Canadiens’ Hughes makes right calls ahead of deadline, must remain on point

BROSSARD, Que. — This game is all about timing, and Kent Hughes played it with the precision of a Swiss watch.

That’s why the Montreal Canadiens general manager gained more than he lost ahead of this year’s trade deadline.

Hughes jumped into the action early, moving centre Sean Monahan more than five weeks ahead of Friday’s 3 p.m. ET. deadline, and getting a 2024 first-round pick and a 2027 conditional third-round pick from the Winnipeg Jets in return. He didn’t retain a penny of Monahan’s expiring $1.95-million contract to do it. And considering how the market shifted over the last week, with rental forwards of equal or better value than Monahan netting arguably worse returns, the deal that looked good back then ended up looking even better on Friday.

Had one been on the table for Jake Allen sooner, perhaps it would’ve looked as good as the one Hughes ultimately consummated with the New Jersey to trade the goaltender with a little less than 30 minutes to go to the deadline.

But it’s hard to imagine he’d have done better than getting a 2025 third-round pick (which turns into a second-rounder if Allen appears in 40 games next season and the Devils make the 2025 playoffs) for retaining 50 per cent of the 34-year-old’s $3.875-million annual salary through the end of next season. Especially with Allen’s numbers cratering below any he had posted over his previous 10 years in the league.

The deal also allowed Hughes to clear a body out of the Canadiens’ overcrowded crease with 19 games to play, and that was another gain here.

“We traded two really, really good human beings, two great professionals,” Hughes said of Monahan and Allen, and there was no denying it.

Both players were consummate workers who sheltered and seasoned younger teammates in their time spent with the organization, and the GM couldn’t — and wouldn’t — downplay that.

But it’s not as if the mark those players left washed away with their departure.

And once both were gone for solid returns that surely brightened the Canadiens’ future, other key veterans were left in their place to reinforce their imprint.

David Savard, the right-handed defenceman Hughes refused to give up for anything short of a very substantial return, is one such player. His stamp has been even bigger than the one his six-foot-one, 238-pound frame could physically leave on a blue line icing up to four players a night in possession of less experience combined than he’s accrued over his 13 seasons in the league.

Hughes could’ve lowered his market price on Savard a smidge and probably still recouped a better deal at this point than he likely will in the future if he decides to move the 33-year-old before his $3.5-million salary expires in the summer of 2025, but that wouldn’t have been a better proposition for the Canadiens.

“I guess I look at it like this: We talk about this balance, and not everything that we do can be strictly based on maximizing asset value,” Hughes said. “If we look at every player individually and I say, ‘If I trade him at this point in time, we get the best return for that player,’ we have to balance that with other things.”

“I think if we’re efficient in terms of how we manage our assets, we put ourselves in a better position to build a hockey team,”  Hughes added. “But ultimately what we’re doing is we’re trying to build a hockey team, and if a player has value to us in terms of what we’re trying to build in terms of being physically present and part of our organization, then that’s going to trump trading that player at a later point for something a little bit inferior. Because there’s value in his time with us that we’re going to carry beyond his time with us, and that’s certainly something that we were considering in the case of David.”

Simply put, Savard was more valuable to the Canadiens than he was to any other team ahead of the trade deadline, and he will likely continue to be more valuable to them beyond this season — in his own zone, on the penalty kill, and certainly filling the void Monahan and Allen left in the room and on the bench.

Tanner Pearson, a Stanley Cup-winning veteran like Savard, also remains.

There wasn’t a market for him without the Canadiens being able to retain money on his expiring $3.25-million salary, but that’s hardly a penalty for them.

Pearson’s place on the roster helps the Canadiens avoid raiding the Laval Rocket during their push to make the AHL playoffs, and it may even help them give Laval more help in the end, with Joshua Roy being able to possibly join the fight down the line without leaving the Canadiens short.

We’d not even be talking about Pearson had Hughes not taken advantage of good timing to acquire a third-round pick from the Canucks in the summer trade that sent Pearson to Montreal and Casey DeSmith to Vancouver.

It’s been a strength of his, serving him well since becoming Canadiens general manager in 2022.

That must continue to be the case for Hughes to get this team where it aims to go in short order, which is out of the NHL’s basement by next season and hopefully into its penthouse by fall of 2025.

“I look forward to the day that we’re buying, not selling,” Hughes said. “I’m as competitive as the next person, I want to feel the highs and lows of winning and losing that come when you’re expected to compete for a Stanley Cup. So, the faster that it could happen, the better off it is.

“I’d like to be around for it, but I don’t want to do it at the expense of doing it the right way, and I think that’s how we all feel as a management group and as an organization.”

It was apparent in both the moves that were and weren’t made by Hughes ahead of the deadline.

Why Ollie Watkins’ movement is his secret weapon, how Joe Gomez snubbed Man City for Liverpool – The Radar

Watkins’ movement key to his success

Thierry Henry gave a fascinating analysis of Ollie Watkins’ goals in Aston Villa’s win over Luton on Monday Night Football. The first, a towering header from a corner, was “Didier Drogba-like”. The second? Even better. “There is nobody who can stop that,” he said.

With 16 goals for the season in the Premier League, Watkins has surpassed his total for the whole of last term with two months to spare. But it is not just a case of sharpened finishing.

Defender Pau Torres was eager to get that message across when asked what has impressed him most about Watkins during a recent interview at Aston Villa’s Bodymoor Heath headquarters.

