Palestinians brace for Rafah assault as Israel promises evacuation plan

DOHA/JERUSALEM — Israeli air strikes killed 17 people in Rafah on the Gaza border overnight, medics said on Saturday, as over a million Palestinians crammed into the city awaited a full-scale offensive with the rest of the enclave in ruins and nowhere left to run.

Four months into the war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said it had ordered the military to develop a plan to evacuate Rafah and destroy four Hamas battalions it says are deployed there.

The Israeli military said the air force killed two Hamas operatives in Rafah on Saturday.

Israel’s military ordered civilians to flee south before previous assaults on Gaza’s cities, but now there is no obvious place to go and aid agencies have said many people could die.

“Any Israeli incursion in Rafah means massacres, means destruction. People are filling every inch of the city and we have nowhere to go,” said Rezik Salah, 35, who fled from Gaza City for Rafah with his wife and two children early in the war.

A possible assault on Rafah prompted international concern, including posts on social media from British Foreign Secretary David Cameron and Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot.

“Deeply concerned about the prospect of a military offensive in Rafah — over half of Gaza’s population are sheltering in the area. The priority must be an immediate pause in the fighting to get aid in and hostages out, then progress towards a sustainable, permanent ceasefire,” Mr. Cameron said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Hard to see how large-scale military operations in such a densely populated area would not lead to many civilian casualties and a bigger humanitarian catastrophe. This is unjustifiable,” Ms. Bruins Slot said.

AIRSTRIKES
The conflict in Gaza began on Oct. 7 when Hamas gunmen stormed border defenses to attack Israeli towns, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel responded with a massive bombardment and ground offensive in which about 28,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed, according to medical authorities in Hamas-run Gaza.

The conflict has threatened to spread across the Middle East, with Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah regularly trading fire, and flare-ups in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

In Yemen, the Iranian-backed Houthi militia held a funeral on Saturday for at least 17 militants killed during joint US-British airstrikes, the Houthi-run Saba news agency said.

The Houthis have used drones to attack merchant ships since Nov. 19 in what they say is a response to Israel’s military operations in Gaza, prompting retaliatory strikes from Britain and the United States.

The US Central Command said its forces conducted self-defense strikes against Houthi missiles and drones on Saturday.

In Lebanon, an Israeli strike targeted a Palestinian figure close to Hamas, security sources said. The target survived but three others were killed, including a member of Hezbollah.

Much of Gaza has been reduced to rubble by Israeli airstrikes, artillery fire and controlled detonations. More than 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants have been left homeless.

Most of the displaced have sought shelter in Rafah, on the border with Egypt, but after fruitless ceasefire talks, Mr. Netanyahu this week said Israeli forces would fight on until “total victory.”

On Friday night an airstrike on a Rafah house killed 11 people and wounded dozens and a second strike killed six people in another house, medical officials said. Earlier on Saturday two separate Israeli airstrikes killed five members of the Hamas-run police force in Rafah, including a senior officer, Hamas and medics said.

In the other main southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, where many displaced people initially fled before an Israeli offensive last month, the Palestinian Health Ministry voiced alarm at Israeli operations around the main Nasser Hospital.

The ministry said Israeli forces had surrounded the hospital and were shooting in the vicinity, raising concerns about 300 medical staff, 450 patients and 10,000 people sheltering there.

Footage circulating on social media, which Reuters could not independently verify, showed tanks at the hospital gates.

Israel’s military said its forces were continuing intensive activities in Khan Younis as well as northern and central Gaza, killing militants, seizing weapons and striking infrastructure.

It did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the situation at Nasser hospital.

FIERCE FIGHTING
In Gaza City, the first major population center targeted after Israeli ground forces invaded in October, residents reported fierce fighting on Saturday.

Israel said its forces had discovered a tunnel network hundreds of meters (yards) long running partly under the Gaza City headquarters of UNRWA, the main relief agency for Palestinians.

The military said it was evidence of how Hamas had exploited UNRWA, which has launched an internal probe and seen some donor countries freeze funding over Israel’s allegations that 12 of its roughly 13,000 employees in the Gaza Strip had participated in the Oct. 7 attacks.

UNRWA said its staff left its headquarters in Gaza City on Oct. 12 following Israeli evacuation orders.

“We have not used that compound since we left it nor are we aware of any activity that may have taken place there,” It said.

An Israeli official who declined to be named said Israel would try to organize for people in Rafah to be moved back north ahead of any assault.

Egypt has said it will not allow any mass displacement of Palestinians into its territory. Palestinians fear Israel means to drive them from their homeland, then forbid their return.

The continued warfare in Gaza City, long after Israel said it was redeploying some troops to other areas, shows the limitations of any evacuation proposal.

Palestinian rescue workers in Gaza City said they had found the bodies of a six-year-old girl and her family members, along with the ambulance team sent to rescue them, days after an audio clip of her call to dispatchers begging for help was released. — Reuters

Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood? | CBC News

Noelene Lancastle grew up surrounded by 27 cousins and 10 second cousins. They were a range of ages and had what seemed like a world of experiences, always ready to teach her to skateboard or swim, help carry heavy boxes, play with her on camping trips or have her back in school in North Delta, B.C.

“There were always lots of kids around. You know how your parents dragged you around to houses? There were always some kids for us to play with that were somehow related to us,” Lancastle, 46, said from Vancouver.

It’s something her own children won’t experience.

Lancastle’s older brother and sister don’t have children and her husband is an only child. So Nicholas, 9, and Charlie, 7, don’t have any cousins at all — a growing trend as the decreasing fertility rate causes extended families to narrow over time, sociologists and demographers say.

Worldwide, families are shrinking, according to a kinship study published in December in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA. That study, using international demographic data for every country in the world, projected a 38 per cent global decline in living relatives for individuals aged 65 by the year 2095, compared to 1950.

The composition of family networks is also expected to change, with grandparents and great-grandparents living longer, but the number of cousins, nieces and nephews declining, the authors noted.

Lancastle, middle, plays with some of her cousins at a family reunion in Saskatchewan in the 1990s. (Submitted by Noelene Lancastle)

“Canadian children nowadays have fewer cousins than previous generations,” said Rania Tfaily, an associate professor in sociology at Carleton University in Ottawa who studies social demography and contemporary changes in marriage and family formation.

This isn’t a recent phenomena as fertility rates have been decreasing for some time, added Tfaily, who was not involved in the kinship study.

“However, what is striking nowadays is not just that the number of cousins is declining but also that an increasing number of children are growing up with no or very few cousins.”

And it’s part of the reason Lancastle decided to have two children, despite having them later in life.

“I could have been a one and done person,” she said. “But they would have no relatives that would be their age. So I wanted them to have each other, at least.”

Families are shrinking

Canadian data obtained by CBC News from the researchers of the kinship study projects that the average Canadian 15-year-old girl will have just 3.6 living cousins in the year 2095, compared to 15.3 in 1950 — a 76 per cent decrease in living cousins.

Using demographic data, the researchers computed kinship structures for every country in the world from 1950 to present, and then calculated projections to the year 2100. The model is based on a hypothetical person from the population, in this case, a woman of a specified age.

A Canadian woman aged 35 would have had about 20 living cousins in 1950, while a woman the same age would have half that — 10 living cousins — in 2020. By 2095, a Canadian woman aged 35 is projected to have just five living cousins, according to the data.

