Showtime Review: The Series Works If You Don’t Expect Any Piercing Insights

Layers of darkness that lie behind and around the glitter and glamour of Mumbai showbiz pervades Showtime, a Disney+Hotstar series produced by Dharmatic Entertainment. Employing broad and familiar strokes, the show has no dearth of vim and vigour. Not much of it percolates beneath its shiny surface.

Be that as it may, the first four episodes of Showtime – the next bunch is scheduled to arrive in June – possess just about enough vitality to be able to sustain the interest of the audience, if only in a superficial sort of way.

Showtime, created by Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani co-writer Sumit Roy and headlined by Emraan Hashmi, is a somewhat watered-down present-day variant of last year’s Amazon Prime period drama series Jubilee, set in the Hindi film industry of the studio era. Shorn of the history and politics of, and in, the world outside the pale of the film industry, Showtime probes a segment of moviedom and seeks to peel back the layers off the grime behind the glitz of a high-stakes business that peddles pulp and pretends to be proud of it because it brings in huge profits.

Showtime, written by the show creator with Lara Chandni and Mithun Gangopadhyay and directed by Mihir Desai and Archit Kumar, weaves a yarn that perpetuates notions about the Mumbai dream factory that enjoy currency among netizens who have a love-hate relationship with Bollywood.

Even when it goes emphatically meta, Showtime does not go beyond known facts about filmmaking and its human and material resources. But the series works if you do not expect any piercing insights. It is buoyed by a clutch of effective performances by the principal actors.

Showtime is a vehicle that has a passably robust undercarriage that holds the structure together but it is an exercise that is hampered somewhat when it comes to filling the canvas with the sort of detailing that is not already in the public domain.

It talks about all the things that we talk about when we talk about contemporary Hindi cinema – crass commercialism, nepotism, the hubris of stardom, salacious scandals, the obsession with box office numbers, manipulation of reviews, acts of sabotage, the law of diminishing returns, the rising power of southern cinema and the eternal conflict between art and commerce.

The show seems at times to be chuckling at the very industry that has produced it. Or is the joke on the audience that is going to consume it? No matter what, Showtime is a well-packaged, consciously calibrated confessional. It puts Bollywood under the scanner but it is in the mood for transparency only as long as too many ‘real’ skeletons do not tumble out of the closet.

A movie mogul’s days are numbered. A younger player wants to play the game by his own rules. A couple of women grapple with the opportunities and challenges that come their way and compel them to leave their comfort zones. A full-of-himself male megastar is convinced he is God.

The entire jingbang, men and women caught in a vortex of rapid shifts – some of their own making – that they struggle to come to terms with, is fair game. In an unanticipated turn of events, Victor Kapoor (Naseeruddin Shah), the aged boss of Viktory Studios, a Mumbai film production company celebrating its 40th anniversary, springs an unpleasant surprise on his brash male heir, Raghu Kapoor (Emraan Hashmi).

The old man, with good reason, hands over the reins of the business to a wet-behind-the-ears girl, Mahika Nandy (Mahima Makwana), a rookie film critic whose brutally negative review of the banner’s latest film, has gotten under the skin of the Viktory scion.

Victor Kapoor’s dramatic move sparks a chain of events, counter-moves and ambitious new film projects, bruised egos and broken promises that pit Mahika against forces that she must understand in order to try and get on top of them. The power struggle between her and Raghu Khanna is at the heart of the plot.

Victor Kapoor has built the studio from scratch and developed a sense of infallibility unmindful that he has delivered a string of duds. He holds that cinema dhanda nahi dharm hai (filmmaking is not a business, it is a religion). Raghu Khanna believes in no such dictum.

The young woman who is catapulted to a role that she is hardly ready for finds help and support from her boyfriend Prithvi (Vishal Vashishtha), a former Viktory Studios factotum, and Victor Kapoor’s most trusted aide Deven (Denzil Smith).

There is a woman in Raghu Khanna’s life – item girl Yasmin Ali (Mouni Roy), who, encouraged by her lover, nurtures the dream of playing the lead in a female-centric spy thriller. But since she is at the mercy of a fickle man who can make or break her, life isn’t a bed of roses for her. Her battles provide Showtime another significant melodramatic strand. Raghu’s relationship with his principal star, Amaan Khanna (Rajeev Khandelwal) is unstable. They have frequent run-ins but the two men, bound together by their professional interests, cannot do without each other.

In one scene, Raghu says to Armaan: “Let’s give the audience what they want.” In another, Armaan fires a salvo at Raghu: “Who are you? You think you’re God. Bollywood mein khuda sirf star hota hai.” Don’t we know that already?

The principal quintet of actors in Showtime is a diverse lot who bring different performative styles to bear upon the characters that they play. Naseeruddin Shah’s Victor represents the old school, Emraan Hashmi’s Raghu is the uncertain present and Mahima Makwana’s Mahika denotes an even more blurry future.

Rajeev Khandelwal’s superstar and Mouni Roy’s saucy starlet are symbols of self-absorbed arrogance and dogged ambition respectively. Neither of these actors is fleshing out a never-before seen character but they plunge into their roles with gusto and do not let the energy levels subside.

Even though it is easy to anticipate what is coming next, and even when the rhythm of the show slackens a touch, the pace of the series ensures that it never goes off the boil. What eventually matters the most is: does Showtime draw us into what is going on and what lies ahead?

In other words, does Showtime have us asking for more? Well, for the most part, it has enough on offer to keep us invested. When the fourth episode winds down with the promise to return with an extension of the story, the show has sucked the audience in sufficiently for us to want to dig deeper, come June, into the lives and desires of Mahika, Raghu, Armaan and Yasmin.

Shakuntala Kulkarni’s armoured Dior runway

On February 27, at Paris Fashion Week, Dior went back to the 60s. But instead of leaning into its ‘swinging’ tag, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri had her models wend their way around life-size, cage-like cane forms. Crafted by Mumbai-based artist Shakuntala Kulkarni, the commanding pieces placed at the centre of the runway in Tuileries Garden brought to mind many things: ancient carapaces, imposing samurai yoroi (armour), but also a sense of strength.

While Chiuri’s Fall/Winter 2024-2025 collection focused on the decade of liberated fashion — a transitional era that brought with it the duality of classic fashion and ready-to-wear — Kulkarni’s sculptures offset it perfectly with its symbolised dichotomy of notions of protection and restricted movement. “We were speaking about women’s empowerment and freedom,” says the multimedia artist, 74. “Maria was looking at the new woman and so was I, or rather the possibility of who she could become. Strength and energy, grace and dignity. Maria used fabric and I used cane as fabric to protect.”

As the world takes notice of Kulkarni’s 12-year questioning of women’s body politics, she tells the Magazine about the collaboration with the French fashion house and why the message of her cane armour is always important.

How did the collaboration with Dior come about?

One of Dior’s directors walked into Chemould Prescott Road some time in March or April last year, during my exhibition Quieter than Silence – Compilation of Short Stories. He saw my catalogues of Juloos [a four-screen video installation created in 2015] and Of Bodies, Armour and Cages, and gave it to Maria Grazia Chiuri. When I had a conversation with Maria, I realised that we were both speaking about women’s empowerment and freedom. She was looking at the new woman and so was I — or rather the possibility of who she is, of who she could become. I love movement; I use body language in my films and installations. Hence, the models walking in choreographed movements appealed to me. It was a great experience working together and an opportunity to create an installation in a huge space.

What inspired you to focus on the female body and its attendant vulnerabilities?

I come from a very open and forward-looking family. I experienced no restrictions till I went to college. Out in the world, however, I experienced discrimination — through personal and shared experiences, through literature, through theatre and films. I saw how this creates fear, discomfort and anxiety for women, sometimes subtly and sometimes loudly. I started inquiring into the violation of the female spaces both in private and public. Theatre has been a huge influence on my work. Hence, I started inviting my viewers to participate in the work, and experience the fear or discomfort women experience within society, which is essentially patriarchal. I have used my body as a site to express all this through video performances, photo performances, live performances, installations, drawing and later by using cane for the armour.

Your series of armour protects the body but traps it too. Why the dichotomy?

Once, when I was walking in a crowded place in Mumbai, drops of tar fell on me and burned parts of my body. It triggered the notion of protection in public spaces. I was also reading about the rapes in India, and I felt responsible to address it. Thus, the notion of protecting the body from atrocities and violence came up. I designed the armour in such a way that it was a metaphor for protection even as it trapped the body within its cage-like structure. Marriages are supposed to protect a girl, but sometimes atrocities are committed against her. There are honour killings, dowry deaths, consumption, objectification. These are just a few examples to clarify why the armour is used as both protection and as a cage for trapping the female body within the patriarchal society.

Why did you choose cane as your medium?

I have always loved cane. It is from a creeper family that looks delicate, but it is tenacious. When joined by cane thread, it is flexible; it can be bent and twisted when it is heated. It is also monochromatic with shades of black that are interesting.

How many pieces have you created till date?

Between 2010 and 2012, I made 11 armours, followed by three more in the next two years. They belonged to a project titled Of Bodies, Armour and Cages. In 2015, I took parts of cane armour and cane jewellery to create Juloos — a four-screen video installation that speaks to a vision of power, freedom, self-expression, dignity, grace, respect and solidarity. In 2022, I made another four, and last year five pieces for a project called Armour for the Brides. I researched different headgears and dresses, and looked at masks from different countries and cultures for it. The hairdos were inspired by Roman sculptures to Bollywood hairstyles of the 60s and 70s, while the outfits ranged from Rajasthani ghagras to Kathakali costumes and colonial dresses. [I even incorporated] the wedding dress and mini skirts that my daughter wore and my son’s dungarees. Each armour can take anywhere from one to three months depending on its complexity.

