The Great COVID Cover-Up

According to U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, author of “Deception: The Great COVID Cover-Up,” the COVID-19 pandemic, which killed millions of people, was the result of Anthony Fauci’s decision to fund dangerous gain-of-function research in China — research that was officially banned in the U.S. at the time and at bare minimum should have been done with U.S. oversight but wasn’t.

Adding insult to injury, Fauci personally profited from the disaster to the tune of about $5 million. “Congress was misled by Anthony Fauci,” Paul told now-independent journalist Tucker Carlson. “In the end, he deserves to be in prison.”

New Evidence Strongly Indicates SARS-CoV-2 Was Created

In a January 25, 2024, article1 in the City Journal, science writer, editor and author Nicholas Wade details new evidence2 obtained by U.S. Right to Know (USRTK) that further strengthens the theory that SARS-CoV-2 was indeed made in a lab.3

As noted by Wade, that’s the key reason why no one, despite massive testing efforts, has been able to find SARS-CoV-2 in any wild animal, bats or otherwise. It never existed in the natural world, only in the lab.

The newly-obtained documents include what amounts to a recipe for “assembling SARS-type viruses from six synthetic pieces of DNA designed to be a consensus sequence — the genetically most infectious form — of viruses related to SARS1, the bat virus that caused the minor epidemic of 2002,” Wade writes. As it turns out, SARS-CoV-2 has this exact six-section structure.

The documents also show that “American scientists planned to work with the Wuhan Institute of Virology to engineer novel coronaviruses with the features of SARS-CoV-2 the year before the virus emerged from that city,” USRTK reporter Emily Kopp writes.4

The DEFUSE Proposal Provides the Recipe

In March 2018, the EcoHealth Alliance, led by Peter Daszak, applied for a $14.2 million grant to conduct gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses in research labs in California, North Carolina, New York, Wisconsin, Singapore and Wuhan. The proposal, dubbed “Project DEFUSE,” describes how scientists would:5

  • Insert furin cleavage sites at the S1/S2 junction of the spike protein
  • Assemble synthetic viruses in six segments
  • Identify coronaviruses that were no more than 25% different from SARS1
  • Select for receptor binding domains adept at infecting human ACE2 receptors

SARS-CoV-2 Matches DEFUSE Research Parameters

As explained by Kopp,6 SARS-CoV-2 matches these research parameters to the T. It has a furin cleavage site in the spike protein at the S1/S2 junction, and its genome can be divided into six evenly spaced strings of DNA using restriction enzymes called BsaI and BsmBI. This even spacing is unlikely to occur in the genomes of natural viruses.

The reason scientists splice viruses together using evenly spaced DNA pieces is because it’s easier to manipulate. It allows them to synthesize the individual pieces chemically and then string them together to create a complete genome.

This telltale synthetic “fingerprint,” found in the genome of SARS-CoV-2, was detailed in a 2022 preprint by Bruttel et. al.7 As noted by Wade,8 the bottom line is that “if your virus has evenly spaced recognition sites, it’s a pretty good bet that it was made in a lab.” As it turns out, the DEFUSE draft proposal even included an order form for BsmBI — a fact highlighted by Bruttel in a Twitter/X post.9

The genomic variations of SARS-CoV-2’s are also within the 25% range indicated in the proposal, and its receptor binding domains were optimized for human ACE2 receptors from the start, which is what allowed it to spread like wildfire. Wade writes:10

“Discovery of the new recipe certainly strengthens the possibility that the regular spacing of BsaI and BsmBI recognition sites in SARS2 is the signature of synthetic origin.

Indeed, Richard H. Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University who had called the 2022 paper ‘noteworthy … but not decisive,’ now says that the evidence in the new documents ‘elevates the evidence provided by the genome sequence from the level of noteworthy to the level of a smoking gun.’”

Matt Ridley, coauthor of “Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19” agrees, noting that all of the novel features of SARS-CoV-2 are explained by the proposed research methods detailed in the DEFUSE documents.

“Game over.” Ridley wrote.11 “The latest revelations provide precise confirmation that all the many suspicious features of SARS-CoV-2 which imply it was man made were set out in exhaustive detail in the DEFUSE proposal to which Wuhan Institute of Virology was a partner.”

EcoHealth Was Well Aware of Pandemic Risks

According to the DEFUSE draft USRTK obtained, the plan was to synthesize anywhere from eight to 16 strains of SARS-type bat viruses with human spillover potential, in order to create a vaccine that would then be used on bats in regions where there is military activity.

Importantly, EcoHealth and the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) were well aware of the potential that this research could spark a human pandemic. A planning memo contains a note stating, “We MUST make it clear in proposal that our approach won’t drive evolution the wrong way, e.g. drive evolution of more virulent strain that then becomes pandemic.”12

At present, it would appear that’s exactly what happened. A synthetic virus was concocted, and somehow escaped from the WIV. Whether it was intentional or not is another matter. Either way, the moral of the story is that gain-of-function research poses enormous risks to public health, and if pandemic risk exists, then the research probably shouldn’t be allowed.

Documents Show Deceptive Practices to Gain Grants

Another thing these new documents reveal is how Daszak used misdirection in an effort to deceive the U.S. government about where this obviously risky research would be conducted. While he had every intention of having much of the work done at the WIV, he downplayed the role of the Chinese researchers and made it seem as though the research would be conducted in the U.S.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) ultimately rejected13 the proposal due to “significant weaknesses,” including the fact that the proposal lacked any kind of risk assessment and risk mitigation plan. Whether someone else provided the funding, and if so, who, remains an open question. As reported by Wade:14

“The DEFUSE proposal was authored by Peter Daszak, head of the EcoHealth Alliance in New York, with partners including Shi Zhengli of the Wuhan Institute of Virology and Ralph Baric of the University of North Carolina …

Some observers believe that when DARPA declined to fund the project, the Chinese members of the group may have decided to find their own financing and go ahead unilaterally. This is plausible, as Baric and Shi were collaborators but also rivals. With Baric blocked for lack of DARPA funds, Shi may have seen the chance to race ahead if she could acquire funds from Chinese sources.

Daszak, the project leader, had planned in any case to have much of the work undertaken by Shi’s team in Wuhan, even though it meant deceiving the Defense Department into thinking the bulk of the research would be done by Baric in the United States.

In a note found in the new documents, Daszak wrote, ‘If we win this contract, I do not propose that all of this work will necessarily be conducted by Ralph, but I do want to stress the US side of this proposal so that DARPA are comfortable with our team. Once we get the funds, we can then allocate who does what exact work, and I believe that a lot of these assays can be done in Wuhan.’

Daszak is a research manager, not a virologist, and perhaps did not fully understand the consequences of this decision. The DEFUSE project, if undertaken by Baric, would have gone forward in the second-highest level of safety conditions, known as BSL-3, because Baric believed that the manipulation of SARS-related viruses was dangerous work and did his research in a BSL-3 lab.

The Chinese were less impressed with the dangers. Shi worked on SARS-related viruses mostly in BSL-2 labs, which have minimal safety requirements, though she did test the viruses on humanized mice under BSL-3 conditions.

When SARS2 first appeared in the world, it had all the unique properties that would be expected of a virus made according to the DEFUSE recipe. Instead of slowly evolving the ability to attack human cells, as natural viruses must do when they jump from animals to humans, SARS2 was immediately infectious to people, possibly because it had already been adapted in humanized laboratory mice to the human cell receptors …

Despite intensive search, no precursors for SARS2 have been found in the natural world. Given the 2018 date of the DEFUSE proposal, the researchers in Wuhan could have synthesized the virus by 2019, accounting perfectly for the otherwise unexplained timing of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as its place of origin. It all fits.”

Lessons From the Great COVID Cover-Up

In a November 1, 2023, article, Sen. Paul reviewed what we have learned from “the great COVID cover-up”:15

“The COVID cover-up began in China. But in a way we make too big a deal of that. No one should be surprised that a totalitarian government run by the Chinese Communist Party would seek to cover up its responsibility for a worldwide pandemic. What was mind-jarring — and what we should focus our attention on — is the cover-up in our own country spearheaded by Dr. Anthony Fauci and his fellow public health bureaucrats.

And they might have gotten away with their deception if a federal judge hadn’t ordered their emails released. In brief, these emails reveal that at the same time Dr. Fauci and other public health ‘experts’ were publicly disavowing the idea that the COVID virus originated with a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, they were in general agreement among themselves that that was likely what had happened. So why hide the fact?”

According to Paul, Fauci and his collaborators chose to hide the truth because the truth would reveal their potentially criminal actions. As director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Fauci had been funding risky gain-of-function research at the WIV — a substandard lab in terms of safety.

Moreover, he allowed this research to move forward even though there was a moratorium on gain-of-function research in the U.S. The moratorium was put in place for the very reason that experts feared the risk of creating a human pandemic was too high.

Is Fauci Hiding a Guilty Conscience?

In hindsight, they were correct, and if SARS-CoV-2 was admitted to be a manmade virus leaked from a lab, the only rational response would be to hold the responsible parties accountable and shut this kind of research down for good. No doubt, this prospect would have terrified Fauci and everyone else involved.

