Is online betting legal in Pakistan?

Online betting in Pakistan has been a topic of discussion for quite some time. In Pakistan, the legality of online gambling exists in a grey area without clear laws governing it. However, there’s no need to worry.

As long as you avoid offline betting and stick to reputable cricket betting sites accessible to Pakistani users, you should encounter no issues. Only 18+ years old bettors are allowed to bet to ensure a safe gambling environment.

The operators we recommend in this guide are licensed by reputable regulators like the Malta Gaming Authority or Curacao Gambling Board. This signifies their legitimacy and fairness in the global gambling community.

According to Islamic Law, Betting is haram. Despite this, there are a number of Muslim countries where land-based Casinos are located, for example Malaysia. Online Betting is also prevalent in a number of these countries, especially Pakistan and Bangladesh. So, provided you are comfortable from a religious perspective, there is nothing legally stopping you from betting online in Pakistan. However, we do recommend only doing so with a legal betting site.

How do I know if a betting site is legal and trustworthy?

It is important to only bet with a licenced betting site, as they are held to certain ethical and operational standards that unlicensed sites do not. To check, scroll down to the bottom of the betting site you have accessed. If they have a licence, you will see the licence details and either a Curacao Gambling Board or Malta Gaming Authority logo, which shows that they are licenced.

Singapore No Deposit Bonus VS Free Spins Bonuses

No deposit bonuses and free spins bonuses are two types of rewards that online casinos offer to attract new players and keep existing ones happy.

A no deposit bonus is a bonus you get without putting any of your own money down. They’re usually given to new players to help them check out the casino’s games. There is no deposit required.

Free spins bonuses give you a set number of free spins on a specific slot game. These bonuses are often given to new players as part of a welcome package or to existing players as an ongoing promotion.

Each bonus type has its own set of rules that you need to follow in order to cash out any bonus balance or winnings.

How to Win Real Money with No Deposit Bonus Singapore

Winning real money in a casino with free credits requires a combination of luck and strategy. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for every game, we can provide some general strategies to help boost your success rate. Give them a try to enhance your winning potential.

  • Use the demo version: This trial mode allows you to understand slot principles even before activating the bonus. By doing so, you can form an impression and determine whether accepting the promotion is worthwhile. The casino offers demo credits in place of real money for placing bets.
  • Review the T&Cs for receiving and wagering the bonus.
  • Choose high RTP: Opt for options with the highest return to player (RTP) percentages. Each slot machine displays the number along with the potential winnings the game offers.

With a bit of research and some smart choices, you could potentially win big on free spins and walk away with real money in your pocket.

Final Words on Singapore No Deposit Online Casinos

While most casinos offer promotions such as free bets and bonuses, it is important to note that most of these promotions require a deposit to be made beforehand. However, with the best Singapore online casinos like BK8, 96M, Me88, Maxim888, or 1xBet, users can trust that they will receive the promised rewards for their loyalty.

1xBet stands out for its focus on sports and the provision of risk-free bets on games, while other contenders present a diverse range of promotions. These are modern slots, mobile casinos, and sports betting, all showering users with free money incentives. Notably, Me88 and Maxim888 further elevate interest by offering extra and bonus offers for gambling through their respective apps.

32 Thoughts: Where will the Coyotes call home after Mullett Arena?

• Will Toronto trade its first-round pick?
• Tanev, Hanifin, Guentzel and a look around the trade market
• The NHL’s new “good” problem with the Skills Competition

On Tuesday night, I took Steph to see Neil deGrasse Tyson. Among the fascinating things we learned: there is a one-in-2,700 chance an asteroid named “Bennu” will hit Earth in September 2182.

Hopefully by then we’ll know the fate of the Arizona Coyotes

While the Coyotes maintain they are looking at several arena options, they did confirm last week they applied to buy “state trust land” in north Phoenix as a potential site for a new facility. That would create an open auction where owner Alex Meruelo can try to post the highest bid. But there are zero guarantees.

The Arizona State Land Department controls the process. Its Board of Appeals meets Thursday. The agenda is posted online, and according to the clerk, is final. There was nothing indicating Coyotes. (The next meeting is in March.) But I’ve done enough government coverage to know they could discuss it in-camera, away from prying eyes.

Even if the auction is granted, what is the timeline? One source indicated they thought the bidding could be as soon as April and another said July. Again, with no guarantee the team will win.

While NHLPA Executive Director Marty Walsh is throwing fire and brimstone at the Coyotes, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is playing good cop, saying last week, “I’m hopeful and reasonably confident that (Meruelo) is going to do what he says.”

I have a theory.

Bettman’s a lawyer, a good one. This seems like Meruelo’s last stand. When it comes to the Coyotes, deadlines have proven to be…flexible. The NHL doesn’t want this ownership to end the season without a legitimate, detailed plan. Whether a sale or relocation or Meruelo says, Wolf of Wall Street style, “I’m not leaving!” it’s going to be complicated. Meruelo’s a fighter, and Bettman knows this could end in the legal octagon.

The commish isn’t going to say or do anything Meruelo can use against him. He’s going to make sure no one can argue the NHL wasn’t anything but 100 per cent supportive even though more and more it looks like the league’s lost faith. While there’s lots of hope Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia is the long-term answer, it’s going to be on his terms and when the team is officially for sale. “Leverage through silence,” as one source said.

Ottawa just sold for $950M, so what is Arizona worth? Meruelo — as he should — would try to recoup losses and get the best possible deal, but what is that? They have no arena and low ticket revenues, although Forbes reported the team is cash-flow positive, which is no small thing. Does he sell directly to a new owner? Or, does he sell to the NHL, which flips it to a new owner in (preferably for the NHL) Arizona or Utah? Or, does it get so bad the league tries the nuclear option and revokes the franchise? Whatever the case, there’s going to be a battle.

It’s tough on the players, staff and families wondering about their futures. Those are the people I feel for.

32 THOUGHTS

1. Very interesting note sent by the NHL on Wednesday, announcing “a comprehensive audit of the hits statistic in every game this season,” and “appropriate adjustments.” (There was also a promise audits will now be done on a nightly basis, to be updated by the next morning.) That led to jokes about teams who inflate these totals, but it was the opposite. Teams were informed that hits per game were adjusted up by almost nine, closer to what we’d seen in previous seasons. What it says is that agents or NHLPA genius Roland Lee, who use these numbers as salary comparables or in arbitration, noticed the drop and pushed for clarity.

