Hogs’ Sanders, Jefferson force upset of No. 14 Rebels

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — – Quarterback KJ Jefferson returned. So did Arkansas’ offensive firepower. But Rocket Sanders grabbed the spotlight.

Sanders rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns, including a 68-yarder on the opening drive of the second half, in a 42-27 rout of No. 14 Ole Miss on Saturday night.

“He played extremely well,” Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said. “Any running back that carries the ball for 100, 150 yards, they’ve got to have a break, most of the time, they’ve got to have one or two that’ll be a 30-, 40-yard pop. Certainly, that’s what he (got) tonight.”

The Razorbacks had a 35-6 halftime lead, and the Rebels’ 21 fourth-quarter points made the game appear closer than it was.

Sanders averaged 9.7 yards on 24 carries, helping Arkansas (6-5, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) snap a two-game skid and become bowl-eligible. He gained 153 yards in the first half.

Jefferson returned from an injury, going 17 of 22 passing for 168 yards and three scores. Matt Landers added two touchdown receptions for the Hogs.

Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3, No. 14 CFP) moved the ball and had chances early. But holding penalties nullified two touchdown passes from Jaxson Dart. The Rebels lost a fumble, were forced to settle for two field goals on promising drives and missed a field-goal try.

“Very discouraging, obviously,” coach Lane Kiffin said. “I didn’t feel we were flat. We were moving the ball. We just played really poor in the red zone. Two touchdown passes called back, and we didn’t tackle very well. It just shows you the value of turnovers. Give those guys credit. Senior night, they played really hard, ran the ball really well.”

The Rebels had two 200-yard rushers – Quinshon Judkins (214) and Zach Evans (207) – but still trailed by 36 points at one point.

Arkansas linebacker Drew Sanders picked off a Dart pass, setting up Sanders’ 8-yard scoring run just before halftime for the 35-6 cushion.

In the fourth, Judkins scored on a 1-yard run, Evans had a 48-yard TD and Dart passed 13 yards to Malik Heath for a score. Dart went 21 of 36 passing for 240 yards.

THE TAKEAWAY

Ole Miss: The Rebels were outclassed in the wake of a tough 30-24 loss to Alabama, but they can’t let the setback linger since bitter rival Mississippi State looms.

Arkansas: The Razorbacks looked like a different team, especially on offense, after being upset by Liberty and dropping a tight game against LSU.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Ole Miss will almost certainly tumble out of the Top 25.

UP NEXT

Ole Miss: Hosts Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl on Friday.

Arkansas: Visits Missouri on Saturday.

“Didn’t they know that they were going to Australia for T20 World Cup?” – Salman Butt reckons sacked Indian selectors paid price for poor thought process

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has opined that the Chetan Sharma-led Indian selection committee paid the price for picking a poor team for the T20 World Cup 2022, not keeping the conditions in mind. Pointing to the absence of a genuine fast bowler, he stated that the Men in Blue suffered due to a lack of resources at their disposal.

On Friday, November 18, the BCCI sacked the entire selection committee led by Sharma, just days after India’s 10-wicket loss to England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final in Adelaide.

Apart from former pacer Sharma, the selection committee comprised Sunil Joshi (South Zone), Harvinder Singh (Central Zone), and Debashish Mohanty (East Zone). The BCCI has invited applications for new selectors and has set a November 28 deadline for the same.

While some feel the selection committee was made a scapegoat for Team India’s poor performance in the ICC event Down Under, Butt did not agree with the observation. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he stated:

“Yes, at times, in a culture like sub-continent, you have to show that you have sacrificed something. Some people might feel they (selectors) have been made scapegoats. But I don’t feel so. Why were fast bowlers not picked, keeping Australian conditions in mind?

“What was the reason behind not having an out-and-out fast bowler in the team? Didn’t they know that they were going to Australia for the T20 World Cup and were going to play a match in Perth?.”

India lost only one match during the Super 12 stage, going down to South Africa on a pacy surface in Perth. However, they ended up being hammered by 10 wickets in the second semi-final against the Englishmen in Adelaide.

“India did not have any venom in their bowling” – Salman Butt on Men in Blue’s semi-final loss

Reflecting on Team India’s insipid bowling performance in the semi-final contest, Butt again observed that the Men in Blue missed genuine pace. He elaborated:

“When you go to Australia, if you have an out-and-out quick bowler, he will be effective on all the grounds there. India did not have any venom in their bowling that could pose a threat to the opposition in Adelaide. Selectors have to be answerable for that.”

Defending a total of 168, India could not pick up a single wicket in the semi-final against England as the chasing side raced to victory in 16 overs.

80th anniversary of the Beveridge report  – Politics.co.uk

Eighty years on from the publication of his bestseller report, our social security system is far from what William Beveridge first imagined in 1942 when he wanted to slay the five giants of want, disease, ignorance, squalor and idleness. With unemployment benefits at their lowest rate since the early 90s and benefits having been uprated properly in just four out of the last 13 years, our social safety net is being eroded.

With almost 4 million children living in poverty here in the UK, just how far have we come from the original plans for our welfare state when it comes to protecting families from the giant of ‘want’?