According to Paul, that Fauci’s conscience was keeping him awake can be seen in the fact that he was sending emails in the middle of the night in the early days of the pandemic instead of being snugly tucked in his bed. One 3 a.m. email was sent to Robert Kadlec, then-Secretary for Preparedness and Response at Health and Human Services.

“This just came out today. Gives a balanced view,” Fauci wrote. Attached was a Science article arguing for a zoonotic origin of the virus and discrediting the lab leak theory.

“When this email came to light, I was initially puzzled about its timing and urgency,” Paul writes. “But then I learned that one of Kadlec’s duties was to chair the committee responsible for screening gain-of-function proposals for safety purposes — and that the Wuhan coronavirus research proposal never came before his committee!”

In other words, Paul believes Fauci sent this email to Kadlec to hide the fact that he’d OK’d gain-of-function research that should have ended up on Kadlec’s desk for a safety review, but didn’t.

Behavior Befitting a Conspiracy

Other behaviors also suggest Fauci and collaborators were panicking over the possibility that COVID might be traced back to their own activities. Paul writes:

“Jeremy Farrar, the Anthony Fauci of the UK, told his brother that in the early stages of the pandemic, ‘a few scientists, including me, were beginning to suspect this might be a lab accident.’

Farrar writes in his book Spike: ‘During that period, I would do things I had never done before: acquire a burner phone, hold clandestine meetings, keep difficult secrets.’

Indeed, many Western bureaucrats, especially in the U.S., began using various forms of communication to shield their messages from future records requests. We have an email from one of Fauci’s assistants instructing other government employees to avoid using government email addresses. Which, by the way, is a crime.”

And then there are the papers published in scientific journals “debunking” — without presenting a shred of evidence — the idea that SARS-CoV-2 might be manmade, and condemning “conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin.” Upon deeper investigation, they too have been linked to key culprits who have a strong incentive to hide the truth, including Fauci.

We Must Put an End to Gain-of-Function Research

As noted by Paul, the number of scientists worrying about another lab leak with far more dire consequences is growing:16

“With COVID, the mortality rate was far less than one percent. Experiments are now being carried out with viruses that have the potential for mortality rates between 15 and 50 percent. In 2021, MIT biochemist Kevin Esvelt wrote:

‘Once we consider the possibility of misuse [of gain-of-function research], let alone creative misuse, such research looks like a gamble that civilization can’t afford to risk … I implore every scientist, funder, and nation working in this field: Please stop.

No more trying to discover or make pandemic-capable viruses, enhance their virulence, or assemble them more easily. No more attempting to learn which components allow viruses to efficiently infect or replicate within human cells, or to devise inheritable ways to evade immunity. No more experiments likely to disseminate blueprints for plagues.’

The potential for disaster cannot be overstated. Right now, people can order synthetic DNA on the internet, and if they know what they’re doing, they can make the polio virus, among many others …

The required information is publicly available due to taxpayer-funded initiatives to identify all the viruses in the world. With the support of people like Peter Daszak and Bill Gates, the U.S. has been the top international funder of pandemic virus identification for decades.

This should give us pause: these programs involve digging rare viruses out of caves where humans might never encounter them and transporting them to major metropolitan areas, manipulating viruses to make them more dangerous and transmissible, and publishing the resulting knowledge to the world.

Even if the goal is preventing future pandemics, the risk-benefit ratio doesn’t add up. While advocates for identifying the world’s viruses argue that the knowledge gained will aid in developing vaccines, decades of virus identification have been fruitless, as no human vaccine has been developed in advance of a human epidemic.

If we continue down this path, Esvelt believes that ‘deliberate pandemics’ will kill ‘many more people than identification could save.’ To think that we can prevent future pandemics, even as we continue to seek, catalog, and manipulate dangerous viruses, is the height of hubris.

Over the last few years, public health ‘experts’ were wrong about almost everything. If we are to avoid these kinds of catastrophes in the future, we must reform government and rein in out-of-control scientists and their enablers.”

I couldn’t agree more. We need to put an end to gain-of-function research for the safety of humanity, and not allow greed or sheer scientific curiosity lead to the creation of a pathogen that might wipe out humanity.

The 2022 spending bill contains a directive to the secretary of Health and Human Services on page 3,354 to “not fund research conducted by a foreign entity at a facility located in a country of concern … involving pathogens of pandemic potential or biological agents or toxins.”17

This is a step in the right direction, but as noted by Paul, “Americans and their representatives must watch carefully to see whether our public health agencies attempt to sidestep it.”

To that end, a Gain-of-Function Reform Group is now recommending that gain-of-function experiments that confer “efficient human transmissibility” on a pathogen ought to be regulated. Doing so would “explicitly stop bureaucrats like Fauci from dancing around the gain-of-function definition and looking the other way as researchers create viruses that spread more easily in humans,” Paul writes.

At present, gain-of-function research is allowed provided it’s done with the intention of creating a vaccine, which is a logical fallacy. We’ve never been able to preemptively construct a pathogen that later shows up through natural evolution.

No, we’re creating novel pathogens that don’t exist in nature and then develop vaccines against those. In other words, we’re creating bioweapons and antidotes to those bioweapons, and it needs to stop. For that to happen, the public needs to start “making noise” so that our elected representatives begin to realize that we will not allow this issue to be ignored.

Fuel Your Body With Color: A New Guide to Healthy Eating

Feb. 16, 2024 – When it comes to your diet, your plate is important. Experts say it should include a healthy protein, whole grains, vegetables, and fruit. But rather than ration those ingredients, it might be easier – and healthier – to mix and match colors.

Not only does this rainbow-driven strategy fuel the body for its best performance, but it might help it prevent diseases or lower disease risk. By shifting the perspective from the plate to the rainbow, we start to understand that variety really IS the key to life.

“Our diet should ideally be a diverse combination of foods that allow certain compounds in foods to interact with one another as well as with systems in the body to produce health benefits,” said Christopher Browne, a doctor of chiropractic and director of human nutrition and functional medicine at the University of Western States in Portland, OR.

But not every type of food provides these benefits, especially “ultra-processed food, which has been the death knell of health in North Americans,” said Andrea Boggild, MD, medical director of the Tropical Disease Unit at Toronto General Hospital, and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Toronto.

Knowing which fruits and vegetables may provide the greatest benefits is just as important to ensuring there’s always some room for tasty combinations to match palates. The rainbow way is not about restriction but rather a predominance of whole, plant-based foods along with a few items that maintain what Browne referred to as the “sensory experience of food, along with its social and cultural aspects.”

All it takes is going back to the basics and making sure that the plate contains all of the major plant colors: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue-purple.

Red

Think beets, strawberries, cherries, and red bell peppers. These foods are rich in antioxidants and contain nutrients that help the body fight inflammation and maintain a healthy immune response. But don’t forget tomatoes, which researchers have recently discovered may be able to fight infectious bacteria responsible for many food-borne illnesses. Jeongmin Song, PhD, a researcher in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, NY, said though the evidence is early, findings showed that fresh tomato juice appears to kill salmonella and E. coli, both of which affect the gut and urinary tract. “The implication was that it’s possible that eating fresh vegetables and fruits will help eliminate bacteria,” she said.

Orange

Like their red cousins, orange plants and vegetables share substances known as carotenoids that are not only responsible for their deep pigmentation, but also appear to play an important role in hormone regulation and reproductive health. These benefits are linked to their strong antioxidant activity, especially in the ovaries. Examples include carrots, yams, persimmons, oranges, apricots, mangoes, and butternut squash. Browne said some research suggests that eating more orange fruits may also potentially delay the start of menopause.

Yellow

Anything but mellow, yellow fruits and vegetables are essential for keeping the gut running smoothly, help to offset extremes in blood sugar when consumed with starchy foods, and also contain powerful antioxidants. Golden delicious apples, Asian pears, lemons, bananas, and pineapples fall into this category. But don’t forget ginger, a flowering plant with a root that packs a punch when it comes to reducing nausea and helping food move through the digestive tract and out of the stomach. Keep in mind that “timing can be crucial,” said Browne. “Some people tolerate things fine with food in their stomach that they wouldn’t tolerate on an empty stomach,” he explained, referring specifically to yellow foods that are particularly acidic, like citrus fruit.

Green

Nothing shouts “plant” more than green. A star of the plate, foods like leafy greens (spinach, chard, collards, kale, and other lettuces), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts), artichokes, snow peas, and fruits like pears and green apples are powerful antioxidants that have been linked directly to heart health. “Vascular health benefits include reducing blood pressure and controlling the expression of genes that promote inflammation,” Browne said. Peppers, especially hot peppers, are especially known for their anti-inflammatory properties. But there is one special standout in the green category: avocados. “Avocados are an amazing source of many of the micronutrients we need every day,” said Kathleen Holton, PhD, MPH, a nutritional neuroscientist and provost associate professor at American University in Washington, DC.

