The History of the Baccarat Game

In the 9th century, under the shadow of Etruscan temples, a legend was born, known today as baccarat. A priestess dressed in purple robes would cast a die, predicting fate. An 8 or 9 signified the favour of the gods, a 6 or 7 – a neutral shadow, 0-5 – a fall into the abyss.

Centuries later, in the 14th century, France breathed new life into the ancient ritual. ‘Baccarat,’ which translates from Italian as ‘zero,’ charmed the royal court. Tarot cards were replaced with playing cards, and the ritual turned into a gambling game. Baccarat captured the hearts of the nobility, becoming a symbol of luxury and excitement. Charles VIII, King of France, could not resist its allure.

From France, the game triumphantly marched across the world, conquering the casinos of Italy, Spain, Germany, and, finally, America. James Bond, an icon of gambling, immortalized baccarat in ‘Casino Royale.’ In its numerous variations, from Punto Banco to Chemin de Fer, it continues to enchant. Today, baccarat is available to everyone in online casinos. Feel like James Bond playing royally on the best and verified casino sites.

How do you play baccarat online?

When most people talk about baccarat, they’re talking about the rules of the game as they’re played in punto banco: players can bet on the player hand, banker hand, or tie. In Baccarat, imagine there are two hands competing: the player’s hand and the banker’s hand. You get to bet on which hand will win. The hand that scores closest to nine wins the round.

Betting Options for Online Baccarat

This guide to real-money Baccarat online is structured in different parts. Each covers an aspect of real-money Baccarat games that you should know before you place your virtual chips on the table.

baccarat hand banker tie

Player Hand

The player’s hand is just two cards that are dealt face up on the table. The goal is for these two cards to add up to a number as close to 9 as possible, without going over. Aces are worth 1, face cards (like King, Queen, Jack) are worth 0, and other cards are worth their number (so a 5 is worth 5).

  • If the player gets a 3 and a 7, their hand is worth 10 (because 3 + 7 = 10). That’s not ideal, but hopefully, they’ll get a good third card to get closer to 9.

That’s the basic idea of the player’s hand in Baccarat. You’re just trying to get those two cards to add up to close to 9.

Banker Hand

Betting the Banker is the most common strategy in Baccarat because the banker has slightly higher odds of winning than the Player. There are plenty of other strategies that players employ, but betting the Banker is the simplest. The ‘Banker’ in Baccarat might sound confusing, but it doesn’t actually refer to the casino or dealer. It’s simply the name of one of the two hands you can bet on, just like the ‘Player’ hand. We’ve placed a step-by-step guide on how to bet on the Banker.

  1. Find a Baccarat table at a casino or online.
  2. Look for the betting area marked “Banker” (it might be a rectangle or circle on the table).
  3. Place your chips in that area. You can bet any amount you’re comfortable with.

The dealer will deal the cards for both the Player and Banker hands.

Why is it a good option to bet on? You don’t need to know complex card rules or strategies. Just pick ‘Banker’ and hope they win.

Tie

A tie in Baccarat is like a draw in other games. It occurs when both the Player’s hand and the Banker’s hand end up with the same total value after all the cards are dealt. It’s a rare outcome in Baccarat. So, for beginners, it’s usually best to stick with betting on Player or Banker and skip the tie bet.

Our Top Tips for Winning at Live Baccarat Online

Although baccarat may appear deceptively simple at first glance, its strategic depth belies its elegant facade. By employing various baccarat strategies, you can potentially maximize your chances of winning and sway the odds in your favour.

  • Firstly, avoid betting on every hand. Instead, observe the outcomes of previous hands and place your bets when a particular side seems to be on a winning streak or when one side hasn’t won for a while.
  • More often, Banker’s box receives extra cards, slightly increasing its chances of winning. Therefore, it’s advisable not to bet against a side that is on a winning streak.
  • The game’s odds vary depending on the number of decks used. For instance, in a shoe with eight decks, the house edge for bets on the Player is 1.06%, on the Banker is 1.24%, and for a Tie, it stands at 14.36%. With a single deck, the house advantage changes to 1.29% for the Banker, 1.01% for the Player, and 15.57% for a Tie. For a six-deck shoe, the percentages slightly adjust to 1.06% for the Player, 1.24% for the Banker, and 14.44% for a Tie.
  • Try to keep track of the totals in each hand and adjust your bets based on whether you think the next cards will be high or low. Once all cards in the shoe have been played, you’ll notice that both the Player and Banker win about 50% of the time, reflecting the game’s essentially random nature.