Since you created the first armour in 2012, have your views on the threats faced by women changed?

Threats to women continue. Though many are economically independent and confident today, and so are able to deal with threats, many others are still struggling. So, I will continue to address victimisation and power. The cane armour speaks about the vulnerability of the trapped body versus safety and protection from atrocities.

What is your relationship with clothing?

I have a fondness for clothing and textiles. My babies were wrapped in soft cloth, and covered by a quilt made by my grandmother and mother. My mother stitches clothes for me and my children. So, I have a tender, loving relationship with cloth. It is used for different purposes: protecting the body, beautifying it, respecting it, admiring it. In my day-to-day life, I prefer cotton, and wear jeans or a kurta pyjama. For an event, I choose a sari, kurta pyjama or lungi. I love to collect saris from the loom if possible, or traditional ones from different parts of India. My collection of lungis is from various countries, including Sri Lanka, India and Bhutan.

What are you working on next?

I never have an idea till something triggers a concept or an image.

The writer is based in Mumbai.

12 Movies To Watch If You Liked Dune (2021)

From 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) to Interstellar (2014), here are 15 brilliant movies like Dune.

In 1965, a landmark text in sci-fi literature was published, which changed the face of the genre for good. Frank Herbert’s masterpiece Dune, has influenced countless works in sci-fi, fantasy, and other genres. Dune is set in the distant future, where warring noble houses have formed a feudal interstellar society. The House of Atreides is put in charge of the desert planet Arrakis. Arrakis has a hostile climate but is the sole source of the invaluable “spice” — the drug which provides an enhanced perception of space and time. The spice melange isn’t just a valuable resource, it’s essential for intergalactic travel.

The sci-fi adventure novel’s complex intermesh of politics, religion, technology, ecology, and psychology in a background of incredibly innovative sci-fi concepts, and is nothing short of visionary. However, adapting Dune to the big screen has been a cinematic minefield for directors so far. Dune fans were hopeful that Denis Villeneuve‘s adaptation (produced by Warner Bros.) would faithfully justify the novel. Herbert’s first book in the series was adapted in two parts. Released in 2021, the first part was one of the first big blockbusters of the post-Covid era.

Dune: Part Two was released on March 1, 2024, and enjoyed a record-breaking box-office debut. Critically, the sequel was likened to the greatest sequels ever made such as The Empire Strikes and The Dark Knight. Dune: Part Two continues Paul Atredies’ journey on the desert planet Arrakis as he brings together the native Fremen tribe to defeat the Harkonnens and the Emperor.

Quickly then, here are 15 must see movies like Dune:

Movies Like Dune

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

This epic sci-fi film from Stanley Kubrick is considered as one of the greatest and most influential space movies ever made. The film depicts a space voyage to Jupiter after a mysterious monolith is discovered. Most of the spacecraft’s functions are controlled by a sentient supercomputer, HAL, which is designed to be error-free.

2001 is a groundbreaking space film that explores the concepts of evolution, extraterrestrial life, technology, philosophy, and human consciousness. The humongous scale of its visuals has had a huge influence on sci-fi epics, including Villeneuve’s Dune. Its ambiguity has baffled many, but that’s also perhaps the best thing about the film. The imagery, the performances, the pioneering special effects, and Kubrick’s concept of AI are exemplary. The appeal of this movie has only increased with the passage of time.

2. Solaris (1972)

Source: The Guardian

This landmark science fiction film from Andrei Tarkovsky brings an unforeseen philosophical and psychological depth to the sci-fi genre. Based on Stanisław Lem’s novel of the same name, this dark and complex outer space art film easily qualifies among the best movies in the history of cinema. A psychologist travels to a space station orbiting the planet Solaris to see why the crew has stalled their mission. He finds them experiencing strange emotional crises and starts feeling the same way himself.

The shiny sheen of the spacecraft is done away with, and we get a haunting and desolate picture instead, which resonates more deeply. This film contemplates alien intelligence as an agent of transformation. It is original, innovative, visually stunning, emotionally affecting, and thought-provoking.

3. Interstellar (2014)

Source: Legendary Pictures

The epic science fiction drama by Christopher Nolan combines innovative concepts with great psychological depth to create a modern masterpiece. It’s set in a dystopian future, where the earth has become nearly inhabitable. A group of astronauts travel through a mysterious wormhole in search of a new home for humanity.

The film explores several complicated scientific ideas in a surprising and creative way. The concept of space and time is handled with mesmerizing proficiency. But the human drama of love, loss, faith, and sheer survival is just as integral to the film, which makes it exceptional. Every piece of the film is propelled by a remarkably rare combination of intellect and emotion.

4. The Martian (2015)

Source: TIME

Based on Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, Ridley Scott’s survival drama has more science than an average sci-fi film. The plot is simple. An astronaut is stranded on Mars after he’s accidentally left behind and must do whatever it takes to survive until rescued. The excellence of the film lies in its execution.

It avoids the pitfalls of the survival story trope and doesn’t pretend to be an unpredictable thriller. It leans into the inevitable and the practical and offers plenty of fun along the way. The near-absurd humor of fighting the forces of the universe using duct tape is one of many great touches. The visuals are brilliant, and the performances are strong. It is a thoroughly entertaining film that ironically offers a down-to-earth approach in an out-of-earth environment.

5. Star Wars trilogy (1977, 1980, 1983)

Source: Letterboxd

The original trilogy of this iconic franchise pioneered the blockbuster space cinema. George Lucas is the mastermind behind this space opera, which is still a huge pop cultural phenomenon. The first movie is especially important as it provided groundbreaking technical innovations. It deviated from contemporary trends by presenting a grand and positive take on sci-fi, replete with spectacular visuals.

The films revolve around the Galactic Civil War between the tyrannical Galactic Empire and the freedom-seeking Rebel Alliance. The archetypal hero’s journey takes place within this backdrop. The films have a great balance of memorable characters, action, romance, humor, and emotion. The fantasy elements are some of the big highlights. While not deeply complex, the Star Wars series is immensely entertaining and culturally relevant.

Where to Watch: Hotstar, Apple TV

6. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Source: IMDb

Years after the fantastic Mad Max trilogy, George Miller revisited this hugely successful franchise and gave it a stunning modern makeover. This is a post-apocalyptic action film set in a desert wasteland full of desperate, insane, grotesque characters. The loner Max (Tom Hardy) joins forces with rebellious war commander Furiosa (Theron) to flee from a dangerous cult leader (Immortan Joe) and his crazed army.

Most of the film is a long, violent, hyperactive convoy chase, and yet, the socio-political themes and emotional dynamics are given remarkable weight. The film brilliantly compresses a lot of its broad ideas within very little dialogue. The visual effects and practical stunt work are absolutely breathtaking. The performances are top-notch. Fury Road is creative, audacious, and an absolute must watch.

7. On the Silver Globe (1988)

Source: The New York Times

This sci-fi art film from Andrzej Żuławski was never completed. The political turmoil it went through during production is written all over it, but that, in a strange way, adds to its appeal. It is a deeply unsettling tale that utilizes its sci-fi setting to present a highly philosophical contemplation of life.

A space researcher tries to explore a civilization founded by astronauts who were once stranded on a planet resembling Earth. Based on Żuławski’s great-uncle Jerzy Żuławski’s novel, the film is concerned with the foundation of civilization, religion, and the nature of human beings. The blend of the savage and the futuristic is haunting and thought-provoking. The surrealistic imagery and strategic camera movements make it visually stunning. It is one of the most unconventional and creative sci-fi movies ever (almost) made.

Żuławski’s grand production design, mind-bending staging and philosophical musings intrigue as well as exhaust us.

8. Ikarie XB-1 (1963)

Source: TCM

This lesser-known film from director Jindřich Polák was actually a game-changer in the sci-fi genre when it was released. It’s based on Stanisław Lem’s novel, The Magellanic Cloud. It centers on space travel, extraterrestrial life, and the psycho-social dynamics that govern human nature.

It is set in the year 2163 when a spaceship is sent to probe potentially habitable planets. The crew tries to cope with their heavily restricted life. They also encounter various issues, including a mysterious spaceship and a dark star. The special effects are impressive for its time. It is a refreshing blend of the dark and the upbeat. It is exciting, artistic, original, and manages to focus on serious subjects without being heavy-handed.

9. Fantastic Planet (1973)

Source: Criterion

This is an experimental animated sci-fi film from René Laloux, based on Stefan Wul’s novel, Oms en série. Much like Dune, this film can be viewed as an allegory of colonialism set on an alien planet. The Draags are the large blue-skinned civilised race that rule the planet Ygam. They treat the savage humanoid Oms as their natural inferiors, but a seismic shift occurs when an Om receives an education.

What makes this movie exceptional isn’t the plot but the imaginative visuals. Renowned artist Roland Topor is largely responsible for its colorful, surrealistic, hallucinatory quality. The cut-out stop-motion animation heightens the strangeness of the film even further. This inventive psychedelic spectacle uses a well-trodden theme but creates something wholly original with it.