Blue-Purple

It’s ironic that the color blue is often associated with sadness. Not only are blue and purple fruits and vegetables powerful antioxidants, but they have been shown to balance mood, boost learning ability, and positively affect the nervous system. “There’s great research on blueberries and cognitive function,” Holton said. “But we can do even more if those blueberries are part of a healthy diet that removes exposure to certain food additives that cause negative effects.” In addition to blueberries, grapes are a great source of “phytonutrients,” especially naturally occurring substances like polyphenols, which boost their antioxidant properties. “We’re surprised that grapes (red, concord) in particular have many antimicrobial properties to fight infection,” said Song, noting that these power players are the next candidates for laboratory studies. Other important blue-purple foods include blackberries, black raspberries, boysenberries, figs, plums, eggplant, purple cabbage, and purple cauliflower.

Garlic: A Superstar

One way to determine the nutrient value of different fruits and vegetables is the vibrancy of their color. But it turns out that white plays a starring role on the rainbow plate. “If you were going to call something a superfood, garlic would be my number one choice,” Holton said. “Garlic has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and anticancer properties,” she said, “so garlic (and onions) become very flavorful, beautiful additions that are very nutrient-dense when people are cooking.” (Not to mention, garlic and onions are drivers of great flavor).

The gold at the end of the rainbow is wealth, but not in the most common sense of the word. The best advice is to stop counting calories and quantities and ensure that you are putting multicolored foods into your diet every day.

“Diet is all about these different important chemicals that our body needs to have to function optimally,” Holton noted. “The power comes when we put them all together.”

Heart Risks After Pregnancy-Related High Blood Pressure in Latinas

Monica Cantu and her husband were overjoyed to learn they were expecting twins, a boy and a girl.

The couple couldn’t wait to meet their babies. At a doctor’s appointment, Cantu learned her baby boy was measuring small. At 23 weeks, doctors noticed something wrong with the baby’s umbilical cord. Blood wasn’t flowing properly through the cord.

Doctors warned Cantu to expect the worst. But she held out hope for two healthy babies.

A couple of weeks later, Cantu felt a strange tingling and numbness in her face. She and her husband rushed to the hospital. Tests showed her liver enzymes were elevated. Cantu’s blood pressure was high at first, but a second reading was normal, she says.

When she didn’t improve after 2 days, doctors prepared Cantu for an emergency delivery. She was only 25 weeks along.

“Panic set in,” says Cantu, who lives in Katy, TX.  “I thought, ‘These babies cannot come right now!’ My son was being estimated at just 12 ounces.”

Cantu’s baby girl, Amelia, was born strong and screaming, she recalls. But baby Roman entered the world quietly. He clung to life but died 2 days later.

Tests done during the ordeal revealed Cantu’s diagnosis: severe preeclampsia. High blood pressure is a defining feature of this pregnancy complication. Elevated liver enzymes and other signs of organ damage also are symptoms.

“Losing my son was devastating,” Cantu says. “I was left with so many questions. I carried so much guilt, like my body had failed me.”

High blood pressure during pregnancy is a growing problem for expectant moms across the U.S. and especially for Latinas.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), which include preeclampsia and gestational hypertension, more than doubled from 2007 to 2019 in the U.S., according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Rates went up for all women, but Latina/Hispanic women experienced the sharpest rise, with more than 60 cases per 1,000 live births.

Even more concerning, new data link heart irregularities in older Hispanic women to high blood pressure they had years earlier while pregnant.

“There are significant changes in cardiac structure and function in Latina women who had high blood pressure during pregnancy, meaning their hearts have abnormalities,” says Odayme Quesada, MD, medical director for The Christ Hospital Women’s Heart Center in Cincinnati and lead author of the study, published in Hypertension.

The findings are important because such differences can predict cardiovascular events later in life, such as heart failure and even death, Quesada explains.

For the study, researchers analyzed the hearts of 5,168 Hispanic/Latina women with past pregnancies whose average age was about 60. Results revealed that prior HDP was connected with changes in how the heart contracts and relaxes, increased thickness of the heart wall, and higher rates of abnormal geometry in the heart’s left ventricle.

The study helps answer why women with hypertension during pregnancy often develop future heart problems, Quesada says. Up to 20% of women with HDP will develop high blood pressure 6 months after giving birth, and their lifetime risk of chronic hypertension rises tenfold, studies show.

“Prior to our study, the question was: Do abnormalities in the structure and function of the heart develop because of the HDP itself or because many of the women who have HDP then go on to develop chronic high blood pressure?” she says. “Our study helps fill in the gaps.”

During her pregnancy, Cantu’s blood pressure was sometimes high at prenatal visits but then would drop.

The fluctuation was explained away as “white coat syndrome,” she says. The term refers to anxiety or nervousness at doctor visits that can cause blood pressure to rise. Other symptoms she reported to doctors, such as extreme itching and headaches, were waved away as typical pregnancy signs.

At the time, Cantu says she didn’t know much about preeclampsia. She’d heard the term before but didn’t know how serious it is. None of her family members had experienced the complication.

Lack of awareness may be one reason HDP is rising faster in Latina women. Studies show Hispanic adults in the U.S. have the lowest rates of hypertension awareness and treatment compared with White, Black, and Asian adults.

Latinos are also less likely to have their hypertension under control, says Adriana Maldonado, PhD, assistant professor at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona.

Reasons behind poor hypertension control are complex, says Maldonado, lead author of a recent study about hypertension management among Latinos. Some top obstacles include lack of time to engage in lifestyle modifications, health insurance and financial constraints, and language barriers when interacting with health care providers. Limited access to health care services, culturally rich diets, and hesitancy to seek preventative care are also factors.

Social determinants of health largely explain the disparities, Maldonado says. “That is, the documented low rates of uncontrolled hypertension among Latinos are the result of the intersection of environmental, social, economic, and interpersonal factors.”

Lowering your risk of developing hypertension while pregnant and taking action to control your blood pressure after pregnancy is key, Maldonado and Quesada say. Prevention tips include:

Adopt a heart-healthy diet. An eating style beneficial to your heart can decrease your hypertension risk, Maldonado says. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan is one option. DASH foods are rich in calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The plan also emphasizes vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

Make exercise a priority. Incorporating exercise into your lifestyle is important, Quesada says. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of  physical activity a week.

Monitor your blood pressure. If you have a history of hypertension during pregnancy, keep a close eye on your blood pressure after delivery, Quesada advises. It’s a good idea to own your own blood pressure cuff and monitor your pressure at home, and use it at least monthly.

See your doctor regularly. A history of HDP means you should be visiting your doctor at least once a year to assess your cardiovascular risk. HDP is considered a risk enhancer and is factored into your assessment, Quesada says.

Despite her tragic experience, Cantu knew she wanted more children. But she made sure her next pregnancy was different.

Cantu learned as much about preeclampsia as possible. She joined the nonprofit EndPreclampsia, a global support organization for patients with HDP. She read, researched, and networked with other women with similar experiences.

When a second pregnancy was confirmed, Cantu’s sister sent her a blood pressure monitor. Cantu checked her blood pressure at home, twice daily.

“This time around, I went into doctors’ appointments a lot more knowledgeable,” she said. “I was able to ask more questions. I had more confidence.”

Fortunately, Cantu’s preeclampsia didn’t return during her second pregnancy. In late 2023, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, now 5 months old. Big sister Amelia, 3, is now a bubbly preschooler.

Cantu’s strongest advice for other Latinas is to become educated about HDP and to advocate for yourself at medical visits.

“Inform yourself as much as you can,” she said. “Yes, you should trust your doctor, but it should not be a blind trust. Ask questions. Request tests if necessary. If something doesn’t feel right, advocate for yourself.”

Age-Friendly Health Care: A New Approach

America’s senior population has grown by 34.2% in the last 10 years, and today about 54 million Americans are 65-plus.

If you’re in this group, you may take four or more medications, see as many as five doctors each year, and have at least one chronic health condition. You may also feel that your doctors and nurses often don’t listen to your preferences or fully include you in decisions about your own care.

According to a 2015 Journal of General Internal Medicine study of more than 16,000 older adults, one in five said they experienced age discrimination from their doctors or during hospital visits. Almost 6% of older adults said they faced age discrimination frequently, and their health worsened over the next 4 years.

“We must recognize that the way we manage the health care of elderly patients is not the same as how we manage 30- or 40-year-olds. We are not talking to our patients enough about what matters to them. We are getting better at managing their medications, but we don’t do as well at taking them off their medications. We don’t focus enough on their risk of falls,” says John Whyte, MD, WebMD’s chief medical officer.

Whyte recently played a key role in developing Age-Friendly Health Systems (AFHS), a new approach to care for older adults developed by the John A. Hartford Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, in partnership with the American Hospital Association and the Catholic Health Association of the United States. Doctors, nurses, and other health care providers who treat older people need to be better listeners, he says. “We need to ask what matters to our older patients. It’s a simple question, but it needs to be asked in an explicit way by each physician. We need to change how we approach treatment of our elderly patients.”