2. One trend gaining traction is teams destined to pick later in the first round aren’t married to their picks. Vancouver and Winnipeg already moved them. Sportsnet draft gurus Jason Bukala and Sam Cosentino see a drop, and several organizations agree with them.

3. One exception may be Toronto. If the Maple Leafs trade this year’s first, they will have one pick in the top two rounds of the next three drafts (a first-rounder in 2026). It’s not impossible they decide to do move it, but they definitely prefer the opposite and aren’t interested in moving Easton Cowan, Matthew Knies or Fraser Minten (their most asked-about youth).

One case where I do believe they would have done so is if they had acquired both Chris Tanev and Nikita Zadorov, as they tried before the latter’s move to the Lions Gate Bridge. There’s no doubt in my mind the Maple Leafs want Tanev, but Calgary is holding to see if that first-rounder comes into play. It’s poker, but if Toronto really wanted to do that, it would be done already. We will see. He would help them, and they know it. (Maybe Toronto solves this by trying to trade for both Tanev and Noah Hanifin.) They are looking for another centre, as well.

4. I can only imagine how tired Tanev is of this, already. There are a lot of teams interested in him, but it’s a unique market. There are teams who aren’t ready to win this year, but are determined to be a playoff team next year (Ottawa). There are teams who aren’t yet sure if rentals make sense for them (New Jersey). There are teams who like him but find it tricky cap-wise and trade-wise (Boston, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Vancouver). I suspect Dallas lurks, which makes a lot of sense. Undoubtedly, there are others I’m missing. He’s the Taylor Swift of trade deadline coverage.

5. Other teams believe the Senators are extremely serious about Tanev — if not now, then if he hits the open market in the summer.

6. Noah Hanifin knows he owes Calgary a decision, and the expectation is it is coming soon.

7. Jake Guentzel was another to check on post All-Star. Nothing really to report, just that there’s no panic. Everyone seems comfortable for now, in no rush.

8. Philadelphia can extend Travis Konecny on July 1, but the Flyers are trying to get the legwork done sooner. You’re going to see a real attempt at this. The prediction is Nick Seeler stays, and Jamie Drysdale’s arrival puts Sean Walker on the move (Edmonton and Tampa Bay are among interested parties). Rasmus Ristolainen’s stock is up, but the contract is tricky.

9. That brings us to Scott Laughton. The first-rounders going for rental centres have GMs thinking. If you’re Pat Verbeek (Adam Henrique), you’re smiling at the market, with several teams looking for middlemen. (The Rangers are looking for two of them. Going to be watching Tyler Johnson, now off injured reserve.) What that’s also done is bring out the managers who have a centre with term. Those include Nic Dowd and Laughton. The latter’s down three minutes a game from last year, and is at his lowest playing time in four seasons. If that’s the future, a move is better for everyone. I would expect teams to call on Boone Jenner, for the same reason. But he’s got a partial no-trade and you can’t see Columbus doing it without a massive return.

10. There was a short explosion around his AHL demotion, but the Blue Jackets made it verrrrrrrry clear they are not moving David Jiricek. They see the potential — and so does everyone else.

11. By the way, remember that review during the Jan. 27 Columbus-Vancouver game where a penalty was taken from Ian Cole and given to Tyler Myers? At the end of the day, I support getting the call right…and, if anyone deserved a major, it was Myers. But, another GM not involved in the game said he felt Myers should have got a major and Cole a minor, giving the Blue Jackets a two-minute five-on-three and three more minutes of five-on-four. Tough crowd.

12. Washington could hold Dowd, but are looking to move Joel Edmundson. All the best to Evgeny Kuznetsov, back in the Player Assistance Program. His salary is off the team’s cap at this time.

13. Buffalo’s got a lot of good prospects, a really talented group not yet in the NHL. Over the next few months, it’s very possible some will be used to get what the Sabres need. There’s not room for all of them, and teams always wrestle with when someone outgrows the AHL. I’m very curious to see which young Sabres get a look over the next little while. I also expect Erik Johnson moves. That’s a no-brainer for a contender.

14. Boston is another team that, like Toronto, will be careful about futures. Even with Charlie Coyle’s surge, the Bruins took a run at Elias Lindholm, but last year’s “all-in” push meant they couldn’t (and wouldn’t) offer anything close to what Vancouver did. The Bruins, I believe, were the team that wanted an extension with Lindholm, too. If he hits the free agent market, he’s a target.

15. Edmonton’s 16-game winning streak ended in an entertaining game, a 3-1 loss to Vegas — a showcase in front of a frenzied Golden Knights crowd and a Super Bowl-fueled media throng. If the Four Nations Faceoff started tomorrow, Adin Hill is Canada’s starter (although Penguins fans feel Tristan Jarry is not getting enough respect). Hill stoned the Oilers. Oilers GM Ken Holland did not want to discuss moves while things were going so well for his team, like it was bad karma. But he will use the rest of this month, as Edmonton’s schedule toughens, to determine where he’s going to add. How Dylan Holloway plays impacts the Oilers’ decisions.

16. Same for Viktor Arvidsson in Los Angeles. One King is not enjoying all of the slander: “I’m telling you, you are giving up on us way too early.”

17. DJ Smith — newly hired as Jim Hiller’s assistant — was very much on the radar to coach Canada at the World Championships.

18. Small thing, but a big thing from Connor McDavid: during our 32 Thoughts podcast interview, talking about goaltending, he mentioned Stuart Skinner, Calvin Pickard…and Jack Campbell. That did not go unnoticed. Campbell was on a heater at AHL Bakersfield a couple of weeks ago, but, as mentioned, the Oilers were in no rush to mess with what worked. It’s a crazy world. A month ago, the idea of Ilya Samsonov leading Toronto seemed as far-fetched as Tracy Chapman showing up at the Grammys. It’s very possible the Oilers will dabble in the goalie market, but you never know if you’re going to need someone again.

19. What Toronto did with Samsonov may become a blueprint. Instead of sending struggling netminders to play AHL games, do the mental re-set before anything else. It was a rocky road for Campbell, although Carolina’s Antti Raanta made it clear getting that action benefitted him.

