Champion Koech, Mutai, Barno and Tanui to lead home golfer at Nandi Shield tournament

Defending champion Nelson Koech, captain Kimeli Mutai, Elly Barno and others will lead home golfers for this weekend’s Nandi Bears Open Shield title, the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships series on par 72 Nandi Bears golf club.

The tournament will start with the subsidiary on Friday before the main two-day event that tees off on Saturday in a 36-hole show.

Club captain Kimeli Mutai said that they have managed to secure a sponsorship deal, expecting a packed field.

“After hosting a successful event last year, I know the numbers will increase this year. However, we are prepared for them and there is no course for alarm,” said Mutai.

He said they have maintained the sponsors, who supported the inaugural edition.

“We managed to get the National Bank of Kenya (NBK) as our sponsor and we will have good prizes for all. This time, the course is in good condition since it has been raining in this area,” he said.

Koech, who won the inaugural tournament last year when he fired one under par 143 gross for the title edging out top-brass golfers, will be hoping to defend his title on home course.

“I have been focusing more on chipping as I seek to retain my title. Just like last year, I am doing a lot of practice and home advantage should play in my favour,” he said.

He said due to financial constraints, he has not played many tournaments across the country like last year and lies in position 20 with 20 points compared to last year when he finished the circuit in position 7.