Could health care focus on your personal preferences and health goals as you age, not just what your doctor thinks is best for you or your test results? AFHS recommends that doctors and nurses plan care for older adults based on what they or their caregivers value most. Every medical visit or decision should cover the 4Ms, four building blocks of high-quality care:

  • What matters, so older adults set their personal lifestyle and health goals, and health care professionals plan their treatment with these goals in mind
  • Medications they take for any condition, including whether they need each drug and if any side effects interfere with doing what matters to them
  • Mobility, so they can move safely, function in their daily life, and do what matters to them
  • Mentation, to prevent or diagnose, treat, and manage memory loss, dementia, and/or depression

Many health care systems, such as the 1,200 CVS MinuteClinics, include the 4Ms in every appointment with an older adult, says John A. Hartford Foundation President Terry Fulmer, PhD. Your doctor or nurse may ask you about your personal goals, values, and preferences, but these questions can be hard for some older people to answer.

“If I say to an older patient, ‘What are your goals?’ They may say, ‘You’re the nurse, don’t you know?’” Some older people may think they need to defer to their doctor or nurse during care, and let them make all the decisions, Fulmer says.

“We need to make people comfortable with this question of what matters to you. Very often, it’s hard to get that conversation started. You might say, ‘I want to talk with you about my mobility, my mood, and my medications, all based on what matters to me.’ That’s a very robust conversation.”

How do doctors and nurses feel about an age-friendly approach to care when they treat older people?

Fulmer and Whyte are among the co-authors of a new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. The results show most primary care providers believe they should approach care for older patients differently and consider age when they make treatment decisions, but don’t always include the 4Ms in care.

The study is based on a survey of 1,684 primary health care providers randomly selected from the Medscape database during the fall of 2020. Responders included 575 doctors, 613 nurse practitioners (NPs), and 496 physician assistants (PAs).

They were asked for their opinions on age-friendly care or the 4Ms, and how they care for their older patients. While more than 90% of providers agreed that older patients “require a different approach to care than younger patients,” only 50% of doctors and PAs and 69% of NPs said they always consider a patient’s age in routine care. Only 36% of the surveyed doctors said they ask their older patients what matters to them.

High-risk medications for older people include drugs that may cause harmful side effects or interact with other drugs, says Marcus R. Escobedo, vice president of communications at the John A. Hartford Foundation and a study co-author.

Many drugs to treat anxiety, insomnia, or pain can have side effects that lower an older person’s quality of life or are even unsafe for them, he says. Antipsychotic drugs often prescribed for older people with dementia can make them drowsy and increase the risk of falls, for example.

As we get older, our body and metabolism change, Escobedo says, so there may be medications that are not right for older adults that are too often still prescribed. “They may be taking too many medications overall. If you have lots of different providers, or if you go into the hospital, you may be prescribed medications. Then, you go home, and these drugs are not stopped.”

While 84% of doctors said they review older patients’ use of high-risk medications and screen for depression, only 78% said they take their patients off or lower their dose of high-risk meds or avoid using these drugs at all.

“If older adults do recognize possible side effects from their medications, are we listening to them? They may say something like, ‘I am just feeling off,’” Fulmer says. That’s why one of the 4Ms is to review your meds and see if any need to be changed. “We need to start that conversation about your medications with what matters to you.”

The AFHS framework urges doctors and nurses to ensure that older patients can move safely so they can do what matters to them. Your health care provider may prescribe physical therapy or exercises to help you stay mobile.

“One of the best ways to prevent falls is to encourage older people to do physical activity and just some movement. We help them build strength and balance. That will help you be more confident as you move,” Escobedo says.

The survey found that 73% of doctors, 82% of NPs, and 76% of PAs said they always screen older patients for limits on how well they can get around. However, only 56% of doctors, 61% of NPs, and 56% of PAs said they “ensure early, frequent, and safe mobility” when they treat older people.

Health care providers may screen older people for mobility problems, but they need to do more to help them move better and prevent falls, Fulmer says.

“My older patients and I often talk about pre-habilitation. That’s working to get strong before you have an event” like a fall that causes a fracture, she says. “People want control over their life. You can work with your physical therapist to get ahead of your challenges. We can say, ‘Let’s do some strength training. You can take charge of your mobility.’”

Mentation is another of the 4Ms. Only 60% of doctors, 70% of NPs, and 67% of PAs surveyed said they refer their older patients who test positive for cognitive impairment, or having some problems with memory or making decisions, for more tests and treatment for their symptoms.

Health care visits are often as little as 10 minutes long, so doctors and nurses need to ask older people how they feel and what activities they are able to do, like going to the movies, or if they can walk more than one block, Fulmer says.

The survey found that 43% of doctors, 37% of NPs, and 38% of PAs agreed that “it is up to the patient to tell me what their needs are.” Fulmer believes providers need to ask these questions and listen more carefully to their older patients’ responses.

“It’s a conversation: ‘What is front and center for you right now?’ We need to give older people a voice. Let them start this conversation,” she says. The survey’s results suggest that health care providers need more training in how to put older adults’ needs front and center in their care.

Future generations will benefit from a more seamless health system where all your medications, health conditions, and, most importantly, personal goals and preferences are all in your chart, she says. “Good care for older adults is usually good care for everybody.”

Does Creatine Make You Bloated | Dietary Supplements | Credihealth

Well, creatine is very popular nowadays as a dietary supplement. Fitness enthusiasts and athletes for excellent muscle strength and performance majorly use it. Though it offers substantial safety value, some people experience bloating, especially in the starting stage, also called the loading phase.Understanding the potential factors contributing to creatine bloat can help get the complete details on “Do creatine make you bloated?” Let us dive into this article and first learn what creatine and creatine bloating is, how it feels, how to manage it, and more!

What Is Creatine And How It Works?

Creatine is a natural amino acid produced in the pancreas, liver, and kidneys. After its production, it gets stored in the brain and muscle tissues as creatine phosphate. On average, the pancreas, kidney, and liver produce 1 to 2 grams of creatine daily, generally stored in skeletal muscles. However, you can also get it from animal-derived foods such as fish, meat, and supplements. Its primary role is to supply energy to the muscles during intense physical activities. Also, research says it helps manage age-related deficiencies in skeletal muscles, bone, and brain.

How does it work? As creatine is stored in the form of creatine phosphate, it constantly replenishes Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), an organic compound that carries energy in the body cells. During intense workouts or physical activities, ATP provides power to the muscles. As naturally stored creatine level is limited, their effects decrease as the duration of time spent performing exercises increases. Some people consume only plant-based foodstuffs and show lower creatine levels. Here, taking a creatine supplement can increase the creatine value in the body and provide more energy to fuel the ATP, thus improving your fitness and health. Research shows that consuming 20 g of creatine supplement daily for 5-7 days can increase muscle strength and performance by 5-15%. This makes it popular among gym enthusiasts and athletes.

Does Creatine Make You Bloated?

Many people wonder if creatine causes bloating. Well, not everyone but some users experience bloating after having creatine supplements. It usually happens a few days after the starting stage, also famous as the “loading phase.” The reason behind creatine bloat is that it does not dissolve well in the body when taken in high amounts. The stomach draws more water to get it appropriately dissolved, which causes bloating.

Creatine bloating is not an increase in body fat. It is a creatine weight gain, which is a sign that implies the supplement is showing some effects in your body. Once creatine bloating declines, your body weight comes to standard. You can stick to lower creatine intake at the starting stage to reduce the chances of discomfort due to bloating. Also, make sure you buy high-quality creatine supplements for promising results.

Let us proceed and discuss in detail what creatine bloating is and how it occurs.

What Is Creatine Bloating And How Does It Feel?

Creatine bloating is a phenomenon that highly refers to increased creatine water retention after taking creatine supplements. The muscles hold water and creatine in significant volume, leading to an increase in bloating and total body water, temporarily. Most probably, creatine bloating happens during the loading phase as we have discussed above. It occurs when users take a high amount of creatine, around 20-25 gms, consecutively for 5-7 days. Consuming this dose leads to a surprising increase in muscle mass and water retention, causing your stomach to bloat. After the loading phase, keeping an optimal muscle mass is essential, so you can lower the intake and use 3-5 grams as a maintenance dose.

When it comes to how creatine bloating makes you feel, it is all about the uneasy fullness in the abdominal area. Many users complain about the puffy feeling and excess gas, which can cause discomfort. However, creatine bloating symptoms are generally mild. Creatine water retention can temporarily increase body weight, but it is not a real weight gain. It is just due to the boost in fluid retention, causing this scale-up. The weight becomes normal once the bloating decreases after a few weeks.

How To Beat Creatine Bloating?

As you get the answer to your question, Does creatine make you bloated? if you are wondering how to avoid bloating. Though you can opt for several approaches, it will not work for everyone. If your bloating stays for many days, consulting a doctor will be ideal as they will help find the appropriate reason. Have a look at how to beat your bloating:

1. Choose The Right Dosage Amount

The dose is the biggest factor that has a significant role in the loading phase. In this initial stage, a high dose of creatine is consumed rather than a maintenance dose, which keeps the muscles flooded with the creatine. Typically, you need around 20 grams of creatine daily for 5 to 6 days to increase muscle saturation. After this phase, you can drop the dosage to the maintenance phase, about 3-5 grams daily. However, you can skip the loading phase and decide on the maintenance phase for 28 days using creatine monohydrate, which can also help achieve the same results.