Online Baccarat Tips south korea

The 1-3-2-4 system

For fans of baccarat, the 1-3-2-4 betting system increases enjoyment by motivating you to increase your bets following each victory. Take a hit or stumble? Feel free to return to your initial bet. This baccarat strategy relies on a precise betting pattern determined by the results of prior hands.

  • Win: Maintain your bet for the next hand (1 unit).
  • Loss: Increase your bet by 1 unit for the next hand (2 units).
  • Second Loss: Increase your bet by 2 units for the next hand (4 units).
  • Win after two losses: Reset your bet to 1 unit.

This tactic depends on finally winning after a run of losses in order to make up for all of the lost money and make a profit. By gradually raising bets on losses to make up for prior losses and even make a profit, it seeks to benefit from winning streaks.

The one-sided baccarat betting strategy

The One-Sided Baccarat Betting Strategy is all about simplicity and waiting for a hot hand. You pick Banker or Player at the shoe’s beginning and stick with it. The idea is that one hand will eventually go on a winning streak, and by consistently betting on it, you can potentially maximize your gains.

It prioritizes simplicity and patience. Here’s the core idea:

  • Choose a Side: At the beginning of the shoe (deck or set of shoes used), pick either the Banker or Player bet and stick with it for the entire duration.
  • Riding the Streak: The underlying concept is that one hand, either Banker or Player, will eventually experience a winning streak. By consistently betting on the chosen side, you aim to capitalize on this potential streak.

While easier to use than complex strategies, it requires patience as waiting for a streak can be long, ignores the possibility of alternating wins, and offers no guarantee of victory. You might end up enduring long losing runs on your chosen side, jeopardizing your bankroll.

The Martingale strategy

The Martingale Strategy is a high-risk approach that thrives on aggression. You start with a predetermined base bet and double it after every loss. The idea is that a single win will recoup all your losses and potentially turn a profit based on your initial bet.

  • Start with a Base Bet: Determine a comfortable starting bet amount based on your bankroll limitations.
  • Double After Losses: If you lose a bet, double your bet amount for the next round.
  • Win Recovery: The goal is to win a single bet to recover all previous losses and potentially make a profit based on your original base bet amount.
  • Reset After Wins: After a win, reset your bet amount back to the original base unit.

While theoretically appealing, the drawbacks are severe. This strategy is incredibly risky, especially at high betting limits. A single extended losing streak can wipe out your entire bankroll. Due to the high potential for devastating losses, even with just a few consecutive defeats, the Martingale Strategy is not recommended for most players.

Selecting Your Ideal Platform: A Guide for South Korean Players

  1. Licensing and regulation: Look for the fact that the platform is licensed by a proper gambling commission, which could guarantee protection and, what is the most important thing, fair play of the players.
  2. Game Variety: Select a casino that provides a selection of live baccarat tables, from low limits to high limits. We recommend paying special attention to the M88 with its rich variety of games to play baccarat online.
  3. Live Dealers: Opting for a casino with live dealers is an excellent option since it creates the sense that you are in a physical casino. All of the above-mentioned betting baccarat sites are run by professionals. Therefore, we recommend that you review the list of selected game variants before proceeding.
  4. Bonuses and Promos: Find out who’s offering the best welcome bonus, current and long-term promotions, and what rewards regular players can expect.

Where can I find the best live dealer baccarat casino?