Watch all of Ollie Watkin’s Premier League goals and assists so far this season

“I think he is a player who is constantly improving,” Torres said to Sky Sports. “First of all, he makes very good runs which make it easier for the players whose job it is to find him.”

Watkins has emerged as a creator as well as a scorer. He has 10 assists in addition to his goals. But it was telling that Torres started by highlighting the quality of his movement.

It is his biggest strength.

His second goal against Luton, when he timed his run perfectly to latch onto Douglas Luiz’s free-kick, was one of nine this season – more than half his Premier League total – which has come as a result of his movement putting him one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

The runs which lead to goals are the ones that stick in the memory. But Watkins makes dozens like them in every game. According to data from Second Spectrum, he ranks top among all Premier League players this season for both high-speed runs and attacking runs.

Image:
Second Spectrum data highlights Ollie Watkins’ off-the-ball prowess

Drilling down further into the numbers tells us more. Remarkably, Watkins’ total of 444 runs challenging the opposition’s backline is more than 30 per cent higher than any other player’s. The 28-year-old also sits top of the pile for runs targeted by passes, on 349.

That final statistic backs up Torres’ assertion that Watkins’ movement makes it easier for his team-mates to pick him out. But Unai Emery deserves credit too. He has made crucial adjustments to the striker’s role over the course of his time as Aston Villa boss.

The first was to get him playing closer to goal.

With 179 touches in the opposition box this season, Watkins has already beaten his total for the whole of the last campaign (175), climbing from 11th to third among Premier League players.

Image:

Watkins is having more shots and creating more chances as a result, his threat transformed. It helps, too, that efforts are being made to conserve his energy during games.

Watkins boasts a formidable work-rate. But part of the reason he is now able to produce such an impressive volume of attacking runs is that he is no longer being asked to press as much.

According to Opta, the number of pressures he is registering has dropped in each of the last two seasons. He is now better able to channel his efforts into the business of scoring and creating.

Arguably most impressive of all, though, despite this change of emphasis, is that Watkins is still finding time to fulfil one of his other great strengths, which is dropping back to link the play.

Indeed, as well as making all those runs challenging the opposition’s backline, Watkins ranks second in the Premier League for hold-ups. Only two other strikers, Dominic Solanke and Erling Haaland, rank in the top 10 in both categories, never mind the top two.

“He is not just a penalty-box player,” added Torres. “He is involved a lot in the construction of attacks. He knows when to come and receive passes, how to generate spaces. He is a fantastic striker.”

There can be no disputing that description. The only question is whether Torres could have gone further. With his goals, his assists, and the quality of movement underpinning it all, Watkins – surely a shoo-in for England’s Euros squad – deserves to be considered among the elite.

Gomez preferred Liverpool to Man City

Had a teenaged Joe Gomez decided differently, he might be turning out for title rivals Manchester City rather than Liverpool in Sunday’s game at Anfield, live on Sky Sports.

The decision in question was made in January of 2015, six months into an outstanding breakthrough season with Charlton Athletic in the Championship. City’s interest had been piqued. The option was there. But the young defender resolved it was in his best interests to finish the campaign with his boyhood club before reassessing his options in the summer.

Speaking to former striker Jason Euell soon after his subsequent move to Liverpool – the former striker served as his mentor while a youth coach at Charlton – shed light on the episode and offered an insight into the grounded personality behind the player.

Joe Gomez has impressed for Liverpool in recent months
Image:
Joe Gomez has impressed for Liverpool in recent months

“He knew he was an asset and the club would probably sell him, but he was saying he didn’t want to go to a bigger club after half a season in the Championship and play in their U23s,” Euell told Sky Sports. “He felt that wasn’t going to help him. He was in a good place playing men’s football, so why change?

“The move didn’t go through in January in the end, so when he did go to Liverpool in the summer, it went how he had wanted. That’s Joe. He was always very thoughtful in terms of his career and what he wanted to do. He was never trying to get ahead of himself.”

Gomez felt Liverpool offered a clearer first-team pathway and so it proved. At only 18, he was thrust straight into the side, starting the first six consecutive games of the 2015/16 season before suffering the misfortune of a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Injuries would become an unwanted theme of his Liverpool career. But the maturity and strength of character first demonstrated as a teenager at Charlton helped him through the difficult periods. Now, still only 26, he looks as important to the side as ever.

His humility can be seen in his willingness to play in different roles. This season, the centre-back has only started one Premier League game in his natural position, instead helping Jurgen Klopp cope with injuries by filling in at right-back, left-back and even in midfield.

Others have grabbed the headlines. But few players can claim to have made bigger contributions in helping Liverpool remain on track in recent months. They have won 13 of the last 15 games he has started. His quality, both on and off the ball, has shone through.

He will hope to show it again when Manchester City visit Anfield on Sunday. Nine years on, he can face the side he snubbed with no thought of what might have been. “What a wonderful player he is,” said Klopp earlier this week. “I am so happy he can show that again.”

Kiwior’s confidence transformed

Conducting an interview with Jakub Kiwior at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground in September left a lasting impression. But not for the reasons you might expect.

Untypically for a top-level footballer, the Poland international was strikingly shy in front of the camera, speaking quietly through an interpreter and, at one point, having to be gently reminded to look at his interviewer, rather than the floor, when giving his answers.