2. Pick The Right Creatine Supplement

Several types of creatine are available in the market. Among them, the most commonly used one is creatine monohydrate. Other varieties of creatine with different compositions include creatine malate, creatine HCL, creatine citrate, and many more options. Many users suggest taking Kre-Alkalyn or buffered creatine monohydrate. A buffered creatine supplement is a blend of creatine and an alkalizing agent like magnesium glycerol phosphate, soda ash, or bicarbonate. These alkalizers help increase the pH levels of the creatine supplement and make them more essential. As a result, this reduces bloating, cramps, and any side effects related to traditional creatine supplements.

3. Opt For Good Lifestyle Choices

Good lifestyle choices can significantly show results by preventing the occurrence of creatine bloating. So, add a low-sodium diet to your everyday eating routine. A low-sodium diet means less salt, which is central to water retention. A food with less salt can help reduce creatine water retention, thus relieving the bloating. Moreover, you also need to drink plenty of water. This is because creatine bloating causes water retention in muscles and leads to dehydration, as there’s not enough water left for the rest of the body. So, consuming creatine supplements is recommended to have about 8 glasses of water in a day. A balanced hydration will help prevent uncontrollable muscle cramps like leg cramps. Nevertheless, when you decide to consume creatine supplements, make sure it is a high-end brand that delivers high-quality products that are effective and safe.

What Are The Potential Benefits Of Creatine?

Creatine benefits in several ways, helping fitness enthusiasts and athletes boost their muscle strength and performance. In this section, we have explained many benefits in detail:

1. Increases Muscle Mass and Strength

Typically, creatine stimulates the muscle proteins that help grow and strengthen the muscle fibers, increasing muscle mass and strength. When you perform resistance training exercises for muscle growth, creatine provides energy to the muscles through ATP. As the body does not store ATP in much amount, this supplement improves ATP levels and allows you to continue to exercise. In addition, creatine may boost satellite cell signaling, effectively supporting muscle growth and repair. Muscle protein synthesis occurs actively after a workout. So, research says that taking creatine supplements within 60 minutes of exercise helps increase the creatine levels in the target tissue.

2. Improves Exercise Performance

Creatine supplementation can improve the exercise performance of many fitness enthusiasts and athletes by increasing their muscle strength and endurance power. It is beneficial in high-intensity exercises, including sprinting and weight-lifting physical activities. One study shows increased muscle strength for leg press, bench press, and squat exercises after taking creatine for a workout. This significantly leads to improved progress in exercise performance. Another report has shown creatine’s natural ability to improve sprinting performance, which is a crucial part of multiple sports.

3. Enhances Brain Function

Though a significant portion of creatine is found in skeletal muscles, a small amount gets stored in the brain. According to one research, creatine supplementation supports brain health by improving cognitive function and mental fatigue, mainly when brain creatine levels are low. The reasons for low brain creatines are acute stressors(such as sleep deprivation or exercises) or chronic health conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, aging, depression, or mild traumatic brain injury. By taking creatine supplements, you can efficiently improve the functioning of your brain.

Conclusion

Well, creatine is the most popular supplement nowadays that can help you improve your muscle strength and performance. It can cause creatine bloating when taken in high doses during the loading phase. But, bloating can be avoidable by skipping the loading phase and only going for a maintenance dose. Keep in mind that many brands are available in the market; prefer to choose the high-end ones that deliver the most effective and safest supplement for your fitness and health.

Some Common Reasons Behind Sleeping Challenges

Most people struggle to fall asleep quickly for many reasons. Those include:

1. Poor Sleep Environment

An uncomfortable, warm room can disturb your sleep. Exposure of the body to heat increases wakefulness and prevents deep sleep. Moreover, noises in the bedroom might bother you by disrupting the circadian rhythms, keeping you awake the whole night. Sometimes, lights in the room at nighttime can disturb your body clock which regulates your alertness and sleep. So, use eye masks or blackout curtains to prevent unwanted light into your eyes. Avoid external noises by putting in a white noise machine.

2. Irregular Sleep Schedule

According to one study, irregular sleep schedules, like sleeping every night at different times, can confuse your body’s internal clock. This poor sleep pattern can make you unable to fall asleep at the right time. Scheduling an appropriate sleep pattern can help regulate the body’s internal clock. As the body adapts to the proper schedule, sleeping and waking up at the exact time becomes more accessible. 8-9 hours of sleep in a day is an optimal amount that is important for every adult.

3. Overexposure To Screen

Overusing mobile phones or any electronic devices when you’re about to sleep can impact the body’s internal clock. Using gadgets during nighttime can eat up your sleep. The emission of blue lights from electronic devices affects the release of hormones called “melatonins,” responsible for sleep and slow down the onset of sleep. So, better to turn off all gadgets as darkness stimulates the feeling of sleepiness. Research says melatonin is produced by the brain in response to darkness, helping you sleep peacefully.

4. Diet and Lifestyle Changes

Increased consumption of caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine before bedtime can hinder your ability to sleep. So, it is recommended to avoid consuming caffeinated drinks 6 hours before bed as their caffeine content can affect the efficiency and frequency of your sleep. In addition, drinking alcohol leads to disintegrated sleep. It’s because the excessive amount of alcohol doesn’t induce a deep sleep that makes a person feel revived in the morning time. Moreover, having alcohol before going to bed also causes dehydration, thus preventing you from falling asleep.

Sleeping Habits That Contribute To Good Quality Sleep

While techniques like the military method, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation can help make you sleep faster, some sleeping habits also play a significant role. The section below will guide you with all the sleeping strategies you can utilize to facilitate your sleep and wake up with freshness and great energy. By following the listed ways, you can know how to fall asleep in 10 seconds:

  • Do not stress about falling asleep. Just do yoga poses, meditation, and mindfulness practice. This relaxes the body and mind, allowing better and quicker sleep.

  • Stop looking at the wall clocks or mobile phones to check the time till you do not feel sleepy. Doing this can indirectly prevent the stress on your mind and make you sleep faster.

  • Practice to sleep and wake up at the exact time every day. This helps set your internal clock right and makes you sleep and wake up simultaneously.

  • Taking short naps in between the daytime can improve alertness and activeness. However, if you doze off for over 30 minutes, it can disturb your night sleep cycle.

  • Paying close attention to what you eat and when you eat before bedtime helps determine how to fall asleep instantly. Avoid heavy meals, making you feel full. Instead, opt for light meals that improve sleep. Remember to always eat on time!

  • Listen to music, chants, etc., as these help create a calming environment. So, always surround yourself with soft and soothing music.

  • Physical activities are essential because they make you fall asleep quickly. Regular exercising drains your body and, hence, improves your sleep.

Conclusion

If sleep is stressing you, it might be due to some everyday activities, sleeping habits, or environment. However, sometimes, it may still be difficult for you to sleep even if you’ve all these factors under control. Well, practicing breathing and relaxation methods can help you know how to go to sleep fast in 10 seconds. These techniques focus on muscles and breathing patterns instead of external elements. Even if you find it too hard to sleep after trying all the mentioned methods, consult the licensed doctors and get effective treatment.

Is Castor Oil Good To Put In Your Belly Button?

Yes, it is good to put castor oil in your belly button because of its effective chemical composition. According to research, castor oil contains 90% ricinoleic acid, which is a critical component that makes it most useful. Typically, ricinoleic acid moisturizes and makes the skin smooth and also cures acne and uneven skin. It also prevents inflammation, fights against fungi and bacteria, and strengthens your immune system.

Moreover, other triglycerides and fatty acids such as oleic acid, stearic acid, and linoleic acid are also found in castor oil. These triglycerides help boost skin moisture and enhance barrier activity, making them most useful in treating dry skin conditions. These chemical effects of castor oil make it the most reliable oil for treating many health issues.

How Does Castor Oil In The Belly Button Get Absorbed?

When you put castor oil in your belly button, the skin absorbs all its active ingredients. The navel is the route to many blood vessels, making it a potent site for absorption. So, after the oil gets absorbed, it enters the bloodstream. As a result, it allows the oil to reach its target location in the body and treat health issues effectively.

Top Health Benefits Of Castor Oil In Belly Button

Here is Learn what castor oil in the belly button does when applied regularly for various health purposes. Science-backed benefits of castor oil in the belly button include:

1. Supports Digestive System

The application of castor oil in the belly button for constipation is effective due to its laxative effects. One research says it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) as a stimulative laxative. When it enters the intestines, it stimulates the smooth muscle contraction in the bowel. This eases the fast movement of the stool through the intestine and relieves constipation.

Moreover, castor oil has the potency to increase water level in the intestine, which leads to soft and easy pass of stools. Furthermore, the oil supports gut health in several ways. It encourages the growth of good bacteria, develops a favorable gut environment, and reduces inflammation. The results are better absorption of essential nutrients and improved overall gut health.

2. Helps Relieve Pain

Well, castor oil in the belly button benefits many women going through pain during their menstrual cycle. Putting the oil can help reduce inflammation and increase blood flow to the pelvic area. This, as a result, relieves pain associated with menstrual cramps.

Moreover, the potential to fight against inflammation and ease pain, makes castor oil most effective in treating muscle and joint pain. Applying the oil directly on your belly button helps relieve the severe pain and swelling due to muscle pulls, strains, or arthritis.

