Restored version of Shyam Benegal’s Manthan starring Smita Patil to premiere at Cannes Film Festival 2024 : Bollywood News – Bollywood Hungama

Film Heritage Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded by filmmaker and archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur has joined hands with Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. to restore veteran Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal’s national award-winning film Manthan which starred the late iconic film actress, Smita Patil. The 4K restoration of the 1976 film has been selected for the official red-carpet world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024. Noteworthily, Manthan is the only Indian film to be selected under the Cannes Classic section of the festival this year. The film premiere will be attended by Naseeruddin Shah, the family of the late Smita Patil, the producers of the film and Film Heritage Foundation’s Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.

Manthan, a fictionalized version of the beginnings of the extraordinary dairy cooperative movement that transformed India from a milk-deficient nation to the world’s largest milk producer inspired by Dr. Verghese Kurien, the father of the White Revolution, is also India’s first crowd-sourced film produced by 5,00,000 dairy farmers who contributed Rs. 2 each towards the production of the film. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Director, Film Heritage Foundation states, “I am so delighted that Film Heritage Foundation will have a red-carpet world premiere of another one of our restorations of an Indian cult classic at the Cannes Film Festival. The restoration of a Shyam Benegal film has been on the Film Heritage Foundation’s wish list for years as he is one of India’s most venerated filmmakers whose early films were iconic in India’s Parallel Cinema movement. The restoration process has been an incredible experience, especially working so closely with Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani to painstakingly bring the film back to life. Almost half a century later, the power of the narrative and the compelling performances of the actors, especially Smita Patil, remains undiminished. I wish she was here to see the beauty of the restoration.”

Shyam Benegal states, “I was absolutely delighted when Shivendra told me that Film Heritage Foundation was going to restore Manthan in collaboration with the Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. Manthan is a film that is very close to my heart as 500,000 farmers funded it and was instrumental in the growth of an extraordinary cooperative movement that was aimed at breaking the shackles of economic inequality and caste discrimination whilst empowering the farmers. It will remind the world of the power of cinema as a vehicle of change and also the legacy of the great Verghese Kurien, the Father of the White Revolution. Govind Nihalani and I have been following the progress of the restoration closely and I am amazed by the meticulous approach to the restoration. It is wonderful to see the film come back to life almost like we made it yesterday. Film Heritage Foundation has been doing remarkable work in film restoration. Not only are they beautifully restoring films from every region of India, but bringing them back to the public at festivals and screenings around the world in a way that showcases our unique film heritage to contemporary global audiences.”

Naseeruddin Shah states, “I started my career as an actor with ‘Nishant’ followed by ‘Manthan’, both directed by Shyam Benegal. Manthan was a runaway success when it was released almost 50 years ago and it is a film that is remembered even today. I remember that during the shooting of ‘Manthan,’ I lived in the hut, learnt to make cow dung cakes and milk a buffalo. I would carry the buckets and serve the milk to the unit to get the physicality of the character. I am so glad that the Film Heritage Foundation has restored this remarkable film and that this small film made with the support of the farmers has been restored with so much love and care. It is thanks to the persistence, hard work and efforts of the Film Heritage Foundation that the film will be premiered in its second life, as it deserves to be, at the Cannes Film Festival and I am so glad that I will be there to present it myself.”

Govind Nihalani states, “It is remarkable that the Film Heritage Foundation is restoring Manthan nearly fifty years since it was made. Being involved in the restoration has been an emotional experience. It has taken me back to 1976 when the entire unit lived like a family in the village of Sanganva in Gujarat for 45 days during which the film was shot. The shooting was challenging because we had to use a patchwork of different film stock– Eastman and Gevacolor besides Kodak, 35 mm for the film and 16 mm for the film within the film. I began my career as a cinematographer with Shyam Benegal first shooting ad films and then his early feature films. We’ve had an immensely creatively satisfying relationship over the years as Shyam involves you as a partner in the creative process of the film and not just as a cameraman. I am so happy to hear that the restoration of the film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year.”

Presenting at the Cannes Film Festival for the third time in a row, the Film Heritage Foundation has previously premiered Thamp̄ (2022) and Ishanou (2023) at the prestigious film festival.

Film Heritage Foundation used the best-surviving elements for the restoration – the original 35 mm original camera negative and the 35 mm release print preserved at the NFDC – NFAI. Unfortunately, the sound negative was not available. The sound was digitized from the 35 mm release print preserved at the Film Heritage Foundation. The film elements were repaired by the Film Heritage Foundation conservators and the scanning was done in Prasad Lab in Chennai. They found that due to the deterioration of the print, there were vertical green lines on many parts of the film. While the scanning and digital clean-up were done at Prasad under the supervision of L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, the grading, sound restoration and mastering was done at the lab in Bologna. Both Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani, the cinematographer of the film, have been involved in the restoration of the film.

Restored by Film Heritage Foundation at Prasad Corporation Pvt. Ltd.’s Post – Studios, Chennai and L’Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory, in association with Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd., the cinematographer Govind Nihalani and the director Shyam Benegal. Funding supported by Gujarat Co-Operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd.

Released in 1976, Manthan (Hindi for “The Churning”) is a film by director Shyam Benegal that explores the challenges and triumphs of social change in rural India. Set against the backdrop of a village struggling with poverty and exploitation, the film chronicles the arrival of Dr. Rao (Girish Karnad), an idealistic veterinarian, who attempts to establish a milk cooperative movement.

The narrative unfolds in Sanganva, a village rife with social inequalities. The villagers, particularly the Dalit community (considered “untouchables” in the caste system), are forced to sell their milk at meagre prices to Mishraji (Amrish Puri), a local businessman with a monopoly on the dairy trade. The village headman (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), representing the upper caste, upholds the status quo, fearing a loss of power if the established social hierarchy is disrupted. Bhola (Naseeruddin Shah), the leader of the Dalit community, initially views Dr. Rao with suspicion, a sentiment echoed by Bindu (Smita Patil), a strong-willed milkmaid.

Dr. Rao’s vision is one of equitable distribution of profits, free from the exploitation of middlemen. This radical idea disrupts the existing power structures, sparking mistrust, anger, and resistance. The village headman and Mishraji, threatened by the potential loss of control, actively oppose the cooperative movement. Bhola’s initial scepticism gradually gives way to cautious support as Dr. Rao’s commitment to fair treatment becomes evident.

As Dr. Rao gains the trust of the villagers, particularly Bindu, Mishraji resorts to underhanded tactics. He exploits the existing social divisions, manipulating Bindu’s husband to fabricate a false accusation of rape against Dr. Rao. Devastated by the betrayal, Dr. Rao contemplates leaving the village. However, Bhola, inspired by Dr. Rao’s vision, steps forward to continue the cooperative’s development. With the villagers’ support, and Bindu’s eventual vindication, the cooperative flourishes, offering a glimmer of hope for a more just future.

Manthan is a richly layered film that transcends the boundaries of a mere social commentary. The stellar cast delivers powerful performances, bringing depth and complexity to their characters. The cinematography by Govind Nihalani captures the stark beauty of rural India, while the music by Vanraj Bhatia complements the narrative effectively.

Biden’s Numbers, April 2024 Update – FactCheck.org

Este artículo estará disponible en español en El Tiempo Latino.

Summary

As President Joe Biden runs for reelection, here’s how the U.S. has fared during his time in office:

  • The economy added 15.2 million jobs. The number is now nearly 6 million higher than before the pandemic.
  • The unemployment rate dropped back and has stayed lower, longer than at any time during the previous administration.
  • The U.S. economy has expanded each year under Biden and is expected to continue to grow this year, although the first quarter estimate for this year was below expectations.
  • Inflation surged to its highest level in over 40 years. Despite recent moderation, consumer prices are up nearly 19% overall. Gasoline is up 54%.
  • Average weekly earnings haven’t kept pace with prices. After adjusting for inflation, “real” weekly earnings dropped 2.5%.
  • The number of people receiving food stamps has decreased by more than 1 million.
  • The S&P 500 has increased 32.9%.
  • Apprehensions of those trying to cross the southern border illegally are up 297% for the 12 months ending in March.
  • Crude oil production is up 14.2%; imports are up 10.8%.
  • Violent crime has gone down. The latest figures from large cities show an 8.6% drop in murders.
  • The publicly held debt has increased by roughly 27%.
  • The trade deficit for goods and services is about 18.8% higher.
  • For fiscal year 2024, the administration is on pace to admit the most refugees in nearly three decades.

Analysis

In the fall presidential election, Biden will likely face his predecessor, Donald Trump. As we did for Trump, we’ve compiled on a quarterly basis the latest statistics that provide a measure of how things have changed under Biden’s time in office.

This is our ninth quarterly update of “Biden’s Numbers,” which we first published in January 2022. We plan to publish two more updates before Election Day, in July and October.

Jobs and Unemployment

The number of people with jobs rebounded strongly during Biden’s time, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by almost 6 million.

Employment — The U.S. economy added 15,217,000 jobs between Biden’s inauguration and March, the latest month for which data are available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The March figure is 5,824,000 higher than the February 2020 peak of employment before COVID-19 forced massive shutdowns and layoffs.

