return home to England after years of fighting in the Crusades alongside Richard, the Lion Heart (Richard Harris). Upon Richard’s death, Robin returns to Sherwood and discovers his lost love, Marian (Hepburn), has become a nun.

Robin and Marian features the tried and true elements audiences expect from a movie about these characters: John (Ian Holm) and the Sheriff of Nottingham’s (Robert Shaw) ruthless ways, the plight of the local villagers, Robin’s pride in battle, and he and Marian’s undying love for each other.

What makes this film refreshing stems from the timeless characterizations. Seeing Robin and Marian much older gives viewers a unique perspective. Their carefree, unspoiled days have vanished. Instead, mature minds remain while their hearts burn with youthful, passionate love.

Connery and Hepburn have a believable chemistry, especially when Robin’s longing for battle brings out her greatest fears. This simple, engaging film should go on Hepburn, Connery, and Robin Hood fans’ playlists.

25 Times Movie Sets Turned into Accident Scenes | Wealth of Geeks

On a film set, the line between fiction and reality can blur, but when we’re sitting in the theatre, everything just looks like movie magic.

Even when a scene is carefully choreographed, something can go wrong. From minor mishaps to major calamities, these on-set accidents remind us of the human element in the art of cinema, where not everything goes according to script.

1. Taylor Hickson’s Big Fall

Taylor Hickson, the star of the 2016 film Incident In a Ghostland, experienced her own horror story during filming.

Her director instructed her to pound on a panel of glass for a riveting scene, and when he wanted to up the ante, he told her to hit the glass with more force. His directorial desires created a beautiful image in his head, but the impact broke the glass and caused Hickson to fall through the sheet, severely scarring her face.

Her surgery required 70 stitches and resulted in a permanent facial scar.

2. Dylan O’Brien’s On-Set TBI

Everyone’s favorite cast member of Teen Wolf stepped away from the television series for a venture into theatrical films. On the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Dylan O’Brien was fastened into a harness on top of a car but was suddenly yanked to the ground into the path of a motorcycle.

O’Brien took a year off acting, suffered brain damage, and underwent facial reconstruction surgery to restructure broken bones in his face.

3. David Holmes Became Paralyzed While Filming ‘Harry Potter’

During a battle between Harry and Voldemort, the cable sending Holmes’s body through the air malfunctioned and thrust him straight into a solid structure. The accident paralyzed Holmes from the neck down.

4. Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman pleaded for a stunt double to drive the Karmann Ghia during a scene in Kill Bill Vol. 2, but Quentin Tarantino refused to acknowledge her desires. Not only did the car have transmission issues, but the dirt road Thurman drove down contained more curves than Tarantino believed.

Thurman deals with neck and knee strain to this day.

5. Animals in Milo and Otis

Bruce Lee’s son, Brandon Lee, passed away while filming The Crow in a prop mishap. Lee’s costar, Michael Massee, pointed a prop gun toward Lee, not knowing a bullet fragment remained in the prop gun. Unfortunately, the gunpowder mixed with the fragment led to Lee’s death.

A bright-eyed camera assistant, Sarah Jones, arrived on the set of Midnight Rider with a trembling stomach, nervous about the set’s safety measures, and for good reason. Jones and another woman, Joyce Gilliard, set up their equipment on a live train track when the crew alerted them to abandon the tracks as a train chugged toward them.

The crew had a mere 60 seconds to gather their belongings and jump out of the path, along with clearing their set from the live track. Sixty seconds was not enough. Gilliard lost her arm in the accident, and Jones lost her life.

16. Scott McLean

During one scene, McLean’s character is supposed to stick his head out of a moving vehicle’s window as another car progressed toward the car.

The final words others heard Art Scholl utter were, “I’ve got a problem. I’ve really got a problem.” The airplane aficionado served as a stunt pilot on the set of Top Gun and died in the same way a fictional character did. After the plane enters a flat spin — a phenomenon where the airplane cannot stop rotating — the two men eject themselves from the plane.