In our curated list of baccarat casinos, you can choose the one that puts an emphasis on South Korean players. You should look for these criteria:

  • Korean Language assistance: To make it friendlier, use the platform with an interface and customer service in the Korean language. That will ease the interaction process so you can easily address or solve a problem when it arises.
  • Korean Won (KRW) Currency: Please select the online baccarat casinos that let you use Korean Won-friendly currencies to avoid payment for any currency change and fees at the time of depositing and withdrawing.
  • Payment Options Popular in South Korea: For hassle-free and secure deposits, you can choose from live dealer baccarat accepting a few of the common methods of payment in South Korea, such as credit cards, e-wallets, and local bank transfers.

How does Live Baccarat compare to other live dealer casino games?

It’s easy to learn and play baccarat. Compared to online blackjack, you won’t have to make any hard decisions. However, certain rules apply depending on the Player’s Score.

Can you count cards in baccarat?

It’s difficult to count cards in a free baccarat game online. The computer uses a random number generator to shuffle the cards, making card counting nearly impossible. Though traditional card counting isn’t viable, some Baccarat strategies focus on tracking patterns in Banker and Player wins. However, the effectiveness of these methods is debatable, and the house edge in Baccarat remains relatively low compared to other casino games.

Can I try live baccarat for free first?

Alongside the free baccarat games on this page, many of the top casino sites will allow you to use their games in demo mode, effectively offering players a baccarat simulator that doesn’t cost a dime. Free baccarat is a great way to get a feel for the rules of the game if you want to practice or aren’t ready to use real money.

Conclusion on Baccarat Casinos in South Korea

South Korea is where fans are going to be able to find the best variations of baccarat on our well-reviewed site designed with bettors in mind. Baccarat FAQs

Do casinos make money on baccarat?

Yes, they do. Casinos have a built-in advantage known as the house edge. Odds are ever so slightly in their favour, regardless of which hand (Player or Banker) wins. Even though Banker bets have a higher chance of winning, the casino takes a small commission on those wins. This, along with the house edge itself, ensures the casino profits over time. So, enjoy the thrill of Baccarat, but gamble responsibly, knowing the odds are slightly stacked in the house’s favour.

What does baccarat mean?

Some say it came from French, while others claim it came from Italian and means ‘zero’. This might be related to the goal of achieving a hand value near to nine, as 10 (or anything more) decreases to zero. It’s also possible that it derives from an old Italian term meaning chance or luck.

Is baccarat easy to learn?

Baccarat is widely recognised as one of the simplest casino card games. There are just three betting options: player, banker, and tie. You predict which hand (Player or Banker) will have a total closest to nine.

Is baccarat a game of skill or luck?

You need to be lucky to win at live dealer baccarat online. No skill will give you an edge against the house, but the best way to maximize your odds is to learn the rules and follow a basic strategy where you have the option.

Manchester City’s Kyle Walker praises referee Michael Oliver for his handling of the incident involving Jeremy Doku. Walker was speaking at the launch of his KW2 Academy in partnership with Sheffield College

Howard Webb: “This one has split opinion. I think it’s one where had the referee given it on the field, it would have been ‘check complete’ by the VAR.

“But having not given it, it is also ‘check complete’. You can hear Michael Oliver say that the ball is in between. The ball is too low to head… Doku lifts his foot to play the ball and he does make contact on the ball.

“We know there is some contact on Mac Allister as well so he’s not really playing the ball either.

“I think it would have been ‘check complete’ either way as he doesn’t want to be re-refereeing the game in situations that are not really clear.

“In this situation, the VAR stays out of it and I think that’s what we would expect.

“It’s a massive game, so as a referee, you just want clarity and certainty that you’re making the right decision. You don’t always have sufficient information that you’re making the right decision. You need that on big moments in and around the penalty area.

“You do everything you can to be in the right position. Michael didn’t have certainty in this situation but VAR didn’t have any clear and obvious evidence to overturn the on-field decision. It’s subjective and so stays out of it. VAR followed the right course in not getting involved.”

Listen to the VAR checks that disallowed a goal for handball in West Ham’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in the Premier League, a call that PGMOL chief Howard Webb described as very complicated

In West Ham’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, it took five-and-a-half minutes to clear up whether the hosts had scored a late winner.