Some areas are still lagging, however. In March, there were only 23,000 more local government education workers, including teachers, than there were at the pre-pandemic peak, and reports of teacher shortages persist. Employment in the leisure industry still hasn’t recovered; there were 151,000 fewer hotel and restaurant workers and others in the accommodation and food services industries in March than before the pandemic.

Unemployment — The unemployment rate has been lower for longer under Biden than under his predecessor.

It hit the lowest point in over half a century in January 2023 and again in April 2023, when it was 3.4%, the lowest since June 1969.

This March also marked the 28th consecutive month that the rate was at or below 4%. The longest such stretch under Donald Trump was 24 months, just before the pandemic sent the unemployment rate soaring.

The rate was 3.8% last month, down 2.6 percentage points since Biden took office.

Job Openings — The number of unfilled job openings soared, reaching a record of over 12 million in March 2022, but then declined after the Federal Reserve began a steep series of interest rate increases aimed at cooling the economy to bring down price inflation.

The number of unfilled jobs was nearly 8.8 million as of the last business day of February, the most recent month on record. That’s still an increase of nearly 1.6 million openings — almost 22% — compared with January 2021, when Biden took office.

In February, there was an average of nearly 1.4 jobs for every unemployed job seeker. When Biden took office, it was the other way around — fewer openings than unemployed job seekers.

The number of job openings in March is set to be released May 1.

Labor Force Participation — The labor force participation rate (the percentage of the total population over age 16 that is either employed or actively seeking work) has risen slowly during Biden’s time, from 61.3% in January 2021 to 62.7% in March.

That still leaves the rate about half a percentage point short of the pre-pandemic level of 63.3% for February 2020.

The rate has been trending generally down for nearly a quarter of a century. It peaked at 67.3% during the first four months of 2000. Labor Department economists project that the rate will continue to slide down to 60.1% in 2031, “primarily because of an aging population.”

Manufacturing Jobs — During the presidential campaign, Biden promised he had a plan to create a million new manufacturing jobs — but that hasn’t yet been achieved.

As of March, the U.S. added 768,000 manufacturing jobs during Biden’s time, a 6.3% increase in the space of 38 months, according to the BLS.

But compared with the highest level during Trump’s time in office — which was January 2019 — manufacturing jobs are up only 128,000, or 1%.

Wages and Inflation

CPI — Inflation came roaring back under Biden. During his first 38 months in office, the Consumer Price Index rose 18.9%.

For a time it was the worst inflation in decades. The 12 months ending in June 2022 saw a 9.1% increase in the CPI (before seasonal adjustment), which the Bureau of Labor Statistics said was the biggest such increase since the 12 months ending in November 1981.

Inflation has moderated more recently. The CPI rose 3.5% in the 12 months ending in March, the most recent figure available.

Gasoline Prices — The price of gasoline shot up even faster.

During the week ending April 22, the national average price of regular gasoline at the pump was $3.67. That’s $1.29 higher than in the week before Biden took office, an increase of 54%.

The price swung wildly during Biden’s first year and a half, hitting just over $5 per gallon in the week ending June 13, 2022. That’s the highest on record. The rise was propelled by worldwide supply and demand issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

Wages — Wages also have gone up under Biden, but not as fast as prices.

Average weekly earnings for rank-and-file workers went up 16.6% during Biden’s first 38 months in office, according to monthly figures compiled by the BLS. Those production and nonsupervisory workers make up 81% of all employees in the private sector.

But inflation ate up all that gain and more. In March “real” weekly earnings, which are adjusted for inflation and measured in dollars valued at their average level in 1982-84, were still 2.5% below where they were when Biden took office.

That’s despite months of recent improvement. Real earnings in March were 2.1% higher than in June 2022, the low point under Biden.

Economic Growth

Despite concerns about high inflation and the Federal Reserve’s policy of raising interest rates to slow inflation, the U.S. economy has expanded each year under Biden and is expected to continue to grow this year — although the first quarter estimate for this year was below expectations.

The real gross domestic product (which is adjusted for inflation) increased 5.8% in 2021, 1.9% in 2022 and 2.5% last year. In the first quarter of this year, the economy grew at an annual rate of 1.6%, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said in an April 25 release announcing its “advance estimate.” (The advance estimate is the BEA’s first estimate, which could be adjusted May 30 when the second estimate is released.)

The 1.6% first quarter estimate was far below expectations. A day earlier, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s GDPNow model was projecting growth of 2.7%. The BEA said the first-quarter figure reflected a slowdown in spending.

“Compared to the fourth quarter, the deceleration in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected decelerations in consumer spending, exports, and state and local government spending and a downturn in federal government spending,” the BEA said in its release.

Prior to the release of the first-quarter estimate, economists had become increasingly more positive about the U.S. economy in 2024.

In mid-April, Bloomberg News surveyed 71 economists and found that they “now see gross domestic product expanding by 2.4% on average in 2024, up from 2.2% in last month’s survey.”

Similarly, the International Monetary Fund this month upgraded its forecast for U.S. growth this year to 2.7%, up from 2.1% in January. And Vanguard said in its April economic outlook that it expects “real (inflation-adjusted) U.S. economic growth of about 2% in 2024, higher than our initial estimate of about 0.5%.”

Crime

Violent crime has gone down over Biden’s time in office.

Preliminary figures from the FBI show a 5.7% drop in violent crimes and a 13.2% decline in the number of murders from 2022 to 2023, based on data from 79% of law enforcement agencies in the U.S. (download the quarterly tables to see these figures). All other categories of crime also declined, including property crime overall, with the exception of motor vehicle thefts, which increased by 10.7%.

The FBI figures are based on voluntary reports by agencies nationwide. We won’t have the final numbers or information about the nationwide crime rates, which are adjusted for population, until the FBI’s annual crime report is released later this year.

The 2022 annual report showed a slight decline in the nationwide murder and nonnegligent manslaughter rate of 0.5 points from 2020, the year before Biden took office, to 2022. The violent crime rate dropped by 15.4 points, to 369.8 per 100,000 population in 2022.

The property crime rate also decreased during that time period, by 9.5 points. As with the more recent preliminary data, there was an increase in motor vehicle thefts, by 35.2 points. (For these figures, see Table 1 in the CIUS Estimations download for the crime in the U.S. reports.)

The latest figures from the Major Cities Chiefs Association also show a decline in murders and violent crime. The number of murders has gone down by 10.4% from 2022 to 2023 in 69 large U.S. cities. Since 2020, murders in those cities have dropped by 8.6%.

(Note: New York City isn’t included in those percentages, because its 2023 statistics are not in the latest Major Cities Chiefs Association report. However, the number of murders citywide declined by 16.5% from 2020 to 2023, according to data posted by the New York Police Department. The decrease from 2022 to 2023 was 10.7%.)

Despite the decline, the number of murders still isn’t back down to the level in 2019, before a sizable increase occurred. From 2019 to 2020, according to the Major Cities Chiefs Association, there was a 33.4% increase in the number of murders in large cities. In Biden’s first year in office, there was a much smaller uptick of 6.2%. Since 2021, the numbers have been going down.

So far in 2024, murders in more than 200 U.S. cities have declined by 20% overall, compared with the same point last year, according to figures compiled by AH Datalytics, an independent criminal justice data analysis group.

Trade

The U.S. goods and services deficit was $775.9 billion over the last 12 months through February, according to figures published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis earlier this month. The trade deficit in that period was about $123 billion higher, or about 18.8% more, than in 2020.

The international trade gap in the most recent 12-month period is about $3.9 billion less than the calendar year 2023 deficit of $779.8 billion. Last year’s trade deficit was the first annual decrease under Biden — dropping more than 18% from the record gap of nearly $951.2 billion in 2022.

The BEA said the deficit went down in 2023 because of an increase in exports of services, such as travel and transport, and a decrease in the import of goods, such as industrial supplies and materials.

Food Stamps

The number of people receiving food stamps has decreased during Biden’s time by more than 1 million.

As of January, the most recent figures available, there were 41.1 million beneficiaries receiving food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, according to preliminary statistics from the Department of Agriculture published April 12.

That puts SNAP enrollment about 1.1 million below where it was when Biden took office.

In percentage terms, the decline is just over 2.5%.

At the current level, 12.2% of the U.S. population was receiving food aid in January, or just under 1 out of every 8 people.

Health Insurance

The number and percentage of people lacking health insurance has dropped under Biden, and millions more have enrolled in Affordable Care Act marketplace plans.

Since our last report, we have just one more quarter of data on the uninsured from the National Health Interview Survey In the third quarter of 2023, 7.7% of the population was uninsured. That’s a half of a percentage point increase from the second quarter but the same rate as the first quarter.

So far, the quarterly data for 2023 indicate there was a decrease in the uninsured again that year. In 2020, 9.7% of the population or 31.6 million people were uninsured, according to the NHIS. In 2022, 8.4% or 27.6 million people were uninsured. That’s a decrease of 1.3 percentage points or 4 million people under Biden.

The NHIS, a project of the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC, measures the uninsured at the time people were interviewed.