Jakub Kiwior celebrates with Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard against Sheffield United
Image:

It was endearing. A reminder that these players are not robots. Kiwior had arrived at Arsenal from Spezia nine months earlier. But he came with no knowledge of English and this was his first major interview. Plainly, he was still settling into his new surroundings.

Kiwior looked overawed on the pitch as well as off it at times in his early Arsenal appearances. In April, there was a particularly shaky cameo against Liverpool at Anfield. More recently, he was brought off prematurely in games against Luton and Fulham.

It was heartening, then, to see him now playing with enough confidence to pull off an audacious no-look assist for Gabriel Martinelli in Arsenal’s 6-0 win over Sheffield United before throwing himself into the celebrations with his team-mates.

Jakub Kiwior could be seen producing a no-look cut-back to set up Gabriel Martinelli
Image:

His eye-catching performance at Bramall Lane came after similarly impressive displays in the wins over Newcastle, Burnley and West Ham. Suddenly, a player who was struggling to carve out a place in Mikel Arteta’s team looks to have become a key component of it.

It is all the more impressive considering he is playing in a role which is almost entirely new to him. Kiwior, a natural centre-back, also featured as a holding midfielder with Spezia in Seria A. But never as a left-back. And certainly never in a system as demanding as Arteta’s.

Is it any wonder it took him time to adjust? As Arteta put it himself recently: “It is like pulling William Saliba in at full-back and saying: ‘Tomorrow, perform and do what we have to do’.”

Ben White, Arsenal’s centre-back-turned-full-back on the opposite flank, underlined the complexity of the role in conversation with Sky Sports in October. “To play full-back for him,” he said, “you have got to be a centre-mid, a centre-back, a winger, a No 10.”

Jakub Kiwior has played as Arsenal's left-back since an injury to Oleksandr Zinchenko
Image:
Jakub Kiwior has played as Arsenal’s left-back since an injury to Oleksandr Zinchenko

Kiwior is now doing all of that, rampaging forward on the overlap, as he did for that assist against Sheffield United, one of three he has provided in the last five Premier League games, but also tucking inside to help Arsenal build the play through midfield.

“I think he has adapted really well and he is playing better and better,” added Arteta. “You can tell that he is earning the confidence and that he understands the role much better.”

Arsenal will expect more of the same from their converted left-back against Brentford, live on Sky Sports on Saturday. Given Kiwior’s recent form, Oleksandr Zinchenko’s eventual return to fitness might not necessarily mean a return to the starting line-up.

How We Chose The Best Betting Sites In UAE

Online sports betting in the UAE has grown tremendously despite strict local laws against gambling. With plenty of offshore-based betting sites now available to residents, choosing the best presents a challenge. For Emirati bettors, knowing the factors that have helped us assemble the best betting sites in UAE is essential.

Highlighted below are the tips to note when choosing the best betting sites in the UAE:

Licensing and Regulation

At the top of our list, we check first for the bookmaker’s reliability. Reliability here denotes how well-regulated the platform is and what licenses it holds. Some reputable licensing jurisdictions to look out for are Curaçao, Malta, Cyrpus, and the UKGC.

Betting Options

Online sports betting encompasses a wide range of sports categories to meet the specific needs of different players. Even more important are the available betting options on each of these sports. Players are more likely to play at sportsbooks with more betting markets.

Odds and Payouts

The main purpose of sports betting is winning, and no better way to achieve this than by wagering good odds. We understand that some bookmakers tend to incorporate unfavorable margins, so we critically assess the quality of odds and payouts. The higher the odds and payout percentages on a sportsbook, the better it is for players.

Bonuses and Promotions

We know how exciting it is to be offered bonuses in the form of cash, free bets, or cashback. We also know that many sportsbooks have some type of bonus or promotion for new and existing players. To pick the best, we look at the value of these offers and how flexible the wagering requirements are.

Payment Methods

All forms of gambling in the UAE are severely frowned upon, as seen in other Muslim territories. For sportsbooks to be considered the best, they must offer a selection of payment methods that UAE residents can use. Even better are sports betting sites in UAE that support local currency (AED) transactions.

User Experience and Interface

Mobile-style gaming has taken a front seat in the world of online sports betting today. Many players want to be able to bet on their favourite sports easily and quickly via their mobile devices. We consider the overall design of a sportsbook, with a focus on quality user experiences and interface.

Customer Support

A top sports betting website operating in Dubai with unreliable customer service is considered a red flag. We critically assess the quality of a bookmaker’s support team as it’s the quickest way players can resolve issues. Things to look out for are live chat, email addresses, a FAQ section, and contact numbers for direct communication.

Reviewing The Top Sports Betting Sites In UAE

Our reviews of the top sports betting sites in the UAE are based on extensive, in-depth research of the platforms. We prioritize the satisfaction and experience of UAE players when reviewing sportsbooks. Below, we’ve put together the tips and tricks we use to make the best professional sportsbook reviews.