This narrowing of extended families tends not to get as much attention as research on the nuclear family, the new kinship study’s lead author, Diego Alburez-Gutierrez, told CBC News.

This may be because much of that research is conducted in and on Western populations, where there’s an assumption that extended kin “don’t matter as much,” said Alburez-Gutierrez, who leads the Research Group on Kinship Inequalities at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany.

But research has shown that extended family plays an important role in individuals’ lives in many cultures around the world, he added in an email interview.

“Disregarding cousins means that we ignore a ‘weak’ but important tie that individuals rely on for support and company at different stages of their lives.”

LISTEN | Why more Canadians are choosing not to have kids:

The Current18:28Why more Canadians are deciding not to have children

A growing number of Canadians are delaying parenthood or choosing not to have children at a time when Canada’s fertility rate is at an all-time low. The Current’s producer Kate Cornick looked into these decisions and the long-term implications.

Statistics Canada doesn’t specifically collect data on cousins, a spokesperson confirmed with CBC News.

But we do know the fertility rate is decreasing — currently the lowest on record, with a rate of 1.33 children per woman, according to Statistics Canada — and more people are choosing to have only one child.

According to the 2021 census, one-child families are the most common type in Canada, comprising 45 per cent of families with children that year (two child-families made up 38 per cent and three or more made up 16 per cent). The totals include one-parent families, common-law families and step-families.

This is a key factor in the cousin decline, said Prof. Yue Qian, an associate professor of sociology at the University of British Columbia whose research focuses on social demography.

“If this trend continues and more parents have only one child and stop at one child, their only child’s kid [or kids] won’t have cousins in the future,” Qian said.

Further, more people aren’t having children at all.

According to Statistics Canada, the proportion of women aged 50 and over who have no biological children is on the rise, at 17.4 per cent in 2022 compared to 14.1 per cent in 2001. In 2022, more than one-third of all people aged 15 to 49 said they intended to have no children.

“With fewer children and fewer siblings, there’s just quite naturally fewer cousins in the mix,” said Margo Hilbrecht, executive director of the Vanier Institute of the Family, a national, independent research institute dedicated to understanding families and family life in Canada.

Why cousins matter

Cousins take up an interesting space in many family dynamics — not quite siblings, not quite friends. Some people may grow up alongside their cousins and have a deep bond and others may rarely see them or speak to them at all. Yet experts agree the role can be an important one.

“It’s one of the first places that we might encounter people of our own generation who hold different values or have a different way of doing things, and you wouldn’t necessarily choose to be friends with all of them,” Hilbrecht said.

‘Chosen family’ means everything to adopted sisterhood from China

‘We’ve just made so many memories when we were younger, I just can’t see us losing that bond,’ says Olivia McKenzie.

Extended family ties can be especially important for disadvantaged minority families, noted Qian. For example, she said, research shows that Black single mothers often rely on their extended kin for various types of support; gender and sexual minority adults face much higher levels of parental rejection.

“Extended kin, like cousins, could be a valuable source of social support” for people in these circumstances, she said.

Similar-age cousins, especially, can often enrich one’s childhood in addition to having some shared experiences, said Tfaily. She said it’s important to note the cousin decline is happening alongside other family-related changes, such as the decline in the number of aunts and uncles and the decline in the number of siblings.

“This is reshaping the experience of childhood compared to previous generations and affecting family dynamics and ties.”

A faded photograph shows four children playing on a rocky beach
Lancastle, centre right, has happy memories of camping with her cousins. She worries her kids are missing out on the same ‘big family’ experience, but has focused on cultivating friendships. (Submitted by Noelene Lancastle)

It’s something that weighs on Lancastle when she compares how she grew up surrounded by extended family compared with the experience of her own children. Lancastle’s father was one of 10 children; her mother was one of two.

“They’re missing out on that big family experience, but I think I compensate by having good friends with kids the same age,” she said of Nicholas and Charlie.

“But I knowingly did that because I want them to be surrounded by people.”

This building of extended family by choice shouldn’t be diminished, said Qian of UBC, noting that “voluntary kin” is common in many 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and we don’t have to define family based on blood ties.

“If our society and culture celebrate and value developing close friendships and communities and building family we choose to a greater extent, we may not need to worry about a cousin decline so much.”

In total Sunak paid £508,308 in tax last year. Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, earned £208,547, with interest, dividends and rental income topping up his £113,986 government salary. This was taxed at 38 per cent overall.“ – Sunday Times

We’ve given up the fight, say top Tories as by-election defeats loom

“Conservative MPs on Saturday night predicted fresh attacks on Rishi Sunak’s leadership within days, as they accused their own party of surrendering to Labour without a proper fight in two formerly safe Tory seats where byelections will be held this week. MPs from across the party complained that losses in Wellingborough and Kingswood on Thursday had already been “priced in”, as one senior figure said defeatism had set in, with the party having descended into a “death spiral”. Ministers and MPs said they had not faced any of the normal demands to go to the two seats this weekend to drum up last-minute votes as is customary before byelections.” – Observer

Gove: If the young can’t get housing, they will abandon democracy

“Michael Gove used to find the 1980s BBC sitcom Sorry!, which pokes fun at a librarian who is still living at home with his mother in his forties, very funny. But the housing secretary is not laughing any more. He worries that the cult comedy series, which starred Ronnie Corbett, is now in danger of becoming a documentary. There are record numbers of adults who either never left home or who are joining the “boomerang generation”, forced to return to their parents well into their twenties, thirties and beyond. With the number of first-time buyers falling as young people grapple with the cost of living crisis, coupled with sky-high private sector rents and rising house prices, Gove fears they could turn away from democracy and capitalism if the government does not find a way to solve the housing crisis.” – Sunday Times

Lawson: £28bn, a drop in Labour’s imaginary green ocean

“Why is everyone — well, everyone in politics — so exercised about Labour’s discarding of the previously “unshakeable commitment” to spend £28 billion of taxpayers’ money on its “green prosperity plan”? This is almost a margin-of-error figure compared with the cost of its promise to make the UK’s electricity supply emission-free by 2030 — a promise the shadow chancellor, Rachel Reeves, reiterated last week. The present government is notionally committed to the same grid electrification strategy as Labour, but with 2035 as the target date. Since the election is most likely to be in November, this means Labour claims it will do in five years what the Conservatives pretend to believe can be achieved in ten.” – Sunday Times

Rift? For Starmer and Reeves, things can only get better, together

“On Thursday afternoon Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves put on a very carefully managed show of unity. Perched side by side on the edge of a table in Starmer’s office in the House of Commons, the Labour leader and his shadow chancellor jointly faced the media to prove that, quite literally, there wasn’t an inch between them. Starmer had just ditched Labour’s flagship economic policy for green growth that three years ago was championed by Reeves. ‘My motivation is never to feel how I did when I attempted suicide’ – Colburn

“Elliot Colburn resumes his seat and lets out “the longest sigh” of his life. The European Parliament: The Next Target of the Far-Right

What is fevered activity between minor parties in Europe, becomes equally fevered factional activity within the Tory Party.

400 million eligible voters across Europe will send 720 representatives to Brussels this June in the European Parliament elections. With far-right parties on the rise in Europe, advancing up the polls, occupying ministerial roles in coalition governments, and shaping the policies of the mainstream right, including adopting more anti-immigration positions, Eurosceptic populists could be on track for big gains. What will it mean for the EU if the traditional centre-left and centre-right that built it, are swamped by smaller, radical fringe parties, who will have influence over EU decision-making for the next five years?