10. Kin-dza-dza! (1986)

Source: Prime Video

This Soviet cult film is a sci-fi dystopian dark comedy directed by Georgiy Daneliya. When two Russians press a button on an alien device, they are transported to the bizarre planet called Pluke. Pluke is a post-apocalyptic landscape with a Mad Max-esque society. Black markets, exploitation, inequalities, and utter ridiculousness abound.

The truly clever thing about this surrealistic, amusing film is that this ridiculousness actually hits rather close to home. It is a social satire and critique of consumerism, capitalism, and the basic greed in human nature stretched to extremes. The wry humour that marks the film’s tone brilliantly convey the inherent absurdity of life itself.

11. Hard to Be a God (2013)

movies like Dune
Source: IMDb

This sci-fi arthouse film from Aleksei German is based on the novel of the same name by the Strugatsky brothers. Decades in the making, it was finally completed after German’s death. It is a jarringly unique take on life on an alien planet, which looks to the past more than the future. The film is set on the planet Arkanar, whose human civilization is a mirror of our own medieval times. Scientists from Earth are sent there in disguise to understand this society and help the alien intelligentsia.

The film unfolds like a vision of hell, entirely nightmarish and repulsive. The exceptional production design has created a visceral and convincing world of repugnant beauty. It is a difficult and challenging watch. The monochrome aesthetics and oblique narrative style showcase avant-garde filmmaking at its finest. This is not just a film but an immersive experience.

12. Avatar (2009)

Source: Fox Studios

Avatar demanded such dazzling and sophisticated special effects that director James Cameron had to stall it for a few years to let technology catch up. The final product, especially when viewed in 3D, was a jaw-dropping visual spectacle. But Avatar was more than just aesthetics.

It’s set in the year 2154, when humans are colonising an exoplanetary moon called Pandora to mine a valuable mineral. They explore Pandora by using avatars — lookalikes of the native Na’vi tribe, mind-controlled by humans.

Avatar is a poignant, powerful film with a strong anti-imperialism message, much like Dune. The vibrant colors and intricate world-building make the lush alien world of Pandora a thing of beauty. The motion capture techniques are used brilliantly, making the Na’vi seem lifelike.

Where to Watch: Hotstar, Apple TV

13. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Source: Collider

David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia might not be set in a faraway galaxy. But the story of the British diplomat and army officer inspired many creators, including author Frank Herbert. Paul Atreides’ journey on the desert planet Arrakis follows quite a few narrative beats of T.E. Lawrence’s (Peter O’Toole) quest to unite a band of Bedouin tribesmen against the Ottoman Empire. Director Denis Villeneuve has cited the influence of David Lean’s epic historical drama on Dune’s aesthetics.

Lawrence of Arabia’s commentary on power, imperialism, and faith is also reflected in complex political games unfolding in Arrakis. Apart from Dune, Lawrence of Arabia has influenced many other sci-fi films, including the Star Wars movies.

Where to Watch: Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV

14. John Carter (2012)

Source: Mubi

Edgar Rice Burroughs’ pulpy sci-fi space opera Barsoom series is a pioneering work in this genre. Herbert’s basic setup in Dune owes a lot to Burroughs and Isaac Asimov’s books. John Carter is the adaptation of the first book in the Barsoom series – A Princess of Mars (published in 1912). The film chronicles the adventures of the war-weary eponymous character (Taylor Kitsch), who is transported to the mysterious planet of Barsoom (Mars), where he is caught amidst a monumental conflict.

While John Carter bombed at the box office trying to be a more palatable spectacle, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune perfectly transplanted the philosophical and political aspects of Herbert’s novel.

15. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

Source: Letterboxd

Frank Herbert’s space epic novel, Dune, hugely influenced Hayao Miyazaki’s gorgeous anime, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the anime shares many themes with Dune, including ecology, corrupt power, and warrior messiahs. Miyazaki’s world also has an intriguing counterpart to Arrakis’ Sandworm: the giant, sentient insects known as ‘Ohmu.’

Nausicaä follows the tale of the eponymous young princess, who fights against a rival kingdom that tries to unleash a deadly weapon on the world. Like Paul, Nausicaä ventures into a bleak landscape and tries to understand its inhabitants. While both are cautionary tales about greed and power, Nausicaä’s character arc differs significantly from Paul’s.

It’s Isabelle Huppert Language | FilmInk

Remarkable at 70, the lean, gorgeous and incredibly youthful iconic French actress, has two films in the Alliance Francaise French Film Festival (AFFFF) and recently premiered two new movies at Berlinale. And that’s not mentioning her stage performances.

We met in Berlin for the umpteenth time as she premiered My New Friends, her second film with French director Andre Techine; and A Traveller’s Needs, her third with South Korea’s Hong Sang-soo, which took out the Grand Jury (or second) prize.

In Venice, she had premiered another Asia-set film, Sidonie in Japan, and it screens at AFFFF, as does The Sitting Duck, one of her best. Huppert’s portrayal as real-life whistle-blower, Maureen Kearney, certainly is one worth seeing.

You have two films in Berlin and two in the French Film Festival in Australia.

“I have a good friend in Australia and she texted me about that yesterday.”

Four films all at once. How do you do it? It’s like in Call My Agent! where you’re running around doing many things at once.

“No, it wasn’t like that. I did the films over three years.”

You never seem to stop working.

“Yes, I do.”

What do you do when you stop working?

“Nothing.”

Really? Can you do that?

“I find it very hard. It was Marguerite Duras who said how difficult it is to do nothing. But to do nothing, really nothing, it’s not so pleasant. It’s not that it is difficult, but it’s not so pleasant.”

The mind starts doing things when you do nothing.

“Yes, maybe. But what does it mean to do nothing? Sleep? Dream? Lying on your bed? I don’t know.”

In My New Friends, your policewoman character is lonely and befriends her neighbours who are anarchists, on the other side of the law.

“I like the way that Andre Techine shows loneliness in the film. He really insisted for me to never be sad or melancholic, he wanted to go against that idea.”

In A Traveller’s Needs [above] your character is also lonely.

“Yes, she’s very lonely. But I think she is also very funny, most of the time.”

Are you attracted to this lonely kind of character?

“I think you show a lot of things by showing a lonely character in films. It’s almost like you could set a whole world around this loneliness. And in fact, that’s exactly what happens in both films, even though there is very little that you can compare between them. They’re two totally different visions from each director, two totally different worlds even if there are certain similarities.”

Both films place your character in a new environment.

“Hong always sees me in the same way, being a little surprised by what I see or as I question people because there are so many differences between France and Korea. In Andre’s film, she is also so different from the young anarchists. She’s a policewoman, she’s on the side of order. And he’s an anarchist and is also an artist. That’s interesting.”

Does this mean that if you are an artist, you necessarily rebel? Have you ever flirted with being a radical?

“No, No.”

Did you have any radical friends when you were young?

“Yes, maybe when I was very young. Everyone grew up with it.”

The ‘68 protests were huge in France.

“Yes, in ‘68 maybe when I was at school, but some of the young guys were more radical than I was.”

The film [My New Friends, above] shows a very French angle where people are very, very proactive. And then against that background, even if she is a policewoman, she tries to find a connection with the other people.

“I think it’s also interesting to see another side of the police; the fact that the film starts out with the police demonstration and we see them as a group of people with their own problems, missing out on life and lacking personal attention. Eventually in the story you find out that her husband had been a policeman, and he killed himself. In a very subtle way Andre wanted to change perceptions and to humanise the character.”

I think she felt like she needed to do something with her life. She’s getting older, she’s lonely and wants not to just do the job and to do other things. Do you feel like that sometimes?

“Me? No!! I’m perfectly fulfilled with what I do. But yes, she’s ready to meet these new people, her new neighbours. Yet, finally she ends up alone again and I like that. You could imagine many, many endings to the film, you don’t even know if she will see them again. I like this kind of big question mark at the end.”

The film marks only your second film with Techine after 1979’s The Bronte Sisters.

“Obviously over the years we saw each other, sometimes with the idea that we wanted to work together again and it was a nice feeling to finally do it.”

You’re about to turn 71, but we never think of you as aging. You never seem to change at all.

“Thank you very much.”

You have a joie de vivre maybe because you really love what you do.

“Yeah, that’s for sure. That’s a privilege, you know, to do something you love to do. Of course, so many people do things that they don’t love to make a living. Every day I think it’s such a privilege.”

Physically you don’t seem to need to change yourself much from movie to movie.

“I do change, of course.”

But we don’t see a huge transformation.

“No, but I think each story makes you look different. You have to rely on that. I understand they are not major changes, but I try to change. And also, I like to experience different ways of making films.

“Both Andre Techine and Hong Sang-soo are really major directors. Hong [below, leading the way for Huppert at Berlinale] is for me a genius. He makes films quickly; A Traveller’s Needs took 13 days.”

That’s why you can make so many movies?

“Yes!”

Are you going to work again in the English language?

“Yes, I want to do this film in the States. I can’t talk about it, because for the moment it’s still coming together.”

You have acted three times with your daughter, Lolita Chammah. Would you like to do that again?

“I would love to, sure. But on Michele Placido’s film, Caravaggio’s Shadow, we didn’t have any scenes together. Actually, we never were on set on the same day. But she’s really great in the film. She’s brilliant.”

Lolita Chammah and Isabelle Huppert in Copacabana

Are you performing on the stage?