The Census Bureau’s annual reports, which measure those who lacked insurance for the entire year, show the uninsured decreased by 0.7 percentage points or 2.4 million people from 2020 to 2022. We won’t have the 2023 annual report for several more months.

As we have been noting, it’s possible the uninsured figures will start to rise, since some Medicaid provisions that were enacted during the coronavirus pandemic started to be phased out at the end of March 2023.

Under Biden, the premium subsidies for the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace plans have increased — first, through the American Rescue Plan for two years and then through the Inflation Reduction Act. The expanded subsidies are set to expire at the end of 2025. The more generous subsidies allow those earning up to 150% of the federal poverty level to get an insurance plan for $0. (People are eligible for subsidies at 100% of the poverty level, or 138% in states that adopted the Medicaid expansion.) The ACA’s subsidy cap at 400% of the poverty level also has been lifted — those earning more can get subsidies but have to contribute up to 8.5% of their income toward their premiums, as the health policy research organization KFF has explained.

Since 2020, enrollment in the ACA’s marketplace plans has gone up by 10 million people. In the 2024 open enrollment period, 21.4 million people signed up for an insurance plan or were automatically reenrolled.

Stock Markets

As we noted in our last report, the stock markets finished last year strong and started this year strong.

The S&P 500, which is made up of 500 large-cap companies, set new highs in late January, closing on Jan. 24 at a high of 4,868.55. On March 28, the final trading day of the first quarter, the S&P reached a new high at 5,254.35, and recorded its best quarter since 2019.

April has been a cruel month for some investors, but overall all three markets have seen double-digit gains under Biden.

At the close on April 25, the S&P 500 was 5,048.42 — down from its peak in March, but still 32.9% higher than what it was when Biden took office on Jan. 20, 2021.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which includes 30 large corporations, has seen smaller gains than the S&P 500. It has increased 23.1% under Biden — not much different from our last report.

Like the Dow, the technology-heavy NASDAQ composite index, which is made up of more than 3,000 companies, has experienced little change since our last report. Overall, it was up 18.3% under Biden, closing at 15,611.76 on April 25.

Consumer Sentiment

In our January report, consumer confidence in the economy showed some signs of life. But, since then, it has leveled off.

The University of Michigan’s Surveys of Consumers reported that its final Index of Consumer Sentiment for January was 79 — the highest since July 2021. The preliminary survey results for April were little changed at 77.9.

“Since January, sentiment has remained remarkably steady within a very narrow 2.5 index point range, well under the 5 points necessary for a statistically significant difference in readings,” Joanne W. Hsu, director of the Surveys of Consumers, said in a press release on the April preliminary results. “Consumers perceived little change in the state of the economy since the start of the new year.”

Hsu cited a “slight uptick in inflation” and the looming 2024 election as reasons why consumers have tempered their views of the U.S. economy.

Still, the preliminary April figure is 27.9 points higher than the low under Biden, which occurred in June 2022. It is now nearly back to where it was when Biden took office in January 2021, when the index was 79, the historical survey data show.

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Survey also reported little change in March, and warning signs that consumers were becoming “more pessimistic about the future.”

Debt and Deficits

Debt — Since our last quarterly update, the public debt, which excludes money the government owes itself, has increased to about $27.5 trillion, as of April 23. That is more than $5.8 trillion, or roughly 27%, higher than the public debt was when Biden took office.

Deficits — The budget deficit for fiscal year 2024 is a little less than it was at the same point in fiscal 2023, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Through the first six months of this fiscal cycle (October to March), the deficit was $1.1 trillion, or “$37 billion less than the deficit recorded during the same period last fiscal year,” the CBO said in its Monthly Budget Review published this month. The nonpartisan agency said the difference is partially due to higher revenue this fiscal year, but also a shift in when some scheduled payments were made during the previous fiscal year.

For now, the nonpartisan agency projects that the total budget gap for fiscal 2024 will be $1.5 trillion — down from the nearly $1.7 trillion deficit in fiscal 2023.

Corporate Profits

After two record-setting years under Biden, after-tax corporate profits dipped slightly in 2023.

For the year, after-tax corporate profits set records in 2021 and 2022, according to BEA estimates. (See line 45.)

The BEA estimated that profits in 2023 were $2.97 trillion — slightly lower than $2.98 trillion in 2022. Still, it was 36% higher than in 2020, the year before Biden took office.

The preliminary estimate of after-tax corporate profits for the first quarter of 2024 will be released May 30.

Refugees

Biden may fall short again of his ambitious campaign promise to accept up to 125,000 refugees a year into the U.S. But his administration is on course to admit the most refugees in nearly three decades.

On Sept. 29, the Biden administration set the cap on refugee admissions for fiscal year 2024 at 125,000 – just as it did in fiscal years 2023 and 2022.

The administration admitted only 25,465 refugees in FY2022 and 60,014 in FY2023. In the first six months of FY2024, the U.S. has admitted 48,673 refugees, according to State Department data.

At the current pace, the Biden administration appears unlikely to reach 125,000 refugees, but it is likely to register the highest number of refugees since 1995, when the Clinton administration admitted nearly 100,000 refugees, according to data compiled by the Migration Policy Institute.

“Legal immigration is returning to and in some cases surpassing pre-pandemic levels, including refugee admissions on pace to reach the highs of the 1990s,” the Migration Policy Institute said in a January article on Biden’s immigration policies after three years.

In a November report to Congress, the State Department credited the Biden administration’s “intensive efforts to restore, strengthen, and modernize the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program” as the reason for making “significant progress” toward Biden’s goal for refugee admissions.

Overall, the U.S. has admitted 144,160 refugees in Biden’s first full 38 months in office, or nearly 3,800 refugees per month, the department’s data show. That’s 106% higher than the 1,845 monthly average under Trump, who drastically reduced the admission of refugees. The Trump administration admitted only 86,731 refugees in four years. (For both presidents, our monthly averages include only full months in office, excluding the month of January 2017 and January 2021, when administrations overlapped.)

Illegal Immigration

The number of apprehensions of those trying to cross the southern border illegally rose to a historic monthly high of nearly 250,000 in December, before dropping dramatically to an average of about 134,100 per month in the first three months of 2024. Overall, apprehensions have been significantly higher under Biden than his predecessors, according to the latest data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

To even out the seasonal changes in border crossings, we compare the most recent 12 months on record with the year before Biden took office. And for the past 12 months ending in March, the latest figures available, apprehensions totaled 2,019,232, according to Customs and Border Protection. That’s 297% higher than during Trump’s last year in office.

Driving much of the increase has been an explosion in the number of migrants seeking asylum.

According to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University, which collects and analyzes immigration data, the immigration court backlog rose to nearly 3.3 million cases by the end of 2023, more than three times higher than just four years prior. The result, immigration experts said, is that millions of migrants have been released into the U.S. pending court cases that may take years before they come before a judge.

In early February, a bipartisan group of senators unveiled the text of a proposed foreign aid and immigration overhaul bill. The $118 billion bill, called the Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, sought significant changes in border policy. It included money to build more border barriers, to greatly expand detention facilities, and to hire more Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agents, asylum officers and immigration judges to reduce the yearslong backlog in cases to determine asylum eligibility. It sought to expedite the asylum process, essentially ending — in most cases — the so-called “catch and release” policy whereby migrants are released into the U.S. pending asylum hearings. And it would have increased the standard of evidence needed to win asylum status.

Biden threw his support behind the bill, but after Trump publicly opposed it — in part based on a distortion of what the bill would do — the bill failed in the Senate on Feb. 7. It was opposed by all but four Republicans and a few Democrats.

On Feb. 13, the Republican-led House voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, claiming that he had “willfully and systemically refused to comply with Federal immigration law.” The vote was 216-211, with every Democrat and one Republican opposing it. On April 17, the Senate voted along party lines to end the impeachment against Mayorkas.

Judiciary Appointments

Supreme Court — Biden has appointed one Supreme Court justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, who replaced retired Justice Stephen G. Breyer, an appointee of President Bill Clinton. She was confirmed on April 7, 2022. Trump had won confirmation for two Supreme Court justices at the same point of his tenure.

Court of Appeals — Biden has won confirmation for 41 U.S. Court of Appeals judges. At the same point during Trump’s term, 51 had been confirmed.

District Court — Biden has won confirmation for 150 District Court judges, while Trump had won confirmation for 139 at the same point.

Four U.S. Court of Federal Claims judges have also been confirmed under Biden, while five had been confirmed at the same point of Trump’s presidency. Each man had won the confirmation for two U.S. Court of International Trade judges at this stage of their terms.

As of April 25, there were 42 federal court vacancies, with 12 nominees pending.

Gun Sales

The trend of Americans buying fewer guns appeared to continue in the first three months of 2024, according to background check figures reported by a gun industry trade group, the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

The NSSF estimates gun sales by tracking the number of background checks for firearm sales based on the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS. The NSSF-adjusted figures exclude background checks unrelated to sales, such as those required for concealed-carry permits. We rely on these figures because the federal government doesn’t collect data on gun sales.

During the first quarter of 2024, the NSSF-adjusted NICS total for background checks was about 3.98 million — lower than the 4.17 million in the first quarter of 2023, and the lowest first quarter total since 3.41 million during the same period in 2019.