20. When it comes to goalies, Marc-Andre Fleury will have the biggest impact. He’s earned the right to call his shot; nothing happens without his approval. Fleury initially was unhappy to move from Vegas to Chicago, and needed convincing to go to Minnesota. But the guy eats, breathes and loves hockey, so he adapts upon arrival. This screams Carolina, Colorado or Edmonton, all playoff-bound. But, in some of those situations, he wouldn’t be the starter, so that factors in. Again, it’s his call, and deservedly so.

21. Others to watch: I get mixed answers on Jacob Markstrom. It’s been mentioned to me several times — he doesn’t enjoy his name being out there, and Calgary is very, very sensitive to that. It’s got to be something the Flames can’t say no to, or a place Markstrom tells them he wants to go — which has not happened. Of course, that sounds like a negotiating ploy, but it’s the truth. Calgary’s preference is to leave him alone. He’s been very good. When that happens, business takes care of itself.

I don’t believe there’s been much talk around Dan Vladar. Elvis Merzlikins’ availability was not a secret even before everything boiled over. The simplest thing would be for him to play like he did in shutting out St. Louis right before the All-Star break. With Anaheim in a rebuild, John Gibson wants meaningful games. Verbeek is willing to accommodate, but it is complex. Verbeek is a tough negotiator, and there are two prices: one for the player and one to retain money. There was a time I thought the Ducks might prefer to move the contract and take what they could — but that’s not the case. Biggest concern: Gibson’s health. If you’re going to make this plunge, he needs to prove he can stay healthy.

Montreal GM Kent Hughes said at the halfway mark he could keep all three of his goalies for the entire season. Hughes has set a price (believed to key on a draft pick), but, like Gibson, that varies depending on retention. (Allen has one more year at $3.85M.) There is now a book on Hughes: while the Canadiens rebuild, he’s content with setting a price and waiting until he gets what he wants. Remember: Allen has a partial no-trade.

22. Total wild-card: Kaapo Kahkonen. An unrestricted free agent, and his underlying numbers were extremely good for much of the season. Several Sharks are more than happy to tell you Kahkonen and MacKenzie Blackwood deserve much better than what they’ve had to deal with. Kahkonen said experience has taught him to “slow down the game. I understand so much more.” Teams definitely noticed. What they worry about is he doesn’t have a resume in high-pressure games. So, he’s a bit of an unknown.

23. Brock Nelson had a good description of Patrick Roy: “He’s passionate, but not in a military, ‘You do this’ way. It’s more of an, ‘I need you to do this’ way.” Under Roy, Mathew Barzal is up from 19:22 per game (16:24 at even strength) to 23:47 (20:01). Islanders players absolutely thought Barzal was going to win the skills competition at All-Star.

24. McDavid really set the tone asked of him for All-Star Weekend when he blasted through the final event of the Skills Competition to take the $1M prize. All he needed was to lollygag and finish second, but no sir, that was not going to happen. With a few days to think about it, I thought dropping the event from 12 skaters to 10 might help, but the NHL might have another “good” problem — more players want the opportunity. I heard at least two voiced displeasure at being left out. The Raleigh News & Observer’s Chip Alexander reported Sebastian Aho was one, but he wasn’t alone.

25. Nikita Kucherov is my podcast white whale, but he’s not interested: “I’m not big on podcasts.” Ah, memories of high-school rejection.

26. Sounds like the Four Nations Faceoff plan will be a break from Feb. 10-21, 2025 to hold the event. David Pastrnak wasn’t the only player to register his disappointment about not being included. While league and union officials were sympathetic, they felt it was more important to get the international calendar started.

27. In the aftermath of Cutter Gauthier’s trade to Anaheim, I can guarantee one thing: NHL teams reached out to their prospects, making sure all is well between them and the organization. Other GMs were asking their staff: “Do we have any reason to believe this could happen to us?”

28. Macklin Celebrini had a hilarious interview after scoring twice to lead Boston University past Boston College 4-3 in the opening round of the Beanpot. The overwhelming favourite to go first overall at The Sphere in June has had at least one better line in his young hockey life. His father, Rick, is in his sixth season as the Golden State Warriors’ director of sports medicine and performance. Members of the organization, including head coach Steve Kerr and defensive wizard Draymond Green, learned about Celebrini’s family. Last year, when Macklin played for the USHL’s Chicago Steel, Green remembered.

“A couple weeks before our game in Chicago, Draymond asked if Macklin would be playing when we were there,” Rick Celebrini said. “When I said yes, he said, ‘I want to go.’” Celebrini rented a van for him, Green, Kerr, some coaches and members of the performance staff. Imagine this group showing up at a rink. “(The Steel) were very supportive,” Celebrini laughed. “We went in the back and had a suite. But people in the stands saw him smiling, started pointing and taking pictures. It was a Saturday night in Chicago. Green usually goes to a comedy club. Kerr played (for the Bulls). There were many other things they could have done.”

Celebrini was incredibly appreciative they came, but there was one problem. “It was a stinker, a terrible game,” he said, a 4-2 loss to the Madison Capitols. “They left early. I told Macklin after the game, ‘Hey, they couldn’t even sit through the game.’ His comment to me was, ‘Yeah, but I sat through some of their bad games in the past.’” Holy smokes, what a quote. I love that.

29. Did Green say anything positive about Macklin? “He did,” Rick answered. “His presence and physicality. Macklin was fist-pumping at one point, and Draymond loved it. Both him and Steve, despite him having a poor game, said he looked like a player you could tell had a high IQ — processes the game a step ahead.”

Steve Nash is godfather to the Celebrini children, and Rick says all of his children benefit from that. “Seeing the work that goes into it. The detail. The amount of work that goes into success, it’s most impactful to be able to see that first hand. That’s the biggest thing, always non-negotiable. Compete. Put in the work and compete your ass off.” Great advice for us all.

30. On Monday’s massive pod, Jeff and I went through rumours of a “merger” (for lack of a better term) between the NCAA and the CHL, where NCAA coaches are being presented with the idea of offering CHLers eligibility in their league post-juniors. The reaction has been…fascinating and illuminating.

The CHL seems to be very much in favour of it. The NCAA, well, it depends who you talk to. There are some coaches who feel very strongly they are winning the battle against the CHL and see this as an unnecessary concession. There are others who support it, and others simply asking, “Where do we think the best players will end up if this happens?”

