Online marketplaces have made it easier to sell used items, but choosing from so many options can be confusing.

Amazon and eBay are the top players in the eCommerce, but when it comes to selling used items, it’s not clear which one is the better option.

Market Share

A research done by Marketplace Pulse concluded that Amazon has captured more market share compared to its competitors worldwide. A higher market share confirms that Amazon has a wider reach and will help in advertising your products better. 

Revenue 

Considering the market share difference between both platforms, comparing revenue seems a bit unfair. In 2022, Amazon generated a staggering $514 billion in revenue, whereas eBay accumulated $10.41 billion, setting its competitor in a different league. 

Fees 

When considering selling used items on Amazon or eBay, it’s important to factor in the fees. Both platforms charge the sellers for every item you sell through their marketplace. 

eBay

If we talk about eBay, it allows you to list 250 items monthly for free. Nevertheless, if you somehow exceed the 250 limit, the platform will charge you $0.35 per listing. eBay also charges up to 12.9% fees on sales exceeding $7.5K. 

It’s worth noting that fees on eBay differ by the product type you’re selling. For instance, if you’re selling a guitar, you’ll only get charged 3.5% of the final value of your sale.

Amazon 

Amazon charges considerably higher fees than Amazon. Being a professional seller on Amazon, you must buy a monthly subscription of $39.99. Although there is no listing fee, the platform deducts its referral fee for every sale you make. 

In most cases, the referral fee is fixed at 15%, but the referral fee can also differ based on your product type. For instance, if you’re selling items like books or video games, Amazon charges you a closing fee of $1.80 for every item. 

If you choose to use the Amazon FBA services, there will be further fees, too! The Additional fees in the FBA service cover the handling, storage, shipping, and packaging of your products.

Return Policy 

While both platforms have a reputation for being a reliable platform, its return policies are more user-friendly. Amazon’s shipping policy allows its customers to get a full return on their purchase, provided that they are unsatisfied with the delivery times or the quality of the purchase. 

On the other hand, eBay has a much more complicated policy for users. eBay’s “no Returns” box often leaves the buyers ticked, considering that they have no alternative other than keeping the product they’re unhappy with. 

While you might believe that the “No Returns” policy helps you boost sales, it’s contradictory. By setting the no-return policy, you send a message to the customers that your products aren’t trustworthy. And also, unless you don’t have stellar ratings, it’ll be very difficult for you to get any orders. 

Selling Models 

The biggest difference you’ll notice between both platforms is through their selling models. While Amazon offers huge discounts often, it usually adheres to a fixed-price system, irrespective of the product’s condition. 

Whereas eBay gives sellers a choice between the fixed-price model or the auction-style method. This unique approach allows the buyers to place bids on items for a specific amount of time. After the bid time runs out, the person offering the highest bid for your product gets it. 

Considering that you’re selling used items, it’s best to go with the auction-priced system. This pricing method allows you to get the best value for your items, especially if you’re unsure about the value of your product. 

Product Types 

Amazon 

While both platforms offer a long range of product types, Amazon’s size allows it to capitalize and offer a more diverse market. Whether it is electronics, books, or home goods, it’s highly unlikely not to find something on Amazon. 

Compared to eBay, Amazon boasts a much more formal product catalog. Its ideal design makes it easy for users to find products that match their interests. To further enhance the user experience, Amazon also shows trending products, giving sellers more exposure to sell their products. 

eBay 

Since its launch, eBay has been considered as the ideal platform, especially for buying and selling used products. While eBay features items like collector’s items, historical items, and other special buys, it has a much more relaxed vibe compared to Amazon. 

eBay is also very price competitive, which is why more people are drawn to it to shop for used goods. Considering the pricing, the used items listed on eBay are often a good deal. 

eBay further encourages sellers to create a separate listing for every product, whereas Amazon allows various sellers to sell the same product in a mutual listing. Having separate listing accounts for better exposure of your eBay account, allowing you to gain more customer reach.

I’m Andrew Kamphey. Yes I am the resident Google Sheets Wizard behind Better Sheets. Better Sheets is a suite of Tools, Templates, and Tutorials for Google Sheets users.