The three-month total so far this year is also about 29.2% lower than the nearly 5.63 million during Trump’s last quarter in 2020, which was a record year for background checks for firearm sales.

The NSSF stipulates that its adjusted NICS data is “not a direct correlation to firearms sales” — but does “provide an additional picture of current market conditions.”

Crude Oil Production and Imports

Last month, the Energy Information Administration reported that average crude oil production in the U.S. increased to roughly 12.92 million barrels per day during Biden’s most recent 12 months in office (ending in January). That was about 14.2% above the average daily amount of crude oil produced in 2020. And it’s higher than the pre-pandemic average in 2019.

EIA has said that oil production, despite declining drilling activity, has reached all-time highs during the Biden administration because new oil wells are more efficient.

“The number of new wells brought on line by drilling activity has historically been the key determinant of whether crude oil production increases or decreases,” the EIA said in a March analysis. “However, advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies have increased well productivity, enabling U.S. producers to extract more crude oil from new wells drilled while maintaining production from legacy wells.”

In its Short-Term Energy Outlook for April, the EIA projected that crude oil production will continue to break records. The agency expects production to reach 13.2 million barrels per day in 2024 and 13.7 million barrels a day in 2025.

Growth in crude oil production led the U.S. to export a record 4.1 million barrels of oil per day in 2023, the EIA said. But the U.S. is still importing more oil than it sends abroad.

In Biden’s last 12 months, the U.S. imported about 6.51 million barrels per day on average. That’s up almost 10.8% from average daily imports in 2020.

Carbon Emissions

After two consecutive years of increases, U.S. energy-related emissions from the consumption of coal, natural gas and various petroleum products fell in 2023 to about 4.81 billion metric tons. That total is about 4.9% more than 2020, but still about 6.6% less than in 2019, before the pandemic.

The EIA said emissions declined last year partially because of a reduction in electricity generated from coal-fired power plants, which was due to the increased use of solar power and other renewable energy sources. The agency said it expects CO2 emissions to remain “mostly unchanged” in 2024 before declining by 1% in 2025.

Home Prices & Homeownership

Home prices — After declining for seven consecutive months, home prices increased in February and again in March.

The preliminary median sales price of existing single-family homes in the U.S. was $397,200 in March — up from $388,000 in February, according to the National Association of Realtors.

“Frankly, it’s a great time to list, with ongoing multiple offers on mid-priced properties and, overall, home prices continuing to rise,” NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said in an April 18 issue of Realtor Magazine.

The preliminary March figure is 29% higher than the $308,000 median home price in January 2021, when Biden took office. But it’s below the peak under Biden of $420,900 in June 2022.

Home prices began to fall last year in part due to rising mortgage rates. In its ongoing attempt to slow inflation, the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate in July for the 11th time since March 2022.

With inflation showing signs of cooling, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell indicated in December that the Fed may start cutting its rate. But recent inflation data have put the brakes on talk of rate cuts.

“The recent data have clearly not given us greater confidence and instead indicate that it’s likely to take longer than expected to achieve that confidence,” Powell said at a forum on April 16.

In our January report, we noted that the 30-year fixed rate mortgage average nationwide, as of Jan. 18, dropped to 6.6% — the lowest since May 2023, according to Freddie Mac. But 30-year mortgage rates, as of April 18, topped 7% for the first time this year, Freddie Mac reported in a recent press release.

Homeownership — Homeownership rates have barely budged under Biden.

The homeownership rate, which the Census Bureau measures as the percentage of “occupied housing units that are owner-occupied,” was 65.7% in the fourth quarter of 2023 — not much different than the 65.8% rate during Trump’s last quarter in office. (Usual word of caution: The bureau warns against making comparisons with the fourth quarter of 2020, because of pandemic-related restrictions on in-person data collection.)

The rate under Trump peaked in the second quarter of 2020 at 67.9%. The highest homeownership rate on record was 69.2% in 2004, when George W. Bush was president.

Marketing strategies for profitable growth in B2B SaaS

With predictions indicating another year of sluggish economic growth, many marketers are grappling with how to deliver improved results with relatively flat budgets.

The economic outlook inevitably influences budget holders’ sentiment towards marketing spend and increases scrutiny on every pound invested. The latest IPA Bellwether report highlights this, projecting a real-term decline in advertising spend,  compounded by inflation and rising costs for ad inventory and labour.

For B2B SaaS brands, this environment is exacerbated by a decline in net new software purchases, with new sales of SaaS down 17% year-over-year. The extension of the buying cycle for B2B SaaS products brings additional challenges, demanding more from marketers in delivering growth from a dwindling pool of customers.

“What’s the ROI on that?”

The question we’re asked more than any other is now becoming increasingly difficult to answer.  This is largely due to the loss of data that’s historically been used to power digital attribution: Third party cookies.

Google’s commitment to phasing out third-party cookies in Chrome by the end of the year marks a significant shift in digital marketing targeting and measurement strategies.

This means marketers are now facing two converging challenges; the need to squeeze as much as possible out of your budget, whilst at the same time adapting to the measurement challenges we face in order to prove what’s working.

Strategies for profitable growth

To navigate these challenges, you need to adopt strategies that enable you to make the most of existing marketing budgets and prioritise bottom-line impact. Here, we’ve selected eight strategies that will help B2B SaaS brands thrive in a challenging market environment.

1. Optimise for Pipeline Impact

Recognising that not all conversions hold equal value is crucial for optimising media spend. Focusing on lower-funnel actions, such as meetings and opportunities, can significantly enhance the ROI of advertising efforts.

This requires a meticulous process involving offline conversion tracking (OCT), single-stage optimisation of bid strategies, and assigning tangible values to key conversion actions.

By prioritising actions that directly contribute to revenue, you can drive more meaningful outcomes from your campaigns.

Optimising for opportunities rather than conversions delivered a huge improvement in efficiency for one of our clients

2. Move to privacy-first measurement

The deprecation of third-party cookies signals a seismic shift in digital marketing, propelling us from precision to predictive measurement. While challenging in the short-term, it will enable us to move towards more resilient, privacy-first marketing measurement frameworks .

To gain more clarity on marketing performance, many brands are increasingly investing in first-party data and exploring alternative measurement frameworks such as media mix modelling (MMM).

Google’s recent launch of Meridian, its own MMM solution, underscores the industry’s pivot towards these methodologies, despite scepticism about the objectivity of advertising networks’ MMM solutions.

In summary, you should be focusing on two areas over the coming months:

  • Triangulate ROI: Employ a combination of MMM, multi-touch attribution (MTA), and experimentation to navigate the post-cookie measurement landscape.
  • First-Party Data Accumulation: Prioritise the collection and management of first-party data to mitigate the impact of third-party sources. This will ensure you are able to match your ‘owned’ data for more reliable ad targeting and measurement.

3. Be less boring!

In the quest for profitable growth, standing out is non-negotiable. Moving beyond conventional feature-based B2B brand positioning to embrace contrarian and emotionally resonant messaging can dramatically increase the effectiveness of your advertising.

Distinctive positioning in action for one of our clients

Creative that breaks the mould not only captures attention but can significantly extend the reach of your budget. As an example, one of our clients outperformed the Linkedin average clickthrough rate by 164% due to the distinctive creative we were able to develop.

4. Adopt Creative Best Practices

One trend we’re seeing is more brands investing in contextual due to limitations in cookie based tracking – with 66% of brands increasing spend on contextual targeting in 2024.

As the landscape shifts towards contextual advertising, the importance of high-quality creative increases as we can no longer rely on personalisation.

However, a recent study by Creative X emphasises the current state of creative quality in digital marketing, indicating that 52% of digital budgets are wasted on poor creative execution.

With a significant portion of digital budgets squandered on subpar creative, adhering to best practices in video length, aspect ratio, branding prominence, and sound optimization is essential.

5. Don’t ignore the passive majority

Research by LinkedIn’s B2B Institute reveals that only 5% of potential buyers are actively searching for solutions at any given time, highlighting the importance of long-term brand advertising targeting the passive majority or potential buyers.

Reaching the “passive majority” (the other 95%) requires a robust brand building strategy that reduces your reliance on existing search demand. Building a brand that resonates with potential customers before they actively seek solutions can ensure your company is top of mind when they are ready to purchase.

Ensuring potential customers know of your brand before they start searching for a solution is essential. A joint study by Google and Bain & Company found that 86% of tech B2B buyers have a list of vendors in mind before starting their research process, underscoring the value of brand awareness.

6. Integrate Search Data

Combining organic and paid search data, strategies and tactics can significantly improve your overall search performance. An integrated approach allows for more strategic allocation of marketing budgets, ensuring visibility where it’s most needed and greater efficiency in customer acquisition costs.

At Hallam, we combine keyword level data across paid and organic search to get a unified view of performance. This enables us to:

  • Analyse where organic rankings are strong and where PPC spend could be reduced
  • Map where organic rankings are weak and therefore paid media is needed to boost visibility on a key search term
  • Bring down target CPA as long as the volume is picked up by organic search.
  • Experiment with budgets to optimise overall search CAC.
  • Share keyword research from paid to organic and vice versa – i.e. top volume drivers, low CPA, low impr. share (high potential for paid), high conv. rate, high competition/ad presence

Blending organic and paid search strategies will enhance the cost-effectiveness of customer acquisition efforts.

