ChatGPT is one of the finest examples of artificial intelligence in action.

OpenAI released the bot on November 30, 2022, and within five days it had over a million users.

If Google is a search engine, ChatGPT is an answer engine that enables you to do human-like question-and-answer sessions with a bot.

So, what can ChatGPT do for you?

In this article, I will share some actionable tips for creating a variety of ChatGPT prompts that can help take your marketing efforts to the next level.

Let’s begin!

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that uses the GPT-3.5 language model (short for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3”) to generate human-like text.

The AI-powered bot uses natural language processing (NLP) to generate translations quickly and (mostly) accurately. It is an excellent tool for companies, marketers and copywriters that need to create large amounts of compelling and persuasive text-based content – such as articles, email campaigns, ad headlines, video scripts, product descriptions or other marketing copy – quickly.

For example, I asked ChatGPT to write a 200-word news story about the advantages of ChatGPT for business, and it generated the output within seconds:

And it’s not just for writing articles; ChatGPT can be used to perform a variety of tasks, from creating computer programs to writing stories.

You can ask ChatGPT to:

  • Generate human-like text, such as news articles
  • Answer questions on a wide range of topics, such as history, science and pop culture
  • Create a story, as it gives you suggestions for characters, plot and setting
  • Translate text from one language to another
  • Summarize long documents or articles
  • Distill entire blog posts into meta descriptions
  • Compose music, teleplays, fairy tales and student essays
  • Generate code for various programming languages
  • Provide help with research by finding relevant information and organizing it in a logical manner
  • Create reports or presentations with data visualization
  • Emulate a Linux system or simulate an entire chat room
  • Play games like tic-tac-toe and trivia

How Is ChatGPT Different from Jasper or other AI Writing Tools?

The most significant difference between ChatGPT and other AI writing tools like Jasper, Writesonic or Rytr is that:

  • ChatGPT is not just a tool for writing marketing copy or articles; it can do tons of other tasks, like writing programming code or even play games with you.
  • Other AI-writing tools are created solely to perfect your writing and to make it easier for you to create marketing content.

The other crucial difference between ChatGPT and other AI-writing software is that ChatGPT is currently (and for the foreseeable future) free to use, while AI-writing programs can cost anywhere between $25-$100 per month or more.

Moreover, Jasper (shown in the image below) and other AI writers offer templates to write content for different use cases, while ChatGPT does not offer such features.

Basically, ChatGPT is versatile and is created for everyone, while Jasper and other AI-writing assistants are created primarily for businesses, marketers, sales, and writing teams.

Why Is ChatGPT a Powerful Tool for Marketers?

ChatGPT is a powerful tool for marketers because it allows them to create high-quality, unique content quickly and efficiently. It can be used to generate personalized product recommendations, engage with potential customers and gather information, provide customer service, create content for marketing campaigns, and test different variations of prompts.

Additionally, ChatGPT is able to understand the context and nuances of certain situations, allowing it to provide personalized and relevant responses. With its ability to understand natural language and generate human-like text with grammatical accuracy, it can help to improve user engagement and provide a more natural user experience.

Marketers can use ChatGPT for a variety of marketing tasks, such as:

  • Creating detailed product descriptions
  • Preparing outlines for articles and stories
  • Creating video transcriptions for videos
  • Preparing persuasive ad copy for Google, Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms
  • Writing email campaigns and social media posts
  • Analyzing large amounts of data and providing insights to make better data-driven decisions
  • Rephrasing existing content pieces

What Is a ChatGPT Prompt?

A prompt is simply a phrase or individual keyword used as input to an AI tool like ChatGPT.

The chatbot then analyzes the input and automatically generates a response. So it’s essential to word your prompts in a way that the tool can understand.

For instance, when I enter the question ‘”What is the capital of Australia?”, the ChatGPT model uses the information provided in the prompt to generate the response: “The capital of Australia is Canberra.” It then also adds a few critical pieces of information about Canberra.

Here are some more examples of ChatGPT prompts:

  • “Please write an article about JavaScript”
  • “What are the causes and effects of climate change?”
  • “What comprises a healthy diet, and why are they important for our health?”
  • “What is the difference between capitalism and socialism?”

Tips to Write the Most Effective Prompts

ChatGPT is based on an artificial learning model. The more information you feed it, the better answers it will return.

Here are some tips for writing the most effective ChatGPT prompts to get the most accurate and complete answers:

1) Be Specific

The more detailed your prompt, the better the answer.