And what would it mean for Britain? Our first-past-the-post voting (FPTP) system means it is more difficult for small new parties to make an impact, unlike the likes of the Netherlands, which finally succumbed to a long ascent by the far-right Party for Freedom in November. Instead, the battle in Britain is more about controlling the big parties, specifically the Tories, which are facing takeover bids by various hard-right nationalist factions. No doubt Britain’s Eurosceptic hardliners will be emboldened if anti-EU European populists manage to make significant gains in June.

And the polls don’t look pretty, predicting a right-wing surge.

recent poll by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) forecasts the 2024 European Parliament elections will see a major shift to the right in many countries, with the hard-right nationalist right picking up nearly a quarter of seats, and centre-left and green parties losing votes and seats. The forecast shows that these anti-European populists are likely to top the polls in nine member states (Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Slovakia) and come second or third in a further nine countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and Sweden).

Hard-right coalescing

Hungary’s Viktor Orban has confirmed that his Fidesz party MEPs “are ready and will join” the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, led by his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni. After UK Conservatives left, the group has been dominated by Polish nationalists. If the two factions joined forces it could become the “strongest faction in the European Parliament,” as Gergely Gulyás Hungary’s minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, recently said.

On February 7, France’s far-right politician Marion Marechal, granddaughter of National Front (renamed National Rally in 2018) founder Jean-Marie Le Pen and niece of its current leader Marine Le Pen, announced that Nicolas Bay, the party’s sole member of the European Parliament, will sit with the Eurosceptic ECR group. Polls show that the group is threatening to overtake French President Emmanuel Macron’s Renew Europe in size, with Meloni’s MEPs expected to swell in number.

What impact a far-right infiltration on the European Parliament would have on EU decision-making is the subject of concerned speculation. The ECFR.EU surmises that while the parliament is not the most significant EU institution when it comes to foreign policy, the way in which the political groups align after the elections, and the impact that these elections have on national debates in member states, will have significant implications for the European Commission’s and Council’s ability to make foreign policy choices.
The most notable will be implementing the next phase of the European Green Deal.

“We’re going to see a really significant shift to the right,” said Simon Hix, a professor of comparative politics at the European University Institute.

Hix predicts that the far-right Identity & Democracy (ID) grouping in the European Parliament, home to the German extreme-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the French far-right National Rally (RN) party, will gain 40 seats in June, toppling the Liberals from their third-place spot. He also forecasts the 67-members of the ECR group, will gain 18 seats, surpassing the Greens and the Liberals to be the fourth largest group in Parliament.

The far-right are no doubt rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect of having influence over policies most important to them, most notably immigration and climate laws.

Geert Wilders’ anti-immigrant Freedom Party’s unexpected win in the Netherlands galvanised the leaders of far-right parties from across Europe. Meeting in Italy in December, they vowed to reshape the EU after the European Parliament elections. They pledged to toughen the bloc’s approach to immigration and soften its climate policies, as a means of protecting industry and jobs. (Tactics which are of course being implemented in Britain by our own government.)

“Our objective is for (us) to become at least the third-largest (group in the EU parliament), after the centre-right and the socialists, and to be decisive,” said Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who hosted the meeting.

An ‘ungovernable’ EU

Warnings have been made that if these far-right parties perform as well as in the Dutch vote last year, as the opinion polls predict, and as the parties threaten, the European Union could become ungovernable.
Stéphane Séjourné, leader of the centrist Renew Europe group, said: “With the rise of populists almost everywhere in Europe of the extreme right, we risk having an ungovernable Europe.”

Renew, the centre-right European People’s Party and the centre-left Socialists and Democrats group formed a coalition five years ago. The three groups have 420 seats in parliament. They agreed broad policy outlines and divide up top EU jobs. However, recent far-right wins have sent a warning to mainstream parties, including President Macron’s party in France, which makes up a quarter of Renew. Macron trails far-right leader Marine Le Pen by 8 – 10 percentage points. The risk is that it could be “very difficult to form a majority,” Séjourné warned.

The European Parliament has always prevented far-right members from holding influential positions on Parliament. However, as Politico reports, key players are explicitly plotting to divide the main groups by dragging the centre-right aways from the Liberals and Socialists.  Marco Zanni, leader of the Identity and Democracy (ID), a Eurosceptic far-right group of the European Parliament, and a politician from Italy’s right-wing populist party, League, said it’s a tactic that has already worked in recent months.

“What has been done on immigration, what has been done on some files on the Green Deal is the result of this pressure that we put on the centre-right to shift the position and to make this contract with the left less concrete and less institutional,” he said.

Britain’s exit from the EU on January 31, 2020, meant that the 73 UK MEPs had to vacate their seats. Without any representation in EU decision-making, and with a FPTP voting system that favours the main parties, the hard-right’s battle in Britain is predominantly aimed at controlling the ruling party. What is fevered activity between minor parties in Europe, becomes equally fevered factional activity within the Tory Party.

Discontent with the current leadership and fearful of an impending trouncing in the forthcoming election, a slew of Conservative factions has appeared, looking to rally right-wing MPs ahead of this year’s vote. The policies put forward by these rebel factions share similarities with those sought by the far-right in Europe.

More than a quarter of Tory MPs are aligned to one or more internal movements. These key groups include long-standing factions like the Eurosceptic European Research Group (ERG), which became a household name during the Brexit years with its own demands for exiting the EU.

But new Tory rebel groups have popped up. The New Conservatives comprise of 25 Tory backbenchers, predominantly from so-called “Red Wall” seats that the party won from Labour in recent elections. The group caused controversy with its call to end the temporary visa scheme for care workers and cap the number of refugees who can settle in Britain.

The New Conservatives’ precursor is the Northern Research Group, led by former party chairman Jake Berry. The group was also born from 2019 election victories in the Red Wall, promising to focus on the interests of the towns and cities that make up the so-called ‘Northern Powerhouse.’

The new kid on the block is the Popular Conservative (PopCons), launched by Liz Truss. A bit like the former PM herself, the group’s name is comical given the unpopularity of UK Conservatives. Truss addressed the audience at the group’s launch event in London this week, where she took aim at the ‘spread of wokery’, with the hope of appealing to ‘secret Conservatives.’ She spoke alongside Jacob Rees-Mogg and Lee Anderson, who recently quit as deputy Tory deputy chairman over the Rwanda Bill.

The group aims to put pressure on Rishi Sunak to cut taxes, and, like the far-right in Europe which blames the EU’s alleged policy weaknesses on the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), leave the ECHR and to adopt hardline policies on immigration.

“Popular conservatism is about restoring this balance and returning power to Parliament while taking it away from quangos and a judiciary that has become more political,” Rees-Mogg told the launch event.

If the Conservatives lose the general election, which the polls widely suggest, and especially if the result is catastrophic, which the polls also suggest, a post-Sunak bitterly fought battle between the party’s right and centre is likely to emerge. As the final choice would be made by members, who tend to be further to the right than the parliamentary party, it is possible they would choose, as they did with Liz Truss, a hard-right leader.

Suella Braverman and Kemi Badenoch are seen as the frontrunners to succeed Rishi Sunak from the party’s populist right. Penny Mordaunt is regarded as a contender from the centrist wing. Then there’s the possibility of Nigel Farage taking the Tory helm, the man, who, alongside two Tory MPs, former chancellors Kwasi Kwarteng and Nadhim Zahawi, met with French far-right politician Eric Zemmour this week. The leader of the far-right Reconquête Party, is behind a Brexit-style ‘Frexit.’ In a post on X following his meeting with Farage, Zemmour wrote: “We talked about Brexit and its consequences, the tyranny of Brussels against our farmers and the other challenges to our European civilization.”