  • Security & Privacy: State-of-the-art safety features on an online betting site are essential. Players need to feel comfortable entering their personal and financial information on these sites. Features like SSL encryptions, 2F authentication, and RNG audits guarantee security and privacy.
  • Licensing information: A sportsbook must display its registration and licensing information on the website. This is important as it provides a clue to the overall quality of sports betting on that platform.
  • Sports variety: A bookmaker’s reputation depends on the number of available sports. It should cover popular sporting events as well as local sports.
  • Betting markets: Bookmakers understand that players’ needs can be varied. Therefore, it’s important to offer as many betting options as possible along with great odds on every event.
  • Promotions and bonuses: An impressive and generous catalog of bonuses and promotions is key. We not only consider the quantity of these offers but the quality as well, especially as it relates to wagering requirements.
  • Mobile accessibility: The best sports betting sites are accessible on desktops and mobile devices. Sportsbooks incorporating modern HTML5 technology can optimize their platforms for easy accessibility.

Payment Methods In UAE Online Betting Sites

Online betting sites in UAE offer many payment options to players in the region. Because of the legal restrictions on gambling, most of these sites tend to support crypto payments because of their anonymity. Traditional payment methods such as bank cards and eWallets are also available, allowing players to bank using the local currency.

In the list below, we’ve briefly highlighted the most common payment methods in UAE online betting sites:

  • Bank cards and wire transfers: The use of more traditional forms of banking can hardly go out of style. Even in places like the UAE, which has strict laws against gambling, some sportsbooks allow residents to use Visa, MasterCard, and wire transfers. For more anonymity, players can use these options to purchase cryptocurrencies to bet with online.
  • eWallets: Although this option is available to players in the UAE, only a few sportsbooks support them. Popular options like Skrill and PayPal are hardly available. However, you’ll find some sites that allow payments through WebMoney, Gpay, and Apple Pay.
  • Cryptocurrency: Crypto is the most popular payment method on online betting sites in the UAE. It provides the necessary security and anonymity to protect sports bettors from getting caught. Some popular cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ethereum.

How To Place A Bet On Betting Sites: Rules and Regulations

Despite its illegality, one of the many positives of betting in the UAE is that it can be done at offshore sports betting sites. Placing your bet is simple, and here is how to do it:

  1. Choose a sportsbook you can access from the UAE via VPN or a mirror link. Some sportsbooks, however, will allow direct access to their platforms.
  2. Sign up for a new account in the sportsbook and ensure you fill in all the necessary information. Many online sportsbooks in the UAE offer a one-click registration option, allowing players to sign up anonymously without a phone number.
  3. Visit the payments section to make your first deposit. For more anonymity, select the crypto option.
  4. Locate the sports section on the website and select any available sports categories.
  5. Find a game you wish to win and choose any betting market.
  6. Click on the odds to add your bet to your bet slip, then enter your stake amount into the box provided.
  7. Finally, click the ‘Place Bet’ button and wait to see the outcome.

Is PayPal Betting Possible In UAE?

Yes, PayPal betting is possible in the UAE, and residents can use it to make payments on sports betting sites. However, you should note that not many UAE betting sites support it. To use PayPal, download the application, deposit some money, and start betting with the funds held in your wallet.

Can I Play Casino Games At The Best Online Betting Sites In The UAE?

Yes, you can play casino games at most online betting sites in the UAE. Many sportsbooks, including those on our list, have a dedicated casino section for casino enthusiasts. These sites offer the most popular casino games, such as slots, live dealers, and table games.

Is Online Betting Illegal In UAE?

Yes, sports betting and all forms of gambling are illegal in the UAE. Although residents can access offshore betting platforms, the UAE does not offer operating licenses to sports betting operators. As a Muslim nation, the UAE follows the same laws as its neighboring Islamic countries.

Conclusion

COPSIN and Gruppo Nutrition Forge Strategic Partnership to Fuel Canada’s Athletes

(version français à suivre)

(March 7, 2024) The Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sports Institute Network (COPSIN) are proud to announce that they have entered into a four-year partnership with Gruppo Nutrition, a leading provider of sports nutrition products. This partnership will give the athletes and coaches affiliated with COPSIN all across Canada the opportunity to benefit from valuable discounts on Gruppo’s products.

Following on the pre-existing agreement between Gruppo and two COPSIN members – Canadian Sport Institute Pacific (CSI Pacific) and Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) – the agreement has now expanded to include all seven COPSIN members across the country.

Gruppo specializes in tailoring supplements to meet the unique needs of today’s high-performance athletes throughout their training, recovery, and nutrition routines. Committed to delivering products grounded in the latest sports science research, Gruppo ensures the use of premium ingredients, devoid of artificial colors, sweeteners, and preservatives. Every product batch undergoes rigorous testing for substances prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Moreover, Gruppo has the capability to formulate products specific to individual athletes, addressing their distinct training and competition requirements.

This strategic partnership aims to extend exclusive benefits to athletes and coaches affiliated with the COPSIN. By offering a discount code, Gruppo will enable these athletes and coaches to access pre-existing as well as fully personalized products at reduced rates. In its role as an official supporter of COPSIN, Gruppo will supply all seven members of the network with its premium products. NSOs referred to Gruppo by COPSIN will also be eligible for a discount directly from Gruppo.

Quotes:

“We have been using Gruppo at Canadian Sport Institute Pacific as an excellent source of supplements for over a decade and are thrilled that athletes across Canada are getting the same access, throughout COPSIN. Gruppo’s products have helped Canadian athletes fuel for performance for many years and we’re very excited to see this national expansion, which will benefit even more Canadian athletes.”

Sue Boegman – Nutrition Lead and Registered Dietitian, Canadian Sport Institute Pacific

“Gruppo is thrilled to renew and expand a partnership that first started in 2008 with the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network (COPSIN) in British Columbia.