Tomas Soucek thought he had won it for the Hammers in the dying stages of added time, after getting on the end of James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick.

But it was ruled out for handball after a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check.

Howard Webb: “It was quite a complicated sequence as there was quite a lot going on. We see the free-kick coming in and we know there is a possible offside.

“There’s also a couple of potential handball offences. There’s one by Tomas Soucek and we know the ball definitely comes off Soucek’s hand.

“But he’s not the goalscorer as the ball then hits Jarrod Bowen on the ground. We see and hear the VAR and AVAR going through the sequence.

“They’re trying to find the most definitive aspect of it. They’re looking at whether it hits Jarrod’s arm on the floor. If it does, then we know that the goal can’t stand.

“We know that if the ball hits the scorer’s arm – even if it is accidental – then the goal has to be disallowed. They’re looking at the goal from different angles to see if the ball hits Bowen’s arm.

“I suspect it hits his left arm but we can’t quite get the definitive angle. So they go back to Soucek to see if it comes off his arm – but for Soucek, it has to be a deliberate handball offence or he has made himself bigger in some way.

“It did take quite a bit of time. Soucek turns his body to knock it onto Bowen so it is a handball. It’s an example of how complicated these sequences can be.”

PGMOL chief Howard Webb joins Michael Owen on Match Officials Mic’d Up to discuss why Aston Villa were denied a penalty after the ball struck the arm of West Ham defender Emerson Palmieri in the box

PGMOL chief Howard Webb joins Michael Owen on Match Officials Mic’d Up to discuss John McGinn’s red card for a forceful kick at Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie in Aston Villa’s 4-0 defeat

During Aston Villa’s 4-0 home defeat by Tottenham, John McGinn was dismissed for a reckless tackle on visiting left-back Destiny Udogie in the 65th minute.

Referee Chris Kavanagh did not require a VAR review and decided to dismiss the Villa captain after witnessing the tackle.

Howard Webb: “When we try to identify a red card offence, we look at whether a player leaves the ground, does he lunge in two-footed or with a straight leg, does he go over the foot with the studs.

“It doesn’t happen in this situation, but what we do see is John McGinn take a really strong kicking action into the opponent. The law only asks us to identify whether the action has excessive force or brutality.

“This one, I think, clearly does and the officials did as well. The Tottenham players didn’t react to the officials in this case – they went straight to John McGinn.

“They’re not trying to influence the referee into showing a red card. They’re identifying that it’s a brutal action from McGinn.”

In full: Webb’s analysis of Josh Brownhill’s red card vs Crystal Palace

During Crystal Palace’s 3-0 win over Burnley last month, the game’s turning point came in the first half when midfielder Josh Brownhill was sent off.

The Eagles dominated possession in the opening period but could not find a breakthrough before Brownhill was shown a straight red card.

James Trafford played a ball to Brownhill, who was under pressure from Jefferson Lerma, and he brought down the midfielder when he was through on goal.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb explains the meaning of ‘DOGSO’: denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and why it led to Josh Brownhill receiving a red card for Burnley at Crystal Palace

Howard Webb: “This one is a pretty clear situation. DOGSO stands for ‘Denial of an obvious Goalscoring Opportunity’. When we analyse this, we look at four elements: was the play moving towards goal? What was the distance from goal? Did the attacking player have possession and control of the ball? And finally, what is the location of the other defenders?

“Could they interject to prevent that attack? In this situation, we see that all four elements are present and therefore when the foul happens, it’s denying a clear goalscoring opportunity and therefore a red card comes.

“In this situation, there’s a clear shirt pull by Brownhill – but it doesn’t matter that it was deliberate or whether there was an attempt to play the ball. As it’s outside the penalty area so it’s always a red card. If we move it into the area, then it wouldn’t be a red card if Brownhill was making a genuine attempt to play the ball.

“It would be a yellow card, but if it is a cynical shirt pull as it is in this case, it would still have to be a red. It’s a good decision from the officials.”