3. Promotes Skin Health

As castor oil is highly rich in fatty acids, it is a natural skin moisturizer. When the oil gets absorbed through the navel, it forms a layer that retains skin moisture, giving a smooth, plumpy feel. Also, it boosts the production of collagen and elastin. These two main fibers significantly reduce wrinkles, increase elasticity, and make skin healthy overall.

Most importantly, it is an excellent remedy to reduce stretch marks, which many women struggle with. Overstretching of the skin tissue leads to stretch marks. This happens often during weight changes, rapid growth, and pregnancy. Applying castor oil to the belly button may reduce these marks by improving the skin’s elasticity and lowering inflammation.

6. Keeps Navel Clean

Mostly, you always remember to clean all your body parts, but belly buttons are often forgotten. Is not that true? The navel is the most essential part of your body, and keeping it free from dirt and germs is necessary.

Regular cleaning protects the belly and stomach from any possible infection or problems. So, regularly clean it using castor oil. Dip a cotton swab in the oil and thoroughly wipe your belly button.

Side Effects Of Applying Castor Oil In Belly Button

While castor oil provides several health benefits when applied to the belly button, it also has some side effects:

  1. Skin Irritation: As castor oil is concentrated and potent, its application directly on the belly button can cause rashes, swelling, irritation, and redness. So, doing a patch test before using it is always recommended.
  2. Infection Risk: Typically, the belly button is the moist part that can carry bacteria. If you apply castor oil to the unclean or infected navel, it may worsen the infection and can promote new bacterial growth. Therefore, cleaning the belly button before applying the oil is essential.
  3. Allergic Reactions: Some people may experience allergic reactions to castor oil. After putting it in your belly button, if you see symptoms like swelling, difficulty breathing, and hives, immediately discontinue its use. It will be better to consult the medical professionals as soon as possible.
  4. Burning Sensation: Some people might experience a mild discomfort or burning sensation after putting castor oil on their belly button. If this happens, wiping the oil carefully using lukewarm water is better.
  5. Pregnancy Concerns: Castor oil has been used for several years during labor and childbirth. One research says that 93% of certified nurse-midwives used the oil to induce labor. However, no study shows if it is safe to use castor oil in the belly button while pregnant. So, always take the advice of your gynecologist before trying it.
  6. Potential Interactions With Medicines: Applying castor oil in your belly might interact with your medicines, primarily for skin issues. So, always seek medical advice before using it.
  7. Overuse Issues: Excessive use of castor oil in your navel might not give better results. So, do not overuse it, as it can cause skin sensitivity and other severe skin reactions.

How To Apply Castor Oil In Belly Button?

A few gentle steps to apply castor oil to the belly button can help you achieve better health and well-being:

  • Prepare the oil by using a cold-pressed castor oil for your navel. The cold-pressed oil does not undergo heat processing, which keeps all its nutrients intact. So, always look for organic and high-end brands to ensure the best results.
  • To apply the castor oil on your navel, take a quarter-sized dose of oil and then rub it with your palms and fingers. Warm oil easily gets absorbed and feels much better on the skin.
  • Next, gently massage the oil on the belly button and the surrounding area. Do note that, while massaging, use light force as it helps stimulate blood flow and ingestion.
  • Also, move your fingertips in the navel circle clockwise, easing quick absorption.
  • Rest for a few minutes and breathe deeply, easing the vagus nerve’s activation, thus relaxing your body.

Castor oil in the belly button before and after: Things to consider

Here are some key things to consider before and after applying castor oil to your belly button:

Before

  • Do a patch test for allergic reactions before wide-scale use.
  • Clean and dry the belly button to avoid infection since it is an area prone to bacteria.
  • Opt for cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil to avoid skin irritation.
  • Start with a small amount of oil to assess any discomfort.
  • Avoid using if pregnant or breastfeeding without medical approval.

After

  • Clean away any excess oil gently with a damp cloth.
  • Watch for signs of redness, itching, burning or rash which may indicate allergy.
  • Keep the area around the belly button clean and dry to prevent fungal infections.
  • Discontinue use if abdominal pain or severe nausea occurs.
  • Stay hydrated since castor oil may have a mild diuretic effect like lasix.
  • See your doctor promptly if you have any concerns with the practice.

Conclusion

Putting castor oil in your belly button has several health benefits to offer. Rich in ricinoleic acid helps prevent abdominal and joint pain and digestive, eye, and skin issues. Also, it strengthens immunity and reduces stress and anxiety. But always clean your hands before applying the oil. Also, do a patch test, as you might be allergic to it. The best idea is to consult the doctors if you want to use it and are unsure.

Normal everyday activities like grocery shopping or traffic jams can make you tense. You might find it hard to unplug from digital devices and streaming services in a 24/7 world. Work deadlines, handling the kids or dealing with a difficult relationship can get you down.

Many things — like finances, a chronic illness, caregiving, or a rocky relationship —  might be a strain.

“Stress is really how your body and brain respond to challenges, such as pressure at work, [handling] the pandemic, increasing family responsibility, other negative experiences that may impact and create stress,” says David Shurtleff, PhD, deputy director of the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the concerns around stress.

“We’re seeing a lot more anxiety and depression over the last year given the COVID situation,” Shurtleff says.

When you feel overwhelmed or can’t handle a situation, your body might respond in a bad way. The so-called “fight or flight” response kicks in to get you ready to run, and that creates stress.

“Experiencing short periods of stress is just fine, in fact, it’s even healthy,” says Jonathan C. Smith, PhD, a professor of psychology at Roosevelt University, founding director of the university’s Mindful Initiative, and a prolific author of books on relaxation practices.

“Living a stress-free life is unhealthy and dangerous. We need a little bit of challenge to keep us alive,” Smith says.

But too much stress isn’t good for you. Some situations, like the isolation you may have faced during the pandemic, for example, can cause ongoing stress, which, in turn, can bring on health problems.

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed by something like a global pandemic, but it’s also important to find ways to relax, Shurtleff says. He practices yoga about three times a week and uses a treadmill daily to help keep worries under control.

“Stress over time can really impact our bodies and our brains and lead to really devastating chronic conditions such as anxiety and depression,” he says.

However, a whole range of relaxation practices can help you power down and de-stress.

“There’s no one shoe that fits all,” Smith says. He points to “five or six” approaches based on scientific observation and experience that really do work for stress reduction. There are other therapies, too, that you might find helpful. You can do one at a time or you can practice some together.

This is one of the easiest stress reduction practices because you simply focus on your breathing.

Sit or lie down in a quiet place, take a deep breath through your nose and breathe out slowly through your mouth, or your nose if it feels better.

Texas psychiatrist Gregory Scott Brown, MD, suggests the 4-7-8 approach. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, then exhale for 8 seconds.

Deep breathing can help you calm down and relax, he says.

“When I’m talking to patients, I typically start with breath work because, again, we all breathe every single day, but many of us don’t realize that breath work, you know, done in a specific way, is medicine,” says Brown, who’s founder and director of the Center for Green Psychiatry in Austin, TX.

Mindfulness is an ancient form of meditation that promotes awareness of what’s happening in the moment.

It encourages you to focus on your body, your thoughts, and what’s going on around you.

Mantra meditation, on the other hand, is the opposite of mindfulness. In this practice, you place all your attention on a single target, like a mantra, a candle flame, or a phrase.

In both types of meditations, whenever your mind wanders — and it will Smith says — you simply re-focus.

It’s a brain skill, he says. In that in the first 2 weeks you won’t be able to do it very well. Your mind will constantly chatter and distract, and that’s normal, that happens.

But as you practice, you’ll get better at it.

In this technique, you focus on slowly tightening and relaxing muscle groups. You can practice it along with breathing exercises and guided imagery.

Find a comfortable place to sit or lay down, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Expand your stomach as you breathe in and contract it as you exhale.

You can either start with your head and face muscles and work your way down your body or you can start with your toes and work your way up. While you focus on each muscle group, tense and hold for about 5 seconds and relax for 30 seconds, then repeat.

“Tensing certain muscle groups while you’re combining breath work with that can, again, instill a sense of calm and relaxation,” Brown says.

You should talk to your doctor before trying progressive muscle relaxation if you have any problems such as muscle spasm, serious injuries, or chronic pain.

Imagine yourself lying on a sandy beach with a soft breeze gently stirring the warm air. Use your senses to smell the saltwater and feel the sun as you transport yourself there. That’s guided imagery or visualization.

It uses the power of your mind to change your focus to a peaceful time or event.

“If we’re in a stressful situation, you know, just shifting our mind and focusing on a time when we were really, really relaxed” is an effective way to calm down, Brown says.

In this practice you focus on feeling warmth and heaviness in different parts of your body. Then silently repeat pleasant words or statements for each body part, like my arms feel heavy and warm. This technique can create feelings of emotional and physical calmness.

Autogenic therapy also combines guided imagery and breathing exercises to reduce stress and your heart rate.

These low-intensity exercises are similar and have been around for thousands of years. Both include physical and so-called “meditative” movements to ease stress and lower blood pressure.

In yoga, you perform different stretching and strengthening postures. You remain still and focus on your breathing as you do each posture.