Giving ChatGPT background information or context can help it understand the intent behind your prompt and generate a more relevant response.

For example, I want to approach website owners for guest posting, and I need an email to send to them. I asked ChatGPT to prepare this email for me.

This is what I asked: “Prepare an email for requesting the webmaster to accept me as a contributor on their site.”

And ChatGPT returned this answer:

The email looks nice, but it’s too long. The output is much better when I change my question to something more specific.

So I rephrase the question to: “Prepare an email for requesting the webmaster to accept me as a contributor on their site in 2 short paragraphs.”

Now, the output returned is much shorter and to the point than the previous one:

Hence, the more you refine your questions, the better responses you receive.

2) Use Proper Grammar and Punctuation

ChatGPT is trained on text written in proper grammar and punctuation, so using proper grammar and punctuation in your prompt will help it understand your intent more clearly.

However, ChatGPT is powerful enough to make auto-corrections for spelling errors.

For instance, when I knowingly entered an incorrect spelling for “conversion rate optimization,” the chatbot auto-corrected the spelling and provided a correct answer:

Still, using correct English is recommended as it helps to ensure that the model will understand and respond to your input most effectively.

3) Use Specific Keywords

Incorporating specific keywords related to the topic of your prompt can help ChatGPT understand the intent of your question and generate a more accurate response.

For example, if you need to prepare a meta description for a page about weight loss, it is better to share the exact keyword with ChatGPT to help the software prepare a relevant response.

In this example, the output is relevant and accurate based on the input I provided to ChatGPT:

Also, please note that I also specified the character count for the description, or else the tool would have written a longer response.

4) Refine Your Requests

The extremely convenient feature about ChatGPT that Google doesn’t have is the ability to continually refine your question until you get the answer you want.

For example, I started by asking this AI tool to create a budget for one month with a monthly income of $5,000. Here is what it gave me:

ChatGPT budget

I decided the rent was too low. So I said “Change the rent/mortgage to $1,800 but keep everything else the same.” And it did it. It also gave me a bit of advice about my rent-to-savings ratio:

ChatGPT budget 2

This was great, but I wanted to see it more clearly, so I said “Put the budget into a table format.” Voila!

Limitations of ChatGPT

ChatGPT can be a powerful tool for generating unique and high-quality content, but it does have limitations.

For instance, the AI model is only as good as the data it was trained on, so it may not always produce accurate or appropriate content. As mentioned earlier, ChatGPT can only answer based on the information that it has been trained on.

Additionally, ChatGPT is not able to fully understand the context or nuances of certain situations, and therefore may produce unrealistic or irrelevant content.

Let’s take a closer look at the top limitations of ChatGPT:

1) Built-in Biases

ChatGPT is trained on a dataset from the world wide web, which can include biases. These biases can be reflected in the responses generated by the model.

Steven T. Piantadosi of the University of California, Berkeley’s Computation and Language Lab published a series of tweets that pointed out the built-in biases by ChatGPT.

Here are some examples:

Another type of bias may be more harmless than the above examples, but it’s still a skewed point of view. This is from Search Engine Journal:

Here’s an example of how the bias changes the output.

I asked ChatGPT to write a story in the style of Raymond Carver and another one in the style of mystery writer Raymond Chandler.

Both stories had upbeat endings that were uncharacteristic of both writers.

In order to get an output that matched my expectations I had to guide ChatGPT with detailed directions to avoid upbeat endings and for the Carver-style ending to avoid a resolution to the story  because that is how Raymond Carver’s stories often played out.

Additionally, there are several studies that say that ChatGPT has left-wing bias:

Graphy of ChatGPT political compass test results -- left-wing leaning

And it is not politically neutral.

2) Limited Knowledge Base

ChatGPT’s knowledge base only goes up until 2021. This means that it is not capable of learning new information, so it can only generate responses based on the data it was trained on. It doesn’t have the ability to learn or adapt to new information.

Moreover, it can’t crawl the web, so you can’t simply ask ChatGPT to share 2023 stats on SEO. Since it can’t browse the internet, it can’t perform things that Google can do.

When I asked ChatGPT to share a list of 2023 marketing stats, it returned a list of old stats and clearly said “I’m sorry, as my knowledge cutoff is 2021, I do not have information about marketing stats for 2023.”:

Hence, you should not use ChatGPT if your work requires the latest research, since the information it returns will be outdated (if you consider 2021 outdated).