Then, there are the lawyers. We are into a new era of NCAA athletics with Name-Image-Likeness and, earlier this week, a ruling that Dartmouth basketball players are school employees, therefore eligible to vote to form a union. For every lawyer, there is one who will argue against them, but I heard from a couple who said that coaches not liking the idea may be forced to yield in this new age.

There would be an enormous ripple effect across minor/junior hockey in both countries — and the NCAA does not move quickly — but it sounds like a vote could be held this spring or summer. Marek reported the current Top Prospect event will be replaced with a two-game series between CHL players and opponents based in the United States, so it’s clear the bigger picture is on everyone’s radar.

31. The first sport I covered at Western was women’s soccer. The second was men’s hockey. This could be very bad for University Hockey in Canada, and I hate that. But I think we’re headed in this direction sooner or later.

32. We all want answers, but must prepare for a long, hard road before any kind of clarity into exactly what happened at the 2018 Team Canada World Junior Team’s championship celebration. London Police didn’t say much at Monday’s media conference, except making it very clear they feel the woman wasn’t given proper treatment by their initial investigators. But we probably won’t see a trial for a couple of years.

The strong comments from the players’ lawyers — and some of those from Bettman — support what’s been believed for a long time: absent criminal charges, both Hockey Canada and the NHL faced significant legal pushback if their investigations became public. (Hockey Canada’s report remains in the appeal process.) Article 18-A of the CBA gives Bettman power to govern off-ice misconduct, but the NHL will let their contracts expire in June and it’s extremely hard to see any of them in the league until this process is complete — at least. There’s still so much to come, including the likelihood other members of the 2018 team will be subpoenaed to testify at trial. That could be a very big part of the Crown’s case. It’s going to be a painful process before we get the full truth. Be sensitive to those who will find the revelations very hurtful.

Aston Villa 1-3 Chelsea: Enzo Fernandez hits stunner as Blues reach FA Cup fifth round

Mauricio Pochettino says Chelsea are not the same team they were from 20 years and people must “move on” after he lauded “one of the best” performances of their season.

The Blues were 3-1 winners against Aston Villa in their FA Cup fourth-round replay at Villa Park, which set up a home time against Leeds in the fifth round in the week commencing February 26.

After scoring a stunning free-kick, Enzo Fernandez took off his match shirt and displayed his name and number to the crowd. The reasoning is unclear, but the game overall marked a clear improvement from Chelsea

And in his post-match press conference, Pochettino launched a staunch defence of his players after he was questioned about Fernandez’s goal celebration.

He said: “We need to stop this thing that we are Chelsea from 20 years ago. We are not this type of Chelsea anymore. Now we need to move on and we need to create this project.

“We need to move on, I don’t care if people are happy or not happy with my speech. I care for the club, I care for my players, I want to help the players.

“We are going to fight, I don’t care what the people say. I’m not more sad or happy today after a win because we have experience, this type of project needs time and trust.

“We cannot build a team to challenge because you need to fix too many things, you need to observe, analyse and compete.

“We are building a project which may be one year, two years, three years. Today you can see we were ready to fight. We fight for the fans, the badge, the coaching staff. Now the challenge is to be consistent.”

Pochettino: One of our best performances of the season

Image:
Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher scored his own fine goal at Villa Park

The replay was a game that flipped performance and form on its head. Aston Villa had thrashed Sheffield United at the weekend, while Chelsea had conceded four goals in each of their last two matches.

But the Blues dominated the first half against a lacklustre Villa, with Conor Gallagher (11) – scoring his first goal of the season – and Nicolas Jackson (21) seeing them into a 2-0 lead.

Fernandez’s stunning 54th-minute free-kick was the pick of the goals though. Moussa Diaby’s stoppage-time consolation made things nervy for the visitors, but Aston Villa were unable to complete an unlikely comeback.

When asked by ITV Sport if it was one of Chelsea’s best performances of the season, Pochettino replied: “I think so… it is one of the best or maybe the best of the season.

“It is a very good moment for us and I’m so happy with performance. The players were enjoying their football and that is what pleased me the most.”

How Chelsea found their form

Despite a positive opening from Aston Villa, it was Chelsea who dominated the encounter and went ahead inside 11 minutes.

Jackson found the impressive Noni Madueke in the middle with his left-wing cross, with the latter pulling it back to Gallagher. It was then a delightful, curling effort from the midfielder into the top left corner.

Chelsea soon took a commanding 2-0 lead. Malo Gusto sent in a peach of a delivery for the waiting Jackson, who was unmarked as he nodded home past Emi Martinez.

Team news

  • Aston Villa made one change from their win against Sheffield United. Matty Cash came in for the injured Ezri Konsa.
  • Chelsea made three changes from their defeat against Wolves. Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke and Benoit Badiashile came in for Raheem Sterling, Christopher Nkunku and Thiago Silva.

Aston Villa’s best chance came on the stroke of half-time. A Ben Chilwell foul throw gifted the hosts their own, which they took quickly. However, the opening came to nothing as John McGinn lashed an effort into the stands.

Ten minutes into the second half, Fernandez added Chelsea’s third with a stunning free-kick. He won it after he was fouled by Youri Tielemans just outside the area, and curled a world-class effort through Martinez’s outstretched hands.

Aston Villa’s performance did improve from then on – although it was a bit too little, too late. McGinn had a few openings, while Alex Moreno nodded wide, but they did score a late consolation through Diaby.

His shot through the area fizzed through legs before nestling into the net via the goalpost. But despite the nervy ending, it was not enough to force extra-time as Aston Villa exited the FA Cup.

Chilwell: We needed that reaction

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell to ITV Sport:

“It was exactly the reaction we wanted and needed. It wasn’t about wanting a reaction. We needed it. Fair play to all of the boys.

“We wanted that pressure. We thrived off it. The confidence before the game in the changing room was the best I have seen it – the togetherness. We delivered on the pitch today.

“As a club, the players, manager, the staff, the fans everyone involved in the club. It wasn’t just the manager. Everyone associated with the club needed that today.”

Emery: Chelsea were more clinical

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery:

“We were excited and motivated and we started well, we didn’t score but we were feeling good.

“When they were getting in our box we were not being strong and they were affecting us. They got into our box with some crosses and were clinical. I was more or less feeling the difference was the clinical way for them.

“We scored a little bit late and had no time to score the second goal. We have to accept and analyse the match. To beat them is not easy when you’re not being clinical.”

MANILA, Philippines—Mark Barroca has been one of the leaders for Magnolia for as long as one can remember.