If downbeat Conservative Party members look to the hard-right as an alternative to the centre-right, the party could tilt even further to the populist right, and the type of populism embraced by European hard-right leaders such as Giorgia Meloni and Viktor Orbán.

In essence, what could happen in the European Parliamentary elections in June, if the far-right manage to snatch votes and seats, as the pollsters predict, could be mirrored in Britain to some extent, where right-wing Tories, in the face of defeat, will be looking to regroup for revenge.

Hold onto your seats, we’re in for a wild ride.

Right-Wing Media Watch – Tory press lectures bishops on morality, yes really!

Tensions between bishops in the House of Lords and the Tories have flared in recent years, predominantly around the issue of migration. Following their clash over the Illegal Migration Bill, a former senior advisor to the bishops described their relationship with government ministers as “really toxic” and “unfixable.”

Naturally, the Rwanda bill-backing Tory media is not on the side of the bishops.

‘Bishops must realise that blocking the smuggling gangs is a genuine act of compassion,’ was the bizarre headline in the Sun on Sunday.

The article objects to the bishops’ condemnation of the government’s controversial Rwanda legislation claiming, ‘Bishops must examine their own consciences over migration.’

Murdoch’s Sun lecturing bishops on morality? The newspaper, which is persistently swamped by colossal controversies, including being blacklisted in Liverpool after its coverage of the Hillsborough disaster. The tabloid in which hundreds of celebrities have brought cases of phone hacking forward, and which has paid out millions to settle costs? The newspaper which faced serious questions over its reporting and ethical standards over the Huw Edwards scandal?

But according to the Sun, it’s the bishops who are the bad guys, those who have ‘consistently voted against almost everything the government has pushed through in recent years.’

The article is in reference to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s recent warning in a debate on the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration Bill) in the House of Lords.

The Bill, “obscure[s] the truth that all people, asylum-seekers included, are of great value. We can, as a nation, do better,” said Archbishop Welby.

But for the Sun, the comments are evidence that Justin Welby and ‘Tory-bashing bishops in the Lords trying to ‘sabotage the best chance of stopping the small boats.’ And that the Home Secretary James Cleverley is ‘spot on’ when he points out there is “nothing honourable or righteous” in “allowing murderous people smuggler to ply their trade.”

Though it’s not just Cleverley and the Sun gunning for the Church. Former home secretaries Suella Braverman and Priti Patel have both accused British churches of supporting ‘bogus’ asylum claims.

Speaking in the Sunday Telegraph, following the well-documented case of suspected Clapham attacker Abdul Ezedi, who reportedly had two claims for British asylum turned down before he claimed his adopted Christianity left him vulnerable to persecution, Braverman said that during her time in Cabinet she had “became aware of churches around the country facilitating industrial-scale bogus asylum claims.”

Braverman, who was sacked in November after she was accused of stoking community tensions in her allegations about Metropolitan Polic, continued: “Attend mass once a week for a few months, befriend the vicar, get your baptism date in the diary and, bingo, you’ll be signed off by a member of clergy that you’re now a God-fearing Christian who will face certain persecution if removed to your Islamic country of origin. It has to stop.”

Nigel Farage joined the clergy-criticising rumpus, condemning the Church of England after a paper entitled “Supporting Asylum Seekers – Guidance for Church of England Clergy”, showed vicars have received advice on how to mount personal campaigns in the event of asylum claims being refused. The anti-immigration Express naturally jumped on the story, publishing an ‘exclusive’ on Farage leading ‘new criticism of the Church of England after an official document revealed details of its role aiding asylum applications.’

At least the newspaper admits it was ‘new’ criticism of the Church, as clergyman have been in the firing line of the Right for some time now, claiming, incredulously, that the Church has gone woke!

Perhaps their beef really lies in the fact that just 6 percent of Anglican clergy voted Conservative in 2019, none in the Church of Scotland, and none in the Church in Wales. It will be interesting to see how many church leaders vote Tory in 2024.

No doubt, the right-wing media will be sent into a clergy-bashing tailspin.

Smear of the Week – Sunak stoops to new low, suggesting Starmer is a ‘terrorist sympathiser’

An interview intended to boost his public image through some ‘blokey bants’ with Piers Morgan, did not go well for the Prime Minister. It backfired in fact, spectacularly. Not only did the PM cause outrage by making a ‘depraved’ £1,000 bet with the TalkTV host over the Rwanda plan, but he suggested the Labour leader is a ‘terrorist sympathiser.’

It’s one thing for the Tory Party to spread vicious smears about Starmer’s legal career on social media, but the Prime Minister making such remarks on national television is something else.

Sunak spoke of how when Starmer was a lawyer, he represented the Islamist group, Hizb ut-Tahir, now proscribed as a terrorist organisation in the UK.

“He supported them in resisting proscription elsewhere. That’s who he was on the side of. We’re busy trying to ban these people and he was busy trying to represent them,” he said.

In typical incendiary fashion and probably eyeing an opportunity to ensure the interview let off some fireworks, Morgan asked: “Do you think he’s a terrorist sympathiser?”

Sunak fell hook line and sinker to the tactic, replying: “The facts speak for themselves. There he was, he was their lawyer when they were trying to resist this, we’ve just proscribed them because we think that’s what they are. These things speak to people’s values.”

Somebody ought to take Sunak gently aside, and Piers Morgan too while they are about it, and explain that under our legal system, defending an accused person does not imply any view on their guilt or innocence. That is for the jury to decide. Everybody is entitled to be defended, although the way the Tories are heading, we might not be able to count on that forever.

Quite rightly, a spokesperson for Starmer described the remarks as “desperate nonsense.”

Sunak would have been better pulling Piers Morgan up about the deliberately provocative question. Or at least, not agreeing to it so directly.

This particularly vicious smear against Stamer, comes as no surprise though, as the Tories have been attacking his legal career even before he entered parliament. They have persistently thrown up personal attack ads, newspaper stories and negative briefings, all attempting to demean his record as director of
public prosecution and his time as a human rights barrister.

Such attacks have made no impression whatsoever, so why they think they will now, just goes to show exactly how desperate and bereft of ideas they, and their leader, have become.

How Super Eagles Unite Nigerians

By Ehi Braimah

As we await the outcome of the 2023 African Cup of Nations final game between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in Abidjan, Nigerians are expectant and the excitement across the country’s palpable. Having come this far in the tournament that kicked off with 24 participating countries in the group stages, I do not see what will stop the Super Eagles from lifting the trophy tonight, Sunday February 11, 2024.

All the players are in high spirits, and they are poised to win AFCON 2023 for Nigerians – both at home and in the diaspora – who are united behind them. What do eagles do? They fly very high, and they also show strength with concentration. Eagles also love the storm. We expect the Super Eagles to fly very high over the Elephants during the final showdown at the Alassane Quattara Olympic Stadium stadium in Abidjan.

Right from the first blast of the referee’s whistle, our players should spring into action. There’s no time to waste. Like true eagles with excellent vision, courage and the stamina to fly at high altitudes, the Super Eagles must be relentless, push forward and dominate the game. They must be hungry for early goals. The whole world would be watching. This is our moment; the Super Eagles must grab it and steal the thunder from the Ivorians.