3) Lack of Originality

ChatGPT is a language model and its responses are based on patterns in the training data that it was exposed to. It can provide answers that are repetitive or lack full originality.

Therefore, you need to be cautious about using the output it generates and avoid publishing the content directly on your website or in your blog post without first verifying it.

Remember, Google technically penalizes AI-written content, although they admit that they can’t possibly identify all AI content.

When Aaron Leong set out to use leading duplicate content detectors to see if ChatGPT’s content could be flagged as plagiarism, most were unable to detect plagiarism in the content.

Some reports show that ChatGPT-derived text can score as low as 5% for plagiarism when tested. But with some tools, under 20% is considered acceptable. Keep in mind that what is acceptable depends on the specific tool used and the type of copy being tested.

To put this to the test, I asked ChatGPT to prepare an article of around 500 words on the topic “what is cybersecurity?”

The output was excellent in terms of grammar and the concept explained.

However, when I checked the content for plagiarism on Grammarly, it shows 11% plagiarism:

I tried different prompts and most of the time, the plagiarism was between 5-15%. In one instance, it was around 28%.

Therefore, you should make absolute certain that you check the output for plagiarism since Google and other search engines penalize sites that publish AI and/or duplicate content with the intent to manipulate search engine results.

A few plagiarism/duplicate content tools are:

4) Limited Scope of Human Questions

Humans generally don’t ask very good questions and thus the answers from AI are limited.

When writing questions for ChatGPT, it’s necessary to be clear and specific. Use keywords and phrases to help the model understand the context and content of your question. Avoid using overly complex or technical language and try to post a question in a single sentence or short phrase.

Additionally, it’s helpful to provide background information or context if necessary to help the model understand the question better.

For example, when I asked “How can I care for my dog?”, the answer returned was a collection of general tips on dog grooming:

When I provided more context to my question and asked “How can I care for my 6 month old cocker spaniel?”, the answer was specific to the Cocker Spaniel dog breed:

Now let’s suppose you want to find some facts about the crane machine and ask ChatGPT to find this info for you. It will return facts about the crane bird and not the crane machine:

If there’s any ambiguity about the topic, you need to explicitly tell the chatbot to share facts about, in this case, the crane machine:

The more context you provide, the more accurate answers you will get.

5) Wrong Answers

The average rate of obtaining correct answers from ChatGPT is low.

The programming Q&A site Stack Overflow has temporarily banned the use of ChatGPT because the answers provided by the tool are harmful to users who are asking on the site and looking for correct answers.

When I asked ChatGPT a logical question about guessing which word in a list does not belong, the answer returned was incorrect. ChatGPT says “Yard does not belong to the others as it is a unit of length measurement while the others are units of weight measurement.”

The correct answer is kilogram, as it is a unit of weight measurement, while the others are units of length measurement.

When I asked a general knowledge question on the cricket world cup, it again returned an incorrect answer. I asked, “How many times has India won the cricket world cup?” and the answer returned was “Once.”:

The correct answer is two times. India won the cricket world cup twice, first in 1983, and then in 2011.

And, finally, here are some of the noted limitations directly from OpenAI:

  • ChatGPT sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers. Fixing this issue is challenging, as: (1) during RL training, there’s currently no source of truth; (2) training the model to be more cautious causes it to decline questions that it can answer correctly; and (3) supervised training misleads the model because the ideal answer depends on what the model knows, rather than what the human demonstrator knows.
    • For instance, it will confidently state clearly wrong responses, like “it takes 9 women 1 month to make a baby.”
  • ChatGPT is sensitive to tweaks to the input phrasing or attempting the same prompt multiple times. Given one phrasing of a question, the model can claim to not know the answer, but given a slight rephrase, can answer correctly.
  • The model is often excessively verbose and overuses certain phrases, such as restating that it’s a language model trained by OpenAI. These issues arise from biases in the training data (trainers prefer longer answers that look more comprehensive) and well-known over-optimization issues.
  • Ideally, the model would ask clarifying questions when the user provided an ambiguous query. Instead, our current models usually guess what the user intended.
  • While we’ve made efforts to make the model refuse inappropriate requests, it will sometimes respond to harmful instructions or exhibit biased behavior. We’re using the Moderation API to warn or block certain types of unsafe content, but we expect it to have some false negatives and positives for now. We’re eager to collect user feedback to aid our ongoing work to improve this system.

Therefore, you should always be careful before using ChatGPT’s text or codes in your work.
