  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
  • Your signature, name, and address
  • Seller’s signature name and address
  • Maine Certificate of title
  • Notarized signature and documents
  • Odometer disclosure

Step 1: Vehicle Inspection

Even though Maine does not require vehicle inspection, it is advisable to carry it out since it helps clear doubts on the buyer’s part. Most buyers privately pay a qualified or licensed auto mechanic to help with the inspection. You both need to agree on a common place, and date when the inspection will be held.

In addition, you should also be ready to go for test drives upon clients’ requests. Test drives are useful because it confirms to your potential buyer that the vehicle is in good condition.

Step 2: Prepare the Car for Sale

To prepare your car for sale, you need to;

  • Fix visible damages.
  • Remove all your personal belongings from the vehicle.
  • Thoroughly wash your cash to remove dust and debris.
  • Take clear photos.

Step 3: List Your Car for Sale on Marketplaces and Private Car Selling Sites

Once you have cleaned your car, create a listing for your car on different platforms to reach potential buyers. Some websites and platforms you can use to list your car include Facebook marketplace, AutoTrader, and Gumtree, among others.

When creating your listing, ensure you give detailed and comprehensive descriptions of your car to potential buyers. Include information like car model, make, color, and current condition. Additionally, you can also include if the vehicle has scratches or dents.

Step 4: Organize Vehicle Documents

Gather all vehicle documents including the owner’s manual, maintenance records, and any other documents related to the vehicle. Providing your potential buyer with detailed vehicle maintenance records provides the buyer with confidence that the car is well maintained and it is in good condition.

In addition, you also download vehicle history reports from AutoCheck or CarFax and share them with the buyer.

A certificate of title is a crucial document when selling your car. In case the vehicle has an alien in the title, the lender must show interest before the sale of vehicle advances. To achieve this you can pay off the car or ask the lienholder to provide a letter of lien release.

Step 5:  Bill of Sale

In Maine, a Bill of Sale is required when privately selling your car. You can fill out the official Bill of Sale document on the Maine DMV website. The information that needs to be included filled includes;

  • Details of the vehicle being sold
  • Address, name, and signature of the buyer
  • Address, name, and signature of the seller
  • Odometer reading at the time of dale
  • Date of sale
  • Vehicle purchase price
  • Year, make and model of the car
  • VIN

After filling the document, make a copy and keep it in your records. It will act as evidence that the car was transferred legally.

Step 6: Transfer Title

In case you have lost your vehicle title, you can fill out form MVT-8 to get a duplicate of your original vehicle title. In addition, you will be charged a $33 duplication fee and an additional $10 service fee to help process your document.

Accurately filling out a transfer will make it easy for the buyer to acquire a new license plate or transfer the vehicle.

You are both required to fill a section at the back of the title. The information that should be included are;

  • The legal name of the seller and buyer
  • Address and signature of the seller and buyer
  • Date of sale
  • Purchase price
  • Odometer reading

Moreover, if your title does not have an Odometer section, you will provide a separate form to complete to help you update the odometer reading on your current title. The form you will be given to fill out is form MVT-32. In the event that the title is co-owned, all persons listed in the title must sign.

In addition, when gifting your relative your car, follow the above procedure when transferring the vehicle owner. If you want to inherit cars from parents, relatives, or grandparents, the process above still works.

However, you must complete and file inheritance documentation with the county office and submit it along with information about the vehicle to be transferred.

Before selling your car, it is advisable to do background research to avoid underpricing or overpricing your vehicle.

Step 7: Signing the Title

To sell your vehicle, Maine motor vehicles laws indicate that you must sign the title in the presence of a notary. Failure to sign the title will lead to the state declaring that the sale of your vehicle is valid.

Step 8: Remove Plates

After the sale of the vehicle is complete, you can remove your vehicle plate. Also, Maine requires that you complete a Vehicle Sold Notice to notify them that you have sold your car. Sold notification should be filed within 21 days after the sale of the vehicle is complete.

You hand over the plate to Maine license officials or use it on any of your vehicle titles. Additionally, you can complete a notarized Plate Cancellation Request (form MVR-60 to officially cancel all your license plates.