Also Read – AFCON 2023: Drama At The Finish Line! –Odegbami

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced that Dahane Beida, aged 32, from Mauritania will be the centre referee for the crucial match. Assisting Beida will be Emiliano Dos Santos from Angola and Diana Chicotesha from Zambia. Morocco’s Bouchra Karboubi will serve as the fourth official. The die is cast.

Members of the supporters’ club and football fans in Cote d’Ivoire who have been singing and dancing for the players and Nigeria to win in our national colours are true heroes. You can be sure Nigerians all over the world will be rooting for the Super Eagles as they take on the Ivorian national team.

Every available space – whether in sitting rooms, hotel lobbies, viewing centres or pepper soup/beer parlours – will be will be taken up by football fans who will stay glued to their television sets to watch what promises to be an exciting encounter.

What football is teaching us is that Nigerians love their country. Winning with the Super Eagles and the passion that Nigerians have displayed in support of the national team is a lesson in patriotism.

Suddenly, no one remembers where we come from or how we worship. Tribe and tongue did not play any role in team selection because they are not important. This is not downplaying the value of diversity, equity and inclusion. However, what is important as we have discovered with the current squad, is that it is better to always put our best eleven players forward.

That is what the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the coaching crew led by Jose Peseiro, the 63-year-old Portuguese, have done. Winning was what mattered. Kudos to them.

Football is a huge cultural phenomenon and intoxicating opium in many countries. When the national team is doing well, people tend to forget their differences and unite behind the team. Everyone shares in the success story. In the age of social media, national team success gives the people bragging rights over other countries.

Winning the African Cup of Nations at this time is a big deal for Nigerians. This tournament which began on January 13 has been a useful distraction. If we lift the trophy tonight, it will be the fourth time. Nigeria has taken part in the tournament 20 times, but we have won the cup only three times.

The first time was in 1980 in Lagos; the second time was in 1994 in Tunis, Tunisia while the third time was in 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The most decorated country is Egypt which has claimed seven AFCON titles – including a hat trick between 2006 and 2010.

When tournament favourites such as the defending champions, Senegal, Egypt and Morocco crashed out, it brightened the chances of the Super Eagles. But no one reckoned with the fact that the Ivorians would bounce back forcefully after their poor group stage performances.

They are now our opponents in the much anticipated final. Home support has been touted as an advantage for the Elephants, but that will not be a problem for the Super Eagles who understand how to rise up to big occasions.

Cote d’Ivoire had home support when they lost 1 – 0 to Nigeria and 4 – 0 to Equatorial Guinea in the group phase. Top players do not allow home support affect their performances.

super-eagles-nigeria-afcon-2023-africa-cup-of-nations

The Super Eagles’ preparation was like most of the other teams in the tournament because of the Europe-based players. They didn’t have much time together before AFCON 2023 and had to deal with injuries.

Taiwo Awoniyi was ruled out before the squad was announced while Wilfred Ndidi, Victor Boniface, and Sadiq Umar needed to be replaced with Alhassan Yusuf, Terem Moffi and Paul Onuachu respectively.

In this tournament, the Super Eagles started slowly and it was not surprising. They always appeared tentative right from the qualifying rounds.

I watched the 2026 World Cup Qualifier that the Super Eagles played against Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on November 16, last year. The match ended in 1 – 1 draw after Lesotho had gone ahead earlier. The home fans were disappointed.

Although the Super Eagles played a 1 – 1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in their opening game in AFCON 2023 (a predictable pattern), they have won every match since then, with their progress built on a solid defence. Coach Peseiro went into a three-centre-backs system after the first draw and the team did not concede any goal in four matches.

The Super Eagles beat Cote d’Ivoire 1 – 0, Guinea Bissau 1 – 0, Cameroon 2 – 0 in the round of 16, and Angola 1 – 0 in the quarter-final until the semi-final where they played 1 – 1 with South Africa before winning 4 – 2 on penalties.

The national team can overcome the Ivorians if they stay with their match plan and the tactics that have worked for them in the tournament so far. How they organise themselves on the field during the match will make all the difference. In addition, the defence must retain its vibrancy and quick-footedness where split-second decisions are pivotal to routing the Elephants.

The Super Eagles must also not be goal shy; they should take advantage of every goal scoring opportunity, especially in the first half. It will also be a battle of wits, but our players in all departments should not back down from physical battles.

Our strikers have not scored too many goals, but they have worked hard for the team. Victor Osimhen has scored only once in six matches, but he has one assist and has won two important penalties. On his part, Ademola Lookman has scored three goals and Moses Simon has an assist and has earned man-of-the-match performances.

Stanley Nwabali, our goalie who plays for Chippa United in South Africa, has distinguished himself as one of the biggest revelations and safest pair of hands of the tournament. He has been part of the remarkable defence, also comprising William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi and Ola Aina,

As we count down to the big match which Segun Odegbami, former national team player and member of the 1980 Green Eagles that won AFCON, had predicted, Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire have met 28 times with nine wins each and 10 draws.

What does that tell you?

We are in for a thrilling encounter tonight in Abidjan but the Super Eagles of Nigeria will lift the trophy. That is my prediction. Good luck to our players.

Super Bowl 2024 Gameday Guide: Steve Spagnuolo vs Kyle Shanahan, Patrick Mahomes’ pursuit of greatness, Taylor Swift, Usher, Steven Frayne and predictions

It is Super Bowl 58 on Sunday. In Las Vegas. With the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes will be there. So will Brock Purdy. Taylor Swift should be there. Usher will definitely be there. Probably worth a watch. If you’re into that kind of thing…

Editor’s note…

If Brock Purdy is to achieve the unthinkable as a Mr Irrelevant-turned-Super Bowl champion, Steve Spagnuolo is going to make him work harder, play smarter, read the field clearer and be better than ever before in his young, staggering, developing NFL career.

Chiefs players of late have sported ‘In Spags We Trust’ t-shirts in reference to their beloved defensive coordinator, who has been as much a face of Kansas City’s path back to the Super Bowl as Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid or any member of the defending champions. Without Spagnuolo and his defense, their Super Bowl defence would be long over.

Travis Kelce and George Kittle, the best tight ends in the league, go head to in Super Bowl LVIII

Come Sunday night, it might be as much a case of Kyle Shanahan vs Steve Spagnuolo as it is Shanahan vs Reid or Mahomes vs Brock Purdy. It was Spagnuolo who called the shots to nullify Tyreek Hill and Mike McDaniel, it was Spagnuolo who called the shots to nullify Josh Allen, it was Spagnuolo who called the shots to shut down Lamar Jackson. What can he do against Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle?

“We love playing for Coach Spags, we absolutely love him, couldn’t be more proud to play for him,” Chiefs edge rusher George Karlaftis told Sky Sports NFL.

For so long the norm has been Mahomes mastery inciting offensive supremacy as the Chiefs steamroll their way to postseason contention. The norm changed in 2023, Spagnuolo’s unit shouldering responsibility in the face of a hobbling attack as the shape-shifting concoction of confusion baiting quarterbacks into mistakes and frustrating the most talented of weapons.

Sky Sports have spent the week with magician Steven Frayne, formerly known as Dynamo, as he boggles the minds of players and celebrities amid the enchantment of Las Vegas and its adoration for illusion. Spagnuolo promises his own clinic in sleight-of-hand perplexion.