Speaking on Match Officials Mic’d Up, PGMOL chief Howard Webb explains why the decision to clear Burnley’s Sander Berge of handball only took the VAR a few seconds to make against West Ham

Flyers captain Sean Couturier to be healthy scratch vs. Maple Leafs

Philadelphia Flyers captain Sean Couturier is expected to be a healthy scratch against the Toronto Maple Leafs, he confirmed to Charlie O’Connor of PHLY Sports on Tuesday.

“Control what I can control, it is what it is,” Couturier told O’Connor.

Head coach John Tortorella has been critical of his captain of late, going so far as to bench him in the team’s 6-5 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday. Couturier finished the game with only 11:10 of ice time, way down from his usual 18:36.

“A number of players, Sean Couturier being one, need to play better,” Tortorella said after practice on Monday.

Couturier has 11 goals and 36 points this season, but has picked up only one point in his last nine games. His last goal came on Feb. 10 against the Seattle Kraken.

The 31-year-old missed most of the 2021-22 season and the entirety of the 2022-23 season while dealing with a back injury.

He was named the Flyers’ captain on Feb. 14.

The Flyers are 34-26-8 and sit in third in the Metropolitan Division. They’re 4-5-1 in their last 10 and are in the midst of a two-game losing streak.

British and Irish Lions 2025: Which Six Nations stars would make the Lions right now?

While the British and Irish Lions Tour to Australia might be over a year away, with the Six Nations wrapping up, there is never a more opportune moment to look at who the star performers could be.

Sky Sports will exclusively show the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia, with all three Tests and six warm-up matches to be shown live.

The agreement sees Sky Sports broadcast its eighth consecutive Lions Tour, with the partnership starting in 1997 with the iconic 2-1 series win over South Africa.

So, if Lions head coach Andy Farrell was picking his team right now, who would be on the plane to Australia?

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Andy Farrell says he is very honoured to have been confirmed as the British and Irish Lions head coach for their 2025 tour to Australia.

Here are three picks from each nation…

England:

Ellis Genge

Ellis Genge
Image:
Ellis Genge put in some big performances in the Six Nations

Age: 29

Position: Prop

Lions Tours: 0

Ellis Genge progressively got better throughout the Six Nations and it culminated in a brilliant scrummaging performance against France’s Uini Atonio.

Atonio has six, yes six, stone on Genge but the England man worked hard, got low, and showed what an asset he can be in that front row.

He is also a leader in the England camp and a voice like that will be essential for life on Tour.

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso

Feyi-Waboso
Image:
Immanuel Feyi-Waboso marked himself as a danger man against Ireland

Age: 21

Position: Wing. Centre

Lions Tours: 0

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso made quite the impression in the few games he played for England, his start against Ireland cementing him as a real future star.

Ireland could not figure out how to stop his combination of power and pace and if he can continue to grow in the England shirt, he will be a certain name on Farrell’s list for 2025.

Ollie Lawrence

England's Ollie Lawrence (centre) is tackled by France's Thomas Ramos (left) during the Guinness Six Nations match at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, France. Picture date: Saturday March 16, 2024.
Image:
Ollie Lawrence proved a hard man to stop in the Six Nations

Age: 24

Position: Centre

Lions Tours: 0

Another man who had a tournament to remember, when Ollie Lawrence came back into the England side, he showed why he is lethal in that centre position.

He can play any role required – if you need him running hard lines he will, but if you need him using his brute strength to power up the field, he will also do that in abundance.

If he is partnered with a certain Ireland centre, it could be a sensational combination.

Ireland:

Jamie Gibson-Park

Ireland's scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park
Image:
Ireland’s scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park is the most consistent man available

Age: 32

Position: Scrum-half

Lions Tours: 0

Ultimately, Jamie Gibson-Park is the best scrum-half out there for the Lions at the moment.

His consistency for Ireland is second to none, and his kicking game and match awareness have been integral to the Ireland system that has seen them dominate so much.

A calm head is always needed in such a vital role and Gibson-Park can fulfil that for Farrell.