Having a partnership with each of the provincial sport centres allows us to work with even more athletes across Canada. We are so very proud to be supportive of athletes competing on the world stage and (as a result of) being partnered with the COPSIN.  Another key benefit is that this allows us to work intimately with some of the top sport nutritionists and physiologists in Canada, which continues to be an important part of our growth as a company. The same science that goes into fuelling and supporting the recovery of our high-performance athletes competing on the world stage goes into the products that we offer to all of customers.”

Darcy Haggith – CEO Gruppo Nutrition

“Darcy and the entire Gruppo team have proven to be exceptional partners to a number of our Institutes over many years, and we are thrilled to expand that partnership across all of COPSIN. Gruppo continues to consistently offer innovative and reliable nutrition products for our affiliated athletes and coaches. We look forward to working together to help registered athletes and coaches across Canada achieve their athletic goals.”

Wendy Pattenden, COPSIN representative, CEO, Canadian Sport Institute Pacific

Rangers rookie Matt Rempe throwing fists and enjoying ride: ‘Can’t script that’

Matt Rempe was walking down the street in New York last week.

A car pulled up alongside the hulking Rangers rookie. Down rolled the windows.

“What’s going on?” he thought to himself. Then the chanting started.

“They’re like, ‘Rempe! Rempe!’” he added with a grin. “I’m like, ‘Hey!’

“Pretty cool.”

A six-foot-seven forward turning heads across hockey, Rempe has experienced plenty of similar moments eight games into his NHL career — mostly because of his fists.

The Calgary native dropped the gloves on his first shift against New York Islanders tough guy Matt Martin. He also went toe-to-toe with Philadelphia’s Nicolas Deslauriers and Mathieu Olivier of Columbus.

His face a bruised and discoloured mess after receiving as many punches as delivered, Rempe then squared off with Toronto enforcer Ryan Reaves at centre ice on “Hockey Night in Canada” last weekend.

“You can’t script that,” Matt O’Dette, Rempe’s junior coach, said of his former player’s rise. “Whole thing has been right out of a movie.”

The Big Apple has a new cult hero.

The 21-year-old has posed for pictures at a restaurant sporting two black eyes, been dubbed the “Rempire State Building” by fans, and had his name bellowed by the crowd at Madison Square Garden.

“Unbelievable,” said Rempe, a lanky 240 pounds with a long reach. “A lot of fun getting to live my dream.”

The 165th pick at the 2020 draft also wants to show he can play.

});

“I can do lots of different things,” said Rempe, who has a goal, an assist and 39 penalty minutes through eight NHL games. “But I want to be the guy to stand up for my teammates.”

He’s done that through his 24 periods in the show.

“Not an easy task,” said Rangers defenceman K’Andre Miller. “Done a great job.”

O’Dette, who coached Rempe for three seasons with the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds, remembers first seeing the undrafted beanpole at spring camp.

“If he’s lanky now, you should have seen him back then,” O’Dette said. “A baby giraffe.”

“Skinniest kid ever,” Rempe said. “A pair of ribs.”

But something was there. He worked on his skills and in the gym to fill out, scoring a combined 25 regular-season and playoff goals in 2021-22.

Rempe, coincidentally, didn’t fight much in junior. Roughly 10 times in the WHL before somewhere in the neighbourhood of 15 in the American Hockey League before last month’s call-up.

“He’s learning on the fly,” O’Dette said.

The Thunderbirds — the older players grew up under Rempe’s massive wing — were bussing to Prince George, B.C., when he stepped outdoors and into the NHL at MetLife Stadium in front of 80,000 people against the Islanders on Feb. 18.

“The service wasn’t great,” O’Dette said of attempts to stream the game. “It cut out and came back. Remps was in the box. He’d already had the fight.”

Rempe’s rise has also reignited debates around the practice. Staged fisticuffs in the NHL have largely melted away with the increase of speed and skill, but that’s not the case with Rempe, who’s been challenged in warm-ups.

And any time he was near Reaves last Saturday once the puck dropped, the crowd buzzed until the pair eventually slugged it out to roaring approval.

“Seems to be a really nice, humble kid,” said the 37-year-old tough guy. “Going to be a menace in this league.”

Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe said fighting still has its place in the game.

“But the same time, I have a brother that had over 200 fights,” he said. “Certainly see the safety side.”

O’Dette worries each time Rempe drops the gloves.

“Trying to make a name for himself,” said his former coach. “He’s dedicated and committed to doing whatever it takes to stay in the NHL. But he’s a multi-faceted kid. Lots of layers to him.”

That includes playing musical instruments and being a big reader.

“Intelligent and genuine,” O’Dette said. “I’m excited with this attention. People will see what kind of person he is, and also see he’s a good player.”

Rempe, who made his NHL debut on the six-year anniversary of his father’s death, didn’t forget the help that got him to New York.

“Texted everybody on our staff to thank us,” O’Dette said. “He put in the work, but to have the wherewithal to do that … special kid.”

Rempe, meanwhile, hasn’t been forgotten by people back in Calgary.

“My mom was like, ‘Your childhood doctor phoned,’” he said. “Called my mom’s landline and talked about how proud he was.”

A lot has changed for Rempe in less than three weeks.

He’s also enjoying this ride — and a new-found fame that includes getting recognized by passing motorists — in the city that never sleeps.

“Media attention is different,” he said. “I just go home and like to read my books.