18. Roy Kinnear’s Fatal Fall

21. Vic Morrow, Myca Dinh Le, and Renee Shin-Yi Chen

The final day on set should evoke heartwarming moments and sentimentality. The final day of the Twilight Zone: The Movie set stirred up terror for the actors. The scene included Vic Morrow (an adult) and Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen (two children) sprinting away from a helicopter in a reprise of the Vietnam War.

While this idea seemed like an artistic recreation to boost cinematic quality, the pilot of the helicopter could not navigate around the on-set explosions, and he hit all three actors, killing them upon impact.

22. Gabriella Cedillo

Shia LaBeouf in Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)

Gabriella Cedillo worked as an extra on the set of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and had an accident while she was working. What caused her injuries, however, is unclear.

According to Deadline, there was a “freak accident” after she finished her stunt, when Cedillo “was struck by a flying metal object whose welding had come apart.” The metal was supposed to break apart but there was a timing error, leaving Cedillo in its path. She was put into a medical-induced coma after suffering an extensive head injury.

However, ABC reports local news stations at the time were reporting metal sliced through her car after a cable snapped on set. Regardless, the accident left Cedillo with a brain injury.

23. David Ritchie’s Last Fall

Hayden Christensen in Jumper (2008)

The collapse of a set killed David Ritchie on the set of Jumper. The set dresser began disassembling the set when an amalgamation of frozen sand, earth, and ice crushed Ritchie. The production designers and set dressers fastened frozen elements to the walls to replicate a sci-fi environment, but their vision did not translate properly.

The structures fell with little contact, killing Ritchie and injuring another worker.

24. Joe Watts’ Fatal Fall

Vin Diesel’s stunt double for F9: The Fast Saga, Joe Watts, took a 30-foot fall attached to a faulty safety wire. Allegedly, Watts performed the stunt inches away from rehearsal. During filming, he anticipated the scene to go the way

He exited the film with a fractured skull, brain damage, psychological trauma, and the inability to work as a stuntman again.

25. Harry O’ Connor’s Fatal Stunt

Vin Diesel in xXx (2002)

Another one of Vin Diesel’s stunt doubles paid the ultimate price on the set of this action film. According to Newsweek , Harry O’Connor nailed his first paragliding stunt but passed away following the second take.

O’Connor clashed with a pillar on the Pilacky Bridge in Prague, dying on impact. Since O’Connor’s first stunt proved successful, the film crew kept it in the film.

X-Men ’97 Review: A Rollicking Return to Form for Mutant-Kind | Wealth of Geeks

Fans disillusioned over the recent MCU nosedive in quality or just needing a child-of-the-90s fix will not want to miss X-Men ‘97, the new revival of the beloved animated series. Despite carrying over styles, characters and actors from three decades ago, the show, in sum, represents Marvel’s best release in years. Yes, better than anything else in movies, live-action, streaming, or animation.

X-Men ‘97 picks up one year after the original series concluded. The X-Men, led by Cyclops (Ray Chase, replacing the late Norm Spencer) and Storm (Alison Sealy-Smith), continue to mourn the loss of Professor Xavier (Ross Marquand) and police the world against anti-mutant terrorism. Wayward X-Men Morph (JP Karliak) and Bishop (Isaac Robinson-Smith) have joined the team full-time, and a very pregnant Jean Grey (Jennifer Hale) prepares to welcome a son with Cyclops.

A Familiar Threat

A group of terrorists using Sentinel technology lead the team to the young mutant Roberto da Costa / Sunspot (Gui Agustini), and to the possibility that the longtime anti-mutant activist Bolivar Trask has revived the Sentinel program. After a harrowing battle, the X-Men return to the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters and come face-to-face with their longtime nemesis Magneto (Matthew Waterson, replacing the late David Hemblen). Magneto reveals that Xavier has willed him the School and that he has come to take his place as the new leader of the X-Men.

Viewers will first notice that the animation, which maintains the original style and color scheme, looks brighter and clearer than it ever did before. The original X-Men: The Animated Series famously suffered from a low budget and numerous production issues that left the quality of animation wanting, to say the least.