7. Invest in Thought Leadership for the AI Era

As generative AI lowers the barrier to content creation, distinguishing your brand through thought leadership becomes increasingly vital. We also know that Google’s Search Generative Experience is poised to reshape how we think about SEO and content, with potential to significantly reduce organic traffic to websites, putting greater emphasis on UGC.

Thought leadership will not only help your brand stand out on search, it’s proven to influence the decision making process. A recent study from Edelman and Linkedin showed the impact of thought leadership on B2B decision makers, with 70% of decision makers more likely to consider a vendor after seeing them produce high-quality thought leadership.

Focusing on creating content that offers unique insights and expert perspectives can help your brand cut through the noise and establish a strong, credible presence in your industry. Furthermore, it will improve your E-E-A-T credentials with Google – a win win!

Our advice to B2B marketers would be to double down on thought leadership as the centrepiece of your content strategy to stand out in the year to come.

8. Make it easy to buy!

Ensuring a frictionless buying journey is essential for converting interest (and website traffic) into sales.

A seamless experience, particularly at critical decision points, can significantly reduce the chances of potential customers abandoning their purchase intent.

We recommend a heuristic review of your website to assess where improvements can be made to boost conversion rate. Of course, an ongoing programme of CRO is the gold standard, but it’s not always feasible depending on traffic volumes.

As a starting point, why not review your own website through the lens of the 6 principles of persuasion to come up with an initial list of improvements.

The Road Ahead

By embracing privacy-first measurement strategies, optimising for down-funnel impact, refining creative approaches, and ensuring a seamless customer journey, you’ll better position yourself for sustainable growth.

The strategies outlined here offer a blueprint for more profitable SaaS marketing over the coming months. Of course, if you’d like any advice or are looking for support on the journey, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

A high carbs-rich diet can raise your blood sugar levels which, in turn, can lead to chances of getting health problems such as type 2 diabetes. Edamame is generally said to be a healthy food that can maintain your blood sugar levels. It’s all because edamame is highly rich in protein and fiber, and low in carbohydrates, making it a nutritious choice. According to research, a high amount of fiber can help keep the levels of blood glucose stable, lowering the possibility of developing type 2 diabetes.

3. Promotes Digestive Health

Eating edamame, an extremely fiber-rich food, helps promote your digestive health. It nourishes your gut with beneficial bacteria and reduces bowel movement issues. The soluble and insoluble fiber present in edamame has a significant role in promoting gut health. Soluble fiber makes the stools soft by absorbing water and making their pass easy, thus preventing constipation. On the other hand, insoluble fiber speeds up the travel of food substances through the stomach and intestine and causes more bulky stools, relieving regular bowel movement.

4. Prevents Depression

Edamame consists of folate, a type of vitamin that the body needs for the formation of DNA and proper cell division. A few studies have shown that low levels of folate are linked with depression which can change the DNA formation. A high amount of folate can contribute to preventing depression symptoms. This vitamin can help by stopping the extreme production of substances known as homocysteine in the body. Too much homocysteine can block the nutrients and blood from reaching the brain and also prevent the release of serotonin, a “feel-good” hormone. Serotonin can help improve mood, appetite, and sleep.

5. Reduce Menopause-Related Problems

Menopause occurs when the menstruation cycle of women ends. This natural process is linked with many related symptoms like mood swings, hot flashes, bone loss, and sweating. The soy isoflavones in the edamame can significantly benefit in relieving these problems. According to research, soy isoflavones may lower the risks of bone loss by lowering bone resorption (breaking down of bone tissue) and promoting bone formation. Moreover, soy isoflavones also reduce other menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, irritability, and depression.

6. Improves Muscle Mass

Edamame is believed to be one of the highest sources of protein among the legumes. This makes it a great addition to your everyday diet, especially if you are a vegan and fitness enthusiast and looking for plant-based protein-rich food. Edamame offers a complete protein that benefits your health by providing all the nine essential amino acids that are highly required by the body to perform well. These amino acids play a key role in muscle repair, muscle growth, weight loss, and strength build-up.

7. Reduces Blood Pressure Levels

Well, foods like edamame are loaded with potassium which can help reduce high blood pressure levels. This mineral comes in an action by relaxing the walls of blood vessels which, in turn, lowers the blood pressure. In a single cup of edamame, you can consume around 67 milligrams of potassium. This helps meet 20% of the recommended daily value of this nutrient in the adult male population and 25% in the adult female population.

What Are The Potential Risks Of Edamame?

For most people, edamame might be a healthy food option but it may not be healthy for some due to the following side effects:

Allergies: Those who are allergic to soy foods need to avoid consuming edamame. It’s because they can cause some allergic reactions such as face swelling, rashes, and hives, and even in some cases, can lead to hypersensitivity.

Stomach-Related Problems: If you eat edamame beans raw or semi-cooked and in excess amounts, you may struggle with some soy-intolerance symptoms such as gas, bloating, and cramps. Also, if you have irritable bowel syndrome, do not consume these soybeans as it may lead to gastric irritation and pain.

Interactions Risks: Though rare, edamame can interact with some medicines., especially hormone-related drugs as it contains phytoestrogen which can impact sex hormones. So, always, consult the doctors before including these beans in your diet when on certain medications.

Nutrient Absorption Hindrance: Edamame also contains some anti-nutrients that may lower the ability of the body to absorb vital nutrients. In addition, they consist of certain compounds which may prevent the absorption of iodine, impacting thyroid function.

Note: If you experience any of these side effects after edamame consumption, seek medical help.

How To Add Edamame To Your Diet?

Edamame beans taste delicious when eaten as a snack. However, you can also enjoy it in different forms of dishes such as salads, noodles, etc. You can try the following ways to include such a nutritious food product in your everyday diet:

  • Mix edamame in your noodle dishes to enrich it with plant-derived protein and fiber.
  • Have it as a snack by sprinkling sea salt or soy sauce over the steamed edamame.
  • Prepare a high protein-rich salad by mixing edamame and organic green veggies.
  • Add it to your favorite recipes of stews and soups.
  • Mix it with cereal dishes such as rice bowls and quinoa salads.
  • Make an edamame hummus and use it as a dip or sauce to enjoy sourdough sandwiches and vegetable wraps.

Summing up

I hope you get the answer to your question ” Is edamame good for you” in this article. To conclude, edamame is a nutritious plant-based food loaded with many health benefits. All thanks to its rich nutritional profile which constitutes a high content of protein, fiber, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and plant chemicals, contributing to overall health. From supporting heart health and digestive health to maintaining blood sugar levels and blood pressure levels, it promotes your well-being. From an easy-to-make snack to a nutrient-dense ingredient in various recipes, edamame is surely an excellent food that can be a part of your wholesome diet. Remember that, it is always right to seek professional guidance before adding it to any of your meals, especially if you have some medical conditions or are allergic to soy products.

What Is Core Sleep? Your Guide To A Better Sleep | Credihealth

Glance At The Topic

  • The most important sleep cycle stage- “Core Sleep” is significantly required for essential bodily functions.
  • About 25% of the core sleep is normal for people with age 18 to 60 years.
  • The contribution of core sleep to human health includes physical healing, immune system strengthening, hormone regulation, and healthy heart health.
  • The factors affecting it may include age, stress, irregular sleep schedule, alcohol, medical conditions, etc.
  • But some preventive measures are helpful such as stress management, proper sleep schedule, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, etc.
  • However, if preventive measures fail, seeking professional help is a must!

Just like a good quality of sleep, quantity also needs to be a high priority! An adequate amount of sleep is necessary for your physical as well as mental health. Each stage of the sleep cycle distinctly impacts your sleep. And “core sleep” has a major role in the improvement of your overall well-being. Curious to know, “What is core sleep”? Well, close sleep emerges as the most critical stage of the sleep cycle that is significantly needed by the body to properly carry out its vital functions. It contributes to several health benefits like physical healing, long-term memory, mood regulation, and hormonal balance. Having a basic idea of core sleep is very crucial for maintaining a healthy sleep pattern. So, this blog will guide you through all the stages of the sleep cycle, what core sleep is, the science associated with it, its health benefits the factors impacting it, and possible tips to improve it. Plus, we will also learn about deep sleep and discuss its comparison with core sleep. Read on!

What Are The Stages Of Sleep?

There are two sleep cycles-REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and Non-REM (Rapid Eye Movement). Your night starts in a non-REM sleep cycle which is followed by a short period of REM sleep cycle. A sleep cycle begins and returns after an interruption every 90 minutes. Let’s take a comprehensive look at all the different stages of sleep!

Non-REM Sleep

Drowsiness (Stage 1): This is the start of the sleep cycle where you begin falling asleep. It generally lasts for a short period of about 1 to 7 minutes and constitutes around 2%-5% of the total sleep cycle. During this stage:

  • Body functions such as eye movements, respiration, and heartbeat start slowing down.
  • Muscles begin to relax with just some twitches.
  • Brain waves calm down gradually.