Bundee Aki

Ireland Six Nations
Image:
Bundee Aki’s strength in the centres will be huge for the Lions

Age: 33

Position: Centre

Lions Tours: 1 (2021)

Why wouldn’t you put this guy on the plane? His sensational World Cup performance plus his performance at the Six Nations would have Bundee Aki down as a dead cert starter for the Lions at the moment.

His ability to make metres is not matched by any worldwide and he will be a lot for Australia to handle.

It could also be exciting to see him partner someone like Lawrence who also has power and pace.

Jack Crowley

Crowley

Jack Crowley semalessly fit into the Ireland side

Age: 24

Position: Fly-half

Lions Tours: 0

A reward for a seamless transition, Jack Crowley can be a solid fly-half option for the Lions.

He has an old head on young shoulders and is never fazed when he makes a mistake, plus he can kick goals like the best of them.

Not many could step into Johnny Sexton’s shoes and perform and he did that brilliantly for Ireland.

Scotland:

Finn Russell

Scotland’s Finn Russell could be an experienced head in the dressing room

Age: 31

Position: Fly-half

Lions Tours: 1 (2021)

Finn Russell will always bring that flair and you know on a Lions Tour he would enjoy himself creatively on the pitch.

Right now, he is probably the most experienced and in-form fly-half option for the Lions and combined with some other big stars, we could see some Russell flair on show.

He also is a sensational goal kicker and that will be vital for Farrell’s side.

Duhan Van der Merwe’s individual skill could be a sight to watch for the Lions

Age: 28

Position: Wing

Lions Tours: 1 (2021)

A man who can create something spectacular all on his own, Duhan Van der Merwe showed why his pace and power on the wing is pretty much unmatched.

There are not many as big as him who can show individual finesse like he does and he already has a solid understanding with Russell that could serve the Lions well in 2025.

Zander Fagerson

Scotland’s Zander Fagerson would be a useful option on the bench

Age: 28

Position: Prop

Lions Tours: 1 (2021)

Fagerson is one of the few players in these picks who went on the 2021 Lions Tour. However, he did not play.

The Glasgow Warriors prop has battled against the best of them and could be a solid option off the bench when that front row needs a new breath of life.

Wales:

Mason Grady

Age: 21

Position: Centre, Wing

Lions Tours: 0

Mason Grady didn’t get a whole host of minutes across the Six Nations, but when he did grace the field, Grady sparkled.

Scoring in the dying moments of their clash vs Italy, Grady showed that he offers something different with his dazzling footwork and could be someone that Farrell could take on Tour as the Lions look to the future.

Age: 21

Position: Lock

The one thing a young captain needs is experience and quickly and a Lions Tour could offer the perfect environment for Wales skipper Dafydd Jenkins to grow.

It would be a vital opportunity for him to use his own voice but learn from other huge leaders across the nations as Wales continue their rebuilding journey.

Aaron Wainwright

Age: 26

Position: No 8, Flanker

Lions Tours: 0

Aaron Wainwright was one of Wales’ standout players in the Six Nations, making metres like no other in that Wales jersey.

His energy was electric and his enthusiasm even when under the pump could be a key asset for the Lions.

The fifth nation: The exiles available

Owen Farrell

Former England head coach Stuart Lancaster says Owen Farrell is excited by his new challenge in France having joined his old coach at Racing 92.

Age: 32

Position: Fly-half, Centre

Lions Tours: 3

Although the former England captain may be out of contention for international selection with his move to Racing 92 imminent, he can very much still be picked for the Lions Tour.

As England’s top points scorer ever and with three Tours under his belt, his experience could be invaluable and what a storyline it would be to see father and son in action.

Courtney Lawes

England’s Courtney Lawes says despite his retirement from International rugby, he would answer the call-up for one final Lions tour.

Age: 35

Position: Lock, Flanker

Lions Tours: 2

Lawes retired from international duty after the 2023 Rugby World Cup,but he made sure to make clear that he still sees starring for the Lions in his future.

With a year out in France to come, Lawes could earn himself a shirt and when someone with 105 caps comes knocking, it is hard to turn them down.