“It’s been really cool, but just want to stay level-headed.”

IND vs ENG 5th Test: Kuldeep-led Indian bowlers leave England in tailspin

The fragility of England batters against high-quality spin was exposed once again before India showed them how to bat on a flat track by cruising to 135 for one at stumps on day one of the fifth and final Test here on Thursday. Opting to bat, England were all at sea against the mastery of left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav whose fourth five-wicket haul in Tests allowed India to bowl out the visitors for 218 in their first innings shortly after tea. Playing his 100th Test, R Ashwin cleaned up the tail with four wickets while Ravindra Jadeja took one. Contrary to expectations, all 10 wickets went to the spinners at the scenic HPCA Stadium and the last seven batsmen fell while adding only 43 runs.

India came out to bat in bright sunshine and Rohit Sharma (52 batting off 83 balls) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (57 off 58b) put the hosts in firm control with a 104-run stand. India reached 135 for one in 30 overs at close. Shubman Gill (26 off 39b) was batting alongside Rohit.

It was the highest opening stand of this series for India and was broken when Jaiswal got a bit carried away to be stumped off Shoaib Bashir after collecting back-to-back boundaries.

The southpaw’s pre-meditated charge down the ground came soon after he became only the second Indian to amass 700 runs in a series after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved the feat twice against the West Indies in 1971 and 1978-79.

The ball did not do much for the England pacers and spinners compared to their Indian counterparts. Jaiswal was watchful to start with and waited for the spinners to be in operation. He put Bashir to sword in his very first over by dispatching him for three sixes into the stands, two of them over extra cover.

The Indian skipper, at the other end, too played confidently. He made his intentions clear by pulling a 150kmph rising delivery off Mark Wood over fine leg for six in the fourth over of the innings.

His second maximum came off spinner Tom Hartley in the cow corner region.

However, India’s march to command started in the second session when they reduced the visitors to 194 for eight at tea as Kuldeep engineered a middle-order collapse that saw England lose three wickets for no run.

All of a sudden England found themselves reeling at 175 for six from three down on the same score.

England lost six wickets in the middle session for 94 runs.

Kuldeep could have got rid of Zak Crawley (79 off 108) on the second ball after lunch break but India opted against DRS for a catch.

But the 29-year-old spinner did not have to wait long thereafter as he got one to turn massively from the imaginary fifth stump to shatter the England opener’s leg-stump. Both the inward drift and the sharp turn led to Crawley’s dismissal.

Jonny Bairstow (29 off 19b), who is also playing his 100th Test, showed plenty of intent in his innings but could not last long. Like the other batters, he could not read Kuldeep from his hands and got a faint outside edge off a googly.

He went for a review but ended up wasting it, exactly what Joe Root (26) and Ben Stokes (0) did on the same score of 175. Jadeja trapped Root in front with a straighter one after beating the English batter’s outside edge on the previous ball.

Stokes was the fifth victim of Kuldeep who had the opposition skipper plumb in front with a googly. Kuldeep ended up bowling 15 overs straight on either side of the lunch and afternoon session.

Ashwin sent back Hartley and Wood in quick session to join the spinners’ party. In the morning, Crawley made a classy unbeaten half-century after surviving an extended opening spell from the Indian pacers before Kuldeep struck twice to leave the visitors at 100 for two at lunch.

On expected lines, the skillful duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj made the ball talk but Ben Duckett (27 off 58) and Crawley were able to see off the first 14 overs of fast bowling after being beaten multiple times.

Crawley, who has been England’s stand-out batter in this series, was meticulous with his shot selection and played some delightful cover drives off pacers on way to his half-century.

Siraj ended up bowling eight overs in the morning session and Bumrah seven with both conceding 24 runs.

Kuldeep came to bowl in the 18th over and struck instantly.

Despite being hit for two fours off his first five balls, Kuldeep was not afraid to flight the ball and was rewarded when Duckett’s mistimed hit was pouched by Gill, who took a spectacular catch running backwards from cover. Like Duckett, Crawley too was beaten by the pacers in the first hour of play but he picked the right balls to flaunt his cover drives.

He reached his fourth half-century of the series with a boundary down the ground but that remained the only bright spot for England this day.

Proud moment for Ashwin, family and nation: Rohit

Skipper Rohit also said during the toss, “We would have batted first as well. We have done really well so far in this series and an opportunity to finish on a high. Mike Weir hopes for raucous pro-International crowd at Presidents Cup

It’s not that Mike Weir wants the fans at Royal Montreal Golf Club to be hostile toward the United States team when the Presidents Cup comes to Canada, but he definitely doesn’t want the Americans to be comfortable.

Weir, from Brights Grove, Ont., is the first Canadian to captain the International Team at the best-on-best men’s tournament. Beyond selecting the squad’s players he is responsible for the tournament’s design aesthetic and, maybe most important, he has to set the tone with fans.

“When the U.S. goes overseas to play, it’s a totally different atmosphere than when they’re playing at home and traditionally, in the Presidents Cup, there hasn’t been that much of a contrast and that is our challenge,” Weir said. “Letting them know that you need to get behind our guys and make them feel supported and through that is making the other side feel a little bit uncomfortable.”

Weir said Presidents Cup organizers are teaming up with the Montreal Canadiens and their owner Geoff Molson to promote a hockey-like atmosphere.

“We don’t want it to be that over the top, but we want it to feel like the crowd is really, really with us,” he said.