So in one of the most important games of the season, Barroca showed why he’s trusted by the Hotshots by powering them to an 88-80 victory over San Miguel in Game 3 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals at Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.

When coach Chito Victolero needed it the most, the veteran guard top-scored for Magnolia with 20 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals to avoid going down 0-3 at the hands of the Beermen.

MANILA, Philippines–Magnolia is now on the board in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals after putting out an 88-80 victory over San Miguel Beer on Wednesday, trimming its deficit in the series to 2-1 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Mark Barroca anchored the offensive attack, Aris Dionisio knocked down key outside shots and the Hotshots leaned on their trademark grindout effort on the defensive end to get back in the championship tussle after dropping the first two games.

MANILA, Philippines—PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial jogged Calvin Abueva’s memory to teach him a lesson in Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

Right before the tip-off for Game 3 at Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, Marcial met with members of the media to bare his conversation with Abueva after his antics on Sunday merited him a whopping P100,000 fine for mocking San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent’s eyesight disability.

According to the commissioner,  he reminded the Magnolia swingman about his lengthy indefinite ban from the PBA that stemmed from several incidents.

San Miguel will try to set a new team mark and move closer to rewriting another on Wednesday when it battles Magnolia once again in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

And yet, no one in the team seems to be interested in talking about a franchise record 12th straight win with a victory in their 7:30 p.m. Game 3 encounter at Smart Araneta Coliseum—with that same win moving the Beermen closer to a record-extending 29th league title.

MANILA, Philippines—San Miguel Beermen may not run out of names they call themselves soon, and rightfully so.

Jericho Cruz, who’s part of the Beermen’s second unit, admitted that other than the “Death 15” moniker that coach Jorge Gallent gave them, they have another term for San Miguel’s bench.

Inside that “Death 15” lies the “Martilyo (hammer) Gang.” Don’t get it twisted–it’s not a heinous gang that does its crime with hammers.

MANILA, Philippines—Magnolia’s Calvin Abueva has been fined P100,000 for his mocking gesture towards San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent in Game 2 of the PBA  Finals.

On Tuesday, the PBA released a statement saying Abueva has been penalized after violating a league rule which stated that “any person who offends the dignity of any person on account of ‘physical disability’ shall be subject to a fine not lower than P100,000.”

In a huddle with reporters just by the team’s dugout, Magnolia head coach Chito Victolero on Sunday night identified a laundry list of issues his charges have to address to make their PBA Finals series with San Miguel truly competitive.

“We need to do a better job finding better shots,” he said with a long face on the heels of a 109-85 Game 2 beatdown at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. “We need to fix our transition defense also because they had so many threes, especially in the first quarter.”

Man Utd stadium plans: Will Sir Jim Ratcliffe build a new ground and what will it mean for Old Trafford?

Are Manchester United getting a new stadium? What will it mean for the future of Old Trafford? And how much will this all cost? Sky Sports takes a look at the key questions…

Could Man Utd get a new stadium?

The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday evening that Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to create a new stadium for Manchester United, who have spent the last 114 years at Old Trafford, which holds nearly 74,000 spectators.

The plan, according to the report, would see United create a ‘Wembley of the North’ to rival the 90,000-seater national stadium in north London.

Billionaire Ratcliffe, who founded the INEOS group, is acquiring a 25 per cent stake of United for a fee of £1.2bn, which moved a step closer after a successful vote at an extraordinary general meeting on Monday.

Dave Kidd from The Sun and John Cross from The Mirror discuss the story that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is potentially looking at replacing Old Trafford with a ‘Wembley of the North’

What is Man Utd’s stance on this?

As of Wednesday morning, Sky Sports News understands all options are still on the table with regards to Old Trafford and no decisions have been made at this stage.

According to the Telegraph, Ratcliffe is against the idea of relocating the club but feels supporters will be behind a stadium move if they stay within the same land.

United own around 43 acres of land that is ripe for development around their Old Trafford stadium. Around a quarter of the total land around Old Trafford, estimated at around 100 acres, is said to be unused.

As part of the Future of Football series, Jim Heverin, a director at Zaha Hadid Architects, said the manner in which Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool have renovated their own stadia, rather than building new ones, is the template United should follow.

“At Old Trafford, you’d definitely expect them to be thinking about repurposing and not going anywhere else. Look at what Liverpool has been doing with these small modifications and upgrades. That looks like the future and not brand new stadiums,” he said.

“I know why Everton are moving but that is looking more like the old way of looking at new stadiums, particularly when you have something already that is an asset.”

Gary Neville has been very vocal about the need to improve the Old Trafford facilities. “Maybe what Liverpool have done is the way forward,” he said late last year.

“If there is a shortage of funds, maybe get one or two stands, absolutely world-class, and the other two follow up over the next five to 10 years. That would be a plan.”

What’s wrong with Old Trafford?

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Speaking on his podcast Gary Neville called on Manchester United’s new owners to make improving Old Trafford one of their top priorities

Oh, quite a lot. “Old Trafford is falling down” is the first line of a chant that fans of rival clubs have continually used to point fun at United this season.

The falling standards of United’s ground have been well-documented. Videos of run-down parts of the ground have circulated online in recent years and even though it is the largest club stadium in England, it was not selected to be one of the host venues for Euro 2028 in the UK and Ireland.

Neville has been very vocal about the need to improve the Old Trafford facilities. “I’ve heard that there is only a couple of hundred million of pounds or so being spent on Old Trafford. That’s nowhere near enough,” he said late last year.

“I’d rather have £200m spent on the old stadium and have two parts of Old Trafford looking absolutely amazing.

“It’s important that you have pride in where you play and Old Trafford is an amazing stadium.”

The last time the club undertook major works on Old Trafford was in May 2006, when 8,000 seats were added to the north-west and north-east quadrants of the stadium.

That work was approved before the Glazer family took control of the club in June 2005, meaning no work has been done to renovate Old Trafford since United’s majority shareholders took over 19 years ago.

What have other clubs done recently?

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, opened in 2019, was Populous' biggest recent footballing project
Image:
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opened in 2019

Staying on the same land is a move Tottenham made when they developed their new stadium. Spurs left their old White Hart Lane ground in 2016, spent nearly three seasons at Wembley, before moving back into their new 61,000-seater venue in early 2019.