“I’m rehearsing a play, Berenice, with Romeo Castellucci and I have an opening night in four days’ time. We start in Montpellier, in the south of France and then we bring it to Paris at the beginning of March at the Theatre de la Ville. And then I will bring it to Milano, to the Piccolo.”

And the UK?

“In the UK, I will bring another production with Robert Wilson called Mary Said which I did many, many times already. I will do that at the Barbican at the beginning of May.”

Wow! You don’t work too much?

“No, because in the meantime April will be free.”

What is it about Robert Wilson that you like so much? Do you feel a greater freedom when you’re on the stage?

“I never really feel free [with Wilson], but I feel free with Romeo Castellucci. He’s an amazing visionary. He makes something completely unusual and very, very special, but within this world which is so strong and so powerful. I think I feel completely myself. And when you see the show, you will understand how much myself I am, but I’m not going to tell you more.”

Still, Robert Wilson is a master.

“Yes. Of course. He’s really a major director.”

When you work with him, it’s not really English in some ways, is it? It’s Robert Wilson.

“It’s Robert Wilson, yes. He has his own language. No English, no French. You’re absolutely right. That’s what makes him so powerful. It’s a Robert Wilson language. That’s it.”

‘Euphoria’ Season 3: Cast Member Reveals They ‘Don’t F**king Know’ When Filming Begins

Euphoria will return for season 3, but filming has yet to start as of March 2024. Euphoria has become one of HBO’s biggest hits, so it’s no surprise that the show quickly got the green light for season 3. There was a long wait between the first 2 seasons, and season 3 has now been delayed due to the ongoing writers’ and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The cast and crew are also grieving the heartbreaking loss of cast member Angus Cloud, who died on July 31 at the age of 25.

In November 2023, HBO network chief Casey Bloys revealed premiere date news for Euphoria season 3. Unfortunately, the third season’s premiere date is well over a year away.

Sam [Levinson], Zendaya, and the entire cast and crew of Euphoria have taken season 2 to extraordinary heights, challenging narrative convention and form, while maintaining its heart. We couldn’t be more honored to work with this gifted, wildly talented team or more excited to continue our journey with them into season 3,” Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, said in a statement.

The show has become so huge that it’s officially HBO’s most-watched show behind Game of Thrones, with per-episode viewership for season 2 averaging over 16 million viewers. In addition to being a rating juggernaut, Euphoria is the most tweeted-about show of the decade. During the show’s massive second season, HBO and the cast revealed on February 4, 2022, with a simple video that the show would return for a third season. Hollywood Life has rounded up all the latest news about the release date, plot details, and more that you need to know.

‘Euphoria’ Season 3 Premiere Date

HBO has not announced Euphoria’s season 3 release date. However, HBO boss Casey Bloys announced that Euphoria season 3 would be premiering in 2024, according to Variety. The show was included in a sizzle reel, along with The Last of Us and The White Lotus, of shows that are “coming in 2025.”

“Euphoria is one of those that we had begun writing in tandem with post-production on Idol but at this point, we don’t have countless scripts,” Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama, told Deadline. “We can’t start shooting, so the delivery of that show — ideally in 2025 — will be determined on when we can pick back up with Sam, who at this point is all pencils down and just finishing posts on Idol.”

Zendaya

The show’s production delay came due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. When asked about a potential 2024 release date, Zendaya told Entertainment Tonight at the show’s For Your Consideration event in April 2022: “I think that might be true. I honestly don’t know. There [are] some executives that know better than me, you might wanna ask them. I’m gonna be busy for a while.”

In February 2023, Vogue revealed in a Maude Apatow profile that season 2 was “not scheduled to begin shooting until the latter half of 2023.” Maude admitted that she doesn’t know “a single thing” about season 3. “We should be getting scripts and hearing about next season soon-ish, but I’m totally in the dark!” she added.

The following year, Nika King — who plays Leslie Bennet, the mother of Zendaya’s character, Rue — shared a TikTok video of herself on stage, revealing that she didn’t know when Euphoria was returning despite being asked by fans.

“Season 3 is coming out … I don’t f–king know,” Nika said to a laughing audience. “Don’t ask me. I don’t know. It’s one of those things. People are like, ‘We need season 3.’ I’m like, ‘Bitch, I need season 3, too!’ I haven’t paid my rent in six months, and Zendaya’s over in Paris at Fashion Week. I’m like, ‘Bitch, come home! I need you. Mama need you.’”

The first season premiered in June 2019, and season 2 didn’t premiere until almost 3 years later in January 2022 because of COVID-19 delays. There will likely be another 3-year wait between seasons 2 and 3. Filming is expected to begin sometime in 2023, but that could be pushed depending on the length of the writers’ strike.

Euphoria Season 3 Cast

Zendaya is confirmed to return as Rue. The actress reportedly “just closed a big re-negotiation” and will earn $1 million per episode in season 2, according to Puck.

Additional cast members who are almost a sure thing for season 3 are Hunter Schafer as Jules, Maude Apatow as Lexi, Sydney Sweeney as Cassie, Jacob Elordi as Nate, Alexa Demie as Maddy, Storm Reid as Gia, Nika King as Leslie, and Colman Domingo as Ali.

On August 24, 2022, Barbie Ferreira revealed that she would not be returning for season 3. She confirmed she was leaving the show via Instagram Story. Barbie played Kat Hernandez for the first 2 seasons.

“After 4 years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary-eyed goodbye,” Barbie wrote. “I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today. I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you, Katherine Hernandez.”

Barbie posted a picture of a drawing by her co-star Hunter Schafer. The drawing was of her character in Euphoria.

While there was some speculation about Zendaya’s longevity on the show and the possibility that could be killed off, HBO’s Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys set the record straight. “It’s hard to imagine doing [the] show without her, But, again, that would be something [for] her and Sam to discuss,” Casey told TVLine. He also added, “She’s going to be in season 3.”

Dominic Fike, who joined the cast in season 2 as Elliot, said on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that fans should “absolutely” expect to see him again in Euphoria season 3. Dominic is also a musician and has been given the opportunity to decide if (or when) his character will exit the series.

“Sam was always giving me the option to leave. He was like, ‘Whenever you want to go be a musician, dude, you let me know, I’ll kill you [and write you off the show],’” Dominic told GQ.

Season 2 ended with what appeared to be Ashtray’s death during a police shootout. However, Javon “Wanna” Walton isn’t giving up all hope that we could see Ash again someday.

Javon Walton

“Well, you see [Fez] get arrested, so I’m sure he is going to be in the back of a cop car. And with Ashtray, we’re not 100 percent if he’s dead, because you saw absolutely no blood, right? And you didn’t see him fall. You did hear the bullet, but you didn’t see him get shot. So, there [are] little things that could potentially bring him back for another season,” Javon told Entertainment Weekly.

Months later in August 2022, Javon seemed to have come to the conclusion that Ash didn’t make it out of the raid alive. “I do think Ash is dead,” Javon admitted to ET. “As much as I loved EuphoriaI’ve moved on.”

Eric Dane fully believes Cal will be back for season 3. “There’s gonna be redemption,” he told Variety. “I mean, that’s the trajectory he’s on. I can’t imagine Cal’s life from solitary confinement. It’s tough to work Cal into the storyline when he’s behind bars.”

The entire cast is incredibly busy at the moment, which is why the show hasn’t immediately started filming season 3. Zendaya is finishing up filming Challengers and will soon begin filming the Dune sequel. Sydney recently wrapped filming National Anthem with Halsey and is set to star in the upcoming Sony Marvel movie Madame Web.

Hunter was just cast in The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, while Jacob has several films in the works.

As for Zendaya’s beau Tom Holland, a cameo appearance on Euphoria still hasn’t officially happened yet. The Spider-Man: No Way Home star has expressed his wish to appear on the hit teen series at some point. “I have been petitioning for this for a long time, and it has not happened yet and I’m very disappointed. I must have come to visit Euphoria at least 30 times this season,” Tom told IMDb when talking about season 2.

He stressed, “I want to be on Euphoria!” Zendaya responded, “Ok, let me talk to some people.” Many fans believed they spotted Tom in the audience during Lexi’s play in season 2, and Zendaya has remained coy about whether it not it was really Tom. “Could be. Could be true. Can’t confirm or deny. The world may never know,” the actress told Access.

Angus Cloud’s Death

Angus Cloud passed away suddenly on July 31, 2023, at the young age of 25. His family released a statement announcing his death: “It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today. As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways. Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss. The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend. Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence.”

They concluded with, “We hope the world remembers him for his humor, laughter and love for everyone. We ask for privacy at this time as we are still processing this devastating loss.”

Angus was mourned by his Euphoria cast mates, as well as creator Sam Levinson. “There was no one quite like Angus. He was too special, too talented and way too young to leave us so soon. He also struggled, like many of us, with addiction and depression,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. “I hope he knew how many hearts he touched. I loved him. I always will. Rest in peace and God Bless his family.”

HBO released a statement via social media as well: “We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Angus Cloud. He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and Euphoria family. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time.”

Nearly a year before his death, Angus revealed that he was excited to start working on season 3. “I can’t wait to get back to work with everyone,” Angus told E! News at the time. “I feel like it’s been way too long. I just can’t wait to see everyone and working on set again.” At the time, he admitted was “not sure what to expect” when it came to Fezco’s storyline in season 3. He added, “But knowing [Euphoria creator] Sam [Levinson], it will be good.”

How Did Season 2 End?