Light Sleep (Stage 2): In this stage, you move to a more stable sleep state and it’s challenging for you to become awake. It lasts for about 10-25 minutes at the beginning of the cycle and tends to increase with every next cycle. This stage constitutes approximately 45%-55% of the total sleep time. During this stage:

  • All the systems of the body begin to slow down and relax.
  • The temperature of the body falls.
  • Eye movements generally stop.
  • Brain waves slow down (but you have a few, sudden storms of activity)

Deep Sleep (Stages 3 and 4): These stages of sleep are the deepest and most restorative which occur within the first hours of sleep every night. Stage 3 remains for some minutes and counts around 3%-8% of total sleep time. On the other hand, stage 4 lasts for about 20-40 minutes during the initial sleep time and constitutes approximately 10%-15% of total sleep time. At this stage, it is very hard to wake up. During both the stages:

  • As muscles relax, breathing and heartbeat become very slow.
  • Brain waves extremely slow down.
  • It becomes tough to wake up even in an environment with loud noises.

REM Sleep

REM Sleep is stage 5 or you can say the first REM sleep stage that occurs after moving through all the stages of non-REM. It occurs for approximately 90 minutes. According to a study, infants can spend around 50% of their total sleep time in this stage. During this stage:

  • Eyes move quickly from one side to another.
  • Dreaming happens.
  • Heart rate speeds up closely to the wakeful state.
  • The breathing process becomes more rapid and even irregular from time to time.
  • Limbs might become unable to move or act.

What Is Core Sleep?

Well, Core sleep is a crucial and uninterrupted duration of sleep that the body requires to function significantly. It plays a key role in maintaining physical health and cognitive function. Wondering “What is the core sleep stage”? This type of sleep encompasses deep sleep stages of the non-REM sleep cycle that includes stages 3 and 4 and the REM sleep cycle. What percentage of core sleep is normal? The study says adults with ages 18 to 60 years require 7 hours of sleep or above it each night and of this, 25% counts for core sleep.

What Does Science Say About Core Sleep?

When we understand the science behind the significant role of core sleep, it reveals the importance of core sleep in supporting various physiological processes. Well, core sleep helps your brain and body to move through all the different stages of each sleep cycle which are REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep cycles. Want to know, “What happens during core sleep”? Well, during the stage of core sleep, the body undergoes physical healing, memory strengthening, mood regulation, and brain function improvement. Additionally, the brain engages in crucial activities that are critical for mental health, learning, and emotional health. This kind of sleep cycle is specifically important as it significantly enhances the brain’s memory recollection ability and problem-solving skills. Achieving a balanced core sleep ensures a healthy, refreshing sleep routine.

What Are The Benefits Of Core Sleep?

Core sleep greatly contributes to overall health in many ways:

  • Enhances physical healing: Core sleep allows the body to regenerate and repair. During core sleep, tissue repairs, the immune system strengthens, and muscles heal from everyday activities. This, in turn, promotes overall physical health.
  • Improves brain function: Core sleep helps improve brain functions such as learning, decision-making, memory strengthening, and problem-solving. It also enhances mental clarity and creativity.
  • Strengthen the immune system: Core sleep contributes to the production of cytokines which are proteins that can fight off inflammation and infections, thus, protecting the immune system of the body against illnesses.
  • Regulates hormones: Core sleep manages the release of hormones in response to stress, growth, metabolism, and appetite control.
  • Manages mood: Enough amount of core sleep is connected with emotional health. It helps handle mood by holding the brain’s neurotransmitters in balance and prevents stress, anxiety, and irritability.
  • Promotes heart health: Core sleep promotes a healthy heart by preventing stress on the circulatory system and maintaining normal blood pressure.

What Is Deep Sleep?

Also called slow-wave sleep, Deep sleep is stage 3 of the non-REM sleep cycle where your brain waves and body slow down. It is the most refreshing and deepest stage of the sleep cycle which occurs within the initial hours of sleeping. During this stage of the sleep cycle, your body goes through different crucial processes such as energy restoration, immune system strengthening, hormone regulation, and tissue repair and growth.

What Are The Benefits Of Deep Sleep?

Deep sleep contributes to your overall health in several ways that may include:

  • Helps with tissue growth and repair: Deep sleep helps the body repair cells, muscles, and tissues. During this stage, the body releases Human Growth Hormone which eases the rejuvenation and repair of tissues.
  • Boosts immune functions: Deep sleep has a major role in strengthening the body’s immune system. During this stage of the sleep cycle, the body produces cytokines which are the types of proteins, fighting against stress, infections, and inflammation.
  • Strengthens memory: The study says deep sleep is essential for consolidating (strengthening) memories and adding new information to long-term memory. During this stage, cognitive function, problem-solving, and learning abilities improve.
  • Balances hormone: Deep sleep controls the release of different hormones such as insulin (regulates blood sugar levels), cortisol (stress hormone), and leptin (regulates appetite) and prevents them from disrupting your sleep.

Next, let’s compare core sleep and deep sleep as both are the different aspects of the sleep cycle.

What Is Core Sleep vs Deep Sleep?

Though core sleep and deep sleep are correlated to each other, the concepts of both sleep stages are different. If you are wondering, “What is better core or deep sleep”, you should know that both play a great role in achieving optimal health and well-being. Let’s understand what is core sleep vs deep sleep in detail:

  • Scope: Core sleep incorporates deep sleep (stage 4) of the non-REM cycle and REM sleep cycle. On the other hand, deep sleep is a separate sleep stage that comes under the non-REM sleep cycle.
  • Focus: Core sleep mainly focuses on both physical and mental processes such as repair of muscle and tissue, improvement of mood, and strengthening of memory, whereas deep sleep promotes only physical health like promoting the immune system, enhancing tissue growth and repair, and balancing the hormones in the body.
  • Percentage: Typically, core sleep constitutes around 50% of the total sleep time of a healthy adult while deep sleep counts about 20% to 40% of the total sleep time.

What Are The Factors Impacting Core Sleep?

Several factors can contribute to core sleep which may include:

  • Stress: Constant stress can trigger your body to release cortisol, a stress hormone that prevents your brain from calming down and falling asleep.
  • Age: As a person ages, the natural quantity of core sleep reduces. On the other hand, both light stages which are stages 1 and 2 of the non-REM sleep cycle and REM sleep cycle increase.
  • Irregular sleeping schedule: The nature of humans is bound to specific habits and sleep is also included in it. Sleeping and waking up at odd times each day can confuse the biological clock of the body, which, in turn, makes it tough to easily fall asleep.
  • Night Screen time: The blue light radiated from mobile phones or any other electronic devices can stop the production of a hormone called melatonin. Well, melatonin is responsible for the maintenance of the sleep-wake cycle, and a decrease in its amount can lead to difficulty in sleeping.
  • Medical conditions: Some medical issues like sleep disorders or chronic pain can disturb regular sleeping patterns, disallowing you to gain a deep stage of the sleep cycle.
  • Caffeine and alcohol: Caffeine and alcohol both might give you an energy boost and drowsy feeling respectively, but they may impact your core sleep cycle. Instead, have light foods that are easily digestible and help promote good sleep quality.
  • Uncomfortable sleep space: Too noisy, cool, or hot sleep environment can be problematic, disturbing your sleep cycle throughout the night.

What Are The Effective Tips To Improve Core Sleep?

The following are the effective measures you can implement to enhance your core sleep:

  • Follow the proper sleep schedule: Follow the planned sleep schedule. You can do it by sleeping and waking up every day at the exact time. Doing this will balance the body’s natural biological clock.
  • Manage your stress: Consider performing some effective relaxation exercises that may include mild stretching, deep breathing, yoga, and intense meditation. This will benefit in reducing stress, thus, allowing you to sleep better throughout the night.
  • Create a relaxing space for sleep: Make sure your room is full of darkness, quiet, and normally at a cool temperature as it will help calm down your mind. Moreover, use relaxing and high-quality mattresses and pillows to provide the right support to your body.
  • Avoid electronic devices at sleeping time: Do not use mobile phones or any electronic devices or gadgets before you go to sleep, at least for about 1 hour.
  • Limit the use of alcohol and caffeinated beverages: Do not consume alcohol in excess, particularly, in the evening or before you go to sleep. Also, limit the use of caffeinated beverages like coffee, especially in the evening time.
  • Seek help from experts if required: If you have tried all the appropriate sleep routines and are still struggling to fall asleep, seek help from a licensed doctor. They will help find out the potential underlying health problems.

Adrian Lee is a solicitor-advocate in London, specialising in criminal defence, and was twice a Conservative parliamentary candidate.

The recently resolved delay of Joe Biden’s $61 Billion aid package to Ukraine by Congress has drawn attention to the phoenix-like rebirth of an ancient Republican Party (G.O.P.) tradition: isolationism.

Isolationism is defined as a country unilaterally deciding not to engage in the affairs of others. This involves a reluctance to enter into international agreements, military alliances, treaties, or trade deals.