Henry Arundell

Henry Arundell
Image:
Henry Arundell will be one player that Andy Farrell will keep a close eye on at Racing 92

Age: 21

Position: Full-back, wing

Lions Tours: 0

Henry Arundell was originally given a special exemption to represent England after London Irish went into administration, but after making his move to Racing 92 permanent, Arundell has locked his door to international duty for now.

However, Arundell has been a constant star and his pace at the back could be huge for the Lions if they come calling.

He knows how to score tries and in a Lions shirt, he could thrive.

How can Oilers reverse fortunes against Avalanche?

EDMONTON — As the Edmonton Oilers players walked towards the family lounge, where their loved ones awaited them after that razor-thin loss to Colorado on Saturday, they stepped to the right as the dollies carrying the Montreal Canadiens’ equipment rolled past on the left.

It was a metaphor for the seven-month grind that constitutes a National Hockey League season: You’d better be able to move on from one game or opponent, because the next one is just around the corner — sometimes even arriving at your rink before the last one has even departed.

But with a pair of NHL minnows — the 26th-place Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres (23rd) — on the Oilers’ schedule this week, this city has not moved on. Not at all.

On Monday the topic was still fresh, after that 3-2 overtime loss to the Avalanche.

Why doesn’t Edmonton win that game? At this stage of their arc, why do they still lose it?

“I’ve only been here for one game against (Colorado), so I don’t really know the whole backstory,” began Corey Perry, a new-ish Oiler who certainly knows a thing or two about winning. “But you can see these teams have played against each other many times, and you can see that we have that next gear to get to.

“It’s right there, and once we find it, that’s going to take over for us.”

});
});

That “gear” isn’t what you might think it is, however.

“In a series you’re going to need that momentum shift, whatever it is,” explained Perry. “It could come from anything: a hit can, a goal. It can be a big blocked shot or a save — whatever. There’s a momentum shift at some point in the series that, hopefully, goes in your favour. That’s where I think we could really look at that game and pick it apart.”

In a game played at lightning pace, Edmonton trailed 1-0 after 40 minutes, had a third-period goal called back, and still managed to hold a 2-1 lead with six minutes to play. That the lead got away — and the Avs scored at 4:59 of the overtime session to snag the second point — was more vexing than downright concerning.

It was the fifth consecutive overtime game between Colorado and Edmonton, which tells us there isn’t much to choose between the two. But Edmonton has won only one of those games, and folks around here are wondering when the time arrives that the Oilers stop simply playing with the big boys, and actually start beating them.

“You’ve got to beat them. That’s the only way,” said Connor McDavid. “They’ve been tight-checking games. They’ve been close games. Five consecutive overtime games …

“It was a good game, a playoff-like game. Tight checking. I thought we did a good job of wrestling a lead, up 2-1 with five minutes left. You’ve got to find a way to close it out, and obviously we didn’t do that,” he said. “We look back at that (2022 Western Conference Final), and they win. It’s a sweep and they go on to win the Cup.”

It’s pretty simple math, once McDavid lays it out:

“If you want to be considered better than them, you’ve got to beat them. That’s just the way it is.”

In the latest instalment of Edmonton-Colorado, the goaltending was a wash. Stuart Skinner (who stopped a Jonathan Drouin penalty shot when it was scoreless) was as good as Alexandar Georgiev, who stopped a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins breakaway in OT.

The stars cancelled each other out, with none of McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Cale Makar or Nathan MacKinnon notching a single point until the OT winner at the 64:59 mark of the evening. The Avalanche depth forwards appear to have more speed, though they were outscored 2-0 by Edmonton’s depth forwards, with 4C Sam Carrick scoring the 2-1 goal and Warren Foegele opening the scoring for the Oilers.

Meanwhile, Colorado defenceman Sean Walker had the first two-goal game of his career to account for the Avs scoring, a depth feature that can not be overlooked.

What did Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch see?

“Our defensive-zone coverage can be still a little bit tighter, something that’s always going to be an emphasis. And the other one was, we didn’t have as much time in the offensive zone — just because I don’t think we’ve broken the puck out as well,” he observed.