Euphoria season 2 ended in a dramatic fashion, with Lexi’s play reaching its climax. Cassie stormed the stage after getting dumped by Nate and had a full-blown breakdown in front of the audience. Lexi and Cassie’s mom ultimately had to break up the fight between the sisters on stage. Maddy ended up running to the stage to confront Cassie, and Cassie ran out of the auditorium with Maddy chasing after her.

Cassie revealed to Maddy that Nate broke up with her, and Maddy wasn’t the least bit surprised. “Don’t worry, this is just the beginning,” Maddy told Cassie.

Alexa Demie

While the drama went down at the high school, Nate drove to his father’s construction site to settle the score once and for all. Nate admitted that he found Cal’s stash of sex tapes when he was only 11, and the footage he saw caused irreparable damage. Cal apologized for what he put Nate through, but his apology fell on deaf ears.

Nate was determined to get his revenge and pulled out a flash drive that was full of Cal’s sexual encounters over the years. Nate watched as his father was arrested by the police.

Jacob Elordi
Jacob Elordi and Hunter Schafer as Nate and Jules. (HBO)

A flashback revealed that Rue went to visit Elliot days before the play. She admitted that he saved her life. Elliot played a song for Rue and asked if they could be friends again. Rue brought up the fact that Elliot told her they were bad for each other, and Elliot didn’t disagree with that.

After Lexi’s play was over, Jules told Rue that she loved her and missed her. Rue said nothing but gave Jules a kiss on the forehead. Rue’s voiceover revealed that she was able to stay sober through the end of the school year.

As for Fezco, he tried with all his might to make it to Lexi’s play, but it just wasn’t meant to be. Faye was able to clue Fezco in on Custer working with the police just as he was about to leave. Ashtray went off script and stabbed Custer in the neck. Fezco realized that the police were going to be there any minute, so he put his fingerprints on the knife to make it look like he killed Custer.

Angus Cloud

Ashtray refused to let Fezco take the blame for Custer and Mouse’s death, so he locked himself in the bathroom with guns. The police broke down Fez’s door and began shooting. Fezco got shot and begged Ashtray to surrender. The police broke down the bathroom door and found Ashtray seemingly unconscious on the floor. Ashtray then popped up and killed the officer.

After that, the camera went to Fezco’s face, and a single gunshot was heard off-camera. Fezco and Faye were arrested, with Fezco’s unopened letter to Lexi lying on the floor.

What Will Happen in Season 3?

Seasons 1 and 2 both consisted of 8 episodes. The third season is expected to have 8 episodes as well, but HBO has not confirmed the official number as of yet. Plot details for Euphoria season 3 are being kept under wraps, but you can expect a continuation of the storylines from the end of season 2.

For Zendaya’s Elle September 2023 cover story, Sam revealed that he is envisioning season 3 as a “film noir.” Through Rue, the showrunner plans to “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”

The show will likely address Angus’ absence. Since Fezco was arrested at the end of season 2, he could be in prison offscreen. Prior to his death, Angus still had hope for his character. “Everyone can change, you know? He’s just a survivor. He’s going to figure out how to make the best of situations,” the actor told The Hollywood Reporter. He also noted that Fez is “going to have some time to sit and think” about what happened to Ashtray, hinting at Fez’s future possibly behind bars.

Cassie showed a whole new side of herself when she had a meltdown over Lexi’s play. Her on-again, off-again relationship with Nate is far from over, and Sydney wants to explore more of “evil” Cassie in the future. “There was a bit of Cassie that I got to play with when she started saying that she’s crazier than Maddy in a scene with Nate. And she kind of got a little more evil and dark and serious, and not so frantic. I would love to play with more of that streak within herself,” Sydney told Variety.

Maddy and Cassie’s longtime friendship was destroyed after Maddy found out Cassie was hooking up with Nate behind her back. “We obviously end with Maddy and Cassie’s gorgeous friendship shattered. So, that leaves one to question whether or not they will reconnect, [if the] female friendship will thrive or if they will just never talk to each other again,” Alexa told Entertainment Tonight.

Alexa also weighed in on Maddy’s personal journey in season 3. “Maddy is extremely internal and reflecting on a lot of what has gone down between the two people she cared about and thought cared about her,” she said. “I think she’s figuring out where to go next and finding more independence.”

As for Jacob, he’s expecting Sam Levinson to completely shock him with Nate’s turn in season 3. “Given the change in the second season, I’d imagine [season 3] would just be a complete shock again,” he revealed to Entertainment Tonight. “It could just be like a completely new show again.” Could Nate and Jules become friends — for real this time — after he gave her the tape of her sexual encounter with Cal? Anything is possible, really.

After a gut-wrenching season for Rue, Zendaya believes there’s “hope” for Rue in season 3. “We carried her all the way to hopefully what is rock bottom and a dark moment, and hopefully by the end leave with a sense of happiness and joy that there is hope for her in the end,” she told Variety.

Colman revealed that Ali will likely get some backstory in the third season. “I’ve had some small conversations with Sam [Levinson], and I know that he’s going to take some big swings because he’s that kind of an artist. The moment you’re comfortable with the show, he’s got to pull the rug out from under you just a little bit,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “I think he really wants to unpack Ali. Show some backstory.” This post will be updated as more Euphoria season 3 details become available.

Joey Graziadei Bachelor Eliminations: Who Got Sent Home?

In a nice change of pace, Joey Graziadei has earned rave reviews during his time as the Bachelor.

The charismatic tennis instructor has a talent for squashing drama and never losing sight of the fact that he’s there to find love.

But with his group of potential wives narrowed down to the final four, Joey G. found himself facing some difficult decisions during the all-important hometown round.

And after meeting the families of his remaining contestants, Joey was forced to say farewell to a fan favorite.

Joey Graziadei Elimations: Who Went Home During His Eighth Week as Bachelor?

The hometown round is one of the toughest tests for any Bachelor.

Last night saw Joey traveling to four very different regions to meet four very different families.

The episode was capped off with an emotional rose ceremony, during which Joey made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Maria.

Maria said that she wanted to share her true feelings for Joey during their visit to her family home in Ontario, but when the time came to do so, she froze.

“I feel very strong about you and I know I have and it continues to grow, that’s for sure. I appreciate you being here,” said a flustered Maria.

She attempted to make things right by pulling Joey aside ahead of the rose ceremony.

“Saying goodbye to you the way that I did, I feel like I didn’t do it in the best way,” Maria said to Joey.

“‘Cause I told you I can see myself falling in love with you and the thing is, I can’t, because, like, I am falling in love with you.”

Alas, it was too little, too late, and Joey offered roses to Daisy, Kelsey, and Rachel, who will now advance to the fantasy suite round.

It was the latest in a long line of difficult decisions for Joey:

Joey Graziadei Elimations: Who Went Home In His Seventh Week as Bachelor?

After enjoying the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Montreal, the remaining contestants set out to see a very different side of Canada in scenic Jasper National Park in Alberta.

Tensions were at an all-time high, as the six women knew that only four of them would be continuing on to the all-important Hometown dates.

It was a tense trip, as Joey clashed with Maria and declined to give out a group date rose.

But despite the tension, Maria made the cut, along with Daisy, Rachel Nance, and Kelsy A.

That means, of course, that two of the women were sent packing, including the charismatic Jenn Tran.

Jenn is a physician assistant student from Hillsdale, New Jersey, and while she may not have won Joey’s heart, she was quite popular with viewers.

Kelsey Toussant, another fan favorite, was also sent home last night.

An actress from Inglewood, California, Kelsey won over Bachelor Nation when she shared her heartbreaking story about how her father cut ties with her when she enrolled in college in violation of his religious beliefs.

Fortunately, with roles in Barbie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and How I Met Your Father to her name, Kelsey has a bright future ahead of her.

All-in-all it was another taxing week for Joey, but with just four women remaining, he’s that much closer to finding his match (tennis pun intended).

And by now, the guy is probably used to saying emotional goodbyes.

Let’s take a look at how we got to this point…

Joey Graziadei Elimations: Who Went Home In His Sixth Week as Bachelor?

Joey and the remaining ladies decamped for Montreal in week six, and while Maria and Jesse Palmer both showed off their bilingual abilities, Joey used plain English to say goodbye to several contestants.

The trip took some surprising turns, with two of the ladies departing early, one of them of her own volition.

And after all that, there was a rose ceremony where two more contestants said au revoir.

Yes, it was another difficult week, but Joey remains committed to the task of finding his mixed doubles partner!

First, Jess Edwards got sent packing in what might be the most brutal breakup of the season so far.

Jess was gaga for Joey, but the feeling simply wasn’t mutual, and he made an impromptu decision to kick her to the curb.

Later in the episode, Lexi Young walked away in a show of maturity and self-awareness that we rarely see on this show.

She knew that Joey wanted a long engagement and that he hoped to be married for a few years before welcoming children.

Because she’s experienced health issues that could affect her fertility, Lexi was hoping for a shorter timeline — and so, she walked away with no hard feelings.

During the rose ceremony, Joey bid adieu to two more contestants, Katelyn DeBacker and Lea Cayanan.

Lea Cayanan appears in a promotional photo for ABC's The Bachelor.

The elimination of Lea is good news for her rival, Maria, who might have just moved into the frontrunner spot.

Whatever the case, with just six women remaining, we’re really in the homestretch now!

Joey Graziadei Elimations: Who Went Home In His Fourth Week as Bachelor?

The war between Maria and Sydney had been raging since week one, but last night, it finally came to an end in abrupt fashion.