It may come as a surprise to those whose knowledge of American politics post-dates the 1952 Presidential election, but the political party most susceptible to isolationism has usually been the most conservative. Perceived as the foreign policy tough guys of American politics, up until WW2 the Republicans largely eschewed overseas intervention, sometimes to the point of pacifism.

On 8th December 1941, Jeannette Pickering Rankin, a feisty spinster Republican Congresswoman for Montana, became the sole Member of Congress to vote against the U.S. Declaration of War on Japan. Only 24 hours earlier, Japan had sunk most of the American Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbour and then declared war on the U.S.A.

Even when fellow G.O.P. members attempted to persuade her to at least abstain, Rankin stated “As a woman I can’t go to war, and I refuse to send anyone else.” Many years later, Rankin was asked if she regretted her actions in 1941. She replied: “Never. If you are against war, you’re against war regardless of what happens.”

During the War of Independence, it was to the advantage of the Continental Congress to cement an alliance with France, Britain’s greatest rival. Benjamin Franklin successfully negotiated the Franco-American Alliance of 1778, which was later formalised in the Treaty of Alliance. Under its terms, France agreed to supply military equipment and they even sent a naval fleet on two occasions to fight the British at sea.

After 1783, America adopted a very different attitude to the 1778 Treaty. When France and Britain went to war in 1793, America declared neutrality and refused the French the right to equip and re-arm in American ports. Thomas Jefferson once remarked that the motto of the United States should be “Commerce with all nations, alliance with none.”

President James Monroe in 1823, underlined the prevailing American opposition to overseas involvement, arguing that the Old World and the New World should remain distinctly separate spheres of influence:

“In the wars of the European powers, in matters relating to themselves, we have never taken part, nor does it comport with our policy, so to do it. It is only when our rights are invaded, or seriously menaced that we resent injuries, or make preparations for our defence.”

The first retreat from the Monroe Doctrine came in 1898 with the outbreak of the Spanish-American War. A year later, the U.S.A. embarked on a campaign to colonise the Philippines.  However, this did not change the fundamental attitude towards Europe during the Great War.

Whilst American sympathies lay with Britain and France, it seemed that no amount of German provocation could ignite a military response. The sinking of the RMS Lusitania by a German U-boat in 1915, with 128 U.S. deaths, incurred American wrath, but not participation in the war. When 10 American merchant ships were sunk by Germany in early 1917 the reaction was the same.

Only the discovery of the Zimmerman Telegram finally brought America into the war. This was a secret diplomatic communication between the German Foreign Secretary and his Ambassador to Mexico. It instructed the negotiation of an alliance with the Mexicans to enter the war on Germany’s side, on an understanding that the U.S. territories of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico would be ceded to them.

America was horrified and declared war on the Central Powers. Woodrow Wilson later dominated the Versailles peace conference and pushed for the establishment of the League of Nations. However, when he returned home, the Senate rejected full American membership of the League.

By the mid-1930s, the isolationists were determined that America would not be dragged into a future European war. The U.S. Senate set-up a Special Committee on Investigation of the Munitions Industry, known henceforth as the Nye Committee, after the name of Robert Nye, its chairman and a Republican Senator.

The hearings stretched from September 1934 to February 1936 and concentrated on the munitions industry, war profits and the background leading up to U.S. entry into WW1. The Committee denounced the profits made by “the merchants of death” and argued that America had only entered the war in 1917 to aid banks and investors, the sub-text being that ‘Jewish financiers’ were to blame for U.S. intervention.

Nye, the erstwhile “conservative” chairman, supported the subsequent report which called for the nationalisation of the American arms industry. His findings led to Congress passing three Neutrality Acts in 1935, 1936, and 1937.

The first Act prevented the trading of arms with parties in a war, the second forbade loans and credits to belligerents, and the third prohibited U.S. ships from transporting passengers or articles to belligerents. The U.S. had bolted the door on Britain and France and had pushed them towards appeasement.

At the outbreak of war in September 1939, Hiram Johnson, a Republican Senator for California, declared that he would “fight from hell to breakfast” to oppose loosening the restrictions.  Britain’s only hope of U.S. support rested with Democrat President Roosevelt, who argued that the Acts passively aided any aggressor nation. After a tough battle, Roosevelt eventually signed into law a new Neutrality Act of 1939, which allowed arms trading with Britain on a “cash and carry” basis.

On 4th September 1940, during the Battle of Britain, a new cross-party pressure group was established at Yale University: the America First Committee (A.F.C.). The A.F.C. argued that Nazi occupation of Britain would not endanger American national security and giving military aid to Britain risked dragging the U.S.A. into war.

One of the earliest members of the A.F.C. Gerald Ford, the future President, and then a law student at Yale. Another student sent a donation of $100, enclosing a note stating, “What you are doing is vital.” This note and cheque were both signed by a certain John F. Kennedy.

The A.F.C. was generously funded by corporate industry, including Ford Cars, Sears-Roebuck, Inland Steel and the Vick Chemical Company. A national headquarters was opened in Chicago, and membership reached 850,000 in 450 chapters. Celebrities rallied to the A.F.C.’s platforms, including Lillian Gish, a Hollywood actress, Laura Ingalls, the author of Little House on the Prairie author Laura Ingalls (who gave a Nazi salute at an A.F.C. rally) and Frank Lloyd Wright, the architect.

However, A.F.C.’s most prominent spokesman was the Charles Lindbergh, the legendary aviator. Lindbergh addressed A.F.C.’s rallies nationwide. In Des Moines, Iowa on 11th September 1941, Lindburgh made unfavourable mention of the Jewish community:

“Instead of agitating for war the Jewish groups in this country should be opposing it in every way possible, for they will be among the first to feel its consequences. Tolerance is a virtue that depends on peace and strength. History shows that it cannot survive war and devastation.”

Lindbergh concluded thus:

“Their greatest danger to this country lies in their (the Jews) large ownership and influence in our motion pictures, our press, our radio and our government.”

Unsurprisingly, the A.F.C. disbanded shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbour. They signed off with an unapologetic press release stating:

“Our principles were right. Had they been followed; war could have been avoided. No good purpose can now be served by considering what might have been, had our objectives been attained. We are at war.”

After the War, isolationism declined inside the G.O.P., as most joined the crusade against Communism. The corpse of America First briefly re-emerged during Pat Buchanan’s 1988 Presidential campaign, but it took Donald Trump to facilitate a full resurrection.

Of course, the adoption of an America First strategy today would have a different effect on global stability than it would have had 80 years ago, when the U.S.A. was yet to walk upon the world stage. Today isolationism would signal the collapse of the United States as a super-power. Nature abhors a vacuum.

Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist on the steamy love triangle of ‘Challengers’

How sexy can a qualifying tennis tournament in New Rochelle, New York, be? When the on-court drama involves Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, the answer turns out to be quite a bit more than your average USTA singles match in Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers.”

The film, directed by Guadagnino from a script by playwright Justin Kuritzkes, may have the appearance of a sports movie. Much of the action happens in between baselines. There are break points and short shorts. But in Guadagnino’s film, what’s being volleyed isn’t just a fuzzy little yellow ball.

“The ball is the ephemeral, invisible force of desire,” says Guadagnino, the director of “Call Me By Your Name” and “Bones and All.” “I wanted to show desire going back and forth.”

The result, by a score of about six-love, is the love triangle of the year. “Challengers,” which Amazon MGM Studios releases in theaters Friday, takes the melodrama of the threesome and gives it a breathless, bi-curious spin. That’s especially due to the multilateral chemistry between Zendaya, O’Connor and Faist — all actors in their late 20s or early 30s, all very capable of smoldering when called upon.

It’s a big-screen statement especially for Zendaya, who’s also a producer on the film. She plays Tashi, the wife and coach of tennis superstar Art (Faist, the “West Side Story” breakout). Tashi was only relegated to the sidelines because of a career-ending knee injury — though it did little to sap her ambition. When Art, whose passion for tennis is fading, is matched in New Rochelle against an old friend, Patrick (O’Connor, star of Alice Rohrwacher’s recent “La Chimera” ), their complicated past is, deliciously, resurrected.

Zendaya gravitated to the project not because it seemed a natural fit for her, but because it wasn’t.

“Because it sounded like a challenge. Because it is so different from me,” Zendaya said in an interview alongside her co-stars. “Sometimes when you’re a little afraid to tackle something like that you, you’re like, ‘Oo, maybe I should do it.’ I don’t want to walk into something and be like, ‘I got this. This is going to be easy.’”

“Challengers” was originally set to open last fall’s Venice Film Festival before it was postponed due to the actors strike. But the delay has only given more time for the buzz around the film to grow. That has a lot to do with the attention on everything Zendaya does, but it also has to do with how the film puts three exciting young actors in the center of the frame, and doesn’t let go.

“What’s special is that the three of us got to lead the movie. That is cool,” says O’Connor. “An opportunity to do something like that is so rare.”

“Sometimes I’ve been a part of big ensembles,” adds Zendaya, who co-starred in the recent “Dune: Part Two.” “But it’s just the three of us. We are the cast. While we obviously have other amazing actors that contribute, this is the core thing here. Tennis training and the rehearsal period, it was just us. So thank god that we like each other.”