One issue is that Old Trafford is located between a railway line and a canal, making the logistics relatively challenging. While Brentford managed to overcome a similar challenge for their Gtech Community Stadium in 2020, their stadium is much smaller, holding just 17,000 fans.

The renovation of the Aviva Stadium in Dublin’s Lansdowne Road also saw railway-line-related challenges, with a line running alongside the west of the stadium. That renovation was completed in 2010.

And the big one… how much would this cost?

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's proposed three-person committee
Image:
How will Man Utd pay for a potential new stadium?

The DailyTelegraph reports that expanding Old Trafford would cost United around £800m, whereas a new ground would cost around £1.5bn to £2bn.

Tottenham’s new stadium cost the club around £1.2bn, according to Spurs owner Daniel Levy in an interview in November 2020.

As part of his £1.2bn deal to buy a stake in United, Ratcliffe is putting £239m into the club to help boost the club’s infrastructure. Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim, who rivalled Ratcliffe in the running to control United, was willing to pledge £1.27bn for the same work.

United could lobby The Government to fund part of this stadium project as part of the ‘levelling up’ pledge, according to the Telegraph. Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said last week: “Whatever it is they [Ratcliffe and INEOS] want, we will facilitate and we will be there to make sure the club is set up for the future.”

But if those requests are not granted, then the only way United can afford this stadium is if either Ratcliffe ups his £239m pledge, the Glazers suddenly invest in infrastructure for the first time, or the club borrows more money.

And United already have around £969m of debt, according to data from March 2023. So where will the money come from?

Super Bowl Notebook: Chiefs could be without three key players vs. 49ers

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could be without three key players when they play the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney appeared to get into a dispute with Chiefs management about a hip injury that sidelined him for six games, going on Instagram to say he didn’t receive the proper injury designation for the AFC championship game at Baltimore on Jan. 28.

But he told NFL Media on Monday that his expletive-filled rant was aimed at a New York Giants fan and not the Chiefs and called his outburst a mistake.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid didn’t commit Tuesday to playing Toney, opening the way for a potential healthy scratch.

“We’ll see how that goes,” Reid said. “He’s been practicing, and we’ll see whether he’s up or not.”

Also, Reid wasn’t optimistic running back Jerick McKinnon or guard Joe Thuney would play.

McKinnon has been on injured reserve since Dec. 24 with a groin injury and hasn’t practiced.

“It’s slim for him to be out there,” Reid said.

Thuney didn’t play against the Ravens because of a pectoral injury.

“It’s strength and making sure that he’s in a position that he doesn’t get hurt worse than what he’s got,” Reid said. “We’ll see (whether Thuney practices). I think it’s a long shot.”

GOING ALL OUT

49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks called out his unit last week for not playing hard on every play of their 34-31 victory over the Detroit Lions in the NFC championship.

Safety Tashaun Gipson agreed.

“That’s something that never needs to be coached,” Gipson said. “That’s something that never needs to be addressed. This is the National Football League. You’re here on the biggest stage. Those plays are unacceptable. Led to two touchdowns.

“That film (session) was hard. Obviously, you had to see that. You had to hear some choice words. But that’s not our brand of football. We’re a lot better football team than that, so it’s not something I’m worried about moving forward.”

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said lack of effort was an issue, but there were other problems the Niners had in trying to stop Detroit’s running attack in the first half. The Lions rushed for 148 yards in the first 30 minutes, but only 34 after that.

“When you play an eight-man front, it just takes one guy to out of the gap for there to be only one (defender) left,” Shanahan said. “That’s stuff we’ve got to do a lot better at.”

EXPANDING CHIEFS FAN BASE

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt was at a function about a week ago when a woman in her mid-20s approached him. She explained that she was never a football fan, even though everyone else in her family were Dallas Cowboys diehards, but that as a “Swiftie” of the highest regard she keenly followed pop superstar Taylor Swift’s every move.

Naturally, that means she now keenly follows the Chiefs.

Ever since the 14-time Grammy-winning songstress began dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce last year, the franchise has seen a noticeable growth in fans in what Hunt called “that young female demographic.” They are driving up TV ratings for games, buying merchandise and apparel by the truckload, and throwing their lot into a team many knew nothing about.

“There’s no doubt that her being a fan has put more intense focus on the team than we would have had otherwise, and has opened up the fanbase to a whole new demographic that we really didn’t have,” Hunt told a small group of reporters on Tuesday.

“Having Taylor as a Chiefs fan is very unique,” Hunt added. “I don’t ever do an interview without someone asking me about it. I frequently have dads come up to me and say, ‘My 10-to-12-year-old daughters never used to watch football, but now they tell me any time the Chiefs are playing to tell them, so they can come and watch.’”

All those Swifties will no doubt tune into the Super Bowl. Swift is expected to make a mad dash from Tokyo, where she will be performing on her Eras Tour the previous night, across the Pacific so that she can arrive in Las Vegas in time for kickoff.

MORE FEMALE STAR POWER

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, the reigning women’s college basketball player of the year, continues to sell out arenas at home and on the road as she chases the NCAA Division I scoring record.

Her brother was the backup quarterback at rival Iowa State to 49ers second-year starter Brock Purdy. Blake Clark will be the best man in Purdy’s upcoming wedding.

“Caitlin, I wasn’t around as much, but obviously just through Blake, we’d always watch her,” Purdy said. “What a baller she was from day one. Obviously, even high school. We knew that she was going to be a game-changer. To see her now, just absolutely killing it, couldn’t be happier for her.”

Clark is 66 points from breaking the NCAA record of 3,527 held by former Washington star and current Las Vegas Aces All-Star Kelsey Plum.

5 high-ranked UFC fighters who haven’t fought in ages

It’s now been over 10 years since the UFC introduced rankings, and while they’re highly useful for many reasons, they’re also flawed.

Most notably, the UFC often seems reluctant to remove fighters from the rankings, meaning that they currently contain a number of stars who haven’t fought in a long time.

Whether the promotion removes these fighters for inactivity in the near future remains to be seen, as the rankings can often change randomly.

For now, though, here are five high-ranked UFC fighters who haven’t fought in ages.

#5. Aleksandar Rakic – No.5-ranked UFC light heavyweight (last fought May 2022)

youtube-cover

With an alarming total of five different champions since Jon Jones vacated the 205 pound title in 2020, the UFC’s light heavyweight division seems to have been in a constant state of flux over the last few years.