Supporting families

Beveridge insisted that for his national insurance scheme to work, there needed to be a national health service, full employment and family allowances, because wages can never take account of family size. Family allowances began as cash payments made to all families with two or more children and paid directly to mothers in order to meet the costs of children and provide a platform on which to build wages. Later child tax allowances were combined with family allowances to create modern child benefit, fully introduced in 1979. However, in more recent times we have seen this support eroded, with child benefit losing a staggering 25 per cent of its value since 2010.

Beveridge argued that it was in society’s interest to support families with children because, as has been shown time and again, growing up in poverty holds children back and can have a knock-on effect on their health, education and life chances. In his Autumn Statement last week, the chancellor talked about education being ‘not just an economic mission, [but] a moral mission’, but today family income is still the biggest predictor of how well children do at school – Beveridge was right to start from here.

 Beveridge in 2022

Unlike Beveridge, our government today fails to understand the additional costs faced by families with children. For families on certain means-tested benefits, harmful policies, such as the two-child limit and the benefit cap, completely sever the link between what families can receive in support and what they need.Nowadays, the unpopular benefit cap affects 130,000 households who have to live on far less money than they are assessed to need. Most (87%) are families with children and 69% are single parents.Fifty-one per cent of single-parent households affected have at least one child aged under 5 years, including 22% with a child under 2.

The social security system has also become increasingly reliant on means-testing, which Beveridge wanted to avoid. Yet the value of his contributory benefits has been eroded over the years, despite strong public sympathy for the contributory principle. Furlough payments during lockdown gave an intriguing glimpse of what a modern contributory system might look like.

The Autumn Statement was an opportunity for the government to provide sustained support to families by investing in our social security system. Uprating benefits in line with inflation is the least the government should be doing. That is hasn’t managed to do this consistently over the past decade means benefits have fallen way behind, and this failure of benefits to meet need has given rise to the modern phenomenon of food banks and other types of charitable relief. According to Bank of England forecasts, prices in 2023/24 will be 17% higher than in 2021/22, but this figure is higher still for low-income families at 21%. The benefits rise of 10.1% next April will still mean families are worse off next year.

The support announced for energy costs for those on means-tested benefits showed the government is still not thinking about children: lump-sum payments do not account for family size. A single person will receive the same amount as a family with three young kids even though families spend 30% more on energy than households without children.

To return to Beveridge’s vision we must get more money to families with children – by getting rid of the cruel two-child limit and benefit cap and by increasing child benefit by at least £20 a week. In Scotland, the full roll-out of the £25 child payment last week will see child poverty rates falling there whilst most likely continuing to rise in the rest of the UK. To reflect our modern world, more investment in things like childcare and free school meals has a crucial role to play as well.

One lesson we should certainly take from Beveridge is ambition. His vision of a social security system where benefit levels meet people’s needs, and of a society that recognises the importance for all children of a childhood free from poverty, is something we all still hope for today. Back when Beveridge first published his report, there was cross-party support for such a comprehensive safety net. We must return to that ambition.

What a super map | Tim Worstall

For the UK, the Ulster bit is the Presbyterian heartland of the Plantation. Liverpool is the Irish and Catholic immigration. The islands are the Wee Frees (??). France is the Vendee – the Catholic and Royalist anti-revolution so harshly put down by the Jacobins. Andalusia was Muslim until 1492, some hangover there. The N Spain bit is, umm, the Carlists of Navarre? V. Catholic. Romania is Transylvania, presumably the Hungarian speakers holding to religion as well as language. Rome is Vatican, well, D’Oh. S Germany is what, Catholic Bavaria? N Albania is the old Venetian Stato Del Mare (spelling?).

Greece is Salonika and no, I don’t know why there.

However, from those other examples at a guess I’d say there’s some different cultural/effnik grouping which clings to religion as one of the differentiators of that grouping. Because that’s much of what’s happening elsewhere. Dunno why the Tatras are more religious than most of Poland but the Czech bit is Moravia and they’ve long had that Catholic/Protestant thing going on.

Anyone got any better ideas?

The areas that are more religious are those which are effnikly different anyway, religion being a marker of that difference? Not as a proof, a 100%, but as a tendency?

Police seen outside Club Q, the site of a mass shooting in Colorado Springs

A mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, US, has left five people dead and 18 injured.

The attack happened at Club Q in Colorado Springs in the early hours of Sunday morning (local time).

Club Q advertises itself as an “adult-oriented gay & lesbian nightclub hosting theme nights such as karaoke, drag shows & DJs”.

Videos shared on social media show a huge police and emergency response, with ambulances lining the streets outside the club.

Local police found one individual believed to be the suspect inside, CNN reported.

“At this point in time, the suspect is being treated, but is in custody,” Colorado Springs police lieutenant Pamela Castro told media.

Police declined to speak about a possible motive. Colorado Springs fire captain Mike Smaldino said 11 ambulances responded to the scene after multiple 911 calls were received.

In a statement on social media, Club Q said it was “devastated by the senseless attack on our community”.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with all the victims and their families and friends.

“We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

The attack happened on Transgender Day of Remembrance, observed annually on November 20.