Guadagnino, known for his organic way of working, compares the weeks he and the three stars spent together preparing in Boston to “kids on the beach creating castles of sand.” Though Faist has some ability, the rest were hopeless at tennis. Guadagnino hadn’t picked up a racquet in his life before stepping onto the set in “Challengers.” Famed tennis coach Brad Gilbert was brought in to help.

But “Challengers” isn’t really about tennis, that’s just the arena where attraction and emotion in the film ultimately spills out. When it’s pointed out to Guadagnino that the tennis scenes are essentially his movie’s sex scenes, he responds, “Thank you.”

Faist, O’Connor and Zendaya all connected in different ways not just to how desire ebbs and flows but to how the characters are each juggling their fluctuating passions with their careers.

“It is this constant navigation in what we do. Once a project is over then you’re kind of in limbo. You’re always trying to find that thing that sparks something inside of you,” Faist says. “It was something I really resonated with, that idea of falling in and out of love with your craft.”

For Zendaya, the idea of having your craft ripped away, as it for Tashi, fueled arguably her finest film performance yet. “Challengers” is also the first time she’s leading a theatrical release.

“I’m grateful that I picked a career that I can keep doing for as long as I want to. I can be 80 years old and still be making movies if I get lucky enough to be able to or if that’s something I still want to be do then,” Zendaya says. “I can’t imagine that idea of that life or thing that makes you happy or gives you power being ripped away from you. I deeply empathize with that.”

Producer Amy Pascal first brought “Challengers” to Zendaya, a fittingly full-circle moment considering that Pascal cast Zendaya in her big-screen breakthrough, 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” “Challengers,” though, signals a shift into more mature screen roles for the 27-year-old who from a young age as a Disney TV star had the responsibly of fame and providing for her family on her shoulders.

“Something I deal with personally is the idea of what I should want, or what people want for me,” Zendaya says. “I empathize with that in Tashi but also in Art because he’s playing for two people. He’s not just selfishly playing for his own joy anymore, he’s playing for someone else. Sometimes our work can feel like that, too. We’re playing for the benefit of other people, what people want for us, rather than what really would just make you happy.”

For Zendaya, Faist and O’Connor, “Challengers” allowed them to, when not busy steaming up the screen, wrestle with their own ambitions. O’Connor, who portrayed Prince Charles on “The Crown,” shot “La Chimera” — playing a character he more closely identified with — in between a very different role in “Challengers.”

“He is front-footed, he’s overly confident — all these qualities that I’ve always admired and always wanted that I’ve never quite been able to have. Just to play it and be in his shoes for a few months was bliss,” says O’Connor. “That’s what I’ll hold on to with Patrick. I really like Patrick. I know he’s problematic but I really like him. I find him hilarious and charming and he knows himself. And those are all qualities that I don’t necessarily have but I admire in him.”

The connections and challenges each star brought to “Challengers” added up to a remarkably intimate drama and a potentially career-shifting experience. Even Guadagnino, who generally prefers editing to shooting, found his time on hard court with Zendaya, O’Connor and Faist to be enthralling.

“It was joyous and it was a nice and it was energetic,” says Guadagnino. “It was a good company.”

Biden administration finalizes new rules for power plants in one of its most significant climate actions to-date – Egypt Independent

The Biden administration on Thursday finalized a highly anticipated suite of rules to cut hazardous, planet-warming pollution generated by power plants in one of its most significant environment and climate actions to-date.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s new rules will compel coal and new natural gas power plants to either cut or capture 90% of their climate pollution by 2032. The rules are expected to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions from the sector by 75% compared to its peak in 2005.

The agency also announced tougher rules for the neurotoxin mercury emitted from their smokestacks and will require safer disposal of toxic wastewater and coal ash, which are byproducts of making electricity.

“By finalizing these standards on the same day, we are ensuring that the power sector has the information needed to prepare for the future with confidence,” EPA administrator Michael S. Regan told reporters. “These are the folks who keep the lights on and power our country forward. At the same time, the power sector is also a major contributor to the pollution that drives climate change and threatens public health.”

Along with the rollout of several other major rules in recent months, Thursday’s actions are more signs President Joe Biden is trying to cement his climate legacy ahead of the 2024 election and is vying for the votes of climate-conscious young people in November. His Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, spent his presidency rolling back more than 100 environmental and climate rules, including the power plant rules Biden strengthened Thursday.

The EPA estimated the power plant rules will prevent nearly 1.4 billion metric tons of planet-warming pollution from entering the atmosphere through the year 2047 – equivalent to taking 330 million gas cars off the road for a year.

After a significant court challenge to Obama-era rules prevailed at the Supreme Courtin 2022, the new regulations give power generators options to choose how they meet pollution requirements. And the EPA announced in February it would delay its rule-making process for carbon emissions from existing gas plants, which had initially been covered under the agency’s proposal last year.

A senior administration official said the EPA was “really confident” it had “carefully crafted” the final rules within the confines of the law. But some industry stakeholders said it was just the opposite.

“The path outlined by the EPA today is unlawful, unrealistic and unachievable,” National Rural Electric Cooperative Association CEO Jim Matheson said in a statement, arguing the actions disregard recent Supreme Court rulings.

On Thursday, West Virginia attorney general Patrick Morrisey vowed his office would challenge the final EPA rules in court, claiming they would leave power plants “with no other option but to cease operations.”

“We will be challenging this rule,” Morrisey said in a statement. “The US Supreme Court has placed significant limits on what the EPA can do – we plan on ensuring that those limits are upheld, and we expect that we will once again prevail in court against this out-of-control agency.”

Biden has made combatting the climate crisis a bigger priority than any other president in history, presiding over the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, the nation’s largest-ever climate investment. But while the IRA contained billions in clean energy tax subsidies – a boatload of carrots for power companies to clean up their pollution – the EPA rules serve as a stick.

“Until (companies) have to do it, they don’t do it, because it’s just an added cost,” David Doniger, a senior federal strategist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, told CNN. “In this case, there’s both a requirement and a huge financial incentive.”

EPA’s pollution rules are less restrictive than the Obama-era Clean Power Plan, which was challenged and struck down by the Supreme Court in 2022.

Under the rules, utilities can retrofit existing coal or new gas-fired power plants with equipment to capture and store carbon pollution – the method the EPA recommends as the “best system of emissions reduction,” because it is proven and cost-effective.

But many other options are on the table. For instance, plants could burn less-polluting fuels, including hydrogen in new natural gas plants or natural gas in coal plants. CNN recently reported the EPA scrapped another proposed “best” recommendation that natural gas plants burn climate-friendly hydrogen, after it was questioned even by environmental advocates who worried the technology is still too nascent and could open the rules to more legal peril.

Companies could also choose to retire fossil fuel plants and shift to less expensive and cleaner sources of energy like wind and solar.

“If they choose to retire a plant instead of retrofitting it, that’s their choice,” Doniger said. “There’ll be a lot of charges that EPA is mandating this and mandating that, but this has been designed to follow the Supreme Court’s guidance.”

The EPA also strengthened the final rules from its original proposal, moving up the retirement deadline for existing coal plants that refuse to outfit with carbon capture, and covering more new natural gas plants than it had originally proposed.

Some power generators are unconvinced carbon capture will be the best method to meet the EPA’s requirements. The trade group for utilities, Edison Electric Institute, said in a statement it was concerned about the lack of existing pipes and wells to transport and store the captured carbon. The technology “is not yet ready for full-scale, economy-wide deployment, nor is there sufficient time to permit, finance, and build the CCS infrastructure needed for compliance by 2032,” EEI president and CEO Dan Brouillette said in a statement.

Harmful mercury and coal ash

The EPA also finalized its strongest-ever standards to cut mercury pollution and harmful particulate matter from coal-fired power plants, including from lignite coal plants, by up to 70%. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin, meaning it is poisonous to the human body and can irreversibly damage the nervous system, kidneys, liver, lungs, digestive system and immune system.

Mercury released from power plants may hurt public health in two major ways. If people breathe in the vapor, which is odorless and colorless, it can hurt their lungs, brain and kidneys and can get into their bloodstream. Mercury vapor from coal plants can also travel long distances and fall to the ground in the form of rain, snow and sleet, contaminating land and water and poisoning fish.

In addition to the new standards, power plants will have to install continuous monitoring systems looking for emissions of mercury and other toxic pollutants like arsenic, chromium, cobalt, nickel.

“This is a really important step,” said Paul Billings, national senior vice president for public policy with the American Lung Association, calling the pollutants “really bad for human health.”

In addition, EPA’s rules regulate three types of wastewater generated at coal-fired power plants and address water stored in coal ash ponds – reducing this form of pollution by close to 600 million pounds per year.

Finally, EPA is closing loopholes for toxic coal ash – making sure power plants must safely dispose of coal ash previously dumped at unregulated landfills.

“Any one of [these rules] individually is a monumental achievement,” said Holly Bender, Sierra Club chief energy officer at the Sierra Club. “Collectively, these rules send a very strong signal to the electric power industry that it is no longer okay to contribute to these significant public health harms.”