Watch the best plays from San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Brock Purdy from the 2023 season

His Chiefs ranked second in the league in total yards allowed and points allowed, while ranking fourth against the pass as the team’s driving force. He would meddle with the appearance of his defensive front through personnel changes to offer varying weight and skillset challenges for offensive lineman to deal with, he would rotate his coverages pre and post-snap with yo-yoing safeties to muddy the quarterback’s field diagnosis as effectively as any defensive director in the league, he would disguise blitzes to create pressure from his defensive backs, he would license L’Jarius Sneed with press freedom to wrestle and jam the league’s best receivers at the line of scrimmage.

Asked what makes Spagnuolo so important, Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones joked: “He’s Italian. He’s amazing. His resume speaks for itself, I think he’s the only (defensive coordinator) who was able to go to the championship with two different teams. He’s been very successful in the scheme of defense that he’s ran over his span in the NFL. It’s Spags, man. What can you say?”

Spagnuolo’s Chiefs have blitzed quarterbacks at the fourth-highest rate in the league this season, but will come up against a player in Purdy who has flourished against five or more pass rushers such has been his level of anticipation and the speed at which he gets the ball out. It beckons as a game of moving parts between Spagnuolo’s fidgeting defense and a 49ers offense that dialled up a shift or motion at the second-highest rate in the league this season. Makes for quite the chess match.

As the countdown continues to Sunday’s showdown, we take a look back at the Kansas City Chiefs’ journey to Super Bowl LVIII

Victory would mark the latest instalment of a fascinating career for Spagnuolo, who hopped between college coaching roles and spells in Europe with the Barcelona Dragons and Frankfurt Galaxy in the 90s before heading to the NFL. He has since become the only coordinator in history to win a Super Bowl with two separate franchises, having lifted the Lombardi during his time with the New York Giants.

Somehow he has floated undetected and overlooked during annual coaching cycles since arriving in Arrowhead in 2019; the Chiefs won’t mind. Reid would have no other man beside him on Sunday.

Spagnuolo is a perfect fit for Vegas trickery, some of which the 49ers might have already experienced after their hotel fire alarm mysteriously went off at 6am on Thursday morning. Welcome to Super Bowl week.

“You don’t want to wake the sleeping bear. But Christian (McCaffrey) was not happy too,” said 49ers tight end George Kittle.

The written-off Chiefs and the nearly-team 49ers, primed to meet again in a rematch of Super Bowl LIV. The season comes down to this.

Who to watch…

49ers vs Chiefs

49ers Chiefs
2023 record 12-5 – NFC West champions 11-6 – AFC West champions
Super Bowl wins 5 3
Last Super Bowl appearance 2019 season 2022 season
Starting quarterback Brock Purdy Patrick Mahomes
Head coach Kyle Shanahan Andy Reid

Isiah Pacheco, RB, Chiefs: His running style is as animated, as pound-the-ground, as watchable as any back in the NFL, but behind the jokes of Isiah Pacheco’s on-field aesthetics is solid production as one of the most instrumental figures to the Chiefs playoff run in 2023. He has proven a worthy executioner of Reid’s gap scheme runs, punching lanes with conviction and carrying bodies in tow to the tune of 254 yards and three touchdowns in the postseason. The 49ers were torched on the ground during their playoff wins over the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions. Will Pacheco and the Chiefs enjoy similar success on the ground?

Trent McDuffie, CB, Chiefs: Something tells you Spagnuolo has had bundles of fun working with Trent McDuffie since the 2022 first-round pick’s arrival. He has become a perfect cog within his defensive coordinator’s rolling coverage system, emerging as one of the league’s most impactful nickel corners against the run game and thereby positioning himself as one of the keys to containing a McCaffrey-led ground assault. The first-team All-Pro corner recorded five forced fumbles this season as one of the chief contributors to Kansas City’s hard-nosed blitz-heavy defense, his late bursts from the second level fuelling Spagnuolo’s art of disguise.

See how the San Francisco 49ers made it to Super Bowl LVIII

Brandon Aiyuk, WR, 49ers: The 49ers might not be here were it not for Brandon Aiyuk’s stunning catch off the helmet of Detroit Lions cornerback Kindle Vildor, setting his side up at the five-yard line before his touchdown grab three plays later to reduce the deficit to 24-17 in the NFC Championship Game. It was a stroke of fortune and a defining moment in the Niners’ season, across which Aiyuk has starred as perhaps the league’s most unsung lead receiver. The 2020 first-round pick enjoyed a career year with 1,342 receiving yards at 17.9 yards per catch and seven touchdowns, and will now be tasked as the man to test the downfield coverage skills of the Chiefs’ acclaimed defensive backs.

Dre Greenlaw, LB, 49ers: You cannot talk about the influence of Fred Warner without too shining a light on the value of Dre Greenlaw in Steve Wilks’ 49ers defense. His speed, range and ability to read concepts has been among the best in his position this season, pitting him alongside Warner as two of the defining blockades to Mahomes’ efforts to find Travis Kelce. He will be central to bottling a Chiefs offense that will dare him to maraud downhill in support of stuffing Isiah Pacheco, while also dragging him east-to-west in accordance to Mahomes’ play-extension and challenging him to cover the league’s best pass-catching tight end.

Jeff Reinebold believes San Francisco 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan will be under huge pressure to avoid a third Super Bowl defeat

Last five meetings between teams

  • Chiefs 44-23 49ers (23/10/2022)
  • 49ers 20-31 Chiefs (02/02/2020)
  • 49ers 27-38 Chiefs (23/09/2018)
  • Chiefs 17-22 49ers (05/10/2014)
  • 49ers 10-31 Chiefs (26/09/2010)

Rashee Rice, WR, Chiefs: Mahomes lied in wait for somebody to arise from his under-staffed, error-ridden core of young wide receivers this season; Rashee Rice answered the call. The second-round rookie has become his quarterback’s favourite and most-trusted target not named Travis Kelce, finishing the regular season with 938 receiving yards and seven touchdowns before spring-boarding the Chiefs’ playoff campaign with 130 yards and a score in their Wild Card win over the Miami Dolphins. Rice finished the season ranked third in yards-after-catch (653) behind only Amon-Ra St. Brown and CeeDee Lamb, becoming Mahomes’ go-to zone-coverage-beater.

Christian McCaffrey, RB, 49ers: Don’t be shocked to see an outright rushing raid from the 49ers in a bid to unlock the Chiefs defense in the early exchanges of Sunday’s Super Bowl. The Bills threatened ominous signs with their running game only to come unstuck against the champions in the Divisional Round, before the Ravens bizarrely neglected their own ground threat amid a Spagnuolo masterclass at the AFC Championship Game. In Christian McCaffrey the 49ers boast the NFL’s most influential two-way running back, whose slide-and-cut explosion in Shanahan’s zone attack presents the greatest of lateral tests for Kansas City up front. The league leader in scrimmage yards has all the makings of a Super Bowl MVP as a dream cushion to Purdy.

From Mr Irrelevant to the Super Bowl: Purdy seeks fairy-tale moment

The NFL did not see Brock Purdy coming. Not even the San Francisco 49ers saw him coming.

He should not be here, not really. The last pick of the NFL Draft? Pulling the strings to the NFL’s best offense? Fulfilling the masterplan of a generational offensive architect? Going head to head with the greatest quarterback of his generation? In the Super Bowl? He couldn’t. He wouldn’t. He is. He might.