Here, the advent of computer technology has paid off in spades: audiences finally get to see the show as the creators had envisioned it. The animators keep the original show’s trademark jerky movements (another result of the series’ low budget) throughout, though they seem to ease in more fluid animation as the show progresses. Though X-Men ‘97 retains the original character designs, the new show also works in more contemporary camera angles and shot compositions, which evoke Akira and other modern anime.

The same goes for the sound. Though X-Men ‘97 revives the theme song of the original series, a higher budget has swapped out cheap synthesizers for a full orchestral treatment. Everything feels the same but evolved, giving the show an air of familiarity while also pushing it in a more epic direction. The first episode of X-Men ‘97 also functions as a semi-sequel to the original pilot “Night of the Sentinels,” managing to evoke nostalgia without smothering viewers with it. This show wants to continue the legacy of X-Men, but has a story of its own to tell.

Subtle Ribbing

xmen 97 1

That story, above all else, will keep viewers hooked to X-Men ‘97. Contrary to toxic fan speculation, the real elephant in the room here isn’t the diversification of the X-team (adding Morph as a non-binary character, introducing Bishop and other characters of color as members), it’s the legacy of the X-Men movie series. Those films, inspired, in part by the success of X-Men: The Animated Series, have had a lasting effect on all subsequent incarnations of the characters. Here, creator/producer Beau DeMayo, introduces subtle nods to the films—the design of a Pentagon “situation room,” identical to one seen in X-Men: First Class, for example—but doesn’t go out of his way to adapt the show to popular audience conceptions.

DeMayo & company do, however, use X-Men ‘97 as an opportunity to criticize some of the film series’ dumber creative choices. A scene involving Magneto and a helicopter recalls one of the worst moments in Dark Phoenix, though this new animated version plays with more tension and better choreography. A subplot involving a weaponized mutant “cure” evokes one of the most contentious elements of X-Men: The Last Stand. The new series, however, treats the idea in a much more logical way, with characters (Magneto, in particular) behaving true to their established personalities rather than one born out of lame plot contrivance. Viewed together, these moments don’t feel born out of contempt so much as a taste for justice. The creative minds behind X-Men ‘97 have a clear love for these characters and this universe. Making subtle jabs at boneheaded creative choices feels as much like a celebration as a vindication.

Mutants, and Proud

xmen 97 2

That celebratory attitude also carries over to the dialogue as well. The writers love giving their favorite characters delicious monologues: Storm and Magneto both deliver stand-out speeches, full of passion and adult, philosophical thought. That also affords the cast a chance to relish their roles. Sealy-Smith plays Storm to the heavens, imbuing the character with an almost religious fanaticism.

Lenore Zann, reprising her role as Rogue, suggests real vigor and pathos, particularly as the show explores some of the character’s darker feelings. It warrants mentioning as well that most of the returning cast—which also includes George Buza as Beast and Christopher Brittan as Mr. Sinister—sounds just as they did in the mid-90s. Only Cal Dodd, as Wolverine, has noticeable age in his voice. That said, adding a little more gruffness works for a character like Wolverine, and viewers probably wouldn’t substitute Dodd’s beloved gravel for a sound-alike.

Characters do have a habit of vomiting exposition, at least in the first three episodes provided to critics. That does not, however, take away from the explosion of joy on display here, or from the rush most viewers will have visiting this world. Longtime fans of the comics will love the cornucopia of references and characters the new show integrates, while lovers of the original series will find their beloved story executed with more polish and thought.

If the rumors that Marvel Tzar Kevin Feige has retooled the flailing MCU to rely on the introduction of the X-Men characters, X-Men ‘97, though not part of the MCU continuity, represents a giant step toward re-exciting the Marvel audience. If Dark Phoenix ended the Fox X-franchise with a cowering whimper, this inauguration of the X-Men to Disney/Marvel plays like a mighty thunderclap…one possibly conjured by a beloved mutant with a mohawk.

Rating: 8/10 SPECS

X-Men ’97 arrives on Disney+ March 20.