That probably explains why Aleksandar Rakic has managed to remain ranked at No.5 in the division despite spending the best part of two years on the shelf.

‘Rocket’ appeared to be living up to his nickname and was shooting up the rankings after beating the likes of Anthony Smith and Thiago Santos leading into 2022.

Those wins set him up for a big fight with former titleholder Jan Blachowicz, and had the Austrian won that one, he probably would’ve been in line for a shot at the gold.

Unfortunately, that fight saw Rakic blow out his knee, completely tearing his ACL and leaving him out of action for an extended period.

At this stage, it’s hard to make an argument for Rakic’s high ranking. The only fighter on his list of wins who remains even semi-relevant is Smith, with four of his other victims now out of the UFC entirely.

‘Rocket’ is scheduled for a big fight in April, though, against former titleholder Jiri Prochazka. If he wins that one, any thought of removing him from the rankings will naturally be out of the window.

#4. Dominick Cruz – No.11-ranked UFC bantamweight (last fought August 2022)

youtube-cover

The inaugural UFC bantamweight champion, there’s probably an argument for considering Dominick Cruz the GOAT at 135 pounds. However, whether ‘The Dominator’ still belongs in the top 15 is another thing entirely.

The last time Cruz fought was in August 2022, when he suffered a devastating knockout at the hands of Marlon Vera.

Obviously, there’s no shame in anyone suffering a loss to ‘Chito’. The Ecuadorian is about to fight for the bantamweight title and is one of the most dangerous finishers on the entire UFC roster.

However, keeping an aging fighter whose last victory came way back in December 2021, particularly in one of the promotion’s most loaded weight classes, is definitely questionable.

For how much longer ‘The Dominator’ can remain ranked above the likes of Umar Nurmagomedov and Mario Bautista – both of whom are on lengthy win streaks – is up for debate.

The truth is that Cruz’s star power and decorated history are probably the only things keeping him afloat right now, but in the near future, that probably shouldn’t be enough.

#3. Brian Ortega – No.4-ranked UFC featherweight (last fought July 2022)

youtube-cover

The joint-highest ranked fighter on this list is former featherweight title contender Brian Ortega. ‘T-City’ has now been out of action for nearly 18 months, yet he remains ranked as the UFC’s No.4 featherweight.

What makes this one even more baffling is the fact that Ortega actually hasn’t won a fight since October 2020, when he outpointed ‘The Korean Zombie’. That win, remarkably, counts as his only victory since 2018, as he’s lost his other three bouts since then.

‘T-City’ is undoubtedly a talented and dangerous fighter, both on the feet and on the ground. In fact, despite his patchy recent record, he’d still probably be favoured to dispatch most of the fighters ranked around him such as Josh Emmett and Calvin Kattar.

However, the fact that he’s been on the shelf for so long and hasn’t won in well over three years definitely makes his high ranking a confusing one.

Thankfully, the Californian is set to return later this month, when he’ll face Yair Rodriguez in a rematch of his last bout, which saw him injure his shoulder and end up on the shelf in the first place.

If he wins that one, there’ll be no argument against his ranking, but if he loses, it’ll become very hard to justify it.

#2. Paulo Costa – No.6-ranked UFC middleweight (last fought August 2022)

youtube-cover

Later this month at UFC 299, Paulo Costa is finally set to make his big return. He’s scheduled to face off with former middleweight kingpin Robert Whittaker in a long-anticipated fight, and if he wins, it’s likely he’ll rise up into the division’s top three.

Right now, though, the fact that ‘The Eraser’ is still ranked at No.6 at 185 pounds is more than a little confusing.

Once considered a future titleholder, Costa burst onto the scene back in 2017 and reeled off five straight wins to set up a shot at then-champion Israel Adesanya in 2020.

Since losing that fight, though, the Brazilian has fought just twice. He lost to Marvin Vettori in October 2021 and hasn’t fought since a bizarre victory over Luke Rockhold in August 2022.

Rockhold retired and departed the UFC after that bout, meaning that every opponent who Costa has defeated inside the octagon no longer competes there.

‘The Eraser’ is undoubtedly a great fighter when he’s at his best, mixing a heavy-handed striking game with powerful takedowns and a lot of forward pressure.

However, recently he’s become equally renowned for withdrawing from fights, pulling out of no fewer than four engagements since his failed title bid.

Assuming his fight with Whittaker actually goes ahead, Costa will have an opportunity to prove his worth. If the fight ends up being postponed, though – which wouldn’t be a surprise – it’d be hard to justify him remaining in his current spot.

#1. Stipe Miocic – No.4-ranked UFC heavyweight (last fought March 2021)

youtube-cover

It’s hard to even quantify the amount of things that have changed in the world since Stipe Miocic last fought in the octagon in March 2021.

That fight, which saw him lose his UFC heavyweight title to Francis Ngannou, took place in the Las Vegas Apex with no fans thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then, we’ve seen the beginning of two major wars, two new Prime Ministers in the UK, and almost the entirety of Joe Biden’s presidency in the US.

In the UFC, meanwhile, just one champion from that time still holds their title, with many divisions seeing multiple titleholders since.

Somehow, though, Miocic remains ranked at No.4 in the heavyweight division, above the likes of Curtis Blaydes and Jailton Almeida.

Miocic is undoubtedly the most highly credentialed heavyweight in the promotion’s history, but for him to remain so highly ranked after nearly three years out is a real head-scratcher.

The reason for this, of course, is probably the continued efforts to set up the so-called ‘legacy fight’ between him and current champ Jon Jones, who hasn’t fought in nearly a year in his own right.

Despite this, the continued high ranking of a fighter like Miocic can definitely be seen as a mark against the UFC’s ranking system – and gives fuel to the argument made by interim champ Tom Aspinall that the veteran ought to step aside.

Gary O’Neil’s Wolves: Improving Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha to transform Premier League’s lowest scorers

When Wolves beat Brentford 4-1 just after Christmas, it was the first time that the club had won a game by scoring four goals in Premier League history. Just five weeks later, against Chelsea, Gary O’Neil’s team managed to do it again.

The 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge will be framed in the context of a Chelsea crisis but there is another side to the story. Wolves, the Premier League’s lowest scorers last season, are on course for their best goals-per-game record in the top division for 60 years.