The 49ers do not make it this far without Kyle Shanahan’s quarterback-friendly system or their envied entourage of superstar weapons, but nor do they make it this far without Purdy. He is not a superstar, but his ability to accentuate his strengths has turned him into the player Shanahan needed.

Purdy will look to crown one of the NFL’s great underdog stories as ‘Mr Irrelevant’ leads the 49ers out at Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas on Sunday…

Mahomes’ quest to beat Brady’s seven | ‘He’s already in GOAT-ville’

When Tom Brady finally bowed out of the NFL last February at the age of 45, he did so as the undisputed GOAT. But, just one year on, his legacy of a record seven Super Bowl titles is already under threat: and he goes by the name of Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes, aged 28, already has two Super Bowl rings to his name and, on Sunday, has the chance to make that three with victory over the very same San Francisco 49ers against whom he secured his first four years ago.

Russia has recruited as many as 15,000 Nepalis to fight its war. Many returned traumatized. Some never came back – Egypt Independent

Kathmandu, Nepal CNN  —

Ramchandra Khadka stood in front of a temple in the middle of Kathmandu, Nepal, praying for his fellow countrymen who are fighting for Russia in Moscow’s war against Ukraine.

As the ceremonial bells rang and the sweet smell of incense filled the air, he lit candles and offered flowers to a deity. All he wants is for his Nepali friends to survive the brutal war.

The 37-year-old recently returned to Nepal after suffering injuries on the front lines in Ukraine. He told CNN he witnessed horrific scenes and regrets his decision to join the Kremlin’s army as a foreign mercenary.

Russia’s war in Ukraine is not the first battle Khadka has fought. He was among Nepal’s Maoist rebels, who fought a bloody war with the country’s forces for 10 years from the mid-1990s. He then went to Afghanistan after being hired by a private military contractor to assist NATO forces in the country. He thought he had experienced it all in his lifetime – bloodshed, death and pain. But, some 17 years after the Maoist war ended, with no hope of a job in Nepal, he decided to fly to Russia to join the country’s military for money.

“I didn’t join the Russian military for pleasure. I didn’t have any job opportunities in Nepal. But in hindsight, it wasn’t the right decision. We didn’t realize we would be sent to the frontlines that quickly and how horrible the situation would be,” Khadka said.

He arrived in Moscow in September last year. After only two weeks of training, he said, he was sent to the front lines in Bakhmut – a town in eastern Ukraine that saw some of the heaviest fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces – with a gun and a basic kit.

“There isn’t an inch of land in Bakhmut that’s not affected by bombs. All the trees, shrubs, and greenery… they are all gone. Most of the houses have been destroyed. The situation there is so gruesome that it makes you want to cry,” he recalled.

Khadka was deployed to Bakhmut twice and spent a total of one month there. During his second deployment, he was struck by a bullet in his hip. After he was rescued and taken a few hundred meters back from the front line, he was hit by shrapnel from a cluster bomb.

“I still get a headache when I think about the terrible scenes I saw in the war zone,” he said.

He is one of as many as 15,000 Nepali men to have joined the Russian military, multiple sources have told CNN, after the Russian government last year announced a lucrative package for foreign fighters to join the country’s military.

The package included at least $2,000 salary a month and a fast-tracked process to obtain a Russian passport. Nepal’s passport is ranked one of the worst in the world for global mobility, below North Korea, according to an index created by global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners, and the Himalayan nation is among the world’s poorest, with a per capita GDP of $1,336 for 2022, according to World Bank data.

The Nepali government says about 200 of its citizens are fighting for the Russian army and that at least 13 Nepalis have been killed in the war zone. But lawmakers and rights’ campaigners in Nepal say those official estimates vastly underestimate the real numbers.

A prominent opposition Nepali lawmaker and former foreign minister, Bimala Rai Paudyal, told the upper house of the county’s parliament on Thursday that between 14,000 and 15,000 Nepalis are fighting on the front lines, citing testimony from men returning from the war zone, and called on the Russian authorities to provide the figures.

“The Russian government must have the data of how many foreign fighters have joined the Russian army and how many Nepalis are fighting for Russia,” she said.

Four Nepali fighters are currently being held as prisoners of war (POWs) by Ukraine, according to Nepal’s foreign ministry.

The Russian foreign ministry has not responded to CNN’s questions about the number of Nepalis recruited by the Russian army and how many of them have died so far.

Kritu Bhandari, a Kathmandu-based politician and social campaigner, has become the leader of a group of family members of Nepali men fighting in Russia. She says around 2,000 families have approached her in recent weeks asking for help either to get in touch with their missing loved ones or to bring those who are still in contact home to the small South Asian nation.

Hundreds of families say their relatives in Russia haven’t been in contact for many weeks or months, according to Bhandari.

Januka Sunar’s husband went to Russia three months ago to join the military. He hasn’t been in touch with his family in Nepal for two-and-a-half months.

The last time Sunar spoke to her husband, she told CNN, he said that the Russian military was moving him to a different location and that they would not allow him to take his mobile phone with him. He didn’t tell her where he was being relocated to.

“I’m very worried. I don’t know what happened to him. He may be injured… and I wonder if they will return his phone eventually. I’m scared. I try not to think of the worst,” she said.

Sunar said her husband, the sole breadwinner in the house, who used to work making silver jewelry and utensils, had joined the Russian army solely for money – to build a better life for the family. She has two children who live with her in a town on the outskirts of Kathmandu.

CNN met her along with other family members of those in Russia, who had gathered at the headquarters of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center) in the Nepali capital to try to put pressure on the country’s top politicians to repatriate their loved ones.

“If the worst has happened to him, it’ll be worse than going to hell for us. We don’t have a future for the rest of our lives,” she said.

Sunar burst into tears as she shared how she was unable to explain to her children where their father is.

“They say: ‘Where is our dad, mummy? All of our friend’s dads who went abroad for work have returned… when is our dad coming back? We want to talk to our dad just for once.’”

Sunar is desperate for help from the authorities. “We just want information – from our government or the Russian government. Just tell us about his condition. Please see if you can rescue him. If they want to keep him there… .at least we want to know how he is… and speak to him,” she said.

Buddhi Maya Tamang, who was also at the gathering, received a call at the end of January from a Russian number after midnight. She thought her husband, Shukra Tamang – a retired Nepali army soldier fighting for Russia – was the person calling.

It was someone else. A Nepali commander who was leading a unit on the front lines told her that her husband had been killed during the fighting.

“I was then speechless and senseless… I was hoping it was a prank call,” she said.

She hasn’t received confirmation of his death from either the Nepali or the Russian government.

“I just need an official proof of his condition – regardless of whether it’s good news or bad news.”

After analyzing the TikTok profiles of 10 Nepali men who travelled to Russia to join the army, CNN used satellite imagery to geolocate them to the Avangard training center, a military academy outside of Moscow.

The academy was designed as a youth military academy and describes itself as a “patriotic education” center. It has been re-outfitted into a training academy for foreign mercenaries entering the ranks of the Russian army. This was where Khadka received his brief training.

“Over here they teach you how to assemble and fire guns,” explained Shishir Bishwokarma, a Nepali soldier who has documented his journey to Russia and life at the training camp on YouTube.

The geolocated social media video shows an indoor wrestling gym converted into a training area for familiarization with small arms such as AK-47s, while the gym’s old Moscow Oblast flag appears to have been switched out for the colors of the Russian defense ministry.