The business generated total revenue of $200,000 in the first three years. It is very spiky revenue month to month but usually averages around $5k and can peak around $10k for months like Black Friday and when I raise the LTD price.

Recently I added a $9 a month membership after testing out some other price points. And my LTD price is now over $200 so I wanted a better entry point into the Better Sheets universe in addition to the free videos on YouTube, Tiktok, and paid courses on Udemy.

What’s your backstory, and how did you come up with the idea?

After 5 years managing Google Sheets into a huge internal database and tool kit at a startup, I went off on my own. But what did I do? I started a newsletter about the Influencer Marketing industry. And then sold that. And then tried to start building a SaaS. Hda a technical cofounder but we just never got it to a sustainable profitable position.

Not all about Google Sheet is it? Not at all. I never thought I’d be a Google Sheets Guru. I still don’t think I am. But people kept mentioning how my google sheets planners were totally unique. I could do things in Google Sheets people could only dream of.

In April 2020, during the height of covid lockdown I vowed to myself that I’d launch something, anything. And in 24 hours I gave myself a deadline. Launch Something!

The absolutely first idea of Better Sheets was a Dribbble for Google Sheets. I wanted to make a collection of great Google Sheets. But I couldn’t find any. 

So then I was like well maybe I can show people how to make greate Google Sheets and eventually there would be enough to showcase. I made 8 tutorial videos in 1 day. Put 4 up for free, and 4 behind a paywall. That was the first version of BetterSheets.

Launched on a Saturday. Made the first sale on Monday. The 2nd sale took another 2 weeks.

At first I set it up as a side project.  The launch in and of itself was the success. I started it at the time as a one-time payment and to this day there is still a lifetime payment option. It’s just a bit higher price now, than when I had only 8 videos total.

Describe the process of launching and growing the business.

The launch in the first 24 hours is rather boring. I just made the videos.Put up a Gumroad sales page and a Carrd site. That’s about it. I’m looking back and thinking “wow did that really take me a whole day?” 

I think that because I can make a new carrd site in about 10 minutes now. Yeah I guess the writing, the hand wringing, and the general insecurity of not doing this particular thing ever before can take a lot of hours of the day.

These days I open a google doc, start writing, and I even launched a Google Doc as a site within the last week. SellingSpreadsheets.com was available and matches the name of the my next course I’m making. So I just redirect the domain to the Google Doc that explains the course. The functionally of that took about 3-4 minutes. But yeah the writing has taken weeks and the experience I needed has taken years.

Within the past year I made a huge change, or adjustment. I started making more tools for Google Sheets users. 

Originally I created Better Sheets as a library of tutorials, that happen to have some structure. Structured around Courses that you have to watch the videos in a particular order, and Topics where you can watch videos in no particular order. 

I had been making tools in sheets that weren’t for Google Sheets users but rather for users of other things. Like Better Letters is a suite of sheets to help run a curated newsletter. 100 Twitter Templates is a sheet to help you tweet.

But starting 2022 I have built Google Sheet Add-ons, and web based tools. So far I have 6 Google Sheet Add-ons published to the Google Workspace Marketplace. Ones like Sheet Styles and Tiny Sheets have done well with thousands of downloads. They are all free.

In mid 2022 I started created web based tools to help do more things with Sheets like make a copy url and a PDF Export url.

Also I have created Formula Generators you can just explain your issue and it will create a formula. Some are specific to REGEXMATCH or Conditional Formatting, but also a general Google Sheets formula generator that you can ask it anything.

What has worked to attract new customers?

The number one thing that attracts new customer is being listed on AppSumo Marketplace. Once I got listed on there I’ve had tons and tons of customers. 80% of my customers come via AppSumo Marketplace. And I make 85% of my revenue via AppSumo Marketplace. 

They have been very good for me and to me. Helped me build quality links to my work and distribute my work. I offered a package of 19 Google Sheets Templates on AppSumo and that’s been downloaded more than 40,000 times. They’ve featured Better Sheets in blogs and videos.

On the marketplace they are taking around 30% of the revenue but they generate nearly 100% of the customers. Fair deal in my book.