“They had a lot of hard forechecks, and they are disciplined with their systems. But if we cleaned that up and get out of our zone a little bit cleaner, it’ll help our defensive play because we won’t be spend as much time there.”

Each of Zach Hyman, Cody Ceci and McDavid had a shot at clearing the zone on Colorado’s tying goal late in the third, a sequence that the coach is referencing here.

But if you think the Avalanche didn’t botch a clear or two, you weren’t watching.

Whatever it is that the Oilers have yet to overcome to be a Stanley Cup winner — and not just a contender — it is measured with ruler, not a tape measure.

But whatever that intangible is, it’s like a secret key in a video game.

You won’t get to where you’re going if you don’t find it, whatever it is.

Wembanyama added seven assists and seven blocks while collecting his 36th double-double in 60 games. The 7-foot-4 rookie center has five games of at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and five assists.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Damian Lillard had 31 points and 16 assists and Bobby Portis had 31 points and 10 rebounds to lead Milwaukee past the Phoenix Suns 140-129 on Sunday, as the Bucks hit 24 3-pointers to win without star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Antetokounmpo, averaging 30.8 points and 11.2 rebounds, was out with left hamstring soreness. He missed just his fourth game of the season and first since March 4, when he was out with Achilles tendinitis.

Phoenix trailed 109-94 after three quarters, but closed within 122-115 on a lay-in by Bradley Beal with 6:17 left. Lillard’s 3-pointer from the top left put Milwaukee up 134-120 with 3:18 remaining.

Khris Middleton added 22 points for Milwaukee in his first game back after missing 16 games with a sprained left ankle. The Bucks finished 24 of 41 from 3-point range, with Portis and Malik Beasley hitting five apiece.

Beal had 28 points, Grayson Allen had 25 points and Devin Booker scored 23 for Phoenix.

DALLAS (AP) — Kyrie Irving hit a running left-handed shot at the buzzer, capping a wild final 26 seconds and giving Dallas a victory over Denver.

The Nuggets rallied from 13 points down midway through the fourth quarter and went ahead on Jamal Murray’s tiebreaking 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining.

Luka Doncic answered almost immediately on the inbounds pass after a timeout, hitting from several feet behind the arc for a 105-105 tie.

After Murray missed an elbow jumper in the final seconds, Dallas called timeout. The right-handed Irving took the inbounds pass, dribbled with his left hand as Nikola Jokic pursued and hit the shot from about 20 feet.

Denver had a five-game road winning streak stopped. The Nuggets had won all five by double digits, a first in franchise history.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sam Hauser had career highs of 30 points and 10 3-pointers to help the short-handed Boston Celetics beat Washington.

Jayson Tatum also scored 30 points with six 3-pointers as the NBA-leading Celtics hit 24 shots from beyond the arc in a game in which they never trailed despite missing three starters.

In the first of back-to-back games — with a game against Detroit on Monday — Derrick White (left hand sprain) and Jaylen Brown (right ankle sprain) joined Kristaps Porzingis (right hamstring strain) among the ranks of injured Boston players.

Tatum also has been questionable with an ankle issue entering Wednesday. Instead, he played his 31st consecutive game and Hauser made his 16th career start to power Boston to 81 points before halftime and a lead that reached 36 points in the third quarter.

Hauser shot 10 for 13 from long distance and Boston went 17 for 28 from 3-point range in the first half. The Celtics shot 48% from beyond the arc despite removing their starters midway through the third quarter.

DETROIT (AP) — Bam Adebayo made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Miami to a win over Detroit.

Cade Cunningham missed a 3-pointer for Detroit with 9 seconds left and Terry Rozier sprinted up the court with the rebound. He couldn’t get to the basket, so he tossed the ball to Adebayo, who made his third 3-pointer in the last three games.

Duncan Robinson scored a season-high 30 points for Miami on 10-for-15 shooting. Adebayo had 20 points and 17 rebounds as the Heat beat the Pistons for the second time in three days.

Robinson hit his 1,000th career 3-pointer in the first quarter. He reached the mark in 343 games, breaking the NBA record of 350 by Buddy Hield.