Stan Cullis was the manager then. There is a statue of him at Molineux outside the stand that bears his name, honouring the man who took Wolves to three titles. Few expected much to celebrate this season let alone statistics harking back to the glory days.

The gloom that engulfed Wolves in the summer is oft-cited but worth repeating in any attempt to fairly assess what has followed. Fan favourites departed as the demands of profit-and-sustainability regulations became clear. Julen Lopetegui left in frustration.

What hope if even the manager did not believe?

O’Neil was not unaware of “how many pundits and media had written the group off and how many bottom threes we were predicted to be in” when he walked through the door just days before Wolves’ season kicked off away to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But he galvanised the group quickly, his diligence winning over the players – and then the supporters. Beating Manchester City and Tottenham created some memories. Winning away at West Bromwich Albion for the first time in 28 years helped too.

The togetherness has been striking. Relationships had to be built on the fly but thanks to hours on the training ground and the insights that have helped to improve performances, it is working. O’Neil has simply made so many of these Wolves players better.

This has been a tactical triumph. One of the key moments came in the seventh game of the season. There had been some encouraging signs in those first half a dozen Premier League games but only one had been won and none in front of their own fans.

That win over Man City had added significance because O’Neil tweaked the team’s shape, adding another defender in Toti Gomes. He has started every game since and, as of Sunday, Wolves could claim to have picked up as many points as City since that day.

It represented a return to the 3-4-3 shape that Nuno Espirito Santo had used to such good effect when taking Wolves to back-to-back seventh-place finishes. But it was more flexible. O’Neil even sees it as a back four at times. Crucially, it is much more attacking.

Consider the roles of the two midfielders. Wolves had good control with Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho, both players remaining heroes to the supporters even after leaving. But what they did not really do, particularly under Nuno, is threaten the penalty box.

In 109 appearances each in the competition under Nuno, Neves and Moutinho had 28 and 24 touches inside the penalty box, respectively. Mario Lemina, the senior man in Wolves’ current two-man midfield, has eclipsed that tally in just 20 games under O’Neil.

Wolves get players into the box now. There was no great reason to expect Lemina to be making a move beyond the last line of defence deep into stoppage time against Spurs in November. But the fact that he made that run allowed him to score the winner.

Against Chelsea, it was Rayan Ait-Nouri making a run across the front post to latch onto Pedro Neto’s cross and put Wolves in front for the first time. Players inside the box have transformed an attack that most assumed could not score the goals required.

After Wolves blanked in that opener against United despite having more shots than any away side in a Premier League game at Old Trafford in over a decade, this reporter asked O’Neil whether he really believed these players could deliver in front of goal.

“If we have 23 shots every game and still have not scored, then I will be concerned,” he replied. “At this moment, I see players of real quality, players who are capable. My job is to keep getting them to arrive. My job is to work with them on being more clinical.”

At the start of September, upon losing away to Crystal Palace, there was still more than a little scepticism when O’Neil said: “We had 60 final-third entries, which is a lot for an away game, and more than Palace.” But he was right. And the goals soon did begin to flow.

The potent trio of Matheus Cunha, Pedro Neto and Hee-Chan Hwang, currently away on Asian Cup duty with South Korea, have defied the doubters. “I would bet that all of them are pretty close to their best at the moment, returns-wise,” says O’Neil. And he is right.

This is already the best scoring season of Cunha’s career. Hwang has doubled his previous-best total in a major European league. Pedro Neto ranks third in the Premier League for assists. He has eight of them so far, despite missing two months due to injury.

The temptation when watching Wolves in full flow is to think that the three have been unleashed, talented players given the freedom to express themselves. “Sometimes the game becomes random,” says O’Neil, “and they need to figure stuff out for themselves.”

But, for the most part, the opposite is true. The improvement is a result of prescribed movements, patterns of play that had been lacking. Hwang took those instructions on board quickly. Cunha’s adaptation process took longer but has been just as spectacular.

The Brazilian was always gifted, hence Wolves parting with £43m to bring him to the club last winter. In 2019, he was nominated for the Puskas Award after a sensational solo effort for RB Leipzig against Bayer Leverkusen. A scorer of great goals but not a great goalscorer.

Speaking to O’Neil about this in December, he offered an insight into the conversations between player and coach. He had been urging Cunha to pick up the positions that produce results as well as gasps from the crowd. It was about being more effective.

“When you are a No 9, which he has had to be at times this season, we need you to do this and this, but every time the ball is crossed I need my No 9 to be a threat. You have to be. OK, Matheus Cunha does this and this really well but he has to do this. You have to.

“People actually watching the game will see that he came off the front, did a little turn, popped it to the winger. Great. But how many goals has he got? How many assists has he got? I am trying to work with him on that, which he takes exceptionally well.”

That ongoing dialogue appears to have worked. In eight appearances for Wolves in all competitions since Christmas, Cunha has provided three assists and scored six goals, culminating in his hat-trick against Chelsea. Having added goals, he now has it all.

And the football suits these Wolves players better now.

This is not a pure counter-attacking team – they rank 12th for possession. But they are in the top half for direct attacks, transitions entering the final third and drives into the box – metrics that hint at their pace. No team has completed more dribbles.

Given space in which to attack, this is a Wolves team that can be devastating. Perhaps that explains why they have won as many games against the so-called ‘big six’ teams as they have against the current bottom six teams in the Premier League table.

That challenge of breaking down deeper defences is one that Wolves will need to solve if the improvement is to continue but, speaking to O’Neil, he is aware of this. With the attention to detail that is fast becoming a feature of his coaching, expect him to find the solutions.

“We are not there yet. When Manchester City come, the question is whether you can defend well and you can attack quickly. We need to have the answer to that. You may get some who come to frustrate you a bit, so now it is not going to be on to attack quickly.

“So we need to have a good understanding and try to pick our moments. Trying to give the group enough information so that they can do whatever is put in front of them is where I try to go with it. I have not got them there yet but I will keep working on it.”

O’Neil might dispute the notion that there is an obvious first-choice starting line-up. Pablo Sarabia and Tommy Doyle, for instance, continue to make useful contributions. But the imminent prospect of reuniting Hwang with Neto and Cunha is an enticing one.

A combination of international commitments, injuries and suspensions means that the side that beat Manchester City has only been seen for 45 minutes since, in the draw with Aston Villa. If this small squad can stay fit then that 60-year goal record will be broken.

And the reputation of Gary O’Neil will continue to grow.