Tai chi involves slow, graceful movements, like a dance. You’ll breathe deeply and concentrate on your body as you move your weight from one pose to the next.

Depending on your physical abilities, you can perform both exercises while sitting in a chair, although you usually do tai chi while standing.

Before you start yoga, it’s a good idea to find a licensed professional who can help you learn the basic postures and which form of yoga might work best for you.

Many people swear by exercise to help reduce stress in their daily lives.

Whether it’s walking, running, biking, hiking, or tennis, movement of any kind can boost your endorphins, the chemicals in your brain that make you feel good. When your body creates more endorphins, you may find it easier to forget your worries and find a lasting sense of well-being.

Atlanta-based life coach Trisha Harp says she often recommends exercise to people she counsels.

Harp and her husband work next to each other all day, she says. Several times a week they get up in the middle of the day when they’re feeling in a slump and do a walk and talk.

Exercising with someone else can get you out of your physical space and gives you another person to chat with, which is also a stress reducer, she says.

Many de-stressing therapies have common goals. They aim to help you pay attention to your body and focus on aspects of your breathing or other exercises that may lower your blood pressure and increase feelings of well-being. You can try:

  • Biofeedback, which measures body functions and helps you learn to control them.
  • Self-hypnosis, in which a practitioner teaches you to relax when you hear a phrase or get a nonspoken cue.
  • Massage therapy, which can include Swedish, sports, Shiatsu, or other types of massage.
  • Music therapy, when a therapist uses music to accomplish health goals.
  • Art therapy, which uses art to enhance your physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
  • Aromatherapy, or using essential oils as a type of treatment.
  • Hydrotherapy, which can include soaking, compresses, or even steam baths.

While relaxation practices are mostly safe for heathy people, there have been reports of negative impacts, such as increased stress, bad thoughts, or a fear of losing control. Talk to your doctor about what practice might be best for you, depending on the relaxation technique you want to try and your health.

Why Is Canola Oil Banned In Europe? Understanding the Controversy | Credihealth

Canola oil is a vegetable oil known for its neutral taste & high smoke point- 400 degrees F. Recently, a storm of questions has been spreading about the oil, especially why the canola oil is banned in Europe. Well, the answer is straight! Europe hasn’t entirely banned Canola oil use but has implemented more strict rules for the sale of oil, placing the canola oil under careful examination. Such decisions have deeper reasons behind them, and understanding them can give valuable insights into the canola oil and why this happens. Read the article to uncover the exact truth!

What is Canola Oil And its History?

Canola oil is an oil derived from different rapeseed produced through plant crossbreeding. Its smooth texture, mild flavor, and high smoke point(about 400 degrees Fahrenheit) make it the most used cooking oil. The oil is rich in monounsaturated fats and phytosterols, preventing cholesterol levels in the body. Also, as it has a low glycemic index, it improves glycemic control.

About its History

Originating from the Canola plant seeds, Canola oil was first produced in Canada from traditional rapeseeds. Due to its high omega-3 fatty acids and low saturated fat content has become a staple in many households. Canola is an edible version of rapeseed. The rapeseed-derived canola is highly rich in erucic acid, which can be harmful in significant amounts. To address this, some Canadian scientists initiated crossbreeding of various rapeseed strains. They named their creative, new product “canola”. This unique oil version is obtained by healing the seeds, which are then crushed and processed similarly to sunflower, soybeans, and corn. The end product of which is the golden liquid that is known as canola oil today.

Is Canola Oil Bad For You?

According to a study, most canola oil undergoes hydrogenation, leading to high fatty acid levels. Typically, trans fatty acids cause an increased risk of heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States. In 2015, the FDA banned the use of artificial trans fatty acids when these fatty acids were recognized as unsafe to consume. In 2018, they stated that the consumption of trans fats contributes to an increase in “bad” LDL cholesterol levels.

Moreover, some research also says that canola oil is often genetically modified and highly processed. The processing method denatures the oil and increases the levels of trans-fats, thus raising the harmful cholesterol levels.

Why is Canola Oil Banned in Europe?

This is just because of the rumor circulating on the internet in 2018. This buzz claimed that Europe had banned the use of canola oil as it was carcinogenic and toxic. However, no evidence supports this statement. So, it’s crucial to know they haven’t banned the canola oil. The high erucic acid content in the canola oil is primarily Europe’s concern. Research says prolonged consumption of erucic acid may be associated with fat accumulation in heart muscle. Though the oil consumed in other countries is low in erucic acid, Europe maintains more strict standards. Expressing the concerns, Europe has made a more stringent rule for selling oil and fats, with canola oil under careful examination.

Should You Need To Avoid Canola Oil?

No, you should not need to avoid canola oil altogether as it is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and healthy fats, offering some health benefits. Plus, it has a low level of saturated fatty acids and a healthy balance of omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids. Moreover, research says, it is highly rich in monounsaturated fats, having a positive effect in lowering cholesterol levels and preventing risks of cardiovascular diseases

Besides this, canola oil is a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which fight off cell damage. Most importantly, it’s a great alternative to other types of cooking oils because of its high smoke point and resistance to high temperatures. These qualities make it an ideal choice for frying and baking. But, if you have any health issues, it will be better to seek medical advice before adding the oil to your everyday balanced diet. Also, if you’re worried about its risk, you can avoid it altogether and choose the other oil options.

Great Substitutes For Canola Oil

Well, canola oil is a well-known cooking oil in kitchens because of its neutral flavor and affordability. But if you are looking for the best substitutes, many oils offer similar results. Those include:

  • Grapeseed oil is the most suitable substitute for canola oil. It has a light and nutty flavor and contains high amounts of antioxidants and healthy fats.

  • Another great option is vegetable oil. Being extremely versatile, you can use vegetable oil for different cooking chores such as deep frying, sauteing, and baking. Make sure to buy the organic version of this oil.

  • Sunflower oil is another best substitute for canola oil. You can opt for sauteing, grilling, roasting, searing, and drizzling. Though it is also high in antioxidants and healthy fats, the oil has a mild flavor.

  • Avocado oil can also be an ideal substitute for canola oil as it has a high smoke point. The oil is perfect for baking, searing, or frying foods.

What is Vegetable Oil?

Typically, vegetable oil is the most versatile cooking oil made up of seeds and other parts of plants. For instance, canola oil, olive oil, soybean oil, and grapeseed oil all fall under the list of vegetable oils. It generally has a light flavor and nearly 450 degrees Fahrenheit smoke points. All-purpose vegetable oils are primarily sold in grocery shops or marts, typically made from soybean or corn oil or a blend of both.

But many people wonder whether canola oil is vegetable oil as they need clarification due to factors like being neutral in flavor, pale yellow, and having high smoke points. However, some soybean-based vegetable oils are low in saturated fats, while canola oil consists of the least saturated fats compared to all vegetable oils.

Canola Oil vs Vegetable Oil: What Makes Them Different?

Is canola oil the same as vegetable oil? Well, both oils are plant-derived cooking oils containing high smoke points. But what makes them different is their nutritional value, base ingredients, and appearance. Regarding the nutritional value of canola vs vegetable oil, canola oil is a much healthier option. It has no trans fats and low saturated fat content, making it safe for heart health. Moreover, the oil has high monounsaturated fat known for improving good cholesterol levels and preventing the risk of heart disease. Research says canola oil in a diet can reduce LDL cholesterol levels by an average of 17%.

On the other hand, vegetable oils are highly rich in polyunsaturated fats when compared with canola oil. A report says that these oils can generate substantial health hazards when used at high temperatures because of the high levels of polyunsaturated fats. This makes canola oil a more nutritious choice than vegetable oil. Regarding base ingredients, canola oil is derived from rapeseed plants, while vegetable oil is produced using seeds or other plant parts. Canola and some vegetable oils appear pale yellow. Since the composition of various vegetable oils can vary, the color may range from gold to yellow to green.

Can You Interchangeably Use Canola Oil And Vegetable Oil?

Yes, you can interchangeably use canola and vegetable oil. Though you will find them slightly different in flavor, the result will be the same whether you use them for baking, frying, or sauteing. If saturated fats are your concern, you may pick the canola oil. Otherwise, it is good to go with both oils as they have a good amount of monounsaturated fatty acids known for maintaining good cholesterol levels in the body.

Is Rapeseed Oil Bad for You?

Rapeseed oil with low erucic acid is called canola oil. As per the report by FDA, rapeseed oil is safe to use in moderate amounts. It may help reduce levels of LDL cholesterols, which are also known as “bad” cholesterols. This oil is heart-healthy, containing low saturated and high unsaturated fat levels. A tablespoon of rapeseed oil consists of:

However, the health benefits of this oil are based on how often and how much you consume it with any food. In addition, the quality of the oil also matters. For instance, one tablespoon of cold-pressed rapeseed oil with a salad plate will give different benefits. And, when you eat french fries that are deeply fried in rapeseed oil, the health effects will differ.