Joey Graziadei stands on a balcony during his trip to Malta.

After listening to both ladies tell their side of the story, Joey hosted a winner-take-all two-on-one date:

The winner would receive the first rose of Malta, and the loser would be eliminated.

Thankfully, in an outcome that had every sane viewer breathing a sigh of relief, Sydney “Can I Talk to Your Manager?” Gordon was sent home to her cats.

And frankly, we can’t help but feel a little sorry for those poor felines.

Sydney looks unhappy during a rose ceremony on The Bachelor.

Joey mase the right call, and we’d like to say that that was the end of the most pointless feud in Bachelor history.

But sadly, Lea has decided to pick up where Sydney left off by bullying Maria for no reason.

Canadians like Maria might be at an unfair disadvantage in cutthroat competitions like this one due to their innate politeness.

Joey Graziadei Elimations: Who Went Home In His Third Week as Bachelor?

The feud between Maria and Sydney also dominated the previous week’s episode, but at the end of that one, both women received roses and proceeded to the next round.

However, three other ladies were not so lucky.

First, we bid farewell to Starr Skyler, a mental health counselor from Delray Beach, Florida, who enjoys spicy margaritas and showing off her Britney Spears impression.

Starr, we hardly knew ye.

Another promising contestant who did not receive a rose in week three was Chrissa Perez.

The 26-year-old from Abbotsford, British Columbia was one of four Canadian contestants in Joey’s original pool of contestants.

Hopefully, her dismissal won’t result in some sort of international incident.

Finally, we had 28-year-old San Antonio native Evalin Clark, who might have been the night’s most surprising elimination.

Evalin’s competitive spirit caught Joey’s eye in week two when she leaped over a table during a round of bridal musical chairs.

She demonstrated that same will to victory when she showed off some impressive tennis skills as part of Team Lobster and Butter.

Alas, it seems that in the end, Joey just wasn’t feeling a connection with Evalin.

Hey, at least she can blame her elimination on Maria and Sydney for hogging the spotlight and messing up the pool party!

Joey Graziadei Elimations: Who Went Home In His Second Week as Bachelor?

The previous week, one contestant, Lauren, decided to bow out of the competition for personal reasons.

Her father had passed away just seven months prior to filming, and the wedding-themed group date wound up taking an emotional toll.

Lauren bid a tearful goodbye to Joey but reminded him that they might see each other again during the hometown round, as her sister is still in the competition!

After a testy cocktail party that featured plenty of anxiety and a fight that Maria rightly deemed “dumb,” Joey hosted his second rose ceremony.

He says it’s his least favorite part of the job, and the pain was written all over Joey’s face as the ceremony concluded, and he was forced to bid farewell to another three contestants.

First to say goodbye was Erika, a 25-year-old leasing agent from North Bergen, New Jersey.

Next came Marlena, a 26-year-old finance writer from West Palm Beach.

And finally, Joey parted ways with Taylor, a 23-year-old recruiter from Chicago.

Rose ceremonies are always a bittersweet occasion, but Joey surely went into this knowing that he would have to break a few hearts.

It’s a little earlier to start making predictions, but some of the contestants, like the charmingly eccentric Maria, have emerged as immediate frontrunners.

But sadly, quite a few potential brides were sent home before they even got a chance to unpack during week one.

Joey Graziadei Eliminates Contestants: Who Got Sent Packing on ‘The Bachelor’ Week 1?

It couldn’t have been easy for Joey to make so many cuts just hours after meeting the women, but after a marathon cocktail party with a whole lot of strategizing, he winnowed the group down from 32 to 23.

First on the chopping block was Chandler, who was sent home despite how gloriously her name would have paired with Joey’s. (RIP, Matthew Perry!)

The 24-year-old graphic designer from New York made Joey laugh when they first met, but it seems the romantic connection just wasn’t there.

Next up was Kayla, a 27-year-old guidance counselor from Ohio who might have just been too nice for this competition.

It gets pretty cutthroat out there!

That brings us to Kyra, a 27-year-old paralegal from Miami.

She also seemed like a ball of sunshine, but apparently, she just wasn’t Joey’s cup of tea.

Maybe he prefers potential partners with a bit of an edge!

Also sent packing were Sandra, a 26-year-old cyber security consultant from Nashville, and Lanie, a 27-year-old realtor from Philadelphia.

Sam H., a 31-year-old CPA from Nashville was also sent home, as were Talyah, a 23-year-old esthetician from Huntington Beach, California, and Samantha, 25, a pro football cheerleader from Miami.

One of the most surprising cuts was Zoe, a 24-year-old artist from Atlanta who was knocked out of the competition despite becoming an early fan favorite.

Not that Joey had any way of knowing if any he sent home would wind up being popular with viewers.

But hey, maybe Zoe can take advantage of the boost in her social media followers to sell more of her art.

Whatever the case, Joey has made it clear that he’s there to find a wife, not just to gain fame and hook up with a bunch of strangers.

It’ll be a grueling process, as it always is, but maybe the tennis pro from PA can help turn the show’s losing streak around.

‘The Bachelor’ Stars Who Have Married – And Stayed That Way!

Of the 27 men who have handed out roses as the Bachelor, only three are still with the partner to whom they proposed, and only one of those couples (Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici) ever made it down the aisle.

Gerry Turner marries Theresa Nist

Of course, the boomer-based spin-off series The Golden Bachelor is currently batting 1.000, as stars Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist got married this month just weeks after fans swooned at Gerry’s proposal.

So maybe the women who were sent home by Joey last night can take comfort in the knowledge that the Bachelor process only works when the dude giving out flowers is over 70!

Artist Santanu Hazarika: My rebellion is more like a silent scream today

“As a teen, I aspired to own a piece of limited edition collections but they were out of my reach. I want youngsters to be able to afford some of my creations,” says artist and illustrator Santanu Hazarika. The discussion here is about his recent capsule collection of 300 sneakers for Comet, all of which were sold out within two hours of the launch. He intends to roll out special edition collections in collaboration with brands and sees this as an extension of his art portfolio. “Not everyone might be able to afford my paintings but they can buy the shoes or jerseys I design. These might be limited-edition pieces but are within an affordable range. There is an emotional value attached to owning a piece of art and to me, that holds greater value than the price tag.”

Santanu was recently in Hyderabad for the Red Bull Soapbox Race India 2024. A decade ago, the Red Bull World Doodle Art Championship changed the tide for him when he won the contest held in Cape Town, South Africa. Incidentally, that was his first international trip. The Guwahati-born graphic artist recalls, “I was doing badly in my final year of engineering. I took my selection for the world championship as my calling card and was excited to be able to travel; that itself was a prize.” He saw the championship as an opportunity to prove that doodling could take him to places. “Winning the championship gave me the confidence to pursue art as a career.”

Read to inspire

His artwork for that contest was a summary of the essence of Devdutt Pattanaik’s book, 7 Secrets of Vishnu. He spent more time reading books on psychology, philosophy and mythology rather than engineering course material. The artist, whose name is today recognised in the sphere of modern art, says reading is a part of his research rather than a leisure pursuit. “I read with a focus to get something out of it.” He is currently reading Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter and is fascinated by how the book explores an intersection of art, science, architecture, mathematics, evolution and free will stemming from the work of mathematician and philosopher Kurt Gödel, graphic artist MC Escher and composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

Reflecting on his journey, Santanu says, “If I can, I would tell my younger self to be patient. I used to seek instant validation and would get impatient when I did not get an expected outcome. I have learnt that it may take 10 or 20 years to see the desired outcome.”

Growing up in Guwahati during times of unrest when people were under watch was not easy, he recalls. His art, which began with him replicating comic books, fuelled his visual expression and gave him the license to dream. His angst made him question the status quo and rebel, which in turn reflected in his art. “A friend of mine explained recently,” says Santanu, “that a part of me is still a rebel but now it is not about what I do but how I do it. If I have to get from point A to B, I will not do it the regular way but think out of the box. I do not like being normal; my art, the way I dress, the music I listen to… everything is curated,” he says about his search for a distinct identity.

Silent scream

The rebellious streak in him, he explains, works today like “a silent scream” rather than being “explosive” as before. “I do not like stereotypes and maybe that’s why my art is tough to box into definitions. What I practice is not fine art, not only digital… There is a sense of mystique to it.”

While his art is experimental and he uses varied mediums, it often begins with the basics — putting pen to paper. “There is a sense of belonging and nostalgia about using pen and paper. Ballpoint pens and papers were all that I could afford growing up.” In his large studio in Mumbai, he is currently working on a new series of charcoal and acrylic on paper artworks. “Charcoal artworks are usually of smaller sizes, but I am working on 5X5 and 6X5 artworks.”

Some of his art is inspired by personal memories. One of his recent charcoal and acrylic artworks titled, Please Don’t Fight, harks back to childhood memories. “When a child grows up in an unsettling atmosphere, he or she is likely to go numb and shut out even the good emotions. Not every child will channel the angst into art.”

Santanu remembers wanting to fight against the conditions he grew up in and finding solace in heavy metal music, “It questions everything and tells you to do things your way. Heavy metal music is the core of my inspiration. Why do artists need to look a certain way? Why can’t we be celebrated like movie stars or cricketers given that we also put so much thought into our work? These are questions I continue to have.”