A Nepali soldier in Russia, who did not want to be named for security reasons, told CNN he had trained on rocket launchers, bombs, machine guns, drones, and tanks while staying at Avangard.

The soldier described his fellow academy cadets as coming from across the global south. He cited Afghan, Indian, Congolese and Egyptian classmates, among others. Class photos from Avangard posted on social media show dozens of what appear to be South Asian soldiers with native Russian instructors.

Following their basic training at Avangard, CNN traced at least two soldiers to a nearby secondary base known as the Alabino Polygon.

At this mechanized infantry training compound, which was geolocated with the help of the Bellingcat Discord community, a handful of South Asian soldiers in full combat gear appear to be familiarizing themselves with operating alongside armored vehicles and heavy weaponry, as well as packing gear bags and organizing into larger units among Russian soldiers.

One of Bishwokarma’s videos shows drones flying over the center of the Avangard academy complex, while he narrates “now guys, we have come to a drone class.”

“We don’t understand Russian, but they have turned on Russian movies in our waiting room so that we can watch,” he explains.

Multiple Nepalis enlisting in the Russian army have stated that they don’t speak Russian but explain that instructors at Avangard seek to accommodate this by training the men in English.

That language barrier has played a large part in the deaths of many Nepalis on the front lines, said Khadka, the former fighter.

“Sometimes you can’t even understand where you’re supposed to be going or how to get there,” he said.

Khadka said he used to communicate with Russian officers by using a voice-translating app – and many times, just hand signals.

Several returned Nepali fighters who spoke with CNN blamed Russia for using them as cannon fodder in the war.

“It’s the Nepalis and other foreign fighters that are actually fighting in the front of war zones. The Russians position themselves a few hundred meters back as support,” said Suman Tamang, who returned from Russia last week.

“Some of my friends were mistreated by the Russian commander when they tried to voice their concerns,” Tamang recalled.

The 39-year-old also said that the Ukrainians were attacking their position with drones, something his unit didn’t have. He blamed the lack of modern fighting machinery for their losses.

CNN has reached out to the Russian defense and foreign ministries about Tamang’s claims.

Some fighters claim that while they signed up for the money, they do not support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It’s not right to invade another country. Everyone has the right to live. All countries should respect the sovereignty of another country. It’s not right for people of any country to be killed in such a hideous way. It’s not right for tens of thousands of people to die for the interest of a few,” Khadka said.

Each year, around 400,000 people are estimated to enter the Nepali job market with limited skills and opportunities. A staggering 19.2 percent youth unemployment rate among individuals aged 15 to 29 underscores the hurdle the younger demographic faces in the pursuit of employment.

Nepali men who want to join the Russian army first travel to Russia on a tourist visa. Most of the people CNN spoke with said they went via the United Arab Emirates or India. After landing in Moscow, they go to a recruitment center, where a physical checkup is done, they said.

“The recruiters get very happy when Nepalis show up,” a former fighter said.

A one-year contract is signed and the men get a Russian bank account, where at least $2,000 monthly salary is deposited. Many fighters say bonuses were also given – and the longer they stay on the front lines, the more bonuses they receive. Some say they made up to $4,000 a month.

Several of the Nepalis who fought for Russia said they had received only brief training before being sent into combat.

Such a short training period before sending Nepali soldiers to fight “shows the desperation of the Russian government and their need for human resources on the frontline,” said Binoj Basnyat, a retired major general from the Nepali army, who now works as a strategic analyst.

CNN spoke with one Nepali man who recently left Russia after spending three months there. CNN is referring to him by the pseudonym Ram Sharma for his security.

Like many Nepalis who fled Russia without being discharged from their contracts, Sharma has no idea how to withdraw the money he still has in a Russian bank account.

“After I escaped from the military camp, it took me three days to get to Moscow. I was worried that by going to a bank to withdraw the money, I would risk getting caught,” he said. “I can access my bank account on my phone, but I don’t know if it’s possible to transfer that money overseas.”

Sharma, a retired Nepali police officer, was working as a security guard in a Dubai hotel when a Nepali agent in Kathmandu contacted him about the terms Russia was offering for foreigners to join its military. Sharma was making around $450 a month in Dubai and was immediately lured by the offer.

“After seeing gruesome images on the frontlines, seeing your friends die next to you, realizing chances of survival is very slim…. you then realize the money is not worth it. That’s why I escaped,” he said.

Agents in Nepal charge between $5,000 and $7,000 to arrange a tourist visa for an individual through a third country, according to the police.

The Nepali government has now banned its citizens from traveling to Russia for work and has implemented stricter requirements for people trying to go to countries such as the UAE on a visit visa.

Nepal’s foreign ministry in December urged Russia to stop recruiting Nepali citizens and send home the remains of those killed in the war.

“We are very much concerned that Russia has recruited our citizens and sent them to war zones in vulnerable situations,” Nepali Foreign Minister N. P. Saud told CNN in an interview in his office in Kathmandu.

The minister said that Russia’s deputy foreign minister had last month assured him that “they will sort it out” with regard to Nepal’s concerns but acknowledged that Moscow hasn’t taken any steps so far.

“We don’t have any information that Russia is doing anything,” he said, stressing that Moscow should “respect Nepal’s point of view.”

“We have a traditional treaty with a few countries for the recruitment of our citizens in the military of those countries,” he explained. “But we don’t have such treaty with Russia for such type of military or security recruitment.”

The minister said he had asked to travel to Moscow to discuss the issue but was waiting for an invitation from the Russian government.

Saud also said Nepal was talking to Ukrainian officials about releasing the four Nepali POWs taken by Ukraine from the front lines. He said Ukraine had some “reservations” and “legal questions” which the Nepali government was working to address.

It’s unclear if there will be any legal consequences against individuals who either defy the Nepali government’s ban to travel to Russia for work or who take part in combat operations against Ukraine.

Kathmandu police said they broke up a racket last month, leading to the arrest of 18 people allegedly involved in sending Nepali men to join the Russian army.

They raided several hotels where those arrested were staying and confiscated dozens of passports and several hundred thousand Nepali rupees, the police said.

But Nepalis haven’t stopped flying to Russia.

Sharma, the man who recently returned, said he had met a few Nepalis in Moscow who had just arrived and were looking to get into the army.

Kathmandu police chief Bhupendra Bahadur Khatri said the number of Nepalis going to a third country on a visit visa to eventually fly to Russia had slowed but hadn’t completely stopped.

“We are getting some intelligence that some of these agents are still active in recruiting Nepal men. We have gathered some undercurrent of their activities, and our investigation continues,” Khatri said.

Basnyat, the analyst, blames political instability and rising unemployment in Nepal as a major factor driving Nepalis to seek out dangerous employment in Russia.

More than 15 percent of its people live below the poverty line. The estimated unemployment rate in 2022 was 11.1 percent, according to the World Bank, compared with 10.6 percent in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic. Tens of thousands of Nepalis travel to Gulf countries for work every year, with international remittances amounting to nearly 23 percent of the country’s GDP. An overwhelming 70 percent of the country’s workforce is employed in the informal sector, exposing them to heightened job insecurity and limited protections.

Khadka is also planning to go to the Middle East as a migrant worker once he recovers from his conflict injuries.

“I want to do commercial farming in Nepal but it’s proving next to impossible for me to take a loan. I’m looking to go to one of the Gulf countries. I’m done with fighting wars,” he said.