In the past year I’m also pushing my courses on to course platforms like Udemy. It’s been very nice to be able to access a marketplace of people who are actively searching to get better. Instead of spending money on ppc ads, or influencer marketing, or paid marketing, or doing earned marketing on podcasts and newsletters, I’m getting essentially free traffic. 

And at times you can make the claim they are paying me to find new customers for me. Because everyone who takes any of my Google Sheets courses on Udemy have a high percentage chance to want to get a tool to do something better, or learn more to get better, or buy a template to save time.

What are your plans for the future, and what are you currently working on?

Right at the moment I’m building my course Selling Spreadsheets. Trying to distill my own experience of selling spreadsheets for the past 3 years. While also incorporating other sellers’ perspectives and figuring out what’s the most essential steps for a person who is first starting to sell vs someone who is looking to sell more. 

I want to cover both paths and they can both benefit from some fundamentals. But wholly they can both benefit from just thinking in an abundance mindset. There are just not enough  “spreadsheet sellers” these days. 

Everyone should be selling spreadsheets. You should be selling spreadsheets.

It’s so simple to do and can help people in such a nice way.

For decades we’ve had to share Excel files like they are some physical product. And now Google Sheets are so collaborative, and online, cloud based. For a $6 a month tool like Google Workspace, it’s a LOT of value to everyone.

But the one thing that stays the same is everyone wants to hoard their sheets.

And I’m building more and more tools around the advice I give. If I give some piece of advice a lot and make a tutorial about it, I now think about how I can make the outcome possible with one click. Do you have any advice for other entrepreneurs who are just starting out or want to get started?

Find an accountability group. That could be a single person or heck, a rubber duck. It’s not about finding the people who are accountable to you or that hold you accountable, but rather finding the right people you want to be held accountable to. It could be a writing group, or a marketing  group, or a hacking group.

Meet them at least once a week and make something. Tell each other what you’re working on. Then go make it. Then show it to one another. That’s it.

I have that group. A group called Hackagu and I think the format is infinitely useful. It’s useful if you’re launching. It’s useful if you’re doing marketing. It’s useful if you’re building features or new business models.

Just get together once a week and say what you’ll do and do it. That’s it.

Being able to show someone else the work you do does two things. It makes you do the thing but also it gets you very used to public critique. Showing someone something can be a very daunting task for someone just starting out. 

By getting used to on a weekly basis for saying what you’ll do and doing what you said you would do, it primes the pump of accountability. 

You’ll have a better understanding of what you can say you’ll do and actually do. You’ll also be freer to put more of your self out in the world. 

If it’s tweet you want to do more of, then host a weekly tweeters group at a local coffee shop.

If it’s writing blog posts, host a weekly bloggers group.

9:30 AM Introduce yourself, what you’re working on, and what you’ll do today. Should take about 2 minutes per person.

Have lunch together and a break.

4:00 PM Demos. Show what you made/wrote/worked on. In any form it is. 

By doing this every week you’ll get in the habit of figuring out what to do, what you can do. Focusing on that thing. Doing it. And sharing it.

The entire process is important.

You can see most of the tools that I’ve built over the past year have been built this way. I had a question or a thought of “oh I’d like to make that” and then shared it at 9:30 am and Had it done by 4pm that day. Showed it.  Then launched it to Better Sheets members.

Welcome to the final installment in our hexalogy, concerning how to sell blog products in an era when people are reaching into their pockets and finding mostly lint. So far, we’ve discussed how to plan out products drawn from your expertise, create them, distinguish yourself from your competitors, test-market, figure out how much to charge, and find a clientele. If you’re late to the party, check out the previous parts of this series, right from the start, before going any further.

Say you’ve done all of the above. Now, the only remaining step is to get the sale. Sounds obvious, but all the preliminary work means nothing if you don’t close. You need to tell people to buy, rather than just crossing your fingers and hoping that they might.

It’s not just writing…

There’s a certain finesse required with this. You don’t sell in the same voice in which you entice, cajole, or inform. Lots of bloggers have trouble making the transition. If you’re going to put yourself out there as a seller of “you-branded” content, you don’t have the luxury of stumbling through and hoping that your sales pitch falls on receptive ears.