Santanu begins a typical day with a workout and then heads to his studio. When he begins a new painting, he is more likely to complete it the same day. “I know I will not continue to work on it the following day. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and that, perhaps, drives me to finish a task the same day.”

Poster art

In 2023, Santanu Hazarika designed an artwork to complement the Telugu film Dasara, directed by Srikanth Odela and starring Nani. It was a one-off collaboration for which he was approached by Nani. “It was a fun assignment,” recalls Santanu. “I am game to design fun posters for films inspired by their narratives.”

Freedom to experiment

While he collaborates with several brands, he reckons that he looks at these assignments as a commercial means to an end while ensuring his creative freedom. “I need to survive for my art to survive. I need that money for my large studio space. Since my work resonates with the core audience, brands understand that my art has made me what I am.”

When he sets out to do an artwork, he has a skeletal structure in mind but keeps it flexible. “I surprise myself,” he says. A case in point is his take on Mona Lisa. He was painting Mona Lisa and later, splashed the black acrylic cleaning water onto the surface of the painting, masking some of her features. “I looked at the painting and thought about what was missing. We couldn’t see her teeth and the smile. So I painted the dentures separately on the black surface.” At what point does an artwork come to a close? “When I run out of space or I am physically tired. As simple as that,” he says with a laugh.

Among the several projects on cards, Santanu is collaborating with Global eSports and is working on redesigning the team jerseys. A self-confessed fan of video games, he says some of his art also draws inspiration from the narratives of video games.

An eye on direction

A long-term focus is also on learning the ropes of filmmaking. Having directed the music videos Monster Machine and She’s a Hero featuring his partner and actor Shruti Haasan, he says their production house BLCK looks to venture into short and long-format films in the near future. Acknowledging that direction is about people management as opposed to working solo as an artist, Santanu says he is on a learning curve.

He also directed the intro for the Amazon Prime Video series Bestseller. “It was one of the most watched intros on the platform. It sounds like a simple task but it is a challenge to create a first impression of the series with an intro.” To draw an analogy, directing an intro works like an author trying to get readers interested in the opening paragraph.

“Direction is like a giant wedding where you need to control the whole environment and get your desired output. I shall get there,” says Santanu, adding that the experience of working with crews for art events comes in handy. “I have worked with crews as an organiser and an artist and understand the importance of being hands-on to get tasks done.”

Naangal Review: Dispassionate Yet Profoundly Moving Film Hits Home With Phenomenal Force

A still from Naangal.

Epic in length – it has a runtime of nearly four and a half hours – but squarely focused on the minutiae of the life of three boys and their excessively stern father, Naangal (This Is Us) is an exceptional piece of cinema. Calling it a piece of anything would be somewhat incongruous – it is far larger than that.

Naangal – the Tamil film is part of the Asian Cinema Competition at the ongoing 15th Bengaluru International Film Festival – is a striking and sweeping collage of innumerable shards of memory, mostly unsettling, collated and rendered in the form stunning images underwired by a fantastic background score and strung together with impressive skill and imagination.

Written, directed, shot and edited by Avinash Prakash, Naangal has the look of a work helmed by a seasoned director. But it is a debut film. A deeply personal essay, its length is bound to be commented on. What is important is that the time that Naangal takes to tell a story that spans about a decade seems completely justified. Growing up is never easy particularly when home isn’t what it is meant to be – sweet home.

Opening with a title card that refers to the Welsh notion of hiraeth, Naangal explains it as homesickness for a home you cannot return to or one that never existed. It tells the semi-autobiographical story of the director’s own childhood spent on an estate in Ooty in a home devoid of true sustained happiness.

The focus is on the three siblings. How things pan out for them is entirely contingent on their taskmaster-father who makes no concessions for any transgressions. One of the boys gets slapped for buying honey candy. Another is hit because he fails in all his six subjects.

There is no room in this suffocating world for missteps. One person says: Education is freedom, freedom to think. The father in Naangal may pay lip service to that notion, but when it comes to practice. that is the last thing that he is wont to believe.

With a cast of newcomers who blend completely into the film’s ambience, Naangal is an affecting portrait of a father who is convinced that he means well. He loves his three sons to the point of feeling no qualms about inflicting emotional wounds on them in his attempts to discipline them and prepare them for the challenges of life.

The father, Rajkumar (debutant Abdul Rafe), resorts to ruthless methods of parenting. But he is anything but a monster. He does, if only rarely, feel a twinge of remorse or express regret for being overly strict. Give me another chance, I will bring your childhood back, he says to his sons in one such moment of ‘weakness’. But does he really mean it?

It is his failures as a man, a father and an entrepreneur that impact the way he treats his sons – Karthik (Mithun V.), Gautam (Nithin D.) and Dhruv (Rithik M.). He alternates between suffocating concern and outright corrosiveness, leaving his children in a constant state of dread.

The fear of the father is accentuated by the setting – a bungalow in the hills that is without water and electricity. Rajkumar has not been able to pay the bills for months. On dark nights, there is thunder and lightning that rattle the windows and send gloomy streaks of light into the rooms. Two of the siblings play practical pranks on the third one who is petrified of spectres in the shadows.

But there is nobody that the boys are more afraid of than their father. He is spoken of in hushed tones. We see the man reflected in mirrors or obstructed by objects. He looms over the home even when we do not see him and fear is writ large on the boys every time he speaks.

Alternating between colour and black & white and filmed entirely in natural light, Naangal is set in the 1990s. The boys’ mother Padma (Prarthana Srikaanth) isn’t around. The reason for her absence is revealed as the film unfolds at a pace and with a rhythm that approximates the general nature of the fraught existence for the three boys.

The home they that live in is joyless especially when dad is in a foul mood. The man’s demeanour borders on the unreasonable. He makes the boys clean the house, wake up before dawn to fetch water for drinking and bathing and polish his shoes, besides running errands to buy vegetables and grocery.

Cooking isn’t among the family’s daily chores. They live off bread and butter. It is repeatedly suggested that Raj, owing to the financial straits he is in, cannot put proper food on the table for his boys. Life goes on for the family, with the drama being provided by Rajkumar’s bursts of fury and the boys’ cowering response to his terrible mood swings.

Rajkumar’s tea, strawberry and potato plantations have stopped yielding profits. He has not paid the salaries of the teachers of the school he owns. Despite his pretence of control, his personal life is in a shambles. The boys bear the brunt of his inadequacies.

Not that there are no respites available to the boys. They watch Baby’s Day Out in a local cinema hall, borrow comics – everything from Phantom to Tintin – from the library and, especially when is dad is away, play with their pet – Kathy (Roxy), a male German Shepherd with a female name.

The dog, usually kept confined to a kennel behind the bungalow, figures in two important flashpoints in the film – one of them contains the first signs of resistance from the eldest son, the other causes great grief to all the four members of the family. But Naangal is not the kind of film that follows up on these turning points with more scenes marked by dramatic flourish. It is interested only in revealing the inner dynamics of dysfunctionality rather than playing them out in the open.

One of the boys sings a Tamil song about a King as he scrubs the toilet bowl. Dad walks in and demands to know if it is 100 per cent clean. It is 92 per cent clean, the boy pipes up, knowing full well no matter what he does his father will continue to find fault with his work.

When rage does not get the better of him, Rajkumar is the father figure he wants to be. He takes the boys out for dinner and even to a movie. The title that they choose – Toy Soldiers, a 1991 film – isn’t without significance. The American film was about an all-male boarding school taken over by terrorists.

The house where Karthik, Gautham and Dhruv live is an all-male space where after nightfall the only sources of light are hurricane lamps, candles and the fireplace. During the day, light streams into the house through the windows only to dissipate as soon as the father steps into the frame. Colour ebbs away instantly.

The individual who could have been the brightest spot in the household, Rajkumar’s wife, is conspicuous by her absence. She is not by her side to share the responsibility of keeping the house in order and raising the children. Her not being there is a crucial part of the reason why the boys have no cushion at all.

At one point in the film, at the turn of the millennium, the mother returns briefly. The film’s tone and texture change immediately. The home brightens up, the colours begin to glow again and the family has a proper meal after ages. It is rounded off with gulab jamun.

Naangal is a monumental achievement – a dispassionate yet profoundly moving film that hits home with phenomenal force.

Jenelle Evans FINALLY Leaves David Eason For Good! And Confirms He Murdered The Dog! – Perez Hilton

There’d been speculation, but… It sounds like this really is the beginning of the end for Jenelle Evans and David Eason.

According to reports, the Teen Mom 2 alum has filed for separation from her scary husband. In court docs she cites his “erratic” behavior as the reason behind the split.

The US Sun first uncovered the documents in a Monday afternoon report. Jenelle actually filed her court complaint way back on February 23, although it was not made public until now. In that complaint, she claims that she officially separated from David on February 16 “with the intent that the separation be permanent.” Wow!

Related: Jenelle Describes TERRIFYING Story Of ‘Random Stranger’ Trying To Break In!

The separation docs list out all the ways which David has exhibited what the MTV alum calls “concerning” and “disturbing” behavior during their marriage, including alleged “substance abuse problems” with alcohol and a “refusal” to work. Of course, she also mentions the worst — the infamous May 2019 incident in which he shot and killed the family’s dog Nugget in front of their now-7-year-old daughter Ensley:

“Throughout the duration of the marriage of the parties, the defendant has exhibited concerning and at times disturbing behavior towards the plaintiff. In May of 2019, Defendant shot and killed the family’s pet French Bulldog Nugget in front of the minor child.”