The International Team’s only victory over the U.S. came at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia in 1998. It also earned a tie in 2003 at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club in George, South Africa, in 2003.

Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., hosted the biannual event in 2022, with the U.S. winning 17 1/2-12 1/2. Although thousands of American fans are expected to stream across the border in September when the 12-on-12 tournament is in Montreal, Weir hopes to make it truly feel like an away game and get a result like Australia 26 years ago.

“We’ve put a lot of thought into it and we continue amongst our team to talk about that home course, home country advantage,” said Weir. “We’re trying to engage a lot of the fans around the country with a lot of stuff that will be upcoming that we’re doing.

“We want the whole country to be involved and engaged. … We do want it to feel like it’s a home advantage for us.”

Royal Montreal hosted the Presidents Cup in 2007, when the United States beat the Internationals 19 1/2-14 1/2. Weir battled Tiger Woods in a climactic matchup that captured the imagination of many Canadian golf fans.

Weir said that, in its way, that experience was instructive in his current role as a non-playing captain.

“Tiger was playing and I think fans were excited to see him,” said Weir. “I felt like the fans were fantastic, but they were very cordial to the U.S. side.

“We want them to be a little bit louder and a little bit more raucous than the past.”

The 2022 edition of the Presidents Cup was the first time that more than one Canadian played in the event, with Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., earning his way on to the team as an automatic selection and Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont., picked by captain Trevor Immelman of South Africa.

Weir, and the Canadians on the PGA Tour, are hoping to have even more of a maple flavour at Royal Montreal. The top six players on the U.S. and International rankings are automatically chosen, and then Weir and U.S. captain Jim Furyk get to pick their next six players.

Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., is currently fourth in the International Team rankings. Adam Hadwin, also from Abbotsford, is ninth and Conners in 12th, meaning they could be easy choices for Weir to add.

Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., and Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., are 16th and 17th respectively, making them possible reaches. Pendrith is 22nd.

“You’ve got to give credit to Golf Canada and their development program that they’ve put together,” Weir said of the number of eligible Canadians. “A lot of those guys grew up together, were in that junior program together, and the development program.

“They’ve continued to elevate their games and elevate their careers.”

There are no Canadians currently playing LIV Golf, the team-based circuit backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Weir confirmed that LIV Golf players like Chile’s Joaquin Niemann will not be eligible to play in the Presidents Cup.

Weir held a dinner with approximately 15 of the possible players who could play for the International Team ahead of this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Taylor, Hadwin, Svensson, Conners and Hughes are all in the field at Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Fla., this week.

KORN FERRY TOUR: Edmonton’s Wil Bateman is the top-ranked Canadian on the second-tier Korn Ferry Tour. He’s ranked 12th heading into this week’s Astara Chile Classic at Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago. There are six other Canadians in the field, including Etienne Papineau (28th) of St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que., Myles Creighton (54th) of Digby, N.S., and Sudarshan Yellamaraju (105th) of Mississauga, Ont. Vancouver’s Stuart Macdonald, Jared du Toit of Kimberley, B.C., and Thomas Giroux of Georgetown, Ont., enter the tournament unranked.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Calgary’s Stephen Ames, currently ranked second in the Schwab Cup standings, will be in the field at the Cologuard Classic at La Paloma Country Club in Tucson, Ariz. Weir, when he’s done with his responsibilities at Bay Hill, will also play at the Cologuard Classic when it tees off on Friday. Weir is 38th on the Schwab Cup list.

DP WORLD TOUR: Aaron Cockerill of Stony Mountain, Man., is in the opening group at the Jonsson Workwear Open 2024 at Glendower Golf Club in Dowerglen, Edenbale, South Africa. He’s 13th in the Race to Dubai Rankings.

LPGA TOUR: Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., and Savannah Grewal of Mississauga, Ont., are in the field at Blue Bay LPGA at Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Course in China. Both are currently unranked on the Race to CME Globe standings.

EPSON TOUR: Maddie Szeryk of London, Ont., leads the Canadian contingent into the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic on Friday at the Country Club of Winter Haven in Winter Haven. She’ll be joined by Hamilton’s Alena Sharp, Selena Costabile of Thornhill, Ont., Kate Johnston of Ayr, Ont., and Brigitte Thibault of Rosemere, Que., in the first event on the 2024 tour’s calendar.

Scotland: Will Steve Clarke name Lawrence Shankland, Craig Gordon or any other surprises in Euro 2024 squad?

With just 100 days to go until Scotland kick off Euro 2024 against hosts Germany – who will make head coach Steve Clarke’s final squad?

A total of 29 players featured across the eight qualifiers – as Scotland sealed their spot in style at this summer’s tournament.

Clarke’s side won their first five games – a run that included victories over Spain at Hampden Park and in Oslo over Erling Haaland’s Norway – with qualification secured with two games to spare.

However, just 23 players can board that plane to Germany, so here’s a look at who is in the mix…

Could Gordon make a remarkable return?

Image:
Craig Gordon is back in action for Hearts after a double-leg break

Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn beat off competition from Hearts’ Zander Clark and Motherwell’s Liam Kelly for the No 1 jersey at the start of the campaign – having pledged his allegiance to Scotland, despite playing for England U21s.

He took over from the injured Craig Gordon who had been recovering from a double leg break suffered in December 2022 during Hearts’ Christmas Eve game against Dundee United.