Conclusion

The careful inspection of canola oil in Europe highlights the significance of understanding the impacts of food choices on health. As a consumer, you must be well-informed about the oils and choose the one that suits your culinary preferences and health needs. We hope the difference between canola and vegetable oil thoroughly explained above can help you decide the right pick. Canola oil might be a suitable option for some people, but it’s also essential to consider its health effects. We hope you got the answer through this article to your question, “Why is Canola Oil Banned in Europe?”. It’s not banned. It is under scrutiny because of its high erucic acid content.

Can You Put Vicks On Your Tooth : Safe or Not | Expert Advice | Credihealth

In the world of home remedies and some distinctive uses of pain-relieving products, few ideas are trending these days for tooth-related problems like nerve pain and swelling. Several remedies can quickly help kill tooth pain nerves in 3 seconds permanently, but still, many myths are in buzz nowadays, which confuses people a lot. One rumor that often emerges is putting Vicks on a tooth.

Being a mentholated ointment, Vicks has been used for many years for its several benefits in relieving muscle pain and soothing congestion. But applying it to a tooth might seem an unconvincing concept. So, the question of many people, “Can you put Vicks on your tooth,” holds any merit? In this article, let us discover its potential effectiveness and risks. Read on!

Can You Put Vicks Vaporub In Your Mouth?

There is a lot of hype surrounding whether it is safe to use Vicks VapoRub on teeth and gums. It is not recommended to put Vicks vapoRub for teeth or mouth. Its application is only for skin use. If you ingest turpentine oil and camphor present in Vicks, it can cause systemic toxicity. The FDA approves Camphorfor relieving pain and numbing the skin. But using Vicks, a camphor-containing ointment inside the mouth, is not recommended.

Camphor ingestion can lead to a burning sensation and irritation of the throat and mouth. It can cause vomiting and nausea within 5 to 15 minutes. The severe side effects of Vicks ingestion may include difficulty in breathing, seizures, and even death. Moreover, high amounts of turpentine oil ingestion can result in kidney failure, vomiting, stomach bleeding, loss of vision, and harsh coughing. According to a study, Vicks VapoRub is not recommended for internal use. Its packaging label also points to its external use only. The skin inside the mouth is more delicate, so introducing Vicks can be risky for your health.

Does Vicks Vaporub Work For Toothache?

Typically, Vicks VapoRub is a mentholated topical ointment rich in menthol, thymol, Camphor, turpentine oil, and many other essential oils. Each ingredient in it has an influential role. Menthol broadens peripheral blood vessels, helps relax the skin, and relieves irritation. Being an antiseptic, thymol prevents gum infection and promotes good oral health. Additionally, turpentine oil is a potent antiseptic and analgesic, effective in treating muscle soreness.

The most common use of Vicks is relieving symptoms of muscle aches, cough, and congestion. However, putting it in sensitive areas, like a tooth, needs careful consideration.

What Happens If I Use Vicks Vaporub and Toothpaste For Toothache?

Using Vicks VapoRub and toothpaste together for a toothache is not recommended and can potentially be harmful. Here is what you need to know:

  • Toothpaste contains ingredients like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and alcohol which can further irritate the exposed nerves and dentin of your tooth. This will likely worsen the toothache.
  • The camphor in VapoRub can also be irritating to the gums and tooth. There is no evidence that VapoRub helps relieve tooth pain.
  • You may experience a burning or stinging sensation and increased inflammation from applying VapoRub and toothpaste topically to the affected tooth and gums.
  • There is a risk of accidentally swallowing the toothpaste or VapoRub, which can cause digestive irritation, nausea or vomiting.
  • The numbing effect from these products will only provide temporary, superficial relief from tooth pain. They cannot treat the underlying cause of the toothache.
  • It is best to avoid home remedies like VapoRub and toothpaste for tooth pain.

Can You Use Vicks VapoRub On Teeth For Whitening?

Well, no scientifically-approved proof supports the safety and effectiveness of the Vicks VapoRub for teeth whitening. It is just a rumor on the internet! It is an ointment for topical application which can treat flu symptoms, cough, and cold. So, when looking for tooth whitening options, it is recommended to consult the dentist. You can also try at-home whitening gels and whitening toothpaste. These remedies are practical as well as safe. When considering oral solutions, seeking help from reliable sources and medical professionals is advisable.

Moreover, using Vicks vapoRub and toothpaste for tooth whitening is not advisable. It can be harmful to your gums and teeth because of the ingredients in them. Vick ingredients can cause chemical irritation in delicate gum tissues, leading to swelling, pain, and redness. On the other hand, when mixed with Vicks, toothpaste can’t help promote good oral health.

Best Alternatives For Teeth Whitening

A wish to have a brighter, white smile has led to the massive use of teeth-whitening products in the past few years. With attractiveness, white teeth also boost confidence in social situations. So, instead of Vicks, opt for:

  • The whitening toothpaste is the most straightforward approach you can quickly try at home every morning. Ingredients in whitening toothpaste effectively remove plaque and rough stains from the tooth surface.
  • If you are looking for the instant and most effortless strategy for teeth whitening, at-home teeth whitening kits are best. This kit consists of whitening gel-filled pads applied to the affected teeth for some time.
  • On the other hand, in-office teeth whitening is the most efficient treatment done by professionals. One research says that dentists use a whitening gel that consists of hydrogen peroxide, accompanied by light or laser. This, as a result, maximizes the whitening effect.

Can You Use Vicks VapoRub For Toothache?

Vicks VapoRub can help kill wisdom tooth pain caused by muscle soreness. Its application increases heat loss by boosting blood vessels and making the nerves less sensitive. Also, painful back teeth may impact the jaw muscles, leading to difficulty opening the mouth. Here, in this case, Vicks may give relief. But Vicks has few effects for tooth pain relief because it can not be put directly on the affected tooth. It can be rubbed on the skin’s outer side adjacent to the painful tooth.

Does Vicks Work For A Toothache?

Typically, Vicks contain active ingredients named menthol, Camphor, turpentine oil, and eucalyptus oil. Menthol in Vicks VapoRub for toothache is very helpful. Its application to the affected skin side relieves minor pain and muscle soreness. Menthol works similarly to cold or ice therapy but is far more effective.

Moreover, menthol blocks nerve gates that induce pain response, thus reducing sensitivity. In addition, its anti-inflammatory effects help lower the production of substances that cause muscle inflammation. Regarding Camphor, its anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties enormously relieve pain.

Note: Though Vicks tremendously affects toothache, putting it inside your mouth is not recommended. The Camphor in Vicks can cause systemic toxicity, affecting the entire body. Some effective home remedies can help in this case!

What Are The Safe Approaches For Toothache Relief

Here is the guide to the safe and effective remedies for toothache:

  1. Use over-the-counter oral gels, which are particularly formulated for relieving toothache. They are safe and efficient to apply to sensitive oral tissues.
  2. Applying a cold compress on the outer side of the face with the affected tooth can also numb the area and ease toothache.
  3. Use clove oil as being naturally analgesic, it helps soothe the tooth pain temporarily and is the best toothache remedy. You must dilute it with a carrier oil to prevent gum irritation and then apply lightly.
  4. You can also gargle using warm salt water, helping prevent inflammation. This is the best remedy for tooth nerve pain relief that will give temporary comfort.
  5. Tea tree oil for toothache might also be helpful for some. Just put 1-2 drops of oil directly on the affected tooth.

However, if it is a nerve pain case that continues for many days, it is better to consult the dentist. With treatments like fillings, root canal therapy, and extraction, professionals can permanently help to treat nerve pain.

Potential Side Effects Of Using Vicks for Dental Care

Since Vicks has not been shown safe and effective for toothache, teeth whitening, and gums, it gives some health risks on ingestion:

1. Ingestion risk

The Vicks VapoRub ingredients are not suggested to be consumed for internal health benefits. Putting it directly into your tooth can accidentally lead to ingestion via saliva. When you swallow menthol and Camphor in large quantities, it can harm your health. You may feel breathlessness, fatigue, and sleepiness, thus affecting your overall well-being.

2. Tooth and oral mucosa issues

The ingredients of Vicks VapoRub, such as cajeput oil and menthol, may cause damage to your teeth and oral mucosa. Applying this topical ointment to tooth or gum tissues can worsen tooth or gum sensitivity. Its direct application can lead to oral mucosal irritation, extreme discomfort, and other dental problems.

3. Irritation

When you apply the Vicks to the delicate gum tissues, the intense fragrance of its camphor and menthol ingredients can induce burning sensations or irritation. Vicks also contains different plant products such as turpentine, cedar leaf, and eucalyptus. All these types of oils found in Vicks have the potential to irritate or sensitize the inside skin of the mouth.

4. Toxicity

Camphor ingredient of Vicks VapoRub is toxic if ingested too much or swallowed in large quantities. Even a tiny amount can be risky for your overall health if it accidentally gets absorbed into the body through mucous membranes. Manufacturers suggest its use only for external benefits. They even warn not to use the Vicks for children under the age of 2 years. So, always read the instructions labeled on the packaging for correct use.

Summing Up

To conclude, no scientific proof supports Vicks VapoRub use on teeth. It can help relieve specific issues but is not recommended for use on teeth or inside the mouth. The potential risks include irritation, allergic reaction, and ingestion. If you want a reliable solution for toothache or teeth whitening, we recommend scheduling an appointment with trustworthy dental specialists.