The separation docs also refer to David’s alleged assault on Jenelle’s 14-year-old son Jace late last year, noting:

“On or about September 28 of 2023, a report was made to medical professionals by plaintiff’s oldest minor child. … [David] was subsequently charged with misdemeanor child abuse and felony assault by strangulation.”

As we reported, Child Protective Services has since closed their case on Jenelle and David in regards to Jace. However, David is still facing felony charges for the alleged incident. Jenelle notes in the separation docs that David left the family home over the issue:

“Despite the voluntary dismissal of the underlying DSS proceedings, the defendant’s criminal case is still pending and the defendant is subject to several no-contact provisions in the aforementioned criminal case. Since the DSS case was voluntarily dismissed, and primary physical custody of [Jace] reverted back to plaintiff, defendant left the former marital residence at the behest of plaintiff so that [he] could return home with plaintiff and his siblings.”

Per the reality TV vet, David has since been living on her boat, which is docked in a nearby marina. It doesn’t sound like that’s going particularly well, though:

“Plaintiff has been spending his days drinking liquor at a bar near the marina.”

Uh…

And there’s more. For one, Jenelle claims David has not checked in on Ensley at all since their separation. Furthermore, he allegedly completely left his 16-year-old daughter Maryssa behind at Jenelle’s house once he fully vacated the residence. And he’s refusing to give Jenelle back the key to their mailbox, too! Thus, she’s unable to pick up important things like bills, medicine for Jace, and more! Jeez!! The docs stated:

“Defendant developed no plan for ensuring both of his biological minor children were cared for and offered plaintiff zero support and assistance with any of the minor children during this time.”

And even that isn’t all. Later in the separation docs, Jenelle claimed her estranged husband showed up at their rural North Carolina home on February 22 despite there being a no-contact order against him for Jace. Jenelle’s docs state Jace was “home, but not present during defendant’s show,” in which David allegedly harassed and verbally abused Jenelle:

“For the purpose of harassing or annoying plaintiff, defendant took plaintiff’s vehicle without her permission and told her to kill herself among other vile insults, which plaintiff filmed the interaction for her safety.”

She further went on to note alcohol is allegedly the root of David’s “erratic” behavior:

“Defendant has further committed marital misconduct in that he excessively uses alcohol and has not maintained consistent full-time employment for a number of years, has recklessly spent the party’s money which plaintiff solely earns, and in other ways to be shown at trial.”

That alleged abuse of alcohol included some unsettling habits on the part of Eason:

“During the marriage of the parties, defendant’s excessive use of alcohol was burdensome and rendered plaintiff’s life intolerable. Defendant would regularly drink and drive and spend excess money on alcohol — money which he does not earn and which could otherwise go toward the financial well-being of the minor children.”

Awful…

For the embattled mom, the number David has done on her reputation in public and with regards to career opportunities is pretty bad, too. She explained in the docs:

“Plaintiff has been a faithful and dutiful spouse to the defendant and has stuck by the defendant’s side through the criticism of millions of people across the world on social media, who voiced concern regarding the defendant’s behaviors. Defendant’s conduct has caused plaintiff employment compensation and degraded her public image.”

Now, she’s asking for primary physical custody of Ensley. She also wants child support from David. AND she’s requesting their property be distributed “in the form of an unequal distribution of assets in the plaintiff’s favor,” as she cites herself as the family breadwinner. That includes requesting the court allow her to keep the family’s home and rural acreage all for herself.

Related: Jace Reunites With Birth Father For First Time In YEARS — And He Has Sway On Custody??

That may not come without a fight, though. She noted in the docs how David has already been vocal about not wanting to give up “his” home:

“Defendant has made several statements that plaintiff cannot keep him from ‘his’ home. Plaintiff is in need of the sole use enjoyment and possession of the property for the benefit of plaintiff and the minor children and hereby request this court to enter an order sequestering the property for the benefit of plaintiff and the minor children.”

Per the US Sun, David was served with a copy of the complaint over a week ago, on February 23. Per the county clerk’s office, he has yet to file his response. This is all a lot, though. To hear her tell her side of things, it sure sounds like Jenelle and the kids have been living through hell. And frankly it ain’t that far from what we’ve been hearing for years either! Ugh.

Reactions, Perezcious readers?? Are you happy to finally see Jenelle get clear of this guy? Let us know in the comments (below)!

Is NSYNC Going on Tour? All About the Boy Band’s Reunion as Justin Timberlake Reveals Music Collab

View gallery

NSYNC fans rejoice! The beloved boy band reunited for their first new song in over 20 years. The group dropped “Better Place” as part of the Trolls Band Together soundtrack on September 29, 2023. While it’s not certain what other projects will come of the reunion, it’s certainly exciting to see Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick singing together again. Not only that, but the band collaborated on the song titled “Paradise” on Justin’s 2024 album, Everything I Thought I Was.

Along with the new music, fans are clamoring to see the boy band take the stage again! It’s been over a decade since the group’s last musical reunion, and it’s been even longer since their last full-blown tour. Lance did hint that there was some hope for an NSYNC reunion in an appearance in the online game show Rent FreeHollywood Life has all the details for you, below.

NSYNC announced that they’d release their first song in over 20 years on Sep. 14. (Erik Pendzich/Shutterstock)

NSYNC Reunite for New Music

Reports that NSYNC had gotten back in the studio for the new song had surfaced back in August. Before announcing the track, the boy band took the stage at the 2023 MTV VMAs to present Taylor Swift with the Best Pop award. “Over 20 years ago, we were just kids when we won Best Pop Video for ‘Bye Bye Bye.’ It was our first VMA, and it meant the world to us. It validated our hard work,” Justin said at the start of the presentation.

Ahead of the official track announcement, the band had lip-synced along to the audio from a Friends scene asking “Do you know something?” It was later revealed that “Better Place” would be a part of the Trolls Band Together soundtrack. Snippets of the band singing the new track can be heard in the trailer. Justin voices the Branch character in the movie.

Justin also dropped the track list for his 2024 album, which includes one collab with NSYNC titled “Paradise.”

Is NSYNC Going on Tour?

While nothing official has been announced, Lance did hint that he hoped to have more to tell fans in the near future during the Rent Free appearance, per Page Six“Look, we are talking about it — and I hope to have some good news, at some point,” he said when talking about the reunion.

Joey Fatone had spoken to Hollywood Life about the possibility of a reunion in an exclusive interview in November. He said that he hoped to have a definite answer for fans in the near future. “I don’t mind answering, because of the fact that hopefully soon, I will get an answer,” he said. “Whether it be yes, whether it be no, I hate saying, ‘I don’t know yet,’ but it is true.”

Joey also expressed some hope for a reunion so that his daughters could get to experience what the band was like. “My kids have never really seen me perform with NSYNC. So for people that are fans that grew up listening to us, I feel almost the same way. It sounds weird, but it is true because I want my kids to see what I did,” he said.

Earlier, Lance said that the quintet isn’t planning on a reunion tour, in an Entertainment Tonight  interview. As the interviewer mentioned that fans have been clamoring for a tour, he said that there’s nothing on the horizon. “Hopefully in a perfect world, that might happen one day, but again, no plans right now,” he said.

While there’s nothing set in stone, Lance did seem open to the idea. He admitted that the group were listening to the fans. “I’ve been telling the fans: we don’t have solid plans right now, because we’re waiting for the strike to end. We’ve got things to do, but they’re definitely shaping our future,” he told ET. Ahead of Lance’s interview, a report from TMZ said that they didn’t plan on touring, releasing an album, or doing a residency.

Most recently, Justin appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show on January 30, 2024, and confirmed that he and his pals have been working on new music together. “And also as it pertains to harmonies… I’ve spent some time with four other guys doing a lot of harmonies,” he said during the talk show appearance.

J.T. also touched on their 2023 reunion. “That was fun,” he said to Kelly Clarkson. “It’s kind of crazy, like, there’s so much that just picks up right where it left off as far as the chemistry.” Additionally, Justin reassured NSYNC fans that something is coming soon. “We’ve been in the studio, so there may be a little something in the future, too,” he added. Despite the exciting tease, Justin did not reveal if he and his bandmates will release a new album or if they will head on tour this year.

Earlier NSYNC Reunions

While NSYNC split up in 2005, the boy band has gotten together on a handful of occasions over the years for both musical and non-musical reunions. When Justin earned the Video Vanguard award at the 2013 MTV VMAs, the group was part of his medley performance, singing “Girlfriend” and “Bye Bye Bye.”  When the group was given a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 2018, they all got together for the ceremony and appeared on Ellen together.

The group has also had a few occasions that they’ve had partial reunions. All of the members except Justin joined Ariana Grande on stage for her 2019 headline set at Coachella, where they sang her song “Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” and their own “Tearin’ Up My Heart.” In April 2022, Joey, Lance, and Chris gave an impromptu performance at Ryan Cabrera and Alexa Bliss’ wedding.

When Was the Last Time NSYNC Toured?

While there have been a handful of performances since the group split up, the boy band’s final tour was in 2002 to promote their album Celebrity. The tour ended in April 2002, and the band began a hiatus, which they never returned from. The members’ final appearance as NSYNC was in 2005 at the “Challenge for the Children,” but they didn’t perform. They released a greatest hits album that same year.

While the band has not toured together in over 20 years, Justin has set out on numerous tours as a solo artist. His most recent time on the road was in 2019 for his The Man of the Woods tour.