At this point, considering how much you’ve put in, selling yourself is mandatory, not optional. You have to use language forcefully, more forcefully than you do in your blog posts. Burrow into your prospect’s head, and by extension, your prospect’s wallet.

Focusing on the benefits

There’s a timeless axiom in the advertising business: People don’t want a bar of soap, they want clean hands.

The benefit of the product is far more important than the product itself. When you instead start focusing on the product—which, granted, you expended considerable effort to create—you’re not exactly empathizing with your clientele. It’s supposed to be about them, not you. No one cares how many hours you spent interviewing people for the DVD series you’re selling. Nor could anyone be less interested in how many pages your ebook is. (Beyond a certain point, of course. If you’re going to charge $329 for a three-page ebook, it had better contain the GPS coordinates for the Ark of the Covenant.)

No, cost-conscious buyers—any discerning buyers, really—want to know the answer to the universal question:

What’s in it for me?

How are you going to make your readers’ lives easier/simpler/richer? State how you’re going to do it. Yes, it’s great that you poured your heart and soul into your work, but that doesn’t necessarily make it sellable.

The human tendency is to concentrate on oneself, rather than other people. Which makes perfect sense—of course you’ll brush your own teeth and wash your own windows before doing the same for your neighbor. But if you want other people’s money, you have to force yourself to think about them first, as unnatural as that might sound.

Here’s an example of what not to write to get people to buy your products. The example is technically fictional, but it’s a composite of other bloggers’ calls-to-action:

“Starting today, I’m running a discount on my latest project. You can get my 36-page, 8,459-word ebook for just $11.99. This ebook, Car Noises And How To Diagnose Them, is the result of many months of research, and is now being made available to you for a special introductory price.”

Wow. Thanks for doing me the favor of offering to take my money. This is like the employee who walks into the boss’s office requesting a raise, and the first point he cites is how many hours of uncompensated overtime he puts in. Or that he has a baby on the way. You need to give your employer, or anyone else in the position of enriching you, a reason for doing so. Again, concentrate on the end users here. Without them, you and your product are nothing.

Here’s an alternative sales script, one that focuses on the buyer. It’s longer, but it also (hopefully) appeals to the buyer’s senses:

“Your car makes an unfamiliar noise. So naturally, your first reaction is to drive to the nearest mechanic, and waste maybe half an hour in the waiting room, putting yourself at the mercy of a professional whose livelihood rests on finding as many things wrong with people’s cars as possible.

For the love of God, don’t. Stop throwing your money away. That knock you hear doesn’t mean you need a new $1400 transmission assembly. It means you need to spend a couple more dollars on higher-octane fuel. That ear-splitting undercarriage rattle can be quieted in seconds, with the appropriate ratchet and a quarter-turn of your wrist.

My new ebook, Car Noises And How To Diagnose Them, breaks down the most common, least pleasant sounds that can emanate from your car. It tells you where they originate, what they mean, and how to prevent them. Some will require a look from a technician, but you’ll be amazed how many won’t. Obviously that sales treatment isn’t going to be suitable for your blog and its products, but you get the idea. People are more budget-conscious these days than they’ve been in some time. They will part with their money, but you need to give them a compelling reason to.

Drawing the line

This doesn’t mean you should be penning advertising copy with dubious assertions. (“Scientifically proven to regrow hair!”) Quite the contrary. If there’s ever a time to be honest, it’s when you’re explaining to your readers what your products can do for them. Your readers will respect you for it, and if you give them value, they’ll spread the word.

For an established blogger, creating products that extend that blog can be a rewarding way to engage your readers and foster an ever-growing audience. For an up-and-coming blogger, selling a worthwhile product can cement your reputation as an authority in your field all the more quickly. Creating blog products takes plenty of time and effort, and while selling them in a rough economy can be a challenge, it’s such challenges that separate the average bloggers from the remarkable ones.

Say what your product’s benefit is (not what your product is, what its benefit is.), and sell.