The 41-year-old is back however, and were he to replace Clark at club level before the end of this season, Gordon could force himself into the manager’s plans.

Image:
Zander Clark (right) started Scotland’s last two qualifiers ahead of Liam Kelly (left) while Angus Gunn was injured

“There’s no doubt at this moment in time Angus Gunn is Steve Clarke’s No 1,” said Sky Sports’ Kris Boyd.

“Obviously, he fancied Zander Clark ahead of Liam Kelly for the last two games – replacing Gunn who was injured.

Angus Gunn did not concede a goal from open play during Scotland's first five qualifiers

“Zander has done himself no harm there but if Craig Gordon comes back and he ends up playing between the sticks for Hearts, where does that leave him?

“It’s a difficult one. That’s why Steve gets paid the big bucks, he can make the decisions and we’ll just talk about it!”

Any shocks in defence or midfield?

Scotland's Andy Robertson celebrates as his cross is turned into the England goal by Harry Maguire

Andy Robertson, John McGinn and Scott McTominay are all expected to be in Scotland’s squad for the Euros

Clarke has been consistent in his back-line selections, with Aaron Hickey, Ryan Porteous, Jack Hendry, Kieran Tierney, Nathan Patterson and captain Andrew Robertson featuring in the most number of games.

Grant Hanley, Liam Cooper, John Souttar, Scott McKenna, Dominic Hyam, Anthony Ralston and Greg Taylor all featured at some point during the eight qualifiers too, while Josh Doig and Ross McCrorie were named in a squad but did not play.

Midfielders John McGinn, Callum McGregor and Scott McTominay featured in every match – a feat only matched by forwards Ryan Christie and Lyndon Dykes – suggesting Clarke will be consistent with his approach in the middle too.

Stuart Armstrong (6), Kenny McLean (7) and Billy Gilmour (5) all featured consistently too and would be expected to board the plane to Germany – but will Ryan Jack and Lewis Ferguson also make the cut having featured in just three games?

Jack has been struggling with injuries but will be desperate to make the cut having missed the last Euros due to injury, while Ferguson has impressed in Serie A with six goals and four assists for Bologna this season.

Boyd said: “Even if there were some dips with his regulars, I don’t think he’d leave them out because he knows exactly what they can do when they come to camp.

“There might be the odd one who could force their way in but listening to Clarke he spoke about the group, the unity and the togetherness of that squad.

“The nucleus of it won’t change unless Steve Clarke can talk some of the English Premier League players to come out and play for Scotland, which is being spoken about.”

Shankland, Brown or Nisbet up-front?

TBILISI, GEORGIA - NOVEMBER 16: Scotland Manager Steve Clarke celebrates with Lawrence Shankland at full time during a UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifier between Georgia and Scotland at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena, on November 16, 2023, in Tbilisi, Georgia. (Photo by Craig Williamson / SNS Group)

Lawrence Shankland scored to seal a draw for Scotland in Georgia

The real dilemma for Clarke could come at the top end of the pitch.

Ryan Christie, Lyndon Dykes and Che Adams are almost guaranteed to be in the squad, but who else could join them?

Having scored 20 goals in 29 league games, Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland also netted during Scotland’s draw in Georgia.

Meanwhile, Jacob Brown – who started in the 3-3 draw against Norway – has scored just two league goals this season for Luton Town, and Millwall’s Kevin Nisbet will hope his injury woes are behind him as he looks to force his way into Clarke’s plans.

“Che Adams is nailed on, Dykes has done really well for Scotland and you’d fancy him to go,” said Boyd.

Jacob Brown started in Scotland’s draw against Norway in their final qualifier

“Brown started against Norway and is probably the most similar to Che Adams in style. But for me, I’d have Lawrence Shankland on the flight all day long.

“You know if you create opportunities for him he’ll score goals. There was nobody in that Scotland squad against Georgia who scores the header he scored.”

Anderson, Gordon or Barnes surprise call?

Elliot Anderson was called up to the Scotland squad but withdrew before the games in September
Image:
Elliot Anderson was called up to the Scotland squad but withdrew before the games in September

While Clarke has been consistent with the group of players he calls up – could there be some new faces to add to the mix?

Harvey Barnes, Elliot Anderson and Anthony Gordon were all linked with a Scotland call-up – with Tino Livramento also eligible for the national side.

It is unlikely Anderson will feature after he was added to the squad by Clarke in August but then withdrew ahead of the September qualifier against Cyprus and friendly against England.

Gordon meanwhile is set to be capped for England but Barnes could be an option having recovered from his injury.

With Gunn impressing despite playing for England’s U21 side and players from across the Premier League shining under Clarke on the international front – could others be tempted to play for Scotland?

Boyd said: “I have nothing against it. As a player, you deserve to dream, to go and represent your own country but if you’ve got parents or grandparents who are Scottish, we’re more than welcome to have them!

“There are a lot [in this Scotland team] who have played at the top end of the English Premier League and it does help. Clarke is big on testing yourself against the best opposition. When you’re playing in that league week in, week out you know you’re going to be tested. It only helps the players, the environment and the squad going forward.

“I’m not getting too caught up in it because it would be wrong to overlook the boys who have managed to get Scotland to another major tournament.”

Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight showdown with Francis Ngannou takes place on Friday March 8, live on Sky Sports Box Office with the main event expected around 11pm. Book Joshua v Ngannou now!
